e have been working for many months on an update to the City of Jeffersontown website.

The appearance is refreshed and more visually appealing. But the most important change is its user friendliness.

Jeffersontown Mayor Bill Dieruf A key goal in the website revamp was to create an improved resource for our residents. The revised site makes it faster and easier for residents to obtain information and get questions answered.

It’s also designed to be mobile friendly. In fact, a mobile app will be available, making it simpler to use the functions of the site on a cell phone. (The app can be downloaded at Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store.)

We are very pleased with the new functions of the website. We hope residents are as well.

It’s amazing how the technological upgrades of the revamped website can help residents and city officials communicate more effectively and work together to improve our community.

SUMMERFEST FEATURES FAMILY FUN AND CELEBRATION OF JEFFERSONTOWN’S 225TH ANNIVERSARY ON FRIDAY, JUNE 24 SummerFest 2022 will be held on Friday, June 24, at Veterans Memorial Park, 10707 Taylorsville Road, from 6 to 10 p.m. Admission is free.

‘JEFFERSONTOWN IN YOUR EYES’ PHOTO CONTEST GIVES RESIDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW WHAT THE CITY MEANS TO THEM In conjunction with the launch of its revamped website, the City of Jeffersontown is having a photo contest.

With the “Jeffersontown In Your Eyes” photo contest, residents are encouraged to submit photos that paint a visual portrait of how they see their city.

Contest categories are: people, places, activities (events), and what Jeffersontown means to you.

One submission per person per category will be allowed. More rules and details will be available on the photo contest page on the website on June 1.

Photos can be submitted from June 1 to July 6.

One of a Kind JILL WRIGHT IS LIVING HER BEST LIFE

Down syndrome occurs when the body produces an extra copy of chromosome 21.

The CDC estimates that about 6,000 babies in the United States are born with Down syndrome each year. Jill’s mother Julie found out about Jill’s diagnosis when she was 20 weeks pregnant.

“I did a blood test and it came back as likely positive likely for Down syndrome,” Julie says. “I was shocked at the news. At that point in my life I didn’t have much of an understanding of Down syndrome.

I called my husband Dan and we met at home. There were some tears because of the Writer / Renee Larr unknown. “We didn’t care about the delays she might have in the future,” Julie says. “We were focused on doing everything we could to help her survive. As the months went by, Jill and I had many tests done. They couldn’t hear her heartbeat on many occasions, so we would get an ultrasound almost every week.

The great part about all that craziness was I got pictures of her.”

The couple spent time meeting with doctors and researching Down syndrome. They wanted to provide Jill with the best tools possible after birth. She was born three weeks early on October 8, weighing in at 8 pounds, 2 ounces. Jill’s birth weight was higher than other babies with Down syndrome, which helped Jill’s survival.

At six weeks old, Jill developed a fever and was admitted to the hospital. She was

sent home a week later only to suffer from congestive heart failure. The terrifying incident landed the Wright family back at the hospital. Jill’s doctor performed a heart catheterization, taking photos of the inside of her heart. This helped doctors develop a plan to repair her heart. Jill underwent open-heart surgery the following day, which lasted more than six hours.

Jill has performed the national anthem in ASL at various military and charity events, performed songs in ASL for a Linkin’ Bridge concert at the Brown Theatre, and for J.D. Shelburne benefitting Angels In Disguise.

She even teaches ASL to 3- and 4-year-olds at Down Syndrome of Louisville.

In 2019 Jill started working part time as the assistant to the theater department director at Mercy Academy. She auditioned for a role in the school’s production of “Godspell” and made quite the impression on Amanda Simmons, director of theater. She was cast in “Godspell” and later “Peter Pan.” Simmons loves Jill’s willingness to advocate for herself and take a chance on something new.

Jill spent much of her childhood dealing with different medical diagnoses while leading a reasonably normal life. She started therapy at Down Syndrome of Louisville at 19 days old, and group activities at 18 months old. Her family took her to and from therapy and doctor’s appointments for years. All the time spent shuttling Jill around led to a happy, healthy and thriving teenager. “One thing I love about Jill is her positivity,” Simmons says. “When she first started, she would talk to my students about what it “I started teaching Jill the basics of means to have Down syndrome and how American Sign Language when she was she wanted to be treated. The outgoing young adult loves to volunteer for local organizations like Down Syndrome of Louisville, Angels In Disguise, and Butterfly Backpacks, which provides necessities and encouraging notes to women at The Healing Place.

