WELCOME We would like to welcome you to the 5th Annual Vines for Life Event! Thank you so much for joining us in celebrating three worthy Geist area cancer charities: Creating Hope, Indy SurviveOars and Team Luke!

Back in 2004, we had the privilege of meeting the Gianfagna family while writing a story about their Creating Hope Walk in Windermere. They were still mourning the loss of their daughter and founder of Creating Hope, Jeannette. We met after the race for coffee and learned more about their mission of helping cancer patients through their Hope Kits.

Creating Hope made an immediate connection with Jeanne. We lost her mother, Alice, to cancer in 2001. Similar to Jeannette, the time she spent on crafts, painting and other creative activities brought her the most joy in her final years. That’s when we decided to organize the first “Southern Indiana Wine Tour”. To us, wine is a celebration of life and we thought it was a great way to bring others together in support and celebration of the lives of those battling cancer.

About five years later, the wine tour concept evolved into the Vines for Life idea and we invited two other Geist cancer charities who were also giving cancer patients a boost, Team Luke and Indy SurviveOars to join us. We are so inspired by these three charities’ collective missions and feel so fortunate to be able to bring them together to further their missions of enhancing patients’ lives through the creative process, music, physical fitness and teamwork.

Thanks to the graciousness of Republic National Distributing Company, Elite Beverages, Indianapolis Yacht Club, and The Hawthorns Golf & Country Club, this event has quickly grown to be a nearly 400-person tasting event that has raised over $105,000 in the last four years.

100 percent of the proceeds are split evenly amongst the three charities and used throughout the year to help cancer patients during a very trying time in their lives.

On behalf of our family and friends, many of which are volunteering tonight, we want to thank you for your support of these three inspiring, local charities. The true meaning of community is doing great things for people you may never meet. Tonight, we can all be proud of the community we are a part of and the people that we are helping.

MEET OUR CHARITIES TEAM LUKE

Team Luke was established by Todd and Vicky Andritsch in January 2008 to support their son, Luke (then 3-years-old), who was diagnosed with leukemia (ALL) in May 2007. The mission is twofold. First, to look to the future, by funding research to help improve treatments for blood cancers and ultimately find a cure. Second, to focus on the today, by helping patients and their families by providing therapeutic benefits of music.

Through Luke’s treatment, he developed a passion for music and found comfort, peace and healing while playing the drums. Team Luke has created and delivers Rhythm Pax. Rhythm Pax are percussion and therapeutic instruments, as well as music related items and DVD’s. These items allow patients and their families the ability to create, cope and heal during treatment, together.

Although Luke finished his treatment, the journey for Team Luke is just beginning.

Finding a cure to cancer, lessening the side effects of chemotherapy through improved treatments and helping patients while in treatment, will remain the focus. Team Luke’s goal is to make sure every child diagnosed in Indiana is able to “feel the cure” through Rhythm Pax. “One never knows the direction life will take after facing a journey with cancer. We are blessed beyond words. Not only do we have a healthy 10-year-old son, but we are so fortunate to now be in the position to make an impact in the lives of those facing cancer. What was once a 4% survival rate for Luke’s cancer, is now 90%, thanks to dedicated research. Team Luke has provided more than 200 patients with Rhythm Pax and also hosts quarterly hospital-wide drum circles for patients and their families at Riley Hospital. MEET OUR CHARITIES INDY SURVIVEOARS DRAGON BOAT RACING

Indy SurviveOars is a group of dedicated breast cancer survivors and others committed to the cause of breast cancer who are practicing the 2,000 year-old Chinese sport of dragon boat racing. Their name reflects the hometown connection to their breast cancer survivorship and homage to the steer oarsperson who guides the dragon boat on its course. The breast cancer survivors train to paddle together, support each other, learn from one another and overcome fear.

Don McKenzie, MD, a sports medicine physician at the University of British Columbia, launched “Abreast in a Boat” in 1996 to test the myth that repetitive upper body exercise in women treated for breast cancer encourages lymphedema. His myth proved to be true. An emerging body of research suggests physical activity not only has a positive effect on quality of life following a diagnosis of cancer, but it may also improve survival.

The IndySurviveOar team trains at Geist Reservoir during the warmer months with winter workouts held at the Riviera Club and SoBeFit. Volunteers, donations and sponsorships are all needed to help the team grow.

The event has not only raised funds to help the team with race entry fees, equipment repair and maintenance, and given all members the opportunity to attend races, but has also helped provide a more visible platform for our organization. MEET OUR CHARITIES CREATING HOPE

Creating Hope is a unique non-profit providing free art and instruction materials directly to cancer patients of all ages, with a mission to help cancer patients reduce their pain, stress and anxiety through self expression. John and Tina Gianfagna lost their daughter Jeanette to cancer. She was just 39. While on her cancer journey, Jeanette founded Creating Hope.

Jeanette told her doctors that the activity took her to another place, a time without pain and anxiety. She tried to make creative expression part of her daily healing regimen, and found that the days she painted were her best days. Even though she was going through treatment herself, Jeanette managed to help patients experience the healing benefits that come from painting and coloring.

The medical profession now believes that self expression reduces pain, anxiety and lifts a patient’s mood. Creating Hope has provided more than 7,000 Hope Kits, consisting of quality art materials and instruction books direct to those battling cancer.

John and Tina, along with volunteers, continue Jeanette’s mission. They work directly with patients at the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center and VA Hospital downtown. They also conduct workshops for patients and care givers throughout Indiana.

“The prior years’ Vines for Life events benefited Creating Hope in many ways. It brought many Creating Hope friends together for spectacular evenings, some folks we hadn’t seen since Jeanette’s passing. Our cost for each Hope Kit is approximately $50.

Try your luck and take home some wine with you this evening at our mystery wine pull. For only $25 per pull, you could take home a bottle of $25 wine, or $180 bottle of wine! All wines are reds!
