Murphy Beds: A Space-Saving Sleeping Solution by Christy Heitger-Ewing

Tailored Living, a top professional organizing company, designs various storage solutions so that customers can make the most out of their living space. This might include custom closets, pantries, laundry rooms, garages, or home offices. One area that has really become popular recently is the renewed interest in Murphy Beds (also called wall, hideaway, or pull-down beds). Popular in the 1950s, they briefly lost their luster only to make a resurgence now that so many people work from home. Though homeowners want a combined work and sleeping area, they don’t want to sacrifice floor space. “Homeowners want a place to work but would prefer not to have a bulky bed taking up 75 percent of the room,” says Jon Elliott, owner of Tailored Living. “The Murphy Bed offers the perfect solution. When closed, the cabinet – just 16 inches deep – doesn’t protrude out into the room.” Foldaway beds can be installed in a variety of rooms, including craft, play, family, workout, and media rooms. This enables a space to be used in any capacity but still transform, in a matter of minutes, into a sleeping sanctuary. Tailored Living can design built-in custom cabinets in order to not only seamlessly blend the Murphy Bed into a space but also to provide additional storage in the way of bookshelves and more. “We can incorporate work areas and desks, shelving, a media center, or a variety of custom storage solutions that tie in with the Murphy Bed so that it’s disguised even more,” says Elliott, noting that cabinets come in a variety of design styles and finishes to match any décor. Gone are the days of hard, lumpy sleeper sofas that leave you

with a sore back or kinked up neck in the morning. Murphy Beds are comfortable because they use a solid platform just like a platform bed. Homeowners can then select a standard mattress that suits their needs, including twin, full, queen, or king, and coil-spring mattress up to 12” thick fit inside the wall. A side-tilt style is an additional option to the standard vertical orientation. For more information, visit or give them a call at 317-842-4272. THE MURPHY BED offers the perfect solution to space problems. When closed, the cabinet – just 16 inches deep – doesn’t protrude out into the room.

ILLUMINATE YOUR HOME Beyond illumination, lighting can instantly change the look and style of a room from traditional to contemporary and everything in between. A good choice is fixtures that incorporate LED, as they are energy efficient, occupy minimal space and allow for a variety of designs while still providing an exceptional quality of light. When developing a lighting plan for your home, the lighting experts at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery recommend using the “TADA” method. It stands for: Task, Accent, Decorative and Ambient lighting. By considering all four of these layers of light, you can achieve the proper illumination in any space. • Task LED – Whether you are writing,

reading or cooking, task LED lighting can add concentrated lighting and style to any room. Table lamps can provide great task lighting for a living room and home office. If you want a bright bathroom, task lighting is key. You’ll want to light the vanity area with a fixture above the mirror or with sconces on either side. When thinking of your kitchen, consider undercabinet lighting, where most of the work takes place.

• Accent LED – Pendant LED fixtures

are great in rooms with high ceilings to add light and visual interest. Ideal over islands and dining areas, pendants offer a decorative accent and soft illumination.

• Decorative LED – Advancements in

this eco-friendly technology creates light in innovative forms that not only mask the LED bulb but also affords for more decorative and stylistic lighting designs. Consider placing these fixtures in the living room to emphasize artwork, sculptures or a large plant.

• Ambient LED – Set the tone of the

room and provide general illumination with ambient LED lighting, which can be

found in ceiling fixtures like recessed lighting and chandeliers. Positioning recessed lighting around the perimeter or a chandelier in the center of a room can help the room look bigger and provides an overall comfortable level of light. THREE TRENDS TO CONSIDER

When selecting options for your next light fixture, consider these three lighting trends. • Respect the Bulb – The choice between tubular or traditional A-shape bulbs will completely transform the look of the fixture. LED options provide additional brightness and performance with a fraction of the heat output and energy cost.

• Adjustable Fixtures – With a simple

twist or turn, adjustable fixtures can adapt to your space and personal style preferences. The flexibility of these interactive pieces provides greater options when selecting home decor.

Many organizations tout a corporate ladder, positions employees can “create” for themselves and virtually unlimited opportunity within their structure. But they don’t provide a roadmap to the ladder or a path to success for team members who aren’t sure where they want to go (but know they don’t want to stay where they are forever). Custom Concrete is a destination employer, a place where people would want to work because they see and hear what it’s like to be on our team and witness the potential for real professional growth. To do that, our first task was to develop a destination workforce. Our guiding focus has been (and always will be) to provide our customers with the high-quality products and services they require and deserve. To do this, we understand the importance of valuing, respecting and

developing the talents of each employee while creating a team structure focused on meeting and exceeding the needs of every customer. We’re big believers in building something to the very best of our ability, whether it’s a new project our team is working on in the field or the career path for one of our valued team members. You may have read how Custom Concrete defines success or how we’re working to build a stronger community around us. But what you may not know is how we are encouraging our employees to be the best versions of themselves every day they come to work. Custom Concrete recently partnered with some folks who know more about professional development than we do to help grow our team members into the best versions of themselves. We’re excited to work with

innovative groups like Indianapolis-based Lessonly, a training software company that helps customer service and sales teams do better work, to help train our employees internally and prepare them for success. In addition, we’re always on the lookout for other training and professional development opportunities available with our partners that could benefit our team. Because we know an engaged, empowered and educated workforce means better results — for everyone, especially our customers! President’s Message New homes are built to be significantly more energy efficient today than the homes of the past. But what does that mean for you as a homeowner? The benefits of having an energy efficient new home are often overlooked or misunderstood when making a home investment decision. Acknowledging the HERS Index score of the home is a reliable way to gauge where it falls on the efficiency spectrum, which allows you to then estimate the benefits and impacts as a result of its efficiency. These energy efficient new homes are actually designed to reduce your energy bills, lower maintenance costs, increase the value of your home and even help you qualify for some tax rebates and incentives. A lot of times it is hard to see beyond the sticker price of a home; but when you factor in these monthly utility and maintenance savings that come with buying a new home, you really can afford a new home that is about $20,000 more than an older existing home on the market today just based off the home’s energy efficiency! Not to mention the added benefits of reducing your carbon footprint and helping to create a healthier, safer and more comfortable living space for you and your family. BAGI members strive to provide top notch products and services to their customers, and we believe these benefits and values are emphasized through today’s efforts towards producing energy efficient new homes. Scott Thompson 2018 BAGI Board President

WOOD FLOORS Wood flooring, because of its nature as a wood product, may expand, contract, cup, and warp due to moisture and temperature variations of the home. The homeowner is responsible for maintaining proper humidity levels in the home. Even with proper humidity levels, changes may still appear as a result of heating and cooling systems. Why Build? New Homes are Energy Efficient!

Green practices in home building, remodeling, and land development have marked a shift in the way we live today. According to the National Association of Home Builders, an Energy Efficient Home is a home that uses less energy than a traditional home without compromising service to its occupants. These energy efficient new homes are designed to reduce energy bills, lower maintenance costs, increase the value of your home, reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions, conserve energy and water, be healthier and safer, qualify for tax rebates and incentives and create a comfortable living space for you and your family. Those are some serious perks!

