MORSE LAKE CLEAN-UP Writer / by Jim Schneider

Each year the Morse Waterways Association helps in advance of the Cicero Triathlon to clean up the swimming entry point for the triathletes, which is located at the town boat docks. On Saturday, May 31, the association, along with a few Hamilton North Chamber of Commerce members, gathered for a morning of hard physical labor. Tree branches, stumps, twigs and garbage had to be carried from the Cicero town boat docks up the stairs and ramp to a trailer, and hauled away.

The Cicero triathlon is a showcase event for our community and a good impression is necessary to ensure that participants come back the following year. This year, 22 volunteers worked from 8-11:30 on

Saturday and hauled two large trailer loads of tree debris plus six bags of garbage.

These town docks are important to the town of Cicero, since they are the water entry point to the town. Many boaters use the docks and then go to dinner at a local restaurant or grab an ice cream from Alexander’s. At the end of June this area will become more visible once the new pedestrian walkway over the reservoir is completed, which will connect the east and west sides of the town.

On July 12, Morse Waterways Association will be holding a larger lake cleanup to pull trees and logs from the reservoir, along with another cleanup of the dock area. Please come out and help our community. We will meet at Red Bridge Park at 8 a.m.

BEECHLER NAMED HEIGHTS’ TEACHER OF THE YEAR Writer / Peggy Georgi

Hamilton Heights School Corporation is pleased to announce that Emily Beechler has been selected as its Teacher of the Year.

Beechler, who serves as the Media Specialist at Hamilton Heights Middle School, was among four outstanding professionals from the school district nominated as the top pick for their building for 2013-14.

Beechler will be among those individuals from throughout the state in consideration for Indiana’s Teacher of the Year Award and will represent Hamilton Heights at the Teacher of the Year awards ceremony in October.

“Emily is a problem-solver, an innovator, and a dynamic member of our Middle School family,” explained Elizabeth Wright, Principal, Hamilton Heights Middle School.

“Her enthusiasm, love, and passion for education have hardly a rival on our staff… and we have an incredible faculty here at HHMS.” Wright went on to say that Beechler does not work or serve for awards or accolades, but simply to inspire and impact all those

Beechler began her career at Heights as a 5th grade teacher in 2000. After three years she moved to 6th grade English and became the English department head at the middle school. She held that position for six years, and in 2009, became the media specialist. “I have been doing this job for five years and I absolutely love it,” says Beechler of the role that allows her the unique opportunity to work with all students each year. “I get to see them grow and mature as students, as readers and as people. Few staff members get that chance. I also get to work with almost every staff member, from co-teaching, to planning, to providing support.”

Andrea Sayers has been with Hamilton Heights School Corporation since she graduated from college in 1997. Sixteen of those years were spent as a 2nd grade teacher. She just completed her first year as a 3rd grade teacher at Hamilton Heights Elementary. “Andrea embraced many of the targeted instructional strategies that were presented last year and embedded them in her daily instruction,” said Keith Ecker, Principal, Hamilton Heights Primary School.

ATLANTA BECOMES HOME FOR REYNOLDS FARM EQUIPMENT Writer / Krista Shields

As Reynolds Farm Equipment approaches its 60-year anniversary, they aren’t slowing down. In fact, the new location in Atlanta is set to hold its grand opening in late August. The store officially opened its doors in January.

The company, with nearly 250 employees, recently moved its headquarters to 1451 East 276th Street to a 62,700-square-foot building where it employs 90 workers.

“We are in a great location for our customers,” Marketing Manager Erica Evans said. “The convenience of being located off US 31 and the fact that we have a parts, service and sales department is a great benefit for this prominent agricultural area.”

Evans mentioned that the new facility, which is in the old location of Buckaroo Boot Company, also services Kokomo, Atlanta, Tipton, and Sheridan areas and

carries John Deer, Stihl, Honda, and Valley Irrigation lines. The Sheridan store location was closed in anticipation of the new Atlanta building.