“I just love helping other people,” Jill says.

“It’s important to me to help anyone that needs it, and I have fun when I help them.”

Her parents describe her as a very caring person who is always going out of her way for other people. It’s important to them that

she cares so much for others. Her father Dan knows many people don’t interact much with those with Down syndrome.

They want people to see that the diagnosis of Down syndrome doesn’t make Jill or anyone else with the disease any different than anyone else.

“We don’t call them disabilities,” Julie says.

“We call them capabilities. People with Down syndrome are capable of having full lives. They have jobs, relationships, and are active in their communities just like anyone else.”

Jill has modeled for many print advertisements and brochures. She’s played softball, basketball, cheerleading and golf in the Special Olympics with Dan as her proud softball coach. Her involvement in these various endeavors led to Jill being chosen as the Down Syndrome of Louisville 2020 Citizen of the Year.

“That was exciting for me,” Jill says. “It was

an honor to be selected.”

She’s even met former President Jimmy Carter twice. The first time was at Sam’s Club at a book signing. The second was at his 90th birthday celebration in Plains, Georgia.

Jill has lofty goals for her future. She will participate in the College Connections program at Bellarmine University in the fall. The new program was designed in conjunction with Down Syndrome of Louisville. Jill was quickly selected as one of two students to participate.

“Jill and another student will be coming to campus twice a week to take up to two classes on campus per semester,” says Abigail Walsh, interim director for continuing education. “In addition, they will participate in social and community building activities while they’re here as well. It’s designed to give them the college experience.”

Jill is currently deciding what she’d like to study, and is interested in many areas of education.

“I want to take classes in communication so I can keep presenting,” Jill says. “I’m interested in photography, technology, theater and maybe graphic design.”

Jill and her family are incredibly appreciative of Down Syndrome of Louisville for their innovative programming, advocacy and support.

“We’re just so thankful to them for all the help throughout the years,” Julie says.

“We’re so lucky to have such a wonderful resource so close to home for Jill because many other families don’t have something similar in their area.”

Piper Madison has had her heart set on becoming a pop star for most of her 19 years. It’s no pie-in-the-sky dream, as the singer has a couple of self-produced albums to her credit and a large social media following, and was also voted by LEO Weekly readers as the Best Band/Musician Performing Original Music.

While her career could be considered a full family enterprise, Madison thinks of herself as a do-it-yourself artist. The family includes her Louisville-based parents, Patrick and Rhonda Keesee, and younger sister Skylar.

She produces her own music and performs as a solo artist, having mastered the use of a device called a looper that allows her to add the sounds of instruments while performing live.

“I think of myself as a DIY indie artist,” she said. “I’m a musician but also an entrepreneur, and I’ve got a lot of other things I’m trying to incorporate.”

Madison’s start in show business began at an early age, and she was so promising as an actress and performer that the family decided to move to Los Angeles when she was just 9 years old. They came back to Louisville during the summers, but she and Skylar think of L.A. as the place they spent those formative years.

Both girls had success landing gigs for modeling and acting. Madison’s big break came at age 13 when she landed the part of Zelphaba in the Nickelodeon series “100 Things to Do Before High School.”

She released her debut album, “Who’s Running Your Mind,” in 2019 at the age of 16. Her single from that record, “Little Bit 14 / JUNE 2022 / TownePost.com

of Rain,” reached number 14 on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs weekly list.

Her second album, “How Do I Love?,” was released last fall, coinciding with her family’s move back to Louisville - a direct result of the pandemic. She said her music was a great way to keep her creativity going in those L.A. years, especially between acting gigs.

“I actually started writing and picking up music in between auditions because the acting was kind of crazy, up and down and unpredictable, so in down times I picked up music,” she says.

