oung artists will have the opportunity to try their hands at a variety of art projects this summer at the Hamilton North Public Library. Deanna Leonard, owner of Arcadian Design, will be teaching the classes every Wednesday starting June 11 until mid-July for an optional one- to twohour class, starting at 11 a.m. Students will have the opportunity to work on paintings, tie-dyes, stepping stones, paper making, and weaving.

“I enjoy working with children because they are a clean slate, so to speak,” Leonard said.

“They don’t have those barriers that adults tend to put on themselves, so they are pretty open when I introduce a project. They do the things that are necessary to be creative, even opening up to their own creativity.

They may have never done something or worked with a medium before, and they get excited about it.”

“We will be re-purposing silverware,” Leonard said. “We will also be painting with things we find in nature and doing bubble art—lots of outside activities.”

Students will be separated into different age groups ranging from 6-14 years old.

Leonard and an assistant will work with them on their projects, and they will also have time to show and discuss their projects with the class at the end. The cost of the class is $10 per hour per student.

For Leonard, the classes often reflect her own interests. She owns an interior design company and provides many artistic services, including the booth spaces she rents at Whimzy and Logan Village Mall in Noblesville, where shoppers can find her furniture and vintage and homemade crafts.

She said the children’s art classes allow her to even foster skills outside the art realm.

“Communication skills are pretty important to this even though it doesn’t seem like that would be associated with art,” Leonard said.

“Self confidence, alongside walking away with something beautiful to display in your home or something you can say you created, are really important.”

RAIL EPICUREAN MARKET DEBUTS IN WESTFIELD Writer & Photographer / Jane VanOsdol

A combination field-to-fork European-style market and family-friendly cafe is one of the newest businesses hoping to capitalize on the Westfield, Indiana expansion. Rail Epicurean Market is the creation of husband and wife team Toby and Melanie Miles. The two didn’t have to look far for inspiration.

Toby’s love of the markets in his native England and Melanie’s dream of providing a venue for local food artisans proved to be a perfect match. Combining their business and creative skills, they opened shop in April 2014 at the refurbished bright red barn tucked onto Park Street two blocks southwest of State Road 32 and US Highway 31.

Melanie’s interest in the local food movement began in May 2012 with her own line of organic jams and jellies, called Preservation. She first featured her products at farmers’ markets and switched to wholesaling in 2013. Not your averageJoe flavors, her popular line includes kiwi pineapple jam, hibiscus jelly, banana butter, blueberry rhubarb jam, strawberry balsamic jam, and caramelized pear and black pepper jam. “Black pepper jam sounds odd, but this one I like to use over brie or on roasted pork. People just love it,” Melanie said.

With the success of her Preservation line, Melanie and Toby decided to pursue their dream and fortunately found the location on Park Street with enough room for both a commercial kitchen and a cafe.

SPOTLIGHT LOCAL VENDORS The Mileses feel strongly about promoting community vendors and currently carry products from about 40 mostly local food artisans. Toby points out that what the vendors do is an art form. “They treat it [food] like a sculptor would treat a piece of stone or a painter would treat a canvas,” he said.

Indeed, the results have attracted a loyal following as customers seek out the Rail Epicurean Market for favorite products that include peanut butter, coffee, honey, meats, dairy, condiments, beer, and wine, just to name a few things.

EUROPEAN-STYLE CAFE The cafe features pastries, coffee, sandwiches, soups, and salads—handmade by Melanie and Toby every morning in time for grab-and-go purchases or to be enjoyed at the rustic cafe that has both indoor and outdoor seating.

(Free Internet is available for those who want to work or just browse the Web.) One

must-try is Melanie’s Southern Fruit Tea, a concoction containing sweet tea, pineapple juice, and orange juice with a touch of lemon.

The Rail hosts special pop-up dinners four times a month in an intimate communal setting that can accommodate 14 people. April’s menu was a prix fixe meal (set menu with set price) made up of four courses: an appetizer, salad, entrée, and dessert, with each course paired with a different wine. Be sure to get reservations early in the month, as space is limited.

FUTURE PLANS The Mileses are excited to be located in the middle of the Westfield expansion. Just catty-corner to them is the land that will become Grand Junction Park and Plaza.

Toby and Melanie envision special nights at the Rail, hosting a music-in-the-round event with an open mic. People could wander in and out as they please, enjoying a drink and listening to the music. Eventually they want to add a deck on the back with beer gardens, wine, and charcuterie boards.

