Jennifer Marden loves books. As a teacher with twenty years of experience, used books have always had a special place in her heart. Last November, she acted on a long-time dream and opened Chapter 2 Books in the Geek Street area of downtown Kokomo. The store was thriving when the coronavirus crisis hit.

Marden was initially frightened about how the resulting retail shutdown would affect her business, but she has been able to use her personal strengths to persevere through the uncertain time.

“Opening a used book store was something I always wanted to do and my husband was very supportive,” she says. “Still, when the store opened in November, I was scared to death. Then I watched in awe when people came in and wanted books. Things were going great and every month it was getting better.

We were doing well for a brand-new business.”

Suddenly the coronavirus outbreak began, and Marden was scared.

“I had spent some years as a school counselor and I knew that when things aren’t going well, the best thing is to sit back and think logically,” she says. “I had never worked retail and I had to think about the skills I had. I knew kids did not have access to books since school and the library were closed. I had spent years

picking out books for kids, so I built on that.”

To Marden, who came to Kokomo to begin her teaching career at Western School Corporation in 2000, access to books is critical for children. Over the years, she gathered books from estate sales, other used book stores, and donations from people who knew she was a teacher. She began contributing damaged books to the UP programs of Kokomo Urban Outreach, as well as churches and other organizations. That endeavor prompted the idea of offering curated book bags that could be delivered throughout the community.

“Recommending books is a big part of my classroom,” Marden says. “We began selling bags of books that were picked out for people based on their interests. People order them and they love being surprised.

I take a lot of time and effort with each bag. It’s like picking out a gift. We are pleased with how it’s gone and we will continue it now that we are open.”

The book bags offer value for customers, since the books are more expensive if purchased individually. Depending on the size of the books, a $10 bag contains three to four selections and a $20 bag has seven to nine. Delivery is available within Kokomo.

Procedures at the store are now slightly different than before the pandemic.

Marden limits the number of customers inside and face masks are recommended.

Trade-ins are accepted for credit of up to 50% off of a subsequent customer purchase, and trade-in books are currently

set aside for a quarantine period. In addition, books are sanitized before being shelved, and staff members continually clean the store.

“We have had a good response since we have reopened,” Marden says. “I just love being part of Geek Street. Having a used book store here is perfect. People from all over the country travel here to visit the comic book shop, toy store and record store. Although there is a place for technology and it’s here to stay, people love the tactile feel of books. There is something in all of us that longs for the simple comfort of being able to turn the pages of a book.”

JEFF STOUT In Loving Memory When Jeff and I sat down to talk about the purchase of Cone Palace.... he said: “Tam Tam, it’s already established. All we need to do is build the rapport with staff and treat them like family and get to know our customers on a first name basis.” He then used the analogy..... it’s like the Cheers theme song. Sometimes you want to go where everyone knows your name and they’re always glad you came. Stouty told me that is how he has grown the family funeral business to what is today. Building personal relationships and genuinely caring about all the people you come in contact with. Jeff always used the saying.... treat others how you would want to be treated. With the Bible verse, “Do unto others as you would have others to do unto you”. Jeff had a heart of gold and a passion for working. But most importantly, giving back to the staff, customers, and the community to pay it forward was what made him successful.

Thank you for honoring my husband that has proved what success really is! A heart that is dedicated, and not just out for personal financial growth! I am sure Jeff has found a way to work in heaven. I grew up here and graduated from Northwestern High School. Starting North Central Outdoor Power was just an off the wind thing. I decided on it one Saturday. I work alongside my wife Dee Dee. We have been married 32 years and she has been the rock in the business since it started. When I have some free time, I enjoy going to tractor pulls. But that doesn’t happen too often.

We are much too busy for that!

I’ve been working in Kokomo since 1990. I’m fellowship-trained in sports medicine but these days I’m also doing a lot of knee replacements. So, I’ve had four generations of the same family as patients. I’ve always been a sports fanatic! I really enjoyed donating my services as team physician for Kokomo High School. I got to travel with the football team and both boys’ and girls’ basketball. I did it for 18 years and loved it.

