Prior to this endeavor, Vangoor worked in the consulting field for 25 years. Though the restaurant industry is completely different, he insists that his life is about the same.

Non-vegetarian entrees include Gongura Curry, which comes with a bone-in choice of meat cooked with gongura leaves - a South Indian delicacy, and also Tikka Masala, tender boneless choice of meat cooked in a rich tomato sauce, cream and spices. There’s also the Karaikudi Curry, prepared with a choice of meat, sautéed, and cooked with coconut milk and spices in a chettinad style.

“My wife and I cook every day at home anyway, so now we just cook on a larger scale,” he says.

The restaurant is famous for a wide variety of biryanis, and customers also love the soups, appetizers, breads and sides. The desserts include Gulab Jamun, which are soft dumplings dipped in rose water and sugar syrup, as well as Rasmalai, including homemade soft milk patties dipped in sweet condensed milk and pistachio.

The eatery’s vegetarian appetizers include deep-fried Gobi, marinated in spicy batter, Masakali, consisting of deep-fried veggies cooked with special aromatic spices, and

Not surprisingly, a considerable percentage of people opted for takeout during the pandemic. As COVID-19 numbers decline, Vangoor suspects inperson dining will continue to increase.

The seating capacity is 105, although with COVID-19 they have reduced it to 72 and moved tables, to distance customers and make it more spacious. They have also constructed small walls to provide privacy.

Santa Spirit

Did you know that we actually have Santas living right here in our neighborhoods?

Yes, the spirit of Santa (or at least his helpers) is alive and well in Louisville.

What inspires these men to take on this persona? What joy do they derive from dressing up in a red and white fur suit, listening to Christmas wishes shared by hundreds and hundreds of children?

We’ll begin our story with Santa Michael (last name omitted) in La Grange. You might have seen him zipping around town in his little red car.

He began his journey 10 years ago during a recuperation period after undergoing

shoulder surgery. He grew out a white beard during his downtime, which caught the eye of his Santa friend at church.

“He asked me to cover for him one night, and I was hooked,” he says.

He is originally from the west coast, having grown up in Orange County, California.

That is where his earliest memories of seeing Santa stem from.

“I remember getting our annual photo with Santa, but only from seeing the photos,” he explains.

After he and his wife Laura, who portrays Mrs. Claus, were married, they would visit Disneyland each year for Christmas to visit Santa.

“Disneyland really knows how to do DECEMBER 2021 / 11

Christmas,” he says.

He’s had quite a busy schedule during the holiday season. He averages about 80 visits per season, but last year his appearances were down some due to the pandemic.

“I do all events from preschools to senior citizens homes, corporate parties, fundraisers, light-up ceremonies, parades, the Polar Express experience, and visits with families,” he says. “I do ‘Light Up La Grange’ every year and always enjoy meeting all the kids from my hometown. I also do a Boys & Girls club event in Cincinnati that is wellhosted. It is always an amazing event.”

Santa Pat Meehan, also known as the Derby City Kringle, has been appearing as the big man in red since 1979.

He began his specific journey when he was

a natural-bearded Santa - he grew his own whiskers - in Colorado in 1955.

My father was a designer-bearded Santa, using a prop beard affixed to his face, at the Louisville Central Park Santa Land in 1956. I visited my father but only recognized him after the visit.”

“I am a third-generation Santa,” he explains. “I have pictures of my grandfather as

Meehan also keeps very busy visiting good girls and boys throughout the season. He’s been the Santa at Oxmoor Center for 23 years.

He’s also appeared at the Louisville Free Public Library, ‘Light Up St. Matthews,’ 4th Street Live!, the Louisville Zoo, and the Lyndon Christmas celebration.

“My 18-month-old grandson, who was staying at my home with his parents for a number of months, came to visit me at the mall,” he says. “He did not cry but he was afraid of me.”

since 1994. He got his start as Santa when his church leaders asked him if he would make an appearance.

Dobbins takes his Santa duties quite seriously as he is a member of several Santa organizations, including the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas (FORBS) and International Brotherhood of Real Bearded Santas (IBRBS).

“I’ve been to two FORBS conventions in California and two IBRBS conventions in Tampa and Denver, and I am going to the Atlanta one in April,” he says.

When asked what his favorite story is to read to children, he says “The Night Before Christmas.”

Through the years Smithers has traveled many miles and seen many children.

