Georgette Samuelson always wanted to be a veterinarian. Since growing up as a young girl on Staten Island, she knew that working to help animals was what she wanted to do with her life. She achieved her goal 46 years ago and has been helping animals ever since.

While growing up, Samuelson liked to spend time at the nearby zoo, where she met the female veterinarian. The woman became a mentor for her, and she inspired Dr. Samuelson to work hard to achieve her dreams, no matter who tried to stand in her way.

“She held classes every Saturday [at the zoo] there, and her mentorship really drove me

on, the fact that she was a woman in a man’s world. I was really fascinated,” Samuelson says.

In 1973, Georgette saw her dream come true, earning her degree as a veterinarian. Achieving the goal did not come without its challenges, though.

Entering the field in the early 1970s, she was met with stiff opposition from the great number of males in the field.

Despite the naysayers, Dr. Samuelson continued to do what she loved.

“I was a woman. They didn’t like women in [the profession] back then,” she says. “I just didn’t think about it and kept working.”

After growing up in New York, Samuelson became ready to move out and see someplace new. She was looking for somewhere less populated, and Indiana seemed to be the perfect fit. She moved to the Plymouth area and fell in love with the community. “[There were] too many people in New York,” she says. “I wanted to move to where there weren’t as many people.”

She started working in Plymouth at the Parrot Vet Clinic, and less than a decade after earning her degree as a veterinarian, Samuelson became her own boss, taking over a family member’s practice in 1982. Originally owned by her husband’s uncle, the practice opened in the late 1950s. In the early 1980s, however, he started thinking about retiring. In 1982, he approached Dr. Samuelson and her husband about purchasing the business.

“He was ready to retire, and he asked if we wanted to buy the practice from him, so I took over in 1982,” she says.

Today, her practice has grown, garnering a great response from the community.

The Culver Animal Hospital prides itself on being there to help and serve animals.

They are currently only accepting cats and dogs as patients, but they also work with a wildlife rehabilitator to help those animals they cannot accept.

Life is sweet for Jenny Knebel and her daughter Sallie, owners of Sallie’s by the Shore Ice Cream. Since opening in 2015 in Rochester, they have quickly gained popularity for their all-natural ice cream,

unique flavors, and vintage atmosphere, expanding now to four different locations.

Though Jenny and Sallie run it today, Jenny admits that owning an ice cream company was originally a dream of her husband.

“My husband’s family had been in the dairy

business for a couple generations at least, and it was kind of always a dream of my husbands to make ice cream,” Jenny says.

His goal began coming to fruition during a blizzard a few years ago. As a high school teacher, Jenny was out of school because of the weather, and so she and her husband

started watching videos on YouTube to learn how to make ice cream. Once it was decided that they would open a business, Jenny and Sallie traveled down to Florida to take classes and learn how to make the best ice cream. Initially planning to open in 2016, an instructor encouraged them to open shop sooner, saying that they were ready.

“[We] came back and got to it,” Jenny says, laughing. “I think we had eight or nine recipes the first summer, and we’re up to over 30 different flavors at this point.”

Guests are invited to try all sorts of flavors, ranging from the classic Oreo to fruity flavors like Sweet Georgia Peach and Key Lime Pie. Last year, they even featured an Indiana Sweet Corn flavor, with real corn, real butter, and real salt. Their newest flavor is Black Raspberry Chocolate.

Creating flavors with all real ingredients is a huge point of pride for Jenny and Sallie.

“We don’t use any artificial syrups or preservatives. For instance, the Key Lime Pie, everything that goes into a Key Lime Pie goes into the ice cream.

We’re very close to gelato, and it’s the premium ingredients that put us over the top,” Jenny says. “We don’t take those shortcuts [that most other companies do]. We want the flavor to come through.”

Besides the great ice cream, people visit Sallie’s for the experience — with popup campers in Culver and Rochester, guests are transported back to the 1940s and 1950s.

“It’s neat to see the vintage pieces and appliances. Everything stimulates conversation between the older generation and the younger generation,” Jenny says. “The girls are more like actresses in a play. They all have the apron on and the polka dot headbands. So from beginning to end, they’re going to experience something that they won’t experience at any other ice cream shop.”

