LETTER FROM THE MAYOR Hello and Welcome to Westfield, On behalf of the City of Westfield, thank you for choosing this great community as your new home. We are honored every time we get to roll out our “welcome mat” to new residents and visitors. In Westfield, we don’t just dream, we do! We have grown from a small farming community to an exciting city that welcomes millions of people each year. Our population now sits at almost 40,000 people, and we have been recognized as the “Best Small City in America.” What makes us worthy of this recognition? A few highlights…

These highlights are only part of what makes this community great. Ask any number of our residents why they choose to live here and many say, “It just feels right.” There is a sense of care in our community that sets us apart. This care can be seen in our community-wide initiative to improve the wellbeing of our citizens across the spectrum of health — mental, physical, social, emotional and spiritual. This initiative will focus on improving processes, resources and training opportunities to better support our residents. The action plan will be released in May, I am excited that you will be a part of this journey. Similar to this Directory & Relocation Guide, our Westfield Welcome team offers a New Resident Packet that features beneficial information about services and programs to make your transition easier. The packet includes important information about utilities, trash/ stormwater bills, snow removal and will answer a lot of other questions you might have. You can find the packet at westfieldwelcome.com/ new-residents. If you have questions beyond what is covered, please call us at 317-804-3150. Again, welcome and I hope to meet you soon! Best, Andrew Cook, Mayor of Westfield

part of Student Impact since the fifth grade and will be a member until the moment she graduates high school. “I started volunteering at student impact my sophomore year, but it wasn’t until my junior year that I was volunteering on a constant basis. As of right now, I volunteer nine or more hours a week, and love every minute.” Eggleston also says she loves living in Westfield. “I have always felt safe and secure while being in Westfield,” she says. “I love the amenities and opportunities available. I love that Westfield has fun things to do with friends, and also fun things to do with family.” She believes Student Impact is a big part of that. Danyele Easterhaus, executive director of Student Impact of Westfield, says says she is thrilled Eggleston has been recognized. “Shea is just an amazing young woman,” Easterhaus says. “She leads with a quiet, yet strong sense about her, despite all the issues she faces each and every day. Kathryn Mick, a senior at Westfield High School, has some gentle advice to anyone seeking to ease global problems and conflicts. She believes that learning the languages of other countries will help bridge the gap between peoples. Plus, she wholeheartedly advocates promoting a culture of teamwork — something she has observed first-hand.

Mick, who has attended Westfield Washington Schools since kindergarten, became involved with student government during her ninth-grade year. As a sophomore and a junior, she served on the Student Government Executive Committee. She ran for and was elected 2018-19 Student Body President, a position that can only be held by a senior. “Being Student Body President has made my senior year transformative,” she says. “I got to witness the power of teamwork and how all the activities work together. My hope is that all the different programs will continue to support each other in years to come. A good example was Winter Homecoming. Many different groups worked together to make the class stairwell decorating competition a success.” French Club is a well-attended activity at

the high school, and Mick has served as the president for the past three years. The club isn’t just for students taking French class but is open to any student who has an interest in French culture. Movies are watched, authentic French cuisine is sampled and every November for French Education Week they participate in a cooking demonstration. This year the group made crepes at a local Westfield restaurant, The Rail. This past summer, between her junior and senior year, Mick participated in a study abroad in St. Brieuc, located in the Brittany region in northwest France. Sponsored by the Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Languages, students must have a high level of proficiency to be accepted into the program. For six weeks, Mick lived with a host family and attended total immersion classes. “All the students involved pledged to uphold the Honor Code and only spoke French

to each other — even outside of class,” Mick says. “Besides being in the classroom, we had other opportunities such as watching the World Cup, going to the beaches of Normandy and a field trip to Paris. I grew a lot in understanding the culture and language but also in understanding myself. I became close to my host family, especially my host sister and we text often. My parents and I are going to visit them this summer.” The love of different languages is not confined to only French for Mick. She started studying Spanish her junior year as well. Additionally, she hopes to master Arabic when she attends Indiana University in Bloomington this coming year. “I want to study French, Spanish and Arabic with an emphasis in linguistics, but I’d also like to work towards being admitted

into Indiana University’s Arabic Flagship Program,” she says. “I would take a class in Arabic every semester and have a capstone year in Morocco.” When asked how she finds time to study and fulfill all her leadership duties, Mick says, “I’m not doing anything extraordinary, I’m just trying to put my best foot forward.”

Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Amy Payne

For seven years Rick Fallis has been helping individuals, families and small businesses throughout the Hoosier state navigate the often confusing and complicated world of health insurance coverage and find the right plan, as a representative of HealthMarkets Insurance Agency.

After working in education for 11 years, Fallis made the switch to the insurance industry in 2012 and has found the field rewarding in multiple ways.

when I was looking to switch careers, and HealthMarkets allows me to work hard for my customers and have that flexibility at the same time.”

“Helping clients with their insurance questions and issues and doing the homework to find them an effective plan is really rewarding,” Fallis says. “I also wanted a bit more flexibility in my schedule

Fallis and his fellow HealthMarkets agents work to find coverage that suits each client’s particular circumstances, including health, life, critical illness, disability and long-term care insurance. As an independent broker,

Fallis serves Central Indiana as far south as Greenwood, with clients as far north as Lafayette, Kokomo and Fort Wayne, and he offers free consultation services to assess a potential client’s protection needs. “Due to the availability of numerous companies, I’ll usually piece together plans from two, three or four different companies for people,” Fallis says. “This allows them alternatives for their health care, and I can get them the best deal, the best premiums and the best coverage.”

“Three out of four people who file medical bankruptcies have the insurance,” Fallis says. “But it’s other things that make the difference that we’re able to offer, like an illness benefit, a hospital stay benefit or a cancer policy — things beyond the major medical coverage. And it’s not just the fact that we can customize. We have many different companies we work with to give you the right options.”

After the enrollment process, Fallis makes sure clients have his personal phone number for calls or texts with any questions, comments or concerns. He sends out monthly emails informing clients of any updates or shifts in the industry and undertakes annual policy reviews to re-evaluate coverage prior to renewal.

“During open enrollment I’ll add 70 to 80 new clients,” he says. “I know some people will do more, but I try to keep that number down so I can keep customer service strong and get back to people promptly if needed. I like keeping it personal, knowing all of my clients’ names and checking in on people.”

HealthMarkets offers plans from more than 200 companies across the U.S., and Fallis stresses the importance of exploring all available avenues to find the most appropriate coverage. “If people don’t get subsidies to help them pay for coverage from some of the major companies then those premiums can really put people out of budget,” he says. “That’s why I enjoy offering other alternatives and finding what works for them.”

We have been in the lead of using more biology and less chemistry. One of our founders is an Agronomist from Purdue, a soil scientist. He works with the team at TLC and with various manufacturers, distributors and developers of lawn products to find the right products and combinations to build the soil. We are utilizing biology to replace some of the chemistry as we build the soil. Many of the newer lawns have poor soil, a clay-pea gravel mix that leaves a lot to be desired. These soils have low nutrient value as well as they bind up the nutrients that tend to be there. Just using organic fertilizers doesn’t help reduce the amount of nitrogen being put on the lawns, it’s just another form of it. With the use of only organic fertilizers, we still have that whole nitrogen cycle which ends up with ammonification and nitrates into the water system. By using biosolids and a variety of things like kelp, humic and fulvic acids, amino acids, mychorrhizea, micro nutrients and other ingredients we are increasing the microbial activity in the rhizosphere. When we increase the microbial activity we are getting nutrients released from the soil which are then more readily available to the turf plant through its root system. The soil and the root system both have a negative charge, and when we can break off these nutrients with a positive charge from the soil they can then be taken up by the root system. By adding carbon into the soil we increase the surface area where these nutrients can also be stored and not just passed through the soil. Some of these products also cause small microfractures of the soil particles leading to more surface area to hold onto these nutrients as well. We practice IPM, Integrated Pest Management, and with our low pressure, low volume applications we can reduce our pesticides as well. We have a great team. Many of our team members have been with us for more than five years, up to 25. We have seven guys with more than 25 years of experience in the field.
