Brandon Bennett can still recall suiting up and taking the field during his time in Noblesville’s Babe Ruth baseball league as a kid in the late 1980s. It was during those seasons that Bennett forged enriching relationships with coaches and teammates, learning the importance of teamwork and dedication to a common goal along the way.

“It was one of my favorite sports experiences, and I had some influential coaches,” says Bennett, director of Noblesville’s Parks and Recreation Department. “In my career and life today, I still think about what I learned while playing in the league and still use those lessons.”

The local Babe Ruth league – part of a national non-profit organization founded in 1951 and named, of course, after legendary Major League slugger George Herman “Babe” Ruth – has been providing Noblesville kids aged 13 through 18 with a competitive baseball outlet for more than five decades. The league’s board president, Mike Wasik, says attendance and volunteerism has declined in recent years, but league officials remain dedicated to providing a premier sports experience for Noblesville families.

“Babe Ruth Baseball has such a great history here locally, and at one point over the years the league even threw an annual spring cotillion dance for a while,” Wasik says. “I grew up in Carmel and played baseball until I was 12, and we didn’t have a league after the age of 13. So, reflecting

on my personal experience I can see how important it is for kids to have a league going into their teen years.”

With spring and fall leagues divided up by age into 13-14, 13-15, and 16-18 categories, Wasik says Babe Ruth Baseball fills a niche for kids who are entering their teenage years and interested in local, competitive baseball.

“When kids around here get past age 12, if they don’t start playing travel ball they have no place else to play,” Wasik says. “We are the alternative. It’s good competition for the kids, and we play a 16 to 20-game schedule. It’s also low cost – we don’t have the expenses of the travel leagues.”

Bennett says on average, 70 percent of U.S. kids quit competitive sports by the

age of 13, and he feels the rise in travel baseball leagues over the past 10 to 20 years has also contributed to Noblesville Babe Ruth Baseball’s current struggle to keep participation and volunteer numbers up.

“When I was a kid, we would rake the field and get everything ready with the families, so we had some sweat equity in it,” Bennett says. “You don’t see that as much anymore.”

Wasik, who serves as a Babe Ruth Baseball state commissioner in addition to being board president for the Noblesville league, says families and individuals interested in enrolling their kids or volunteering are encouraged to reach out to members of the league board with questions or to gather information on registration requirements and timelines.

“The 12-to-18 age group is maybe the hardest group to reach, and who knows what some kids at those ages would be doing if they didn’t have a place to go play ball and have fun,” Bennett adds. “So, it offers a lot more than just teaching kids how to hit and throw. From a Parks and Recreation perspective, the league represents everything that we think is important with youth sports, and that is the fact that every kid has a chance to play. To us, that’s what is important.”

There’s a high-end doughnut drought in Noblesville, and Rebellion Doughnuts Co-Owners David Pumphrey and John Manley are ready to flood the city with their delicious new sweet treats to end the dry spell.

“There really is a doughnut hole in the Noblesville market place,” Pumphrey says.

“There aren’t many options to find a high quality product that we are offering. I think customers are going to really go for our doughnuts in a big way.”

Rebellion Doughnuts is located at 17677 Cumberland Road, Noblesville, and is open from 7 a.m. -7 p.m. Sunday-Saturday.

Cindy Hawkins, owner of Circle City Sweets, Indianapolis, developed the recipes for the doughnuts, which will include unique iced offerings such as Lemon Zest and Fat Mint Cookie doughnuts.

“We will also have an iced Bourbon Maple Bacon Doughnut, which is outstanding with real bourbon,” Pumphrey says. “That’s my favorite. I love it. We also have a Nutella Doughnut Shot (Espresso) iced doughnut that people have gone crazy over.”

Pumphrey and Manley have spent a long time with Hawkins perfecting the doughnuts for customers, and Pumphrey believes the extra work to make them just right has paid off.

“Cindy Hawkins is the real deal,” Pumphrey says. “Anyone who has eaten anything from Circle City Sweets knows everything she makes is delicious. She has really outdone herself.”

Pumphrey noted that the name Rebellion Doughnuts came from “one of the many late afternoon power sessions the PumphreyManley mastermind duo are famous for.”

After throwing around words with impact, they found their way to the name Rebellion.

“The name embodies what we intend, and it is also actionable, just as we are,” Pumphrey says.

