“We’ll have an afternoon session and an evening session. You’ll buy your ticket to come in, and the idea is that there will be tables in the middle of the room so you can eat all the chocolate you want. There will be different things to try, and you’ll get some chocolate to go.”

Latour says each of the chamber leaders will invite top-tier members for Friday’s VIP event.

“We might invite some other key partners and sponsors of the program to come for Friday as well,” Latour adds. “Since it takes a little bit of time to get a lot of this set up, we thought we could get set up for a special night on Friday, and then that way we’re ready to go for Saturday.”

There will be additional space in the building devoted to a mixology demonstration, as well as a chocolate-based cooking demonstration.

“Another fun thing is that we’ll have some of the chocolate vendors around the room, so if you like something you can go get more, or get with them for future events and things you may want to do for yourself,” Latour adds.

Companies based in Zionsville, Westfield, Tipton County and beyond will appear at the event.

“We were very intentional in choosing the name Hoosier Chocolate Fest, and not Westfield Chocolate Fest or something like that, because we’re hoping over the years this will grow, and really become a regional destination event over a couple of days that people can enjoy,” Latour says.

Latour says the two main motivators behind launching the event are the opportunity to promote local businesses, and also to provide the participating chamber organizations with a chance to work together on what they hope will be an annual event.

“We’re hoping it catches on and that we can make it bigger and bigger in the years to come,” Latour says. “It’s really a chance to highlight some outstanding chocolate companies and bakeries here in this region that a lot of people don’t know about.”

Interest from vendors has been high since the event team began reaching out to local chocolate makers, according to Latour.

“We’ve heard people say, ‘Whoa, this is great. I’m in,’” he says. “That feels good. People are pretty excited about it, and we’ve mentioned it to our different boards and they’re excited. With the date that it’s on, we think it will be a fun Valentine’s Day outing for people to go on besides just dinner and a movie. It’s all coming together and it should be fun.”

“I have chronic joint pain from all the lifting I’ve done over the years as well as some disc issues, and I come out feeling energized,” Dr. Seland says. “It’s like a battery charger for the body.”

Red light therapy is especially great for peripheral neuropathy and chronic pain such as joint arthritis. Many patients have even reported positive side effects from the treatment — for instance, relief from

PREVENTING CERVICAL CANCER WITH ROUTINE CHECKUPS

According to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition, more than 13,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Cervical cancer is one of the five cancer types that attack a woman’s reproductive system. However, it is the easiest gynecological cancer to prevent. It is also a very treatable type of cancer when it is caught early.

Prevention, cervical cancer cases and related deaths have decreased significantly in the last 40 years, largely due to many women getting regular Pap tests. It’s usually recommended to begin getting Pap tests at age 21, and they can be done at your gynecologist’s office during your yearly exam. After that, your doctor will tell you how often you need to be tested. For women age 30+, talk with your doctor about which testing option is recommended for you – a Pap test, HPV test or both.

GET THE HPV VACCINE.

LEARN ABOUT YOUR RISK FACTORS. Cervical cancer is caused by infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV) and there is no relationship to family history. Risky sexual activity, such as early onset of sexual activity and multiple partners, increase your risk for HPV infection. People who smoke or are immunocompromised are at high risk because both of these factors impair the patient’s ability to ever clear the virus and they remain persistently infected.

The HPV vaccine protects against the types of HPV that are most likely to cause cervical cancer and other gynecological cancers.

According to the National Cancer Institute, the HPV vaccine helps to prevent approximately 90% of cervical cancers in women who received the vaccine before the age of 17. The vaccine is recommended for girls between the ages of 11 and 26. Women over the age of 26 who have not yet gotten the vaccine, can still get it if it is recommended by your doctor.

Cervical cancer is very treatable when caught early. Don’t delay in scheduling your yearly checkup with your gynecologist.

“Along with that, there are inhalers of different kinds. Some have steroids and others are designed to get someone through an acute situation. The disease can progress to the point where patients need to carry an oxygen machine with them 24 hours a day.”

Cold weather is a high-risk time for seniors suffering from COPD. With already-compromised and inflamed lungs, they are more susceptible to falling ill with seasonal flu during the months of October through February. It is very important to keep track of, and be up to date on, all relevant vaccines.

“At Oak Street Health we stress the importance of not losing touch with your primary health provider,” Wilson says. “We are a very hands-on model and proactively schedule visits every three or four months. When someone is 12 years old, all they need is a yearly physical and their shots. With older patients, it’s important to catch them when they are healthy and do what needs to be done to stay healthy. It’s a lot better not to be behind the eight ball.”

