BARE BRAVERY

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Payne

WHS ALUM COMPLETES 21 DAYS IN THE AMAZON ON DISCOVERY CHANNEL’S “NAKED & AFRAID” From the time she was a little girl, Whitney Hamblin has always spent her every waking moment barefoot and communing with nature. “My parents used to have to drag me inside,” recalls Hamblin, a Westfield High School graduate. It should come as no surprise, then, that during college when a coworker told her that she had hiked the 2,200mile Appalachian Trail, Hamblin was

mesmerized. Soon thereafter, she talked her best friend into hiking the Appalachian Trail with her. On March 16, 2016, the two set out on their adventure, logging 15-20 miles a day for six months. “It was no romantic stroll through the woods,” Hamblin says. It was, however, prime training ground for what came next. In September 2017, Hamblin was contacted by producers of The Discovery Channel, who had found WestfieldMag.com / JUNE 2019 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 5

her through her Appalachian Trail blog and wanted to know if she’d consider applying to become a contestant on their show “Naked & Afraid.” After talking it over with her mom, Alma, she decided to go for it. To prepare herself to survive the experience, she stopped drinking alcohol three months prior to the show and cut out caffeine six weeks before. She also started walking barefoot everywhere and practiced setting fires in all kinds of weather.

In May 2018, Hamblin, 28 at the time, and her partner for the show Nathan Martinez, were dropped on a tiny island in Brazil, stripped of clothing and footwear and armed with just a small satchel packed with a few essential tools for survival. With every step came the possibility of an injury (Hamblin says she was digging thorns out of her feet for three weeks after coming home). Then there were the relentless bugs, which included fire ants, hungry mosquitoes, pesky gnats, and black biting flies. Hamblin was bitten so frequently, she still bears the battle scars. “My butt looks like a dartboard that’s been in a dive bar for 30 years,” jokes Hamblin, who can laugh about it now.

“I DID SOME OF THE BEST THINKING OF MY LIFE ON THAT ISLAND BECAUSE THERE WERE ZERO DISTRACTIONS.” In fact, she’s proud of her scars as they represent her tenacious attitude. And that’s what it took to survive 21 days in the jungle. She battled nausea and dizziness due to dehydration, malnutrition and heat exhaustion. She also struggled to sleep, especially the first week as she laid awake swatting away scores of mosquitoes. By night seven, however, her body shut down and she finally caught some shut-eye, though never more than three hours since she had to tend to the fire. Though the experience was grueling, the pair prevailed, working together to score five major protein kills (one armadillo and four stingrays), setting a show record. Hamblin even got creative with their resources by melting the fat off of a stingray, letting it cool, then rubbing the substance over her sunburned lips and chest.

WHS Alum Whitney Hamblin

6 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / JUNE 2019 / WestfieldMag.com

Though Hamblin admits that she and her partner got crankier as the days passed, they made a pact on night one not to expend their energy on bickering. They always communicated in a respectful manner, which irked the producers, who love drama for ratings purposes. But the duo knew that on the island, as in life, it’s better to build each other up than tear each other down. Not only did Hamblin leave the experience with big-time bragging rights, but she also walked away with a crystalclear perspective on life’s priorities. “I did some of the best thinking of my life on that island because there were zero distractions,” Hamblin says. She reflected on her relationships, contemplating which ones positively served her and which didn’t. She had a revelation.

Compassionate ER care when you need us most

“It’s not about where you are in life but who you’re with,” says Hamblin, who wasn’t the only one soul-searching during her time away. While she was gone, her mother sent her daily messages via Facebook, knowing that if the messages went unanswered, that meant her daughter was still kicking butt on the show. “I had 21 incredible messages waiting for me when I got back to the hostel,” Hamblin says. She read them while munching on potato chips that tasted like a million dollars. When she finally returned home a few days later, she collapsed onto her bed at 7 p.m. and slept until 2:30 p.m. the following day. Future bucket-list items for Hamblin include hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from the Mexican border all the way to Canada and hiking every trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

KEEP MOVING THIS SUMMER

Whether you are doing laps in the pool, mowing the lawn or going for a bike ride this summer, make sure you are making the most out of the season in the healthiest way. “It is important to stay active, and often easier to stay active during the summertime,” Dr. Kris Homb says, nonsurgical spine and sports specialist at IU Health North Hospital. “If you know you are prone to joint pain during or after exercise, avoid high-impact activities like jumping and running. Instead, try finding a low-impact alternative.” Dr. Homb suggests trying cycling, swimming, canoeing or kayaking. “Cycling can be a great source of exercise if you are experiencing knee pain,” Dr. Homb says. “Although it is a repetitive movement, cycling works the quadriceps and hamstrings without putting direct strain on the knee joints. Swimming is also an excellent activity for those who suffer from joint pain or arthritis. Not only does it work all of the body’s muscle groups, it also helps

keep your heart healthy. If you're not the best swimmer, you can get a good workout by walking across the pool forwards, backwards and sideways. Canoeing and kayaking can also be beneficial to someone that suffers from hip pain. This can take pressure off of your hips while still providing a workout for the upper body.” Yard work is an unavoidable task and can often be painful if done the wrong way. When tackling yard work, Dr. Homb suggests taking breaks frequently, staying well-hydrated and applying sunscreen.