He also stresses this will not be your average doughnut shop.

“We rebuke the average and mundane,” Pumphrey says. “We rebel against the commercial-grade ingredients, and are instead opting for top quality, natural, artisan-style flavors and rich ingredients.”

They are also rebelling against the norm and are doing everything in their power to veer away from the sickeningly sweet, everyday doughnut.

“What we have created is the doughnut shop for foodies – you can taste the made-from-scratch quality, naturally enriched flavors and delicious texture,” Pumphrey says.

Pumphrey is busy these days. He also works with Manley at their law practice of Manley, Pumphrey & Mann, and their thriving restaurant -Copper Still Kitchen & Bar, 917 Conner Street, Noblesville.

Copper Still has been a huge success, with its large choice of salads, sandwiches and cheeseburgers.

“We have really been fortunate to have a great group of many guests who keep coming back to Copper Still,” Pumphrey says. “They love their favorites and want to come back to get the burger or salad that is just right for them.”

Pumphrey says he and Manley meticulously execute their plan for entering a particular market.

He says he and Manley have spent several years researching doughnut shops, franchises, ingredients and production processes. They have also traveled the country to find the style of doughnut they want to introduce to a particular area.

Pumphrey noted that the Peanut Butter and Jelly Filled Doughnut is outstanding and other filled entrees will include strawberry jelly filled doughnuts, Boston Creams, S’mores, Crème Brûlée and other options.

The cake doughnuts that were being planned (but not confirmed) before Rebellion Doughnuts opened, included Carrot Cake, Blueberry, Buttermilk Sour Cream, Vanilla and Chocolate. The yeast doughnut offerings are vanilla and chocolate yeast.

The Savory doughnuts featured are the Everything (Bagel Topping) Doughnut and the Chicken Doughnut.

“The Everything doughnut is really tasty,” Pumphrey says. “I think people are going be very pleased with all of our choices. We have tried to fill a niche that has needed to be filled, and doughnut lovers are going to be satisfied.”

NEW $6.8M TOM & SONI SHEEHAN BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF NOBLESVILLE CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING

It was over five years in the making. The Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville was seeing incredible growth in the early 2000s. For years the club was servicing local youth in separate locations: the field house at 1700 Conner Street for its sports clubs

and another location for its after school programming. Over five years ago, a vision began to unite these two programs under one local home.

Becky Terry, executive director of the Noblesville Boys & Girls Club, recalls that moment in 2011 when the club began to envision its future home.

“The goal was to get us back on one campus,” Terry says.

The local board soon began planning a vision for how to best serve the youth of Hamilton County. They discussed everything from renovating the existing club or remodeling Conner Elementary. Eventually, the board decided that one campus was the best fit.

“We wanted to stay close to downtown,” Terry says. “We believed building here was our best option.”

With this new plan, the Boys & Girls Club set out to continue its mission: ensuring that children have the opportunity to grow and reach their potential.

“The club is here to provide sports and programming in helping youth reach a bright future,” Terry adds.

So the hard work began. The Boys & Girls Club staff were used to fundraising and writing grants to offset the reasonable 45 dollar annual fee for club members.

The club receives its funding from special events, local charities, summer camps, facility rentals and through the United Way. Its over 2,100 local youth members benefit from the community’s generosity.

“We depend on the community for their support,” Terry says..

And the community again rallied to support this new vision for a single home for the Boys & Girls Club. A team including members of the board, construction workers and local residents worked to design the new facility that would be the club’s new home — the Tom & Soni Sheehan Boys & Girls Club of Noblesville. Soon, a capital campaign kicked off and raised the $6.8 million in funds needed to break ground.

“Our board really knocked that out of the park and got us to our goal,” Terry says. Shovels finally hit the ground in February of 2017: five years after the initial vision.

Steve Meurer, music director for Legacy Bible Church, noted that they have been blessed with fine musicians who have chosen to play great music in worship. Meurer says different groups, organizations and individuals have been very helpful with donations of music, musical instruments and even furniture. “We have received chairs, a piano, choral and instrumental music, books for our library, choir robes, bells and numerous other items that fit in perfectly with what we are doing,” Legacy Bible Church offers men’s Bible studies, women’s Bible studies and Children’s sermons. “We also are reaching out to the community,” Dr. Kunda adds. “We have a mentoring ministry for youth at Pendleton Correctional Facility. We want them to anchor their lives in Jesus Christ. We want them to find purpose and meaning in their lives. Yes, they have done wrong things, but the goal is to help them move toward Jesus Christ.”

