Each year, St. Matthews residents welcome more than a hundred new neighbors thanks to the free tree program run by the city. Since 1990, St. Matthews Public Works has offered homeowners the opportunity to have a free tree planted in their yards, providing decades of benefits as the trees age and mature.

“We do our planting in March, or when the nursery is able to pick the trees up, and take requests throughout the whole year. Planning starts in March or April, and we typically order about 125 trees annually.”

Stratman says the roots of all these trees grow downward, reducing the odds of future sidewalk issues.

Trees are generally planted only in the right-of-way area of a property, in the yard between the sidewalk and the road.

Stratman says the team takes utility lines into consideration and will plant a tree farther into the yard with the homeowner’s consent.

continuously or annually, and evergreens that may block sunlight on adjacent sidewalks, which could hinder ice melting during the winter. Trees planted in the right-of-way must also have a sidewalk clearance height of 8 to 10 feet and a street clearance height of 14 feet.

Stratman says there has been an effort to ensure larger trees are planted away from homes and areas where they could cause damage.

“If you drive around St. Matthews, you’ll see some massive oaks,” he says. “A lot of those drop big limbs. We want to provide the tree canopy, but at the same time we don’t want a tree that is massive and can cause problems.”

While tree removal is the responsibility of the homeowner, St. Matthews does offer free stump grinding. After a tree has been removed in the city right-of-way,

“There are a couple things we take into consideration,” hesays. “We have utilities marked before we do any digging to make sure we don’t put anything over a water, sewer or electric line. The other thing we look at is existing power lines. We don’t want to plant under power lines because they end up getting butchered. For those who want a tree but have a power line in the right-of-way, they sign a release that allows us to go up into the yard and plant the tree farther away.”

Requests for trees come from all over St. Matthews, and leftover trees are usually planted in parks after all residents’ requests are filled. Only homeowners are allowed to request a tree planted on their property, and requests can be submitted on the “Request a Tree” form on the City of St. Matthews website.

Trees must be placed 20 feet apart or 30 feet from a traffic sign, and the requester assumes responsibility for maintaining and trimming the tree after it is planted.

More than 3,000 trees have been planted in St. Matthews through the program.

“It takes about two months to plant all the trees,” Stratman adds. “A lot of that has to do with weather and other things going on. It takes about an hour to plant a tree and transport it to the property. We measure, dig down and set the tree.”

If a property owner would like to plant a different tree, they are free to do so at their own expense and only need permission if planting in the right-of-way area. Trees not allowed in the rightof-way include species that bear fruit, trees that drop seeds or other growth

residents can have the remaining stump ground at no charge by the Public Works Department. If a resident needs a tree in the right-of-way removed because it is diseased or hazardous, permission from Cleary is required.

“We recommend residents request stump removal between March and September,” Stratman says. “That way, when we reseed, the grass has time to grow. If you remove the stump while it’s cold, you’ll have a mud hole all winter.

We ask the resident to remove the tree with 12 inches of stump remaining. We have a grinder that grinds the stump and roots down. We come in with a backhoe, remove the wood chippings, and put down fresh soil, seed and straw.

Some stumps cost between $500 and $1,000 to remove, so it’s a benefit to the homeowner.”

Stratman says the city spends about $28,000 a year on the free tree program and sees countless benefits to the neighborhood and surrounding area.

“This is an indefinite program,” he says.

“These trees help reduce climate change and purify the air.”

grocery stores and food distributors, it transforms surplus food into hundreds of healthy meals. The meals, made in the Feed Louisville commissary kitchen, plus rescued pantry staples, are picked up or delivered to agencies and programs such as women’s shelters, temporary housing facilities, street outreaches and smaller pantries.

Feed Louisville is an organization with a twofold mission. While alleviating hunger in the community, the nonprofit fights food waste. Working with community partners such as restaurants, caterers, bakeries, farms, 10 | February 2026 | TownePost.com

than 700,000 meals for the community and has prevented more than 1 million pounds of food from being dumped in landfills.

