“A lot of people focus on the number on the scale, but that number doesn’t always mean health,” she says. “Achieving a goal weight doesn’t make us healthy if we aren’t eating balanced meals with foods rich in nutritional value.”

Quick-fix fad diets frequently result in substantial weight loss but are hard to maintain and end up with rebound weight gain that can be even more than the person lost in the first place.

“I help my clients focus on behavioral changes with slow and steady nutrition, activity and lifestyle improvements that transform health goals into healthy habits.”

DITCH THE DIET CULTIVATE YOUR PLATE FOUNDER KATE BOSTON OFFERS NUTRITION COACHING & EDUCATION ON HEALTHY EATING

“Cultivate Your Plate is founded on attainable and sustainable wellness,” says Boston, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.

Growing up in Philadelphia, Boston was inspired to study nutrition and dietetics at West Chester University after seeing first-hand how diet can affect someone’s life — for better or worse. Her grandfather had kidney disease and passed away when Boston was in second grade, her grandmother passed away due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease, and her younger brother, Kevin was born with spina bifida.

“I work hard to shift focus away from the scale and diet mentality and toward the countless benefits of a balanced meal plan, which has plenty of room for everyone’s favorite foods,” she says.

Committing to following a healthy, well-balanced diet may seem like an insurmountable change for some, but Kate Boston of Cultivate Your Plate has dedicated her career to helping people in their quest to lead healthier lives.

Boston’s approach results in long-term wellness that promotes health and nourishment rather than obsessing over a goal weight.

“I’ve seen a lot of death and disease, and I want to help prevent that as much as I can,” she Whethersays. it’s adding a few more years to

“Working with bariatric patients was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done,” she says. “Grown men and women cried tears of joy to me when they could finally bend over to tie their own shoes again and fit in airplane seats for cross-country flights to visit grandkids.”

In the summer of 2014, the growing Boston family made the move to Louisville to be loser to family. Boston continued in the dialysis field as a Renal Dietitian at American Kidney Center for three and a half years before opening Cultivate Your Plate in January 2018. Boston uses the first consultation with her clients to talk about their health history, nutritional concerns and to set several goals for the upcoming weeks and months to get them on the right track. Consultations can be booked by visiting

San Franciso for her husband’s job, Boston took a position at an inpatient eating disorder clinic working with patients who suffered from anorexia, bulimia and binge

Some of her own experience with weight management also inspired her work.

The shift of focus was transformational for “Iher.began to focus less on the number on the scale and more on my quality of life and the joy food brings to the table,” she says. “This revitalized my relationship with food, and I want to share that with others.”

TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2022 / ST. MATTHEWS MAGAZINE / 7

“I struggled during adolescence with yo-yo dieting,” Boston says. “I started studying nutrition in college to help manage my weight, and quickly learned how nutrition can boost energy and mood, prevent disease and, in some cases reverse disease, among many other aspects of life it truly benefits.”

eating “Workingdisorders.withpatients struggling with eating disorders was also very rewarding,” she says. “An eating disorder is often a coping method for something deeper like stress, depression or anxiety in life. Being able to debunk some of the nutrition beliefs my patients had and help them get back to eating normally was awesome.”

someone’s life or helping someone with prediabetes reverse the damage they’ve done to their bodies so they don’t eventually suffer from diabetes, Boston finds true meaning in her work.

Boston has 13 years of professional experience in dietetics and nutrition, across several disciplines. She completed an internship in Phoenix with the Paradise Valley Unified School District before landing a full-time role as a Clinical Inpatient Dietitian at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. At Sinai, she worked with various floors at the hospital for two years before being assigned to the 3,000-plus patient Bariatric department, focusing solely on weight loss surgery patients.

As for her top tips, Boston aims to keep it manageable so clients can more successfully implement the changes and even come up with solutions their whole family will enjoy.

At the top of her list are drinking lots of water and natural, unsweetened beverages, choosing whole grains, adding in more veggies and fruit, having a lot of variety and including plant protein, seafood and lean meat to help you feel full.