She soon found that music was the creative outlet she wanted to pursue. With the release of “How Do I Love?,” she started getting airplay on local station WFPK, received the LEO Weekly Award, and had some gigs at local outlets including the Blind Squirrel. Her family invested in

marketing, including billboards, to boost her numbers on sites like Spotify. An album release party in October was held at Black Rabbit in St. Matthews.

Madison seems to have a rare gift for business as well. Unlike other rising stars, she does her own social media, posting on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and other social media, while making sure her music is available on sites like Spotify and Amazon Music.

“I’m a musician but also an entrepreneur,” she says. “I find the best way to do something is to just start, and consider every failure as a learning experience that was necessary.”

The hard work is already paying off. Her music found more than 90,000 listeners on Spotify alone in the last year, prompting her to post the numbers on Instagram along with this inspirational post: “When I made this post last year, I couldn’t have imagined it could possibly get any better. I don’t do this for the numbers - I do it for the positive impact and the true, authentic connections built. Even so, seeing this growth is comforting. It’s a reflection of all the work I’ve done, inside and out.

I’m extremely grateful for the progress I’ve made this year, and all the people in my life who helped make that happen.

to take over some space previously used as an attic to create a photo studio. Then she immediately posted several creative photographs.

While Madison says her main goal is to eventually become a touring act and play on the road, she’s still 19 and hasn’t yet gotten a college degree. There’s an offer to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, but she says her future is more likely to include undergraduate studies at Centre College in Danville, quite a bit closer to home and her family.

When describing her second album last fall, she said something about it that still rings true, even as she’s working on her next music project: “This is kind of a continuation of my mental, emotional and spiritual journey that I started with that first album.”

It will be interesting to see where Madison’s journey takes her.

Rather than producing live theater, which was not an option for a period of time, they figured out a way to beam themselves into classrooms from home.

StageOne Family Theatre, Louisville’s premier children’s theater, has been entertaining young audiences for 75 years.

Through the last few years, there has been a lot of change within StageOne. With pandemic-related shutdowns, StageOne leaders, like everyone else, had to determine next steps. Andrew Harris, producing artistic director for StageOne, was

“The pandemic forced us to shift from putting on strong, professional work for young audiences here, locally, to having this magical opportunity to put our theater in a digital context and look at the tools we have to reach our audiences in new and different ways,” Chambers says.

StageOne typically puts on four main stage productions each year at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. This year

they featured “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t Fly” and “Dragons Love Tacos.” “Don’t Tell Me I Can’t Fly” was about to open when COVID-19 cases spiked, so they filmed it and worked with the local school corporation to get the production into every Jefferson County Public Schools elementary classroom for students to see. They also built educational materials around it, because one of StageOne’s main focuses is on educating young people, from elementary through high school. For younger grades, that might include a team coming out to perform a book for students, whereas for high schools it may involve a teacher calling Chambers and requesting a service based on the school’s budget.

They also partner with the library system to perform stories at libraries throughout the city.

“It’s mostly about the actors reading and acting out what’s happening within the book, and then finding places where the young people in the audience can build the environment around it,” Chambers says.

“For instance, if they’re reading ‘Where the Wild Things Are,’ the performers would invite the audience to show their terrible teeth to create the forest of trees. It’s a more exciting way to read stories.”

They intersperse big shows with smaller, community-engaged performances and interactions.

“We’re always trying to stick our fingers into whatever pies we are able to,” Chambers says. “What’s great is that there are so many art makers and opportunities

throughout the city. We are always in each other’s inboxes asking, ‘Are you doing this thing?’ It’s very collaborative.”

Before Chambers joined the staff at StageOne, she worked for a regional theater in Chicago that catered to adults.

She got frustrated in that space because she had come from a community and a master’s program engaged with making art specifically for young audiences.

“I didn’t know how much I’d miss that space,” Chambers says. “Being back in a [theater for young adults] space has been so exciting.”

She notes that when they look out at the audience of young people for a main stage play, they are not only seeing people who want to tell stories up on stage, but also the spectrum of young people who are going to tell stories in a variety of ways.

