When Eric and Janet Barlow began planning their wedding, they had no idea that it would be such a challenge to find a good boarding facility for their dogs while they were on their honeymoon.

“We had an experience with a boarding facility,” Janet Barlow says. “When we came back they didn’t even know what dog we were coming to pick up. That set in my mind for a while. First and foremost it was a personalized need for the community.”

A year later in August of 1996, they opened up Midnight Sun Pet Resort. Since then the business has grown into a 46-suite getaway that can accommodate cats as well as dogs.

All the suites were designed with comfort in mind. The dog suites are 5’x20’, and have heated floors, air conditioning and a roof over the outdoor portion of the suite.

Three cat condos are in the reception area, and are just as luxurious as the facilities available to dogs.

“They are away from the dogs,” Barlow says.

“They have a big picture window to be able to watch the birds at the bird feeder, and cats can watch people come and go. It’s a calm area, but one where they’re going to have a lot of stimulation.”

Whether a pet needs to be boarded for a week or just needs a safe place to go for the day, the Barlows can put them up and take care of their needs, even if that includes complicated care like providing medicine or a special toy

Pet parents and animals alike know they will get good treatment at Midnight Sun Pet Resort.

“It’s kind of funny,” Barlow says. “Sometimes when pet parents come to get their dog, we’ll bring out the dog and it will be happy for a second, then will try repeatedly to go back to the kennel. That happens quite a bit.”

Each suite has an extra-large indoor and outdoor area available. The business can accommodate pet families by opening up a single suite to double the space, so dog siblings don’t have to be separated. For the dog who needs some extra-special TLC, the facility offers a penthouse deal. This area has furniture, rugs and a flatscreen TV for pampered pooches.

The resort has thousands of clients from Marshall and surrounding counties, as far away as Chicago, Wisconsin and Indianapolis. Many veterinarians in the surrounding area refer pets to the resort.

“We have a good relationship with the vets,” Barlow says.

Unlike many pet boarding facilities, Midnight Sun Pet Resort offers only private accommodations.

“We do not mingle the dogs in group play,” Barlow says. “People look for that because they don’t want their dog to necessarily be put in a group of dogs. For whatever reason their dog is timid, or they’re afraid their dog will be hurt by another dog.

What makes us different is that we can have that private care here.”

The Barlows also have a reputation for communicating with pet parents.

“As long as we have permission to be in contact with them, we do communicate regularly if we have any concerns or questions,” Barlow says. “People like knowing that they can trust us.”

Not only does the resort staff offer pets nice lodging, but they also have a range of grooming services available, from bathing and oatmeal treatments to nail buffing and hot oil treatments. All the services are available to help pets relax and feel at home, and are available whether a pet is spending the night or just coming in to be groomed.

Barlow always wanted to work with animals, and owning Midnight Sun Pet Resort is a dream come true.

“I’m kind of like a grandma,” she says. “I get to take care of, love on, spoil and really enjoy the different breeds. Customers are a second favorite - just all the different people and being able to help them and their pet family.”

There is something iconically American

about square dancing. With commands to do-si-do and promenade, circle left and circle right, and many more choreographed movements, square dancing is fun to watch.

Many folks might have even taken part in a square dance, but it’s a sure bet that not many have seen square dancing done by a fleet of tractors.

Lily Pearl’s Square Dancing Tractors is a local act that can be seen at events such as county fairs, hometown parades, Northern Indiana Power from the Past shows and other venues. They have traveled to Branson, Missouri, to Illinois, to Indianapolis for the State Fair, to Traverse City, Michigan, and to many other destinations. The group has been featured on RFD-TV and even in Reader’s Digest magazine.

Eight red, 80-year-old International Harvester Farmall H tractors, along with a single green one, perform tractor dance moves to music, navigated by their drivers, half of whom are dressed in peculiar costumes. These costumes are designed to amuse the crowd and can consist of evening gowns, summer dresses, wigs, and various anatomical enhancements to represent the female half of a square-dancing couple.

The Farmall H tractor was produced from 1939 to 1954.

Sometimes, he says, the reaction is “mixed.

It’s a novelty. It’s out of the norm for a lot of people.”

Curiosity draws many spectators to the shows, which are performed for 30 to 45 minutes. Usually there is more than one performance scheduled. Word of mouth often spreads and people come to see what the dancing tractors are all about.

“We even have our own local groupies,” Master says.

