Moving to a new town means getting the lowdown on where to eat, where to shop and where to take the kids on a free day. It can be overwhelming for the many Westfield “transplants” to search on social media, until they discover the one page that covers it all.

That’s why Michelle Baxter started “Wandering Westfield” on Facebook in the first place—to enlighten citizens of Westfield of fun places to go that are new and even old ones that tend to be forgotten.

“I didn’t start out to be an influencer,” says the mother of two. “I started Wandering Westfield when the pandemic hit in 2020 because I wanted to share what we were doing.

Everyone was pretty much stuck at home and a lot of things were closed, so I wanted to share what was open.”

Baxter’s mission was to encourage fans of her page to shop and support local when it came to restaurants, boutiques and activities. Each post highlights something special about that location and shares what Baxter and her family enjoyed about the visit.

“I always want to be positive about anything I share there, so I’m never going to bash a business,” she says.

One such way was sharing how she signed up to be a substitute teacher in the Westfield Washington Schools district. “I haven’t spent a lot of time doing it, but I will substitute here and there when the school needs

Visitors can still see where the mess hall was located. “After I posted about visiting Acorn Farm, a fan commented that she has lived here in Westfield for 24 years and always wondered what the place was all about,” says Baxter.

Baxter loves experiencing Westfield and surrounding communities with her husband, Ben, and her children, 9 year old Kendall and 15 year old Braden. While she was born on the Southeast side of Indianapolis, her husband was born and raised here.

“I love Westfield because I love the community,” says Baxter. “It’s not too big, but it’s not too small, either. It’s growing, but I think that’s a good thing. And I love sharing it with others.”

Oh So Sweet CRUMBL COOKIES OPENS IN COOL CREEK COMMONS

The team at Crumbl Cookies is on a mission.

Their goal is to bring friends and family together over a box of the best cookies in the world. The Carmel store is part of a nationwide chain started in Utah by two cousins, Jason McGowan and Sawyer Hemsley. After a period of trial and error, they hit upon the recipe for what some say is the best chocolate cookie found anywhere.

From there, other varieties were developed.

Customers are never bored with innovative flavor profiles that change weekly.

“It was important to our founders that customers see their cookies being made in real time - the flour being sifted, the eggs being cracked and the dough being balled,” says Kadee Jones, internal communications manager. “We also use the highest-quality ingredients when making our cookies.

Additionally, our niche, weekly-rotating menu is a huge differentiator for the company. Each week we offer new and exciting flavors and this is something that our customers are always excited about.

Each week the store offers four flavors different than the week before, but two cookies are always on the menu and available for purchase. One is the thick and soft Milk Chocolate Chip cookie that started it all, and it’s served warm. The second is the chilled Vanilla Sugar cookie topped with a scoop of buttercream frosting.

The rotating collection of cookies is now

up to 200 varieties. The flavors range from Raspberry Lemonade to Biscoff Lava, and many are stuffed with fillings. During a recent week the store offered Buckeye Brownie with a layer of peanut butter, topped with melted semisweet chocolate, and Cake Batter Blondie, a cookie rolled in festive sprinkles. Also included was S’mores, complete with marshmallow cream along with mild chocolate chips, and Hazelnut Churro, a cinnamon cookie stuffed with hazelnut spread.

What goes great with cookies? Milk and ice cream, of course. Crumbl Cookies sell both.

Ice cream flavors include Cookie Dough Crunch, Raspberry Cheesecake, Brownie Fudge, Snickerdoodle, Peanut Butter Brittle and Vanilla Bean. Also sold is a cookie cutter to divide the made-to-share cookies into four perfect portions.

There are several ways the large, indulgent cookies and ice cream can be purchased.

The store is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Delivery is available within a 10-mile radius.

Customers can use the Crumbl app on smartphones for curbside pickup.

The unique pink boxes to transport cookie purchases come in three sizes. Patrons have a choice of a four-pack box for $12.63, sixpack box for $18.76, or party box filled with 12 cookies for $32.87. The boxes make the perfect gift, and the store offers shipping as well as catering.

“We are proud of the fact that our cookies are served during some of life’s most celebratory moments - weddings,

graduations or even just during family dinners,” Jones says. “We can’t wait to become a part of the community, and even more, we look forward to being part of those special moments and bringing people together with our cookies.”

DIANA COYLE TAKES THE REINS OF THE HAMILTON COUNTY LEADERSHIP ACADEMY Writer / Megan Arszman Photography Provided

With a passion for continuing education and crafting professional relationships, New Jersey native Diana Coyle was recently announced as the new executive director of the Hamilton County Leadership Academy (HCLA).