I got my associate’s degree in PC Support from Kokomo Ivy Tech. What I like best is satisfying customers’ needs. I do a lot of virus removal and cleanups, but I also set up both home and business computer systems. What has been great lately, is that I can fix customer’s computers remotely. In my free time, I like to bowl and my wife Katie and I love to visit my in-laws at their RV site.

I lucked into this job. It is my third adult job and I found something I really enjoy.

Bicycling has been part of our culture since the 1800s. It’s a great way to get outside, but some people rely on bikes for transportation. Over the years I’ve been very active in the local bike club.

I also belong to the Home Brew Club and am involved in Ales for Tails, a fundraiser that benefits the Humane Society.

We came here 18 years ago from Denver.

Kokomo is an amazing place and we love it here. We have traveled a lot and seen a lot of different cultures and types of art. Our shop became a cumulation of our loves. We donate time to Kokomo Rescue Mission to help people get back on their feet. Music is a huge love of ours, so we are involved in Rhum Academy of Music.

McCool’s Flooring has been in business for 53 years. When I was growing up, we had a little store behind our house.

When a customer came, my mom would go outside and greet them. I loved seeing that interaction. Now, years later, I love flooring but it’s the people we serve that makes it enjoyable. I feel that faith and commitment to community go hand in hand, so I’ve served on the board of our church other groups.

I bought the business in 2007. I never wanted to be the biggest, but the best at serving others with great quality products. I surround myself with a great staff and we enjoy bringing people’s dreams about a kitchen or deck to a reality. My grandfather was the best teacher I ever had. I could run anything past him. I’m a big believer in giving back and I’ve been involved with organizations such as Rotary, Red Cross and Salvation Army.

I decided to become a dentist after I shadowed my sister, who is a dental assistant in Shelbyville. When I can fix a problem and see patients walk out the door in such a better state, it’s wonderful. My wife Marsi and I have five children and are licensed foster parents.

We have a hobby farm where we raise goats that the kids show in 4-H. The COVID pandemic has been a setback but I feel those that fight against fear, come out ahead.

I graduated from Eastern High School and worked at McGonigal’s for many years. I became involved in Ace Automotive when a mechanic approached me to partner with him.

I took over the company in 2006. I treat other people the way I want to be treated, so I was proud we were named in the 2019 Best of Kokomo for our breaks and service. When I’m not working, I enjoy barbecuing with my family and going to races.

I graduated from Kokomo High School and went on to Kokomo Ivy Tech.

Currently I’m finishing up a second degree in Cypher Security which I should be done with in December. My hope is to expand the business by offering some IT consultation for our customers. My wife Kasey and I enjoy spending time with our kids at home as well as going on family vacations. I don’t want to take anything for granted because tomorrow is not guaranteed.

I’ve been involved with comic books since second grade. My parents considered my reading to be poor so my dad bought me comic books. I couldn’t wait to see my tutor so I could read the words in the comic books. Comics Cubed will have its 10th anniversary this September but we have developed a community on Facebook as well. We have live shows that are interactive. We treat customers like extended family.

We know names and what they are interested in.

My grandfather started Caldwell Monument in 1947, but I never planned on working in the business. I ended up falling in love with it and have traveled all over the country to earn certifications and learn from others. However, I won’t force my family to be in the business because I wasn’t forced! I enjoy being a mentor through Preserve Marriage Ministry. Family and church are very important to me.

Jason Van Haecke, owner of The Kingdom: Cards & Games in Kokomo, is thrilled to be celebrating the store’s third anniversary.

“Three years is quite an accomplishment and I couldn’t be happier,” he says. “I’m really excited about it.”

The Kingdom: Cards & Games originally opened in 2017 at a different location, eventually relocating to West Walnut Street.

The business has gained devoted customers who enthusiastically continue to shop at the store.

“Our mission statement is that The Kingdom: Cards & Games strives to be Kokomo’s preferred destination for competitive and casual gaming, providing a positive and engaging environment,” Van Haecke says.