“By definition, diet first meant the type of food we typically eat,” she says. “I want to reclaim the word diet in that sense, so it is not seen as this idea of not eating or having lots of restriction and limitation. Don’t diet, treat yourself to health and live the life you crave.”

a big difference in their overall health with just a few small tweaks to their diet.

“I enjoy teaching clients how to balance their portions throughout the day, which can help prevent poor metabolism, sugar cravings, extra-large portions and skipped meals,” says Boston.

In August 2012, when Carter and co-founder Adam Johnson opened a 36-bed residential memory care facility in Southwest Jefferson County, she decided to name it Heartsong Memory Care.

At Heartsong, staff emphasize practical applications of researchedbased protocols to create an environment that minimizes anxiety.

“She even made friends with some of the other attendees,” Andrea says. “The staff’s professionalism and compassion are what helped us make the decision to place [Mom] in Heartsong Memory Care, even though it isn’t the closest to our home. Having our mom in the best care was most important.”

As a dementia care expert, Sheila Carter knew that music is important to set a mood, create energy and provide a calming environment. She knew the brain function that’s retained the longest is the part that relates to music. “Familiar music can reach a person even when their dementia is advanced. I’ve seen people who are essentially unresponsive to their name or touch, who responded in some way when their favorite music was played. They might open their eyes, or smile, or pat their hand or foot, or even hum or sing along.”

Sheila Cater, Executive Director

The following January, they opened Heartsong Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) on that campus. In November 2020, they opened Heartsong East ADHC to accommodate a need for this service on the east end of Louisville. Specializing in care of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia & cognitive impairment, Heartsong East ADHC offers programming Monday through Friday to promote maximum brain functioning.

“Ourindividualized.clientsthank us over and over again for being a caring family to both the resident and their family members and for giving them the opportunity to vent, cry and question,” says AndreaCarter.

“The loss of brain function causes anxiety for people with dementia—both as an emotional reaction to awareness of their own decline, and as a direct result of damage to areas of the brain that control emotion and judgment,” Carter says. “We carefully assess situations to react quickly when needed and avoid overreacting when doing so will only exacerbate the problem.”

W., Impact Board Chairwoman for Greater Kentucky & Southern Indiana Chapter of Alzheimer's Association, says that her mom attended Heartsong East ADHC a few days a week and it provided her with socialization, activities and one-on-one attention when needed, by a staff that is well-educated on the Alzheimer's/ dementia population.

“Activities stimulate the brain through memory & reminiscence, problem solving games, spiritual & emotional support and physical exercise—all cleverly disguised as fun,” Carter says. Staff provides needed assistance with personal care & hygiene, and they are eager to explore out-of-the-box services for those caregivers who may need evening or overnight “daycare” hours.

It was just over 100 years ago when A.H. Bowman went into business, setting up shop on Taylorsville Road, primarily to operate an aerial photography business. That site became Bowman Field, a pristine 426 acres that has seen neighborhoods and businesses spring up at its edges in the intervening

Later Eastern Airlines and Trans World Airlines operated at Bowman, until those operations moved to Standiford Field in 1947. In the 1940s Bowman was known as the busiest airport in the country, serving as a training facility for American troops during World War II. It was even in the movies, serving as the backdrop for the film “Goldfinger” in the early 1960s. Today it serves as a local home for private aircraft and is the place where many aspiring pilots get their wings.

It’s unlikely Bowman could imagine the site today, especially the upcoming spectacle of thousands of people racing down the airport’s runways. For the past two years, the event has been postponed due to COVID-19-related issues, according to Pat MacDonald, who leads the group producing the event. For the record, Bowman Field’s official opening date was May 12, 1920, when Bowman and partner Robert H. Gast began operations there.

“We started this celebration to invite the

He says the two-day BowmanFest drew 25,000 people throughout two days in 2019. However, the 100-year celebration should be the biggest one to date, he says. More than 1,000 runners are expected to dash down the runways as part of the IPA 5K on the Runway race, which includes opportunities to sprint down Bowman’s historic runways. The course takes runners on a unique path around the site, past live plane displays and interactive family activities. After the race, the real fun begins with a display of rare vintage aircraft and warplanes from all over the United States, military vehicles and equipment, military memorabilia, past-war educational exhibits, and plenty of airplanes to see and touch. There will even be a spectacular air show featuring daring pilots and extraordinary aircraft. Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided Todd Hildreth was just 10 years old when he first took an interest in music.