Legacy Bible Church also has an indoor pot luck dinner as part of its annual anniversary celebrations and a fall picnic on the church’s beautiful grounds in late summer. Weekly prayer meetings are held every Wednesday at 7 p.m. “I like to call them ‘The Power Plant’ meetings because, similar to a power plant that has energy, our church is powered and run by prayers,” Dr. Kunda says.

Dr. Kunda says that the church has grown through word of mouth, television advertising and their new, revamped website, which launched last month. “We have new members who checked us out on our website and liked what they saw,” Dr. Kunda says. “We’ve had quite a few people tell us, ’I didn’t think I would ever find a church like this again.’ They are committed to this church and they are committed to each other.”

In January, Neal Brown launched his fourth venture, a Japaneseinspired restaurant called Ukiyo.

Even as an adult, it’s wise to listen to your mother. Just ask Neal Brown, who began working in restaurants when he was 14 years old. A 1989 graduate of Noblesville High School, Brown attended Indiana University for a few years, pursuing a degree in marketing with a minor in biology. Though he learned a lot, he wasn’t satisfied with the trajectory of where his career was headed.

“One day I was complaining to my mom about my lack of direction and she said to me, ‘Why don’t you go to cooking school?

You’ve always loved to cook,’” recalls Brown, who days later enrolled in Johnson & Wales College of Culinary Arts. It was a great fit for Brown, who had first developed a taste

for flavorful cuisine when he spent time in Louisiana as a child where he was exposed to some exceptional chefs who made elaborate meals.

“That was the first time I remember thinking, ‘Wow! Cooking is awesome!’”

Following culinary school, his initial plan was to move to either Chicago or New York, but after working in downtown Indy at the California Café, he realized that maybe he’d be better off staying in Indianapolis.

In 2009, Brown opened Pizzology, a craft pizzeria with a farm-to-table concept where all ingredients are made in-house, including their dough, sausage and cheese. A year later, he launched the Libertine Liquor Bar —Indy’s first cocktail-centric bar and

restaurant that focuses on local and seasonal American food.

“I loved the idea that cocktails were being elevated to this place where chefs had been toiling for a long time,” Brown says.

“People started to take interest in this idea that a cocktail didn’t just have to be a twoingredient thing you pour into a glass. It could offer nuance with some real thought behind it.”

Brown has been nominated two times for the prestigious James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Midwest Region. In addition, Esquire Magazine named the Libertine one of the 25 best bars in America.

“It’s really wine-friendly food — braised meat with lots of vegetables and seafood,” Brown says. “I love the idea of sitting seaside and drinking wine while enjoying delicious old-world food. It’s such a vivid, romantic image.”

At Stella, the food Brown is most proud of is something he suspects the vast majority take for granted — the half chicken they cook for 15 minutes in an open-wood fired oven.

“It comes out perfect, and that’s not easy to do,” Brown says. “In fact, there are a lot of great chefs who, when hiring a new cook, will put them to the test by asking them to roast a chicken because it’s a very

technically challenging thing to do.”

In January 2018, Brown launched a fourth venture — this one a Japaneseinspired restaurant called Ukiyo that relies heavily on area farmers, foragers, beekeepers and artisans.

“I pair the meals with wine, saké or cocktails,” Brown says. “It’s a very intimate experience — just me and the guest across from the sushi bar.”

“I spent five and a half years working as a sushi chef,” Brown says. “Ukiyo is rekindling interest in Japanese culture and cuisine.”

His favorite thing is doing reservation-only Omakase, which is a meal consisting of dishes selected by the chef. In Japanese, “omakase” means “I’ll leave it to you.”

Stella, which means “star” in Italian, is located on a five-way intersection. Ukiyo in its traditional sense in Zen Buddhism means “to be mindful,” and since this restaurant is all about mindful cooking, the name seemed appropriate.

“The libertines were very educated people who liked to party,” Brown says. “I chose the name “The Libertine Liquor Bar” because I liked the idea that there was sophistication coupled with this wild mentality.”

As for Pizzology?

“I chose that because all the other pizza names were taken,” Brown says with a chuckle.

