“‘Dream Variants’ is a more modern piece, whereas ‘The Crosley March’ is more on a high-school level in terms of technique demands, range and rhythm,” Stivers says.

According to Stroube, submissions are rendered anonymous and grouped according to performance type. Committees of teachers, also grouped by performance type, then evaluate and rank the recordings.

“In other words, orchestra teachers rank orchestras, band teachers rank bands and choral teachers rank choirs,” Stroube says.

“The highest-ranking groups, to the point that performance times are exhausted, are invited to perform.”

The Crosby band was notified during the summer that they’d been accepted, yet the students who actually recorded the audition pieces didn’t have the opportunity to perform at the conference in February. They were eighth graders at the time of the recording, and have since gone on to high school.

“I never got to do a face-to-face to tell them we made it, but I did send email, texts and social media posts out to the parents and graduates thanking them for their participation.” Stivers says.

The former students and their parents were invited to listen to the current students play. At the conference the band performed “Exaltation Fanfare”

Stivers says he’s wanted to bring his band to the state conference ever since he began teaching at Crosby nearly a decade ago.

Ammerman is pleased with the connections Stivers has helped to build during his years at Crosby.

Jazzercise, a fitness program founded in California 50 years ago, has grown in popularity though the years to include fitness centers all around the world. Melissa Horsell, a certified Jazzercise instructor for the past 15 years, owns Jazzercise Middletown Fitness Center. Though the Jazzercise program has been in existence for five decades, the regimen has evolved over time to stay hip and current.

Such is the case for member Chinelle Bowdy.

“We are there for each other through all the good times, as well as to encourage and support each other through the low points too,” Bowdy says.

“It’s not the same class that your mom took in the ‘80s,” Horsell says. “There’s new music, new moves and several different formats.”

Jazzercise Middletown offers weekday morning childcare so stay-at-home moms can also enjoy fitness and fellowship.

Jazzercise classes can be modified to accommodate any age and fitness level.

Jazzercise instructors stay on top of the latest industry trends, and the streamlined level of instruction that comes from the corporate office sets Jazzercise apart from other programs.

Members pay just $59 per month for unlimited classes. The program’s flagship class is a format called Dance Mixx, which includes 35 minutes of cardiovascular exercise and 25 minutes of strength training.

Horsell’s facility also offers a high-intensity interval class as well as a 30-minute express class for those who need to squeeze in a quick workout over a lunch break.

“People tell me all the time, ‘Jazzercise got me through XYZ in my life,’” Horsell says.

“They’ll tell me that their bone density has improved or that they recovered exponentially faster from a surgery. Jazzercise is the present you give yourself every day.”

“We have women in their 20s and those in their 80s,” Horsell says. “It’s been my only form of exercise for 15 years and I’m more fit now in my 40s than I was in my 20s. I love the combination of cardio and strength training, fun music, and motivating environment.”

“You could take a class anywhere in the world and know what to expect because it’s taught the same way,” says Horsell, who first started teaching Jazzercise in a church ten years ago on the east side of Louisville.

Within 18 months, Horsell’s classes had grown enough to necessitate a commercial space. Now her program has expanded to a third location, and recently reached the 10year mark.

“It’s grown from just me teaching five classes a week to having ten instructors teaching 40 classes a week,” Horsell says.

Though men are welcome to join, Jazzercise tends to appeal more to women who seek both physical and social perks.

When Teddy Abrams was considering taking over as music director for the Louisville Orchestra in 2013, he saw great potential in making Louisville his new home. Now wrapping up his sixth season at the helm, he’s never been more confident in his decision.

“Everything I saw before I got the job was very indicative of the possibilities of what this city could be, and what the orchestra could be,” Abrams says.

At just 32 years old, Abrams has received acclaim and praise within the music industry, leading the Louisville Orchestra to impressive heights.

“Louisville was already an amazing city, and I saw the ingredients there to take the

Typically, an orchestra may hope to sell a couple thousand copies of an album, and expect to play for small groups of local orchestra lovers and subscribers. “The Order of Nature” gave the Louisville Orchestra the opportunity to take their show on the road, with performances in several major U.S. cities including Chicago, New York and Seattle.

“Those shows have given us a great opportunity to really share what we’re doing here in Louisville with other orchestras and communities where [ James] has a following,” Abrams says.

The album had a national rollout, with a review in Rolling Stone and the opportunity to appear on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”.

“That was an amazing experience that orchestras usually never get a taste of,” Abrams says. “It was a really proud moment for all of us representing the city. Part of our mission is to really carry the banner for Louisville, and make positive associations with the town. We want to increase the understanding of how special Louisville is and how creative our arts community is.”