“He told me, ‘We’re looking for a music director and someone with jazz experience. Would you like to do that?’ and I said, ‘Nope, I don’t think so,’” Hildreth says with a chuckle. Hegele persuaded Hildreth to come for a visit and when he did, something

“Thereclicked.was something about the place that just felt right,” Hildreth says.

TODD HILDRETH'S AUTUMNAL JAZZ TOGETHER

“That’s when I discovered jazz,” Hildreth says. He graduated in 1989 with a music degree with a jazz emphasis. Two years later he earned an English degree. He put the English degree on the back-burner and became a professional musician, playing with a number of different jazz and rock groups, including a group he formed in 1992 called Java Men, which incorporates traditional jazz, fusion, world music and InAmericana.1994heplayed on the second stage at Lollapalooza, a four-day music festival. He also played at the Knitting Factory in New York City, a club that books musicians who don’t follow the usual boundaries of rock and jazz.

Todd Hildreth

At the time he was expecting his first child, so he knew he wasn’t going to be touring for a while. He became Ascension’s director of music in January of 2000. Right from the start he felt at home, and he appreciated the fact that folks at the church encourage creative endeavors such as themed services like Dixieland/ragtime, Caribbean, Brazilian or Hispanic.

FEST BRINGS MUSIC LOVERS

Hildreth, who has lived in the Louisville area most of his life, did a number of recordings and some touring before meeting Jamey Aebersold and becoming a member of the faculty for the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops. In 1999 Hildreth got a call from Paul Hegele, pastor at Ascension Lutheran Church.

“I liked music but I never took myself too seriously,” he says. Though the pull of creativity was always there, he had other interests too, so he attended Bellarmine to pursue a degree in English and become an English teacher. On his way to classes, however, he took a detour and stopped through the music department where he played piano in practice rooms, and chatted with teachers and students. This felt like the world he belonged in, so ultimately he decided to switch his major to music.

STRIKE

“Everyone was into keeping the music fresh,” says Hildreth, noting that the church has a traditional organ, a grand piano and a Hammond organ, which is associated with UP THE BANDS

gospel and soul music. Four years ago the church council gathered and the parishioners suggested starting a yearly jazz festival. Hildreth’s ears perked up, as the idea was right up his alley. Soon after, the ALC Jazz Festival was born. They came up with a template in which six bands would perform on two stages (one indoor and one outdoor). Bands perform at the top of the hourone on the outdoor stage and the next on the indoor stage - so there is never a lag in “Thisperformances.way, one band can start the minute the other finishes, so the music is continuous,” Hildreth says. The event features a variety of local and touring artists (usually around 70 musicians in total), offering various types of jazz from different generations and from all parts of the city.

“We’ve had straight, traditional jazz, and more electric, modern, soul jazz, as well as jazz with a fresh feel,” Hildreth says. “[The festival] has really been a labor of love for Hildreth,me.”who has two children, enjoys long walks, good coffees and binging on Netflix. Music, however, remains his great passion. People who lament quitting music often ask Hildreth what made him stick with it. He tells them he didn’t have a choice.

Alexander Eric Hermanos

“There aren’t a lot of cities hosting this type of event where you can grab a chair or blanket, sit close to the artists and listen to six straight hours of incredible jazz. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, with amazing music that washes away the dust of everyday life.”

“If I was invited to a party and there was a piano in an empty room, I’d find myself in that empty room playing it,” he says.