WHAT MAKES THESE NEW HOMES ENERGY EFFICIENT? Quality work and good materials have always been hallmarks of a well-built home, but an understanding of how a house operates as a system is essential in building an energy efficient home. For new homes, builders now have at their disposal a vast array of materials, components, appliances and techniques to achieve optimal efficiency. Newly built homes are significantly more energy efficient today thanks to:

LED lighting

Insulation plays a vital role in the whole house system as well as the preservation of a home’s longevity. Although existing homes can be “weatherized” and retrofitted to become more efficient, it often takes in-depth measures and can be somewhat costly. You can always change countertops and flooring, but there is no substitute for properly insulating a home the first time. The money saved from efficient insulation can actually pay for those new countertops or floors later on down the road, not to mention reducing the workload on your HVAC system.

Compact fluorescent bulbs can save up to 75 percent of the energy used for lighting compared to traditional incandescent bulbs.

Multi-pane Windows Heat gain and heat loss through windows are responsible for 25 to 30 percent of residential heating and cooling energy use, so it’s important to choose the most efficient windows you can afford that work best in your climate.

Roofing Today’s roofing utilizes materials to better reflect heat and light away instead of absorbing it.

1 6 H AV E N

Heating and Air Heating and air account for nearly 56 percent of a household’s utility budget, but you can reduce this by investing in an energy efficient HVAC, as well as properly sealing ductwork to minimize air leakage.

Conserving Water Most toilets and faucets installed in new homes are certified to meet WaterSense criteria for water efficiency and performance.

WHAT’S THE HERS INDEX? The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index is the industry standard by which a home’s energy efficiency is measured. It can tell you so much about the home you live in, like how efficiently it’s operating and where you can make modifications for greater energy savings. When you’re selling your home, a low HERS Index Score can command a higher resale price. And when you’re buying a home, you can anticipate the costs of energy bills and efficiency upgrades. The U.S. Department of Energy has determined that a typical resale home scores 130 on the HERS Index while a standard new home is awarded a rating of 100. BAGI Builders tend to fall in the 60-75 range on this spectrum.

The Hers Index measures home energy efficiency. The lower the number, the more enery efficient your home is. Used Home

Standard New Home

BAGI New Homes

That means…  A home with a HERS Index Score of 70 is 30 percent more energy efficient than a standard new home  A home with a HERS Index Score of 130 is 30 percent less energy efficient than a standard new home

Governments have been updating outdated codes to reflect the demands and changes for more sustainable development. These changes have been driven by both regulation and an enhanced public focus on energy efficiency, due to rising energy costs and an enhanced awareness of our daily environmental impact. Prior to the Indiana Energy Code taking effect in 2012, home energy standards weren’t being enforced or monitored. Builders have since dramatically changed their building process to not only comply with the code but to also ensure that they are truly providing the efficiency proclaimed to their customers. With these standards in place, builders submit a set of prints and design specifications for the new home to a third party evaluator who analyzes for energy efficiency before the home is even built. Inspections take place throughout the construction process to make sure all aspects of the new home continue to align with these high standards. Final reports from the third party energy inspection company then provide builders with a HERS rating score for each new home built.

Energy costs, on average, are

26.1% lower for Indiana homes built after 2012.

newly built homes save on average

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN FOR YOU? SAVINGS! New Home Source estimates that newly built homes save 3,449 kWh a year on average. That’s enough to power your washer for four years, your TV for 11 years, or your coffee maker for 32 years! New homes offer a lower net cost of ownership. While many home buyers focus on price and payments, factoring in your home’s energy consumption costs could save tens of thousands of dollars over years of ownership. 1

The gain in energy efficiency in a new home translates to real savings on utility bills. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a resale home with a HERS 130 rating will cost approximately $200,000 in utilities over the course of a 30-year mortgage. Utilities for a new home that scores 65 would cost approximately half, saving $100,000 in operating costs over 30 years! Or look at it this way: If a new home receives a HERS score of 62, it is 38 percent more efficient than the typical new home, by RESNET’s standards. That’s approximately $1,428 in savings each year, based on local energy prices on a typical 3,000ft² home, which breaks down to $119 in utility savings alone per month. The question then really is what would YOU do with an additional $119 per month? Over the span of your home payments, this could add up to that finished basement you’ve always wanted – all while netting approximately the same monthly costs if you factor in these savings on utilities.

It also lowers maintenance costs. When everything in the home is new, you don’t have to inherit a previous homeowner’s issues. Don’t forget to also factor in the remaining useful life of all major components and appliances.

Insurance rates on new homes are much less compared to existing homes since source-of-risk components like the roof, electric, siding, brick, plumbing, HVAC, and sump pump are all brand new.

Vendor Customer Service

Pro •Tips While builders often serve in the client-facing role, many rely on their vendors to assist with their client needs in various capacities, and vendors often need to work with one another during the building process to ensure a timely completion of the home. Builders want to ensure that vendors and subcontractors are aware of how their actions impact the process and how important customer service – in all aspects – truly is. Want to check in to make sure you are on par with builder expectations? Here are a few pro-tips!

COMMUNICATION IS KEY (and delivery is just as important as the message!) – Whether you are working directly with a client or with another vendor, be sure to keep the lines of communication open. Communicating in a professional and timely manner helps head off a lot of unnecessary problems. BE FLEXIBLE – With the many variables that go into the homebuilding process, it’s understandable that things often change. From weather to change orders to delays from utility installations, your builders and developers face many challenges that are often beyond their control. Knowing that these things happen and being flexible will go a long way. KEEP THE WORKSITE CLEAN – This may seem like an easy request, but it’s surprisingly a top pet peeve of builders. In addition to cleaning up construction trash, be sure to keep your personal trash picked up before leaving the work site each day.

KEEP YOUR COOL – Let’s face it, there are many challenging personalities that you will face in this line of work. You may encounter a rude neighbor who tries to cause a scene because they don’t want your truck parked in front of their house while you are delivering your product. The most important thing to remember in these scenarios is to keep your composure and remember that you are representing your company and the builder. If the situation escalates, call your supervisor or builder to assist. Although unpleasant, these encounters do happen, and it’s important to remember that it’s just temporary. UNDERSTAND THE BUILDER’S EXPECTATIONS for client visits to the job site – Most clients are very excited about their new home and likely want to check it out. Be sure to understand what your builder has communicated to his/her clients regarding client visits to the job site, so you can be prepared.