You can visit Sallie’s by the Shore at four different locations in Rochester, Winamac, and two Culver locations.

The pop-up camper locations in Rochester and Culver are only open until shortly after Labor Day. For information regarding the various hours for different locations, you can visit them on Facebook under “Sallie’s by the Shore.”

Opening Silver Leaf Florist and Boutique in May 2018 was the result of owner Jeanne Thompson following her heart and returning to her roots. The shop, located at 217 E. Culver Road in Knox, is known for its innovative arrangements and gifts, as well as its warm and welcoming staff. Recently voted Favorite Florist in the Leader & Review publishing company’s 2019 Best of Starke County, it is apparent that area residents appreciate and enjoy the florist and boutique combination.

“I grew up on a farm in the area and I’ve always been interested in flowers. My mom passed on when I was 12, so I was very close to my dad — he was my best friend. He loved gardening and some of my happiest memories are of my dad teaching me about flowers and their care,” Thompson says. “After I grew up, I lived in Carmel and traveled a lot with my job at L’Oreal Cosmetics. In 2004, since my father’s health began to fail, I returned to Knox. After he passed on, I got the idea of opening the store as a homage to him.”

A lot of the shop’s business is devoted to weddings and funerals, but serving walk-in business is something Thompson relishes. She also works with fundraising and schools. Tuxedo rental is an especially welcomed service, especially around prom season.

Recently, Thompson donated 150 colorful corsages to the Fifth Annual Special Needs Prom. It was the first time it was hosted by Knox High School, which enabled Thompson and

her staff to contribute to putting smiles on the attendee’s faces.

“It’s either feast or famine in this industry. It’s just the way it is. You have to be there when they need you,” Thompson says. “You don’t know when funerals are going to happen.”

When asked to recount a few of her recent experiences, Thompson says, “I had to open the store up and come in and assemble flowers this past July Fourth. A family needed them quickly for a funeral. I did it, but I can honestly say that anyone on staff would have done it if I asked them to — they are that devoted.”

Thompson enjoys interacting with the community via the Silver Leaf Florist and Boutique’s Facebook page.

She and her staff post some of their latest creations and fun seasonal gifts.

Promotions are also offered which may involve free cookies or complimentary bouquets of flowers.

“There is no money in the florist business, I’m doing this because I love it.

I do it from my heart. My staff is totally dedicated to making it the best. They put their whole heart and soul into it every day.”

Most high school athletic coaches would likely be happy with even a single regional or state title in the course of their career. In just his second year as Culver Academies Rowing head coach, Nathan Walker took his program to the national stage, securing not one, but two Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) national championships.

After strong performances at the Midwest Scholastic Championships on May 11 and

12, the men’s junior 4+ team and men’s varsity 4+ team both qualified for nationals in Nashport, Ohio, on Dillon Lake later that month.

As head of Culver’s rowing program and coach of the varsity men’s team, Walker says the men’s squad was showing plenty of promise back in the fall racing season, as well as through winter training sessions in preparation for spring.

“We have fall and spring racing seasons, and back in the fall when the novice rowers come up to varsity with us, I knew we

had some good potential and good drive in many of our athletes to do well,” says Walker, who began rowing while attending Purdue University and has since coached at the high school, college and adult levels.

“That potential really started to become clear in the winter - rowing in the midwest and northeast where it’s cold for so long, you have to grind it out with a long-term vision of what you want to achieve,” he adds. “You have to just put your head down and work, work, work. I saw the guys consistently doing that and getting faster, fitter and better.”

The two teams that qualified for the SRAA championships included Brendan Jarmusz, Corbin Steck, Jason Dilena, Diego Gordon and Benjamin Brummel for the men’s junior 4+ team, as well as Noah Tan, Savas Koutsouras, Henry Stewart, Jacob Page and Charles Jones for the men’s varsity 4+ team.

“We had a pretty young group — three of the 10 guys who went had been there the previous year in the junior 4+ but everybody else had been on the novice team,” Walker explains. “Their rowing machine times had been good, but they didn’t really know what to expect and it’s so different when you’re actually lining up against people from Florida, California and Boston.”

