“COMMUNITY CONVERSATION” program as part of its ongoing research and planning efforts. Aspire Johnson County, a program of JCDC, was one of four Indiana entities selected for the Community Conversation series.

Indiana’s Community Conversation series, a program to help evaluate an area’s assets and determine current and future needs, is coming to Johnson County. Over the past five years, more than 20 Indiana regions have participated in the series.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for us to bring in multiple resources and help us better identify our strengths and challenges,” said Dana Monson, Director of Business Development for the Johnson County Development Corporation, JCDC. To some, Tracy Road is simply a road that connects S.R. 135 and US 31. However, to someone from New Whiteland, the road is the location for one of the southside’s proudest memorials. Proctor Park was dedicated on May 3, 2008, to honor all of our nation’s veterans and hometown heroes. But in particular, one very special veteran. Sgt. Joseph E. Proctor was the son of New Whiteland residents Lloyd (Rabbit) and Sharon Proctor. On May 3, 2006, he was serving his country in Iraq when he willingly placed himself in harm’s way.

On that day, a dump truck loaded with 350 pounds of explosives breached the wall at the compound where he and numerous other soldiers were stationed. Proctor stood between his comrades and the enemy vehicle, fired his weapon, striking and killing the driver. Unfortunately, when the truck rolled to a stop, short of the barracks where soldiers lay sleeping, the vehicle detonated, killing Proctor. Standing tall

that day, Proctor once again put others first and unselfishly gave his life to save so many others.

The story of Proctor moved New Whiteland’s Clerk-Treasurer, Maribeth Alspach, so much so that she set out to create a memorial in honor of Proctor, and the many others who have laid down their lives for their country. That vision became a reality on May 3, 2008, the second anniversary of Proctor’s death. As echoed through testimonies during Proctor Park’s dedication, “This park is a small but sincere means of thanking all of our military personnel, those who have served and those currently serving. This park is a tribute to all veterans, those living and deceased. We would also like to thank the families of these brave men and women and honor each of you as well for your sacrifices as you are called upon to face separation from your loved ones. There is no greater country in the world than this, the United States of America. We are so blessed to call this home, and we are forever in your debt for

willingly defending our freedom, protecting our borders and keeping us safe.”

In 2012, the Hoosier Heroes Wall was added to Proctor Park. This wall has the names of more than 200 Indiana soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in our Armed Forces since September 11, 2001. Present at the wall’s dedication were two sets of parents who had sons listed on that memorial. One of those men had also served in Vietnam. Thinking back on the way Vietnam veterans were treated as they arrived home from war and grateful for the sacrifice these war heroes made, Alspach was once again inspired to add to Proctor Park. On September 27, 2014, the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial was dedicated. Mark Trina, a Navy veteran, who designed, constructed and donated the Hoosier Heroes Wall, also designed the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial. Trina’s dad had served in Vietnam in the United States Navy. The painstaking labor was done by Danny Wilson, a brick mason and former Navy Seal.

After the dedication of the Vietnam Memorial, many reached out to thank Alspach for her work in making the memorials happen. As she points out though, memorials such as these could never become a reality without the community’s support. The town of New Whiteland and its residents have come together to give of their money and time to honor our veterans.

As you are driving down Tracy Road, be sure to notice the efforts put forth to honor the supreme sacrifices made by our Hoosier Heroes.

After the dedication of the Vietnam Memorial, many reached out to thank Alspach for her work in making the memorials happen, including members of the local members of the Rolling Thunder motorcycle club, an organization that supports accountability for the Prisoners Of War-Missing In Action of all wars (rollingthunder1.com).

The following three diets all proclaim they are not fad diets but life-long eating plans.

We wanted to see how typical Greenwood residents could incorporate these plans while managing their busy lives.

Kellie is 47, mother of four and works outside the home. She has hypothyroidism, which makes her metabolism slow, hence making her weight hard to manage. She wanted to take more control of her health so she recruited a personal trainer and started on the Paleo diet.