“Even as a child I was intrigued with Santa Claus, and when I became a dad I wanted my children to have a Santa that reflected and looked like them, so I became their personal Santa Claus,” he explains.

Riley believes the convenient location of Medical Center Northeast is one of the reasons the facility has quickly blossomed.

“My treatment philosophy is to try to ensure patients understand as much about their disease as I know about their disease,” Riley says. “That way we can make betterinformed treatment decisions together.”

After receiving this difficult news, Beil decided to come to the Brown Cancer Center for a second opinion, and she never looked back.

“It was a very easy decision once I talked with the team,” Beil says.

Shortly after her diagnosis, Beil began her treatment at the Brown Cancer Center,

signaling the start of her long journey.

Beil explains that her treatments came in phases, within a series of different kinds that shrunk her cancer from 5.7 centimeters to 2 millimeters. After undergoing a double mastectomy and radiation treatments, Beil was deemed cancer-free. She has been in the clear for more than a year now, but she still must undergo a maintenance treatment regimen that lessens the chance of her

cancer recurring. Through her advocacy and resilience, Beil continues to inspire breast cancer warriors everywhere.

“Dr. Riley and Dr. Ajkay would make sure to explain everything to me so that I would understand why we were doing what we’re doing, as well as why that was the best course of treatment for my cancer,” Beil says.

Beil shares some powerful advice for others going through cancer treatments.

Not only does the Brown Cancer Center offer cutting-edge treatments for cancers, but it also offers a variety of services ranging from support groups to different therapies patients can utilize while on their cancer journey. Beil shares how a few of these services have impacted her personally.

Some of the services that Beil utilized during her time spent with the Brown Cancer Center include partnering with a nutritionist and cognitive therapist, obtaining massages, and participating in art therapy. The center was started in the 1980s by John and Eileen Wicker. Eileen had been volunteering as a docent at the Louisville Zoo when she learned that their raptor program was in need of further assistance.

She jumped on board and stayed for three years, formulating the idea of opening a place of her own to rehabilitate these special birds.

“Our rehab center was something we could do on the weekends,” John Wicker says. “We worked out of our basement, our garage and our backyard.”

“The volunteers today have it good,” Wicker says. “When we first started, we had gravel floors, no heat, no water, and I had to run hoses from my house to the center.”

Eileen is no longer with the operation as she passed away in February of 2020, but Wicker, Dicks and the volunteers keep her dedication and memory alive by caring for the raptors with the same kind of love and respect that she had for these majestic creatures.

Dicks volunteered at the center for three years before being hired for her current position one year ago. Her duties and responsibilities are quite varied.

“My job involves maintenance of the facility and enclosures, but the majority of my job involves bird care, from triage to making sure they’re getting a proper diet, to prescribing medication, to making sure they’re getting through the stages of rehabilitation and getting them ready for release,” she explains. “I’m responsible for every single bird here on the property.”

may have been attacked by a dog, cat or other animal. They may have been caught in a trap, poisoned or shot. They might have flown through a plate glass window and may be trapped inside of a house.

The birds first enter the center where they receive medical care. According to Wicker, at one time the center was lucky enough to have veterinarians who would volunteer

“She’s worked hard, she’s learned a lot, she’s studied a lot and she’s my right hand,” Wicker says. “I don’t know what I’d do without her.”

The center currently has about 45 active volunteers.

“They come in and do everything from cleaning hospital crates and carpets to scrubbing enclosures,” Dicks explains.

“We’re a really clean facility and every single enclosure gets cleaned from top to bottom every other day.”

The volunteers are also instructed on how to administer medication.

“It’s all on-the-job training,” Dicks explains.

Training takes about six weeks and volunteers are required to come in for a minimum of four hours each week.

The next step is to transfer them into a flight enclosure where they can build up their strength and agility. The final stage of rehabilitation is placing the birds in a kill pen, where they hunt for live prey such as mice.

“Once we know they’re strong enough and able to hunt on their own, then they are released,” Dicks explains.

SANTA’S TRASH COOKIES What you’ll need: • 14 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature • ½ cup granulated sugar • ½ cup brown sugar • 1 large egg • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda (make sure it’s not expired) • ¼ teaspoon salt • ⅓ cup crushed potato chips • ⅓ cup crushed pretzels • ½ cup mini white chocolate Reese’s Cups • ½ cup mini chocolate Reese’s Cups • ⅓ cup milk or semi-sweet chocolate chips • ½ cup M&M’s (I used red, green and blue) • ⅓ cup white chocolate chips • ¼ cup sprinkles of choice • Sprinkles of flaky sea salt for tops of cookies

First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Next, in a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda and salt together until they are combined, then set aside.