Lily Pearl was a name suggested by one of the founding members. In addition to the drivers, there is a square-dance caller accompanying the group.

The idea came about from a bet that it was possible to choreograph tractors into an intricate dance pattern. On the dance floor there are four sets of tractors side by side, and sometimes, as the choreography

dictates, they move in opposite directions.

Tires are touching and there are all kinds of scenarios that could go wrong.

Master says tires need to be the same size, gears must match, and the tractors must all start and end in the right position for each dance move. That takes planning and

Practices begin in February, especially if there is new choreography to learn. The group has done the same routine for about three years now, so currently there is not much learning needed to start the season.

Performance season is June 1 through October 31. After a year-long hiatus in 2020, the group resumed performing in 2021.

“We do have a lot of fun,” Master says.

Interested drivers are always welcome, too.

The group is based in Rochester, and is available for bookings. Performances are priced at $1,500 for one or two shows.

These plans were designed with standard construction practices in mind. Due to variations in state, local, and federal codes, revisions may be required to these plans. It takes many hours of practice to be ready to perform. The veteran drivers have done it enough so that practice sessions are not as frequent as they once were, but

practice is still necessary to fine-tune the movements ahead of show season. The group’s busiest time of year is summer, which coincides with county and state fairs and other tractor-friendly events.

The hope of educators is that the children entrusted in their care achieve success in life - however that is defined. At Eastern Pulaski Elementary School, that mission is a part of the everyday school routine.

“A successful school radiates positive energy and a culture of continued growth for both students and staff,” says Susie Schultz, instructional coach at Eastern Pulaski Elementary. “We recognize that success requires a growth mindset in all that we do.”

A quote from Jim Knight in Schultz’s email signature is a nod toward the vision of helping every student succeed: “When teachers stop learning, so do students.” It references her school’s commitment to creating an environment where students have what they need to succeed, starting with dedicated teachers.

Teachers and support staff in each grade level have time each day to collaborate,

and professional development is offered weekly. Teachers are also encouraged to highlight student success, Schultz says, with the Positive Referral program. Individual students are also honored with the ringing of a bell at the front office to celebrate

Eastern Pulaski Elementary opened in 1976. It combined the operations of Winamac Elementary and Star City Elementary. Five hundred students attend in kindergarten through fifth grade, supported

by 35 certified teachers including special education instructors and speech pathologists.

Every day students have access to learning in science, technology, engineering and math, as well as a curriculum that includes art, music, physical education, library time and digital literacy, Schultz says. A new program, Second Steps, was added this year, which starts the week off with a positive lesson that becomes the focus throughout the week.

“On our daily morning announcements, we are featuring a Career of the Day,” Schultz says. “This is a quick teaching tool which exposes our kids to future possibilities for their life.”

community, and created partnerships that address challenges their students’ families may be facing at home. Through community programs like Blessing Box, students have access to resources that the school cannot provide.

Community partnerships also provide opportunities for out-of-school activities like sports and other hobbies, such as those provided by Junior Achievement, 4-H, and other youth-oriented programs and organizations. Volunteers from the community are welcomed in for mentorship and guest readings, and Four County Counseling Center is assisting in improving the overall mental health of the students.

job,” Ken says. “I got acquainted with one of the partners at the law firm. I interviewed and they hired me.”

After moving his practice to Plymouth in 1972, Ken met and married the love of his life.

Adam has fond memories of growing up around the law firm, and the next generation is making similar memories.

“They like to get into the office supplies and color,” Adam says. “That’s what I used to do when I was a little kid. I had no idea what went on there, I just knew that everyone was nice and it was a fun place to go.”

As he grew and learned more about his dad’s work, and how much it benefited the community, he decided to make it his own vocation. In law school his dream was to join the Navy. Life took a different turn and he moved back to Plymouth, and has been working with his dad ever since.

“I always thought I was going to work in the military or get a job with the state department, or something that was more James Bond-y, but it didn’t pan out,” Adam says with a chuckle.

Instead, he has a drawer in his desk dedicated to notes he’s received from clients through the

years thanking him for his help.

“When I’m having a rough day, I haul those out and read them,” he says. “That’s what keeps me going.”

After Adam moved back to Plymouth, the father-son team opened their own practice in 2011. Since then the practice has grown,

a storefront that’s been open for 15 years and has a lengthy client list, or a three-generation farm that has acreage and machinery.