The facility is also providing another service: breakfast and lunch. The Combine Cafe opened in April and provides homestyle cooking Monday though Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Breakfast is served until 11 a.m. with special $2 menu items.

“We have anything from biscuits and gravy to chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast and club sandwiches to hamburgers for lunch,” Evans said. “We also have daily specials. I would describe the food as having a country feel.”

The down-home appeal doesn’t stop at the food: the company is still family-owned and operated after three generations. A.W. ‘Mac’ and Arline Reynolds opened the first store

in Fishers, Indiana in 1955. The Fishers location housed the headquarters until recently and has become synonymous with its Christmas lighting display, which will remain in Fishers. The new Atlanta location will not include a Christmas light display, according to Evans.

There are seven immediate family members working for the company and most are now at the Atlanta location. Also, the corporate managers will now be in one central location.

Reynolds Farm Equipment has expanded to six stores in Anderson, Atlanta, Fishers, Lebanon, Mooresville and Muncie and two golf and turf stores in Xenia, Ohio and Nicholasville, Kentucky.

THIS IS MY FRIEND TERRY AND I AM HIS SENSEI

I

t was a Tuesday night after a long Memorial Day weekend and I was watching television, flipping back and forth between America’s Got Talent and a baseball game. Unfortunately, the Dodgers were beating the Reds, so I spent most of my evening watching the “talent show on steroids” premier episode. That’s when a 20-something kid came out and said, “My name is Dustin’s Dojo and I’m a trained black belt and I learned to be a black belt at Roger Baker’s Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida.”

He took a bow with his silent sidekick who was wearing a ski mask “This is my friend Terry and I am his sensei,” he added, followed by a roar of laughter from the audience.

Over the course of the next five minutes I witnessed the funniest karate parody I’ve ever seen. Dustin’s Dojo put on a demonstration featuring the breaking of flimsy wood slats, 60 seconds of full-extension punches, and a face full of salt thrown into his eyes by Terry “when he least expected it.” Comedy genius was rewarded with a golden buzzer save by judge Howard Stern, which allowed them to go to the next round in New York this July.

I rewound the skit, watched it with my wife several times, and posted a link of the clip on my Facebook wall the following morning, noting, “This was the hardest I’ve laughed in a long time.”

Then something magical happened. One of my Facebook friends left a comment that Terry Terry was his wife’s cousin from the Indy area. These guys are locals? I had to meet them.

So we headed west with a carload of people: our trusty videographer Mitch Jacki, and magazine designers and fans Alyssa Sander and Austin Vance. Our rendezvous spot was in Covington, Indiana at the famous Beef House Restaurant in their back parking lot.

From there, Dustin’s Dojo and Terry Terry took us to two of their training locations in Fountain County: The “snake pit” and the “road that leads down to the river.”

Dustin’s Dojo, donning his WWE Santino Marella t-shirt, treated us to an on-camera, in-character interview. He told us about his karate inspirations, being bullied in 3rd grade and roundhouse kicking his nemesis in the ear, the ever-presence of attackers and what they would do with the $1 million grand prize should they win America’s Got Talent. “We would build the Roger Baker Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida, Fountain County.”

Off camera, Dustin Britton (Dustin’s Dojo) and Ed Kent (Terry Terry) talked about their backgrounds and the events that led up to their premier. They met through their church, where Britton is the youth minister.

was doing auditions in Indianapolis, they came up with these two characters and fleshed out the skit on the drive over to the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

“We were in character all day long,” said Britton. “The producers didn’t know what to think of us. At the end of the day, I broke down and laughed when he questioned my ‘world record’ for full extension punches thrown in 60 seconds.

Their act is like watching Napoleon Dynamite trying to understudy Bruce Lee. Dustin’s Dojo speaks loudly, as if you’ll believe him if he says it with pronounced authority. Terry Terry, whose name is a spoof on local horror movie host Sammy Terry, looks around aimlessly, trying to spot attackers. “Only locals would get the Sammy Terry reference,” Kent said with a laugh.