Diversify Your Garden With

Pollinator Plants by Jon Shoulders

This spring, Allisonville Nursery, Garden & Home can help to make sure your home garden is not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally beneficial at the same time. Throughout the season, you’ll find a special area in the store’s annual and perennial plant section designated for native and pollinator plants, which provide vital food sources for many butterfly, bee and bird species. “Pollinators are so important for our flowers and our food, and that cycle works its way up the food chain all the way to humans, so it’s crucial to have those pollinator-friendly species growing whenever we can,” says Beth Billheimer, Allisonville Nursery’s annual and perennial plant buyer. The nursery is offering a range of nativar plant species, which are crossbred to achieve certain colors or sizes, including asclepias, a crucial food source for the distinctive orange and black monarch butterfly, as well as baptisias and monardas, both of which put forth

bold colors and are also used as nectar sources for pollinator species. “A lot of people think of natives as being big, messy plants, so many breeders are working to make them a little smaller and neater, and they’re still useful to the pollinators,” Billheimer says. “One of the other great things about native plants is that since they grew up here they’re very acclimated to where we live and don’t require a lot of care.” Plants native to the Hoosier state are also typically drought-resistant, which means you won’t have to stand outside with a hose day after day to keep them flourishing if spring showers are in short supply. Billheimer says natives should be left out for the winter and can provide benefits even in the cold months. “A lot of the seedheads from those native plants are eaten by birds in the wintertime, so you can attract birds without having to put up a feeder in your yard,” she says, adding that garden herbs like dill, fennel, basil and parsley are also advantageous to pollinator

insects, including the swallowtail butterfly. “Another benefit is that you’re not looking out your window at a flat landscape in January, and they provide some visual interest and attraction.” Browse Allisonville Nursery, Garden & Home’s extensive selection of indoor and outdoor plants, flowers and accessories. Less is More Modern Window & Door Designs Make Your Home Stand Out by Jon Shoulders / photos by Brian Brosmer

WINDOW TRENDS: Simple, squared-off edges with minimal ornamentation and no casings, sleek finishes and dark hardware. Window Coverings? Consider foregoing them. Let the sun, as well as your window aesthetic, shine freely.

When it’s time to make decisions regarding styles for your doors and windows during a new build or home renovation, don’t forget less can be more. Joe Garcia, owner of Westfieldbased G&G Custom Homes, says simple, sleek choices can complement a wide range of home design schemes. “Homebuilders these days seem to be looking for a modern-style window, where you have clean lines and no curves or decorative flourishes,” Garcia says. “On the inside, you have darker windows and no casing at all – just drywall and putting more focus on the window itself.” Simple, squared-off edges with minimal ornamentation, sleek finishes, and dark hardware can help to bridge the classic with the contemporary, for those wanting a touch of the traditional while retaining modern flourishes throughout the home. “The modern farmhouse style has kind-of exploded – classic looks with modern function,” adds Ryan Lee of McComb Window and Door, a local distributor of Pella Windows & Doors products. “People are wanting their house to look very contemporary but at the same time traditional, and in order to get that people want a cleaner look on the windowless frame and more glass, with no trim.” What about the blinds versus curtains versus shutters dilemma? Consider foregoing all of the above and letting the sun, as well as your window aesthetic, shine freely. “In the last five years, we’ve had a huge influx of requests for larger window and door openings, where you have huge amounts of glass and there’s a lot of sunlight,” Lee says. “I did a house recently in downtown Indianapolis with no blinds at all, and you can see in the house day and night – people want to bring the outside in.” For additional information on G&G Custom Homes and to schedule a free consultation, call 317-418-7665 or visit them online at For more information on Pella Windows & Doors products and to learn more about Pella’s contemporary door, window and hardware lines, visit

The Blue Ribbon Bathroom by Courtney Walker

After living in their home with a carpeted master bath and overall outdated design, ACo clients Remington and Sarah Ramsey were ready for a renovation. Without a completely clear vision, the Ramsey Family visited ACo’s Carmel showroom and knew they wanted a big change with a “Blue Ribbon” design for their master bath. “All the best bath designs had a Blue Ribbon, and I wasn’t sure what we were going to do in our bath, but we were going to gut it and at the end, I wanted a Blue Ribbon,” Remington says. ACo design professional, Dani Kohl, stepped in to listen and deliver their needs and desires for a complete and updated master bathroom plan. “When I originally thought about putting a sauna in our bathroom, I just thought about the saunas you see at the home shows and wondered how could we have a stand-alone sauna in our bathroom without taking up too much of the space?” Remington says. Kohl’s design gave the clients exactly what they had asked for. “Once it was complete, even down to the detail of white paint, the design changed the entire space and it’s beyond everything we wanted and more,” Remington adds. For experienced ACo project manager, Rick Strezishar, it was an exciting project. “The plans looked awesome,” Strezishar says. As a kitchen and bath remodeling company, Strezishar has managed many successful project renovations, but the sauna added an uncommon and unique rejuvenating feature for the Ramsey family. Not only did the master bath include a fresh take on a tile-glass-combo shower and sauna but also included a relaxing soaking tub and double vanity with massive storage drawers for all their bath needs. Finishing touches such as chrome Delta faucets with a mixture of warm tile and cool cabinet colors brought the aesthetic together nicely. When you are ready to begin your “Blue Ribbon” master bath design and renovation you have always dreamt of, contact the ACo showroom to schedule your studio and design appointment at 317-688-1972 or visit them online WATCH OUR CUSTOMER STORY at to check out their VISIT: project gallery.

Making the Most Out of a Small Space by Suzanne Huntzinger / photos by Angela Jackson

Most homeowners prefer having a powder room bath for the convenience of guests. But, since the space is so small, it can sometimes be forgotten. Still, if the powder bath is planned and designed well, the small space can create an amazing impact and be quite a conversation piece. There are a few ways to approach the design of a powder room bath. Choosing the right countertop, cabinet, and mirrors can make the difference between a powder room that appears small and cramped and one that feels roomy and luxurious. You can incorporate unique design elements and add a lot of pizzazz to a compact space by simply elevating the vanity cabinet and adding a stone countertop with a stone vessel sink. “It’s an elegant and stunning look, especially with a wall mount faucet,” says Stone Artisans CEO, Cory Kroger. “The powder room is a great place to incorporate a vessel sink because it’s a lower traffic area than a master bath.” POWDER ROOM ILLUSION: The trick to making the space look larger is a wall-to-wall floor to ceiling mirror.

2 6 H AV E N

Adding the right lighting or some wall mount sconces to frame out the area make for a warm and beautiful finishing touch. Suspended countertops offer another amazing look. Building a floating valance out of wood and a custom hand-made stone top with an undermount sink gives a crisp look to the room with an open feel. Selecting a dark countertop and sink can make it look sleek, too. But the trick to making the space look larger is a wall-to-wall floor to ceiling mirror. “Don’t be afraid of using a darker countertop in this area to create the perfect impact,” Kroger says. “Due to its size, it will not overwhelm the space, especially when you balance the room with the reflection of the floor to ceiling mirror.” Adding some accessories like a flower arrangement will help brighten the area and make the room feel warm and inviting. Another great way to maximize the space in your powder room, is to incorporate a furniture style vanity cabinet in conjunction with using consistent materials for the countertop and mirror above. A large, traditional cabinet can crowd the room, but using an open cabinet, like a furniture piece, makes the space look bigger. Adding just the right stone countertop with a matching stone framed mirror creates a unique look. “The flow of the stone countertop into the matching stone framed mirror not only builds continuity, but it adds a spectacular effect,” Kroger adds. “You can highlight the countertop by adding a three-inch thick mitered edge while softening the stone mirror frame with a large bevel.” Make plans to jazz up your powder room and start with stone. Celebrating 5 Years OF SUPERIOR ROOFING SERVICES by Jon Shoulders

