all to mind your favorite special occasion. An engagement? A wedding? An anniversary? A graduation? Who celebrated with you? Any special gifts come to mind? Well, if the gift sparkled, it may have come from Smith’s Jewelers on the Square. Countless special occasions in Noblesville include a stop in the town’s oldest jewelry store in Old Town on the Square. Store staff members and owners, Esther and O’Dell Lakes, feel they’ve celebrated with thousands of customers over the years. As Erika Pearson, who joined the staff in 2003, explains, “It all starts with a glance in the window. When customers come in to Smith’s Jewelers, we enjoy getting to know them on an individual basis—some even start to feel like family.” For nearly seven decades, the Hamilton County landmark has been a treasure trove nestled in a three story 1870’s building at the southeast corner of 9th & Logan. In a world of big box stores filled with glitter, Smith’s Jewelers is a cozy, charming and sophisticated Old Town showroom. The store is complete with high-ceilings, a custom design shop, and high-end lines created by leading industry designers.
According to O’Dell, the company was founded in 1946 by Claude Shane. Shane purchased a company called Smith’s Jewelers in Bedford, Ind., and used their name for multiple locations. This included the original Noblesville store that was located for its first six years in what is today’s Key Bank building. The Lakes purchased the business in 1970, years after it had moved to its 98 North 9th Street location on the northeast corner. As one of the oldest and most recognizable business sites in Hamilton County, a plaque outside the front door presents interesting facts of the building’s past. What is today’s showroom on the main floor, and design shop above were once Kenley’s Meat Market and a newspaper office. In place of the offices on the 3rd floor there was a theater. After the newspaper and theater had moved, in came a Masonic Lodge. When Kenley’s moved to 10th Street for expansion, Smith’s moved from across the street to its present day site. According to Pearson, Smith’s is more than a historic building and business. It’s a proud partner with the entire Noblesville community and works year ‘round to demonstrate it.
“We are here for our community—to support and serve,” Pearson says. “We sponsor as many local causes as we can, such as ‘Prevail’, Boys and Girls Club, Megan S. Ott Foundation, family music programs and youth sport teams … to name a few. We’re proud of our town and we absolutely love being in the heart of it all!” Gesturing toward the beautiful jewelry displayed around her, she remarks on the new fall lines and incoming holiday merchandise. “We cater to our customers’ unique desire for expression,” Pearson says. “If we don’t have it, we can get it or design it!” Commenting on emerging trends, Pearson points out rose and yellow gold jewelry, large and classy fashion chain necklaces by Stephanie Kantis, Lucite jewelry adorned with crystals by Alexis Bittar, and large face watches by Movado and Ru du Rhone; all leading the way in the incoming season. She serves up a reminder that custom orders, too, never go out of style. Her final words on the subject? Pearson smiles and says, “You’ll have to come in and see for yourself!”

Becoming a crime statistic is one of the worst feelings imaginable. It’s like a quick punch to the gut that leaves a nasty, empty feeling behind. I’ve been there. You may have too. The morning I realized my car had been stolen, I felt unlucky and possibly cursed (the same car had been burglarized a couple months prior). At the time, I told myself I needed to take more precautions to ensure my personal safety. Fast-forward more than a decade. On the way to work several weeks ago, I saw the aftermath of a shooting at the edge of my usually quiet subdivision. It was enough to refuel my desire to be proactive. I took part in a Women’s Self Defense Seminar hosted by Fishers-based Krav Maga Indy. On a rainy Saturday afternoon, we crowded inside a hot martial arts studio to learn the basics of self-defense.
Aged 18 to retirement, we took turns hammering our fists into boxing pads and pushing our partners off of us. Some of us giggled during sparring, feeling slightly embarrassed and hoping this will ready us in case the occasion should arise. “We love the groin,” Instructor Jeff Fredericksen tells us. “It solves a lot of problems.” The women around me share looks of bewilderment and surprise. “The eyes are another point to aim for when all else fails,” he continues, putting his hand over his sparring partner’s face. He goes on to demonstrate how to effectively strike those areas of the body in a myriad of situations. Fredericksen is an expert—he’s the Head Instructor at the state’s only official Krav Maga Worldwide training center. Fredericksen opened the center in 2008 and has trained law enforcement at the local, state, and federal levels. Krav Maga originated in Israel in the late 1940s/early 1950s as a means of military

training in a short span of time. It was brought to the U.S. in 1981. Fredericksen offered the class several key takeaways, rooted in common sense: 1. Awareness: People often fall prey to criminals simply because they’re not
paying attention. Fredericksen says always be looking around, especially when you’re alone in a public place like a mall parking lot. 2. Body Language: Stand tall, walk with purpose, and look confident. The less fear you show in your face and body, the less likely you are to become a target.

3. Have An Escape Route: Know where the exits are and how fast you can get to them in your home, school, or office. 4. Tell the Story: Fredericken says if you do end up in a hostile situation, tell the story. He likened it to bathing a cat. “When you try to put your cat in the tub, it becomes very vocal,” he laughs, but he has a point. Yelling and describing what’s happening to you can be the difference between life or death. The overarching theme is simple: “Get home alive.” Krav Maga Indy will be having another, more comprehensive self-defense seminar on October 11.