The national attention will continue into 2021, as it was recently announced that the Louisville Orchestra was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall as part of the “Carnegie Hall Presents” series. The orchestra will join James and the Louisville Ballet for a February 20 performance.

“[The Carnegie Hall leadership] has been keeping their eye on what we’ve been doing over the last several years, and it’s really wonderful that they’re inviting us to share that with a New York audience,” Abrams says. “We’re hoping to turn it into a weeklong festivity celebrating Louisville and Kentucky. This is an opportunity to redefine how people see our state, and New York is the place to do it.”

The Carnegie Hall show won’t be the first taste of the Louisville Orchestra for New Yorkers. At the beginning of the current performance season, the city’s major classical radio station, WQXR, featured a live broadcast of the orchestra’s openingnight performance.

Abrams and his team have continued to grow the Louisville Orchestra’s presence locally as well, with innovative performances and programs to keep locals engaged and coming back for more.

The 2019-2020 performance season will wrap up a bit earlier than usual, with the last performance slated for the end of April.

On April 24, the orchestra will take the stage at one of the newest performance venues in the city, Old Forester’s Paristown Hall, followed by a show the next night at Whitney Hall. Both shows include a performance of “The Blue Hour,” a piece of music that has been played only one other time by an orchestra. One of the composers, Shara Nova, will join the orchestra as a vocalist for the performance.

Abrams has already seen an example of the city’s transformational possibilities over the last six years in his own NuLu neighborhood. The burgeoning entertainment district has received national attention, and has been part of what’s kept Abrams interested in sticking around.

As Abrams looks to the future, he is excited to continue creating immersive music pieces (a term he coined) in conjunction with the orchestra, similar to his award-winning composition, “The Greatest: Muhammad Ali”. In creating these immersive pieces, he combines drama, film, poetry and other artistic mediums, with music connecting The orchestra performed a concert at the new them all.

Play All Day New Malibu Jack’s Indoor Theme Park Is A Family Affair Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing

In the 1950s, Vernon Hatton became a Kentucky basketball legend when he made a half-court shot to send the University of Kentucky into a third overtime in what resulted in a victory over Temple University. He went on to become an All-American and played in the NBA, but ultimately left the sport to become an auctioneer in Lexington, Kentucky - a career that suited him well. His sons, Steve, Jeff, and Terry, grew up in the auction business, watching their dad in action every Monday morning in a Lexington tobacco warehouse.

“Dad was an entertainer,” Steve says. “He told stories and got people laughing. People drove several hours to come listen to him and eat chili dogs.”

Steve and his brothers carried on the tradition until about 15 years ago, when they decided to branch out from the

auction business and open the Kentucky Basketball Academy, a five-court facility that held national basketball and volleyball tournaments.

Steve’s son Tyler began working with his dad at age 12, acting as scorekeeper at basketball games. Though the family enjoyed aspects of the business, they dealt with a good bit of negativity.

“Basketball tournaments had 40 teams and 39 of those teams lost, so you can imagine that there was a lot of complaining,” Steve says. “Just dealing with that negativity was an event itself.”

Steve and his brothers thought about how great it would be to create a place that would foster nothing but good times and fun vibes.

Steve had a friend who opened an outdoor family fun center in Kentucky, but the fickle midwestern weather was brutal for business and it closed after a few years. Steve began thinking about offering an indoor facility APRIL 2020

with similar amenities.

In the meantime, Tyler was studying communications and advertising in college.

He also served for a few years on a church mission trip to Argentina where he learned how much he enjoyed helping others and seeing joy in people’s eyes.

“Dad was cooking up this idea of a family fun center with his brothers, and although I knew they were full of great ideas, I wanted to make sure they could refine those ideas,” says Tyler, who worked on branding the concept by creating logos and signage, and officially joined the family business after graduating from college.

The family did some research and found that most arcades were dark and filled with neon. They chose to go in a different direction, envisioning a beach vibe that was bright, colorful and festive.

In 2013 Steve and his brothers found an

old tennis center in the Lexington area that was for sale, and decided to take the plunge and open Malibu Jack’s Indoor Theme Park featuring electronic go-karts, laser tag, miniature golf, virtual reality activities, a basketball shootout and more.

“We brought in palm trees, waterfalls, bright lights and a boardwalk to walk around,” Tyler says. “It got a lot of people’s attention. Nobody was putting in a huge tropical golf course inside.”

The transition included taking apart and putting together rides, moving games, as well as hiring and training new staff members as the business grew from 35 to 100 employees. The size of the new location enabled the owners to increase their arcade offerings, add an 18-lane bowling alley, and include a high-speed Wave Rider that’s similar to the Super Himalaya ride at the state fair. In addition, a restaurant and bar will open this spring.