As its fifth anniversary approaches this year, Indianapolis-based Watergate Roofing remains one of Central Indiana’s premier licensed, bonded and insured general contractors specializing in replacement and repair work for roofs, siding and gutters. “We’ll take care of you at each step of the process, whether it’s a minor repair or full replacement, or if it is an insurance claim, we will meet with the adjuster,” owner Millie Hindes says, adding that the company serves Indy and surrounding counties. “We’re very low-pressure when it comes to inspections, and we’ll let you know the full range and scope of your issues.” Hindes says spring and fall are optimal times of the year to check attics and exteriors for roof, siding and gutter

issues, and Watergate Roofing offers free estimates for home improvement and renovation projects and potential repairs. “As owner of the company and someone who is currently expecting a child, I know how busy my customers’ lives can get, and how much people want to get their repairs taken care of quickly and smoothly when something goes wrong,” Hindes says. “Because of the buildup of snow, ice, branches and debris on your roof, let alone hail and wind damage, it can be quite a process figuring out all the areas where your leaks and issues are by springtime,” Hindes adds. “Leaks can occur slowly and gradually over weeks or even months, and we’re here to help you through the process of pinpointing and fixing those problems.” The name and tagline for the company,

“Watergate Roofing: We cover up what’s inside,” is a playful reference to the famous 1970s political scandal, Nixon’s cover up, which Hindes says is lost on most people, especially the younger crowd. “I, and all 65-year-old men, think it is hilarious!” she says. Bring On the Color! by Kristen Moorehouse

What better place to bring some much-needed color in than your home? It is often tricky for people to know how to add color to a room for it to feel balanced and complete. For my clients, I always start with a neutral ground in their space. The large furniture items are typically in varied colors of gray, greige, tan, black or white fabric and then color is added in with the décor. I use art, accessories, pillows, and rugs to bring the right amount of color to the space so that it doesn’t feel overwhelming. You don’t need color on every piece of furniture or on every wall, just a few things here and there. Along with an accent color, greenery is a must needed accomplice for an interesting colorful space. Foliage brings life to a room and can be live or faux in the form of succulents, moss or even a fun fig tree. Just a few of these things sprinkled around on a tabletop or in a bookcase will do the trick. Using these décor items allows for versatility in switching out accent colors when the season (or your mood) changes. For help with bringing in color in your home, contact Ardent Design today at 317-850-6145 or visit them online at

Though Joe Garcia was born in Spain, he moved to the Hoosier state when he was just three weeks old. “I like to tell people that I was made in the USA but born in Spain,” says Garcia, who grew up in northwest Indiana. He graduated from Purdue University, then worked for seven years at U.S. Steel in Gary, Ind., before relocating to Indianapolis in 2001. He was working at Eli Lilly when he decided to build himself a house. “My background is in engineering but I’ve always managed projects and people,” Garcia says. “At the steel mills, I was managing the mechanical and electrical guys as well as production and maintenance. Building a house was no different. It was all about getting the right people to do the right thing at the right time.” He was working at Lilly when he met his wife Mindy, a Realtor. In 2003, the pair launched G&G Custom Homes (her maiden name began with a G). The couple now has two sons: Christian (12) and Gabe (10). “I love the sense of accomplishment I get knowing that I’m building a family’s dream home,” says Garcia, who builds 10-12 homes a year so as to never sacrifice quality workmanship or quality time with his family. When he first started his company, Garcia asked friends to share their “building horror stories” so he knew what to avoid doing. The issues typically revolved around two things: 1) the homeowner being promised that the structure would be finished by Date X and not delivering on that promise, and 2) getting hit during closing with a gigantic change order bill. To avoid such headaches, Garcia sets upfront expectations. “I start by asking people what they’re looking for,” Garcia says. “Then I price that all into the budget so there are no surprises.” BuilderTREND, a web-based communication tool, enables homeowners to track selections and spending online as well as access their schedule and budget. They can also review their portfolio throughout the building process. Even though Garcia employs a superintendent and designer, he remains the main point of contact for homeowners, offering his own brand of TLC. “I build every house like I’m building it for my family,” Garcia says. For more information, visit or call 317-418-7665.

Are thinking about refreshing your garage floor and the rest of your concrete needs a little TLC? With summer on the horizon, your timing couldn’t be better. “With the popularity of outdoor living spaces, in the warmer months we tend to get more customer requests to do several projects at once,” says Nick Knight, co-owner of Indy Floor Coating. “There’s definitely an increased demand to refresh and restore aging porches, patios, and walkways.” He notes a recent job involved a garage, front porch and sidewalk, and back patio at one local residence. “It’s a great way for the homeowner to address all of their cracked, stained and unattractive concrete at one time,” Knight says. It’s no surprise the same industrial-grade coatings that customers love in the garage are ideal for exterior use as well. The hybrid epoxy polymers have an exceptional ability to restore and protect a concrete surface. Decorative flake systems are available in many natural stone colors – perfect for outdoors. Leisure Pools Presented by Indy Fiberglass Pools is Helping You Live Your Life of Leisure.

hroughout his 30 years of experience in the landscaping and construction design/build industry, Rob Delaby has lived and led by one simple maxim: quality over quantity. It’s a motto that’s helped grow his business, Oasis Outdoor Living & Landscapes, into one of Central Indiana’s premier landscaping companies and solidified his reputation for high-quality products, integrity, and service – attributes he parlayed into his latest company, Indy Fiberglass Pools. “I started Indy Fiberglass Pools because I saw a need for higher-quality products and higher-quality service in the pool market. Initially, there were those who thought it was simply to grow Oasis’ business, but in fact, I’ve partnered with some of Oasis’ main landscaping competitors to ensure my team and I provide the absolute best possible experience and service for our customers,” Delaby says. “I don’t want to be the biggest pool installer, I just want to be the best. And if that means partnering with some of my competitors to ensure that, I’ll do it.” This pursuit of quality and mission to offer a better pool product to Central Indiana residents inevitably led Delaby to a company who, like him, has built a business on the foundation quality – Leisure Pools. “Indy Fiberglass Pools is the exclusive Central Indiana dealer of Leisure Pools swimming pools and products,” Delaby says. “No other pool company invests as heavily

into quality control for their products. I stand behind Leisure Pools 100 percent.” Founded in Queensland, Australia, the family owned and operated Leisure Pools is one of the world’s largest composite fiberglass swimming pool manufacturers – delivering more than 50,000 high-quality swimming pools to homeowners in more than 22 countries around the world. Their current North American manufacturing facility, located in Knoxville, Tennessee, is the largest manufacturing facility for fiberglass swimming pools in the world. “For us, quality is key – in our process and in our manufacturing,” says David Pain, President and CoFounder of Leisure Pools. “Coupled with great designs, we use state of the art production processes and superior raw materials, backed by in-house research and stringent quality controls, to ensure that the quality of every swimming pool is the top in the market no matter where it is in the world.” Indy Fiberglass Pools offers a variety of designs, sizes and a multitude of features and benefits that makes creating your dream swimming pool easy. But one of the greatest benefits, according to Delaby, is the quality because of Leisure Pools’ composite fiberglass construction using corrosive resistant vinyl ester resin for each layer of the swimming pool construction. As a result, Leisure Pools provides the best available warranty on the market today. “Fiberglass swimming pools offer a host of benefits concrete and vinyl liner pools simply cannot,” Delaby says.