“We help people find tax-efficient and familyefficient ways of getting those assets from one generation to the next so you don’t have a major tax problem, and we try to minimize any family conflict that might be there,” Adam says.

The first time a client walks through the door, it’s for an initial consultation. Adam or Ken will work through what the assets are and who is in the family.

“Depending on what comes from that, we go down lines of questioning - we call it the rabbit hole - what their goals are, what their worries are, and then we try to figure out which of our tools will help them,” Adam says.

After that initial meeting they’ll draft a basic document. At the second appointment, they’ll look it over together to verify that it fits the client’s needs and desires. When the document is approved, the client signs it and will receive a copy. They will also receive a letter from Lukenbill & Lukenbill that summarizes the whole process, any problems that were resolved, and everything that was accomplished.

For wills in particular, Adam says the client should return and review the document at least once every three to six years.

“The law changes sometimes,” he explains.

“Once you sign them, most of the documents we do for people are good for some years, but it’s not bad for them to dust it off occasionally.”

At the end of the day, Ken and Adam find satisfaction in their customers’ peace of mind.

“A lot of them thank us for helping them through the difficult time,” Adam says.

“That’s the most common thing people say.

The one that really touches me is when they tell us that they’ve come to think of us as family or close friends.”

The 2022 event is scheduled for January 28 and 29 at the Michiana Event Center (MEC) in Shipshewana. On Friday doors open at 9 a.m. and close at 6 p.m., and on Saturday hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“It is more than a two-day event,” Miller explains. “It starts with setup on the 25th and ends on the 31st with teardown.

The action in between those dates is inspiring.”

In addition, the program features motivational speakers such as keynote speaker Conor Cunneen of Naperville, Illinois, who blends humor with his inspirational insights. Dr. Patrick Flynn of Green Bay, Wisconsin, will address issues around chronic health conditions.

topics on the health and wellness side.

More than $20,000 in door prizes will be given away to those attending this year’s expo. Prizes include furniture, tools, spa packages, cookware, gift cards and cash.

The auction starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with five sales rings operating, promising exciting auction action for buyers, sellers and spectators.

Miller says the expo and auction are family friendly. There is food service onsite, including free coffee for vendors and attendees.

The idea for the expo was based on similar events held in Michigan and Ohio,

by Miller’s own acknowledgement. He recognized the appeal of having the event in this region of the Midwest, and the

potential benefit to the community.

The first show of its kind in this region began in 2002 at the Clear Spring Produce Auction barn, organized by Robert Mishler and Willis Yoder as a way for people to sell unused or unneeded tools.

Miller joined the group in 2004 and the name changed to the Northern Indiana Tool Auction and Expo. It moved to the Shipshewana Auction barn.

“In 2005 the auction grew in leaps and bounds with 103 booths and 53 vendors,” Miller recalls. “In the Shipshewana building we were filled to capacity with 116 booths in 2006, and the auction grew to three rings.”

More space was needed and was eventually procured in 2010 in Howe, at a 150,000-square-foot building.

The move further expanded the event, accommodating a fourth auction sales ring and an indoor exhibit space. It was

“These people are a mixed group,” Miller says.

When the Midwest Health and Wellness Expo was added to the event in 2016, it began to draw more families, Miller says.

At that point there was something for everyone, not just those looking for tools and equipment.

I wash the dishes on my side that need to be done, and he helps me by washing his own. This is also a fun sensory activity that is productive and teaches independence and practical life skills. My nephew loves to do this as not only do we get to do something together, but we get to have fun with the bubbles. We call it our ‘Bubble Party”.

As a tip, I usually take a plastic or metal colander to help him ‘make’ more bubbles by agitating the water like a washer drum. I usually tell him when it’s time to wrap up that the water is ‘charging’ or ‘sleeping’ so our hands don’t get too pruney. This of course is after I have finished the dishes and have allowed him plenty of time to play. Then when we are all

done, there is usually some water on the floor, (it is likely to happen with a toddler doing dishes), and we mop it together. I model how to use the mop, and let him take it from there.

Byron Reichart, owner of Reichart Animal Damage Control in Bourbon, Indiana, loves what he does for a living.

“I really like talking to my customers and finding out what their specific needs are when they have to get rid of pesky animals like moles and muskrats,” Reichart says. “I like hearing a person’s voice over the phone, and finding out what their specific problem is. I can tell by the sound of a customer’s voice how big their animal pest problem is and what needs to be done.”