At the festival there are typically food trucks present, some of which offer vegetarian and vegan options. In addition, Goodwood Brewing will be on-site, as will the Comfy ForCow.the first two years, the festival was held in July to coincide with the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops, which were twoweek camps that pulled in people from all over the country including New York and California. The ALC Jazz Festival was held on the weekend sandwiched between those two weeks. The camps have since been discontinued, so last year festival organizers moved the event to September for cooler Nowtemperatures.initsfourth year, the festival, which is now called the Autumnal Jazz Fest, will be held on September 10 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church. The first band to perform at 3 p.m. on the outdoor stage is Isotope, a group of young college students, one of which is a former student of Hildreth. Following their performance, the Sparks Quartet, named after leader Kevin Sparks, will take the indoor stage at 4 p.m. of time of of

“We play modern jazz with a few surprises,” he says. At 5 p.m. Potassium Man, led by Gabe Evens, will play on the outdoor stage. Evens writes all of the music for this group - a high-energy jazz band made up of seven people with three horns. At 6 p.m. things move back indoors for Old Lou’s Ragtime Band, a group that blends young and seasoned players for traditional ragtime jazz.

“People are just really happy to come out for the music,” Hildreth says. “We get a lot of curiosity seekers who want to see what’s going on, and then there are those people who will come to these festivals no matter where they’re located.”

“We don’t yet have the good problem of needing to look for more space, but we may in the future,” Hildreth says. The festival draws a diverse crowd, attracting high school and college students all the way up to retired folks.

Bonifer maintains that the Autumnal Jazz Fest is probably one of the best-kept secrets in “ButLouisville.itshouldn’t be,” he says. The Autumnal Jazz Fest will be held at Ascension Lutheran Church, located at 13725 Shelbyville Road in Louisville.

At 7 p.m. Street Talk, a smooth-jazz and neo-soul group, will perform on the outdoor stage. The evening will conclude with the Jamey Aebersold quartet playing indoors from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. The festival has grown steadily each year. Last year it attracted around 300 people.

“I thought, ‘This would be great if it represented all races rather than just one,’” O’Meally says. “At that moment, a light bulb went off in my head.” She called her sister, Lamia Haley, and the two began to brainstorm. She brought up the idea of creating flashcards with different shades of skin tones including African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, biracial and multiracial. They took it a step further, thinking how neat it would be if they could find a way to inspire kids to feel good about themselves by using words of affirmation. They decided to make alphabet flashcards with encouraging assertions for each letter. For example, “A is for ‘I am amazing,’” “B is for ‘I believe in myself,’” and “C is for ‘I can change the world.’”

“We wake up every day, and based off our thoughts and feelings we determine how our day is going to go,” O’Meally says. “If we teach children to wake up and have a positive take on who they are and where they come from, it could serve to really change their overall quality of life.”

It took the sisters about a month and a half to develop the final design of the affirmation

“It’s all about affirming yourself every day,” Haley says. The women, both moms, recognized the importance of positive daily affirmations, particularly for children so that they can start at an early age countering negative selftalk and self-thought.

Soon after purchasing a house, Kristen O’Meally went on Instagram in search of decor and color inspiration. While scrolling through the site, she came across flashcards with images of children on them. It struck her that every flashcard only included images of Caucasian children.

“We got to design the dolls, which was great because they suggested a baby doll or stuffed animal and we wanted it to be doll with different shades of complexion,” O’Meally says. “I knew I wanted to do dolls that look like actual babies, with baby hairs on the tops of their heads.”

The two-piece toy set called Positive Pals with the “ABC Affirmation” book sells for $14.83 and is marketed to build your baby’s confidence with positive words.

“Our minds were blown,” Haley says. “It’s true that Kristen and I had talked beforehand about what we would do if someone contacted us and said they wanted to sell our product, but we were joking. We joked about it but spoke it into Theexistence!”company allowed O’Meally and Haley free rein over the design.

The women decided to add affirmations to each baby’s onesie. One says, “I am kind.” Another reads, “I am amazing.” A third says, “I am loved.” The dolls come in brown, dark brown, and fair. “We designed the affirmation cards to reflect a different skin tone with a pop of color to catch children’s eyes,” Haley says. When O’Meally and Haley were originally contacted, the plan wasn’t to TAYLORSVILLE

In October of 2020, O’Meally and Haley began selling their affirmation cards on their website, kidsforculture.com. Four months later they received an email from the buyer for Walmart’s baby department. She had found Kids for Culture on Instagram through hashtags and was intrigued by the brand. She reached out because she was interested not only in selling the sisters’ affirmation cards at Walmart, but also expanding the line by adding a book and plush toy.

launch the product until February of 2022, but once the Walmart vice presidents saw the adorable dolls and colorful book, they decided they wanted to sell the product for the 2021 holiday season. That meant expediting the timeline, which might not have been difficult except that a pandemic was happening, which exacerbated shipping delays. The ladies finished all of their designs by mid-April, and then production started immediately. They officially launched on walmart.com on November 1, and sales soared.

