Next summer, two HSE swimmers will be traveling to Omaha, Nebraska to compete in one of the biggest swimming events in the nation – the Olympic Trials. Both senior Natalie Mudd and 2015 graduate Joe Young qualified for the trials through swimming for the Southeastern Swim Club.
“When I got the time for the 200 backstroke the time standards for the 2016 Olympic Trials had not come out yet since it was only 2014. However, I couldn’t stop smiling because I knew I was within the top 10 times in the country for my age group,” said Young. “I got the 100 backstroke cut this past summer. I dropped a lot of time in order to lower my personal record to 57.26, just .07 off of the qualifying time. As you could imagine, swimming the cut this time around made me overjoyed.”
Mudd qualified in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.16, almost a whole half second below the necessary qualification time. She dropped over a second from her old personal record in the event. “It was really hard. It was the worst pain of my life but I knew that I had to get through it,” said Mudd. “When I finished, I looked at the board and I couldn’t comprehend if it was the right time. But then I heard the coaches screaming and I knew that I got it. It was the best moment of my life, I had been working for years for this.” Young, who qualified in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 57.15 and the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.05, is currently
Both of these qualifications took years of hard work and dedication. Swimming, a year-round sport, requires hours of practice almost every day. “[The most difficult part about swimming is] swimming,” said Young. “Every practice can tear you down in ways you couldn’t ever imagine were possible… but some of my most memorable moments in high school are either in the pool or were made with acquaintances I’ve made through swimming.” Photo Contributed

ROBYN CLEVENGER While finishing her senior year, Robyn Clevenger has more to think about than just her grades. When she turned 8, she began swimming – something that may now be able to help her get into a college she never considered before. Clevenger has received multiple scholarship opportunities after her hard work and dedication to her sport. She has received the ‘Most Valuable Person’ award every year of her high school swimming career and broken records at both Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers High Schools. The previous record for the 50 meter freestyle was 23.20 seconds, which Clevenger completed in 23.00 seconds.

GIRLS SOCCER TEAM BRINGS BACK ALUMNI COACHING STAFF Writer & Photographer / Keeley Miller Three current members of the HSE Girls Soccer coaching staff have been proud Royals since before they were hired. Freshman Coach Meghan White and Varsity Assistant Coach Jacki Purcell both played for HSE Girls Soccer during high school. JV Coach Dan Ax had a daughter who played soccer at HSE, winning All State before graduating in 2004. “I have had seven coaches through my program that have all played for me,” said Head Coach Greg Davidson. “They understand our program. They loved our program, and now it is an opportunity to give back to the program. That they want to come back is very special to me.” The team brings back alumni by not only being one of the best teams
athletically in the state, but by bonding with teammates on and off the field. The family-style dynamic of the team pushes athletes to success while providing valuable friendships and life experience. “[Davidson] keeps in touch with the alumni, and they keep in touch with him,” said Ax. “If someone has a baby, everyone knows about it.” Senior players Brooke Barnes and Megan Boyd reflect this, even wanting to have the chance to come back and coach for the Royals in the future. “[Davidson] really emulates that family atmosphere here on top of his competitive nature and being a great soccer coach,” said Purcell. “He makes us a part of his family.”

SOCCER STANDOUT TYLER PARADIS
CHOOSES HSE OVER ELITE SOCCER TEAM Writer & Photographer / Keeley Miller After being approached by the U.S. Soccer Development Academy (DA), an elite club recruitment team, senior Tyler Paradis had to make a decision. Either he had to stay with the team that he had spent his entire high school career with or follow in the footsteps of previous Royals and try out for the DA.
from my cousins who played,” said Paradis. “The best part about soccer is the competitiveness. It is constant. There are not any breaks, so you have to go all the way.” Paradis has been playing with some members of his team since he began the sport through club soccer. He uses the friendships he has built with his team to improve their performance.
“The thing about the DA is that they play nationally. If you play for them, you can’t play high school,” said Paradis. “If I went to the DA, it would probably be better for colleges to see you, but I said no. I want to stay with my teammates for my senior year.”
“Knowing my teammates so well definitely helps,” said Paradis. “On the soccer field, you definitely need a lot of chemistry because you rely on them a lot. It is definitely a team sport, so staying with them definitely influenced my decision.”
While not an official member of the varsity team during his freshman year, Paradis has played during varsity games all four years of high school. Going into his senior year, he brings years of experience and skill to the team.
Going into the 2015 season, Paradis has high hopes that the team will win the state title.
“I have been playing soccer for as long as I can remember. I picked it up