Don’t let pain hold you back from doing your favorite summer activities. Next time you are heading out for time in the sun, remember to choose a low-impact activity if needed, use correct posture, take breaks, stay hydrated and apply plenty of sunscreen. Talk with your doctor if you have consistent joint pain or feel pain completing your normal activities or hobbies.

“Gardening, if done correctly and with the right tools, can be beneficial to your body and mind,” he says. “When doing yard work or gardening, don’t over-strain your joints. Limit movements like excessive reaching, bending and kneeling to reduce the strain on your body. When mowing the yard with a push mower, use good posture, keeping your back and wrists straight and pushing with your legs and arms. Mow the lawn at dusk or dawn to avoid the risk of overexposure to the heat.”

“IT IS IMPORTANT TO STAY ACTIVE, AND OFTEN EASIER TO STAY ACTIVE DURING THE SUMMERTIME.” - DR. KRIS HOMB -

ASPEN OUTDOOR DESIGNS

Bring the inside out! A growing trend is bringing your houseplants outdoors to your patio in combination with your annuals. We are seeing lots of green plants such as bird of paradise, palms, monstera, etc. play off the boho trend in wicker pots, terracotta and ceramic. Be sure to acclimate your houseplants to the outdoors and be mindful about your shade or sun requirements. Also, be prepared for them to thrive in the humid months outdoors! Dual-purpose pots! Use your patio pot to kill two mosquitoes (and hopefully more!). Carnivorous plants, mosquito repelling plants and beneficial herbs not only look great, but also putting in extra work so you can relax without swatting at bugs. Try planting marigolds with a citrosa (the leaves smell just like citronella) and pop in a scented geranium all great for repelling unwanted insects. Basil, rosemary, and lavender are all useful herbs that keep flies and mosquitoes at bay and an added bonus to whatever you have on the grill that evening.

“Outdoor Living” is the current buzzword in the Landscape Design/Build Industry. Over the past decade, the need for more elaborate outdoor living spaces has drastically increased. There are several elements which can be used to create your perfect outdoor room. From bistro lights strung over the patio to the ever-popular fire feature, the sky is the limit… unless you are enticed by a roofed structure. Recent trends have also shown the desire for larger pavers used in patios. The days of 6”x8” tumbled pavers or poured concrete has been replaced by slab pavers as large as 24”x36” and manufactured to last 30+ years with minimal maintenance. Outdoor cooking and dining have always been popular but recent improvements in mosquito control have made those bug-infested evenings enjoyable. Whether you are enjoying your time on a patio or composite deck, no space is complete without interesting plantings. Every year, new plant introductions bring better disease resistance, increased bloom periods and repeat blooming to the designer’s pallet.

Go monochromatic! We are seeing a growing trend of various shades and textures of the same color all in one window box or patio pots. The result is striking! Favorites include yellows, purples and pinks. I personally went with yellows for my back deck choosing bidens, strawflower, calibrachoa, coleus and a kiwi dracaena spike. We tucked in some Lysimachia for a chartreuse pop! Ultimately, have fun with all the possibilities and enjoy your outdoor space!

Whether you are in need of a new outdoor living space or just want to spruce up an existing space, contact a professional for assistance. A good landscape designer will listen to your initial ideas, ask a lot of questions, and offer ideas of their own. However, be prepared to pay a fee for a professional design and be sure to plan your project months before your desired completion date. Happy Outdoor Living!

When mulching around trees, especially young trees, leave the root flare of the tree free of mulch. Never pile mulch up around the trunk of the tree. This can cause multiple issues including excess moisture on the tree trunk, inviting disease and insects. It can also cause feeder roots to circle upwards and eventually girdle the tree. For proper mulching, find the root flare of the tree & spread mulch outward from the root flare to the drip line. 2 to 3 inches of mulch is plenty, and doesn’t have to be re-applied every year. To spruce it up the following year, just pull out any weeds and scratch at the mulch that is there to fluff it up. Proper mulching can protect tree roots from heat and moisture-loss, as well as provide a barrier around the tree to keep mowers & weed trimmers away. Remember, no mulch volcanoes!