“We actually sold out in various regions including Kentucky and Tennessee,” Haley says. The team immediately began working on getting more back in stock the following week.

The Positive Pals are not named, as that’s half the fun of doll ownership. “We want the kids to be able to name their own doll after themselves, their friends or close family members,” Haley says.

I recently hit my 2,000th consecutive day of gratitude email messages to friends and family5.479 years of daily gratitude!

There is not a single habit that I’ve kept this consistently and, in the process, this practice has taught me a lot.

I’ve also discovered that you’re never “done” with the practice of gratitude. It is a daily creation. Without working that muscle, our lizard brain will sail right back to everything that doesn’t work. Bruce Lee once said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” I’m excited to see what life will look like after 10,000 days of gratitude.

Lastly, I’ve learned that sharing gratitude can be even more soul-filling than keeping it all to ourselves. The gratitude contagion effect that happens when we don’t keep our appreciation for our lives tucked away can be a win-win for both the listener and us. Check out gratitudespace.com for more gratitude related content.

Before starting this practice, I didn’t hang out much in a state of gratitude regularly. For the most part, I hung out in a state of survival and suffering. Thanks to the repetition of this daily practice, mantra or even prayer of gratitude, my mind is slowly but surely becoming more primed to seek out what’s right versus what’s wrong.

What is Bridge, exactly? Bridge is a four-person game in which players on opposite sides are partnered up. North and South are partners, as are East and West. Players are dealt 13 cards each from a standard deck of 52 cards, but before any cards are played in what is called a trick, bidding happens. “When you’re bidding, you’re describing what your hand looks like,” Losey says. “You are telling your partner whether you’ve got something worth playing with or not. It’s a conversation.” Bidding goes clockwise around the table until three players pass. A pass is sort of like saying, “I don’t have any good cards,” or “I’ve already shared all the information I can share about my hand.” At this point, actual play begins. To a novice, the bidding process may seem like players speaking in riddles. Fortunately, a player can ask the partner of a bidder, so if East makes a bid, West can explain what that bid means to a player who asks what that bid means. “When we play in sanctioned games, we are always ethical and disclose when asked,” Losey says. “It is kind of like a secret language, but you’re obliged not to keep it secret.” When bidding ends and a contract is set, the person who first bid the contract’s suit (for example, Clubs) becomes the declarer. The player to the left of the declarer makes the opening lead (plays one card from their hand), and the player to the left of that person becomes the dummy. The dummy (always the partner of the declarer) puts all their cards on the table face-up so that everyone can see their hand. The declarer physically plays the cards of the dummy as well as their own hand. Every person must play a card in the suit that was led unless or until a player doesn’t have any more cards in that Oncesuit.every player has put down a card, the trick is done and the person who played the highest card in that suit wins the trick. The winner then leads a card, and the other players, in clockwise order, play a card to the trick, following suit unless they have no more cards in the suit and can play a trump card or must discard from another suit.

LOUISVILLE BRIDGE CLUB MEMBERS KEEP THEIR GAME SHARP TABLEONCARDSTHE

As a child, I remember seeing the daily Bridge section of the Courier-Journal newspaper and wondering what all that North, South, East and West stuff was about. It seemed mysterious to me then and, honestly, remains that way today. Bridge is not necessarily an easy game to pick up, but it is a game that never gets dull. This is why Dotty Losey, president of the Louisville Bridge Club, has been playing the game for 40-plus years. “It’s probably the most complicated game of all of them,” she says. “I’ve heard chess players say that.”