Investors came knocking and after a few years of success, the family decided to open another Malibu Jack’s in Louisville in 2016. The indoor theme park has been so popular that in December of 2019, the owners moved the business to a new location on Hurstbourne Parkway that nearly doubled their square footage from 65,000 to 120,000.

“People love being able to enjoy a nice meal right on site,” Steve says. “It enables them to stay here all day in this laid-back atmosphere.”

“Everyone was so happy,” he says. “It’s just what Louisville needed.”

People are drawn to the friendly competition of go-karts. For kids 10 and under, the Bounce Beach play area is also popular.

“The only time a child cries at Bounce Beach is when parents tell them it’s time to leave,” says Steve, who offers special deals to nonprofit organizations like Angels in Disguise and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

At the original location, Malibu Jack’s was known as a kids’ fun zone, so the owners did all they could to let the public know they had something for everyone - from toddlers to grandparents. Teenagers especially enjoy the indoor theme park for date nights, and adults can also have a ball.

One of Steve’s fondest memories at Malibu Jack’s is when he was sitting by the waterfall under the palm trees, and a little girl walked by with her father and asked, “Daddy, is this paradise?” The dad replied, “It might be close, honey!”

After working for so many years at the Kentucky Basketball Academy, Steve had gotten used to fielding complaints anytime someone approached him. Once he transitioned into the family fun business, he braced himself the first time an employee told him that a parent wanted to speak to him. As the parent started talking, he said to Steve, “Sir, do you own this place?”

Steve nodded, thinking, “Uh-oh. Here we go.” do a lot of work for the business as well.

pring has finally sprung. It’s that time of year when you want to feel refreshed and clean, and declutter your house while you’re at it. With the weather starting to warm up, you’ll want to start heading outside to enjoy the sun and fresh air.

Nevertheless, we all have a need to clean this time of year - so what is the best way to tackle this year’s spring cleaning to-do list? It doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and it can even be fun. Getting the house in working order again feels good, and you can do it. Here are a few tips that will help you along to a very successful spring cleaning campaign.

TAKE IT ONE ROOM AT A TIME

CLEAR THE CLUTTER

Houses can be overwhelming when it comes to cleaning, so be sure to break your cleaning down into smaller, manageable projects. One easy way to do this is to think in terms of one room at a time. Use a room checklist as a place to start, and also as a way to prevent forgetting about items you might not always clean. If you’ve already cleaned some items in certain rooms then feel free to skip, but you are sure to find something that’s taken a back seat all winter and needs a deep clean. Start with rooms that get the most traffic so that if your plans get derailed, you’ll still have a sense of accomplishment.

One of the biggest and best parts of spring cleaning is the purging of anything and everything you don’t need anymore. The feeling of letting go is a major way to refresh your soul this spring. Think about this in four categories - trash or recycle, sell, donate, and, finally, put away. There are always things we want to keep, and some we can do without.

Throughout her life she maintained her love of nature and bird watching. While pursuing a career as a teacher, Pittman became more serious about learning about birds and their habits. In 2012, she attended a field trip organized by the Beckham Bird Club in Louisville.

“I remember it being a cold morning and I wasn’t dressed for the weather,” Pittman says.

At the end of each month, Pittman prepares a list of species she’s seen or heard.

As Pittman began to spend more and more time birding in the park, she noticed areas in need of some attention. She created a list of ideas for Price, such as pruning branches and vines to open up trails, that she thought would enhance the experience of the wooded areas for park goers.

“I wanted to give back at least as much as I was getting from the park,” she says.

Building on the species list she compiles for the park, Pittman also began submitting her species lists to Cornell University’s Lab of Ornithology eBird site. The eBird site is an online database of global, real-time bird distribution and abundance.

In 2019 Pittman was awarded the Beckham Bird Club Award for the most species of birds found in a hot-spot area, based on her birding in 2018.

Tom Sawyer Park uses the bird species list to help determine the types of trees, bushes and wildflowers that could be planted in the park to help maintain and increase the bird population.

As her involvement with the park grew, Pittman says she began to appreciate what the park has to offer on a deeper level. As her experience in birding developed, she became familiar with the various nooks and crannies of the park.

In addition to birding and trail maintenance, Pittman also began photographing various spots and wildlife for the park’s Facebook page.

Through her involvement in the park, Pittman has grown from a mere volunteer to an ambassador of sorts. She gives impromptu walking tours for park newcomers and helps hikers back to their cars if they’ve gotten turned around.

