KILLED IT GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM COMPLETES RECORD SEASON

Writer / Keeley Miller For the girls volleyball team, the 2015 season was one for the books. At the start of the season, the goals for the team were to win sectionals and compete for the state championship. With a regionals champion title and a 35-3 record, the team finished strong. “[The team performed] unbelievably well. We got 35-3 on the season which is a school record for wins. We won the school’s first sectional championship in seven years,” said coach Jason Young. “We won the first regional championship for volleyball and lost in the state semi-final. We were ranked second in the state and 11th in the country for most of the year.”

Beyond an excellent performance on the court, the volleyball team also excelled in the classroom. With top students, this year’s roster will be the fourth consecutive team to be recognized with a AVCA team academic award.

Senior leadership, team chemistry and top coaches along with hard work launched the girls volleyball team to success. Bonding on and off the court, the athletes grew close throughout the season.

“They loved playing with and for each other. This group cared so much about how they played and how they represented the community,” said Young. “I had tremendous support from the parents and administration which made my job an easy one.”

LINDSEY SCHULER Other than maintaining her 4.324 GPA, senior Lindsey Schuler has a lot on her plate. She has taken AP calculus, stats, government, economics and more. She has been involved with many organizations as she was her class officer her freshman year, student council officer her junior year and National Honor Society president this year, along with a list of several different clubs. In the midst of it all, Schuler still makes time for her cheer team.

Schuler began cheering in eighth grade at Indiana Elite and continued all throughout high school. She played on the varsity team all four years of her high school career and hopes to continue to do so in college. Schuler’s dream schools are Vanderbilt and Northwestern, but she believes she will end up at Purdue – as she is already talking with the Purdue coach.

The 2015 HSE Girls Volleyball team’s success has laid the groundwork for future teams to succeed as well.

“I like being a part of something bigger,” said Schuler. “These girls are like my family. Everyday after school, it doesn’t matter what happened that day. You always have a separate, little home of girls. It’s so fun.”

“It is the beginning of great things for Hamilton Southeastern volleyball.

My hope is that we inspired the next generation of great female volleyball players, and that the current group is motivated to take the program to the next level,” said Young. “I believe they will.”

There are three main Blue Crew leaders: seniors Ryan Dufinetz, Drew Simone and Nick Krauter. They were chosen by the leaders from the previous year in order to carry on the school pride they had their senior year. The new leaders then chose who was in Blue Crew for the upcoming school year.

At every possible game, a group of students in the student section come together and pump up the rest of the crowd through cheers and shouting. This group of students is called Blue Crew. Their official job is to prep for tailgates and get people to attend the games, but through this group, friendships are made.

“Blue Crew has strengthened my relationships,”

“We chose the people who have shown up to games,” said Krauter. “[They have] been loud and shown characteristics of a leader.”

Ultimately, the Blue Crew is designed to promote school spirit and encourage students to get out and support HSE athletes. They attend games all across the state, bringing HSE spirit with them.

“I think everyone who shows up to support the school falls under the umbrella of ‘Blue Crew.’

It’s not exclusive, not just a select group of people can be in it,” said Dufinetz. “I think it’s something everyone is involved in when they make the choice to support their school from the stands. Simply put, coming to games is fun.

You get to be with all your friends and support your friends in their sport.”

In my opinion, that is what I love most about it,” said John. “Also [it’s] the fact that you have professionals in the industry helping you get better at whatever your goal is versus someone just taking a small monthly fee to run around with your head cut off.”

John is not only a throws coach and teacher at HSE, but also a record-winning elite strongman.

Since beginning training at Force Barbell, he has set two national records in Strongman and won every competition that he has taken part in.

Along with John, his wife Amanda has also seen significant results after joining. Despite running for almost a year before beginning strength training at Force Barbell, Amanda emphasized that she did not begin to see major changes in her fitness until she joined.

“I wanted to build up some strength. I have two

kids, and I was maintaining weight, but I really wanted to have better form and learn from professionals,” said Amanda. “I have noticed that I am tighter through the waist and have strengthened my core in only a few weeks.”

Force Barbell prides itself on serving a variety of clients, including youth athletes from ages 8 and up. They also have senior citizens looking for general health and wellness, high school athletes and professional competitors.

Each workout is tailored specifically for each client, focusing on building strengths to their maximum potential while also bringing up the weaker issues.

“I would recommend joining to all of my friends,” said Amanda. “As far as getting women in here, it is not scary. We encourage each other, and when you come in, they know your name. When you leave, there is always someone that says goodbye. I can tell you that after a year of running, people did not start complimenting me until after I came here. From other moms to college athletes, I would highly recommend it to anyone.”

BEATING THE RANKINGS GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY CLIMBS RANKINGS TO PLACE 10TH AT STATE MEET Writer & Photographer / Keeley Miller At the start of the season, HSE’s girls cross country team wasn’t even ranked on some polls and was barely ranked on the top 25 teams in the state on others. After the loss of two top seniors after the 2014 season, underclassmen were under pressure to step up and lead the team.

“I knew that we were going to be resetting the team after we lost a lot of the top seniors, but I knew the eighth grade girls coming in were pretty solid,” said coach Joseph Golden. ”I expected us to be competitive but not on an elite level.”

The team was led by junior Sabrina Bippus and followed close behind by freshmen Lulu Black, Maddie Mirro and Lilly Cummins. Despite their age, the varsity team proved their worth by placing tenth at the state meet Oct. 31. “[Some of the freshmen] came in and did well from the start. Others progressed throughout

the season, and that is part of the reason why we got better throughout the season. Everyone got better, but a lot of them got a lot better,” said Golden. “We went from being mildly competitive to being close to an elite team.”

After a season of growth, the girls cross country team proved that pre-season rankings wouldn’t stop them from crushing

their competition after placing in every tournament meet to make their way to the state championships.

“We have three freshmen in the top five and a few more knocking on that door,” said Golden.

“That group will definitely be better and be in the mix for Varsity for the next three years. They definitely have potential to run well long-term.”