PALEO DIET

Paleo comes from the Paleolithic period based on what cavemen ate. It claims it is the ultimate clean eating diet. It focuses on organic produce, primarily vegetables with some fruit, nuts, fish, poultry and grass fed beef. No grains or legumes. Dairy is excluded or very restricted. Just think about what you can hunt and gather. Let me know if you find a Mammoth! There are variant

MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet is based on food and recipes typically cooked in the Mediterranean region. Butter is replaced by olive oil. Red meat is eaten sparingly. Fish, seafood and poultry are consumed at least twice a week. It also focuses on vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts and legumes. Also if desire, a daily glass of red wine. The Mayo Clinic endorses it as a heart healthy diet; studies have shown a reduction in heart disease, cancer; Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

“Focusing on the Mediterranean diet made me more intentional about including veggies in my diet and restricting sugar, meat [besides fish], butter and white flour. These are all things that are fairly forefront in my mind when cooking for my family, but I had to work a little harder than usual. Will I continue? Probably not. I firmly believe that weight loss is about calories in and calories out. Heart health is something different. I could eat 1300 calories of butter and beef and lose weight, but my heart wouldn’t be healthy. You have to find a healthy balance that works for you. For me it means ... more real food, less processed foods. Pairing those family favorites [like homemade mac and cheese] with a big serving of steamed broccoli, eating at home instead of eating out and more calories out than in. Now if I could just kick this nasty Diet Coke habit!”

5/2 PLAN

The 5/2 plan is fasting diet with two modified fasting days of 600 calories for men (500 for women), not recommended on consecutive and five days of normal caloric intake. Dr. Michael Mosley popularized this in the UK in the BBC Horizon program “Eat, Fast and Live Longer.” There is no specific food plan, just calorie counting. Fasting lowers the hormone IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor 1). IGF-1 suppression promotes tissue and DNA repair, boosts immune system and is linked to longevity. Fasting is controversial and needs further research on potential harmful effects.

Don is 42, has three children and is a very busy teacher. When school is in session, his exercise and diet tends to be sent to the corner. He accepted the 5/2 plan because it was simple and associated with lower heart disease, cancer and slowing the aging

“In a phrase ... I hated it! I often like to snack throughout the day – BAD HABIT. Limiting myself to 600 calories on Monday and Wednesday made me dread those days.

I munched on salads and celery and pushed water. I would often get headaches, was irritable and lethargic. Worst of all, I’m sure I overate on Tuesdays and Thursdays because my body was craving food so bad. Interestedly, I still had some positive results in weight loss but not enough to make me want to continue with the program. However, it has made me more conscious of healthier fresh food choices.”

CONQUER THE SEASON

So overall, this experiment was successful and insightful. The ‘diet-teers learned

food planning, preparation and less eating out were crucial in their success. Some discovered new dishes they enjoyed.

Whether they continue or not, they have become more mindful of incorporating healthier food into their lives.

So this holiday season, let the goose be the one to get fat! Get a battle plan now to avoid becoming one of the five-pound holiday weight gain statistics.

“Open to anyone, no charge, no strings attached.” These are the words Greenwood Christian Church uses to describe their weekly community meal. This free meal, offered in the café area of the church every Monday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., is for any person in need of a meal, regardless of age or socio-economic status.

Located at 2045 Averitt Road in Greenwood, this weekly meal served 40 meals when it began in June 2013. It has grown significantly and currently serves approximately 160 meals on an average Monday evening. Meals are also available to go.

GCC’s community meal is part of a larger community-wide effort that aims to provide a warm meal to Johnson County residents every day of the week. Multiple local churches have teamed together to meet this need. The churches share menus to assure they serve a different meal each day. Participating churches have created a master community meal calendar that gives menu and location information for where a free meal can be found in Johnson County on any given weekday.

WE CAN DO MORE TOGETHER! Kent Patterson, Minister of Outreach for Greenwood Christian Church, describes the genesis of this program: “We (GCC) were looking for opportunities to connect with the community, and we knew there was a need for meals in this area. We just didn’t know the best way to do it. We try to do a lot of cooperative work with other

ministries and agencies because we know we can do more together than we can on our own. We visited a few places, talked with people doing this type of outreach, and learned it was definitely possible for us to help serve our community in this way, too.”

Patterson shares that, in the beginning, the church wondered if they would consistently have the steady stream of volunteers necessary to make the meal happen each week. In reality, since the meal’s beginning, there has never been a volunteer shortage.

“This is something people like to be a part of. Generally, 10-15 people come and help on Mondays, and we’re usually booked a couple months ahead in terms of volunteers,” says Patterson. Volunteer tasks include helping to prepare and serve the meal, washing dishes, or meal clean-up.

While the meal’s volunteer pool includes many Greenwood Christian Church members, many non-GCC individuals serve, too. This includes individuals from the community and other local churches.