“I discovered that I really enjoyed the work I was doing at my previous position, which was cultivating a relationship and building professional pathways for others - which is why when I saw the position for the HCLA open, I knew it was the right place for me,” she says. “I knew that as the executive director I’d be able to do so much of what I’ve been building throughout my professional career, while giving back to the community.”

Community is very important to Coyle, as is Hamilton County’s growth in focusing on community. She’s currently looking for a new home somewhere within the county, but is taking her time to choose the right space.

“I’ve been living in Indianapolis for four years now, and I’m still enjoying learning more about the culture and life of the place I call home,” she says.

Established in 1991, the HCLA is available for professionals and community members in Hamilton County, and accepted applicants learn in an immersive environment once per month. The program focuses on different elements of the professional community of the county, including nonprofits, government agencies, civic groups and other resources. For example, the January curriculum focused on arts, culture and recreation, and the lesson included a tour of Westfield’s new playhouse.

“It’s an educational mix of hearing and experiencing in Hamilton County,” Coyle says.

After the 10-month process, each graduate has the opportunity to stay connected as an alumnus of the program, whether by serving as a board member, sitting on a committee or just using new knowledge to give back to the county and community.

The program leaders are looking forward to a fresh outlook with Coyle, and she is looking forward to expanding the program.

“I’m excited to see what my first year holds as we continue to fine tune and really think, strategically, of what our next steps will be to give back to Hamilton County,” she says.

One of the ways Coyle started to immerse herself in the county was

by setting a goal of spending every Wednesday of 2022 finding a new place to explore in the county, whether that includes visiting a new park, shopping at a local boutique or noshing on a meal that’s locally sourced.

“I’m a relationship and community person,” she says. “I want to make sure I’m building relationships in the place I look to call home and the place where I work.”

Coyle’s family resides in North Carolina, and she looks forward to sharing her community treasures with them.

“I love taking my nephews to Conner Prairie and sharing my favorite wine spots with my parents,” she says.

Coyle’s beloved dachshund mix, Coal, escorts her on her adventures. Coyle grew up as an active member of 4-H. She showed dogs in 4-H and was a junior handler in the American Kennel Club.

“Dogs are an important part of my life and an aspect of family that is always a necessity,” she says.

Matt Gritten, co-owner of GT Carts in Cicero, says the employees at the highquality golf cart business go out of their way to make sure customers like their carts.

“There are many factors that we feel set us apart from our competitors,” says Gritten, who co-owns GT Carts with his brother Ben. “The main thing is customer care. Our business philosophy is very simple. Take care of people and they will take care of you. We feel that if we do the right thing and tell the truth to our customers, the rest will take care of itself.”

GT Carts, which also has a location in Monticello, has earned a solid reputation for selling top-notch custom and recreational golf carts.

“Another advantage we have is selection,” Gritten says. “No one wants to wait to get what they want if they don’t have to.

Our selection of in-stock carts, parts and accessories sets us apart from nearly all of our competitors in the Midwest. To keep build times to a minimum and provide the widest selection possible, we stock hundreds of new and used carts, and a huge inventory of parts and accessories.

This is especially important in this time of production constraints and extended wait times on nearly everything.”

Gritten adds that GT Carts has an excellent staff of mechanics, painters, assemblers and attendants.

GT Carts also uses quality parts, mostly from the original equipment manufacturer.

“We are as proud as we can be of the people who make up GT Carts,” he says. “Aside from being good at what they do for us, they are good people. We are very fortunate to have people who are extremely hard working, dedicated, and who have proven themselves loyal to our company and to our customers. In a time when businesses everywhere are screaming for help, we have retained our people and even added a few more good ones. That says a lot about our employees. Hopefully it says a little bit about our company too.”

“We have access directly to E-Z-GO’s internal mechanical technicians, and years of diagnostic experience,” Gritten says. “We take a lot of pride in our work and helping customers with all their needs, big or small.”

The company’s carts are built for many purposes.

“We build carts for several uses and applications - leisure, police, utility, property management, hunting, beverage and food, campgrounds, and themed carts, to name a few,” Gritten says. “Most carts we build are customized to some extent. Whether a customer is buying a new or used cart, they will usually have us customize the cart in some way. Oftentimes what we have on the showroom floor will be used as a starting point for how they want their cart built. The options and accessories available for golf carts are myriad. Our job is just to help the customer figure out what they want and build it for them.”

Gritten notes that some people use golf carts to regain their freedom and independence.