Losey’s parents and grandparents played Bridge, and when she was in high school, her mom began to teach her the game but she didn’t take to it. However, in college, a bunch of her friends played so Losey decided to give it another chance. “We played terribly, but we had a good time,” she says. As with many pursuits, the more she played, the more she learned and the better she played. She even met her husband Bob playing Bridge. Given her decades-long interest in the game, it seems obvious why Losey would be president of the local association. Archives suggest the club formed in the 1930s

The Louisville Bridge Club is affiliated with the American Contract Bridge League, so when individuals play at the Bridge Club, they earn points that can potentially get them to life-master status. Each game costs $7.50 per person.

TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2022 / 27 (perhaps making it one of the oldest in the country).

“In 1936 the Louisville Bridge Club was incorporated,” she says. Through the years the club has had many homes, but it has been in Plainview on Linn Station Road since 2016 - its biggest location to date.

“Our Bridge Club sponsors online games on Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m.,” she says. Of course, COVID-19 impacted the Louisville Bridge Club, and things are only now starting to pick back up. “There used to be days where it wasn’t unusual to have 20 to 25 tables - that’s 80 to 100 people,” Losey says. “Other days would have 10 to 12 tables. It’s about half that now.” 502-254-5200

Some Bridge Club members play five days a week, but the Loseys typically play once a week in person and once a week online.

In-person games are played at the club five days a week - Mondays at 10:30 a.m., Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., Thursdays at 12:30 p.m., and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Interested players can show up about 10 minutes before the game with a partner, if they have one. If not, they can “call the Bridge Club, find out who the director of the game is on the day you want to play, and they will find you a partner,” Losey says.

It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that Bridge is good for the mind. It can boost memory and concentration abilities. “It’s endlessly interesting,” Losey says of the game. “You’ve got millions of variations of what you’re going to get dealt, so there’s always something new to figure out. That’s what makes the game itself so interesting. It never gets repetitive.”

Some of my fondest childhood memories are picnics at the lake with family and friends. We enjoyed Italian submarine sandwiches from our local Italian deli, homemade macaroni salad my dad made, and my mom’s famous brownies with rich chocolate frosting. We enjoyed our meal and then took turns sailing around the lake in my family’s sailboat. You don’t need fancy food to have a picnic. It doesn’t all have to be homemade. Play to your strengths. You do need a little bit of planning, good food, and friends and family. Here are five tips for enjoying the perfect picnic.

My parents owned a restaurant and catering company, so I believe it’s important to eat good, high-quality food at your picnic. It doesn’t all have to be homemade. Don’t overdo it. Set a budget. I prefer to provide the food for my guests instead of a pitchin/potluck. It makes things easier for everyone and you won’t have duplicate items. Also, guests won’t feel added pressure of what to bring and they can enjoy themselves. Who knows - maybe your guests will reciprocate and invite you to the next picnic or party. Set a budget and think of your signature dishes (what you make best), and work from there. I like to serve either fried chicken or sandwiches at a picnic. I like to buy fried chicken from a local restaurant or grocery, or make good sandwiches (ham and cheese on French bread, or BLTs on French bread). For the sides and dessert, I like to serve fruit (cut-up pineapple, 1/2

Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget to pack some snacks. Hungry guests will appreciate some snacks at the picnic before you eat the main meal.

Picnic Pro Tip: Try to use plastic plates and cups if possible. Plastic plates are sturdier than paper plates. If you do use paper, this is the time to splurge on thick paper plates and cups.

Look at your favorite city or local park and reserve a covered table or two. If you’re not able to reserve a table, you can always find empty picnic tables and/or a large area of grass to put down extra tablecloths. If kids will be at your picnic, try to find a park with a playground or spray pad so the kids will have something to do after eating.

Picnic Pro Tip: Try to find a local park where you can park your vehicle close to the picnic area. This will make it easier to unload and load up picnic supplies.

32 / SEPTEMBER 2022 / TownePost.com strawberries and watermelon), homemade pasta salad (with a vinaigrette or salad dressing), lemon bars, brownies and cookies. You can purchase the desserts from your favorite bakery. I like to have plenty of water and canned drinks on hand with slices of lime and lemon. I prefer to keep the number of guests at the picnic to 10 or fewer. It’s a nice number of guests and allows everyone to hear each other talk, and it won’t break your budget.