With their newfound fame, Britton has created a website at DustinsDojo.com where he posts exercise videos, karate demonstrations and merchandise including a “Roger Baker’s Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida” t-shirt.

As for America’s Got Talent, the two will be making their second-round appearance sometime in July. Be sure to watch on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. for their New York debut.

INDIANA’S NEW SECOND CHANCE LAW Writer / Mario Massillamany

We all make mistakes in our youth.

Sometimes even as adults. Luckily for us, the Indiana General Assembly just revised the expungement laws (Indiana Code 35-5-5.5 and 35-38-8, 9) to give Hoosiers a second chance. The Legislature understood that old arrests and convictions can prevent you from getting a job, renting an apartment, serving in the military, or participating in service groups. Known as the “Second Chance Law,” the new law allows for sealing arrest records and expunging certain convictions.

SEALING PRIOR ARRESTS

Sometimes a person will get arrested but the charges will be dismissed due to mistaken identity, not committing the crime, or lack of evidence. But those arrests still appear in that person’s record. Under the new law, if you were arrested but never convicted of the crime charged, you can have the arrest sealed one year later. This can be vital for future employment, as the arrest will not appear in a background check, nor would you need to disclose the arrest on a job application.

EXPUNGING YOUR RECORD

If you were convicted of a misdemeanor or Class D Felony that was reduced to a misdemeanor (AMS), you can petition the court for an expungement five years after the conviction. For D Felony convictions that did not result in a bodily injury, the waiting period is eight years from the date of conviction.

If you have multiple convictions that qualify, you must expunge them at the same time. If your convictions occurred in the same county, you can file them under one petition. If they are from multiple counties in Indiana, you must file separately in each county. There are no filing fees for sealing records but there is a $141 state civil filing fee for expunging convictions.

Undoubtedly you’ve seen or heard about the newest restaurant at Hamilton Town Center. Everybody is trying to get to Chuy’s for some Tex-Mex food. The question is…does Chuy’s live up to the hype?

Straight from Austin, Texas, this chain restaurant brings a funky new Tex-Mex addition to the typical Mexican restaurants here in Central Indiana.

From the moment you walk in, you’ll imagine you’re visiting the Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. With its vibrant colors and whimsical Mexican artwork, Chuy’s just feels like a fiesta! And that certainly caught your Girls About Town’s attention. Whether it’s the Nacho Car Bar on the immediate left, the main dining area with its forest of palm trees created and hand-painted by an artist from Belize, or the quaint outside patio with Tejano music playing in the background, you’ll want to sit back, relax, and order up some margaritas.

Surprise, surprise: we started in the bar. We loved the Elvis-inspired 1950s car (yes, it is actually a car) stuffed full of tortilla chips and salsas. Its self-serve style makes it easy to scoop up extra chips…and nobody will know. Even better, from 4-7 p.m. daily, the Nacho Car Bar really revs up during happy hour, serving ground beef, refried beans, warm chili con queso and an abundance of salsas and chips for an unparalleled nacho experience you won’t find anywhere else… and it’s free! The walls are decorated with colorful art and framed pictures of cute dogs; you can even bring in your own poochie pic for display. TVs surround the room as well, so diners are sure not to miss their favorite sporting event. Our waiter automatically brought us the Salsa Fresca and then happily explained all the other seven different sauces available to go with dinners and our ultra-thin tortilla chips.

They’re all spice-meter ranked on the menu, from mild to medium to hot, so you know what you’re getting into before they dish it out. Both of us really enjoyed trying the different sauces and ultimately settled in with our favorites, with Rachel preferring the Creamy Jalapeño, and Chalene preferring the Salsa Fresca. It’s made fresh every hour and is amazing…like the kind you probably make at home.