“My goal was to, on the fourth day, get the students to stand up and perform in front of the whole group to share a one-minute story of what home was to them,” Chambers says. “There’s always a moment in rehearsals in an educational setting where you give the instructions and think, ‘This is about to fail,’ but every single person spoke.”

The new Trager Family Jewish Community Center ( JCC) is opening this spring. The $43 million facility is located behind the current facility on Dutchmans Lane. It includes a year-round indoor aquatics facility, a modern, 37,000-square-foot fitness space offering 75-plus weekly group fitness classes, 50-plus cardio machines, a new performance room, a learning center for preschool children, and a multipurpose auditorium space that will serve as the new home of CenterStage.

The Trager family members have been longtime supporters of the Jewish community in Louisville and the new facility.

The Trager family doubled their initial pledge of $1.5 million to $3 million, earmarked for construction of the new building.

The new facility was designed to embody the Jewish community’s values. It was designed with purposeful spaces that reflect Jewish culture and welcome every person regardless of faith. The JCC partnered with architectural firm GBBN to create the new building.

Kwasny, JCC fitness director. She calls the main lobby the heart of the building. The ceiling features a large display of hexagons that create the Star of David. The heart then opens to the body, the state-of-the-art fitness center as well as indoor and outdoor aquatics. The Early Learning Center nourishes the minds of young children.

The project was under construction for 18 months. On March 10, Governor Andy Beshear attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony to dedicate the new building.

“The ribbon cutting was wonderful,” Kwasny says. “Having the governor there

signified how important this project is to the whole community. We want to serve the Jewish community and the general public alike. We wanted to make sure this was a place where everyone felt welcome.”

The fitness center is more than just a place for members to work out, Kwasny says. “We want to be a multifaceted center,” she says.

“We want to provide fitness opportunities, aquatics opportunities, arts programming and preschool. We want to be a one-stop shop for families.”

The fitness center includes a dedicated performance room with TRX straps, squat racks, barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls and more. The center is equipped with new Peloton bikes, 45’ of indoor turf for strength training and conditioning, and an elevated indoor track.

In-house services include personal training, massage services, physical therapy and nutrition coaching.

“We have had a home at the old building for over 20 years, and our program is over 100 years old,” says Erin Jump, educational program coordinator. “The space is state of the art, with integrated sound. We’re using a lot of our old equipment and getting new drapery and lighting, which makes it feel like a whole new space. We can’t wait to make art together in the new area.”

J Arts & Ideas Acting Out is a professional touring children’s theater troupe that travels to Kentuckiana schools and community centers to present educational and relevant musical theater to students of all grade levels. The program will utilize the auditorium for production, planning, preparation and rehearsal.

The Shapiro Auditorium is home to one of Louisville’s most renowned theater programs, CenterStage. CenterStage delivers J Arts & Ideas Academy is a youth musical quality community theater and spectacular musicals. The theater allows local performers, theater training program that allows students to discover and develop their talents as designers and musicians to practice their

performers. Each child will work with theater professionals in three disciplines including acting, singing and dancing.

“Our Academy kids and their families are extremely active in the behind-the-scenes aspects of our experience,” Jump says.

“We’ve been in the process of moving things over to the new space and checking it out. We’ll have our first show in the new auditorium in May. The kids are so excited to get in there.”

Jump says the CenterStage board has worked tirelessly to plan the space out so they can showcase the programming. She says they poured over concerns with tech elements, lighting and sound, and audience experience, to ensure the best use of the space.

The JCC’s Active Adults programming provides year-round nutrition, fitness, recreation, education and cultural activities that promote health, social connection and independent living for active and senior adults.

RUNNER JOE BURKETT FINISHES 2ND IN BOSTON MARATHON’S VISUAL IMPAIRMENT DIVISION just to get to Boston. After landing, his fortunes seemingly turned for the better, as the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired staff arranged for someone to meet Burket at the airport and transport him to his hotel, while his family was able to find another flight into Boston the following day.

Joe Burket wasn’t sure if he would make it to Boston.

After qualifying in the visual impairment division for the Boston Marathon at the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes National Championships, Burket was set to make his debut at the world’s oldest marathon in October of 2021. After a series of events impacted both his travel and running plans, doubt began to seep into Burket’s mind regarding whether he would actually run the race.

