Whether they are in class, the band room or studying for an AP test, they work hard every day balancing a heavy schedule.

“You learn how to time manage a lot when it comes to band, and that was something I sucked at and am still not great at, but I am working on it,” said Graham. “[Marching band] is really stressful, and you get tired really easily, but once you get to a competition, everything finally comes together. You have this beautiful masterpiece at the end.”

Graham, HSE’s Royal Command and Guard Drum Major, has been involved in band since sixth grade. With a GPA of 4.5, he also balances leadership in the marching band with multiple

grade. What once began as a required class became a passion through marching band.

Patel also holds a 4.7 GPA and strives to go to Stanford to study medicine.

“The best part about being on marching band is the friends,” said Patel. “You’re competing with the people that you spend 30 hours a week with working on something.”

Every summer, the HSE cross country team travels to Brown County for an intensive week of training. But between miles of trail running in sweltering heat, the team finds another test to put their bodies through — the annual milk chug competition.

The team nominates a member or two from each grade level to compete in the challenge. Each athlete has to drink a half gallon of 2% milk as fast as they can and be able to keep it down afterward for two minutes, but holding it down is a whole challenge in itself.

This year, sophomore Nicolas Epperson beat the competition with a time of 1:33, an attempt to surpass the record of 32 seconds.

“One of my friends told me I should do it, so I thought I would try. I thought that it was going to be a full gallon, but when I learned that it was only a half gallon, I was in,” said Epperson. “Right at the beginning, my stomach was like ‘ugh, I don’t really want to do this.’ But after that, I just felt good.”

The milk chug competition began about seven years ago and has been HSE Cross Country tradition ever since. The current record, 32 seconds, was set by Bryce Miller in 2013. He competed in the challenge each year of high school, shattering the previous record during his freshman year.

“I didn’t volunteer to do the milk chug during my freshman year. Another kid was supposed to do it. He backed out, and I was the only other one willing to do it,” said Miller. “I was pretty nervous to do it for the first time, and my only goal was to not get last. I didn’t think that I would beat the upperclassmen, so I was definitely shocked when it happened. People kept talking about it, and it was really exciting to be noticed by the seniors I looked up to.”

After severe injuries during the basketball season her junior year, Elaina Ededuwa chose not to give up the sport but to work hard to get back out on the court – which appears to be paying off. She has received attention from multiple colleges, including Indiana Wesleyan University, and intends to meet with coaches to discuss different scholarship opportunities.

Ededuwa tore her anterior cruciate ligament, or her ACL, mere minutes into a game her junior year. The following day, she was told she would have to sit out for four to six months, setting Ededuwa behind a few steps. Regardless, she worked hard and got back out on the court. Her first game back though, she got hit from the side and re-tore her ACL. Currently she is working hard to heal in order to get back out with her teammates.

“I’m working harder than I ever will,” said Ededuwa. “That way, I’ll get to play my senior year and hopefully not get injured. I want to be a good role model for the little girls in the stands and my teammates.”

“It felt good to win, but it also felt bad because I knew I was going to be sick, and that it was going to be hard the new few days,” said Epperson.

“But overall, I felt pretty good. I didn’t expect to win.”

Epperson plans to participate in the challenge throughout his high school career, hoping to win for the next two years. But winning isn’t everything for him; he is really just in it for the fun.

“I might practice a bit over the summer and do some training for next year,” said Epperson. “If I could give advice to anyone doing a milk challenge, I would say just have fun. It is definitely a team bonding thing, and I will continue to do it.”

ROARY: HSE'S #1 FAN Writer & Photographer / Keeley Miller Senior Cody Drudge is one of the biggest HSE fans. He is at almost every single major game, cheering on the team until the final buzzer. But Drudge has a bit of a different view – as the HSE mascot Roary the lion, he is on the field cheering.

