TRINITY ROCKS STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP 26TH TIME St. Matthews’ Trinity High School has won the most AAA high school football titles in Kentucky history with 26. In 2019, they celebrated their latest win, defeating Louisville’s Male High School 28-6. Trinity has a 50-game win streak to its credit and has not gone longer than seven years without winning a state championship since winning its first title in 1968. Three times Trinity has won three straight titles, including four in a row from 2005-2008. Under current coach Bob Beatty, the Shamrocks have won 14 state titles in the past 19 seasons.

The Cinderella stories. The upsets. The bracketology. Whether you’re an avid college basketball fan or just enjoy picking your bracket based on the mascots, March Madness is an exciting time. This year, share that excitement by hosting your own watch party for your family and friends with this winning starting line-up. Here are 5 helpful tips for making your March Madness party a slam dunk.

1. CHOW DOWN ON GAME DAY CLASSICS Food for your March Madness party should be simple and easy to eat with your fingers. Chicken wings, jalapeño poppers, pizza and nachos are classic game day go-tos. Take your finger food game to the next round by choosing foods that correspond with some teams in the tournament. For example, serve mini hot brown sandwiches in honor of Kentucky or pulled pork sandwiches for Kansas. For dessert, decorate cupcakes in your favorite team’s colors or use orange and black icing to create mini basketballs.

It’s not a party without libations, and March Madness allows for lots

of creativity for drinks. If a local team is in the dance, keep a cooler full of beer from area breweries. You could also choose local favorites from other teams in the tourney. Keep cocktails simple so that you don’t have to spend your whole party tending the bar. Try premixed drinks like margaritas, sangria and mojitos that you can mix up before the party and let people serve themselves. For the 21-and-under crowd, have bottles of Gatorade (bonus points for orange flavor to tie into the basketball theme!) and bottled water on hand.

2. DON’T SKIMP ON THE TV The bulk of the party will be watching the games, so you’ll want to have a nice-sized TV. If you can swing it, set up several TVs to watch multiple games at once, especially during the first rounds.

Put your TV(s) in a spot where everyone can comfortably view it, providing spots for people to sit and watch if they want to. Think creatively for extra seating, repurpose poufs and stools as seating.

Before the party, check your cable connection to be sure no one has to experience an expected blackout.

If your household is lacking the ideal television, many rent-toown businesses and furniture rental companies offer short-term rentals. If you’re in the market for a new TV anyway, keep an eye out for sales right before the Super Bowl and the weeks leading up to the start of March Madness.

3. UP YOUR BRACKETOLOGY GAME One of the best parts of March Madness is picking your teams and watching them advance along your bracket. Some people spend hours pouring over game notes and expert tips to pick their bracket, while others choose teams based on school colors, mascots or friends who attended that school. No matter how you choose, elevate your bracket game at your party with fun games and contests.

For each game that you watch, award prizes to the guests who choose the winning team on their bracket. You can also pass out prizes for guests who correctly guess the total final score, how many players foul out of the game or the winning team’s field goal percentage. Be sure to have extra brackets on hand for guests who haven’t had a chance to fill one out yet.

4. ENTERTAIN GUESTS WITH OTHER GAMES TO PLAY While the basketball games are the main attraction, have other games for guests to play during halftime or in between rounds. Break out the PlayStation or Xbox for a round of NBA Live or NBA2K. Head outside for a real game of hoops, horse or knockout. Let your guests show off their skills. You could also put up small basketball hoops around the house for trick shots and alley-oops.

5. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE AMBIANCE Tie it all together with a fun ambiance. Have all your guests wear their favorite basketball jersey or other collegiate team wear. If your guests are willing to go all out, ask everyone to wear their best face paint and offer a prize for the coolest design. Join the fun too, donning a referee shirt and whistle to call any party fouls and award points for participation.

Make the party atmosphere extra fun by playing Jock Jams songs in the background. Most party stores sell basketball-themed decorations. You also can’t go wrong with simple black and orange streamers and balloons.