Local Boy and Girl Scouts have volunteered their time, as well. Any person or group, young or old, interested in helping is welcome. Patterson says this approach fits into the church’s larger purpose for providing the meal: “This isn’t just ours (GCC) to do. It’s a way we can help others spread Jesus’ love. We don’t desire to make it something that is just ours.” Those interested in volunteering can call the church office at 317-881-9336, extension 361.

chef Vicki Stafford in the kitchen at GCC each Monday afternoon by 3 p.m., hours before they serve the first meal. Sometimes without the help of another, but always with a joyful heart, Stafford begins the process of preparing a meal that will feed, on average, 160 people. Long before Monday, however, she plans behind the scenes, deciding on menus and buying meal ingredients.

While most would consider this task overwhelming, Stafford sees it differently.

“It’s kind of hard because most people work during the day. I am lucky that I am retired and I get to do this!” shares Vicki, who also says that when it comes to serving in this way each week, she’s been “led on this path

by God.” Stafford has volunteered her time since that very first Monday night a year ago when the program began.

Currently, there is no meal scheduled on the Johnson County Community Meal Calendar for Wednesdays. Any church interested in hosting a meal on Wednesdays can contact Greenwood Christian Church at 317-881-9336 for more information.

Patterson shares this final thought: “There isn’t any way we could feed people every night of the week. We just don’t have the budget to make that happen. But, if we all do a little bit, then we can help a lot more people.”

O

n the weekend of October 11, the USA Power Soccer team held its Team USA Selection Camp at the Community Life Center. Twenty athletes from across the United States were rigorously tested.

Even though all gave a valiant effort, only 12 made it on to the team to compete in the World Cup. Power Soccer is something that most people are not familiar with. It is the first competitive team sport designed and developed specifically for people of all ages and genders who use a power

wheelchair. Participants include people with quadriplegia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, head trauma, stroke, spinal cord injury and other physical challenges. Power Soccer is the fastest growing sport for power wheelchair users. It combines the skill of the person with the speed and power of the chair to create a fun, competitive and accessible opportunity to play the most popular sport in the world. Power Soccer was originally developed in France in the early 1970s and was introduced to the United States in the early 1980s.

Since then, many countries have created their own version of the sport, which led to an international meeting in 2005. The six countries that attended created an international organization and unified the rules for global competition.

In 2006, the United States Power Soccer Association was formed. Team USA won their first World Cup in 2007 in Tokyo and again in 2011 in Paris. The site of the 2015 World Cup Tournament has yet to be determined, but it will be the largest gathering of Power Soccer athletes ever with

teams representing 15 countries. Out of all the places nationally, Team USA is based right here in Central Indiana, coached by Johnson County resident Mike Hayes.

Hayes locally coaches the five-time national championship winning team, the Circle City Rollers. Nationally Hayes has helped with the Team USA at training camps, the World Cups in 2007 and 2011 and now is the head coach for the 2015 team. “I started when I was at a softball game for my sister. Some lady stopped me and asked me if I have ever heard of Power Soccer and invited me to their team’s practice,” said Archer. “From there I fell in love and have been participating in the sport for 10 years.”

Archer is a 24-year-old college graduate from Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical technology. He was born with Arthrogryposis and has been using a wheelchair since the age of 12. Arthrogryposis is a congenital joint contracture in two or more areas of the body. Children born with one or more joint contractures have abnormal fibrosis of the muscle tissue causing muscle shortening.

Therefore they are unable to do passive extension and flexion in the affected joint or joints mainly involves the hands and feet.

Although Archer has daily challenges, he never gives up.

In 1915, 112 W. Jefferson St. in downtown Franklin was an automobile dealership; many businesses occupied the building in the years after until it fell into complete disrepair. In 2012, Franklin resident Cori Brown wanted to start a business. She did and not only succeeded in bringing life to a new business but also brought new life to a historic building.

“Restoring the building was no simple task,” she says.

Reconstruction included raising the southwest corner of the building four inches. The original pressed metal ceiling was uncovered, wooden beams from a local 1800s era barn were used on the interior and the entire front facade was re-bricked.

At 9 a.m. on Tanksgiving morning before helping themselves to their Tanksgiving meal, 18,000 Hoosiers and their families will serve others frst by participating in the 12th annual Drumstick Dash.