With a mixer, cream the butter and sugars together in a large bowl until light and fluffy, usually about one to three minutes.

Once the mixture turns pale yellow and has a light fluffy texture, it’s done. Make sure to not over-cream the mixture. Then, beat in an egg until it’s combined.

Next, add in the dry ingredients with the wet until they are combined. It will be very thick. After that’s combined, add in the pretzels, potato chips, M&M’s, Reese’s Cups, chocolate chips and sprinkles, and mix together gently.

Using a cookie scoop, scoop your dough balls onto your sheets with parchment paper and slightly press them down.

Before putting into the oven, sprinkle lightly with sea salt. If you’d like, you can add additional pretzels, chips, candies and sprinkles to the tops of the cookies for a little extra pizzazz. If you prefer the cookies to be thicker, don’t press down as much.

Bake until the edges are just starting to get golden, usually about seven to eight minutes.

Remove from the oven and let cool two to three minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.

WHAT IS CBD?

CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of the cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. There are more than 113 known cannabinoids that have medicinal properties. The known properties include pain relief, anxiety reduction, reduced inflammation, nerve protection and more.

HOW COULD CBD PRODUCTS IMPACT YOUR HEALTH?

Your body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS). When cannabinoids, via CBD products, enter the body they interact or “plug into” your ECS. From there, your ECS uses cannabinoids for what your body needs in order to reach homeostasis. If anxiety needs to be addressed, cannabinoids working through the ECS can calm nerves and trigger relaxing biological chemicals in the brain.

If pain is an issue, CBD can work with the ECS to calm nerves, reduce inflammation and relieve pain. CBD topicals can work with the peripheral nervous system and ECS through the skin the same way.

DOES IT MATTER WHERE YOU PURCHASE CBD?

However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has some standard rules in the food and dietary supplement manufacturing realm that should be applied to hemp. The manufacturer or processor should also be audit certified via the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations enforced by the FDA. This means the facility’s level of cleanliness is above and beyond someone extracting hemp out of their kitchen or barn, and they must keep accurate records of batches and testing samples. At the 1984 Olympic games, Terry Orlick and John Partington conducted a study of 235 Canadian athletes to explore the relative impact of mental, physical and technical preparation. Their research article, which concluded that only mental preparation showed any statistically significant correlation with final Olympic standing, was instrumental in putting applied sport psychology on the map.

The next two decades witnessed a

proliferation of university departments, research laboratories, graduate programs, and peer-reviewed journals devoted specifically to the study of sport psychology, in an attempt to expand the field’s theoretical and applied knowledge base. My own dissertation research, for example, was a comprehensive review of three decades of research literature related to performance under pressure. It is difficult to argue with the evidence, as they say, and the evidence has overwhelmingly demonstrated the benefits of mental training for performance.

THE COOL KIDS

Despite its growing scientific foundation, the sport psychology movement was slow to infiltrate the world of professional and collegiate sports, largely due to the collective distrust of “head shrinks” and bias toward seeing psychology as something reserved for the mentally disturbed.

In the 1990s, the credibility of sport psychology received a huge boost from

several high-profile coaches including Phil Jackson and Pete Carroll, and athletes like Michael Jordan and Greg Maddux, who were outspoken about the role of sport psychology in their own successes.

GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS

momentum, and organizational consultants are increasingly using principles of sport psychology to help business leaders prioritize effectively, motivate and empower others, and make influential decisions under multiple and often conflicting pressures.

Because high-ranking executives often have both the drive and financial resources to employ a personal coach, executive coaching has become one of the most popular and lucrative domains of mental performance consulting.

SUMMING UP

The meteoric rise of applied sport and performance psychology is the result of a confluence of factors including competitive spirit, scientific inquiry and vicarious

learning. Despite being met initially with intense skepticism, the field has overcome enormous odds to reach its current state of flourishing - but the revolution is far from over. Questions still remain regarding the standardization of training and credentialing in this burgeoning field.