• SPEED OF INSTALLATION: All Indy Fiberglass Pools are built in factory-controlled conditions so when it arrives to your home, the work is already done — the structure, the finish and the engineering. You could be swimming in as little as four days versus the months it takes to install a concrete pool. • PRODUCT LONGEVITY: Indy Fiberglass Pools are built to last. “The components of our pools undergo rigorous testing in our lab,” Pain says. “We test our laminates by boiling them to more than 200 degrees Fahrenheit to see how that laminate is going to perform over a period of time. Some of our tests show our laminates lasting more than 170 years.” Leisure Pools also offers a Lifetime Structural Warranty and Lifetime Structural Osmosis Warranty on every one of its swimming pools.

While fiberglass may easily best its concrete and vinyl liner cousins, not all fiberglass swimming pools are created equal according to Delaby, “What sets Leisure Pools apart is its Composite Armour™.” 6 LAYERS OF CUTTING Designed to significantly reinforce EDGE QUALITY the swimming pool with a strategically integrated laminate, this patented technology consists of a blend of DuPont™ Kevlar®, Carbon Fiber and Basalt Fiber.

Why is Composite Armour™ Important? Well, with changing weather conditions, exposure to greater extremes of weather is becoming more and more common – from floods one year to droughts the next. And anything installed in the ground is exposed to the effects of ground movement, whether swelling in a flood or contracting in a drought. Indy Fiberglass Pools recognized this and with the use of Leisure Pools’ Composite Armour™, your pool will have additional flexural and tensile strength properties that better withstand these ground movement changes – making their swimming pools one of, if not, the most advanced pool product in the world. “Indy Fiberglass Pools was founded on quality, I want customers to feel confident that the pool they’re buying and putting in the ground is strong, durable, and will last a lifetime,” Delaby says. “Indy Fiberglass Pools is dedicated to building the pool of your dreams, so you can find your life of leisure.” To learn more about Indy Fiberglass Pools, visit www.indyfiberglasspools. com. Or give them a call at 317.764.8779, they are currently scheduling summer installations.

3 Tile Trends for Spring by Courtney Walker / photos by Amy Payne

Tile selections will make an undoubtedly big difference in your home. If you have a new build, renovation or are simply looking for a small spruce up in any space, take the time to visit your local Daltile showroom. The showroom designer, Jenn Wilson, and the entire Indianapolis Daltile team strive to keep the best and brightest trends on display to help make your design process cohesive. This spring, we are happy to share some trends you must keep in mind for your upcoming projects. UNFINISHED EDGING Even by switching up the installation orientation of a simple subway tile, this end

goal can be obtained. The edgy look of an unfinished edge will give the ultimate spunk and unique style you have seen in the design magazines. All shapes, sizes, curvatures, colors and grout can be used during this process – it just takes stepping outside the box to believe it will look great in your space. The “Illuminary in Icicle” by Daltile is a glass herringbone mosaic to check out for this installation method. PATTERNED CEMENT TILES Also known as encaustic tile, these elegant and durable tiles have some history but are making the “what goes around, comes around” saying

true once again. Back from circa 1930 to 1940 in America, we are seeing these tiles laid everywhere throughout the home. The color and pattern variations of Daltile’s “Quartetto” can meet anyone’s style and preference and it becomes another fun feature in your interior or exterior space. MATTE FINISH Taking any simple or intricate tile shape and selecting a matte finish will automatically place the focus on the tile shape and color rather than the shininess factor. It’s a simple and usually affordable way to bring simplicity into the room.

Daltile has an array of matte finish tiles – the “Rittenhouse Square” being a designer classic go-to. Tile can be an investment in any home, but Daltile is there to help every step of the way. Make an appointment to begin your selections by calling the showroom at 317-841-0883 or visiting them online at

Kid Collaborations by Courtney Walker

Ninety percent of our time is spent in an interior space meaning we individually develop habits and behaviors where we dwell and work. Whether that’s energy, comfort, calmness, or joy – it’s amazing to think interior design can dictate demeanor for the day or comfort at night. Children are no different and some of our favorite memories during the design process have included the little ones. From tagging along with their parents

at our downtown office for meetings to including kid-friendly snacks and drinks at the big reveal, we provide a full-service, family-friendly design collaboration with our clients. COLLABORATION It starts from the beginning! Asking little clients some of the same questions as their parents (simplified) or leaving a textile sample for the whole family to vote on keeps the design scheme interactive. We also try including kids in any special project for their room or playroom – that gives them ownership and pride in the project. At Polish, tears of happiness usually flow when clients send us pictures or videos of their kids reacting during the full home reveal. We feed off their joy and excitement. There’s no greater privilege in our job. COLOR Color theory and how it affects our moods and behavior is a consideration we make when sourcing EVERYTHING

that goes in your home. By selecting a color scheme that compliments your child’s disposition mixed with preference, the room design becomes one more space for them to enjoy and be a kid. From wallpaper to unique textile applications – we promise to have fun with it! TEXTILES There’s a reason some of the biggest names in the fabric industry are unveiling their first lines of Crypton fabrics – families, children, pets. Crypton is the latest technology making fabrics stain, odor and moisture resistant. Need we say more? Textiles (in some form) can be incorporated in every square inch of your child’s room. We would be honored to work with you and your family to help curate the perfect space and art. Visit our website and follow along on our Instagram adventure @polishinteriorandartdesign.

No Pressure, No Hassle, No Problem by Courtney Walker / photo by Brian Brosmer

Nestled in one of the many charming Nora neighborhoods sits a 1953 two-story brick colonial. First and second time homeowners Matthew and Courtney Pope have enjoyed their past two years in the home, but with the hot Midwest summer on the horizon, they knew a new HVAC system was needed. Although shopping HVAC systems might not sound like the most fun for newlyweds, Homesense made the process and decision an easy one for the Popes! “It was a seamless process from the initial visit through installation, Homesense kept us informed and clearly communicated all pertinent information,” Courtney says. The technology Homesense utilizes during the selection process alleviates what can otherwise be an anxious decision for a home-owner. Following the home visit, the homeowner receives a custom interactive document displaying a variety of options and packages. As first time purchasers of an HVAC system, Courtney and Matthew knew that trusting the advice of their contractor would be essential. “We never felt as if Homesense was pressuring us into products or services,” she says. “In fact, after discussing a number of items, including our personal temperature preferences and the insulation and natural effects on the home, we were advised that certain (more expensive) models are simply unnecessary.” In addition to earning the customers trust, Homesense sends an email with a photo and bio of each tech that will be working at the home. The personal touch, combined with expertise and effective communication are the cornerstones which Homesense owners Brian Schutt and Jesse Cross feel differentiates the company. “We were homeowners first before starting a heating and cooling company,” Schutt says. “Empathy for homeowners’ frustrating situations is at the core of everything we do. No one wants to feel pressured, ever, especially in a complicated and potentially expensive emergency.” Need a low pressure partner in heating and cooling? Visit Homesense at or call 317-670-0171. A View From Inside EXPERTS WEIGH IN ON WINDOW DESIGN & TREATMENTS by Christy Heitger-Ewing

PRO WINDOW TIP: Christina Greive of Polish Interior Art & Design recommends letting the light in. Natural light is a quintessential part of design as it warms a space and promotes healthy living.