When Chief Development Ofcer Steve Kerr proposed the idea over 12 years ago to hold a race on Tanksgiving Day, he had no idea it would grow to be so popular. Tis race, benefting Wheeler Mission, has grown into one of the top 10 events in the U.S. for Tanksgiving Day running events.

CIRCLE OF LIGHTS® A DOWNTOWN TRADITION

Magic and excitement will again permeate the air around Monument Circle, during one of Central Indiana’s most treasured holiday traditions, the Circle of Lights.

Presented by Quality Connection and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) #481, the 52nd Circle of Lights will kick of the holiday season, starting at 6 p.m. Friday, November 28, with a free family-oriented celebration.

From the Friday evening afer Tanksgiving until early January, millions of spectators will take in the brilliant displays around Monument Circle.

In the middle stands the centerpiece, a 284 foot Christmas tree, standing lit as a symbol of peace and brotherhood. Every year I have stood in awe of that, and I have prayed a prayer of thanks for the teams of individuals who have contributed their time to give such joy. I’d like to tell you what just a small percentage of individuals have done behind the scenes for the Circle of Lights.

Decorations on the Monument have been a holiday tradition since 1945. World War II

had just ended, and Christmas was nearing.

Indianapolis architect Edward D. Pierre envisioned the Monument lit up in lights and decorations, standing as a symbol of peace and brotherhood. For the next 17 years, Christmas trees, giant candles and small toy maker shops brightened the Circle’s base, while elegant banners with phrases such as “Peace on Earth Good Will, Toward Men” clung to the Monument’s botom section.

It wasn’t until 1962 Pierre’s vision of lights strung from the top of the Monument to its base became a reality. As I have mentioned, many people and organizations have played a role in designing, fabricating, installing and implementing the celebration décor.

Initially, a group called the Indianapolis Christmas Commitee, or the Indianapolis Holidays Commitee, started the mission of what today is called the Circle of Lights.

Tis mission today is the responsibility of Downtown Indy, Inc. Te union electricians of IBEW #481 have always been the organization to install and remove the décor. Two hundred of these volunteer electricians utilize more than six miles of electrical wire, 52 garland strands and 4,784 lights to produce Indiana’s

holiday centerpiece.

In a chat with Julia Saltsgaver, Quality Connection Executive Director, she told me the electricians work one strand at a time hoisting up the most northern strand frst.

Ten the most southern strand goes next.

Te project continues with this north-tosouth rotation going in a counter-clockwise direction until completed. By handling the strands in this manner, great care is taken to protect the structure and integrity of the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in the transformation process.

“Te contractors of Quality Connection and the IBEW #481 electrical workers are thrilled to provide their talent and skill to make sure that the Circle of Lights brings holiday joy for everyone,” Saltsgaver said.

Te free celebration festivities start at 6 p.m. with the televised portion of the program running from 7-8 p.m. Te Monument lightup will occur at approximately 7:50 p.m.

Te celebration incorporates local acts from dancers to choral groups, to singers and musicians, all of whom were selected back in early October from a panel of judges in a format similar to the American Idol auditions.

For the third year in a row, the nine member band from Mount Pleasant Christian Church, led by Brian Tabor, has been selected as the house band. Based out of Greenwood, the group will rock the night away with Christmas tunes in a variety of styles, including R&B, pop and classic rock.

“Yes,” she said, smiling. “We are also excited to have Indy’s own Josh Kaufman, 2014 winner of Te Voice, to headline the Circle of Lights. Additionally, professional performers appearing at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s IPL Yuletide Celebration will take the stage. It’s going to be a spectacular show!”

“We are honored to serve as the house band for Circle of Lights again this year.

Our team is hard at work, preparing music that will help us ring in the season of Christmas,” said Tabor. “We are thrilled to be a part of such a special event in the life of our city. It has become one of the highlights of our year. If you have never been to the Circle of Lights, I encourage you to check it out. It is an unbelievable experience.”

Nearing 7:50 p.m., the spectator’s anticipation builds. “What’s that sound?” a litle boy screams from the crowd.

Siting down with Jennifer Hanson, Downtown Indy Senior Communication Director, I asked if the rumors were true.

“Ho, ho, ho!”

It’s the jolly man himself! Santa!

And as the child, Santa and the Mayor fip the switch, I’m sure I’ll hear Santa saying, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

“Doing something that’s never been done before and geting people to understand and wrap their minds around it [was a challenge],” Springer said. “For example, it was difcult to fnd a manufacturer for the dispenser or cups, so we decided to just do it ourselves.”

