FULTON COUNTY CHORAL CLUB WORKS IN HARMONY Writer / Robert Noah Torres Photography Provided

The Fulton County Choral Club (FCCC) is a community nonprofit organization that is composed of dedicated and fun-loving women who make up its four-part chorus.

Though there are more than four members, the core group is made of a first and second soprano and first and second alto. The FCCC is all about practicing the art of singing, having fun and working together in harmony. Harmony in all respects. The women that make up the club practice, practice, and practice but

don’t just do it for themselves, they do it to give back to one another and their community at large. The Fulton CO. 4-H Fairgrounds, where practice is held three times a month, is not only a place to harmonize in song but a place of internal and external harmony. Internally, the mostly retired group of women that make up the FCCC love to blend their voices in harmony which, according to president Linda Wade, is a “part of you that never retires.” Externally, the club gives back by hosting community events and participating in various choral

shows in and around Fulton County. More than a group of dedicated and generous women, those who make up the FCCC are family — a family that works hard and loves what they do. While there exist roles in the club, the participants all share responsibility and help look after one another. Leadership in the club concerns maintaining their schedules, keeping track of program music, and, most importantly, expressing affection and concern for other members. While there exist roles in the club, all of those who are a part of it take on leadership roles as is necessary. No member is greater than the other and all help one another, as a family does. Amongst this family of harmonious voices and affectionate women, there is a musical mascot. The four-year-old daughter of one of the members has been with the club since she was a newborn. She helps where she can and flutters around the space brightening it up with her playful

spirit. Sometimes she will sit next to the accompanist and softly twiddle with the keys or she may stand next to the director and help orchestrate the best she can. Whoever first arrives at the 4-H fairgrounds helps in setting up — bringing out the piano, putting out information the women may need, and greeting those arriving with love and care makes up the start of rehearsal. Prayer and concerns are given out at the beginning as well, along with cards to be signed and sent out if need be. From there they practice. “It is work - it is not just opening your mouth and beautiful sounds always comes out,” Wade says. “In many instances, one of the vocal parts has to do a breakdown on their lines with just their notes being played.” Their practice of the music they select is like practice for anything, they go over a measure or two countless times until it is time to perform.

The Fulton County Choral Club is a part of the Extension Homemakers of Fulton County as well as a part of the state Melody Makers of Indiana. The Fulton County Choral Club started in 1936 and has been a stable part of the Extension program ever since. The purpose of the club is to create and maintain a place of friendship and belonging. The FCCC is a place to give back. Even if only when they gather to sing, though they do much more. The women who make up the club are there to give back to each other and their community. In the future, the FCCC aims to keep singing and growing. As they braved the thick of a global pandemic, their numbers are beginning to soar again despite being reduced to half their size prior. As numbers grow, the club plans to work on a Spring Show for 2023. The Spring Show has typically been an event filled with whole group and small group participants as well as one special comedy trio. In the future, the FCCC aims to accompany this with pageantry and choreography.

Jessica Strickler, owner of Revive Nutrition, says her business is improving the health of many people in the area. Revive Nutrition, which started on January 10, is promoting a healthier and happier lifestyle for individuals in Fulton County. The business is a nutrition club that serves nutritional shakes, energizing teas and aloe. “I previously worked at the Revive Nutrition in Wabash, Indiana, and I really loved it,” Strickler says. “I became very interested in the business because I liked their drinks so much. I also learned a lot about all of the wonderful things they do. I love the way they are so communityoriented, and look out for the health and well-being of people.” Strickler worked at the Wabash Revive Nutrition for a year before she decided to

Strickler says was a regular customer at the Wabash Revive Nutrition before she worked there. “I worked as a lunch lady at one of the schools in Wabash, and I would go get a delicious tea bomb and a shake at the Revive Nutrition in Wabash every day,” Strickler says. “It was a great part of my routine, and it was a positive way to get my day going in the right direction. I want to share that same great taste and feeling with everyone in Rochester. It was worth it for me to take the chance.”

“The old abstract business involved creating a condensed version of the county records for a certain piece of real estate, in a book form,” Erickson explains.

