County for most of his life. “Now, we’re around 85 to 100 employees.” With a great deal of experience in landscaping, Broshears is part of a BAM Outdoor staff that has more than 100 years of combined landscaping experience. “I went to Ball State and obtained two degrees, marketing and psychology, and then went into lawn care in about 1991,” he says. “I worked for a company in Indianapolis, then one in Carmel, then one in Noblesville and then started BAM in 1999.” BAM Outdoor now works with all kinds of clients in the Central Indiana area, servicing everything from small gardens to large, corporate campuses and commercial properties.

“I would attribute our growth over the years to hard work, relationships and good employees,” Broshears says. “When we were small, I was so much more involved with every single deal. At this point, you’ve got other people that are doing some of the sales and that are taking care of a lot of the accounts just because we’ve grown. What it still boils down to is integrity, honesty and caring about our customers and our employees.” From tree services and plant health care to lawn care and more, the experts at BAM Outdoor can provide clients with the reliable landscaping help they need. This involves going through a series of

“We want to be able to retain our employees long-term, and also the clients and the customers. That’s where the service and the relationship come in.” strategic steps. “If a client were to call in about a landscape project, they would call the office, and then it would be sent to one of the landscape design people,” Broshears says. “The landscape design person would contact them back. They’d set up an appointment and go out and meet with them, listen to them, go through their project and assist them in any ideas by doing design. Then, they’d sign the contract, and we’d provide the service and workmanship.”

Over the years, Broshears has made sure to treat his employees right to make sure BAM Outdoor maintains their level of expertise. “We want retention,” Broshears says. “We want to be able to retain our employees long-term, and also the clients and the customers. That’s where the service and the relationship come in.” With all of this in mind, he also wants to make sure that BAM Outdoor continues to grow at an organic rate too. “Contained growth is a big thing,” Broshears says. “We want to be able to provide the service and quality that I expect, and that our customers have grown accustomed to.”

great one in a matter of two minutes,” she says. “I like to find music that can do that for other people, music that can make their day better or make them feel content.” Rhodes is also involved in track and field and technical theatre at Westfield High School. Outside of school, she also works with a vocal and guitar coach, Austin Johnson, every week. “I’ve been working with Austin since I was in fourth grade, and I couldn’t be more blessed to have him,” Rhodes says. “Austin has helped me really progress with my vocal confidence, as well as my overall confidence in general, which I think is very important for a musician. He has helped me learn some intense guitar songs, and has recorded most of my covers on my website.” Rhodes also spends a lot of time blogging. “I started my blog to talk to fellow musicians and youths in general about how I get through and how I’m starting my career

in music,” Rhodes says. “But it leads to something more, and I think my blog really allowed me to open up with some of my own personal thoughts and gave me a way to express myself outside of music.” Rhodes wants her blogs to be something that people can read and relate to. “I want them to say, ‘I get it’ or ‘I feel the same way too,’ just so that they don’t feel alone, because no one should feel alone,” she says

Rhodes adds that she loves the way people in Westfield support each other. “It’s a place where people, especially students, are encouraged to make their own plans and seek them out,” Rhodes says. “The whole community of Westfield is really student-based and gives us a lot of chances to do what we want to do. It also lets us focus on what we love, instead of just telling us how we should be doing something or what we should do with our lives.”

Writer / Stephanie Weber Photographer / Casey Ardizzone & Collin Weber

Spring back is upon us, and airport fashion is a “thing,” but it’s definitely not a new concept. My grandmother is 90 years old and traveled to California and Hawaii in October 2016. She arrived at the airport in

heels and a stylish hat, ready to board her five-hour flight to Los Angeles. Travel style is different for everyone, but in most cases, it involves some version of casual and comfortable. In other cases, it might involve business professional or a dressier look. I’ve created a list with five style basics so you can plan your own airport outfit.

1. A STAPLE HAT.

I don’t think I’ve been on a plane in the last seven years without a hat. If it’s not on my head during the flight, it’s in my carry-on for easy access. Hats are great for those early morning flights when you don’t have time to do anything with your hair. Whether you choose a fedora or a baseball cap, hats are a travel necessity.

12 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / MARCH 2018 / WestfieldMag.com

2. JOGGERS.

This is a trend I can fully stand behind as they are comfortable, but also trendy. Joggers can be dressed up or down making them a versatile piece to wear later in your trip too. I like to pair mine with a graphic tee and a denim jacket for travel days. 3. LAYERS

experience more positive. These five style basics are the necessities for your upcoming travel plans. Whether you’re driving or flying to your destination, you can follow these guidelines for a comfortable day. Wherever you’re headed, be sure to use the hashtag #TRENDYTRAVEL, so I can follow along your journey. Here’s to new adventures.