After a few early snags during the trip to Ohio for nationals, including a flat tire en route and inclement weather that forced cancellation of all practices on the day before competition, both teams won their initial heats comfortably and pulled off semifinal victories in improved weather.

The varsity men clinched their finals victory by 2.7 seconds over Pine Crest School from Florida, while the junior squad beat out Pennsylvania-based Haverford School by 2.3 seconds for first place honors.

“I knew the guys could do it, but with a group of mostly younger guys who don’t have as much time in the water as many of the other teams from the coasts, and when the chips are on the table and the nerves are flaring, you have to galvanize together as a crew and have confidence,” Walker says.

“My heart just swelled up seeing them come together and pull it off.”

Jones, a senior, says it was the team’s focus on collective rather than individual achievements that propelled them to a successful season.

A Fine Eatery “Coach says practice is like putting pennies in the bank and then you cash them out during the race,” he says.

“We worked hard all the way through last season and even went to a training camp in Florida for a week. It paid off, and it showed us how the sport is based on hard work.”

Walker says his favorite moment of the season came moments after the varsity men finished their victorious race at nationals and made their way to the shore.

“Their junior teammates had just won earlier, and they came out and tackled them and they all splashed around,” he says. “It was smiles from everybody, and it was this perfect moment you have so rarely in life where everything comes together.”

A few of the winning team members are taking their rowing careers beyond Culver. Stewart will row for Stanford University this fall, and Koutsouras joined the U-19 U.S. national rowing team this summer. Stewart, Koutsouras and Jones now hold the first, third and fifth fastest 2,000-meter rowing times in Culver history.

Renee Baczynski and her husband frequented the Bass Lake area for years prior to moving there and opening the award-winning JK Deli in Monterey 12 years ago.

As a Poland native, some people are confused when they stop into the deli and hear Renee’s accent. Customers often get curious and begin to ask questions — such as how did she wind up in a small town in Indiana? The story is simple, and one that Renee loves sharing with customers.

“I was born in Poland, but my grandma and great-grandma were born in [the] United States and they moved back to Poland. So, I was born there, and when I was 12, we moved back,” she says.

Renee lived in Chicago for more than 20 years after immigrating, running her own daycare center there. Throughout the years, she and her husband traveled with their children to Bass Lake to go camping. As they visited more and more, they began to love it. After their sons grew up and moved out on their own, the couple decided to move down to the place they had enjoyed on vacations so often.

“We kept passing by this place and thinking it would be nice to own it,” Renee says. “And two weeks later we passed by, and it was for sale, so that’s how we wound up getting the place.”

While they made some renovations to the attached gas station, the real changes came inside. They transformed the store into a “mini Chicago.” The menu featured fewer sandwiches and more traditional Polish dishes. Today, visitors have to make the tough decision of what to try: there are so many options, and they all are delectable.

pierogi, Polish sausage, Polish burgers,” Renee says. “We have homemade jerky, and Kiszka is really really popular.”

Pierogi are pockets of dough stuffed with a variety of things: cheese, meat, potatoes, sauerkraut, mushroom or fruit.

They are then fried or boiled before serving. Kiszka is a blood sausage.

In addition to the atypical menu, the JK Deli stands out for its dedication to freshness. They choose the highest quality ingredients, including sausage that is brought in from Chicago twice a week.

The combination of interesting food, freshness, and the dedication to service all helped the JK Deli win the title of Best Deli in Starke County.

Customer service is really what it’s all about for Renee. The deli gives her a place to meet people and talk about different cultures —she gets to speak in Polish with some customers, and she works to teach people the language.

“Usually there are a lot of second- or third-generation Polish people, and they ask me how to say things in Polish, or I had a guy who is 90 years old, and he hasn’t spoken Polish in 50 years, and he started crying when he heard us speaking it,” Renee says.

THE PERFECT CAST Local Fly Fishing Expert Offers Advice For Aspiring Anglers Carter also builds fishing rods.

Dennis Carter, a fly fishing expert, loves sharing his enthusiasm for the activity.

“I have been fly fishing for 25 years,” Carter says. “I have always loved to fish, and one day someone I worked with mentioned fly fishing and asked me if I would like to try it. I knew nothing about it at the time but had always been fascinated in watching someone cast a line so far and how some people were so graceful in how they did it.”