Overall, the duo couldn’t be more pleased with their new business. ”We live in downtown Westfield, and we want this to be a community place…. Our lives are invested in this community,” said Melanie.

SKIER DOWN FLAG Writer / Deirdre Gengenbach, Fishers, IN

The skier down marker is bright orange flag (at least 12x12 inches) on a short handle. When raised from a boat, it indicates that there is a skier (or boarder or tuber) down in the water in the area. It is used when a skier is in the water separated from the boat because he or she is either preparing to take off, has fallen, or dropped.

Why is it important? Skiers (or boarders or tubers) floating in the water separated from a boat are hard to see—especially on a rough-water or cloudy day. With the flag, the spotter can alert other boaters that there is someone in the area in the water.

It is not a requirement of the Indiana DNR to use one. Some states, and some Indiana lakes, may require use of one (at least in the past, Lake Sweetwater and Heritage Lake have required the use of this flag). Geist does not. So why do we use one? My husband and I

were passengers on a boat at Lake Monroe that accidently ran over a downed skier. The skier survived but was severely injured. With a skier down flag alert, that terrible accident may have been prevented.

As a parent of children who like to tube, ski, and board, I am very sensitive to the dangers to boaters and skiers on our lake. I have personally witnessed (and I am sure you have too), boaters texting while driving, boaters pulling skiers without spotters, and boaters following very close in the wake of a boat pulling a skier.

I am not suggesting that everyone on Geist should use one, but I do want everyone who sees one to know what it means. If you see a bright orange flag held up on a boat, be alert for a skier down in the area.

If you are interested in using a skier down flag, you can purchase one almost anyplace that sells boating or skiing supplies. They run between $3 and $9.

Will it be cowboy hats and boots, black T-shirts and jeans, or coconut bras and leis that don your arrival at Klipsch Music Center this summer? Are camping for Dave Matthews and date night for ZBB (Zac Brown Band) or Luke Bryan marked on your calendar, as well? The 2014 concert season is underway for yet another spectacular and diverse lineup that gets many area residents’ heart rates aflutter this time of year. stomping, hip-shaking talent of acts like Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw and Lady A, to name a few. Camping at Klipsch will be offered for the two-day Luke Bryan event in late August. The season will round out in September with Toby Keith and the resonant sound of Dierks Bentley.

Morse and Geist reservoirs played host to the Indiana Bass Federation’s “Top 8” tournament the last weekend of April. Eight fishermen from 11 teams fished from 7 a.m. until weigh-in at 3 p.m. to find the largest bass in Morse and Geist reservoirs.

“A lot of these guys are weekend anglers that are probably some of the best fishermen in the world,” said Todd Hollowell, a professional fisherman who hosts _Bass Dr._ on the World Fishing Network. ( The show airs at 10:30 a.m. Fridays and 8:30 a.m. Saturdays.)

Fishermen launched their bass boats at sunrise and matched up in a boat with a member of an opposing team. After receiving final instructions from the tournament organizer, they set out at 7 a.m. sharp to catch up to five bass at least 14 inches in length. At 3 p.m., they convened at the marina ramp for weigh-in with the hope of catching the most total weight.

Dan Wise, a Geist Marina employee and Top 8 tournament director, organized and was host to the 88 competitors. He is a member of the Fall Creek Valley Bassmasters, this year’s winning team.

“Our guys come from all walks of life,” he explained. “They love to compete and take fishing seriously.”

On the first day of the tournament, Shane Rees snagged a bass weighing 8.17 lbs. on Morse Reservoir.

“That’s the biggest bass I’ve ever seen out of Morse,” Wise said. “It might be one of the biggest ever caught in Indiana.”

Rees ended up finishing in fifth place overall with 17.61 lbs. of fish.

On the final day at Geist, Craig Rogers caught a bass weighing 6.46 lbs., which catapulted him to fourth place overall in the standings with 18.26 lbs. of fish.

The overall winner was Josh McDermott of Fishers. He came in with 28.06 lbs., four pounds more than second-place finisher Jeff Wehner (24.05 lbs.).

“I just fished shallow all day and moved around to cover a lot of water,” McDermott said. “I love these conditions where I can stay along the shorelines and not have to go out into the open water.”

McDermott and nine others will go on to the Indiana state finals July 19–20 at Patoka Lake. If they keep winning, qualifiers progress all the way to the “World Series” of bass fishing: the Forrest Wood Cup, Aug. 14–17 in Columbia, South Carolina.