In addition, it has distributed more than 400,000 pounds of foodstuffs and snacks to at least 24 human service partner agencies.

The organization began in March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic forced soup kitchens and other resources to shut down.

Initially, a few hundred meals a week were provided and delivered by Green. Then, as the former co-owner of Ramsi’s Café on the World, Kamar was able to reach out to several contacts in the hospitality industry.

Within two months, 16 restaurants were on board supplying meals for the organization to distribute. Money was raised, and

the participating restaurants were paid $2 a meal, although some did it for free.

Eventually, excess food from farmers, bakers and others began to be donated, and the initiative shifted to a food rescue model. In 2023, the operation moved to an 8,000-square-foot space in the Butchertown neighborhood.

Around the same time, Green moved on to work in a separate street outreach program, which continues to grow.

“We are an intersection between food rescue

and hunger relief,” Kamar says. “On one side is the hospitality industry with an incredible amount of surplus food that is still viable. We have a crazy array that gets donated to us. Our partners are health department-certified, and our chefs are safe food handling experts. The meals produced are 70% from scratch and 30% sourced from catering donations. On the other side are community feeding partners, which include domestic violence shelters, human service agencies and street outreach.”

A typical day at Feed Louisville starts about 8 a.m. Chefs arrive and start planning for the day; they already have a rough idea of what is in the freezer and what produce is on hand from farmers markets. At the same time, drivers and volunteers start picking up food from roughly 100 restaurants, caterers, farmers and bakers. Throughout the day, they continue their scheduled runs plus a few random stops at caterers who have surplus, traveling all over town.

During the day, meals are delivered, and others are picked up by community feeding partners. Later in the afternoon, chefs assess what is available for the next day. They may remove hamburger from the freezer and place it in a refrigerated space to thaw.

Vegetables are prepped and chopped. It all concludes between 4 to 5 p.m.

“Zest, a line of grab-and-go meals, is our revenue initiative,” Kamar adds. “Nonprofits need to find ways to raise and earn their own money to create sustainability. The food is fun, globally inspired and has no dairy, gluten or soy. In the future, Feed Louisville would like to provide workforce training for the people they are serving by sourcing candidates through their partner agencies. Funding is being sought, and planning is slowly moving forward. A three-month, hands-on curriculum will be developed and tested carefully on a small scale. Kamar stresses that the program would be more than just training; it would ensure students are taught other skills, such as resume building, to be successful.

The Louisville community can assist Feed Louisville in several ways. Besides

donations, volunteers are always needed, and typically 60 to 70 individuals give their time each week. To sign up, visit feedlouisville.org. Each has made the commitment to supply Feed Louisville with its surplus of viable foodstuffs when it would be easier to throw it in a dumpster.

“Feed Louisville started as a response to a crisis,” Kamar says. “I never imagined we would be where we are today. Unless the obstacle of hunger is removed, people can’t think or focus. By removing hunger,

relationships can be built and people can move to the next level of life. Our niche is needed and unique.

“This work belongs to the community. We can’t do it without our many volunteers who are in the kitchen chopping, peeling, packaging, taking in donations and organizing the walk-in, and our drivers.

We have incredible community partners, committed local food producers who help keep perfectly edible food out of landfills, donors and supporters.”

KENTUCKY BLACK TRAILBLAZERS PUSHES TOURISM INTO A NEW REALM Writer / Helen McKinney

Years ago, when Janette Marson discovered 19 Crimes wine bottles, she was intrigued.

What caught her interest was the fact that the bottles integrated augmented reality onto the actual wine label — technology she had always wanted to use for the tourism industry.

Marson is president and CEO of ShelbyKY Tourism.

“The technology, of course, is hugely expensive and cost-prohibitive,” she says.

That is, until ARPA grants came along.

In the wake of COVID, Kentucky State Tourism received ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) money to be used for projects that included at least six cities or counties and were transformational in nature, she says. “In order for a project to actually be ‘transformational,’ it would have to be different and deeply meaningful.”