Carter had always been a spin cast or bait casting fisherman before trying fly fishing and had never even held a fly rod in his hand. Today, he says fly fishing has brought him a lot of happiness.

“I think that initially it was the joy it has brought into my life, the peace and serenity I received from it,” he says. “And now I believe that I love it for the way I see others who learn to appreciate those same things and how excited they are as they get better and better at their fly casting.”

“I have several suppliers that I use in building custom graphite and fiberglass fly rods,” Carter says. “I can also restore old rods, including old split cane or bamboo fly rods, provided they are not too badly damaged.”

Carter begins the process when he receives all the items needed to build the fly rod, the rod, cork handle, reel seat and cap, the guides, hook keeper and tip top.

“I am a bit of a perfectionist, and building a fly rod requires, patience and a determination to build what I like to call the ‘perfect rod,’” he says. “The nice thing about building a custom fly rod for someone is giving them the options of deciding exactly what they want, what color blank to use, which kind and color of thread. All rods are tested by casting them before I give them to a customer.”

Carter also offers private lessons to individuals and small groups.

“I can offer lessons in fly fishing to anyone who wishes to learn about it,” he says.

Carter started giving lessons because every time he went fly fishing, he would have someone watch him casting for a while, and then approach him and say, “Hey Mister, would you teach me to do that?”

Carter gives lessons in fly fishing and fly casting to a host of individuals and organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club, the Life Enrichment Center, the Plymouth Park Department and more.

“I enjoy teaching, watching and listening to people as they ask questions and then progress in their quest of the perfect cast,” Carter says. “Casting a fly rod properly is the essence of good fly fishing. If you cannot cast well, you will never reach the fish and at that point you are not even in the game.”

Carter noted that a person needs to first know that fly fishing is different from bait or the spin casting way of fishing.

“In bait and spin casting, it is the bobber, weight and bait that carry the lure to the fish,” Carter says. “In fly fishing, it is the fly line that carries the fly or lure to the fish.

successful, can be taught easily. The real meat of fly fishing is fly casting and performing each cast well.”

Carter added that is not easy for the vast majority of people.

“It requires learning a new way to cast, and then when students learn the proper fly casting techniques, then it is a lot of practice,” Carter says. “It would seem as if none of us start out fly casting. The vast majority of us learn to fish using a bait casting or spinning rod and reel.”

Carter has good advice on how to fly fish successfully.

“First off, you must know what kind of fish you are looking to catch, and what kind of food that fish prefers,” Carter says. “So use a fly that mimics what that fish may eat. For instance, a crappie will usually take a small minnow as food, so use a fly that looks like a small minnow that is small enough for a crappie to get into its mouth.”

Carter also advises people to not be afraid to try different fly colors.

“Spiders, beetles and other insects are not all white or black, and scientists who study fish say that some species can actually see different forms of the colors orange, pink and purple,” Carter says. “If you tie flies, experiment with learning and tying different forms of flies. If you purchase flies, ask others who fly fish what they have been successful with.”

Carmen Gallegos, owner of La Parilla Caliente Mexican Restaurant, 119 W. Plymouth Street, Bremen, says the Bremen community has been overwhelmingly positive in their support of the family restaurant.

“We do a lot of catering, and it has really been successful with a lot of the people in Bremen,” Gallegos says. “We have been a huge hit at weddings, office parties, family parties and birthdays. We get a lot of calls to take our food to people who have catered with us before. It’s nice when people in the Bremen community say good things about us and recommend us to their friends. The people of Bremen have been great to us, and we are extremely grateful.”

The great food at La Parilla Caliente has been a major reason for the restaurant’s success. Positive word-of-mouth has made the restaurant prosper. Regulars already have their favorite choices.

The catering menu has a wide variety of different authentic Mexican platters. The restaurant’s taco bar has also been highly popular.

Gallegos noted that La Parilla Caliente’s margaritas are huge: 26 ounces for only $7.99.

“People from the Bremen schools have really been great, Gallegos says. “They have done a lot of fundraising events with us and have been very supportive. We are always getting customers from all of the different schools. The families, the teachers and the kids from the schools really give us a lot of business and have helped us succeed.”