“We have built many carts for people who are elderly or disabled, and aren’t able to operate a car but can operate a golf cart legally,” he says.

Golf cart street legality in Indiana is determined by town ordinances.

“The owners’ golf carts allow them to get out and do their own shopping, visit

friends, and make their way to the park or their favorite fishing hole,” Gritten says.

“In these instances, golf carts can give back independence to those who have lost a measure of it. They can also provide more independence to those who otherwise would never gain the freedom they desire.”

Find an Ultimate Checklist

that it will get you on the right track and keep you from forgetting about areas like baseboards, vents or those pesky blinds.

Create a Schedule

Just like you might plan out meals each week, try setting up a cleaning schedule. Not only will this help you stay on top of everything much easier, but it also spreads out the work so that you aren’t letting your cleaning take over an entire day. Try doing some tasks every other day of the week, like floors on Mondays, windows on Wednesdays, bathrooms on Thursdays and laundry on Sundays. Blast your favorite tunes while scrubbing that toilet or mopping the floors. We all know those long handles make the best faux microphones.

While cleaning isn’t always everyone’s favorite, good smells usually make us feel good. Here’s a fun little recipe for DIY garbage disposal cleaner bombs that are sure to make your kitchen smell amazing. You’ll need mainly baking soda, citric acid, essential oils, a mini spray bottle, castile soap diluted with water, and a silicone mold. Castile soap is optional but the water is still necessary, as it’s the binder of the recipe.

Start by mixing the dry ingredients - two cups of baking soda and one cup of citric acid - together in a bowl. You can mix together by using a fork, and make sure to break up the little clumps that the baking soda is most likely going to try to form.

If using castile soap, pour a small amount in the spray bottle and dilute with water. Next, you’ll add 15 to 20 drops of essential oils to dry the mixture. Be sure to drop all over the mixture and not just in one spot. Topchoice essential oils for this recipe would be citrus burst or lemon, but you can use whatever scent you’d like. Once again, use a fork to mix so you can break up the clumps the oils are sure to create. Distribute the oils

as best you can throughout the entire dry mixture.

Next, sparingly spray the water over the dry ingredients and start mixing with your hands. You don’t want to add too much water, so go slowly. Remember, you can’t take it back once you drop it in. You’ll know the mix is ready when it starts to clump, which means it’s time to fill the molds.

Next, you’ll make balls and push them into the mold. Don’t fill all the way to the top, as the mixture/bombs will most likely expand and puff up when they start to dry out. Madison Niehaus, a senior at Westfield High School, has developed a love for photography that has helped her become a valuable part of the school’s yearbook staff.

She regularly takes photos of Westfield High School football games and many other school events.

“At first my photos just started off being for my own benefit, and for my friends that got the pictures,” Niehaus says. “I truly loved just taking photos. My only platform for pictures at the time was Instagram. I had never thought about doing football pictures, so I could get my senioryear photos in the student section.”

Niehaus was asked by one of her friends on the football team to take pictures at a scrimmage game, and she agreed to try something new.

“I had never shot football before,” Niehaus says. “Looking back at it, it was way more than a learning experience. It was truly one of my best experiences. I met another local photographer, David Dixon, a couple games into the season, and he has guided me and taught me many things that I am so thankful for.”

Niehaus says Dixon constantly gets her new exposure to different events, along with many learning opportunities.

“A couple weeks into the season, the yearbook and photography teacher had asked if I would share my pictures for the yearbook, and I agreed,” she says. “In return he let me use the school’s cameras. It was the best thing to ever happen to me.”

Niehaus adds that those cameras changed her whole experience, and gave her more opportunities than she could have ever imagined.

“The Christmas of my eighth-grade year, my parents had bought me a nice camera because I had begged for one,” she says. “To no surprise, I used it for about a week and then forgot about it. My mom had then taken over the camera and started using it for my soccer games, and my interest then sparked again.

I started taking it to all my friends’ sporting events, and sometimes even made them do tacky photo shoots for me. During the spring of 2021, the baseball season was when I really found my love for sports photography. My Instagram really started with the Westfield baseball season my junior year.”

“I started having more of the school’s moms reach out and express their appreciation,” she says. “That made me love it even more.

During the second trimester I joined the yearbook staff, which gave me even more experiences. Because of yearbook I have shot swimming, speech and debate. I also shot performing arts and everyday life. Every second I’m behind the lens is more learning for me. Niehaus says she first developed an interest in photography during eighth grade.

Niehaus enjoys documenting school activities.

