Most of us are finding an unlimited amount of time on our hands during these fairly uncertain times. While it can be a stressful time for many of us, especially parents, we will all get through it and have memories to last a lifetime. Let’s hope that these few survival tips can cut down on stress and also bring a few more smiles into your life while we all stay safe at home.

1. DISNEY+ If you don’t have it, sign up now. It’s super affordable and gives you access to the entire Disney movie library, which you are going to need because the days are very, very long and screen time rules flew out the window weeks ago. Old movies are fun to share with your kids so maybe try to get them to sit down and watch Swiss Family Robinson (a personal fave yet I still can’t get my child to watch the whole thing) or hunker down and watch all the Star Wars one after another or have a Marvel movie marathon.

3. PARTICIPATE IN A CHALLENGE There are lots of social media and viral challenges out there and while I’m not a huge tech fan, the social aspect of it has given way to some really creative things happening. Maybe do a lip sync challenge video with your entire family, try the garage door challenge (if you are needing a drink and a great laugh), or participate in the plank or push up challenge. You can even come up with your own challenge if you are really feeling creative! Whatever you choose, make sure to nominate another family to try it after you do!

4. ONE-ON-ONE TIME

With us all having quite a few extra moments hanging at our homes these days, we are typically all up in each other’s business. But now is the time to make sure to carve out a little one-on-one time with your loved ones if you can. About 15 minutes here and there can go a long way.

6. WINE DELIVERY You are gonna need it. Pick a local winery and you will probably be happily surprised to find out they are delivering during this time!

While I don’t encourage drinking in excess, the days can be really quite emotionally draining and a cocktail hour once a week (or every day - you choose) isn’t going to hurt anyone! There are also quite a few Mexican restaurants selling their non-alcoholic margarita mix on their takeout menus now too. Who doesn’t need a Margarita Monday (or Tuesday & Wednesday too)? It’s ok, we get it. After this, we’ll all be drinking Ina Garten style, and if you don’t know what this is referring to, Google it.

Remember, this is a special time we’ve been given to slow down and reconnect.

Make sure to take it all in. Stay in bed a little longer, try to read that book you’ve been meaning to finish or try a new recipe you’ve been meaning to make. Whatever you do, make sure to check in on friends and family, especially those who are stuck home during this time alone. Some of you were maybe meant for these moments, but for others, this is a real challenge. Thankfully, we are able to still stay connected with technology.

Whatever you do to get through this time staying safe at home, cherish it. Remember this too shall pass.

Remember the days when shaking hands with a rock-n-roll star or rubbing elbows with an a famous athlete was a memorable experience? Remember the way your children watched superhero movies with their eyes wide and their mouths agape as they sat, mesmerized, at the notion of being able to fly, deflect bullets and neutralize the bad guys? Remember the times you had a random encounter with an A-list Hollywood actress at an airport or a legendary musician while vacationing in an exotic location? We remember such encounters because we, as a society, have elevated Hollywood superstars, sports icons, music legends and fictitious comic book characters as heroes in our minds.

It wasn’t until this spring when an insidious, highly contagious disease swiftly and jarringly upended our routines, our lives, our families and our world that our definition of “hero” was sharply

redefined. Suddenly we looked to doctors, nurses, hospital staff, first responders and emergency personnel with fresh eyes of gratitude and a renewed sense of awe as we recognized the grand and personal sacrifices they were making, daily, for the sake of their communities.

We are grateful to our hometown heroes in a way that perhaps we never have been in our lifetime because we know the blood, sweat and tears that these men and women have shed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that has swept through our country, leaving confusion, uncertainly, and blind fear in its wake. As schools, churches, restaurants, hair salons, gyms, movie theaters, shopping malls and other businesses shut down, those on the frontlines never stopped working. In fact, many put in overtime, both physically and mentally, to ensure the safety of their fellow man.

This strange and surreal experience has brought many lessons, the greatest of JUNE 2020 / 9

which is that we have heroes living among us. And for that, we are all eternally grateful. Therefore, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank these beautiful people for their ceaseless sacrifice, unwavering commitment to serve and boundless love of humankind.

When every day brings a new series of harrowing headlines, it can be easy to slip into sadness or flounder in fear. But I assure you, there is a light at the end of the tunnel thanks to this army of men and women as they are the heartbeat of hope that now, always has, and always will work tirelessly to relieve pain, save lives and restore health. These individuals dedicate their lives to helping us live our best lives.

Because as the saying goes, “When you have your health, you have everything.

When you do not have your health, nothing else matters.”

Kroger began to monitor the number of customers per square foot in its stores using its industry-leading QueVision technology, which already provides a count of the customers entering and exiting stores.

“By leveraging QueVision, our technology system that uses infrared sensors and predictive analytics, we are able to more efficiently support our new capacity limits, creating a safer environment for our customers and associates,” says Yael Cosset, Kroger’s chief technology and digital officer.