Botoms Up dispensers have found residence in 49 states (except stubborn Rhode Island), Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Scandinavia, Germany, Norway and soon the UK. Growth is in the future for GrinOn Industries, according to Springer. Tey are also working on producing reusable glassware and pitchers for their systems and expanding their home units (yes, you can have a system in your basement!) and commercial sales. Tey are currently in a fundraising stage and looking for accredited investors.

Greenwood’s A.J. Edds Makes it in New York Writer / Kevin Conrad

Former Greenwood Community High School PrepStar AllAmerican A.J. Edds has overcome many setbacks to maintain his professional football career in the National Football League. The 2006 Greenwood graduate has amassed a four-year football career despite not one but two season-ending knee injuries since 2009.

The New York Jets signed the 27-year-old linebacker and special teams player this May after he spent a combined three seasons with the Dolphins, Patriots and Colts.“I feel like I’ve found a home with the Jets,” said A.J. “I fit in really well with their [defensive] scheme. I can do what they ask of me within the defense. I’m in a really good place and with a fun team to be a part of.”

A.J. had been without a team since the summer of 2012 when he was released by the Colts. Indianapolis cut him loose after he suffered a second ACL knee injury. This time it was his left knee.

He had the same injury to his right knee his rookie year in 2010 while with the Dolphins.

“This is my fourth year in the league, and the average NFL career is three and half years,” said A.J. “The average career of a guy with an ACL is less than that. The average career of a guy with two ACL injuries is virtually nonexistent. To have two ACLs in three

years and be able to bounce back and continue to play and put my best foot forward is something I’m very proud of.” A.J. says it’s a question of resiliency at this point.

“Many people would have folded it up after the second ACL injury and moved on. I knew in my heart I hadn’t had a chance to put my best foot forward yet in the NFL.” “I made a goal of what I wanted to accomplish. I wasn’t going to let a few setbacks diminish that goal or hold me back. You keep working and keep pushing forward. You find out a lot about yourself when you have setbacks. I wanted to prove to myself that I had what it took to make the team and play at this level.”

A.J. sets three goals for himself before each training camp.

“Number one goal is stay healthy, something I took for granted in college,” he said. “My second goal is to make the team. Third goal is help my team make the playoffs.”

So where does A.J. get his great work ethic, resiliency, discipline and resolve? He credits his parents, high school and college coaches, teammates and the community of Greenwood.

“Looking back on how I was reared, the farther away from it I get, the more I appreciate it,” said A.J. “The little things that my parents did for me and the sacrifices and commitments they made makes me appreciate them and the way they raised me. They are my two biggest role models.”

A.J.’s father, David Edds, former Greenwood Community Schools Superintendent, was A.J.’s youth football coach for many years.

David said A.J. began playing football at a very young age.

“I saw him do things on the practice field in second grade that were instinctive that you just don’t coach,” said David. “I remember going home one night after practice when I told his mother that this kid is going to be a college football player and we’re going to start preparing him right now.”

David then talked to A.J. about what he needed to do for a future in football.

“First, I talked with him making it clear that academics was number one,” he said. “Number two, when a coach asks or tells him to do something, you keep your mouth shut and do it because that coach knows more about what the team needs than he does. Be a student of the game. Pay attention to what other people are doing. Do your job but know how it fits in with the entire system that’s being employed.”

In high school, A.J. was a four-year letterman in football, basketball and track. His stats are impressive. He holds numerous school records in football with 390 career tackles, 12 career interceptions, 23 tackles in one game, 17 solo tackles in a game and 73 solo tackles for a season. He also has the school mark in basketball for the most rebounds in a career. He placed seventh in the high hurdles in the 2006 State Track & Field Championships.

A.J. said his high school football coach Rick Wimmer, basketball coach Bruce Hensley and track coach Tad Frahm were tremendous influences on him.

“I learned a lot of life lessons from them,” he said. “Those guys really pushed me athletically and held me to a higher standard because they knew I had gifts and talents.”

“I hope we pushed him hard,” said Rick. “He had a lot of talent and great family support. I give his parents a lot credit for providing for him the training, the opportunities to travel and go places to get seen which is important in the recruiting process.”

Bruce, longtime Greenwood basketball coach, recalled a special story about A.J. “This is what epitomizes A.J. His senior year in the regional football game, he broke his foot,” said Bruce. “He’s already committed to Iowa to play football. He doesn’t have to play basketball. However, he still played basketball after missing the first three or four games

due to the broken foot. That spoke volumes to me, the kind of person that he was and kind of teammate he was and the kind of friend he was. I will always remember that about him.”