“Being an athlete, I love having pictures to look back on of me during my games,” Niehaus says. “It’s always the highlight of my day having a photographer at my games.

That being said, I love being able to give that feeling to others. I love capturing the moments that people will be able to cherish for a lifetime. I truly enjoy the happiness students, parents and others receive from my photos. It’s an amazing feeling to be able to do such a small act to make such a large impact.”

Niehaus isn’t sure yet if she will pursue photography as a career.

“I plan on double-majoring in political science and Spanish,” Niehaus says. “I have already planned on contacting the other sports teams there about continuing my photography. I would love to be able to continue my passion throughout college, and make the same mark there as I did here in Westfield.”

Wherever she goes, Niehaus says she will always love Westfield.

“What I like best about Westfield is the community,” she says. “I moved to Westfield in the middle of the eighth grade and “While what I’m majoring in doesn’t haven’t regretted it for a second. Matt Trnian, the new director of the Grand Park Sports Campus, says he has been enjoying his new job and is looking forward to the future.

“There are so many great things that take place here and I want us to be able to continue to build on that success,” Trnian says. “I’ve seen so many positive events and games take place here since I started, and it’s been great to be a part of it all.”

Trnian started at Grand Park as an intern in May of 2014. He has seen a multitude of positive changes through the years.

“I’ve really experienced the growth of the campus as well as the growth of the Westfield community,” he says. “The people in Westfield have been so supportive and have built the park into the success it is.”

Trnian, who started as director on January 1, says the 400-acre campus has welcomed 2.5 million visitors per year.

“The Indianapolis Colts Training Camp has been a huge success,” Trnian says. “We have received a lot of positive comments from people on how much they enjoy having that here. The college summer leagues here have also been a tremendous success.”

Trnian adds that Grand Park has helped Westfield attract $1.5 billion in economic development.

“The staff here has done a great job of making sure all of the fields are in great shape.”

“What’s special about the park is the sheer size of the place, and how many fields are available for different teams,” he says. “We have people that travel here from all over, and families have told us how great they think the place is. The staff here goes out of their way to make sure families have a memorable experience.”

The Pacers Athletic Center, an 88,000-square-foot facility including eight basketball courts and a restaurant, has also been a big hit.

The park offers a field for almost any sport, and the field sports sections of the park include 31 multipurpose fields. They have been used for football, field hockey, rugby and lacrosse.

Trnian has been pleased with several of the non-sporting events that have taken place at Grand Park.

“We have a total of 60 fields,” Trnian says.

Trnian says the plan is to continue to maintain the high quality at Grand Park while expanding on other events.

“The 2021 Indiana Farm Equipment and Technology Expo here attracted 6,000 attendees,” he says. “We had a lot of positive

comments from the attendees and the exhibitors.”

There were more than 140 exhibitors and many expressed interest in returning for the next expo.

“The Suburban Indy Home and Outdoor Living Show is also taking place here,” Trnian says. “There will be over 200 exhibitors.”

Trnian says his plan is to maintain community involvement while continuing to grow the number of events at Grand Park.

“We are looking at new technology and infrastructure here to continue elevating the campus to even more success,” he says.

The role of fire chief comes with years of experience, high-level responsibilities and a commitment to community service.

Recently appointed Westfield Fire Department (WFD) Chief Rob Gaylor does not take that responsibility lightly. Gaylor has been with the WFD since 2004. Before that, he was certified as an emergency medical technician in 1995.

Gaylor started as fire chief the first week of January. At the January 10 Westfield City Council meeting, Mayor Andy Cook swore him in.

“My goal is to tell the story of Westfield Fire Department and be an advocate for the people,” Gaylor says.

Gaylor succeeds Chief Marcus Reed, who retired at the end of 2021, but doesn’t see himself as Reed’s replacement. He says his time as fire chief is very small, and that the department existed long before him and will continue to exist long after he’s gone.

“In my time here, previous chiefs have done great things for the organization and left their mark on it,” Gaylor says. “As I’ve been meeting with different stations, one thing I’ve been telling them is this is really their organization. I ask them where they want this to go, and I tell them it’s my job to lead them there.”

Gaylor most recently served as deputy chief for the department, and the chief of training and operations. He started in administration in 2008, and is actively involved in several public safety service organizations including

WFD currently employs 66 firefighters along with an administrative staff. Gaylor knows the role is a huge undertaking but is up for the challenge. WFD provides services beyond emergency response including public education and prevention via community events, building inspections, plan review, media campaigns, school visits, bilingual services, and grant writing.