Jon McKesson and his wife, Lynn Erickson, are the third generation to carry on the work that began in 1919 when attorney D.L. McKesson founded McKesson Abstract & Title Company. Those records are part of local history, recording the ownership of Marshall County land, beginning with the Potawatomi to the present ownership. The abstract is a shortened notation of this ownership and includes deeds, mortgages, wills and any other legal documents associated with the parcel of land. “While the old abstracts are fascinating to read, at least to a title nerd like myself, they did involve a lot of typing and not a lot of guarantees of validity,” Erickson says. “Eventually the market demanded that landowners receive an insured guarantee that their ownership was complete and free of liens or encumbrances. “ The preferred proof of this clear title is title insurance. McKesson Abstract & Title became McKesson Title Corporation in 1978. Title insurance is used for real estate transactions, and also when divorces or estates dictate a change in ownership of property.

history of real estate parcels,” Erickson says. “We now create a title commitment, which is a document of about 10 pages.” Contained within this lengthy document are the names of involved parties, from titleholder or sellers to lenders and buyers, and also any liens imposed on the title such as taxes, judgements, mortgages, pending lawsuits, mechanic’s liens and more. “The title commitment also clearly tells the customer what action is required in order to effectuate the sale of the property,” Erickson says. “It’s a very useful 10 pages.” Most lenders and attorneys prefer to have title agencies handle real estate closings, and these clients keep Erickson and her staff busy. May was a particularly busy month, as many potential buyers and sellers hoped to close deals before interest rates rose. McKesson Title’s clients are not only real estate professionals. “Our customers can be farmers, businesses, banks, attorneys, real estate brokers or individuals - anyone who needs

Whether it is a real estate closing, mortgage loan application, new construction loan or even those requesting a 1031 tax exchange, McKesson strives to complete the requirements efficiently and accurately. Erickson praises her employees, Jean, Cheryl, Jess, Angie and Karlee, all of whom she says are family and expert at their work. “McKesson Title is so fortunate and proud to have such knowledgeable, experienced, capable employees,” she says. community, there is a familiarity that extends beyond the services provided to clients. Erickson says Plymouth’s smalltown vibe has made loyal customers friends. It is not unusual for customers to walk into the office to ask questions or seek advice. “Neither my husband nor I ever imagined that we would do this type of work,” Erickson says. Jon has a master’s degree in fine arts and made a living as a painter, after having been a successful newspaper columnist in Indianapolis. Erickson has a degree in parks and recreation and came to Plymouth after graduating from Indiana University Bloomington. “When we first moved to Plymouth I asked several of the city officeholders about working with the parks and told them about my degree, and that I grew up with a father who was a city planner and parks

department president as a side job,” she says. “I felt I had something to offer.” She received a job offer to work as a lifeguard at the city pool. She turned it down and instead joined her husband’s family business. “Neither Jon nor I have a single regret,” Erickson says. “We love this work and this business and this community with a passion. MUSIC MATTERS HONEYWELL ARTS ACADEMY FOSTERS MUSICAL EXCELLENCE Writer / Angela Cornell Photographer / Kari Lipscomb

Honeywell is a company that is well-known for innovative technology across many fields. What few people realize, however, is that Founder Mark C. Honeywell had a soft spot in his heart for the arts, to the point that he wanted to establish something that would celebrate some of the most beautiful parts of culture for generations to come. Where better to establish a center for the arts than in his hometown of Wabash, Indiana? “Mark had a heart for Wabash and he wanted to leave, as a part of his legacy, a community foundation which could be an asset that would be available to all of the community,” explains Honeywell Foundation Board Chairman Dave Haist. Through the years the Honeywell Foundation has evolved to fit the needs of the music community. Today it encompasses