When we opened the menu to order some beverages, we were taken aback by the selection and ingenuity of margarita styles. We were impressed with their freshness. Every margarita here is made with fresh-squeezed lime juice, and premium tequilas are in no short supply. You’ll love Chuy’s Famous Ritas, served on the rocks, frozen, strawberry, or “swirl and dot.” You can also try the not-tomiss Texas Martini, made to order with the tequila of your choice— ”all shook up, not stirred”—and served with jalapeño-stuffed olives.

As fun and impressive as the decor, bar, and margaritas are, la estrella real is the food. (That’s the “real star,” for all you gringos.)

fresh they don’t even have a freezer in the kitchen. It’s all made from scratch daily, and you can definitely taste the difference. This place is Tex-Mex heaven! The Appetizer Plate, chock-full of everything from guacamole to flautas and quesadillas, was awesome and more than filled us, but that didn’t stop us from over-indulging with some off-the-hook entrees. The fajitas made with real beef skirt steak and whole chicken breasts are marinated for 24 hours in a signature blend of Shiner Bock beer, serrano peppers, lime juice and special spices. The Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom enchiladas are a Chuy’s original with the chicken roasted daily and hand-pulled for an exceptional enchilada that’s topped with green chile chipotle sauce.

Hailing from their Texas roots and velvet artwork at the original Chuy’s location is another original creation, Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken. Looking for something to do over the long, 4th of July weekend? Take a drive (or train) to Cicero for the annual Lights Over Morse Lake (LOML) Festival, July 4-6. Besides Morse Lake being the absolute best place in Hamilton County to watch fireworks, the Festival offers lots of great activities for the whole family!

The LOML committee has been hard at work selecting new attractions for the 2014 Festival. Some new events include the Animal Oasis Petting Zoo & Pony Rides, Galloway’s Zip Line Adventures, Caboose Rides by the Indiana Transportation Museum, the Pacers Fan Van and Colts in Motion, a 42-foot long traveling museum, full of interactive Colt’s history and memorabilia, and the “Get Off Your Can” 5K Run/Walk.

If you have a golf cart, stop by the annual Golf Cart Poker Run, on Saturday, July 5. Registration is at 9 AM and the poker run starts at 10 AM at the Cicero Fire Department (1359 Stringtown Pike, Cicero). Cost is $20 per player (one poker hand). Arrive early and enjoy a delicious meal at the Cicero Kiwanis Community Breakfast from 8 – 10:30 AM. Then, drive your golf cart to the many stops around

town and get a chance to win prizes for the best poker hand or best decorated cart!

Cicero Christian Church (1715 Stringtown Pike, Cicero) is sponsoring both the Kids Carnival and the popular Balloon Glow.

Balloonists from around the Midwest will be showing off their hot air balloons for a beautiful display after sunset (around 7 PM) on Sunday, July 6. Sit and relax on the lawn or visit each of the balloons for an up close and personal experience.

Don’t forget your camera for great photo opportunities! There will also be carnival games for the kids at the Balloon Glow from 6 – 8 PM and at Community Park on Friday and Saturday.

“Stella Luna & the Satellites” will be in concert at the Hamilton North Public Library Outdoor Pavilion (209 W. Brinton St., Cicero) on July 5 at 7:30 PM. “Stella Luna & the Satellites”, a popular Indianapolis band, plays a unique blend of rock, country, pop, R&B, blues, funk, reggae, and folk music. The next night, on July 6, we’ll feature “Jeremy Morris and Harvest Road Band” at 5 PM at the outdoor pavilion. Sponsored by the Cicero Friends of the Park, “Jeremy Morris & the Harvest Road Band” plays hard driving, up-tempo bluegrass.

And last, but not least, the FIREWORKS! Enjoy the fireworks as they are shot from a barge in the middle of Morse Lake, close to Red Bridge Park and the Jackson Street Bridge. The fireworks start at approximately 10 PM and are truly an experience not to be missed!