After more than 10 years as part of the curriculum at Westfield High School, the Family and Consumer Sciences program has grown from one full-time teacher and four classes offered, to four fulltime teachers, 14 different courses and more than 1,200 students enrolled - and 850 of those are in the culinary arts program.

“After seeing how well the students connected with our first two culinary and nutrition classes in 2011 and 2012, it was clear that building a structured series of courses would serve our students well,” says Chef Nikki Heflin.

It’s a big growth spurt for a high school program, but Heflin believes that’s because the culinary arts program is something students see as skills that can be used immediately, and not just after graduation.

Students learn how to analyze menus at fast-food restaurants to make better choices, and then participate in labs where they can prepare quick, healthy and affordable meals at home. Higher-level students are trained in a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, and prepare recipes that are helpful as preparation for working in a variety of restaurants, from fast-casual to fine dining.

“The curriculum is rigorous, but students gain a sense of purpose and pride in working as a group, and as individuals, to master their various culinary skills,” Heflin says. “The curriculum is built so we can partner with our students and give them a platform to be young professionals, while we are still respected as their leaders.”

Heflin says that while the students essentially learn from the teachers, the teachers also learn from students.

Courses offered through the series include Nutrition and Wellness; Advanced Nutrition and Dietetics; Intro to Culinary Arts and Hospitality; Principles of Culinary Arts 1 - ServSafe; Principles of Culinary Arts - Basic Food Theory; and Baking and Pastry Arts.

The program has a dual-credit partnership with Ivy Tech Community College, offering high value for the courses. Three of the culinary courses are taught as dual-credit courses, including the two Principles of Culinary Arts courses and Baking and Pastry Arts. Students can qualify for up to eight college credits at no extra cost to them or their parents. Certifications can be earned through the nationally recognized ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification, which verifies that a manager or person in charge has sufficient food safety knowledge to protect the public from food-borne illness.

Services offered by Foodies Rock include an array of on- and offpremises catering, community cooking classes, custom desserts and participation in large-scale community events. Members are eligible to compete in state and national events hosted by the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).

“A hallmark of our program for many years has been hosting themed events led by our students that are open to the community,” Heflin says. “Our students will work in teams to develop a recipe based on a theme and then prepare 200 to 350 samples of their dish, all while also setting up a themed table and serving their dish during the event. Three events are hosted each year, with these events serving as the students’ final exams.”

In the future, the culinary arts program will partner with the school’s Environmental Club and utilize a grant to build a patio garden, where Foodies Rock participants can grow fresh herbs and potted vegetables. They’ll also have a composter to limit the amount of waste and to help make the patio garden self-sustaining.

“The goal of the garden is to teach the students how to grow their own food, practice sustainability, and to reduce food costs and waste,” Heflin says.

STUDENT INSPIRES COMMUNITY TO BUY GIFT CARDS

Joshua Newton, an eighth grader at Westfield Middle School, truly cares about his friends, and goes out of his way to help them.

Joshua, the January Student of the Month, has strongly demonstrated community leadership, and what it means to really be a good friend to friends who greatly appreciate him.

Joshua was also able to get his classmates at Westfield Middle School heavily involved in a very worthy project that provided comfort and inspiration to a good friend and his family.

Joshua’s mother, Lindsey Newton, said when Joshua received some sad news about a friend’s sibling, he came up with a great and noteworthy idea. It was also an idea that inspired Westfield residents to dig into their pockets for a very worthy cause.

“Joshua found out about a cancer diagnosis of his friend Lincoln Hoffman’s youngest sister, Londyn, so he coordinated $5 Starbucks gift card donations from his classmates to be used to give out to Londyn’s healthcare workers as thank you’s,” Lindsey says. “Londyn has Rhabdomyosarcoma (a rare type of cancer that forms in soft tissue).”

Joshua’s wonderful and kind gesture was an overwhelming success. He was able to convince a great number of people to buy the Starbucks gift cards. He’s displaying great leadership qualities at an early age.

“He sold almost 500-1,000 of the cards, which have been special tokens for the Hoffman family to give to Riley nurses and healthcare workers as appreciation,” Lindsey says. “It’s a way that the Hoffman Family could pay it forward to everyone coming in contact with Londyn!”

The Starbucks gift cards were also a unique way to show support for a good friend,

and also get different individuals involved.

People in Westfield have really stepped up to show their support for the hard-working healthcare providers.

Joshua was also looking out for friends in need by getting his class fired up to really help out.

“Knowing the Hoffman family were going through a lot, and being able to know they had support from their friends, Joshua wanted to make sure Lincoln, Londyn’s brother, felt the support too. He was able to rally his teammates together to show that support to Lincoln,” Lindsey says.