Bowling Sr. had begun a legacy that his son Bernie Jr., and Tonini, would preserve long after his death while serving as mayor.

At one point the city lost their garbage contractor. Tonini was a young boy at the time, but he remembers Bowling Sr. starting a garbage collection department for the city in order to restore cleanliness.

“He went to downtown Louisville and bought some used garbage trucks, hired a few folks and started collecting garbage,” Tonini says. “Some of the neighborhood kids and I worked collecting garbage around St. Matthews.”

When Tonini had matured into a young adult, he decided to buy a house in St. Matthews before he was married.

Bowling Sr. came to him with an offer to participate in some projects at the local level. This led to Tonini’s appointment to the property tax assessment board, and a role as city treasurer.

Tonini remembers Bowling Sr. calling him to offer various volunteer positions over the years.

“Mayor Bowling Sr. was a wonderful guy and the people of the community loved him,” Tonini says. “St. Matthews is a flat area - let’s say he put a lot of pipe in the ground. Quite often you would see him down in the ditches giving work instructions on how to lay the next pipe. He worked with many council members over the years in order to improve drainage in this city.”

When Bowling Jr. chose to run for council member instead of mayor in 2014, then-council member Tonini decided to run for mayor. He won and began his first term in January of 2015.

He is currently in his fifth year as mayor after winning a second term in 2018.

St. Matthews residents can be proud of their beautiful parks - several million dollars have been spent in the last few years on vibrant trees and shrubs, beautiful landscaping, walking paths and enjoyable playgrounds for children.

Tonini asked what the branch’s biggest problem was, and representatives eventually expressed that it needed more space and resources for the general public. Tonini then made a proposal along with other local leaders for a branch upgrade. The result is a gorgeous, 18,500-square-foot building, which opened to the public in May of 2019 after careful planning and construction.

Tonini works alongside other leaders in St. Matthews to lay a foundation for the future of the city.

“It’s just stuff I love to do,” Tonini says. “Let’s say you are a knitter. If it’s your hobby, you go for it. I work with people who love public service. We do what we love. It’s not for self.

It is for the joy of helping people. You have to follow your passion. Whether it be the city council or childhood friends, we wouldn’t be where we are today without the daily effort of our city’s constituents. LGL Steering Committee

Over two decades ago, there were virtually zero opportunities for teenage girls in Louisville to participate in meaningful enrichment or personal development.

Louisville Girls Leadership (LGL) was formed to fill that void.

At the beginning of each school year, LGL welcomes 40 sophomore students from area high schools, with the goal of serving girls from as many schools as possible. This year’s class marks the most diverse group yet, with girls representing 28 schools and 23 zip codes. Over one-third of this year’s participants identify as black or African-American, and nearly another third are mixed, Middle Eastern, Asian, AsianAmerican, Hispanic or Latino.

Last year brought big changes for LGL including a new program coordinator, as well as the addition and expansion of various events and offerings.

“Last summer I joined the LGL staff and began to learn what it meant to work for an organization wholly dedicated to their mission, ‘By girls, for girls,’” says new program coordinator Laura Patterson.

A group of program alumnae who are current juniors and seniors in high school serve on the organization’s steering committee, and are responsible for designing and implementing the year’s programming for the new group of participants.

“Each experience put on by LGL is carefully designed by high school students to challenge their peers to rise up as leaders,” MARCH 2020

Patterson says. “Our steering committee is the force behind each program.”

Heba Qaissi, a senior at Walden School who lives in Jeffersontown, is one of the steering committee co-chairs this year. She applied to be a participant in the program two years ago after a friend encouraged her to apply, and she’s been hooked ever since.

“Going into the program, I didn’t really know what it was about, just that it included girls and empowerment, which sounded pretty cool,” Qaissi says. “It has been a really powerful and eye-opening experience, learning about issues and how we as girls can be leaders. We learn how to really get involved in our communities and use our passions to create a better world.”