a full fellowship summer institute known as the Honeywell Arts Academy, with three tracks. The first, Resonance, is for innovative musicians. Soundboard is for pianists. The original track, which has been around since 2008 and has gathered great renown among professional bassists, is Wabass Institute, which is for double bassists. Each of these tracks gives gifted artists from around the world an inspirational environment to develop their skills and learn what it takes to thrive as a professional musician, all in an intensive summer session. The students are hand-selected during the application process and come on full scholarship. “The students who come pay no tuition to be involved in this program,” Haist says. “It’s an amazing opportunity for them, and as a result we’re able to attract the cream-of-the-crop talent.” Throughout the students’ stay, they are under the tutelage of faculty mentors and fellowship scholars, spending the day

together sharing knowledge. “If you look at the instructors who come in to share their experience, knowledge and talent with each of these three tracks, that faculty is also folks from around the United States who are affiliated with philharmonics and other arts organizations - just really top talent that is brought in each summer to work with the students,” Haist explains.

There are three sessions each day that include workshops, group performance, entrepreneurial development and so much more. Then, on the final Friday before the end of the session, each track performs a public showcase debut. The Wabass performance is scheduled to take place on July 1.

The alumni from this program go on to make a difference in the world in the area of music. “If you looked at all of the alumni from the Academy, 97% or 98% of them today are involved in some professional way with a philharmonic or with a symphony orchestra, or some other professional music engagement literally all over the country, and some international students as well,” Haist says. “This isn’t just a Wabash thing THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JULY 2022 / TownePost.com

or an Indiana thing. This is really something that has people coming from all over the country. I think it really makes it distinctive.” All of this happens in Eagles Theatre, which has a rich history of its own. In the century that it has been in use, this beautiful fourstory building has been on the vaudeville circuit, used as a movie theatre, and an events venue. After the Honeywell Foundation purchased the theater about 10 years ago, they decided to hone in on their vision for the building’s future. “The Eagles could be far more than a building and far more than a theater,” Haist says. “As a result, the community raised nearly $17 million to fully renovate the Eagles Theatre and to provide funds for future programming.” With those funds, there was a 600-person theater put in with an additional state-ofthe-art movie theater in the basement. The building also has a fully restored historic ballroom known as the Parkview Ballroom, a conference space, and studios for

recording and music lessons. “Every inch of that four-story historic building now has just been totally renovated and is usable as a beautiful facility for all types of art,” Haist says. Even when the Academy is not busy

with students at the theater, it still hosts philharmonics, country-western musicians and more. Moving forward, the Honeywell Foundation expects the Academy to expand with additional tracks so other instrumental

disciplines can be explored, to help gifted musicians on their way to becoming professionals. However, no one fully knows what the future has in store. “There are also whole hosts of other ways the Academy could be engaged with students of different ages, and potentially even students who

JON GATES IS ENJOYING THE LINKS LIFE AT PRETTY LAKE GOLF CLUB Writer / Lois Tomaszewski Photographer / Jubilee Edgell

An excellent golf course is measured by many considerations - the condition of the greens, the total yardage, toughness of the course, and how well it is maintained. There is also another consideration - access to a top-notch golf shop.

Owner Jon Gates has pro shops that have been included in the 100 Best Golf Shops by Golf Digest publications.

Playing on the golf team for four years, he served as team captain in 1980, was named Jon Gates, the owner of the golf shop at to the All-Mid-American Conference, and Pretty Lake Golf Club in Plymouth, brings was named EMU’s Most Valuable Golfer years of experience and award-winning in 1980. made the 100 Best Golf Shops director’s list three times in his career. He also won three Michigan Sectional Merchandiser of the Year awards and the Indiana Merchant of the Year for public and private clubs. Criteria for these awards included merchandising plans, visuals, and add-ons offered in the shop. Golfers today have access to more product selection than in the past, Gates says. Golf shops need to keep up with the industry.