That’s when the idea for Kentucky Black Trailblazers was born. Once Marson devised the initial concept for a Black history trail, she remembered the augmented reality technology of the wine bottles and wanted to integrate the two into a groundbreaking new concept for the tourism industry.

articles about Oldham County’s past and its connection to Black history and the Underground Railroad,” Hydes says.

“Extensive research has been done for Alex Beaumont and Henry Bibb, but when the opportunity came to add a third stop, we went with the little-known story of Eliza Brooks, who escaped with her babies and a friend to Indiana by swimming the Ohio River completely unassisted. Eliza Brooks’ story is an emotional one.”

Choosing who to highlight and limiting it to only three individuals for each partner was difficult. The limitation was due in part to the cost of the project.

“At this time, there are no plans to create additional augmented reality experiences,” Marson says. “We have thought about expanding the project to include additional Black historical sites and people — minus the augmented reality feature.”

She says feedback has been incredible.

“This project has truly been transformational for people.,” she says. “There have been some people who did not realize that the Harlem Hellfighters were actually in their family, and it brought them to tears to find out that not only were they family, but they are finally being recognized for their incredible bravery.”

Hydes says she has had many visitors comment on “the lifelike feel of each trailblazer and how they feel as though the trailblazer was standing with them. ‘I have chills’ has been the most common reaction to all three.”

Kentucky Black Trailblazers was recently added to the Kentucky African American Heritage Trail, a journey through courage, culture and contribution. With more than 50 remarkable sites across the state, the trail shines a light on the contributions of African Americans in Kentucky’s history.

In February 2025, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear visited Shelby County, where he joined tourism officials and local leaders to highlight the multicounty tourism initiative. He says the Kentucky Black Trailblazers experience “honors the profound contributions of Black Kentuckians throughout history by showcasing the diverse narratives that shape the commonwealth.”

The project is significant for telling local history. Marson says that according to local Black historians, “most Black history was not written down. It was handed down generation to generation. So much of the history has been lost. This project has helped shed light on some very important figures in Louisville Tourism President and CEO history whose stories needed to be told. Just Cleo Battle says the project “is a powerful the telling of the stories and shedding light on tribute to the influential Black figures

“I think AR is the most natural progression with experience tourism,” Hydes adds. “The challenge for tourism offices is to create memories and emotional connections to our destinations. AR is the perfect, though expensive, way to accomplish visitor connection to your history. I think AR is an up-and-coming way to really experience history … by stepping into the past. It gives me chills thinking about it!”

The Frazier History Museum has big and exciting plans for 2026, continuing its mission to inspire, engage and educate by

“Our brand is where the world meets Kentucky,” says Andy Treinen, museum president. “I say it all the time: There is no better place in the world to learn all there is about Kentucky culture, history, industry and people than here.”

Three major initiatives are on tap at the nonprofit museum located in the heart of Museum Row on Main Street in downtown Louisville. This year marks the 250th

anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the Frazier Museum is recognizing the milestone by highlighting important historical artifacts on display.

Frazier is home to many significant pieces from a national perspective, including Teddy Roosevelt’s “big stick,” the 1875 arrest warrant for Mary Todd Lincoln and the nation’s oldest remaining Civil War monument, the Bloedner Monument. Each will receive a special decal with additional context on its place in history.

In an effort to expand its brand statewide, the Frazier Museum is hitting the road to visit all 120 Kentucky counties and share stories from across the region. Currently located in the museum is 120: Cool KY Counties, an exhibit consisting of two touchscreen maps of Kentucky. When visitors touch a location, they are shown content specific to that county, including a text story, a video and a song by a local artist. Frazier hopes to share those stories statewide and help drive tourism to other counties.

Treinen says only a small portion of the museum’s overall attendance comes from Kentucky residents who live outside neighboring counties, and he wants them to know Frazier is showcasing them as well.

“We’re getting a vehicle and we’re going to every county fair and event,” Treinen says.