“Some of the customer favorites have been our cheese dip,” Gallegos says. “We have a lot of people order that. We also have a lot of customers who love our fajitas and margaritas. They have been highly popular.”

She loves their hand-made gorditas, which are similar to pita pockets, but much thicker.

“We are really a family-related restaurant and have been told by a lot of parents that they really enjoy coming here with their kids to enjoy a fresh meal,” Gallegos says. “It’s a great place to relax and have fun. We have great service, and everyone here is very friendly.”

Gallegos noted that everything prepared at La Parilla Caliente is made from scratch.

“Every meal is authentic,” Gallegos says.

“We don’t use canned beans. People love our authentic tortas, tacos, salsa and chori pollo.”

La Parilla Caliente also serves a delicious three taco meal, as well as great tostadas, fried chimichangas and Mexican soups, among many other meal choices.

The seafood dinners, which include shrimp Chimichangas and grilled tilapia, among others, are also delicious. Salad options include a grilled chicken salad, grilled steak salad, taco salad and fajita salad.

The tortas (Mexican sandwiches) are all made with sour cream, avocado, lettuce, tomato and beans). They come with a choice of steak, pork and more.

Family Business Gallegos says La Parilla Caliente is truly a family business.

“We opened in September, 2015,” Gallegos says. “My dad owned this building for 18 years. Different businesses rented the place over the years.”

The meal was held in the Bremen High School Cafeteria. The meal included chicken, fajitas, rice, chips and salsa. La Parilla Caliente donated 20% of their profits to the police fund.

La Parilla Caliente also participated in St. Matthew Cathedral’s Holiday Craft Bazaar. The restaurant staff made chicken fajitas, rice, chips, salsa and tamales. Mexican flavored pop was also served. La Parilla Caliente donated a percentage of its sales back to St.Matthew’s.

“It feels great to help our community and do what we can to help other people,” Gallegos says. “I can’t say enough about how wonderful people in Bremen are. This is a great place to live.”

Most teenagers aren’t awarded titles ranking them as number one in the state or in the Midwest, but Kambri Scott, of Walkerton, isn’t like most teenagers. A baton twirler by nature, Kambri picked up the sport when she was just three years old.

“I am a fourth-generation twirler, so it was just in my blood to start,” she says. “On my third birthday, I asked my aunt if I could start twirling.”

Now, 12 years later, Kambri is still at it.

She has been traveling the country with two different competition teams for the last decade, earning titles left and right.

Currently, she holds the titles of Junior Miss Majorette for Strut and Solo in the State of Indiana. In 2018, she was the reigning

Junior Miss Majorette of Indiana and the Midwest. She recently competed in two National competitions, one in Ohio for the group Twirling Unlimited (TU), and then the National Baton Twirling Association (NBTA) in South Bend. She also competed in the World Qualifying competition for the American Youth On Parade (AYOP) competition in late July.

Each competition consists of multiple events, and Kambri competes in three of them: strut, solo and modeling. Each event focuses on a different aspect of twirling. For the strut competition, participants must exhibit superior flexibility and jumps.

“You have a minute and 30 seconds to two minutes to show the judge how flexible and how great you can stand and do your jumps.

You have an x-shaped pattern that you have to do,” she explains.

For the second portion, solo, participants try to show off their twirling abilities.

Kambri explains it as “how many spins you can do or how many twirls.” The final competition is modeling. For modeling, participants must complete a walk on stage, and then they go into an interview with a judge. Competitors are expected to speak eloquently, constructing good, logical answers.

Kambri loves her competitions for more than just winning, though. The team aspect and the educational aspect are both important to her.

“I also love meeting girls from all around the country, at different competitions, and we all stay in contact. I love having a family behind me, even if it’s not my true family, it’s my team,” she says.

The educational part of twirling teaches her a lot, too. From time management to proper speaking to accepting losses, Kambri recognizes the impact that the sport has had on her.

“[Twirling] has taught me to organize my time because I get up and practice at 6 am every morning because I have school and other activities, so that’s the only time to do it,” she says. “[I love] the things that it teaches me, for modeling we have to go to a judge and actually sit down and have a conversation, and so we have to answer properly.”