“Forty years ago, there were maybe 10 different companies that supplied merchandise,” he says. “Now there might be 50 or more.” Customers are also being more price conscious. There are limited big-box stores,

so the local pro shop is often their only option for golf equipment and accessories. Gates also notes that the formality of golf has loosened up. Players are more casual about the game today than in the past. Younger players bring their own

perspective. Gates says it is important to tune into what attracts younger players to golf. They are the sport’s future, he says. That includes how players are drawn to the course, the type of attire to offer in the shop and the way

Gates and his wife have settled into the slower pace of Marshall County after making the move from Detroit. The new lifestyle is very laid back compared with what he is used to. He likes that there are no traffic jams, the cost of living is lower, and its vibe is casual. It is quite different from the hustle and bustle of Detroit, he says. WINNING RECIPE EMBRACE TRADITION BY CRAFTING DISTINCTIVE RECIPE CARDS Writer / Abby Renz Photography Provided

We all have a favorite recipe, whether it be grandma’s famous snickerdoodles with the perfect amount of cinnamon, dad’s prized barbecue sauce for slathering on rib meat that falls right off of the bone, or the secret ingredient to a prize-winning chili at the state fair that you look forward to every year. Now, where would you keep those treasured instructions? One might keep the simple, go-to, mundane recipes on their tablet or laptop, but what about great-grandma’s pie recipes? We surely wouldn’t have those floating around aimlessly through cloudbased software, now would we? And a hurried scrawl on a legal pad doesn’t quite do it justice either. Why don’t we truly honor these precious recipes by writing them on recipe cards, or even creating a recipe book to be enjoyed for generations to come? I have recipe cards for sharing with friends and family, and as an artist I have enjoyed watercoloring my very favorite go-to recipes, meticulously writing all of the instructions screens when the beauty of cursive has been and ingredients. While I like the idea of a summer bucket list, it can feel a bit overwhelming. I prefer to make a short list, so I feel a sense of accomplishment when I can complete the list. Here are 5 inexpensive ideas to add to your summer bucket list. I guarantee you’ll save money and have some fun this summer.

1.

I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM … VISIT AN ICE CREAM SHOP!

It doesn’t seem like summer unless I’m standing in front of an ice cream stand. I have many fond memories of visiting ice cream shops when I traveled with my family. I enjoy standing in line and chatting with other customers about what they plan to order. Long lines don’t matter to me when there’s an ice cream treat waiting at the end. My favorite ice cream splurges are a hot fudge sundae and a cherry soda with vanilla ice cream. Go with a group of family or friends and each choose something different. Ask for recommendations and try some fun flavor combinations. Make it a contest and vote on who ordered the best ice cream treat. Award the winner a gift card from the ice cream shop.

HAPPY HUMMINGBIRDS. SET UP A HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER.

These tiny birds bring me so much joy. A hummingbird feeder is an inexpensive investment. Most feeders run between $10-$20. You will need a pole or a stand to hang the feeder and they are around $20 or less. It’s easy to make the hummingbird nectar. It’s one part sugar to four parts water (1 cup of sugar 4 cups of water) and let boil. Let the solution cool and fill the feeder. Hummingbirds are attracted to red, so be sure you have some red objects near the feeder. You can have red flowers or even a red patio umbrella. Hummingbirds will visit the feeder a handful of times a day. Believe me, they are fun to watch and sometimes I’ll have three or four at the feeder at one time. Delightful! For more information on hummingbirds, visit the National Audubon Society at audubon.org.

VISIT A FARMERS MARKET

Summer is the time to appreciate local produce and other homemade goods. I enjoy stopping at a local farmers market and thinking of different things to cook. It’s a way for me to jump out of my comfort zone. I set a budget for myself before I go the market. A trip to the market doesn’t have to be expensive. A stop at a farmers market can be one-stop shopping for breads, dairy, produce and meat all in one trip. On a recent trip to my local farmers market, I purchased a loaf of country white bread, a couple of spice packets to make a fantastic meal, and some fresh produce. When I’m finished shopping, I sit on a bench and do some people watching and listen to music. It’s also a good time to see if I need to get anything else. I usually decide to make a few more stops at the market before I leave. THE LAKES MAGAZINE / JULY 2022 / TownePost.com

GO FOR A SUNSET WALK

Some of the best sunsets are during the summer. You can’t beat the mix of amber and violet hues. I take my dog, Louis for long sunset walks, and I always bring my phone. It’s a chance to capture a few photos and send to friends and family. I get some ideas by looking at my neighbors’ yards. As an extra bonus, you’ll be getting in a healthy workout while enjoying a gorgeous sky. Perfection!

