Have you often wondered how some of the infrastructure in your beloved city is taken care of? Have you wondered who works on keeping the streets paved and potholes filled? Who manages the maintenance for our award-winning parks? And what about our common buildings and community centers - they don’t just magically stay kept up, do they? None of these things are possible without a team of professionals, and at the helm of the department dedicated to these types of projects is Kenan Stratman, the director of Public Works for the City of St. Matthews.

Originally from the South End of Louisville, Stratman attended St. Denis Elementary and Saint Xavier High School.

He landed at the University of Kentucky intent on going into the medical field like his mother, a retired nurse. However,

when the time came to declare a major, Stratman felt a pull towards engineering.

When asked why, he says he felt he could help more people by learning how to make infrastructure such as roads and buildings safer. Armed with his mathematical prowess and T-square, Stratman graduated in 2002 and went on to work with the engineering firm HDR for 15 years.

While at HDR, Stratman was involved with many projects and clients, including the City of St. Matthews, who hired the firm to help with revitalization and infrastructure improvement projects.

As Mayor Richard Tonini became the mayor of St. Matthews, he saw a need for a Public Works department. Having worked with Stratman on various municipal projects, Tonini brought him on as director of Public Works.

Given St. Matthews’ broad and varied

boundaries, spanning more than four miles, the list of responsibilities for Stratman’s department is long.

Stratman and his department oversee the various needs of the public structures and green spaces within St. Matthews. The department is also involved with the city’s infrastructure including roads and parking lots. Stratman’s team is instrumental in the upkeep of storm sewers, working closely with the Metropolitan Sewer District to ensure sewers are structurally sound and comply with the federal and local guidelines.

Brown Park, designed by a firm in Boston, is often the site of fun gatherings, trick-ortreating, Christmas light displays and more.

There are also Warwick and Draut parks, and Stratman and his team are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of each park including pavilions, picnic areas, playgrounds and ball fields.

Stratman is quick to point out that he can’t do any of his work as Public Works director without two key people and his crew of about 15. This includes Terry Ridgeway, Public Works supervisor, who has been in St. Matthews for more than 30 years and who Stratman calls the heart and soul of the department. His other go-to person is Jim Birch, city engineer, who has also been around the city for 30 years.

Have you noticed any changes at the local playgrounds? In recent years, Stratman’s department has been able to bring play areas into closer compliance with regulations related to the Americans with Disabilities Act, allowing better access and more fun for those who have a difficult time with noncompliant structures and terrain.

These areas can be found at Brown and Community parks.

St. Matthews is also home to Trinity Stadium, adjacent to Trinity High School.

Recently Stratman had a hand in the field’s redesign to make it a bit more user-friendly.

Community Park fields are also utilized by many locals.

Stratman says at many of these parks, he was able to have permanent restroom facilities built, adding curb appeal and creating a better environment for St. Matthews citizens and others who utilize the parks and playgrounds. Stratman was instrumental in making the Community Park ball field parking lot safer and more accessible.

Stratman is also responsible for the upkeep of City Hall. The building is currently being renovated, including parking lot repairs and

expansion of the Police Department’s space on the first floor.

Public Works is also responsible for the building that houses the Eline Library, which has one of the highest book circulations in the Louisville Free Public Library system. At this time, Stratman and his team are working on the library’s expansion.

While there is always something to renovate, repurpose or reinvigorate in the Public Works department, Stratman is happy to come home to his wife of 15 years and two children, aged 10 and 4. He unwinds by coaching football, basketball and soccer, and is involved with his church, often serving as a planner and running its fish fry fundraiser.

Next time you go out to Brown Park and feed the ducks or hit that home run at the playground, think of Stratman and his group, and all the hard work they put into your city to make it a bit greener, a bit prettier and a bit more safe.

When asked what other projects might be on his plate in the coming months, Stratman says the list is always in flux as needs and budget changes arise. He says he’d like to see more improvements at Brown Park, permanent restrooms at Warwick Park, and renovations at the the St. Matthews Community Center.

One might think that Stratman, as director of Public Works, would have a messy office with blueprints strewn about, and pencils and tools scattered everywhere. Not so.

Stratman likes order and transparency.

While there may be a few invoices and reports typically sitting on his desk, he maintains a rather clean environment - a modest office that holds a desk, built-in bookshelf, table for conferences, and rack that holds plans and various rolledup informational documents. Upon the bookshelf are books transported from the

Whether you suddenly found yourself unemployed, or realized job security is not to be taken for granted and have spent time looking for employment, you know the job search game has changed recently.