You never know what the temperature might be like in the airport or on the plane. A jacket or sweater is advisable so you can adjust to these differences. 4. C OMFORTABLE SHOES THAT SLIDE OFF EASILY.

Going through security is no easy feat, but if you wear shoes that slide on and off, it makes this process smoother. I like to wear shoes that cover my feet to keep them warm, but sandals are an easy choice for beach getaways. Comfort is key, especially if you might be running to catch a connection. 5. B ACKPACK OR CROSSBODY

When you check your bag and go through security, you have to show I.D. twice. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve temporarily misplaced my I.D. because I just threw it in my bag. If you have a backpack or small crossbody to store your cards and cash, your travel day will be a breeze. BONUS TIP

After traveling domestically and internationally over the last few years, I’ve learned that less is more. Bringing a small bag in addition to my backpack is easiest for me so I don’t have to mess with a roller carry on that may or may not fit in the overhead compartments. I know this isn’t exactly style related, but it will make your travel

WZPL RADIO PERSONALITY & WESTFIELD RESIDENT, DAVE SMILEY, IS LOVING LIFE ON THE AIRWAVES Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Jamie Sangar

Ever since he was a little boy, Dave Smiley was fascinated by radio. Raised in Pella, Iowa, his father was a pastor and owner of two Christian radio stations. “I spent a ton of time at the radio stations around the turntables and cassette tapes and often fantasized about hosting my own show,” says Smiley, who as a boy got himself a microphone and a Radio Shack mixer and started interviewing the neighbors. “I’d ask normal questions but then take their audio out of context to make it funny,” says Smiley, who admits to being the class clown, always trying to get a laugh from his peers. He later gained on-air experience by volunteering at his high school’s radio station. His dad also let him work a few hours a week at his Christian stations. Then fresh out of high school, he landed a job in New York City at Z100, working as a promotions assistant during the evenings and playing a character called “Bubba the Love Sponge” on the morning show. For eight months, Smiley worked crazy long hours. Burning the candle at both ends, however, proved to be exhausting, so at age 19 he returned home and worked at an oldies station in Des Moines during the weekdays and a station in Omaha on the weekends. When a colleague offered him a job at a station in San Diego, he jumped at the chance, then quickly progressed through the ranks — doing overnights, then nights, then afternoons until he landed the coveted morning slot. WestfieldMag.com / MARCH 2018 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / 17

Dave Smiley lives in Westfield with his wife Sarah and two boys, Noah and Austin.

“PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON AROUND TOWN BECAUSE THEY’RE PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS CITY AND SO AM I.” Dave remained in San Diego for eight years until ratings started to slide and he was let go. But since he also worked weekend shifts in Los Angeles at Kiss FM, a connection there invited him to relocate to a station in Phoenix. “Nine months into my contract, they fired me and put Howard Stern on when he was on Terrestrial radio,” says Smiley, who remained in the area for another year, mostly to soak in the Scottsdale party scene. One day he was hiking Camelback Mountain when he got a job offer from WZPL in Indianapolis. He moved back to the Midwest in May 2002 with low expectations. “I honestly didn’t think this was going to be my home,” admits Smiley, who approached the Smiley Morning Show with a new mindset. “I used to get so uptight when something went bad on the show. I couldn’t snap out of it. I decided in Indy I wasn’t going to stress so much.” His laid-back, goofy attitude proved to be the golden formula for success as he’s now been in Indy for 15 years.

“Listeners seem to appreciate my weirdness,” Smiley says with a chuckle. Though the show gives him a platform in which to entertain, he also uses it to help others. For instance, in late November or early December, the Smiley Morning Show participates in the Make-A-Wish Request-A-Thon where Dave and his team (Toni DeKeyser, Nikki Reed, and Will Pfaffenberger) remain on air for 36 straight hours, accepting donations for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. Other annual events include Smiley’s Pumpkin Drop in which they drop a gigantic pumpkin from the roof at the Shops at Perry Crossing, and the Smiley Prom, held in April, a wildly popular party that always sells out. (This year’s prom will take place on April 14.) In addition, the station hosts the Jingle Jam and the ZPL Birthday Bash. In 2012, Smiley shed his bachelor lifestyle and embraced matrimony with 18 / WESTFIELD MAGAZINE / MARCH 2018 / WestfieldMag.com

Sarah Brown. Two years later, the couple welcomed their first son, Noah. The trio moved to Westfield in 2016, and Austin joined the family in July 2017. “We bought a golf cart and in the summertime, especially, we drive our golf cart around to different restaurants or go to parks with the kids,” Smiley says of Westfield. “We also love the nice walking trails around here. In nice weather, we get the wagon out and pull Noah and Austin around.” He also loves his house in Westfield. “We fell in love with it when we saw it,” says Smiley, who built a karaoke stage in his basement. “That’s cool. We have a lot of fun down there.” Certainly, the most challenging aspect of Smiley’s job is the brutal sleep schedule, which requires him to rise weekdays at 3:30 a.m. (even more painful when one of his boys wakes him up in the middle of the night). He generally conks out for a twohour nap in the afternoon and is in bed by 10 p.m.

