The Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce (GLCC) has a stated goal of promoting commerce among Chamber members and within the community at large. Lawrence Community Newsletter interviewed a prominent board member this month to see (in the words of Dr. Phil) “How’s that working for you?”

Jim Huguenard, owner of Lighten Your Load Concierge Services, is the longestserving board member, this year completing his third two-year term. As a mechanical engineer who had been downsized one too many times, he decided to take control of his own future and opened his company seven years ago in April of 2007.

has been instrumental in the growth of his business. He recalled a conversation he’d had with Sandi Ballard, former chamber executive director, who advised him that a small business might get lost in the hundreds of large companies involved with the Indianapolis Chamber, but that businesses have the opportunity to stand out in a smaller chamber such as Lawrence. Since joining the GLCC, Huguenard has volunteered and participated in chamber events and feels more visible, making his membership effective. “The GLCC should be one of the first inquiries for a business looking into the area,” said Huguenard, adding that the chamber is the tourism department for Lawrence business, with a finger on the pulse on how to maneuver permits, etc. as well.

As for the growth of Lawrence during his six years on the board, Huguenard has seen

a shift towards growth in more than just apartment communities, but said there’s still room for more growth. “Visitors leaving the state park need to be able to find more restaurants other than fast food,“ he said, adding that the entrance to Lawrence should be 56th Street, not Pendleton Pike, since the pike is a state highway making it harder to control the aesthetics. He feels the focal point of the community should be more at 56th and Post, especially with the possibility of a new library and other commercial developments there.

Lawrence has grown in diversity as well, and Huguenard wishes there was also more diversity in those who participate in chamber activities, subtly stating that, “you get more out of an organization when you become involved.”

ANGIE CAIN NATIONAL CHAMPION OF CHANGE Writer / Kathi Moore

“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. What I can do, I should do. And what I should do, by the grace of God, I will do.”_ Edward Everett Hale It seems like Edward Hale had Angie Cain in mind when he penned those stirring words in the early 1800s. Born nearly 30 years ago with Down syndrome, Angie and her family ignored the dim diagnosis, and moved forward well beyond most people’s expectations. In so doing, Angie has been an inspiration to a growing circle of people, winning awards from the Colts, YMCA, and the Down Syndrome Society (Angie was their first volunteer.)

Now, Angie has been nominated for the National Down Syndrome Society’s annual Champion of Change Award for Self Advocacy.

She and her family planned to travel to Washington, DC for the award ceremony and to participate in the annual Best Buddies Walk on Washington.

Harrison YMCA, cleaning towels and doing minor maintenance Weds: Gets a ride downtown to Down syndrome office to volunteer Thurs: Works morning volunteering at Community North Hospital, then afternoons at the Best Buddies, Indiana office as Buddy Director for Butler University and general Buddy ambassador Fri: Volunteers at The Hearth at Windermere assisted living facility, then spends the night there with her grandmother Angie’s mother, Beth Becher, says they always had high expectations for Angie, the youngest in a large blended family.

Angie snow skis, has gone skydiving, and recently willed herself to lose nearly 40 pounds through a rigorous workout schedule and food portion control, plus eliminating sweets from her diet. She does occasionally relax, enjoying movies and weekly trips to the library.

According to the National Society for Down syndrome, the condition occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome. One in every 691 babies in the US is born with Down syndrome, and more than 400,000 people live with it in the United States, with varying degrees of disability.

“She’s always been my inspiration,” commented Becher, explaining her daughter’s ‘can-do’ positive attitude which never seems to wane.

The family is also honoring Angie’s 30th birthday this year by dubbing 2014 as Angie’s year. They are asking friends/family/ businesses to contribute to DSI (Down Syndrome Indiana) for the upcoming Buddy Walk this November, as a pay-it-forward opportunity. Her team is Angie’s Army.

Kathi Moore, a career marketer and public relations director, has a natural curiosity that leads her in many different directions and helps to provide ideas for her writing. She and her husband have 3 children, 3 dogs and 3 cats.