A TRUE STUDENT ATHLETE

A.J. not only excelled in athletics, he also was a top-notch student.

In high school, he was named National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete for Central Indiana and earned academic all-state his senior year.

“A.J. was probably the most recruited player I ever had,” recalls Rick. “Not just because of his athletic ability, but also because he was a very good student and a very mature young man. When college coaches met him, they were very impressed with him.”

A.J. says his mindset during the recruiting process was where can I get a meaningful degree while playing for a high caliber football team? First advice I would give to any young athlete contemplating playing sports at the next level is get your grades in line. That’s first and foremost. Before a coach comes to see a kid, they have the transcripts sent to them. Can this kid get into school?”

After numerous college visits, A.J. chose the University of Iowa.

The Hawkeyes recruited him as a tight end but moved him to linebacker during preseason practice his freshman year.

“Going to the University of Iowa was probably the best decision in my short 27 years of life,” he said. “Top to bottom I have nothing but respect for the University of Iowa coaching staff.”

He started 38 straight games for the Hawkeyes at linebacker from his sophomore season through his senior year. He ranks 43rd in career tackles at Iowa with 226 and was named academic All-Big Ten his sophomore, junior and senior years. He graduated with a degree in management.

A.J. credits the community of Greenwood with helping shape him into the kind of person he is today. “Greenwood is a place filled with a lot hard working people that go to work before the sun is up and work until the sun is going down,” said A.J. “What I’m doing athletically is no different from what many people are doing in their work careers back home. I do enjoy getting back to Greenwood because it reminds me of where I come from and what I’m all about.”

CG GRAD GETS TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER

Sometimes you have to look hard to find something good happening in a bad situation. Every day in the newspaper, on the Internet and every night on the TV news, there’s another story about fighting in the Middle East and the millions of people – mostly children – forced to flee from their homes.

Many children all over the world suffer from birth defects. Congenital heart defects are the most common. The lucky ones in the developed countries of the world have access to surgery, medications and the care they need. Children in less-developed areas of the world served by humanitarian organizations and charities have a chance at receiving the care they need – sometimes having to be transported out of their home country. Still, others trapped in war-torn areas of the world through no fault of their own must rely on the hope that someone will come to them. That’s where the Preemptive Love Coalition comes in.

Started in 2008, Preemptive Love Coalition strives to provide lifesaving heart surgeries to Iraqi children by training local doctors, nurses and support staff in Iraq. The Iraqi government funds 85 percent of the program, with the additional 15 percent coming from donors around the world.

According to Preemptive Love’s website (preemptivelove.org), Iraq’s hospitals and medical facilities were once the envy of the Middle East. But after decades of war and unrest, chemical weapons, collateral damage and international sanctions, Iraqi children are 10 times more likely to be born with a heart defect than the world average. Nevertheless, in the midst of all that misery, something good is happening.

In addition, there’s a local kid in the mix.

AN INTERN IN KURDISTAN

Nate Miller, 20, is a 2012 Center Grove High School graduate and a junior at Anderson University. He worked as an intern with Preemptive Love Coalition from May 25 – July 25, 2014, in the northern Kurdish region of Iraq. As a finance major, Miller was one of five interns who worked behind the scenes.

The organization prides itself on its financial transparency.

“I analyzed financial reports and noted trends or patterns in giving,” Miller said.

“I helped them develop ways to keep current donors and reach out to future donors.”

While Kurdistan is generally one of the more stable regions of Iraq, there were still precautionary measures in place to maintain interns’ safety.

“We didn’t have bodyguards,” Miller said. “But we were told to not walk in big groups or go out alone.”

Working with Preemptive Love Coalition was just a natural progression for Miller.

His older sister, Alexandra, was born with a congenital heart defect and underwent multiple surgeries at Riley Children’s Hospital and IU Health until she was 16.

Now 22, Alexandra is healthy and works for the University of Michigan.

Barbara Augsdorfer is a graduate of California Lutheran University with more than 20 years of writing and editing experience in the publishing industry. She lives in Indianapolis with her husband Mike, son Robert and a spoiled black lab/rottweiler named Lucky.