When you think of designing your home, chances are the first thing you think of isn’t windows and their coverings, but according to Home Artisans of Indiana, it really should be. Ryan Lee, trade specialist with Pella Windows & Doors, says it’s wise to build 2x6 rather than 2x4 windows for several reasons. Not only are 2x6 walls more energy efficient since there is more room for insulation, but extending the wall pocket by two inches allows homeowners to install whatever window treatments they want as “Homeowners are shades and blinds won’t intrude inside the room. doing a drywall “If you build a window with a 2x4 wall, you wrap back to the really only have 0.75 of an inch to be able to put a blind or anything on that window,” Lee says. face of the window “People come back to us and ask what they do to because they want fix it. Caryn O’Sullivan, owner of Drapery Street agrees that the earlier in the planning process a homeowner consults with a window covering designer, the better and more integrated the end result will be. Considering how to approach a window covering on a casement window is different than a slider or a tilted window. “If we can get in at the architectural stage, we can ask questions about wiring and motorization,” O’Sullivan says. “We can ask if the homeowner wants the coverings to recess into “If we can get in at their ceiling or into the window well. If so, we’ve got to plan that now.” the architectural Christina Greive, Principal Artist and Costage, we can Owner of Polish Interior and Art Design, notes ask questions that natural light is a quintessential part of design as it warms a space and promotes healthy living. about wiring and So, of course, does a great view. motorization.” Though there are times when the sun is – CARYN O’SULLIVAN heating up a room at a certain time of day or a Owner, Drapery Street glare is crossing the television screen, experts can help homeowners address such issues without sacrificing view or design. “A window is a perfect base for window treatments which are essential to creating a cohesive and inviting design,” Greive says. “A variety of window shapes, sizes, grilles, and decorative trim all provide a large amount of visual interest in terms of design.” Contact Home Artisans of Indiana at or visit them HOME ARTISANS OF INDIANA online at to learn more.

With a few weeks of school remaining, summer bucket lists have been dreamt up, camp is booked and lake weekends are scheduled. But have you ever found the fun moments being overshadowed by the stress of keeping up at home? Enter the Family Command Center, a solution that keeps the entire family on track with everything that needs to be completed during the week.

HERE ARE FIVE ESSENTIALS TO HELP YOU CREATE ONE OF YOUR OWN: 1. LOCATION Your command center should be in a highly trafficked area that is regularly seen by each member of the family. Use a blank wall in your mudroom, the inside of a kitchen cupboard or take over a corner of your laundry room.

2. PERSONAL STATION Relish in the space you have by keeping it tidy. These spaces can quickly get overrun with clutter. Add monogrammed tote bags for each family member to store items that need to travel to bedrooms or other locations in the house.

3. FAMILY CALENDAR Create a family calendar a week or two at a time that highlights each family member’s commitments in their favorite color. Set aside 15 minutes each Sunday to update and sync with your electronic version.

4. GOALS Add a whiteboard to keep track of chores for the kiddos and weekly goals for adults. Don’t forget to include fun achievements you’d like to conquer as a family and how you will celebrate once you’ve met milestones along the way.

5. MAIL + RECYCLING STATION Tackle that stack of mail the minute you walk in the door. Keep a recycling container close by to toss junk mail. Create a small station to hold mail that “Needs Attention” and schedule a few times throughout the week to send RSVPs, pay bills and tackle other important documents.

I’ve heard of a Pivot door but “What exactly is it, how much does it cost, and will it work on my house?”

You Ask, We Answer WHAT IS A PIVOT DOOR? by Cori Brown

4 6 H AV E N

Although all the rage, not everyone is familiar with pivot doors because they are fairly new to the Central Indiana Market. A Pivot door functions different than your traditional “hinged” door. A pivot door swings on a set of pins mounted at the top and bottom of the door versus a traditional door that hangs from hinges in the frame. Pivot doors allow you to build a much bigger door than you could ever imagine because of the pivot hardware that distributes the weight without detracting from the functionality of the door. Pivot doors are used in both exterior and interior applications. Pivot doors will be on the higher end as far as price point generally starting at $10,000-$15,000 and going up from there for a front entry system. One of the biggest questions we get regarding pivot doors used in exterior applications is “Can I have a pivot door in Indiana because of our weather?” Great Question! The answer is yes, but there are definitely considerations to take into account. Pivot doors are available in wood, metal and full lite glass. The most common pivot doors we see in Indiana are made out of wood. This is probably because most wood door companies make large oversized door slabs which can be used in a pivot application. An oversized pivot door made out of wood in our climate will most likely experience warping and splitting, which will lead to difficulty with air tightness and energy efficiency. You will definitely need an expansive overhang protecting the door from the damaging uv rays of the sun, but even with that a warranty for a wood pivot door will be 1-2 years tops. Metal pivot doors or glass pivot doors with steel support structure are going to be your best option for a pivot door in Central Indiana. With this option you will not have to worry about warping or splitting like with wood. Many of these door options are built in Europe so they not only meet but surpass the U.S. standards for energy efficiency and safety. A company in Venice Italy, Oikos Architetture D’Ingresso, produces a glass pivot door with a steel frame that can reach sizes up to 11.5 feet wide by 20.5 feet tall while still meeting the stringent European energy codes. Should you need extra security, they produce the same glass door up to 7 feet wide by 11.5 tall while still being thermally broken, bulletproof and sledgehammer proof. Pivot doors truly allow for a dramatic and grandiose entrance to any home and, if done correctly, will provide excellent functionality, safety and efficiency. Franklin Window & Door is here to help with all your pivot door needs. Give them a call at 317-993-3660 to schedule an in-home design consultation. Should I Motorize M Y W I N DOW T RE AT M EN TS?

With a focus on removing cords from blinds and shades for child safety, the advances in motorization made by window treatment companies over the past few years has been dramatic. We prefer Hunter Douglas PowerView Technology because it combines a revolutionary system with the highest quality shades and blinds in the market. Motorization and custom window treatments are not only an investment, but chosen correctly they can enhance the lighting, privacy, security and design aesthetic of your home.