LC TALENT LIGHTEN UP AMERICAN IDOL & PRIMETIME TV Writer / Meredith Nordmann, L.C. Cub reporter

Lawrence Central High School is strongly represented in today’s Hollywood scene with Marrialle Sellars in the top 15 girls on “American Idol” and Hilary Ward who has been in numerous shows and commercials including this season’s CBS series “Criminal Minds.” Both stars now, humbled by their Hoosier upbringings and proud of their strong roots from LC. Currently a senior at LC, “Idol” judge favorite Sellars kicked off the season premiere as the first person to earn a Golden Ticket to Hollywood and is now one of the top 15 girls out of 212 contestants who made it to Hollywood. But even with her newfound fame, school has not taken a backseat as she still plans on walking with her graduating class and is enrolled in four classes at LC.

“It was great to grow up in a place not so preoccupied with this industry, it made me realize how fortunate I am and keeps me grounded” “School has been so supportive and understanding of my schedule, it is very important that I do not get too behind in my schoolwork,” Sellars said. She has been musically involved at LC all of her high school career as a member of Central Sound, Sweet Sensations, and Expressions. Sellars says that she will miss competing in Show Choir competitions as well but still helps out when she can behind the scenes such as designing costumes.

Sellars grew up with her dad being her main musical inspiration who always encouraged her to test her limits and explore different areas of music. She started singing and playing instruments at a very young age and now plays the guitar, piano, ukelele, cello, and bass. Sellars also says that her fifth grade teacher was one of her influential mentors who surprised her with her appearance at a Fox59 television interview.

LC graduate of 1995, Ward is now making a leap in the acting industry. She has lived in California since 2007, as an actress, filmmaker, and audition coach. She appeared in Feb. 5 episode of Criminal Minds as well as making guest appearances on series such as “CSI: Miami” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” but has not forgotten her years of being a Bear.

“It was great to grow up in a place not so preoccupied with this industry, it made me realize how fortunate I am and keeps me grounded,” Ward said. “Growing up with parents who had stable jobs and not living next to someone famous has made me very lucky.”

During her high school career, Ward was known as being a driven and involved student as a member of student council, Brain Game, theater, and performer in the Central Sound. Acting had always been her hobby but it wasn’t until after college, where she majored in education at Indiana University, that she decided to pursue her talent.

Richard Phillipy, who is an LC teacher, Brain Game coach, and friend of Ward’s said, “Hilary is a wonderful example for young people by showing that perseverance can get you very far in life, even in the acting industry.”

[Editor’s note: Marrialle Sellars’ run with American Idol ended following the first week of live performances in Hollywood. Still, she was one of the final fifteen girls from among the tens of thousands who had auditioned.

BOOK RE-OPENED ON NEW LAWRENCE LIBRARY BRANCH Writer / Neal G. Moore

Lawrence library watchers may recall momentum several years ago for a proposal to build a library branch somewhere on the Ft. Ben property – likely near 56th Street and Lee Road. But like a novel with a bad plot line the narrative fell apart, primarily because of retrenchment by the library board on the heels of an expensive legal spat related to poor concrete work at the central library’s parking garage. The book slammed shut on the Lawrence library expansion story, and sadly, it was non-fiction.

Now, there is renewed talk about constructing a second library branch in Lawrence Township. The conversation is the outgrowth of the county library system’s long-term strategic plan. Among the plan’s recommendations is the addition of a second branch to increase services and reduce gaps in service areas in Lawrence Township. “We spent the last two years trying to figure out what to do [in Lawrence],” explained Jackie Nytes, during a meeting with interested residents including Mayor Dean Jessup that was held at the library branch on Hague Road. The library CEO added, “It’s important to understand that this branch (Hague Rd.) is going to get some improvements, but it’s not going to double in size. Instead, we’re going to need to put the resources into a second Lawrence Township location.”

However, approval and funding processes will likely take as long, and be as complicated, as plowing through Tolstoy’s War and Peace. “A second Lawrence branch could be four or five years away,” said Betsy Crawford, resource manager for the system’s east side branches. That’s because Marion County voters would likely need to approve a referendum to increase library taxes.

To counter increased costs for a Lawrence branch and other library initiatives, Nytes intends to “get out of the business of paying rent” at several locations. These branches would move to more costeffective locales. And, in the next couple of years several library bonds will come off the books freeing up revenue to service new bond issues. “We’re going to have to look for ways to work smart,” Nytes said. “We’ll continue to look for the kind of partnerships that will make this possible. We’ve had some great conversations with the Fort Harrison Reuse Authority.”

