WHAT ATTRACTED WHAT MAKES YOUR YOU TO RESTAURANT RESTAURANT UNIQUE? Of course the fact that it is in one of OWNERSHIP? I’m absolutely passionate about food and cooking. My mother is a fabulous cook and always has been. She owned a pie shop when I was very little and still makes THE best pies!

You may have noticed Café Audrey, located in the former blacksmith shop on the Fort Benjamin Harrison property, has a new owner. Her name, like the former owner is Tammy…Tamela Jones….and we chatted with her recently.

YOU’VE NEVER OWNED A RESTAURANT BEFORE; THIS IS A NEW CAREER FOR YOU. WHY?

I have always wanted to own and operate a restaurant. The company I was working for had been recently purchased by a private investment firm and they made some changes to the organizational structure of the company. So I decided it was a good time for me to make the move toward restaurant ownership and my second career!

I had been in the Senior Housing and Services field since 1982 where Food and Beverage service is a crucial component, so running a restaurant is not unfamiliar to me.

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE LAWRENCE AND CAFÉ AUDREY?

I knew that I wanted a breakfast/lunch restaurant since I’m a morning person and I’ve always loved going out for breakfast.

From the first moment I stepped foot in Café Audrey, I knew I’d found what I was looking for. I’d never been in Fort Harrison before and didn’t even know that it existed.

But after learning about the plans for the reuse project, I knew I wanted to be a part of it and even bought a home in Watson Farms. What a great opportunity for the Café to grow along with the community!!

The community of Lawrence has been so warm and welcoming, too. We’ve found that people come to the Café because they enjoy the great food and service, but also because they want to support local business. That’s simply awesome!

the historic Fort buildings - the original blacksmith shop! The exposed brick walls and wooden floors create a warm and charming environment and the mismatched dinnerware and coffee mugs add to the homey feel. Also, I am very passionate about coffee and our self-serve coffee has become very popular. We brew at least 4 different kinds of locally-roasted coffee each day and people can help themselves as often as they wish to try the different coffees. For me, top quality coffee is a MUST at a breakfast/ brunch restaurant.

WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT TO FIND ON THE MENU?

We make as many items as possible can from scratch and will continue to add more.

We have ‘from scratch’ soups, desserts and ‘real potato/not frozen’ french fries plus fried potatoes and potato salad. Quiche, chicken salad, egg salad, coleslaw, pancakes, French toast and many other items are all from scratch as well—no mixes! We are very proud of that and know that our customers appreciate the fresh tastes.

The bottom line is, we want people to feel at home and enjoy simple, made-from-scratch food. That’s our passion!

Phoenix has a footprint in Ohio where 25 employees in Cincinnati are working on a classified federal contract. Curran is bidding on a new contract that would create about 350 jobs in another state. Sales of its services are approaching $10 million and Curran predicts a Phoenix expansion could happen in the near future. “The atmosphere [in Lawrence] is right, availability of services is right, we’re comfortable. Everybody loves where we are,” she says. “Lawrence is convenient to downtown and to the interstate highways. I enjoy Lawrence.”

Chamber of Commerce president Jessica Tower calls Curran a dynamic, inspiring woman. “She has taken her business to new heights of success. In return, her success is a success for Lawrence. Phoenix is creating jobs with substantial median incomes,” says Tower. “Technology businesses continue to reside in the Lawrence area and our community is fortunate to have a tech firm such as Phoenix Data Corporation at its epicenter.”

At age 70, Curran hasn’t slowed. Hardly.

She holds a captain’s license for a 43-foot sailboat, and continues to ski and sail.

It’s been a good ride for the Arsenal Tech and IU Bloomington business grad who credits her success to doing things the right way, and to the good work of her fellow employees. “I take comfort in knowing that I’m providing a living for them and their families. I can’t retire—they’re family—I can’t let them go. It takes all of us, not just me. And, we do well.”

Becoming a crime statistic is one of the worst feelings imaginable. It’s like a quick punch to the gut that leaves a nasty, empty feeling behind. I’ve been there. You may have too.

The morning I realized my car had been stolen, I felt unlucky and possibly cursed (the same car had been burglarized a couple months prior).

At the time, I told myself I needed to take more precautions to ensure my personal safety.

Fast-forward more than a decade.