When he’s awake, however, he enjoys riffing with listeners — both on air and in person. The show does a segment called “Whatcha Doing at the Courthouse?” where Smiley stands in front of the downtown Indianapolis courthouse asking those who are leaving what brought them there. The public’s brutal honesty, coupled with Smiley’s quick wit, makes for great comedy. Smiley and his colleagues also share comments that listeners post to Twitter in a segment called “Mean Tweets.” These sometimes clever, often cruel tweets are directed at members of the Smiley Morning Show, but the crew laugh their way through them. “Our listeners are awesome,” says Smiley, who genuinely feels loved by the Indianapolis community. Often when people call in, before hanging up, he will call out, “Love you!” “I do it because I do love our listeners and it’s a way of connecting with them,” Smiley says. “It’s also fun to see who will say it back because guys, in particular, are caught off guard.” Connecting with listeners is Smiley’s favorite part of the job and one reason he’s thrilled the show isn’t syndicated. “If this was a generic, cookie-cutter show, I wouldn’t be able to talk about the people, the places and the things going on in the city,” Smiley says. “That’s our appeal. People want to know what’s going on around town because they’re passionate about this city and so am I.”

pizza, either by the slice or whole pizza. Then, in 2015, Scott Mobley became the President and Chief Executive Officer of Noble Roman’s. After careful consideration of the most prosperous market for the company, he decided their next move would be to open more sitdown establishments. Mobley says the stand-alone pizzeria is a “culmination of some of the best of our history combined with all-new, leading-edge technology and recipes to produce what we think will be a terrific growth vehicle for the future.” As Noble Roman’s made their plans to expand, which took more than two years of planning and development, it was natural to locate their newest store in the Westfield and Carmel area. Mobley says Westfield is prospering and growing, and they wanted to be part of it.

Being a hometown brand, it’s uncommon to find a Hoosier who doesn’t have fond memories of Noble Roman’s. Most people who’ve lived around the Indianapolis area remember the company’s sit-down restaurants and are thrilled to see the shift back to this model of business. For many, Noble Roman’s was their first employer. Others simply reminiscence about the role the restaurant played in their childhood. The Carmel and Westfield community has gladly welcomed the restaurant, bringing nostalgia to those familiar with it and a great new experience for first-time customers. “The community has been really gracious and receptive,” Mobley says. Noble Roman’s is even making plans to establish itself further in the community. So far, they’ve participated in a number of community charities and they’re in the process of screening nonprofits to partner with. Now, when both returning and new customers alike step into the new pub, they should feel a sense of nostalgia but also get a sense of what’s currently popular today, Mobley says. Some of their 13 flat screen TVs not only play sports but also black and white movie shorts and cartoons.

Noble Roman’s theme is that pizza should be fun, and it’s clear the new restaurant is ideal for friends and family to have a good time. There’s a lot of detail in the restaurant, an important aspect of creating an optimal customer experience that Mobley learned from his father, the founder of the company. There’s not one single thing that makes a pizzeria successful, Mobley says, all the small details must be taken care of. The space features an open kitchen so guests can watch the pizzamaking process. You won’t have much to see, though, as Noble Roman’s boasts cooking times of 2.5 minutes for traditional pizzas and 5.75 minutes for Sicilian pies. They sell affordable craft beer and wine, but guests will also find a root beer tap (for kids, but Mobley admits it’s one of his favorite parts) and what they call a ‘Dusting and Drizzle Station,’ where customers can customize pizza with things like rosemary olive oil. As for future plans for the company, Mobley says many more pubs are set to open around the Indianapolis area. The pub concept is part of their long-term growth plan.

That’s right. Here, you’ll discover stories unfolding in unexpected ways. Everyday, we preserve pop culture, excavate ginormous bones, and curate one-of-a-kind rarities to reframe big discussions. FIND WHAT’S NEXT. At the Indiana State Museum.

“We see the pub as a growth vehicle for the brand,” Mobley says. And it’s certain that the Westfield and Carmel community will be part of that.