“I heard from one of the cheerleaders that they were in need of a mascot, so I immediately volunteered because I knew I could fill that spot and be that guy,” said Drudge. “Being the mascot means you have to be enthusiastic 24/7, and being enthusiastic is my specialty.”

As Roary, Drudge is in charge of raising spirits, no matter what the score is. He goes to all major games and events, runs around taking pictures with fans and performing tricks. Hoping to leave behind a legacy as the best Roary, he works hard despite the heat and physical exertion that comes with the job.

“My goal for this year with being Roary is setting an example or a role for future Roarys," said Drudge. “I want to be known as HSE’s number one mascot in all of school history.”

THE ROAD TO THE WIN SENIOR GOLFER CIARA MCAREE WORKS HER WAY THROUGH THE MENTAL CHALLENGES OF THE GAME TO END UP PLACING AT STATE Writer / Summer Pratt Very easily, senior Ciara McAree could have been a soccer player. As an 8-year-old, McAree began attending summer camps for golf lessons but continued to play soccer regularly until her seventh grade year. She continued to play occasional golf over the summers for several years up until then when she joined the school team. When she reached the end of her eighth grade year though, McAree was forced to choose – soccer or golf.

After much debate, she chose golf for the amount of opportunities it could give her and went on to become the number one varsity girls player. However, it was not a quick and easy path. McAree tried out for the team her freshman year and played number five varsity.

Sometimes her score counted, other times it did not. Her sophomore year, she played number four but tended to be the lowest score for the group.

“It’s kind of bittersweet playing for a team,” said McAree. “It’s like if you play bad, you feel like you let your team down, but if you play well,

not only did you feel good individually but you also helped the team do well. You can’t just think about yourself. Like, ‘Oh, I have to make this putt for myself.’ No, you have to make it for your team too.”

Regardless of the challenges she faced her sophomore year, McAree came back her junior year and had the best season she has had yet – and moved on to All State, earning her place in the HSE Hall of Fame.

To the senior golfer, the feeling of satisfaction she feels after doing well is what keeps her going – not the competition or the fame.

“The feeling after having a good round, that’s what makes it worth it. You could have 12 bad rounds, but when you have that good round, it’s like everything comes together. It’s the best feeling in the world.”

McAree then took everything she learned from her first three years of high school golf and used it her senior year, earning 18th place overall at State. ”Golf is almost more mental than physical,” said McAree. “You can’t let your highs get too high and your lows get too low. You can’t celebrate too much after a good shot because then you have to go and focus on the next one.

[At State], there was the bad weather, the high expectations and the pressure of knowing that it was my last tournament. I was glad I had the opportunity to play. I just tried to stay positive and enjoy the ride.”

LEADING THE PACK SOPHOMORE GABE FENDEL LEADS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM DESPITE AGE Writer & Photographer / Keeley Miller Sophomore Gabe Fendel was surrounded by runners since he was born. His mother ran for the Brazil Olympic team. His father ran in college and is still an avid runner. Growing up in their footsteps, Fendel is now the fastest runner on HSE’s cross country team with a personal course record of 15:17 and numerous titles under his belt.

“I started running competitively in sixth grade, but I have been running for fun since third grade,” said Fendel. “The main reason that

I began to run is because my parents were runners, and they raised me in that lifestyle.”

Right before his freshman year, Fendel moved to Indiana and toured numerous schools including Carmel and Brebeuf Jesuit.

Ultimately, Fendel chose HSE. “I just really liked the program here as well as the school,” said Fendel. “The coaching here is amazing.”

After placing third at nationals during his first year of competitively running in sixth grade,

Fendel proved himself to be a value athlete as an incoming freshman. Fendel also placed second at nationals during his eighth grade year and took the title as the second fastest freshman in the nation in 2014.

As for now, Fendel is focusing on the state meet, which will take place in Terre Haute on the 31st.

“My main goal right now is for the team to win state,” Fendel said. “I want to get top ten overall at state or better, maybe even top five. I want to go out and see what I can do.”