As for traveling to Iraq, Miller told the Daily Journal last winter, “It definitely crossed my mind that it could be somewhat dangerous because it’s in that part of the world, but it wasn’t a factor that would have kept me from going.”

“The idea of going someplace different, somewhere very unfamiliar, is something we hope we could instill in all our children,” Nate’s mother, Ellen, told the Daily Journal. “That’s a good thing; not a scary thing.”

FRIENDS PROVIDE SUPPORT

Once accepted for the internship, which involved an online application, an essay and an interview, Miller had to raise $4,500 to cover his airfare and living expenses.

“We had people who had supported our Honduras trip. When I told them where I was going and what I was planning to do, a lot of them offered financial support,” Miller said.

Still, others thought Miller was joking when he said he was going to spend most of his summer break in Iraq. Their astonishment was a natural opening for Miller to explain his reason, passion and mission.

Most people don’t walk into their office at 6 a.m. to start their workday. Yet Greenwood Middle School (GMS) Principal Chris Sutton does just that – Monday through Friday, when the community’s 900 students are in school. That time of quiet before students and staff arrive helps him prepare for the day. Assisting with breakfast duty at 7:30 a.m. and broadcasting the morning announcements keep Sutton busy until after 8 a.m.

As the morning progresses, the rhythm quickens with Sutton attending meetings, answering phone calls and typically helping in the cafeteria for a couple of hours. The latter is one of his favorite moments.

“Being at lunch is one way I get to know the kids. I can see them in a relaxed atmosphere and talk individually with them,” said Sutton.

Student relationships are important to Sutton, but he didn’t initially plan a career in education. After taking a couple of introductory business classes his freshman year at Indiana University, he decided to drop business and pursue education.

“Teaching was always in the back of my mind,” said Sutton.

Growing up in Greenwood, Sutton had many great teachers who

influenced him. When he was a sophomore in 1984, Carolyn Hayes, a Center Grove High School teacher, created an exciting classroom experience for learning biology.

“She was smart, she made learning fun and you could tell she loved teaching,” said Sutton.

His freshman English teacher, Karen Wilkerson, made a significant difference in his communication skills.

“She could tear apart my papers, red ink and all, in the gentlest way.

I became a better writer after having her class,” Sutton said.

Sutton’s love for social studies began in Mike Bodine’s sixth grade class where he, too, “made it fun.”

LEARNING THE ROLE

In 1993, Sutton was Joe DiPietro’s first hire as principal and began teaching seventh grade social studies fall semester. After receiving his master’s degree in school administration in 2000, Sutton became GMS’s assistant principal two years later. He enjoyed working with Principal Vicki Noblitt.

“By far my biggest administrative mentor," he said. "She gave me just enough work to learn the job and supported me when I needed it. And she made coming to work fun!”

When Noblitt replaced Helen Crawford as Greenwood Community Schools’ Curriculum Director in January 2014, Sutton was her logical replacement. As he explained how being principal is quite different, Sutton smiled and said, “There’s a lot more communication with a lot more people. Now the buck stops here.

However, I’ve always had comfort in the decisions I’ve made. I know that if it’s what’s best for the kids, I can sleep well at night.”

But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t had great challenges as GMS’s principal.

“Motivating the kids to do their best, dealing with what we need to do within budgetary restraints and giving the kids what they need emotionally, socially and academically, is our goal,” Sutton said.

But Sutton is quick to say the satisfactions outweigh those challenges. He enjoys trying to make the kids and staff happy as well as living in the community where he can interact with students even after they’ve been gone to high school.

“I get huge satisfaction in seeing a struggling sixth grader grow into an eighth grader who is mature and ready for high school,” he said.

EMBRACING THE ROLE

However, Sutton is quick to mention that most days are routine and many are extremely fun.

“Each year one of my best days as principal comes during our annual canned food drive convocation before winter break,” said Sutton. “We announce the totals and highlight the good they’ve done for the community.”

Sutton explained that GMS is the local Salvation Army’s greatest contributor.

His passion for providing service learning for GMS students and staff extends past the food drive. They also contribute to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health by participating in “Hats On for Riley.” Students and staff pay one dollar to wear a hat for the day.

During the winter convocation, Chris asks students to stand up if they have a personal connection to the children’s hospital. He’s always surprised by how many are standing.

A typical afternoon in the GMS principal’s day starts with more announcements, more paperwork and meetings dealing with the budget, teachers and parents. Sutton also attends monthly principals’ meetings at the school corporation’s central office, led by second-year superintendent Kent DeKoninck. He notes communication is vital in his job and requires much of his time.