“We want the rest of the state to understand we are sharing their story too. We met with five to six individuals in every county, and they helped us curate the story they

“The fact that we were named best museum by people who live in Kentucky is a big deal,” he says. “I don’t take that lightly. I’m very humbled because there are so many amazing museums in this state.

When the Bourbon Classic returns to Louisville Feb. 25–28, it will once again affirm its place as one of the most distinctive lifestyle events in Bourbon Country. The founders envisioned something more immersive than a tasting event: a lifestyle gathering that honored bourbon’s authenticity while placing it in conversation with culinary and cocktail artistry. CONNECTING SENIORS TO RESOURCES & SUPPORT Writer / Julie Yates

As individuals age, they are often faced with new challenges and concerns. Fortunately, the senior population of Louisville and surrounding areas has a source to provide needed answers to questions that arise.

Aging Services, a division of the Office for Aging and Disabled Citizens (OADC), which is within the Office of Social Services in Louisville Metro Government, provides information on resources, educates the community and participates in initiatives that improve funding and programs.

“Concerned neighbors, caregivers or children have questions. They might be worried about an individual who lives alone and is having trouble maintaining their home. Or someone might call who is on a fixed income and their landlord told them the rent is going up. People who don’t drive worry about food insecurity.

We can tell them about programs, services and resources for affordable housing, meal delivery, cleaning or laundry services.

“Part of Aging Services is community outreach,” Woosley adds. “We do free presentations at places such as libraries, senior apartments, care communities or church groups. Our five main topics are fall

prevention, community resources, disaster preparation, scams and fraud, and healthy living as people age. We will go talk to senior groups anywhere in the city if there is a request at a certain location.”

The fall prevention presentation, Balance Basics, is a one-hour interactive class led by Woosley. The first 30 minutes is a

learning discussion on what causes falls and tips to avoid them. The last half hour is an instructor-led activity. Stable chairs without wheels and a wide-open space that has a blank wall or a projection screen are required. Participants receive a packet of materials and resources.

Another example of community outreach

is TRIAD, a free monthly lunch and informational meetup for seniors. Based on a national model, it began when three organizations — the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the National Sheriffs’ Association — decided to work together with the purpose of keeping the aging population safe from

crime. TRIAD in Louisville is facilitated by Aging Services and focuses on prevention of elder abuse, updates on scams and fraud, public safety and other similar topics. To RSVP, anyone interested can call the Office of Aging Services or visit its website.

“The TRIAD meeting is held on the second Tuesday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Our Mother of Sorrows Cafeteria, located at 70 Eastern Parkway,” Woosley says. “There is always a speaker scheduled, such as a fire department representative, and besides a free lunch, participants get a chance to network and interact. A portion of the meeting is set aside for attendees to share what they have going on in the community.”

Each month, OADC offers a monthly e-newsletter. It includes upcoming event information, breaking news about resources, tips for what to do if needs arise such as how to shelter in place, recent scams and even recipes. To subscribe to the newsletter, visit

Each year, at the start of the warm weather season, the OADC holds a major event.

Anyone over the age of 60 can receive an electric box fan during the annual Fan Fair. The giveaway began in 2016 when the OADC and the Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency responded to the many calls they received from seniors needing heat relief. This year, 700 fans were handed out, and attendees could visit informational booths staffed by representatives from CenterWell Senior Primary Care, PACE Senior Community Care of Kentucky, JenCare Senior Medical, University of Louisville Brown Cancer Center, AARP Kentucky, DAIL Office of Dementia Services, Wellcare and more.

“As Aging Services coordinator, I serve as the city representative on several local councils, commissions and advisory boards,” Woosley says. “It’s important that

I have a good pulse on the struggles aging citizens face. Also, our office needs to know the goals of current initiatives and programs.

“Aging Services is important to seniors because it can direct them to services and resources,” she adds. “Sandwiched in with the resources are different levels of care and cost, plus information on how to pay for them. People can face gaps. They may not be able to qualify for one program, but they might for another. We can direct them to how they can piece together different ways to make decisions or meet goals such as staying in their own home.”