CALLING ALL VENDORS: CICERO FARMER’S MARKET ON THE LAKE Writer / Jane VanOsdol

If it were up to Gregg Boyd, Saturday, June 14 would be a picture-perfect morning with a crowd of vendors and shoppers gathered for the opening of the Cicero Farmer’s Market on the Lake. Boyd is neither lacking in tenthusiasm nor vision for the market.

What he is lacking is vendors.

Being that the market was just recently approved by the town board, he’s hopeful they’ll soon have a crowd of people ready to sell their produce and other wares at the market.

MAGIC NUMBERZ

The magic number is 20—that is, 20 vendors needed to sign up in order to hold the market, but they have room for a total of 45. With the idea just a few weeks old, they already have five signed up. Boyd would like to see a variety of products at the market.

“We’re hopeful to have the traditional vegetables and crops, and then we’ve also had calls from people with handcrafted

items and outdoor furniture, too,” he said.

Those interested in being a vendor or who would like to volunteer to help run the market should send an email to info@ lazyfrogg.com. The market will run from 7:30 a.m.-11 a.m.

Compared to many of the other local markets, the Cicero market has some of the most accommodating vendor rules around.

Here’s the rundown:

LOW COST. The Cicero Farmer’s Market on the Lake is being sponsored by the new Lazy Frogg on Lake Cicero restaurant, so they will be covering many of the costs. Vendors will pay only $19 per Saturday, which covers insurance, trash removal, and a few other items.

NO CONTRACT. Vendors can sign up one week and then not the next. Spots are based upon availability, first come, first served. If you do sign up for an entire month, then the balance of the summer is half price or $10 per week.

PARKING IS PROVIDED. Merchants and shoppers can park in the Lazy Frogg’s parking lot.

GREAT LOCATION. The market is at 409 Jackson Street in Cicero (at the Lazy Frogg), right on the water. The new bridge/boardwalk across the lake will be ready in June, and it will end directly at the market.

PITCH IN. Vendors need to come early to help with the set-up and stay to help with the tear-down.

TENTS. A few vendor tents will be provided, but organizers are also looking for vendors to bring some as well.

Boyd believes the market will have a wide appeal. “It’s meant to be an activity for families to do together on a Saturday morning,” he said. “You won’t want to miss it.”

Kyle Spencer’s dream was to farm, although raising beans and corn wasn’t appealing.

His decision to grow fruits and veggies on about 32 acres at Spencer Farm, 7177 E. 161st St., gets two green thumbs-up from anyone who frequents Noblesville’s only U-pick farm.

The 31-year-old business offers in-season asparagus, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, chrysanthemums, pumpkins, gourds and pre-cut Christmas trees.

Kyle and wife Lori have a fruitful, but not easy, life.

“A U-pick farm is a lot more work than you might think,” said Lori. “We’re constantly weeding, all by hand.”

There’s planting and pruning, and the gift shop must be stocked with baked goods, kitchen items and Indiana produce. The open sign hangs at Spencer’s from noon-7 p.m.

Sundays, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Work slows in the off-season but doesn’t stop.

Market are can’t-miss experiences, said Renee Oldham. She directs Noblesville Main Street, Inc., which coordinates both markets.

The smaller, Euro-style Thursday Market is open 5-8 p.m. Thursdays through Sept.

18. It’s tucked into the Conner Street alley between 8th and 9th streets but it’s easy to find: Listen for the music or follow the tantalizing smells of ready-to-enjoy foods.

Oldham doesn’t play favorites when it comes to market vendors. “I like them all,” she said, praising the wide selection of produce, fresh food items, baked goods, BBQ, egg rolls, TexMex, wine and art.

A food court has been added to the older and more traditional Farmers Market (8-noon Saturdays through Oct. 14 at Ind. 32 and 19), where 85 vendors sell an abundance of produce, bedding plants, fresh-cut flowers, honey, handmade items and baked goods.

“Come hungry, because there’s so much great food,” suggests Oldham, calling the market a pet-friendly, social gathering. “Make time to experience it. If you come at 8, there will still be things to see and activities at noon. Once your car is loaded up, come downtown for lunch and to support more local businesses.”

FIRST-TIME PICKER? FOLLOW LORI’S TIPS: • Strawberries are most plentiful a week after picking starts. For large quantities of those juicy shortcake toppers, go the second or third week of June.

• Crowds are smaller in the afternoons, “but it’s hotter then,” she reminded.

• Take sunscreen and a kneeling pad. Fruit isn’t made in the shade, and it grows close to the ground.

• Biggest isn’t always best. Like Tiffany’s little blue boxes, small berries are often sweetest.