Less than six months ago, the job market was considered an employee market, meaning the average job seeker would likely have multiple options. However, according to a July 2020 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are now approximately 16 million unemployed individuals in the U.S. That’s a lot of competition. Even the most qualified job seekers are having to make concessions.

RESUMES ARE MORE THAN KEYWORDS Prior to the pandemic, only about 2% of applicants received an interview after submitting an online application.

If there are 16 million people unemployed and half of those folks are actively applying for work by sending out a conservative estimate of 25 resumes per month, then 200 million resumes are hitting job boards and career portals across the US. How do you stand out?

Think culture. An employer will hire someone they like over someone with more qualifications. After all, you can’t teach personality. Think about the impact of a personality that doesn’t fit in with a team. It could be a detrimental hiring move, undermining the productivity of an entire department. Check the employer website for clues about the work environment and

company culture. Then take it a step further and check out their social media sites. What type of image are they projecting? From the website, you may also be able to determine who you will be working with directly. If so, check out their LinkedIn pages. Then, tie this information directly into the professional statement on your resume or cover letter in a genuine way.

JOB SEARCH STRATEGY First, let’s explore what jobs are available now. As of July 2020, the following areas saw gains - government, professional and business services, hospitality, health care, manufacturing, transportation and warehouse, real estate, and social assistance.

You can increase your chances of finding employment if you consider crossing industries. Start with an inventory of your transferrable skills, or skills that are applicable across multiple industries.

Some examples include customer service, leadership, data analysis, adaptability and technology literacy.

Networking is a must, even in a pandemic, and LinkedIn is your friend. Yes, it can be intimidating. But remember we all started out with zero connections. Look for opportunities within trade and professional organizations that could include organized activities. Set time aside weekly to engage in posts or private messages to nurture relationships. They will bear fruit.

Remember the hidden job market. This refers to jobs that are not publicly posted.

By networking, you are more likely to become aware of job opportunities not OCTOBER 2020 / 9

available to the general public.

KEEP A POSITIVE OUTLOOK Keep hope. Remember, this is a super competitive market. Little victories should be celebrated, such as getting an employer response even if it’s a rejection. It still takes time and effort to respond to applications, especially considering the employers could be seeing thousands of resumes for one opening. It may take longer to find the right job, but don’t be afraid to accept a job offer in the meantime. Some work is better than no work. Job seekers with gaps on their resumes tend to be at a disadvantage.

RESOURCES With all the competition, don’t pull a template off the internet for a resume.

Don’t neglect your LinkedIn profile and summary. These are the pillars of your job search, and it makes sense to invest time and effort in them. If writing isn’t your thing, or if you’re having trouble coming up with accomplishments or powerful adjectives, there are resources. Kentucky Career Center, the Urban League, and even the library system offer free services to the general public. Manson, chief executive officer of the Kentucky Nurses Association (KNA), attributes her passion for supporting and advocating for nurses to the steadfast dedication exhibited by her grandmother.

The KNA is a professional organization that supports the state’s entire population of nurses. Essentially, it acts as a voice for Kentucky nurses and seeks to work for a healthier Kentucky, according to Manson.

In addition to promoting the essential role of registered nurses in the health care field, the KNA serves as an advocate for quality

“In my first year of clinicals I watched nurses communicate with patients and their families and other professionals, and I thought, ‘Wow, they are so phenomenal,’” Manson says. “Then I also saw no one was helping them, so I decided while I was in nursing school that I was going to take care of nurses.”

That’s what Manson has done throughout her entire career. In each of her varied professional roles, she has sought to aid nurses in their quest to aid others.

Manson earned degrees in nursing and health care management, and has been a 10 / OCTOBER 2020

dynamic leader in both patient care as well as health care administration. She achieved the rank of captain in the U.S. Navy. In her 27 years in the Navy, she applied her nursing education in various positions in the U.S. as well as Japan, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Puerto Rico. Delanor is the former deputy secretary for the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

Prior to her work at the KNA, she was the associate vice president of research and design at Hosparus Health in Louisville.

There, she provided leaders with innovation strategies, project design and management, and conducted research on best practices in electronic health record management.

According to Manson, when the KNA was founded in 1906 the intent was to promote the profession of nursing, and set a standard for education and training. That mission has expanded since then, but the crux of the organization’s vision remains the same.

“The founding mothers established and maintained an educational standard, and instituted advocacy for nursing and nurses,” Manson says.

The association’s founders established a foundation to advocate for the highest level of education, encouraged employers to ensure safe workplaces for nurses, and lobbied legislators for policies to keep nurses safe.

The KNA is a constituent member of the American Nurses Association, which operates for registered nurses in the U.S. throughout its 54 state and territorial associations. The KNA has 11 chapters around the commonwealth and is the only statewide organization that supports every nurse.