However, suffice it to say that, at this point, the secret is out. Mental preparation is an indispensable part of a modern, comprehensive approach to enhancing performance. We have reached the point where mental training can no longer be considered supplemental or optional.

Coaches and business leaders who ignore this aspect of training do so at the risk of putting their teams and organizations at a

real disadvantage when going up against more mentally prepared competitors.

It is also becoming increasingly clear that mental training is not only for those who are mentally broken, but rather for anyone who stands to benefit from cultivating mental habits, attitudes and skills that enhance one’s ability to regulate their attention and emotions - namely, everyone. Mental training is not only an essential component of elite performance training alongside the physical and technical aspects, but simply part of a well-balanced approach to health and wellness for all of us.

Though Brian Gerard has been a minister for nearly 25 years, he feels he made one of his greatest outreach impacts in 2011 when he participated in a Swedish reality TV show called “Allt för Sverige.” He found out about the show through pure coincidence.

One day he was scrolling on Facebook when he saw a nationwide casting call, asking those with a Swedish ancestry to apply.

Gerard’s great-grandparents had immigrated from Sweden in the late 1800s, and that’s about the extent of what he knew about his heritage. He was eager to learn more.

“The show is basically ‘Amazing Race’ meets genealogy,” says Gerard, senior minister at Middletown Christian Church.

Only five males and five females were selected for the inaugural season of the show. The audition process was lengthy.

Gerard had to do both a paper and video interview before flying to New York for a screen test.

“I thought, ‘There’s no way this is going to happen,’” recalls Gerard, who adds with a chuckle, “I might have improved my chances of being chosen by bringing the producers some bourbon and an invitation to Churchill Downs.”

Gerard, 39 at the time, traveled to Sweden and was there for 35 days, competing for the grand prize, which was of sentimental rather than monetary value as the winner got to meet their Swedish relatives. Each episode featured a different team competition. If a team lost, its members each had to do an individual competition. During one episode, Gerard visited the church where his great-grandfather experienced his call to ministry. Gerard learned that his greatgrandfather came to America in the early 1900s and preached racial reconciliation.

Add the fact that Gerard’s oldest son is an adopted person of color, and it was overwhelming in the best of ways to discover his heritage.

“To learn about my own sense of what ministry looks like in terms of equity, injustice and inclusion made for a powerful narrative,” Gerard says.

Though Sweden is a predominantly nonreligious country, the show’s message resonated with viewers around the country.

“I had more people send me notes about faith and Christianity by doing that show than I ever had before,” Gerard says. “It was really amazing, the kind of witness it provided, and it wasn’t an evangelistic witness. It was simply the fact that I was a pastor from Kentucky, and I think there was something character-driven about that for a reality show.”

Gerard won the competition and got to meet his relatives.

“I fell in love with the academic study of religion and served as a youth pastor in Enid for two and a half years,” says Gerard, who later went to Yale as he had his eyes set on

He served a chaplain residency at Yale New Haven Hospital before turning to congregational ministry. In February of 2021, Gerard joined Middletown Christian Church as senior minister.

His wife Carrie, also ordained, is the executive director of Eastern Area Community Ministries in Louisville. The couple have two children, Ethan, 21, and Graham, 16. They adopted Ethan, who is multiracial, when he was an infant.

The family lives in North Oldham. Their neighborhood is on the river, which means they get to kayak and fish whenever they want. Having lived in the Louisville area for nearly 20 years, they adore the city, local parks and historic midtown area.

Middletown Christian Church is a community of faith that seeks to be fully welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community, as well as people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. They also bridge the theological and political spectrum. There was a stretch of four weeks in a row when Gerard had people approach him after services to tell him how moved they were by the church’s inclusive message.

“With tears in their eyes, these people said, ‘I’ve always been told that I couldn’t be loved because of who I am, but I’m so welcomed here that I actually feel the love of God,’” Gerard says. “When you’re finding your way in a church and something like that happens, it feels like a confirmation of call. In those moments, it’s like, ‘Yes, I’m in the right place.’ ” “I can’t think of a time when ministry has

been more overwhelming than it has been in the last 18 months,” Gerard adds. “I’ve never put in so many hours. I’ve never worn so many hats. It’s not like pastors had it especially difficult. Everyone did. It’s everybody’s first pandemic so no one knows exactly what to do.”

As such, Gerard feels that it’s a minister’s role to be a reflective presence in the life of others.