WALK FOR WOMEN’S LUNG HEALTH AWARENESS Writer / Kara Reibel
On Oct. 18, the American Lung Association is holding an inaugural LUNG FORCE walk to raise awareness for women’s lung health with a focus on lung cancer. “LUNG FORCE is a new initiative to make lung cancer in women a public health priority, to drive policy change and to increase research funding,” says Sheena Lee, Special Events Manager for the American Lung Association in Indiana. Lung cancer is the most deadly form of cancer for women, and prevention is a major part of the cure, but not always. In Carrie Aloisio’s case, she acquired a rare form of lung cancer without ever lifting a cigarette to her mouth, with zero family history, and without being consciously exposed to secondhand smoke or any other known factors. “It began with a cough,” she says. “The cough progressed, and before I knew it, I was having surgery to remove the majority of my right lung.” Her final diagnosis came only after surgery: mucoepidermoid carcinoma. She was 38 years old at the time. Luckily her form of lung cancer is rare, occurring in less than 0.1 percent of all cases and does not require chemotherapy or radiation. The surgery to remove her lung occurred in May of 2013, and as soon as she could, she went back to what she loved: running. adapting to having only one lung, she was learning to walk again and slowly building up her strength. Aloisio was able to run her first half-marathon 11 months later, which occurred in April of this year. “I wanted to finish a race before the one-year mark of my operation,” states Aloisio. “That was my goal and I did it!”

Diane Tetrick came from a family of smokers. Of course they smoked, with a family legacy of tobacco farmers from Kentucky. However,she has never taken a puff, but she had been exposed to secondhand smoke. Her dad died after losing a horrible battle with lung cancer. Tetrick’s sister, Barbara, died on the operating table because of lung cancer; she had been a smoker. Tetrick, now 63 years old, has been in remission for the last two years. The first symptom for Tetrick was also a cough—a nagging one that wouldn’t go away. Having a sister who had just died from lung cancer, she insisted on a CT scan. Two spots were discovered, so portions of each lung were removed, with her family by her side. Marvin, Tetrick’s husband who is retired from GM, and their kids, were there with her throughout the process. Their son, Marty, an Army warrant officer, and their daughter, Mindy, a teacher at Center Grove, are a source of pride and resilience for their parents. A spiritual woman with a strong faith and married 46 years to her high school sweetheart, Tetrick is tough and takes it as it comes—with optimism. And even though she found out that another surgery is required, she is ready. She has staying power and possesses all the signs of a positive outcome. These are only a couple examples of survivor stories. There are plenty of others who are running their own race of sorts. Tetrick has a “team” walking with her at LUNG FORCE. Aloisio does, too. For all runners and walkers, the goal is to cross the finish line. Aloisio wished to recapture that experience. Dick Wolfsie, the jocular word-slinging wizard, has just released his 13th book titled, The Right Fluff: Weightless Observations About Life on Earth. Tuttle Orchards Tuttle Orchards is another crowd pleaser, especially popular during the month of October. You can pick out your family pumpkin, buy Tuttle’s award winning apple cider, and enjoy fun fall activities Monday to Saturday. Special Fall Festival days, scheduled all Saturdays in October and other specified days, offer many activities including a kids’ farm area, an agrimaze, and narrated hayrides around the farm. Thirty years ago, a young Hungarian architectural professor created a wooden toy that was supposed to be impossible to create: a movable cube puzzle that could twist and turn and yet did not break nor fall apart. Erno Rubik created the cube in 1974 to visually explain spatial relationships to his students. He could not have dreamt at the time that he had just invented what would become the most popular toy of all time.

The young compete against adults, often with advantage. Mike and Gloria Hughey have made cubing a family affair, with their daughters competing. The two oldest ones, ages 15 and 13, have attended and competed 38 times. “Our youngest, who is nine, is just getting into cubing,” Hughey says. “It is a great event for our family and I am thrilled the girls have taken interest.”

The international marketing of the Rubik’s Cube would be forever associated with the 1980s. Since that time, competitions are held all over the world under the guidance of the World Cube Association (WCA). One such competition was recently held in Fishers at the Hamilton East Public Library, the Rubik’s Cube Indiana Open 2014. This was an official WCA competition with more than 100 participants coming in from at least 15 states and three countries For additional information, visit cubingusa.com. to take part. For the official designation of a WCA-sanctioned event, a WCA Delegate must be present. Conveniently, a Fishers resident, software developer Mike Hughey, is one of only 20+ WCA Mike Hughey, Rubik’s Delegates in the United States. Cube WCA Delegate When the Rubik’s Cube was unleashed on the world in the early 80s, Hughey was one of those who solved it. “I have always liked puzzles, and the Rubik’s Cube appealed to me,” Hughey says, “but I solved it and that was that.” Hughey later discovered in 2006 the existence of a large community revolving around the Cube. “It was not yet a ‘thing’ when I first solved it,” he says. “Then I realized it was a competitive movement of people timing themselves, and I thought I would like to learn to solve it in under a minute.” The world record is under 15 seconds for the classic 3x3 Rubik’s cube.
Cube, Blindfold Competition
Several years ago, Hughey learned about a new technique for solving the cube: blindfolded. Seems impossible? The participants that I witnessed solving the cubes at the Indiana Open made it look easy. There are cubes of various sizes and shapes, and with a potential of 18 sanctioned competitive events, blindfolded contests are four of the 18 competition possibilities. In a competition, the “puzzle” (as it is officially referred) is presented in an opaque container, and then the puzzle is placed under this container. The judge lifts the basket off of the puzzle for the competitor to study it for 15 seconds.