“When you have that many people on the front lines providing health care, you have to have a strong foundational base,” Manson says.

In Kentucky, approximately one-third of nurses work in hospitals, leaving about 60,000 nurses utilizing their skills in the aforementioned settings. Manson says the KNA has focused recent efforts on educating the general population on the varied skills of nurses, and advocating for their inclusion on community boards and foundations to help improve the health of the nation.

The initiative is in lockstep with the World Health Organization, which designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.

“We have been focusing on really helping people to see nurses in a broader light, to understand how nurses actually impact the health of the nation,” Manson says.

No health care crisis in modern memory has tested the resolve and tenacity of nurses quite like the coronavirus pandemic. Since COVID-19 upended the world earlier this year, health care professionals have been on the front lines, risking their own lives to care and advocate for patients.

“When COVID started, I wasn’t sure how the KNA as an organization was going to support nurses on the front lines,” Manson says. “We started getting calls from nurses asking, ‘What should I do? Should I go to work?’ I began to think, ‘How can we support them and let them know we are working for them?’”

The KNA created the Kentucky Nurses Helping Nurses program to let all nurses know they are not alone. The program is a volunteer network of active and retired nurses who have expertise in mental health nursing, and are available to support nurses as they care for patients and families in this unprecedented time. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the KNA and the International Society of PsychiatricMental Health Nurses.

“We wanted them to know we see you, we support you,” Manson says.

The KNA also launched the Apricot Ribbon Campaign to show support for health care

“Nurse leaders do critical things,” Manson says. “They execute critical thinking skills.

They assess. They come up with a plan based on that assessment, and they execute.

With the help of the University of Louisville’s Speed School of Engineering, the association also packaged and sent Manson has a message for community and state leaders across the commonwealth: 1,000 face shields to nurses. Hundreds of gallons of hand sanitizers were also donated, Include nurses in decision-making bodies

“The things I’ve done, most would see as not the traditional path for a nurse,” Manson says.

“I took the knowledge of being a nurse and leader to every job I had, every opportunity I had. If you want to grow an organization, if you want to impact your community, you need to have a nurse on your board.”

6. WATCH AND LEARN Finally, another great way to build confidence is to watch and emulate the best. Much like with mental imagery, brain research involving mirror neurons suggests that watching is often just as good as doing when it comes to performance.

Find a performer who inspires you and make a point to regularly watch their best performances.

When you are practicing or performing, imagine that you are that performer. In the best-case scenario, your model becomes yourself. Try to get your hands on video of yourself during an optimal performance.

Watch the video over and over again as a way of training your brain to run that particular performance script.

A family-owned business since the early 1970s, Carney’s Carpet Gallery was founded by John Carney’s father Perry in late 1972. Throughout the past five decades, the business has grown substantially. What started with just three sample boards of carpet has now grown into a 3,000-squarefoot warehouse and 3,600-square-foot showroom. Carney bought the business from his parents in January of 1998.

“I’d done the corporate sales thing for a transportation company the prior 11 years out of college, and just got the itch to take on the business I grew up around as a boy,” Carney says. “I absolutely love my job, so I don’t call it work because I really do look forward to coming in.”

In fact, he’s grown to love it even more than his hobby.

“I used to be a pretty low-handicap golfer, but now I enjoy this place more than the course,” he says. “I just love being around people and meeting new ones.”

Sometimes customer conversations don’t lead to a sale, and that’s fine by Carney.

“I know we can’t be the solution for

everyone’s flooring needs and that’s OK,” says Carney, noting that the best compliment he can receive is when people come back or refer family and friends. “That tells me we’re doing things right.”

Currently located on Taylorsville Road, the location is the company’s third since officially opening nearly 50 years ago. The first store was near the zoo and the second was on Bardstown Road, and the company then moved to Jeffersontown in 1977.

“People said my dad was crazy because this little town was nowhere near what it is today,” Carney says. “We actually had a cow pasture next to us back then, where five or six cows grazed.”

The company’s product mix has also evolved through the years. Gone are the large sheetvinyl displays. They currently carry luxury vinyl tiles and planks. Years ago the business offered a handful of wood sample cards, and now it features large wood displays. Carpet sales account for roughly 60% of total sales, and the company offers carpet displays that take up a considerable amount of store space.

The family business is now in its third generation, as Carney’s oldest daughter Rachel helps in accounting and marketing, and his youngest son Jason runs the day-today operations. His mother still comes in to share accounting duties with Rachel, and his second cousin Anna handles daily sales in the showroom. Carney’s wife Becky and daughter Emily are both teachers.