Kroger’s new customer capacity limits joins other measures the retailer has established to promote physical distancing, including the addition of plexiglass partitions and educational floor decals and airing of a

healthy habits message via in-store radio to encourage customers to practice good hygiene and spatial awareness.

Kroger and its affiliates have also recently implemented protective and preventive measures, including protective face masks and gloves for associates and associate wellness checks.

“Our introduction of customer capacity limits is one more way we are doing our part to flatten the curve while operating as an essential business, providing our customers with access to fresh, affordable food and products,” says Erin Grant, Kroger Corporate Affairs Manager & Media Relations. “During this national pandemic, we are committed to adopting preventive measures to help protect the safety and health of our associates, customers and communities.”

Kroger also worked to establish drive-thru testing centers that are open to residents of Kentucky.

You’ll need dough, sauce, toppings, and maybe even give him a pizza oven for a real surprise! IN ST. MATTHEWS, WITH HELP COMES HEALING FIRST HOUR GRIEF RESPONSE OFFERS HOPE FOR THOSE WHO ARE GRIEVING Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing

In 2011, Karen Buchanan was in the middle of making lunch when, in a split second, her life was forever changed. Upstairs, her husband had committed suicide, and when first responders arrived on the scene, they dealt with the logistics of the situation but were at a loss when it came to knowing how to help Buchanan.

“They didn’t know what to do with me,” she says.

As a result, Buchanan was left flailing in a state of shock, sadness, confusion and chaos with nobody to talk to about what to do with her racing emotions.

“I knew pretty quickly that I wanted to figure out a way to help the next suicide survivor widow,” Buchanan says. “I just wasn’t sure what that looked like.”

In 2015 she met Lisa Schardein, who also suffered a tragic loss in 2011 when her 19-year-old son was killed by a drunk driver.

The two women discussed the anguish they suffered following their losses, and how they wished there had been a resource available to help them navigate their way through the initial fog of grief. They decided to create First Hour Grief Response, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps people navigate the sudden loss of a loved one. The organization didn’t officially launch until 2018. Funded by grants and private donations, the women quit their jobs in order to devote their lives to the organization.

The women are certified by the Grief Recovery Institute and offer free 90-minute grief mentoring to those who are newly grieving, helping them sort through both the emotional and pragmatic logistics of their new, strange life.

Schardein, who worked in marketing for more than three decades, says that after her only child died, she didn’t know who she was anymore. She needed to find a purpose in life and the new organization was a perfect fit.

When Buchanan and Schardein meet with grievers, they spend very little time talking about themselves, though they do take a few minutes to share their personal stories so that people understand that they have endured similar pain.

“So many people don’t know how to treat those who have experienced a loss, so part of our vision is to help grief be understood by everybody,” Schardein says. “We want to give bystanders strategies for helping people they care about because they often say or do the wrong thing.”

“They realize we’ve been where they are, so they’re like, ‘Okay, you get me,’” Schardein says.

days when a griever is in a state of shock but is forced to make dozens of decisions regarding funeral details, organ donation, legal documents and more.

People typically find their way to First Hour Grief Response about three weeks after a loss, when friends and family have gone back to normal routines, leaving them to process what’s happened. This is a fragile time in the grieving process, as it can be difficult to eat, sleep, think and function. As a result, the grieving individual’s life at this time can feel forced, strange and disconcerting.

“They’re asking themselves, ‘Am I going crazy?’” Schardein says. “They want to talk to someone to find out if what they’re feeling is normal.”

The First Hour Grief Response website is divided into five categories that grievers can navigate: loss of a child, spouse, parent and friend, as well as loss by suicide. The site also lists resources and support groups.

Buchanan and Schardein help to run several support groups around the city for loss due to addiction, loss of child, infant loss, and general grief support.

Buchanan and Schardein are also in the process of training additional facilitators, and are working to set up grief support groups around downtown and the west end of the city. In addition, they have fee-based, special counselors on staff who can help those who have suffered traumatic loss such as suicide. Buchanan wanted to be sure eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy was also an option, as she found it to be highly effective in her own healing following her trauma.

“It’s an amazing tool that truly saved me, as it buried the vision of finding my husband following his suicide,” Buchanan says. “Now that vision no longer haunts me.”

This is the time of year to plant flowers! Flowers bring extra beauty and happiness into our world, and the best kind of flowering plant is the kind that keeps coming back year after year — the perennial.

Growing perennials is one of the easiest ways to garden. I have more than 40 varieties of perennials in my yard, I just love them because they give me a great ‘cutting’ selection all growing season long in which to make beautiful floral arrangements. In the summer months, entertaining and gardening life go hand in hand.

When one plant is finished blooming and the last bloom fades, I always design my gardens so that another plant begins to bloom. This keeps the garden in perpetual motion, with color consistently ever-present. It is called, succession planting.