After graduating from the program, Qaissi

joined the steering committee as a junior so she could help implement some of her own ideas and share them with a group of like-minded girls. She was inspired during her time as a participant, and wanted the opportunity to have an impact on the younger generation.

Lindsey Latts, a junior at Kentucky Country Day School who also serves on the steering committee, joined LGL and stayed involved for similar reasons. The program had been on her radar for years leading up to her actual participation, as her mom served on the program’s board in its early days. She is proud to carry on the family legacy and help the program to evolve.

Both Qaissi and Latts agree that one of their favorite aspects of LGL is the opportunity to have meaningful connections with other girls from all parts of Louisville in an inclusive, empowering environment.

“Going to such a small school, I’ve felt isolated from all of the other schools throughout the greater Louisville area,” Latts says. “In the past year and a half, I have met so many girls from all over the city, and I am constantly exposed to different ideas and perspectives when we are discussing important issues.”

Qaissi adds that she appreciated the opportunity to grow her network.

“Through LGL I found people with similar underlying passions, but different ways to approach those passions,” she says. “It’s amazing how our creativity and ideas come together to form the events and projects we want to do in the world together.”

The program has even helped Qaissi shape what she wants her postgraduation life to look like as a pre-med college student in the fall.

and empowerment for young girls, either as a day job or as a volunteer,” she says. “This experience has really shaped who I am, and LGL has taught me about service and knowing how to give back, especially if you are able to do so.”

This year’s steering committee chose four main topics around which to design leadership programming. The first, Women in Power, will challenge the girls to find what it means to step into their power and unlock their potential as leaders. College and Career Readiness will allow the girls to discover available opportunities to design a future that inspires them. Anti-Racism and AntiOppression will help the girls unlearn their bias so they can lead with more care, courage and integrity. Finally, the girls will focus on Health and Well-Being, learning strategies to take care of their mental, physical and sexual health as young people and leaders.

The learning objectives are addressed through monthly sessions that allow the

In 2015 St. Joseph Children’s Home joined The Face It® movement, which seeks to end child abuse and neglect once and for all.

“We currently have three core programs residential treatment, therapeutic foster care and adoption, and the child development center, which serves close to 350 children, infant to 21 years old, annually across programs,” Christina says.

The residential treatment program is home to 48 children who live on campus while waiting to be placed back into a home setting such as a foster home or a relative’s home. The children receive intensive individual and group therapy, and participate in an array of therapeutic activities like yoga, a bike club, and a hip hop dance class.

“Art therapy is huge here”, Christina says. “Mainly that just has to do with how your brain really copes with trauma at that age. A lot of our kids haven’t developed the brain structures or neuronal connections necessary to process trauma in a verbal way. Art is a nonverbal way to do that.”

St. Joe’s therapeutic foster care and adoption program is aimed at providing safe and loving homes for children in need. The driving force behind the program is to find kids their forever, adoptive families, and St. Joe’s continues to have one of the highest rates of adoption in the state among private agencies.

“We provide our foster families with every level of support, from physical needs such as clothing or car seats to emotional needs,” Christina says.

The child development center (CDC) cares for children six weeks to five years old. The program is open to the community, and to St. Joe’s foster families and staff. Kids can come in and be involved in early childhood education programs. Some of the CDC staff has been working at St. Joe’s for more than thirty years.

for taking care of children across our three programs,” Christina says. “We also give our kids across our programs what every human being deserves, and that’s safety and love. I think that’s beautiful. That’s really what we do best, and we hope to continue helping more kids. There’s big things coming down the pipe in our future and we’re excited to expand our reach further in the community.”

An annual St. Joe’s picnic - a tradition that dates all the way back to 1850 - is held every August.

“New families have been created at picnics,” Christina says. “Couples or individuals have come to the picnic, happened to talk to a volunteer at our foster care booth, got connected, and now have adopted children through our foster care and adoption program.”