No location has been identified, although “everybody agrees that [the fort] would be great,” Crawford said. “The people of Lawrence wanted us to do this. I’m still asked about what happened before.

“The sense of camaraderie and support is amazing,” she said. One returning woman is a 60-year survivor. Other marchers will be newly diagnosed.

Volunteers have fun while helping support the cause. Borges is in her 14th year on the executive committee. “It really is a sense of family. I feel very fortunate to be part of that group,” she said. “I’ve loved every minute of it.”

The survivors and volunteers connect during the event. Jeff Saturday, a former Colts center, arrives yearly with his wife, Karen, as Honorary Race Chairs to open the parade of survivors.

“They’re very dynamic. I call it the real deal,” Borges said. The couple reaches out and visits with survivors, showing how much they care.

This June, the Indiana University School of Nursing will celebrate its 100th anniversary. The year will also mark the 10th year for Marion Broome, Ph.D., serving as the dean. An IBJ “Woman of Influence” in 2011, Dr. Broome began her nursing career in the Army, where she was stationed at Fort Gordon in Georgia.

She was assigned to a pediatric unit and knew instinctively this would be her career focus. It was there that she met her husband, Capt. Carroll Broome. He was a member of the signal corps and is a Vietnam veteran.

Students currently enrolled at the Tubman National Institute for Medical Arts at JFK Medical Center will complete their degree at the University of Liberia. An IU nursing alum, Wvannie Scott-McDonald, Ph.D., who is Liberian, received her master’s degree and her doctorate at the IU School of Nursing at IUPUI. It was through Dr. Scott-McDonald’s efforts and initiative that this school liaison was achieved. Dr. Scott-McDonald’s cousin is the president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who was awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.

Abroad or stateside, Dr. Broome indicates that preparing students for their careers in nursing is the single most important role of IU’s nursing school. With the dynamics in health care continually changing, creativity and flexibility of health care providers is a must. Dr. Broome, throughout her tenure, has witnessed changes in nursing care as well as foreseen changes to come, adapting as necessary to meet demands and to be ahead of the curve.

Research is an important component of IU’s nursing school. IU focuses on symptom management with studies focused on helping individuals maintain or improve their quality of life. Recently in the news, attention has focused on a current study of music therapy with teens experiencing chemotherapy. In an article by the BBC News, “Making Music Videos Helps Young Cancer Patients Cope,” IU music therapist nurse researchers, led by Dr. Joan Haase and Dr. Sheri Robb, found the patients gained resilience and improved relationships with family and friends. All the patients were

undergoing high-risk stem cell transplant treatments. To produce their music videos, the young patients were asked to write song lyrics, record sounds and collect video images to create their story.

In another study, the nursing school is examining the experience of diabetic teens transitioning from high school to college.

Dr. Kathleen Hanna’s study of these teens may help others transition to managing their own care independently. IU’s nursing school is also studying cognitive changes in women during and after chemotherapy.

Little known fact: Audrey Geisel (widow of Theodore “Dr. Seuss” Geisel) is a graduate of IU’s nursing school and received her honorary doctorate in 2005.

Not only is June the 100th anniversary of the nursing school, but Dr. Broome and her husband, Dr. Carroll Broome, have another major event to celebrate: their daughter’s wedding. Drs. Broome have two grandsons from their son and daughter-in-law.

A passion for the community and for those who experience extreme financial hardship is what spurred Leon Riggs to start the United Hope Foundation back in 2005. He was determined to give back to the local community by offering people a second chance…a glimmer of hope when all seemed hopeless. Riggs was no stranger to second chances, after a serious airplane accident in the ‘70s left him paralyzed from the waist down. Miraculously he was able to recover and lead a very successful life, so ‘giving back’ became his life’s passion.

Riggs was CEO of LOR Corporation, a commercial real estate company, whose portfolio included 24 United Package Liquor stores, so he had a strong base of people and dollars to start his philanthropy.