CHILL AND GRILL

I can sometimes get into a grilling rut. Summer is the perfect time to shake up your grilling game. I like to make kabobs (veggie, chicken, shrimp, steak), which are inexpensive if you buy the ingredients and assemble them yourself. You can save money by using less meat and more vegetables. Don’t forget to season well with salt and pepper or spice mixes. Serve the kabobs with rice and a feta, tomato and cucumber salad and you’ve got a perfect meal. Grill packets are inexpensive and easy to make. Put veggies and potatoes in aluminum foil and season with salt, pepper and olive oil. Seal them up and cook them on the grill. Fajitas are another fan favorite. Choose your veggies, protein and put them on the grill. Any of these meals can be enjoyed outside. Want to save a little more money? Check the grocery store ads and select your grill meal based on what meat and produce is on sale. Make your meal fun by taking photos of your grilled feast. For more information on grilling, visit foodnetwork.com and search for grilling ideas and recipes.

or more than 45 years, Northern Indiana Power From the Past has been dedicated to educating children and adults about farm machinery of days gone by. The organization began in 1977 by a handful of antique tractors owners who approached the Pulaski County Fair board about exhibiting equipment at the fair. The attraction was so successful that one year later, the organization incorporated and doubled its membership to 16 individuals. This year the members will hold their annual Summer Show from July 14 through 17. More than 40,000 people typically attend the event, which not only showcases and demonstrates antique farm machinery with differing power sources, but also includes a very large flea market, food vendors and live entertainment. Also included are live demonstrations such as blacksmithing, woodworking and apple cider pressing. An important aspect of the organization, which is comprised of both men and women, is encouraging youth who are interested in agricultural careers. Each year it awards up to three scholarships to high school seniors. Recipients are generally involved in 4-H, come from farm families and have shown interest in Northern Indiana Power From the Past. Funds for the scholarships are generated from the yearly Summer Show revenue. Instructions for applying can be found on the

organization’s website. “After being an attraction at the 1977 county fair, eight guys got together and decided to create a club,” says John Crist, president. “Back then each member donated $100, so we started out with $800. The average age of the founders was early 30s. Today we are independent. We don’t ask for grants and we don’t ask for dues - just sweat. We get our money from the show. We hope that scholarship winners will stay involved with us.” The oldest machines the organization has in its collection are

from the early 1900s. Before combines existed, corn and wheat would be harvested and bound. It would lay in the fields until wagons would bring it back to the farm, where the wheat would be threshed and the corn kernels would be taken off the ear. This multi-step process took a lot of manpower, horse power and, later, steam power. From there the grain would go to a grist mill. “Back in the day a lot of folks built their own equipment,” says Scotty Hankla, co-vice president. “People were very inventive. If

It used a steam tractor engine.” The organization uses a building west of town that was donated by the late Ralph Braun to house its collection. All the machines are contributed by members of the community. Although there is a 30’x40’ workspace, machinery is tightly packed in. Due to size constraints, the only time the public is able to view the

antique machinery is at the yearly show. “People come from as far away as Canada as well as the west and east coasts,” Hankla says of the show. “Elder farmers love the stuff. At the show they can see demonstrations of equipment they saw being used when they were kids.” “The show’s live entertainment includes a local band every night,” Crist adds. “There is a horse pull on Saturday. ROLLING WITH CHANGE QUICK’S LANES IN PLYMOUTH IS LOOKING FOR A BUYER

Writer / Angela Cornell Photography Provided

Bowling has a long and rich history that dates back to at least 3000 B.C. The most modern version of the game, “ninepins,” started becoming popular in the mid-