Another great tip is to design the flower garden with plants low in the front and high in the back. I also like to repeat a perennial three times in the garden plot, spaced apart from each other but in equal distances, this way there is easy rhythm in the design and the eye move freely through the plot. This is more of an English gardening technique.

DIGGING A NEW HOME

Different sizes of containers will yield more or less bloom. The bigger the plastic pot, the older the plant, thus, more blooms.

Check the roots for an established root system with lots of little root ends showing. If roots have become root bound, which looks like rope wrapped around the base of the plant, choose another specimen. A root-bound plant has been there awhile, so there is more of a chance to bring home disease, too. Also, believe it or not, I often smell the soil. It should be earthy and fresh smelling, not sour or decaying in smell.

I give perennials a good watering when I get them home. Then, trim off any tired foliage or blooms. I like to plant in the lowest heat portion of the day, usually in the morning. Roll the round edges of the plastic container on the ground to loosen the soil, and then tip the pot to gently lift out the root ball into your hand. Check the root system, claw away some of the dirt so that the roots become loose and free to branch out when planted in the soil.

In addition, when picking the right plants to purchase from your local nursery, check the foliage for any disease. Look for the red spider mites or white aphids, which kind of look like cotton. If there is any indication, find another flowered friend!

Place root ball in the prepared hole. The top of the dirt from the pot should be level with the top of the hole at soil grade. Backfill the dirt into the hole and gently press to firm up the plant. This also helps remove any air pockets. Water in well.

Masonic lodges have been around for hundreds of years. Members can include tradesmen, policemen, lawyers, chefs and even celebrities. Al Clark, the philanthropy committee chairperson for the Swigert Middletown Masonic Lodge No. 218 and a member of the masons for decades, shares with us some of the outreach projects near and dear to our local masons and their sisterly counterparts, the Eastern Star.

Clark says individuals can become a masons if they have family members who have joined, and a great approach for those who are interested is to ask an existing mason about the process of joining. The masons don’t solicit members. Clark’s own masonic lineage, which can be traced to England, is eight generations long, and his grandfather was a mason for 65 years.

A California native, Clark and his wife Jeannie found their way to Kentucky by way of his workplace, Greif Brothers in Columbus, Ohio. The company owned a location on St. Louis Avenue in Louisville, where Clark worked as a lumber salesperson back in 1987. Once the couple arrived here, they fell in love with the city and have been in Louisville ever since. In fact, Jeannie had a long career working with State Farm Agent Bob Blair as his office manager. They have become fixtures

Like many fraternal clubs, the masons are a secret society, but Clark is quick to point out that there is “nothing subversive” about masonry. Membership does involve secret handshakes and other components kept close to the vest, but one aspect of the masons that is not secretive is how much each lodge cares for its community.

Fortunately for us, the Swigert Middletown Masonic Lodge is no exception.

The governing body of the masons is the Grand Lodge of Kentucky, located

on Commonwealth Avenue. There are approximately 160 to 170 members, and meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of the month at the Swigert Middletown Hall. There is typically a dinner at 6 p.m., after which a meeting begins at 7 p.m. The dinner is not just for the masons.

The ladies of the masons have their own group, known as Eastern Star. One could call it a ladies auxiliary, but it is every bit akin to masonry beliefs and precepts. The masons even offer youth organizations - Rainbow Girls and Job’s Daughters for young ladies, and the Order of DeMolay for young men.

The Swigert Lodge has supported several organizations throughout the years including Make-A-Wish Foundation, local little league baseball programs, St. Mary’s Center on Aiken Road, and the Morton Center, which offers treatment for substance abuse. Clark says some of his lodge members, as well as some members’ family and friends, have benefited from the Morton Center.

St. Mary’s Center serves as a day facility for those with autism. Several members of the lodge have attended the center to experience what a day there is like.

“There is a room there at the center that was donated by Papa John Schnatter,” Clark says, referring to the Papa John’s Pizza founder. “Everyone will gather into there and soon a delivery is made from the Papa John’s commissary. Would you believe that it is a skid of dismantled pizza boxes? These individuals go crazy for the chance to assemble the boxes, and prepare them to be placed back on the truck to be hauled off to be used in the restaurants.

While the Swigert Lodge strives to support local causes, the organization helps national agencies as well, including the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).

One of the largest charitable events that the lodge supports is the Middletown Elementary perfect attendance program.

Working with Justin Matson, the school’s principal, and the Family Resource Center at the school, the masons donate money and bicycles. The bikes are used to incentivize the students to come to school every day, and monetary donations serve to assist those in need.

During the Middletown Elementary’s welcome assembly at the beginning of the school year, Matson shows off a bicycle or two, to give the students a glimpse of what they could win through perfect attendance. Through the generosity of local sports store Academy Sports + Outdoors, the masons were able to provide eight bikes last year.

Middletown Elementary and the masons were able to partner up and donate bikes to Hite Elementary as well, to aid in Hite’s perfect attendance incentive program.