Reichart can catch everything from coyotes and raccoons to moles, muskrats and groundhogs.

“It’s really important to focus on the importance of trapping moles and muskrats as soon as the ice melts off the lakes and the ground thaws, to prevent property damage,” he says. “Raccoons can also really mess up a beautiful lawn. The muskrats, or as I like to call them, rats, can really cause a lot of damage to a beautiful lakefront home.”

Reichart notes that moles can also damage homes and businesses.

“The interesting thing about moles is that they stay below the frost line in the winter, but when the warm weather comes around they are ready to cause trouble,” he says. “Moles like to eat grubs and soil organisms. They really like the earthworms. They also like to build their tunnels, and undermine soil and harm roots.”

Moles also like to dig a series of living chambers and connect their tunnels, according to Reichart.

“They connect their tunnels to run just about 2’ below the surface,” he said.

“They push their excavated dirt to the surface in mole mounds. After that, they plug the holes. They can get a yard and home messed up quickly.”

Reichart says pesky animals such as moles should be taken care of quickly.

per acre,” Reichart says. “For every half acre it’s two moles, and one mole per quarter mile. It’s better to take on the problem as early as possible. Moles can also really travel around and travel very far. They like to migrate to lakefront properties where they can get into a house and still be near the water.”

Business is booming for Reichart’s company.

“I think I’m on the verge of something really big in this area,” Reichart says. “It’s been really busy for me because there are so many lakefront properties. The animals want to be around water. Moles can dig 100’ every 24 hours. I’ve done a lot of research and I set up a lot of traps. I have a great liquid mole bait, and a mole trap that I use to get the job done. I like chasing moles. It keeps me busy and I like that.”

Reichart is retired from his job as a dairy farm inspector for the state of Indiana. He worked for the state for 32 years.

“She’s a retired registered nurse,” he says.

“We met a long time ago when I was a private in the U.S. Army and she was a nurse. We get along just great.”

Reichart says he and Maureen have been married for 54 years.

“I work from 9 a.m. to noon every day,”

It was an experience I never expected to have, nor is it one I will ever forget. When I drove up to the hangar at the airport in Rochester, the Cessna 172 Skyhawk - and my imminent future - sat there as it was inspected for takeoff. Tim Peters, one of the flight instructors for Mentone Flying Club, introduced himself. He finished the plane inspection with ease, cracking good-natured jokes the whole time.

I, on the other hand, was a bundle of excitement, eager to see Lake Manitou from the air. Fortunately I didn’t have to wait long. Within minutes, Peters and I were taxiing to the runway. Almost before I knew it, we were circling the town, the buildings looking like toys below us.

Since it was incorporated in 1957, the Mentone Flying Club has offered an economical way for people in Fulton and surrounding counties to achieve their dream club’s president. “I was like, ‘Why not?’ I of becoming a private pilot. chased that dream and now here I am.”

As our discovery flight ended, my desire to take ground school was starting to take root.

“Don’t say you wish you did,” Szalay told me in the hanger. “Life is short. You should do the things that interest you, and that you enjoy and find meaning in. I did. I showed up at a class and I’ve never looked back.”

I thanked both men and left the hangar, my mind nearly bursting with euphoria.

As I passed the airport gate, the last of the sunlight winked out over the horizon.

Hopefully someday I will again fly into the sunset.

Erica Hemphill, co-owner of 10-56 Brewing in Knox, says she and her husband Mike were inspired to open the business through their passion for home brewing.

“After we fell in love with home brewing, we decided running a brewery would make sense for us as we neared the time for Mike to retire from the Indiana State Police,” Hemphill says. “I was deep into growing my newborn photography company, Love You Baby Photography, serving many local hospitals, and decided it was time to bring on more local photographers so I could focus on building 10-56 Brewing.”

It was a perfect time to put their plan into action.

“Brewing fit into our vision of owning businesses, as we wanted to create businesses that others could benefit from,” Hemphill says. “We gained the licenses to brew for distribution in 2014, and started distributing to restaurants and participating in all the brew fests our schedules would allow. We couldn’t have a taproom while Mike was still a state trooper, so we continued on the distribution

people are deeply bonded, and we don’t struggle to staff our brewery or to keep our employees. As 2022 approaches, we’re working on a new brewing space, built out in our current warehouse, to allow us to expand our brew system and our taproom. A new outdoor seating area will be added as well.”