“My volunteer time in the park has resulted in my getting to meet many of the park users,” she says. “People come up and ask what birds I had seen that day, or will talk about the birds at their yard feeders and hope I can identify them from their descriptions. I am surprised at how many people have thanked me for helping to take care of the wooded area.”

Park goers often ask Pittman where they can see a particular species - often bluebirds.

She suggested to Price that the park construct bird boxes that could be placed in areas where a particular species has been spotted. She monitors the boxes, and the park continues to have nesting bluebirds, tree swallows and chickadees. Bluebirds, she says, can be seen year round in the park, and the best place to spot them is near the front of the recreation building. Tree swallows are often observed swooping low over the soccer fields during the summer.

Pittman recently began assisting a fellow Beckham Bird Club member who is conducting research on the nesting and hunting habits of the great-horned, eastern screech and barred owls. This has resulted in a spotting of a northern saw-whet owl and a barn owl, which she says are rare for Tom Sawyer Park.

“Park walkers might be in for a treat when walking the fitness loop at dusk,” Pittman says. “A great-horned owl or eastern screech owl might be heard, or they’ll have a magical moment if one flies by.”

sparrow, European starling, tufted titmouse, eastern towhee, red-bellied woodpecker, downy woodpecker, black vulture, or turkey vulture.

Some of Pittman’s more interesting finds in 2019 were a black-billed cuckoo, grasshopper sparrow, Henslow’s sparrow, and Wilson’s snipe, along with the goldenwinged, mourning, Tennessee and Wilson’s warblers. She observed 32 of a possible 36 species of warblers in the park in 2019.

“The sounds of the wood thrush, warbling vireo, yellow-billed cuckoo, ovenbird and

woodcock are especially beautiful to hear,” she says.

A favorite of Pittman’s to spot is the Caroline wren, which she says is classy looking and has many clear, loud songs.

Another one of her favorites is the belted kingfisher, which has a rattling sound. These can be seen or heard at the marsh in the wetlands area, as well as Goose Creek by the falls under Lakeland Road. Great blue herons and green herons are sometimes seen in these areas as well.

“Don’t forget to stop, look and listen during

your walks and take the time to look up,” she says. “You just might see red-shouldered, red-tailed, Cooper’s and sharp-shinned hawks, or a seasonal broad-winged hawk or northern harrier, or a migrating great egret.”

For those interested in honing their birdwatching skills, Pittman suggests joining a bird club and meeting other like-minded people. Field trips to various locales in Jefferson and surrounding counties are a great way to learn from experienced leaders. All that is needed is a decent pair of binoculars, a bird field guide or a cell phone bird app, and a sense of adventure.

This is how Kelly and Ben are able to put their show together. Kelly says every morning her and Ben look at a few show prep websites. The prep websites compile all the trending stories into different categories (news, weird, entertainment, etc.). She says she and Ben also watch social media to see what people are talking about. This gives them a plan for every day’s show. Kelly says her and Ben are prepared to go with anything that might pop up in the middle of the show, “it’s planned improv.”

She says that interacting with listeners all day keeps her and Ben invested in their brand.

They can comment and respond to questions from their phones no matter where they are.

“I do a lot of that from the carpool line during the school year,” Kelly adds.

Their fans send them stories her and Ben think should be on the show, and her and Ben love that because, as Kelly explains, “it shows how well they know us and the show.”

When asked what the most challenging part of her job is, she says, “The early hours.

I’m not a morning person. Never have been. People who say your body adjusts to the schedule are lying. I’ve been doing mornings for 20 years on this show and I curse the alarm every dang morning. That said, once I get here, we have a ball every day. I love every aspect of what I do.

“I’ve always looked at our show as an escape for listeners from their own stress and struggles,” Kelly says when asked about a constant in her career at DJX. “We always try to make you laugh for a few minutes, and maybe turn around what may have started out as a challenging day. We’re not a drama or controversy-filled show. We are fun and silly. That has proven to be a pretty successful philosophy for us.”

When asked who Kelly’s “dream guest” to have on her show would be, she responded, Ryan Reynolds.

“Ryan Reynolds in studio is the pot at the end of the rainbow for me,” she says.

The show has had some pretty big names over the years including Jennifer Lawrence, Will Smith, Kevin Hart and Jennifer Lopez.

Kelly’s favorite radio station to listen to as a kid was U93 and the U Morning Crew in South Bend, Indiana. She says she grew up listening to U93 and the U Morning Crew.

She is a music fan.

“Richard Marx when I was in the 8th grade was my first concert,” she says. “One of the best shows I’ve seen, though, is Ed Sheeran.

He was incredible as a one-man show with no band, just him.”