“I have been in gaming since I was a teen, having been to Gen Con for many years, as well as many other gaming conventions,” he says.

Van Haecke enjoys being located amidst several shops that offer toys, comics, vinyl records and more - a shopping area collectively known as Kokomo’s Geek Street - and he says the business owners on the street are very helpful to each other.

“It’s awesome to be part of something that’s bigger than just my own small business,” he says. “The support and knowledge we gain from each other strengthens us all individually, and as a group.”

Van Haecke says the coronavirus pandemic has motivated many individuals and families to spend time playing the kinds of games he offers.

“For most families, work or school was replaced with spending time with family, and that was spent playing games,” he says.

Van Haecke says Kingdom’s steady stream of business throughout the past few months is proof that many people stuck at home and tired of watching television have enjoyed turning to gaming. Van Haecke says he and his business have done well during the pandemic.

“I’ve actually been great,” he says.

“Besides some really bad eating and sleeping habits, I’ve actually been in good health.”

Van Haecke has a few favorites of his own.

In the concrete realm, Cottingham can tackle just about any project.

Founded in 2014, Cottingham Concrete services a wide range of concrete needs including decorative and stained concrete, outdoor living areas and more. In addition to concrete work, the company can also handle projects like facility maintenance, snow removal, site cleanup and more making the business a one-stop shop for contracting needs.

“I can do anything with concrete,” Cottingham says. “On the decorative end, it’s open to anything.”

Originally from Kokomo, Owner Brad Cottingham is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to home maintenance.

Nevertheless, he ultimately considers himself a concrete guy.

“I’m just kind of a handyman all around, but concrete is my passion,” he says. “That’s where my heart is. I just love doing it.”

At the moment, Cottingham says he’s been busy with concrete overlays, which can have a range of benefits.

“For the customer, it saves on the charge for coming in and tearing up the yard - I don’t have to do that,” Cottingham says. “It also saves on the charge of hauling away all the existing concrete that I’ve busted out.”

When it comes to the locations he services, Cottingham says he tends to stay within a 60mile radius of his Galveston headquarters.

“I’ve been to Geist, Wabash, Marion and even two hours north, almost to Goshen,” he says. “It all depends on the job.”

Horton noted that it is still a familyoperated business.

Karen Horton with Horton’s Home & Garden, says the downtown Tipton business has been blessed since it opened in the late 70s.

“We love working with our two daughters, Katy and Holly Beth,” Horton says. “They are a huge part of our everyday operations, along with buying, designing and maintaining our online store, as well as our social media presence. It has taken years, and many changes, to build this now third generation Tipton business.”

“My husband Tim’s parents opened the store as Horton and Son’s Hardware in 1976,” Horton says. “Tim and I purchased the business from them in 1995. Over the years, we’ve evolved into more of a lifestyle boutique, meaning that we carry a wide variety of things for your home. We have also changed our name to reflect just that: Horton’s Home and Garden.”

Horton added that the business has also grown a lot over the years.

“We have quite a few businesses housed within the same storefront,” Horton says.

“We have Custom Blinds and Shutters, a Fudge Shoppe, garden center, home decor, ladies clothing and children’s gifts.

We also sell seasonal and everyday decor for the home and garden.”

Customer service is just one of their strengths.

“We help the customers bring beauty and utility to the inside of their homes, as well as outside,” Horton says. “It’s a place where they can design their wardrobe, home and life. We have many gift options and unique card lines. We put in many hours selecting just the perfect blend of products to create an inviting, unique and peaceful environment for our customers.”

Horton’s Home & Garden carries a mix of new products, vintage finds and handcrafted items.

“A sampling of some of our wares are 1803 Candles, Stonewall Kitchen, children’s clothing and gifts, women’s clothing, jewelry, handbags, books, bereavement gifts, cards, house plants and home décor,” Horton says. “Seasonally, in our garden center, we carry flowers, vegetable plants, mums, pumpkins, gourds, cornstalks, live Christmas trees, wreaths and greens.”