St. Joe’s depends on the generosity of the community to continue operating as a safe and loving place for children to thrive.

1. BOOK EARLY Lots of people travel during Spring Break so booking early assures you can get better flights, hotel rooms and attraction tickets.

Schools typically release their yearly calendars at the beginning of the school year, giving you plenty of heads up to book Spring Break early.

When you book early, you have a better

In education, the secret is to develop a passion for learning in students. In today’s society, the pressure to succeed at school can lead to anxiety and frustration even in our youngest children. In order to develop an environment that nurtures the spirit and provides excitement about success, leaders at Christian Academy of Louisville (CAL) developed the perfect mix at their Rock Creek campus.

Serving students from age two through fifth grade CAL’s Rock Creek campus provides a unique mixture of hands-on learning, hightech approaches and a higher purpose.

“When you commit to provide Christian education, you commit to excellence in everything,” Principal Krystal Morrow says. “There is a higher accountability. This is not only in what we teach, but in how we teach. We provide a biblical worldview in every class, showing how God’s design is not only the basis for science, history, geography and math, but also in how each student learns and perceives him or herself. When students understand their place in God’s love, they want to develop their talents and their abilities with a personal perspective.”

Parents see that difference as well.

“There’s something different when you

walk in the doors here,” says Brandt Davis, a parent of two Rock Creek students. “Everyone - teachers, parents and students - knows everyone’s name. Our children love the special facilities, and that they get to start music and Spanish as early as kindergarten. There’s a spiritual thread that is consistent in everything that happens. It all adds up to a school that our kids want to go to every day.”

Founded in 1976, Christian Academy moved into the Rock Creek facility in 1978. In 1998 a larger campus known as English Station opened, and the organization’s leaders planned to move all students to the new location and eventually sell the Rock Creek facility.

“But the demand continued for Christian education in this area,” Superintendent Tim Greener says. “So we converted this campus to an elementary school, and it became a special place to serve the elementary years.

The small class sizes, the open-campus environment, and the vision to support all students, including those with learning challenges and learning gifts, made this campus a special place for exceptional Christian education.”

Rock Creek currently offers a wide scope of programs that have received local and national attention. Last year, Christian Academy received Louisville’s only distinguished designation for middle school and high school STEM programming. The program begins in kindergarten for all Christian Academy students. Rock Creek is an official STEM launch school.

In 2012 the Rock Creek campus became one of the first Louisville elementary schools to receive the Blue Ribbon of

Excellence from the U.S. Department of Education. The school is an open-air campus - this, combined with a separate Collaboratory space and an outdoor garden, gives students the chance to refresh and explore their creativity.

occupational therapists, as well as teachers addressing different learning needs, work in the Sensory Gym. The Association of Christian Schools International, which oversees 23,000 Christian schools, awarded CAL its first Exemplary Accreditation in 2017, underscoring the school’s ability to integrate spiritual and academic experiences at the highest level.

In 2014, CAL’s Providence School opened for students with Down syndrome. These

students are mainstreamed with their classmates for the majority of the day, which creates an inclusive, empowering and supportive community benefiting all students.

Erin Castleberry, a parent of a Rock Creek student, feels the sense of community at Rock Creek is special.

“There is a sense of family here,” she says.

“We all support each other, and we love what our teachers are doing to help children develop to be all God wants them to be.

They build on their strengths and help them with their challenges. We’ve seen our daughter’s self esteem and self worth flourish in this environment. We watch our children grow as leaders and servants even at this young age. This school at Rock Creek is just a unique place.”

When Cara Starns chose to attend a session on child victims of human trafficking during a regional conference last year, she had no idea it would alter the course of her life.

“It just so happens that I was sitting next to a child trafficking detective from the state during the session,” Starns says.

When the presenter revealed that Kentucky had no shelter specifically and solely designed to serve sexually exploited and trafficked children, Starns says, “the detective elbowed me and said, ‘Did you hear that?’”