On the way to work several weeks ago, I saw the aftermath of a shooting at the edge of my usually quiet subdivision. It was enough to refuel my desire to be proactive.

I took part in a Women’s Self Defense Seminar hosted by Fishers-based Krav Maga Indy.

On a rainy Saturday afternoon, we crowded inside a hot martial arts studio to learn the basics of self-defense.

Aged 18 to retirement, we took turns hammering our fists into boxing pads and pushing our partners off of us.

Some of us giggled during sparring, feeling slightly embarrassed and hoping this will ready us in case the occasion should arise.

“We love the groin,” Instructor Jeff Fredericksen tells us. “It solves a lot of problems.”

The women around me share looks of bewilderment and surprise.

“The eyes are another point to aim for when all else fails,” he continues, putting his hand over his sparring partner’s face.

He goes on to demonstrate how to effectively strike those areas of the body in a myriad of situations.

Fredericksen is an expert—he’s the Head Instructor at the state’s only official Krav Maga Worldwide training center.

Fredericksen opened the center in 2008 and has trained law enforcement at the local, state, and federal levels.

Krav Maga originated in Israel in the late 1940s/early 1950s as a means of military

training in a short span of time. It was brought to the U.S. in 1981.

Fredericksen offered the class several key takeaways, rooted in common sense: 1. Awareness: People often fall prey to criminals simply because they’re not

paying attention. Fredericksen says always be looking around, especially when you’re alone in a public place like a mall parking lot.

2. Body Language: Stand tall, walk with purpose, and look confident. The less fear you show in your face and body, the less likely you are to become a target.

3. Have An Escape Route: Know where the exits are and how fast you can get to them in your home, school, or office.

4. Tell the Story: Fredericken says if you do end up in a hostile situation, tell the story. He likened it to bathing a cat.

“When you try to put your cat in the tub, it becomes very vocal,” he laughs, but he has a point. Yelling and describing what’s happening to you can be the difference between life or death.

The overarching theme is simple: “Get home alive.”

WALK FOR WOMEN’S LUNG HEALTH AWARENESS Writer / Kara Reibel

On Oct. 18, the American Lung Association is holding an inaugural LUNG FORCE walk to raise awareness for women’s lung health with a focus on lung cancer. “LUNG FORCE is a new initiative to make lung cancer in women a public health priority, to drive policy change and to increase research funding,” says Sheena Lee, Special Events Manager for the American Lung Association in Indiana.

Lung cancer is the most deadly form of cancer for women, and prevention is a major part of the cure, but not always. In Carrie Aloisio’s case, she acquired a rare form of lung cancer without ever lifting a cigarette to her mouth, with zero family history, and without being consciously exposed to secondhand smoke or any other known factors. “It began with a cough,” she says. “The cough progressed, and before I knew it, I was having surgery to remove the majority of my right lung.” Her final diagnosis came only after surgery: mucoepidermoid carcinoma. She was 38 years old at the time. Luckily her form of lung cancer is rare, occurring in less than 0.1 percent of all cases and does not require chemotherapy or radiation.

The surgery to remove her lung occurred in May of 2013, and as soon as she could, she went back to what she loved: running. She was a runner before the diagnosis, having just started running halfmarathons like the Geist Half. Of course, after surgery, and with TOWNEPOST MEDIA NETWORK / OCTOBER 2014 / TownePost.com

adapting to having only one lung, she was learning to walk again and slowly building up her strength. Aloisio was able to run her first half-marathon 11 months later, which occurred in April of this year. “I wanted to finish a race before the one-year mark of my operation,” states Aloisio. “That was my goal and I did it!”

Diane Tetrick came from a family of smokers. Of course they smoked, with a family legacy of tobacco farmers from Kentucky. However,she has never taken a puff, but she had been exposed to secondhand smoke. Her dad died after losing a horrible battle with lung cancer.

Tetrick’s sister, Barbara, died on the operating table because of lung cancer; she had been a smoker. Tetrick, now 63 years old, has been in remission for the last two years.

The first symptom for Tetrick was also a cough—a nagging one that wouldn’t go away. Having a sister who had just died from lung cancer, she insisted on a CT scan. Two spots were discovered, so portions of each lung were removed, with her family by her side. Marvin, Tetrick’s husband who is retired from GM, and their kids, were there with her throughout the process. Their son, Marty, an Army warrant officer, and their daughter, Mindy, a teacher at Center Grove, are a source of pride and resilience for their parents.