WHEN TO MOTORIZE You can motorize every window treatment in your home or just certain ones. These are common situations to consider motorizing: 1. OUT OF REACH WINDOWS You certainly don’t want to get out a step stool every time you need to raise, lower, or open the blinds on windows that are out of reach. Consider motorized window treatments on windows that cannot be easily reached. 2. HOMEOWNERS WHO TRAVEL FREQUENTLY If you are a frequent traveller, consider motorized window treatments — at least on your street-facing windows. A home whose window treatments never move might as well be a written invitation to burglars. PowerView motorization can be set to automatically move your window coverings throughout the day, giving the illusion you are home. The Remote ConnectTM feature allows you to operate your window treatments from anywhere.

3. HOMES WITH CATS If you have a cat residing in your home, you inevitably know the terror they can unleash on window treatments. With PowerView motorization, there’s no need to go around the house before you leave pulling up the blinds and shades. 4. FOR AN ENERGY EFFICIENT HOME If energy efficiency is a top priority for you, motorization is a must. PowerView technology can also be integrated with your Nest® Smart Thermostat to optimize energy savings. Create custom Scenes that activate your window treatments and adjust when your Nest Learning Thermostat senses you are away. 5. FOR SLEEP ZEALOTS Window treatments can have a huge impact on sleep quality. Pair blackout window treatments with PowerView motorization and program them to close at a certain time each night. Set your window treatments to automatically open with the sunrise (PowerView will adjust daily based on local sunrise times) or at your specified wake time.

Motorized window treatments are about more than convenience. They solve a variety of issues and offer safety measures, energy benefits, and create beautiful ambiance in your home all day and evening. Clean Hardwood Floors by Courtney Walker

5 0 H AV E N

Thinking about installing new hardwood floors but not sure how much maintenance they will require? Good News! Hardwood floors are one of the easiest to care for. Who has time for all that maintenance anyways? You might be wondering do you use a steamer, vacuum, mop, chemicals, water only? Not to worry, ACo and Shaw floors have you covered with a quick-to-follow four-step guide to keep you and your floors looking good!

1 Sweep, dust or vacuum the floor regularly to avoid a collection of dust and dirt that could scratch or dull hardwood floors.

2 Periodically clean the floor with cleaning products made specifically for pre-finished hardwood floor care, such as Shaw’s R2X Hard Surface Cleaner. It’s always a safe bet to check the manufacturer’s care guide before trying any untested product.

3 For spots such as candle wax or chewing gum, harden the spot with ice and then gently scrape with a plastic scraper, such as a credit card. Be careful not to scratch the flooring surface. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.

4 For tough stains, you may need to use a heavy-duty stain remover made specifically for hardwood floors.

Some days you might not be thrilled to clean, but it should be easy when you are ready, so you have more time to do what you love. Need help navigating the numerous hardwood options? Visit the ACo showroom in Carmel or give them a call to schedule your appointment at 317-688-1872.

It’s sad but it is the truth – once installed, you cannot see the model number on many products, and this gives a dishonest person an opportunity to cheat you, and they may. Be careful!

DO YOUR HOMEWORK Check references and make certain that you’re doing business with a reputable A/V and alarm company.

Pick up any home improvement magazine and there will be an article about the importance of selecting quality craftsman and tradesmen, but doing this is imperative when dealing with audio video, security and alarm contractors. I’ve been in this industry for 24 years, and I’ve seen a lot of shady dealers come and go. There are few industries that have such opportunity for dishonesty. If you hire a landscaper to do a project, you can see what you have paid for. If you hire a painter to paint a wall, you can see the work and assess the value. But if you hire someone to put speakers in the ceiling, do you know what model number was actually installed? Last year, I proposed Klipsch in ceiling speakers for a project, per our clients request. A competitor created a comparable proposal showing Klipsch speakers with a heavy discount and earned their business. Several months later when that dealer was unresponsive, we were asked to service the system and upon inspection we found that the speakers were a no-name Internet knock off product, that sells for about 1/7 the cost of the proposed speakers. Over the years I’ve seen the same situation with cameras, alarm components, automation equipment, and computer network hardware. It’s sad but it is the truth – once installed, you cannot see the model number on many products, and this gives a dishonest person an opportunity to cheat you, and they may. Be careful! With most industries it is possible to inspect the work, and confirm that you have received the products and services that were agreed on. There are other industries where that is simply not the case. Check references and make certain that you’re doing business with a reputable A/V and alarm company. If you want an estimate on your next project, give Digital Sight & Sound a call at 317-848-0101.

Are You Enjoying Your Home Outdoor Space? by Phil Hotle

5 4 H AV E N

LANDSCAPING TRENDS: Homeowners are adding more outdoore seating, firepits, ceiling fans, heaters and entertainment systems to their outdoor spaces. But simple things like adding string lights and rugs can also improve ambiance.

Homeowners care about the entertainment value a backyard offers, and they are devoting money to sprucing these spaces up, according to the latest Houzz Landscaping Survey – based on responses by more than 750 homeowners who are either in the middle of a landscaping project or planning one. Homeowners are investing in several landscaping projects to make their outdoor areas more livable, such as adding more seating with lounge furniture and benches. They are also adding fire pits, ceiling fans and patio heaters so they can extend the use of their outdoor space into more seasons. Owners also say outdoor string lights and rugs can improve the outdoor ambiance too. Technology is also being added more into the outdoors. Homeowners have added or upgraded entertainment systems outside, by either opting to add an outdoor television or wired and solar speakers. Most of the outdoor projects are occurring in the backyard at 70 percent, but 39 percent of homeowners say they updated their front yards and 30 percent say their side yards. Homeowners who are adding or updating items in their front yard are focusing on curb appeal, such as adding flower beds and borders shrubs and perennials. The costs can vary widely for how much homeowners are spending on their landscaping projects. In the survey, more than half of homeowners who completed their outdoor renovation spent more than $10,000 and nearly one-third renovated spending less than $5,000. Homeowners say that since finishing their remodeling project, they are spending more time entertaining outside and enjoying their new space by relaxing or gardening.

Giving Back by Matt Keating

David and Jodi Burtner, co-owners of Burtner Electric firmly believe in giving back to people all over the world. For years, they have served others, both in third world countries, and in their own city. They believe helping people starts in their own hometown. It’s a philosophy that has served them well. They have been serving Central Indiana for more than 30 years. Because they enjoy working together as a family, David and Jodi started Burtner Electric in 1986 as a family business. “We feel truly blessed to have started a business in Central Indiana at a time when housing starts sky rocketed and continue to do so,” Jodi says. “We have grown over the years, and are proud to have 40 employees. We want to be your go-to electrician when you need electrical work performed in your home or office.” A FAMILY BUSINESS All four of David and Jodi’s children have worked for Burtner Electric at one time in their lives. When they aren’t working, the family enjoys watching Butler basketball. “While we don’t want to show bias towards any Indiana teams, David attends Butler basketball games to cheer on those Bulldogs,” Jodi says. They also spend a lot of their free time giving back to help people in need. “David has traveled to many third world countries to work on mission teams in order to serve those less fortunate than we are,” Jodi adds. “He has MAKING A DIFFERENCE David Burtner has worked assisted after hurricanes on mission teams in Haiti, Aftrica and Guatemala to help those in need. and earthquakes to build schools in Haiti lives,” David says. “I enjoy making and Africa and to build a difference in their lives and in our homes in Guatemala for world.” David and Jodi Burtner single mothers who do Burtner Electric also gives back not have an adequate to their community through supporting the Noblesville Boys & home to raise their children.” BURTNER ELECTRIC Girls Club, local churches, local food pantries, Life Centers, Make “It uplifts your spirit and brings 787 N 10th Street a Wish, Butler Basketball and more. joy to your life when you spend your Noblesville, IN 46060 Visit Burtner Electric online at for more vacation time helping those who 317.773.7663 information or give them a call at 317-773-7663. have experienced difficulties in their