Carney still deals with customers who bought from his father, and his dad occasionally makes appearances at the business to check on things.

“It’s always nice if my dad is here when a longtime customer comes in,” Carney says.

“They talk about the old days - the floor he sold and the floor they bought.”

Carney considers it special that the man who started it all is still offering insight and advice about the business nearly five decades later.

“There aren’t many family-owned businesses approaching 50 years of service,” says Carney, who takes great pride in knowing a third generation in his family is now involved.

Sometimes the staff even get visits from the fourth generation.

“My wife and I have seven grandchildren - I can dream,” Carney says. “I think we have a good future and we sure do appreciate our past.”

Springtime seems to be when the world comes to life. However, we’re cut from a different cloth here in Louisville. For us the world comes to life in autumn, when the leaves show their darker colors before disengaging from deciduous trees, when clouds gather more frequently, and gusts of wind twirl the piles of leaves into orange whipped-cream toppers. Gone are the heat-stroke days and the stale, humid air.

September 22 marks the official first day of fall on the calendar, but usually it’s the first weekend in October when fall begins.

Autumn, in Louisville, is when houses come to life by displaying caricatures of the dead.

and folklore that dates back to before the Civil War, the citizens of Louisville have had a love affair with the dark, the horrifying and the unknown for many generations.

This is evident all year long, but most notably during the Halloween season. And let’s face it - nothing is more unknown than how Halloween will proceed during this strange and unsettling year of the coronavirus.

With few movie releases to inspire masks and costumes (but plenty of face masks to go around for thousands of Halloweens to come), there’s no telling what our beloved holiday will look like this year. If kids are allowed to trick-or-treat, will participating homeowners be required to mark a line six feet from their doorstep and hope With an extensive history of haunted houses they make the treats into the bags? Halloween parties be confined to 10 people or fewer? Will people be too afraid to venture out altogether?

While we don’t have a witch’s crystal ball to see what will happen this year, we can at least look back at what Louisville has done in the past to celebrate Halloween. Be sure to look up the relevant information before planning to attend these events.

In years past, what normally kicked off the Halloween hullabaloo was the Louisville Zombie Walk, which normally takes place on the corner of Bardstown Road and Eastern Parkway. It typically takes place during the last week of August, when thousands of living corpses gather amidst live music and zombie costume contests.

What about closer to October? Well, that’s when all the haunted houses open their creaking doors to lure unsuspecting spectators. Frightening tours include the Devil’s Attic, Nightmare Forest and, the most twisted, Black Orchard Haunted House. Some will be open this year and some may not. A good place to see information and scheduled times, as well as ratings of each tour, is LouisvilleHalloween. com. The most COVID-friendly, if you will, is Danger Run. This is a scavenger-huntstyle game played completely in your car, and plays like a self-guided ghost tour.

If you ever find yourself strolling down Old Louisville in the fall to gaze at the multicolored leaves above your head, you most certainly won’t want to miss one particular house that used to be a tuberculosis sanatorium. In the early 1900s, the Waverly Hills Sanatorium housed patients that were so close to death, they were practically zombies. In fact, so many sickly patients died that a body

Of course, no Halloween would be complete - as one family on this street is well aware - without Charlie Brown complaining about his bag of rocks and his pal Linus looking out forevermore for the Great Pumpkin. But watch out - if you walk down this delightfully cluttered street, you just might meet a few “statues” that aren’t as fake as they seem. Who knows, it could very well take a lot more than a mere pandemic to squelch these homeowners’ Halloweendecorating spirits this year.

Let’s hop across the river for a day trip, shall we? Sure, it’s not in Kentucky, but it’s a popular enough tradition that it counts.

If you venture into Indiana, you can have a family fun day at Huber’s Orchard and Winery picking apples and pumpkins, and shopping for pumpkin bread, pumpkin jams, candy sticks and scarecrows. There’s a play

area for kids, ducks to feed, music and food.

Let’s not forget that Halloween is a fun (if it can be called that) time to stroll through cemeteries and think about the dead below our feet. A favorite in town is Cave Hill Cemetery, the final resting place of George Rogers Clark, Revolutionary War officer and founder of Louisville.

What’s a holiday without a parade? In the past, the Highlands would host a full-blown Halloween parade complete with food vendors, live music, kids and adults dressed

up in their goofiest and scariest costumes, showy Oldsmobiles, games and more.