A spiritual woman with a strong faith and married 46 years to her high school sweetheart, Tetrick is tough and takes it as it comes—with optimism. And even though she found out that another surgery is required, she is ready. She has staying power and possesses all the signs of a positive outcome.

These are only a couple examples of survivor stories. There are plenty of others who are running their own race of sorts.

Dick Wolfsie, the jocular word-slinging wizard, has just released his 13th book titled, The Right Fluff: Weightless Observations About Life on Earth. A HOOSIER TAKES ON BULLYING WITH A STRONG DOSE OF MOJO The word ‘epidemic’ is thrown around rather casually when describing current events in American culture. “We have an epidemic of obesity in the U.S.” (true).

“There’s an epidemic of Bieber Fever in America” (not so much). The word epidemic, however, may well apply to the incidence of, and conversation about, bullying. Certainly national media coverage has branded bullying and its outcomes as epidemic. Indeed, October is National Bullying Prevention Month an initiative to “encourage everyone to take an active role in the bullying prevention movement,” according to the organization’s web site.

This year’s theme is entitled, The End of Bullying Begins With Me—which brings us to Travis Brown.

Our younger readers might know Brown, 38, as Mr. Mojo who, through his company Mojo Up, Inc., travels the nation giving antibullying presentations to students in grades kindergarten through college. Brown’s Mr. Mojo persona has landed him national media attention including an appearance on MTV’s Made program. His mission is to “empower individuals to make a difference, while learning to accept and respect themselves and others” proclaims the Mojo Up anti-bullying program web site.

“Bullying is an issue in every school,” explained the Fishers resident in a recent telephone interview with Lawrence Community Newsletter. “Some schools are worse than others. Sometimes kids turn to

violence to deal with it. Shootings many times are related to bullying. Suicide is also a problem.” Less violent but equally troubling are problems with truancy. Central to Mr. Mojo’s message is that everyone needs to speak up—including students who are aware of, but not actually participating in the bullying. “A lot think they can’t make a difference. They can.”

What’s needed, says Brown, are more schools willing to invest in effective tools to address both the bullies and those they pick on. “Schools are not ready to admit they have a problem in their buildings and don’t want to invest in the needed resources. I help them build a program that improves its culture,” Brown says.

As of this writing, Brown is in discussions with Lawrence public schools to provide teachers and administrators with his antibullying toolkit—a comprehensive program that, according to Brown’s web site, costs $1,000. “Yes, I am compensated. But there certainly are associated costs. Last year I spent $60,000 on travel,” explains Brown, who also provides no-cost programming for schools and organizations. Sponsorships from Klipsch, Herff Jones and Office Depot Foundation also help pay the bills.

Thanks to a recent legislative mandate, Indiana schools must provide education related to bullying prevention. However, Brown’s perspective is that it’s simply not enough. “A lot of schools are only doing

the minimum requirements, when a comprehensive approach is needed,” says Brown. “Indiana requires training—it’s a great first step. But it doesn’t mean doing what it takes to create a safe environment.”

Drew Keller calls Brown one of his best friends. The Lawrence-area realtor grew up with Travis in Lafayette, and has watched with admiration as Mr. Mojo has grown into what Drew calls the top anti-bullying speaker in the country. “All of us have been bullied, or faced intimidation. I’ve been on both sides,” admits Keller. “Travis explains how to deal with these situations, and that you’re not alone. He’s effective, including having saved kids lives. He gets messages from suicidal kids.”

Brown, who concedes that he too has been on both sides of the bullying experience, once believed that things happened that were “just a part of life.” But he came to realize bullying is unacceptable on all fronts, in all places. “It doesn’t matter where you live. Jamie Foxx asked me to speak at his kids’ school. You think it doesn’t happen there. But it does. A vast range of kids are affected,” Brown says. He is, however, hopeful for the future as anti-bullying legislation is toughened and awareness continues to grow. “I’m convinced bullying will decline if we’re able to equip kids and school administrations with the right tools.”

GOOD PEOPLE, GOOD CAUSES: KIDS’ VOICE OF INDIANA In more than 90% of the cases presented, the courts follow the Kids’ Voice recommended path, due to the excellent due diligence provided.