Even though human trafficking had been at the center of her career from the very beginning, Starns, who had recently returned home to Kentucky to develop a Refuge for Women site in Louisville, was shocked to hear that no shelters existed

in Kentucky for trafficked children — especially since the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services reports that there have been 787 reported incidents of child sex trafficking in Kentucky since 2013, involving 949 alleged victims.

Still, Starns says, “my first reaction was, ‘What does this have to do with me?’” As far as she was concerned, her work had not changed. It was still to open a Refuge for Women site in Louisville.

Before long, however, that elbow nudge from the detective turned into an internal nudge Starns couldn’t ignore. She spent six months conducting research on what it would take for Refuge for Women to open a children’s shelter in Kentucky. Her conclusion was clear, if not disappointing.

“I determined that a shelter for sexually exploited and trafficked children would have to be its own thing,” Starns says. “Refuge for Women couldn’t do it.”

When Starns presented her research findings to the national board of Refuge for Women, she thought it was the end of the matter, an inquiry she would ultimately put behind her. Instead, “they told me that if I wanted to take it on, they would support me,” she says.

This was the second nudge, which was quickly followed by a third.

“A family foundation called and told us they would provide seed funding if we decided to move ahead with the project,” Starns says.

Despite all these nudges, Starns knew she was up against tough odds. Several other groups had tried to open shelters for sexually exploited and trafficked children in the past, and each attempt had failed. She had no reason to believe her efforts would be any different than previous ones. Starns decided to continue moving forward, however, and others soon decided to join her.

What started as one woman’s research project quickly developed into a nonprofit organization called Safe Passage, whose mission is “working to open Kentucky’s first shelter for sexually trafficked and exploited children.”

She hopes to be able to open the shelter by 2021. Safe Passage will not be eligible for government funding until after the shelter has opened, so the organization is currently focused on raising support from monthly donors and foundations.

In addition to Starns, who serves as the organization’s Founder and President, Safe Passage is led by a seven-member board of directors, one of whom is a survivor of childhood exploitation.

“They’ve partnered with me in our absolute hardest stage,” Starns says, “building from absolutely nothing.”

Even though Safe Passage is less than a year old, they have already raised more than $150,000 toward their fundraising goal of $200,000 this year. While Starns is proud of this accomplishment, she knows they have a long way to go toward sustainability.

“The shelter will cost half a million dollars

When it is open, the shelter will provide holistic aftercare to child victims of sexual exploitation and trafficking. The residential program will be geared toward girls aged 12-17 and will last up to 12 months.

Comprehensive, evidence-based and traumainformed services will be provided in an environment designed to encourage residents to rebuild safety, trust and community.

Outpatient services, such as therapy, classes and case-management, will be available to victims who have a safe place to return.

Trafficked boys will also be eligible for outpatient services, and caregivers of trafficked children will be able to receive

support services that will equip them to partner with the child in their recovery.

The fact that the shelter won’t open for a couple more years hasn’t kept Safe Passage from finding other ways to address child sex trafficking in the meantime. Safe Passage currently offers a youth prevention program for students across the state called “Raise the Standard.”

The program, which was founded under Refuge for Women, has two main sessions: sexual abuse and human trafficking.

“We do both because all of our human trafficking victims have been sexually abused before,” she says. “The sexual abuse session is heavy because it’s not just preventative, it’s an intervention.”

According to the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18, meaning that in any given session,

The human trafficking session, by contrast, is more preventative. “Most of the time, if people are trafficked, they’ve already left school,” Starns says.

Safe Passage is working on developing a training for foster parents on how to recognize the signs of child sex trafficking and how to intervene. According to the Safe Passage website, “94% of [victims of sex trafficking] already have a history with child welfare.” Starns hopes to begin offering the training as soon as next year.

Starns knows that the level of comprehensive prevention and support Safe Passage will offer is needed now more than ever.