Kambri cites handling criticism and discipline as another important impact of twirling. Receiving feedback from coaches teaches her how to not only have the discipline to adjust what she is doing, but it teaches her how to take the feedback without getting upset. She has to exercise that discipline when she doesn’t achieve a goal she has.

“It has impacted me on if I lose or if I don’t get what I aimed for, that that’s okay and there’s always next time,” she says.

Twirling is absolutely something Kambri plans on keeping up in her future. She wants to continue throughout high school as the featured twirler at football and basketball games.

After that, she plans on going out to Iowa to become a featured twirler there.

Competitions are certainly staying in her future, too.

“I plan to keep competitively competing, and I plan to try and keep both my titles for Junior Strut and Solo Champion,” she says.

Kambri wants people to know that twirling is not all just looking pretty — it is hard work. Between an intensive practice schedule, the physical toll it takes is a big one.

“I want everyone to know that baton is not just about looking pretty. I have gotten so many bruises. I think it’s more of a contact sport than football, personally,” she says, laughing.

To their loyal clientele, both professional and amateur, New Kitchen Store is the place to go for anything from superior pots and pans to specialty kitchen items and spices from literally all over the world. To locals, it’s where the Walkerton Farmer’s Market is held every Thursday. To amateur cooks and bakers in a three-state area, New Kitchen Store is the place that sponsors those incredible cooking classes once a month.

But to owners, Phyllis and Chuck Wille, it’s been a way to demonstrate a love for their community and to help instill in that community a desire to understand food: where it comes from and the importance of consuming high-quality nutrition from freetrade sources.

More than 30 years ago, though, healthy living wasn’t exactly at the forefront of their minds. Instead, their attention was on selling antiques.

“I started finding out that foods were made different,” Phyllis says. “So in doing that, we needed the healthier choices.”

Thanks to their customers’ feedback, they broadened their product line to include gourmet foods within weeks of opening their doors. Later, they also began selling high-end coffees, teas, spices and oils, taking pains to make sure that all their products come from free-trade sources. All the while, the Willes strove to share with their customers everything they’d learned over the years about health-conscious quality food and kitchenware.

In time, that developed into offering reasonably-priced cooking classes. Every month, Chef Brad Hinsley, who teaches at the culinary school at Robert Morris University in Chicago, leads the classes.

First he demonstrates the procedures for that night’s menu then the students have an opportunity to make — and eat — the dishes. The evening is full of laughter and

conversation as they enjoy the fare, which can be anything from grilling (an annual favorite) to sushi to any number of authentic ethnic cuisines.

Their customers loved what the Willes offered and told their friends, who also fell in love and told their friends. Within six years,

Kitchen Store had outgrown its location and moved to a new location just north of Walkerton on Rt. 23. The move came with a name change: New Kitchen Store. And of course, the growth hasn’t stopped.

Other than that, they plan on doing what they already do: offering their community the best of kitchenware, foodstuff and service.

“Being lake-bred and having a lake close to us, we’re creating a service there, too, just having products they can use, not only on material that’s healthy to use but also a convenience for people,” Phyllis adds.

The annual Lake Maxinkuckee Film Festival in Culver continues to prove that a small group of concerned citizens can change people’s lives.

The event started 12 years ago after community leaders noticed the struggles that many families faced in the winter months: they couldn’t afford to pay their heating bills and they didn’t have enough to pay for winter gear for their children. Kids were coming to school cold, without proper clothing to protect them from the snow.

Community members started the Gift of Warmth. The group works to collect money and clothing for local families that grapple with the extra financial burdens that come with wintertime. When the group first started thinking about how to raise awareness for their cause, someone suggested a film festival — show a movie,

have a picnic and ask attendees to bring something to donate as admission. The idea caught on, and it’s continued to be a community staple over a decade later.

This year’s festival will once again take place on Friday and Saturday of Labor Day weekend in Culver Park. Friday night is a special dinner for large donors, while Saturday is for the public. Entertainment will begin at 6:00 p.m. with musical guests Acoustically Speaking and the North American Brass Company.