Since 2005 the foundation has raised and donated nearly $1.5 million to individuals, families and other local non-profits.

Today, Riggs’ grandson Adam Hill is in charge. In an effort to expand and focus on the real estate portfolio, they sold the liquor stores to Big Red Liquors in March of 2013. Now, Hill and LOR Corporation

are creating opportunities through commercial real estate development.

The United Hope Foundation continues as a giving foundation. “We find people who have slipped through the cracks,” says Hill, foundation president. “They may not qualify for certain services, but we can lend a helping hand and provide some hope.”

The foundation specializes in helping individuals and families experiencing extreme hardship. “It’s difficult sometimes to raise money because we have such a broad mission. We’ve been very fortunate to be able to help so many people in need over the years,” says Hill.

United Hope finds needy through word of mouth; people who suddenly can’t pay their utilities, their rent, etc. But, the foundation also donates to the Early Learning Centers of Lawrence Township, Noble of Indiana, Riley Children’s Hospital, Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana Foundation and other not for profits within the community.

Organizations notify the foundation of a family in crisis, or someone submits an

immediate need to the board. They tend to fund a few per month, on a case-bycase basis. The foundation board decides if it meets the mission of “supporting individuals and families facing extreme hardship, as well as supporting local 501(c) 3 organizations with similar goals.”

“We’d like to thank the Lawrence community for making this possible for the past nine years,” emphasized Hill. “We count on donations to help with the dollars that LOR Corporation also puts forth.”

L

awrence North boys basketball coach Jack Keefer is probably more Norman Dale than Vince Lombardi – you know, a “play the game the right way” kind of guy.

But, winning also has its merits. Keefer recently notched his 700th varsity basketball win, and is currently sixth on Indiana’s all-time winningest coaches list. “He’s had a dynasty here,” marveled former Wildcat and Keefer protégé Eric Montross, who recently attended an LN reception honoring the coach’s long, successful career. “700 victories is an incredible milestone – it’s just remarkable.”

Equally remarkable – and widely acknowledged – is the top-notch quality of play on the courts of Lawrence Township’s three high schools (LC, LN and Cathedral.) LC boasts four former boys Indiana All-Stars, and one girls All-Star. The late “Stormin’ Norman” Sloan played for Lawrence Central, was an Indiana All-Star, played at North Carolina State University, and was a successful college coach for 38 seasons including stints with Florida and NC State. LN’s Montross, Mike Conley and Greg Oden played major college basketball and in the NBA. iHigh.com reports that 12 LN players have been named to the Indiana AllStar team, including one Mr. Basketball. Three have been McDonald’s All-Americans, and 74 have played college basketball.

Keefer points to a culture of hoops excellence that traces its roots to middle, even elementary schools. “We’ve got a great feeder system here.

Lawrence Township is as big as Washington Township, and they only have one high school.

But, we split our players,” Keefer noted. “Then you find a Montross. Well gee whiz, there’s four years of good basketball.” It also helps when you have legendary players as role models.

“Oden, Connelly – the younger kids work very hard to be like them. It rubs off,” added Keefer, who has been LN’s coach for 38 seasons.

While the vast majority of the township’s hardwood elite won’t make it to the pros, many do move on to play for top-flight college programs. “Those high schools are basketball factories – LN in particular. It’s a tribute to the coaches,” said Rick Bolus, who maintains the

High Potential Recruiting Service, a ranking of the nation’s best high school basketball prospects.

Two current Lawrence Township cagers hold lofty positions on Bolus’ High Potential list: Lawrence North senior Daeshon Francis and Lawrence Central sophomore Kyle Guy. Four others merited a mention: Terell Davis, a 6-5 senior, Lawrence North; Antoyne Jackson, a 6-4 sophomore, Lawrence Central; Colin Barthel, a 6-7 senior, Cathedral High School; and Justin Baker, a 5-9 senior also at Cathedral.

Francis is a 6-3 shooting guard who has accepted a scholarship to play for University of Wisconsin-Green Bay beginning next season.

“He’s a very athletic player with the ability to score and defend, and who’s had good coaching,” said Bolus in a recent telephone interview. “I always knew that LN produced great players who went on and played at the next level,” Daeshon said. “Coach Keefer has helped me get to where I wanted to go.”