During spring semester 2013, GMS assisted another charity, “Indy’s Honor Flight,” a program that helps fund veterans’ flights to Washington, D.C., so they can visit the war memorials.

Students also wrote the four GMS-sponsored veterans’ letters of appreciation. Sutton also mentioned an upcoming project titled H-2: Humility and Humanity spearheaded by a parent.

When asked to remember a difficult day as principal, Sutton said, “A tough day is when there are things beyond our control to fix in

DEVELOPING THE VISION

Sutton advises first-year teachers to “be patient with the kids, get to know them and let them know you care.” He wants those teachers to “make those connections and love what they do.”

Sutton achieves those connections by being present during the school day and attending extra-curricular events. And his daughter – seventh grader Ella – keeps him in touch with what’s going on in a middle school student’s daily life. His son, Harrison, is now a sophomore, and Sutton smiles as he notes that he and his wife, Anna, are now saturated by the daily concerns of teenagers.

His long-term goals for GMS would include leading the county in ISTEP scores and service learning opportunities.

“If I woke up and saw in the newspaper that our ISTEP scores were top in the county and that our school was a model for service learning, it wouldn’t get much better than that,” Sutton said.

GMS’s short-term goals feature improving math and language arts scores, increasing parent and community communication and developing a more effective approach to discipline.

There isn’t much Sutton would change about his job.

“The amount of emails I get daily— anywhere from 80 to 100, all needing my personal attention,” said Sutton. “But I wouldn’t change a lot. I’m happy to be one of those guys who loves his job. If my compass is always what’s best for the kids, then everything else falls into place.”

Joyce Long has called Center Grove home since 1987. Each year Greenwood-A-Glow celebrates the holiday season. The event begins at the Greenwood Public Library with crafts, shows, food and Santa Claus. Then at 5 p.m., the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at the new Greenwood City Center will take place.

Join Santa Claus and community leaders as we celebrate the holiday season. The tree lighting will occur at the City Center.

Enjoy some entertainment from local choirs including the Isom Elementary Honors Choir. After the tree lighting follow Santa to the Greenwood Public Library for more fun activities.

Relax and enjoy one of the many coloring packets available for children, plus make a memorable FREE craft to take home and remember the 2014 Greenwood-A-Glow. The coloring and craft areas are located in the Children’s Department on the first floor.

Hungry? Need a snack? The Kiwanis Club of Greenwood will be serving food, drinks and treats for a minimal charge. The food counter will be located on the first floor of the library under the stairs.

Come see a holiday puppet show performed by Peewinkle’s Puppet Studio. Peggy Melchior presents a captivating creative holiday puppet show for children of all ages and adults. Tickets are $2 per person and the shows take place at the library’s community room C.

Enjoy a short stroll around the library’s winter wonderland.

Carriage rides are available for all ages for a $2 donation per person to OTGA. Tickets can be purchased inside the Library Foyer.

A discussion regarding paying kids for their grades recently took place at brunch with my husband and mother-in-law. Before disagreeing with me as you read this about whether this is a good idea, read on to get the full picture.

My husband brought up the idea of penalizing by taking away earnings for A’s and B’s if one of the boys earns a lesser letter grade. This in turn could reduce the amount of money earned, and possibly down to zero depending on the structure.

My mother-in-law was not going for this because her point was that they aren’t rewarded for average to below-average performance.

This made me realize that there already is a penalty built into her reward schedule.

As I sat there and thought more about this, it occurred to me.

Our kids already receive a penalty, but what about an extra incentive? In addition, there it was, the idea of a bonus system for doing really well in their courses. We are still working out the finer points, as the grading systems are slightly different.

Middle school students have the nine week grading periods weighted equally each semester toward the semester grades.

On the other hand, the high school has the nine week grading periods weighted at 40 percent each with a semester exam at 20 percent to determine the semester grade. The challenge is to come up with a system that makes sense, especially at the high school level.

I like the idea of an incentive, but we need to determine the fine print, so to speak. Do we base it on semester grades or a combination of semester exam and final semester grade? Do we weigh toward the final semester grade? The semester exam can affect a high school student since the semester grades determine their grade point average.

All of this reinforces what I have said to my boys all along.

School is their job. It can be similar to those of us in the working world. We receive regular income for doing our jobs, but we may also receive bonuses that can be based on a variety of factors.