“[Acoustically Speaking] is a group of three or four people, and they’ve got acoustic guitars and drums. The North American Brass Company is old-timey kind of – you hear this music going on like in the Music Man,” Paula Sturman says, festival cochair. “Each of them usually plays about 45 minutes each.”

The movie this year is the 1985 classic, “Back to the Future.” Guests of the film

festival will also be treated to a picnic.

“Saturday night of the festival starts at about 6 in Culver Town Park, and we start with a picnic with hot dogs, pulled pork, popcorn, chips, root beer floats, and ice cream,” Sturman says. “The only price of admission is an article of warm clothing.”

This year, though, school officials have asked that attendees please bring a pair of new or lightly worn sneakers or new socks.

While the coats and other warm clothing will be used, schools are seeing more and more students with holes in their shoes or inadequate footwear in the winter and throughout the year.

“It’s not that they won’t use coats, but the school officials have said ‘Boy, we see the kids walking around in the winter with shoes with holes in them,’” Sturman says.

“All the school officials have said that they need new or lightly worn clean sneakers or a package of socks.”

While the movie and picnic are a great time, Sturman is involved with Gift of Warmth for more than the film festival — seeing the impact of the organization on children throughout the year is more rewarding than anything else. The effect on the community keeps her coming back.

“I still get chills because when a high school student that looks at you and smiles with tears in his eyes, saying ‘This is the best thing I’ve ever had,’ it’s significant to me,” she says.

Its impact was most visible this past January when the group was able to give every single student in the Culver Community Schools a hoodie. With a fantastic group of volunteers, contributors, and a sponsor from Under Armour, they were able to give out 900 hoodies to local students. The group acknowledges that they would not be able to accomplish nearly as much without the various generous contributions from the community.

“The impact of the Gift of Warmth is that no child should ever worry about being warm or coming home to a cold house. We’re successful and have grown because of our sponsors and our volunteers,” Sturman says.

The Lake Maxinkuckee Film Festival is on Saturday, August 31, but donations are accepted throughout the year. School officials are looking for new or lightly-worn sneakers and new socks. Their website is currently being updated, but you can visit them online at lakemaxfilmfestival.com.

They made the wise decision to make their business mobile.

The Egolf brothers are currently taking their Leg Shakers BBQ out to set up in spots locally to sell to the public.

“It was a big shock to us,” Jonny says. “We first set up on the side on U.S. 421, near San Pierre, Indiana, and we honestly didn’t know what was going to happen. We made about 100 pounds of meat, and 50 pounds in sides.”

After about four hours, they were sold out.

“We couldn’t believe it,” Jonny says. “On the first day, we sold all of our food, and

got to serve some really great people.

On the second set up, we found a great location at the Oak View Motel in North Judson, Indiana. That’s when the community really got excited because it was something new and different to eat around that area. We made even more food and sold out in two and a half hours.”

Jonny adds that customers have responded to the unusual setup.

Jonny says customers really love the pulled pork brisket sandwiches, topped with grilled onions and their sweet homemade BBQ sauce called “Beer’d Sauce.”

“It seems to be the most popular,” Jonny says. “We also got a lot of great feedback on our smoked bacon mac and cheese, and our seasoned potatoes.

The smoked Gouda and Munster cheese have also been popular.”

Dan says his favorite is their “candy bacon, smoked Gouda cheese, pulled pork sandwich, smoked turkey, seasoned potatoes and smoked bacon mac and cheese.”

“We also do BBQ chicken and ribs,” Jonny says. “There is some stuff we don’t always have readily available unless it is requested. This includes our smoked turkey, orange-glazed ham, beef jerky, jerk chicken and our homemade chili. We do have a catering menu on our website at legshakersbbq.com that offers a larger menu of items that are not normally sold out of the trailer.”

Since 2006, Solar Energy Systems has been providing solar energy systems and installations to the northern Indiana community. Family-owned, their goal is to offer professional, courteous service to each customer. It has built up 13 years of knowledge and expertise while serving area businesses, farms, homes, and RVs. Simply put, solar energy is electric power that is generated when panels comprised of photovoltaic cells are installed on the roof of a building. When exposed to sunlight, the solar panels create an electric charge which is then collected and sent to an inverter. From there, the electricity is sent to an electric meter and on to a home or building. If a customer is off-grid, the electric charge is sent from the panels to a battery system and onto their inverter, which provides power to their home or designated structure.