They advocate first for the children, but also recommend help for the families. Even after the case is complete, they follow up regularly from 6 months to 5 years afterward, filing reports with the court.

And this is all on a non-for-profit basis, through the three main programs they offer:

Their brochure states, “Children at risk need a strong voice.” That is what Kids’ Voice of Indiana was created for. They protect atrisk children’s best interests through advocacy, information and education, serving more than 5000 children and families each year through various programs. At any given time, more than 100 Guardian ad Litem cases are active, handled by four in-house attorneys and others who volunteer their time and expertise (more than 3500 hours of pro bono work last year).

In short, the worst cases in civil courts, where there are allegations of abuse, educational neglect and other forms of abuse and/or neglect are turned over to Kids’ Voice rather than being thrown out of court or requiring services from the State Department of Child Services. Often after a domestic violence case or homicide or suicide there are children left behind. Kids’ Voice is usually the last resort, but the judges trust that the Kids’ Voice track record will provide families with good answers and point them toward needed services for assistance.

“We save the courts a lot of time,” commented President/CO Eddie Rivers. “We provide a holistic view of the child’s situation, with all the reports, home studies, interviews and evidence to back it up.”

1. The Children’s Law Center, founded by Derelle Watson-Duvall in 1982. The statewide program provides education and training on legal issues such as adoption, delinquency, guardianship, paternity establishment, Guardian ad Litem services and more.

2. The Bette J. Dick Guardian ad Litem for Kids program represents the best interests of 200-300 children per year. The program recruits, trains and supports volunteers who conduct extensive investigations and prepare detailed reports to the courts for the children. This program is appointed by Marion County Courts when issues of abuse, neglect or endangerment have been raised and regularly serve children who live in Lawrence.

3. The Supervised Parent-Child Visitation Program provides costeffective supervised visitation for parents and their children. In 2014, this program provided over 500 hours of supervised safe on-site visits which are fully documented for the court.

Kids’ Voice of Indiana is funded mostly through donations, helping families who for the most part are low income and can’t afford to pay.

If you like to get something free, the leaders of Horizon Christian Fellowship are happy to oblige with no-cost food and family entertainment from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, at the ninth annual Harvest Festival.

The Harvest Festival is a community outreach program of the Horizon Christian Fellowship, a church, school and Bible college at 7702 Indian Lake Road, Indianapolis.

“We usually have 800 to 1,000 people (at the festival), and we’d love to have more,” said Todd Melloh, Horizon’s development director. This year’s event will feature hayrides, face painting, carnival games, music, live entertainment and food.

“It’s an alternative to Halloween, so the kids come dressed up in costumes,” the Rev. Bill Goodrich said.

Goodrich also said the Harvest Festival is just one of several activities and ministries

Horizon provides for the community.

For example, Horizon hosts an annual invitational cross-country meet for junior high and high school athletes.

“We have one of the best cross-country courses in the city,” Goodrich pointed out.

Other outreach activities include Camp Indy, a popular summer day camp on Horizon’s 98-acre grounds. Approximately 300 children attend, Melloh said.

Horizon, which recently celebrated its 26th anniversary, wasn’t always this large, Christian community that seeks to welcome anyone to its large campus. Goodrich said Horizon began humbly, as a Bible study in his and his wife Vi’s living room. Only five people attended that first meeting in July 1988.

Goodrich believes that God sent him and his wife from San Diego to Indianapolis.

“He (God) took us out of California (to start a church), but it took a year to take the California out of us,” he recalled with a chuckle. “We did it out of obedience.”

Starting a church was a big undertaking.

Goodrich said while organizing the church he and his wife faced several challenges.

Those challenges included losing his job because the company he worked for went bankrupt. He briefly thought he might have displeased God in some way.

“I confessed every sin I could think of,” Goodrich said.

Eventually, the tiny congregation grew and moved to a rented facility. The number of church-goers increased and the need for their own facility became apparent.

“The Lord led us out here. This was a retreat center for the Disciples of Christ,” Goodrich recalled. “We bought it and moved in July of 1991.”

The current kindergarten through 12th-grade school and church building was built in 1996.

The church is affiliated with Calvary Chapels, an organization of autonomous churches, Goodrich said.