“I feel extremely humbled and honored to win,” Eggleston says. “My high school journey has been far from easy. During Student Impact, 536 North Union Street, my freshman year, I was diagnosed with Zionsville, is a safe place where students Crohn’s Disease, and missed a lot of school from grades 5-12 can build relationships because of it. Bridget Arnold, a Senior at Westfield High School, is aware of the irony of her current situation. A lifelong resident of Westfield, she describes herself as an introvert by nature and someone who does not seek out attention. Winning the Indiana High School Forensic Association (IHSFA) state championship in Informative Speaking plus qualifying for the National Competition this June in Dallas through the National Speech and Debate Association has thrust her into the limelight and made her a spokesperson for the Speech and Debate Team.

Eggleston plans to study zoology in college. “Ever since I can remember, my favorite thing has always been animals, particularly of the mammal species, but still animals in general,” Eggleston says. “My dream job has always been something to do with animals, whether that was a veterinarian or a zoo keeper, I did not really know, but I knew it had to be with animals.

“Mrs. McKinney has helped me through some of the hardest times in my life,” she adds. “To this day, I try and see her at least once a week just to say hello or have a conversation. It is not only Mrs. McKinney at Westfield, but there are so many teachers like her. I know so many students that have a relationship similar to mine with a teacher and those relationships will stick with the students for the rest of their lives.” Eggleston says Student Impact of Westfield has also helped her tremendously. “I attend Student Impact every Monday and Friday and volunteer as an intern/ student leader every Tuesday and Thursday,” Eggleston says. “I love everything about this organization. I love the people who run it and attend it, what they stand for, what they do for Westfield, and everything in between. Eggleston is proud to say she have been a

“Once I started trying to narrow down my dream job, I knew I did not want to be a veterinarian, but that is about all I could figure out. I hope one day I can figure out what career I want, but for now, I know it must be working with animals.” Eggleston noted that Westfield has some of the best teachers. “Almost every single teacher I have had since first grade I have really liked. With Westfield teachers you can tell they want every single one of their students to succeed, and they try to make that happen. I have had so many teachers inspire me, and make me want to be a better person and student.” Eggleston has a favorite teacher.

“I was in fifth grade when I joined 4-H,” Arnold says. “One of the projects offered was Public Speaking. My mom urged me to do it, saying it was a good life skill to have. I agreed to it once I realized that I had complete control over the situation. I could pick the topic, do the research and have a script to convey my ideas.”

“One teacher that will forever have a place in my heart and will forever be my absolute

Besides participating on the Speech and Debate Team, Arnold has contributed to Westfield High School is several other ways. She is a member of the Tennis and Soccer Teams as well as partaking in club soccer. This past February, she was a co-director of Girls Rock STEAM, an event to introduce intermediate school girls to possible careers in science, technology, engineering, arts and WestfieldMag.com / JUNE 2019 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 17

part of Student Impact since the fifth grade and will be a member until the moment she graduates high school. “I started volunteering at student impact my sophomore year, but it wasn’t until my junior year that I was volunteering on a constant basis. As of right now, I volunteer nine or more hours a week, and love every minute.” Eggleston also says she loves living in Westfield. “I have always felt safe and secure while being in Westfield,” she says. “I love the amenities and opportunities available. I love that Westfield has fun things to do with friends, and also fun things to do with family.” She believes Student Impact is a big part of that. Danyele Easterhaus, executive director of Student Impact of Westfield, says says she is thrilled Eggleston has been recognized. “Shea is just an amazing young woman,” Easterhaus says. “She leads with a quiet, yet strong sense about her, despite all the issues she faces each and every day. She puts others first and displays leadership not in

math. Arnold helped facilitate the organization and management of the interactive activities the day offered. However, competing on the Speech and Debate Team has been a constant throughout her high school years. “I joined Speech and Debate my freshman year on a whim,” she says. “Since I had some experience through 4-H, I thought it might be a cool way to get involved. I had absolutely no success that entire year until Sectionals when out of the blue I qualified for State in Poetic Interpretation.” After her initial achievement as a freshman, Arnold continued to receive recognition. At Sectionals her sophomore year, she qualified for State and was a quarter-finalist in Poetic Interpretation. She switched to Original Oratory her junior year and again qualified for State at Sectionals. In 2017, she won the Indiana State Fair 4-H competition in speech. As a result, she earned the Achievement Trip, an all-expense paid weekend in Chicago sponsored by the Indiana State Fair Board of Directors. Arnold’s plans for the future include completing her 10th year with 4-H this summer and attending Purdue University in West Lafayette in the fall. She’s planning on studying organizational leadership and anthropology with a minor in Spanish. She also plans to investigate joining the Purdue Speech and Debate Team.

“Knowing how to speak in public is something that will be utilized in any job anyone ever has,” Arnold says. “It really changed my life. Our school Speech and Debate team is such a supportive and diverse group. I found that, during competitions, other teams were just as welcoming. Everyone wants each other to do well and we always have a lot of fun. I want other people to know the beauty that is public speaking.”