Guy is an up and coming 6-2 combo guard who’s had early interest from IU, Purdue, Butler, UCLA, Ohio State, and Michigan among other blue-chip programs. “He’s already showing signs of being a D-1 player. It’s just a matter of what level. Let’s see where he is as a senior,” offered Bolus. “He’s just a good all around guard; very versatile; a good shooter.”

Like Daeshon, Kyle is keenly aware of the township’s hardwood legacy. “There’s always great talent coming out of both high schools.

I assume that after Daeshon and I are gone, many more players will be coming through,” he said.

Bolus ranks Indianapolis among the nation’s top five cities for high school basketball talent (Chicago ranks first because of the sheer number of schools there.) “I see basketball coast to coast, and the top state for coaching is Indiana,” Bolus said. “Indiana coaches work harder on the fundamentals. In a lot of states, schools are just happy to have a coach. In Indiana it is a different story. You gotta win,” Bolus added.

Our Hoosier sensibility, however, prefers that the winning be done the right way. And Montross said look no further than Coach Keefer. “He instilled hard work in all of us, and an expectation of excellence,” said Montross, now retired after eight seasons in the NBA. “He let us know that if we were given the tools, we were expected to use them to the best of our ability. He pushed us the right way – to be better, and to learn, and to be good teammates.

All of us really valued the time and instruction we had with Jack.”

Keefer’s reputation as a coaching guru extends well beyond the Indiana border. “I can’t go anywhere without somebody calling me coach,” Keefer said. “They know we’re here. I had some guy in Wisconsin call who said, ‘we may be moving to Indianapolis. You coached Mike Connelly, didn’t you? I might want to bring my boy by.’” With Keefer having stalked court sidelines for 41 years, one might conclude that the wily Wildcat has had enough. One would be wrong. “I could be in Florida suckin’ some lemonade right now, but it’s fun,” said a smiling Keefer. “My son, Jake, is only a sophomore, and I wanted him to experience some of this.”

Keefer, for now, is king of Lawrence Township basketball. But it’s a reasonable assumption that when coach Jack is finally sipping his Florida lemonade, the township’s hard-earned hardwood excellence will continue with a new breed of coach, player and fan.

One of the city’s most important assets is something you can’t see – at least not in the traditional sense. Typically, municipalities point to a high-profile sports arena or state-of-the-art airport as tangible evidence of growth, even relevance. In Lawrence, the asset is water – and plenty of it.

Lawrence Township sits over three large aquifers – the happy result of pre-historic glaciers that stopped their southern creep about mid-state. To the south, underground water sources are relatively scarce, but central and northern Indiana are what engineers call a kind of sponge. “Lawrence doesn’t have a water source problem – at the moment,” explained John Solenberg, the city’s utilities superintendent.

Lawrence has 11 wells pumping on average 4.4 million gallons of water – equal to our daily usage. During dry, hot periods demand jumps to more than six million gallons. And, future growth projections for Lawrence and surrounding communities have prompted an expansion of the city’s water filtration capability.

As a pre-emptive measure, work is scheduled to begin this spring on a $4.1 million water treatment plant at 5450 Richardt St., where a new water office and lab are already in place. When completed, the plant will increase water production capability to about six million gallons a day. The water utility’s director of operations, Scott Salsbery, said the end game is to have a reliable and safe water supply. “You have to have the wells, the treatment capacity and the distribution system. So, looking down the road with Lawrence being built out – if you were to get some kind of major industrial customer here, and if we have some business changes, we’re going to have to be able to meet that demand.”

As of this writing, how to pay for the project was still being worked out. “We don’t have [the money] sitting in the bank. It could be a bond,” said Solenberg adding, “It doesn’t look like we’ll need a change (an increase) in utility rates.” Completion of the new plant in expected in summer 2015.

Solenberg said an engineering study of the most recent census indicated that Lawrence would be completely built out by 2035 with an estimated population of 57,000 residents. Water demand could increase to perhaps eight million gallons per day in 20 years.

“They’re talking about huge population growth as the economy changes in Fishers, Carmel, Geist and areas north that would put a draw on the water system to the north, which impacts us,” explained Solenberg.