“I love our Poppy’s SMOP,’” she says. “Poppy is my dad, and sausage, mushroom, onion and green peppers is his favorite combination.”

“We make 45 different recipes from pilsners to deep chocolate stouts,” Hemphill says. “We strive to maintain a style and color scale along our tap wall. We always have a cider guest tap, and one other guest tap we rotate to support local breweries. Our new taproom cooler has a wide variety of hard-to-find cans and bottles. We’re one of only a few places in northern Indiana carrying Hoosier products. All of our products except wine are available for dine-in or carry-out.”

“We have appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers, pizza and desserts,” Hemphill says. “Our peanut butter and jelly tots and buffalo tots are very popular, and our pizza has a cult following.

Our pizza dough is a family recipe, and made on-site daily. We use fresh ingredients, and pile them high before drowning it all in a pile of the best blends of cheeses. We let that cheese flow over and caramelize along the edges for a special treat you’d never expect.”

Hemphill has her own personal favorites.

The decision to undertake such an endeavor was not without controversy or conflict, but it was a logical one at the time as the escalating war in Vietnam had started to

change attitudes towards the military. CMA saw decreasing enrollment numbers, and the women’s movement was impacting a number of prominent schools to shift to coeducational models.

Culver, in fact, sought to handle its program a bit differently than most every other school in the nation by opting for a coordinate model, rather than coeducational proper. That is, the girls school was intentionally developed with a separate leadership structure, priorities, traditions and wardrobe, distinct from the longstanding military program that undergirds the boys school, CMA, to this day.

England and others involved in crafting what would become CGA emphasized the importance of different learning styles and environments for girls than boys. They modeled their program on the European prefect system, soon adopting iconic attributes like the CAG crest (its symbol and coat-of-arms) and Graduation Arch, the latter distinct from the hallowed graduation tradition of the CMA Iron Gate. Girls did not take part in the military exercises utilized in the boys system, and resided, then and now, in dorms rather than barracks.

By 1975 the girls school name had changed to its present-day Culver Girls Academy. Numbers continued to grow, as did opportunities for girls in academics, athletics, fine arts and extracurriculars, as well as in the area of horsemanship.

in academics and citizenship in order to participate), and by 1985 the Equestriennes joined the famous Culver Black Horse Troop in its trip to Washington, D.C., to take part in the presidential inaugural parade. That parade was cancelled due to inclement weather, but the Equestriennes rode proudly in the 1989 parade and, with the exception of the 1993 parade, in which Culver did not participate, have done so at each subsequent inaugural to the present day, in addition to appearances at events like the Indy 500 and World Equestrian Games.

In recent decades, CGA leadership has come into its own with gusto, as young women in the program have taken the lead in global endeavors like the Leadership Committee for Africa, and facilitated remarkable initiatives like Relay for Life of Culver. The latter has brought together area residents from a variety of walks of life and has raised more than $1 million

for the American Cancer Society. Through the years graduates have earned renown as athletes (including Olympians), businesswomen, entertainment figures and politicians, and also work in an array of

fields serving their communities, regions and more worldwide needs.

The remarkable growth of CGA was not lost on founding Dean Mai Fan England,

Steering the ship of CGA today is the first of its graduates to hold the office of Dean of Girls - Lynn Rasch, from the class of 1976 (and a key staff member at the school from the early 1980s). From that office she and the students, faculty and staff of Culver Academies are spending this school year looking both backward at the genesis and growth of the program, and forward to its next 50 years, with a celebration of the occasion culminating in May of 2022.

Rasch’s own words from 2015, when she took office as dean, may be as apt a summation of the past, present and future of the landmark program as any: “There

Second, they wanted to give the community a different kind of eating experience.

When the Gunters decided to expand their business holdings to include a bar and patio, they attacked the project with the same perspective. They purchased a downtown storefront that desperately needed renovation, and planned to put in an eatery that would accent the other options in town.

Initially the bar was Dwight’s special project. One day after they purchased the building, they were discussing - and disagreeing on - the menu.

“He was like, ‘You know what? It’s my bar and I’m going to do it the way I want it. It will be a Ruth-less bar,’” Gunter says. “I said, ‘Until 10:00 at night, then I go in.’”

By the time the argument became a fond memory, Ruthless had stuck as a good name for the bar. Even after Dwight passed away in August of 2019, Gunter decided to keep the name as it was.

“He lived to see that end result of a finished job. He would be so happy right now and so pleased with the way it ended up.”