Though Brown says he occasionally contemplates what might have been had he followed through with his original plan of moving to the Windy City or the Big Apple, he has no regrets.

“I have a great group of people who have been with me for a long time,” Brown says.

“And honestly, watching them mature as professionals is so rewarding.”

Brown and his wife Lindy (who does most of the cooking at home) have two children: Isabelle (17) and Greyson (10) and a hound dog named Duke. Brown adores his home life but admits that he doesn’t live a balanced lifestyle.

“Being a chef and a restaurateur is both challenging and exhausting as there are times when I work 15 or 16-hour days,” says Brown, who notes that in his free time he likes to go to the gym to work out, play basketball with his son and search for new recipes on his phone.

“I don’t take my wife on dates as often as I should, and I don’t play with my dog as much as I should,” Brown says. “But for me, work is fun.”

As for future plans, Brown, the “consummate entrepreneur,” struggles to say no when someone asks him to look at a new restaurant site or consider another restaurant concept.

“I’ve always got stuff in the pipeline,” he says. “Whether it’s a viable option is another question.”

If in doubt, he can always ask his mother for her sage opinion.

It’s no secret that mom does most of the heavy lifting during pregnancy, but she needs support from her partner. What are the best ways to do that? Find out with these tips from Drs. Jeffrey and Leigh Meltzer, husband and wife duo, parents of three girls, and OB-GYNs at Indiana University Health North Hospital.

MY PARTNER AND I JUST FOUND OUT WE’RE EXPECTING! HOW CAN I BEST SUPPORT HER THROUGH THE PREGNANCY? Dr. Leigh: It’s important to play an active role in the pregnancy long before your partner delivers. Childbirth education classes teach you how to hold and swaddle a newborn, change their diapers, burp them and soothe them. Take initiative on projects you can lead such as childproofing the home and preparing the car seat, crib, basinet and diaper bag.

Dr. Leigh: Avoid doing anything that increases your partner’s anxiety during this time. Specifically, avoid making any travel plans close to the delivery day or bringing up hypothetical, worst-case-scenarios. Let your partner lead these conversations if she chooses to bring them up.

Dr. Jeffrey: Make prenatal and ultrasound appointments a priority.

Before the delivery, sit down with your partner to map out a birth plan, and talk

Dr. Jeffrey: Remember, dads, in the weeks leading up to the delivery, moms might be uncomfortable, might not be sleeping well and might even be anxious about how the labor process will go. Be extra helpful and supportive during this time.

HOW CAN I BE SUPPORTIVE DURING THE DELIVERY PROCESS? Dr. Leigh: This depends on your partner.

Some women want space and others want their partners involved in every contraction. Sometimes this changes through the labor process. Be sensitive to your partner’s body language and what she says. Offer to rub her back during labor, time the contractions, or walk with her to the labor ball or rocking chair.

Avoid over-empathizing and saying things like “you’re fine” or “it’s almost over.”

Just remember to be available, loving and compassionate. I think that’s all we could ask of our partners!

Dr. Jeffrey: It’s helpful for partners to know what to expect during labor, so make sure you’ve done your research before entering the delivery room. Prenatal classes can teach you how to help your partner stay comfortable. Men often like to fix things, and this is a case in which we can’t do that, but prenatal classes will help you learn techniques to help. Remember to be your partner’s advocate. Does she need a break from visitors? Does she need a refill on ice chips? Help her communicate her wishes to the labor and delivery team.

Owner, Mike Broshears started BAM Outdoor in 1999.

“If a client were to call in about a landscape project, they would call the office, and then it would be sent to one of the landscape design people,” Broshears says. “The landscape design person would contact them back. They’d set up an appointment and go out and meet with them, listen to them, go through their project and assist them in any ideas by doing design. Then, they’d sign the contract, and we’d provide the service and workmanship.”

Over the years, Broshears has made sure to treat his employees right to make sure BAM Outdoor maintains their level of expertise.

“We want retention,” Broshears says. “We want to be able to retain our employees long-term, and also the clients and the customers. That’s where the service and the relationship come in.”

With all of this in mind, he also wants to make sure that BAM Outdoor continues to grow at an organic rate too.

“Contained growth is a big thing,” Broshears says. “We want to be able to provide the service and quality that I expect, and that our customers have grown accustomed to.”