Horton’s Home & Garden garners a lot of customers.

“The majority of our everyday customers are from Tipton and its surrounding counties,” Horton says. “Our five events each year have helped us to accomplish a business goal of becoming a destination shop, and bringing customers from all over the state, and even out of state, to downtown Tipton.”

Horton noted that the five events include Spring Open House (March), French Market ( July 10 and 11), Autumn Market (Sept. 26), Christmas Open House (Nov. 6 and 7), and Mistletoe Market on Main (Dec.5) “We are looking forward, and working towards, our 12th annual French Market, Friday, July 10, from 9 a.m. five p.m., to 5 and Saturday, July 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” Horton says. “This muchanticipated event is our largest event.”

Horton says it’s a fun event for the whole family.

“Our parking lot is transformed into a French courtyard filled with vendors,” Horton says. “Our fudge shop becomes a patisserie, where homemade herb butter, french baguettes, chicken salad croissants, and lavender lemonade are served for lunch. You can enjoy French music, friends, beautiful vignettes, and an amazing variety of wares, offered both inside the store and outside by our

“We have truly been blessed over the years by our customers and community as we have grown our little corner in downtown Tipton,” Horton says. “Tipton has a beautiful downtown, many new shops, and continues to grow and thrive. We are proud to be a part of what we truly believe is ‘Tastefully Tipton.’”

Sarah Taylor and Tanya Cowan of Taylor & Cowan Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Tipton are honored to be able to serve their community. Both women feel a special calling to serve local families during the difficult time of losing a loved one. They are especially grateful to be part of the legacy left by Jeff Stout, a Kokomo businessman who touched the lives of many.

Stout, who passed away in February of this year, was a funeral home owner, a

coroner, a member of the city council, a fireman and a businessman. By all accounts, his life was filled with examples of helping others succeed in business.

The story of how Taylor & Cowan Funeral Home came to be is just one example.

Taylor and Cowan met each other after graduating from high school, when they both attended Wright beauty school in Kokomo. Their workstations were assigned next to each other and they became best friends. However, after they both got married and had children, they lost touch. It wasn’t until Cowan JULY 2020 / TIPTON MAGAZINE / 5

attended a visitation at a funeral home where Taylor was working, when they reconnected.

“I was so surprised to see Sarah working there,” Cowan says. “I had always felt a nudge to work in the funeral business but had never had the opportunity. We talked a long while and she told me someone had recently quit and they had an opening.”

Cowan took the job and progressed from being a greeter to a cleaner, and eventually took on any other task needed, including making trips to pick up

deceased individuals. Taylor encouraged her to attend the Mortuary Science program at Ivy Tech in Indianapolis. After both women completed state licensing requirements and passed a national board exam, they began dreaming of owning a funeral home.

“We had a friend who knew we were interested in opening up our own funeral business,” Cowan says. “He knew Jeff and told him about us. Jeff had an entrepreneurial mindset all the time, and any time he could help someone he felt was hard-working, he was all over that.

Jeff called us up and said, ‘I’ve heard about you guys, and I feel in my heart that something good can be done.’”

The women met with Stout and he shared his plan. He knew two funeral businesses were up for sale, but had to be purchased together. Stout’s plan was to buy both and gradually sell one to Taylor and Cowan.

“We were worried but Jeff told us, ‘You will have to work hard, but I will support you,’” Cowan says. “He took us under his wing and answered every question we had. We did everything he told us to. We are so proud to say that not one time did we ever miss a payment.”

Stout realized the impact that the death of a pet can have on a family. In 2011, he was instrumental in opening Paws @ Rest, a Howard County pet cremation service.

This influenced Taylor and Cowan to offer services for the loss of beloved animal companions.

“Sarah and I are both huge animal lovers,” Cowan says. “Pets add so much to life, and

they love like people can’t. We provide the services we would want for our own pets.”

Cowan says she and Taylor were fortunate to connect with Stout.

“Finding Jeff was a God thing,” she says. “He was very genuine. Someone like that usually never comes along in life.”