Renovations That Really Pay Off by Christy Heitger-Ewings / photos by Brian Brosmer

NICHOLAS CONSTRUCTION NICHOLAS CONSTRUCTION 8049 North 600 West, Ste 100B McCordsville, Indiana 46055 317.335.4706

5 8 H AV E N

The hot new trend in newer home construction is creating a “landing area” for members of the household – a place that can not only store shoes, bookbags and coats, but also iPads, laptops, and chargers. “Homeowners want a mud room on the first floor right off the garage,” says Kyle Nicholas, president of Nicholas Construction. “Incorporating outlets with USB chargers is requested because so many teachers these days require students to bring laptops or iPads to school daily. This way kids can put everything they need in one spot and it allows devices to charge overnight.” Another popular item on a homeowner’s wish list is the convenience of positioning the laundry room closer to the master bedroom. Nicholas recently completed a project in which he moved the washer & dryer upstairs, building off of some dead space in the master bathroom to create a 200-square foot laundry room. Another homeowner had an existing 6x12 foot laundry room with a closet that served as a catch-all for everything. It didn’t have a good shelving system, plus it lacked decent lighting, so Nicholas removed that closet and added floor-to-ceiling custom cabinetry that incorporated detergents, vacuum cleaner, and other household supplies. At the opposite end, he installed a locker system, complete with open shelving for book bags and shoes. “Homeowners often request a mud room sink or laundry tub for cleaning dirty shoes or soaking soiled clothes,” says Nicholas, who loves recreating floor plans to make rooms more accommodating for families. He also enjoys installing custom cabinetry that matches a room’s purpose. For example, Nicholas notes that a large container of laundry detergent weighs approximately 15 pounds, so to lift that up and set it above a washing machine takes a good bit of muscle. “We want to do anything we can to strategically place a cabinet that will make it easier for someone to dispense their detergent,” Nicholas says. “We also try to utilize any dead space in a house to make it more functional.” If you are ready to get started on your next project, give Nicholas Construction a call at 317-335-4706 or visit them online at

When it comes to outdoor living, amenities have improved dramatically in recent years. For example, one can create an outdoor

kitchen that includes a grill, refrigeration, warming drawers, burners, and everything that is needed to prepare an entire meal outdoors without having to run in and out of the house during preparations. Outdoor furniture has also become more design savvy. Outré features original custom upholstered furniture designs, including a line of outdoor furniture that’s made in Indiana, waterproof and resistant to fading. “The pieces have cast aluminum bases so are made to withstand the elements,” Kleymeyer says. “Modern with clean lines, they are comfortable pieces – you cannot tell if they belong inside or outside.” Home automation is also gaining popularity as cutting-edge technology serves to simplify lives by reflecting the different ways in which a homeowner will live in a home. “We have professionals who can set up a house to serve a homeowner’s needs and habits,” Kleymeyer says. “For instance, if you’re entertaining, with the click of a

button, your lights will dim, your AC will bump up a couple of notches, your favorite playlist will turn on, and your ice maker will kick into high gear.” In the morning, a homeowner can press “AM” and the shades will rise halfway, a couple of the lights on the stairs will flip on, and coffee will begin to brew. “Home automation essentially sets the different scenes of your day,” Kleymeyer says. “Growing a business is hard,” says Brian Schutt co-founder of Refinery46 and co-owner of Homesense Heating and Cooling. “We experienced it since starting Homesense and want to help other companies learn from our experience because this city needs more great home service providers.” Out of personal experience and a desire to create a unique solution to help companies grow, Schutt, Jesse Cross co-owner of Homesense, and Tom Lazzara, owner of Custom Living, have launched Refinery46 – a first-of-it’s-kind co-working space designed to support home services and construction firms. The 30,000 square foot facility located in Midtown Indianapolis near the intersection of 46th & Keystone is already 60 percent occupied and bearing fruits for its early adopters. “Our business has grown tremendously since we moved into Refinery46,” says Sean Rapp, Owner of Heritage Builders, a boutique home builder in Indianapolis. “The relationships made and support given from Refinery46 has been a major part of our ability to navigate through the challenges that growth creates.” Refinery46 boasts space to fit almost any size business looking to grow – from one man shops that only need a place to get mail, material deliveries, and good internet, to established firms hoping to find more flex space for sales reps and training space for a growing team. In addition to traditional offices, the facility has more than 8,000 square feet of common area workspace, multiple meeting rooms, a1,800 square foot training area, and a complimentary coffee bar. On top of all the physical amenities, Refinery46 provides ongoing business skills workshops for members focused on best practices unique to the home service and construction industries. “With cost-effective workspace, a central location, and a collaborative atmosphere, we are already seeing that the best local companies are choosing Refinery46 as the place to grow their business,” Schutt says. Celebrates 25 Years by Matt Keating

Randy Sorrell, owner Surroundings by Natureworks+

Surroundings by NatureWorks is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and Owner Randy Sorrell has his sights set on the next 25 years. “It’s an honor and a complete joy to be celebrating 25 years in business this June, and a privilege to lead the market with ideas, solutions and changing how families live,” Sorrell says. “We’ve been creating incredible living spaces, both inside and out, through our architect, design and build business and will continue to do that.” As summer draws near, Surroundings

by NatureWorks is focused on delivering premier outdoor spaces to customers. “We believe the most critical drivers of outdoor luxury have more to do with what we refer to as ‘Triple Threats,’” Sorrell says. “First, we love our patio and landscape, but don’t love maintaining it. Second, the sun is great, but we need some shade too. Third, we dig our neighbors, but dig our privacy even more.” Get started on your outdoor space today. Phil Hotle, a Realtor with REMAX Hotle Homes, always goes the extra mile for his clients. With a lifetime of experience in sales, he loves helping people look for a great new home that will fit their needs. He also enjoys helping sellers successfully market and sell their homes for the highest price possible. “Before I was Realtor, I was a manufactures rep for 30 years,” Hotle says. “So, I have always been in sales, but now in a different commodity helping my clients buy and sell homes. I feel that my strengths are in customer service and always doing the right things for my clients. If you do a good job for them, then you have a client for life.” Phil believes the time to buy or sell is now. “Homes are bought and sold year-round,” Hotle says. “Typically, people with families want to be in their new home before the start of school or by the holidays, and I can help with that. We will find just the right house for you, and at the end of the day, everyone will be happy.”