What about those families with young kids who are too sensitive to endure grown-ups dressing up as killer clowns and Sith Lords? Ever heard of Blackacre Conservancy? It’s a nature preserve and homestead located on Tucker Station Road. This little jewel of a park has special events all year long, and like the rest of Louisville, Halloween is their signature holiday, when they host the Corn Island Storytelling Festival. It’s certainly a spectacle not to be missed, especially since other events will be so limited this year, and this would be the perfect time for those who’ve put it off.

Our beloved Halloween may be a bit limited this year, but Louisville will still find creative and unique ways to observe and celebrate the holiday while remaining safe and in compliance with coronavirusrelated rules. Not all events will occur like in past years, but there just might be some new frights that we can take part in during this freaky and weird Halloween of 2020.

Firewood is always in demand and the inspiration to create a large-scale firewood distribution model unlike anything ever seen before in the state of Kentucky is something that has been percolating in the mind of Eddie Hager for some time.

Hager’s two partners in Big Timber are Todd Dunn and Rick Gatti. Though Big Timber is in its infancy stage of operation, Hager, Dunn and Gatti have been talking about its development for the past year.

“It took money, time and dedication to make this happen,” Dunn says. “We decided to take action and make the dream a reality.”

“No cellulose material is thrown away,” Hager adds. “We’ve not had to haul anything off the property. Everything is being used in every aspect.”

Their combined experience made them the perfect team, with Dunn’s knowledge of streamlining production with the Ford Motor Company and Hager’s business knowledge of pushing his men to get things done.

“And I’m so glad that Rick Gatti is on board with this production,” Hager says. “He’s a machine and will work seven days a week, if need be.”

Since Hager had been in tree business for so long, he asked himself what he could do with all the big logs as he hated to see them go to waste.

“Our portions on our wood are hearty,” Hager says. “With the name Big Timber, we want it to be big and better.”

Hager traveled to Turin, Italy to meet with the owner of a factory that produces the TB 900 Pezzolato Firewood Processor,

a computerized state-of-the-art wood processor that can handle 36-inch diameter logs. The machine was mighty impressive but also came with a hefty price tag: $600,000. Ultimately, Hager decided it was worth the cost and he had it imported and set up — a feat that required several cranes to assemble.

“We already had a small market for bulk firewood, but tapping into the firewood industry was my and Todd’s dream,” Hager says. “Now it’s happening as we speak.”

One of the things that Hager felt strongly about was wanting American wood to be sold in America rather than European white birch, which he says is not even a good wood.

“We are all about America,” Hager says.

“That’s why we want to build this business up because it’s not fair for Americans to not be able to keep a job. I want jobs to stay

property and is working on building a third in addition to a welcome center/pavilion as well as horse riding stables.

“It’s a place for veterans and their families to go to heal,” Dunn says. “And this is important because currently approximately 22 veterans a day take their life, which equates to more than 600 veteran suicides a month. That’s why a place like this is so important.”

They have put roughly $1.75M into this facility, including buildings and amenities.

Response from veterans so far has been extremely positive. Dunn shares the story of a veteran with bladder cancer who went to the Active Heroes Retreat Center with his wife and daughter.

“The man said he didn’t know what faith was until he came here,” Dunn says.

It’s a warm summer afternoon and you’re outside on the patio enjoying a good book.

The sun is glaring down on you and thirst begins to set in. The thought of a refreshing drink makes your mouth tingle. What’s the first drink you’ll reach for? A sugary, sweetened iced tea? A good old PBR? A fizzy soda? What about just a glass of water?

So simple and so, well, plain! However, you’re better off sticking to some water compared to the latter options. Odds are, you’re probably under consuming it, too.

Water is an essential part of our overall well-being, and a vital aspect to maintaining a functioning body. It makes up 55-60% of our total body mass. It is an important part of nearly everything in our body — flushing out toxins, delivering oxygen to our cells, transporting nutrients, maintaining a homeostatic blood pressure, regulating body temperature and contributing to our body’s natural healing properties.

There are two facts to consider which set the foundation for why consuming water is so important: 1. The body can only produce about 8% of its daily water needs.

2. Water distribution is regulated but cannot be stored within the body for a long period of time.

This means our body is almost entirely

dependent on us to obtain its daily hydration needs. Talk about responsibility.

How much water should you be consuming?

The easiest way to calculate an approximation of water consumption is to take your weight in pounds and divide by 2. That is the number of ounces at minimum you should be consuming. For example, a 150-pound person should be consuming at least 75 ounces of water.

However, there are many factors that effect this equation. Activity levels, age, sweating and overall health. The more water you are releasing from the body, the more you will need to replace, like during a workout. In addition, older people are proven to have decreased thirst signals and can face issues maintaining appropriate water homeostasis with the onset of certain diseases such as dementia, medication side effects or decreased mobility.