1800s. However, it wasn’t until after the formation of the American Bowling Congress in 1895 that the game began to develop some standardization. After the Brunswick Corporation began creating bowling equipment in 1914, the game truly started gaining popularity. This continued

until pinspotter technology, which streamlined the process of setting up pins, was developed in 1951. That ushered in the golden age of bowling. According to bowl.com, more than 67 million people bowl every year and 1.2

million compete regularly in leagues in the U.S. Regardless of that fact, the sport is in decline. A USA Today article states that from 1998 to 2013, the number of bowling alleys in the U.S. declined by 26%. Of course, the pandemic has done the industry no favors. The bowling alleys that still exist hold to the proud tradition of bowling. Tim Quick, the owner of Quick’s Lanes in Plymouth, learned the business from his father, who owned and operated a bowling alley in Rochester. “My dad put up the first center down in that area in ’51 or ’52,” he says. “So from 10 years old and on, I was hanging around, doing things and learning, as well as my other two brothers - learning how to work on things.” He has several fond memories of growing up around the business, including watching as his dad’s bowling alley was updated with innovative technology. “He started with pin boys and then went to automatics in ’58,” Quick says. “Then we updated the Houseofdecor401.com

machine to underground in 1960. It’s faster as far as ball return and stuff like that. It revolutionized things.” After watching generations of bowlers come and go for birthday parties, graduation celebrations, Friday night gatherings and other events through the last 50 years, Quick has known for a while that it’s time to pass the baton and begin retirement. As much as he wants the building to continue as a bowling facility, a big-box store corporation has offered to purchase the property. Although it’s a sound business deal, it will leave a gap in the community. “I don’t think they’re planning on keeping the building,” Quick says. “They’ll buy it and rejuvenate the area for their purposes.” Quick would much prefer finding someone local to take over the business. “Being in bowling for that many years - watching all the families come in for birthday parties and groups, getting calls from the Boys & Girls Club wanting to do an outing, after-proms

- it’s a unique community thing,” Quick says. “I am desperate to find the alternative, which is someone else to run it.” His ideal candidate would be someone able to revive the business model. “Someone else who’s intrigued by it, or a business person who wants to expand their horizons, or is a community-minded person that wants to get into the grassroots,” Quick says. The facility comes with a small bowling equipment shop, a bar and a food license, along with 18 lanes. The lanes themselves have also been replaced, and several other improvements have been made in recent years. “We’re constantly investing in the building,” Quick says. He would also be willing to stay on in order to help during the transition, as well as teach the new owner machine maintenance.

LIFE SKILLS LOCAL STUDENT EXCELS IN JAG COMPETITIONS Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Mateo Salazar, a Jobs for America’s Graduates ( JAG) program participant at Tippecanoe Valley High School, says he will never forget attending a JAG Career Development Conference that enabled him to further his personal goals.

Salazar was one of several young people who competed against many other JAG students in competitions that gave them the opportunity to show their mastery of specific JAG competencies. Salazar, a graduating senior at Tippecanoe Valley High School, received first place at the regional competition, and then went on to the state competition. Salazar was thrilled that

our competitions give students an opportunity to showcase these skills.” Salazar adds that the competition has different categories. “The competitions at the state and regional levels are as follows - Employability Skill, Business Plan, Writing Skills, Public Speaking, Financial Literacy, and many others including the prestigious Outstanding Senior competition,” Salazar says. “The national competition opens up opportunities like the Knowledge Bowl and the Voting Delegacy.” Salazar also enjoyed meeting other people at the regional and state competitions. “There were really a lot of different participants who had so many skill sets in particular areas,” he says. “It was a great opportunity to learn more about business plans, public speaking and other areas. areas they knew a lot about. The JAG program is a wonderful opportunity for young people that I highly recommend.” Salazar says he had a very busy senior year. “I was involved with JAG and band throughout the whole school year,” he says. “This was my seventh year being involved in band and I have always really enjoyed it. I was also busy with drama in the fall, and the annual musical in the spring.” Salazar plans to attend Ball State University in the fall. “I want to pursue a degree in math education,” Salazar says. “It’s something I enjoy and I think it would really be a big opportunity for me.” Salazar’s mother Natalie is beaming over her son’s JAG accomplishments and future plans. “He is doing amazing things, and his dad and I are very proud of him,” she says. “He will continue to follow his dreams and go very far.”