When asked why people should care about solar energy and how it can benefit them, Andrew Staffelbach, head of marketing, says, “Clean energy is something everyone should care about. Where you’re getting your power, how much you’re using, and the rising cost of it are all reasons why people need to care. There are so many benefits — financial and environmental are the ones our customers care about the most.”

A lot of its customers are on a budget, so when utility prices are unpredictable, it can be hard for people to adjust their budgets.

“By installing solar, they can confidently know what to expect every month when they get their bill,” Staffelbach says. “For large companies or even schools who use a lot of energy, their saving in 30 years makes it an easy decision to install it. A small upfront investment now will lead to huge savings down the road.”

It is Solar Energy System’s goal to educate and facilitate their patrons’ experience every phase of the process.

The first step is a free on-site visit to determine what system would be best to fit the unique needs of the customer.

Once a contract is signed, Solar Energy Systems secures the correct permits needed. After installation, customers have the option of choosing online monitoring and warranties.

Staffelbach says, “We offer turnkey solar systems. We design the systems in house, have our own installers, and handle all utility and county requirements. Our sales representatives will come to your house or business, take the time to sit down with and discuss your needs.

Every system is custom and designed around what our customers need now and in the future.”

The initial investment in a system costs between $14,000 and $25,000 but with tax incentives, that can be lowered to $9,800 to $17,500.

Any extra electricity generated by the panels that a customer does not use is sent to the electric grid, usually generating a credit with the electric utility.

As for the future of Solar Energy Systems, Staffelbach says, “We plan on continuing educating our community about the numerous benefits about solar. In the past few years, solar of RV’s has really grown, so hopefully, we can continue to grow in that area too.”

Leroy Hochstetler first opened the Rentown Country Store in Bremen in 1987 with one shelf of product. He ran it until 2010, when his son, Dennis, took over. Today, Dennis runs the store with his wife. In 2015, the decision was made to expand the store across the street to facilitate the number of people coming to visit the store.

“We added on four times until the county said we can’t add on anymore,” Dennis explains. “[In 2015], we built the new store where it is now, and we’ve just been going from there.”

The rich family history stretches back before the store opened, with Dennis’ grandfather and his friend coining the name “Rentown” in the 1950s and 60s.

The men were well-known for being involved in the community after their retirement, spending time out and around the town.

“In the Pennsylvania Dutch language, ‘rum-renna’ means ‘getting about,’” Dennis says. “These two neighbor guys were always going here and there, and they said if we don’t watch us, people are going to call us Rentown.”

Today, the store is known as a magnificent hub for fresh produce, deli meats and cheeses. Dennis and his wife prioritize supporting local farmers and selling it in their shop.

Currently, they are selling product from four growers within a 10-mile radius. Their main focus, though, is their meats and cheeses.

“Four years ago, I went through my invoices and added up all the cheese we sold, and it was a little more than two tons of cheese,” he says. “We always try to keep the freshest cheese in Northern Indiana and the lowest price.”

They also value giving back to their community. Once a year, they host Rentown Old Fashion Days. This year, it will take place on September 6 and 7. This family-friendly event not only brings people to the area, but it acts as a fundraiser for Rolling Meadows, the local parochial school.

“We have train rides for the kids, a petting zoo, pony rides, there’s a steam show, and of course lots and lots of food,” Dennis says. “That is just around the corner from the store, on Birch Road. We have more than 50 antique vendors there. Painting, popcorn, hamburgers, brats, we make all that stuff. There’ll just be a lot of fun for everybody.”

On Friday night, the festivities begin at 3 pm and run until dark. On Saturday, folks are welcome from 9 am until 3 pm. All proceeds from the event will go directly to funding the school.

If you’re itching for more after the Old Fashion Days, make sure to come back on November 9 for their Super Saturday. The store, along with 11 other businesses, will slash prices for one day in preparation for the holiday season. There will also be a $500 cash giveaway, too.