3. PLAN WHERE YOU PICNIC

Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Keep picnic supplies in one location. I keep plastic cups, plates, silverware, napkins and tablecloths on a separate shelf in the pantry. I’m always ready to plan a picnic. If you don’t have these supplies, it’s an inexpensive investment for cute, plastic picnic supplies.

4.PACK AHEAD

Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget salt and pepper, mayo, mustard and other condiments. I like to use packets so each guest can take a few packets if they need to.

Picnic Pro Tip: Allow yourself an extra 30 minutes before you leave, and double check your picnic list to make sure you have everything packed and ready to go. Try to keep everything in a few large, soft cooler bags or coolers so you don’t have a lot of small bags to carry. Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Pack a few foldable chairs just in case someone might want to sit in a chair. Pack a couple of spray water bottles with fans. I have a few of these on hand and they are a perfect way to cool off on a hot day. They are usually under $10 at most stores. These are good to have on hand for concerts, sporting events and other outdoor activities.

2. MAKE A LIST OF PICNIC SUPPLIES

I don’t want to waste money buying what I already have on hand. Make sure you have enough extra cups, plates, silverware and napkins. Make a list of what you may need to buy, such as disposable tablecloths.

I like to pack a supply bag (cups, plates, silverware, napkins, paper towels for any messes, wet wipes, garbage bags and tablecloths) in advance. Keep all the drinks and food in the fridge until shortly before leaving to guarantee they will be cold. I pack the food and drinks in two soft cooler bags with ice packs. Pack some bubbles, Frisbees, hula hoops and other toys for the kids. I also like to bring a wireless speaker to play music during the picnic.

Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget the games. Let the kids play with bubbles, hula hoops, Frisbees and other toys.

3. Don’t give your personal information to anyone over the phone or through email. Ever! I can’t stress this enough.

Reputable businesses (especially banks) will never ask for your social security number, debit/credit card number, bank account number, etc. over the phone, in text or email.

Protect yourself and loved ones against fraud attempts with these simple and effective tips:

By: Louis R. Straub, II President, Independence Bank

1. Develop a personal relationship with your local bank and financial experts. Have a person, not an 800 number, that you can call. It should be someone that can provide direction and advice when fraud occurs.

5. Confirm your caller is from the organization that they claim. Many scammers are sophisticated enough to mimic the phone number of your bank or utility company to lull you into a false sense of trust. When unsure, it’s always best to hang up and call the institution directly to confirm the validity of the call.

Ways to Suddenly Stop Scammers

Stay alert, develop a personal relationship with your local bank and keep your information safe!

4. Nothing needs to happen right now. Scammers will use words such as “urgent” and “act fast” to pressure your decision making. Don’t bend.

7. Practice safe internet protocols. Set strong passwords, do not use the same password for all online access, keep your devices up-to-date, and do not list personal information on social media platforms. Many websites will display a warning message if you are navigating to a suspected phishing site. Take your fraud prevention one step further and report any occurrence you experience directly to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting reportfraud.ftc.gov.

2. If you get a call, email or text from your financial provider, and it appears strange, irregular or out of the ordinary, use caution. Contact your local banker directly and inquire about the message. If after hours, call the bank’s 800 number on your credit card or bank statements. Never call the 800 number included in (or with) the email or text. If the message is fraudulent, you will be calling the perpetrator.

After a wonderful meal with friends at Silvio’s in St. Matthews, the server returned to our table and said, “I am sorry, Mr. Straub, but your card was rejected.” That sinking feeling of embarrassment sent chills through my soul. But, I knew there must be a mistake. I pay my bills on time, so I thought it must be a problem with the card. “Here, try this one,” I said. A few minutes later, the server returns and shakes her head. Unbeknownst to me, I was a victim of fraud. A nightmare that no one ever wants to face. Fraud is rampant—getting more sophisticated and ruthless with each attack. Every age, gender, and walk of life can be negatively impacted as potential victims. In 2020, identity theft cases topped 1.3 million according to www.aarp.org – a 100% increase in fraud versus the year prior.

HACKING ATTEMPTS SOAR

6. Sorry— it’s highly unlikely you have won a prize, the lottery or a Caribbean cruise. If you ever do, you won’t be asked to pay a fee to ‘release’ the funds.

TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2022 / ST. MATTHEWS MAGAZINE / 33

Even if you take all of these precautions, you still can become a victim of fraud. If you do, immediately let your bank and financial providers know. Change all of your passwords immediately. Usually fraud will be limited to one financial institution or credit card provider. Take a proactive approach and monitor your account(s) closely, as well as signing up for fraud alerts on your accounts and cards. If your information is severely compromised, you may need to change accounts and notify credit reporting agencies.

Highlights of the festival include a parade, exhibits, food and craft vendors for guests to partake in. There will also be music for guests to listen to throughout the area and a Kids Zone. We have apartments now that attract a younger age. There is a younger generation that gets out and spends money in the community. We provide the festival and the concerts. “We’ve always counted it as a family-friendly festival,” says Middletown Mayor J. Byron Chapman. “We serve no alcohol. We have everything from booths to face paintings, dog shows, food, music and parades. It’s a throwback to the old-fashioned type of festival. We’re going to have entertainment in two or three locations. More people are interested because they know it’s the 50th anniversary. It’s catching on that this has been around for a while, so it is here to stay.”

After a cancellation in 2020 and uncertainty in 2021, this year brings a sense of normalcy for the festival, which has thrived over time. The fun will begin at noon on Friday, September 9 and conclude the following night with fireworks. Expecting to attract thousands of guests, Chapman uses the festival as a way to get out and interact with the “I’llcommunity.beatthefestival and in the parade from the time it starts to the time it finishes,” Chapman says. “It’s a long day but it’s a fun day. The parade is always fun. I just enjoy after and before the parade talking to people. If they have a concern they want to talk to me about, I’m all ears. If they have a compliment, I’m definitely all ears. We’re very accessible not only during the festival, but any time. Sometimes I think there has to be a million people here even though I know it’s not. The park is always covered with people.”

MIDDLETOWN FAMILY FUN FESTIVAL AND CRAFT SHOW IS BACK

Even those who don’t reside in Middletown or visit the area frequently can still take part in the fun. The festival attracts visitors from all over the area, and Chapman hears from many who say they are impressed with what the city is doing for the community.

The Middletown Family Fun Festival and Craft Show is returning for two full days of fun, food and festivities on September 9 and 10. Held in the Wetherby Park area, the annual festival will celebrate its 50th year highlighting Middletown.

Many visitors take the opportunity to learn more about the city, which is believed to be named after its location as the middle point between Louisville and Shelbyville.

Chapman also works with other local leaders of similar cities within Louisville including Jeffersontown, St. Matthews and Louisville, KY 40223

they don’t live here. I tell them I’m glad, and to come on back. People realize they can come in and enjoy the fun. We welcome them any time.” The festival provides an opportunity to highlight the city in addition to other events, like concerts also held in the park during the year, and events for Halloween and Christmas. Residents of Middletown are still part of metro Louisville, but receive additional benefits from living in “TheMiddletown.metrois divided into different council districts,” Chapman says. “We have three council people who part of their territory is along the geographic outline of Middletown. I work real closely with them. Middletown is an official tax space. The city of Middletown can provide services with that tax. We provide, in addition to what metro provides, our own police department, garbage pickup, sidewalk repairs and snow removal. Every taxpayer is important. It’s an added service for the residents and they are willing to pay the added tax for those services. The majority of them feel like they are getting a good bang for their buck.”

“We feed off each other,” Chapman says. “If one of us has done it and it worked or didn’t work, we converse back and forthJeffersontown, Anchorage, St. Matthews, Prospect. All the suburban cities, I work real well with them. We just work together to make sure we are being as efficient as we can so we can provide more services.”

Chapman wants to see the city of Middletown continue to grow with events like the festival, and attract even more people to the area.

“We want to keep the city vibrant,” Chapman says. “I always believed the city either grows or starts declining. We don’t want it to decline because that isn’t good for people and business. I thank the residents and the business owners for continuing to support the city and everything they do. We want to maintain a big-time look in a smalltime city.” For more festival information, visit middletownsfamilyfun.com.