After arriving, Burket got another piece of bad news. One of the two guides set to help Burket navigate the 26.2-mile course had broken his toe and would be unable to run.

Thankfully, his remaining guide found a willing replacement in the area, and Burket could finally focus on the race.

Originally planning to take a Southwest flight with his wife and two children, Burket and his family were sitting at the gate when their flight was one of many canceled by the airline. That left Burket scrambling to find a replacement. He did, but only for himself, forcing him to fly solo with a long layover

Burket finished the marathon in a time of 3:18:23 and placed second in the men’s vision impairment division, earning $750 for his performance. He said the time wasn’t what he had hoped, but was proud of the way he finished the race.

“I was hoping to break 3:15, but I had the travel issues and I wasn’t eating great,” Burket says. “I got to about mile 15 and had the feeling this isn’t my day. The last five miles turned into survival mode towards the finish. I knew I was in second place at that point in the blind division so I just changed my strategy, stayed calm and held it together. It wasn’t my best race, but it was Boston. It’s not supposed to be an easy race.”

This was the first Boston Marathon with a visual impairment division with prize money, making the event even more special for Burket. With the new division, Burket and his fellow competitors were sent out onto the course earlier than the rest of the field, giving him a unique feeling of running the race without the typical crowd of runners.

“It was wonderful,” Burket says. “They treat us kind of like the VIP runners. We had our names on the bibs like the professionals.

Any other runs I need to do, I’ve been in St. Mathews for close to 20 years and I have that map in my head of where I want to go.”

Burket, 39, hasn’t always been blind. He was diagnosed with a rare condition known as Leber hereditary optic neuropathy in 2012 that caused him to begin losing his sight. It wasn’t long after discovering the condition that he was legally blind.

Locally, Burket enjoys running the track at Waggener High School, Norbourne Estates, Macon Avenue and Seneca Park. When he is in marathon training he runs five to six days per week and 45 to 55 miles, receiving help from the community along the way.

A 2000 graduate of Trinity High School and a member of the cross-country team, Burket had been what he calls a “fair-weathered” runner when he was younger. He started getting more serious about the sport once he lost his vision, and says he is a better runner now than when he was sighted. His longtime familiarity with St. Mathews is a big advantage as he trains throughout the community.

“It’s just trying to work that in, between work and family,” Burket says of his training.

“It’s another part-time job. I have a wife that is understanding, grandparents that are willing to help out and I have the luxury of nice neighbors. My parents are close to St. Mathews and my dad will drive me to Seneca Park so I can meet up with others to run. It’s an individual sport but it’s a full team of people that got me to Boston.”

find a comfortable straight shot where I can run ahead, turn around and run back to them, and they’ll help me put together a run where I need guides and where I’m comfortable running by myself.”

When he isn’t running, Burket works for the Department of Veterans Affairs assisting with disability compensation. A college baseball player at Bellarmine University, Burket has tried other sports geared towards the visually impaired such as goalball and beep baseball, but enjoys running the most.

“Running is such an individual sport,” Burket says. “If I can find the time and someone to help me, I can just pick up and go. I just need a pair of running shoes and a clear road to run on. I can do it whenever, wherever. It’s something I feel really comfortable doing. When I’m running with other people it clears my mind and it’s a nice moment of freedom. It’s one of the freest moments of my life of just not worrying.”

Burket has a few races planned in the near future. He has committed to the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes National Championships in 2022. Burket will also compete in the Urban Bourbon Half Marathon in 2022, the site of his first half marathon in 2012, with Boston in 2022 on his radar as well.

“I keep finding a new goal - just challenging myself to be better,” he says. “I have reached new levels I didn’t think I’d hit, just a little bit at a time.”

Burket says doesn’t want to be defined by his disability.

“It’s really cool being the second-fastest blind runner at the Boston Marathon but I still compare myself to other runners,” Burket says. “I don’t want to just beat other blind people, I want to beat everyone. I don’t want to be known as the blind runner. I want to be the runner who happens to be blind.”
