Michael Clark co-founded BAMWX in 2011. Today, the weather service employs six people.

RAINING SUCCESS GREENWOOD-BASED FORECASTER TURNS HOBBY INTO MILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS

What started as a hobby and passion six years ago has now turned into a million dollar business in Greenwood.

Clark quit his job and finished his degree before starting the business. BAMWX provides weather forecasts to businesses such as the Cincinnati Reds, the I-69 development project, St. Francis hospitals and the 500 Festival Committee. Clients are also located in several other states, such as Arizona and North Carolina.

BAMWX was co-founded in May 2011 and now employs six people. Co-founder and chief meteorologist Michael Clark says forecasting started as a hobby and something that he did for fun.

A typical week at BAMWX is Monday through Friday from 4:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., where the team gets the forecasts to their clients as early as possible.

“We were putting out weather forecasts on social media and they were pretty good, they were pretty accurate, and we had people who would suggest that maybe we start charging, kind of start our own private service,” Clark says. “It’s something I’ve always loved so I thought well, what the heck. Everything we’ve ever done has been something that has been suggested by another customer or client. We just do everything that people want us to do. It’s really more of a passion. We enjoy this and turned it into a business.”

“If you’ve got guys who are construction companies, whatever the case may be, they need that forecast information early so they can make decisions on how to go about their day,” Clark says. “Our job is to get in early, look at the computer models, look at satellite, look at everything we can to come up with the best picture of what we see going on and get our product out. We essentially provide them with weather information to make sure they can make sound decisions.

It’s a lot of data analysis and a lot of thinking outside the box,” he adds. “Weather is not something you can just get out of a textbook and tell people about it — there’s a lot of just outside the box thinking that’s required in order to do well with it.”

The BAMWX team studies data and trends to provide the most accurate weather forecasts.

Clark says weather is different and challenging every day, but he enjoys the challenge because he doesn’t want things to be the exact same every day. If a severe weather event or snowstorm occurs, the BAMWX team can work up to 20 hour days until the storm comes and passes. “I love watching predictions and things come to fruition,” Clark says. “A lot of people over the years will tell you that you can’t predict the weather and you can be wrong half the time and still have a job. A lot of that’s not true because if I was wrong half the time I wouldn’t have a business. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. There’s actually a system and a science to it.” In addition to weather forecasting, Clark and his team do agriculture and energy forecasting for businesses and farmers, too. Weather can determine what kind of seed farmers purchase, what crop they grow and how they treat their crop. Turning on a water irrigation system can cost thousands of dollars, but by consulting with BAMWX, they can tell the farmer if a storm or other weather event is coming. “A simple span of five days at 100 degrees can completely ruin a corn crop,” Clark says. “If you have major drought situations, then you obviously will have a problem with the vegetation and the crop. So, long term seasonal forecasting is something that is crucial for farmers and for the agricultural world. We provide that for them, we provide them what they need to make those decisions.” Energy-demand forecasting can also have a major financial impact. In Dallas, Texas, a five degree temperature difference from 90 to 95 degrees can cost $23 million in one 24 hour period. The forecast helps energy companies and commodity groups gauge what stocks for items such as natural gas will do and what the cooling demand will be. atGreenwood.com / MAY 2017 / GREENWOOD COMMUNITY MAGAZINE / 5

“IT’S SOMETHING I’VE ALWAYS LOVED SO I THOUGHT WELL, WHAT THE HECK.” “Weather is an economy driver,” Clark says. “If you stop and think for a minute, weather is a factor in everything that you do every day. So, we simply try to provide information on what that weather’s going to be doing so everyone can do what they want to do. We are able to provide attention to detail that free services cannot and will not provide. The time and effort and analysis that is put into our stuff, you just can’t compete with it. A news station has to get their forecasts out in three minutes. We have seven hours. We have the ability to put more outside the box thinking towards it, more experience toward it and more time and effort into the product.”

THE SECRET BEHIND FLOORTECH LOCAL FLOORING STORE DOUBLES AS BASEBALL AND SOCCER TRAINING FACILITY

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Several years ago, Jeremy Swinford was training Jeff Montfort’s daughter in soccer when the two men got to talking and learned they had a shared passion for sports and flooring. Montfort is the owner of Floortech, a family owned and operated business for the past 32 years ( Jeff has been running it for 12). Montfort also trains elite athletes — his specialty is baseball.

Montfort runs one side of the training facility — Lefty’s Bullpen — where he works with clients on fielding, hitting and pitching. He teaches students how to manage their bodies and abilities through the proper mechanics.

For 12 years, Swinford worked with athletes on speed and agility work for all sports, but at Footworx, the other half of the training facility, he has narrowed his focus to soccer.

“When kids are learning the game of soccer, they often get rushed through the “I like helping kids mature and develop, fundamentals and don’t learn what they not just in sports but in life,” says need to on the front end from a movement, Montfort, who was an exceptional baseball passing and field positioning standpoint,” player at Perry Meridian High School. says Swinford, who trouble shoots athletes’ weak spots and runs repetitive drills to He went on to play at the University inspire improvement. “My niche is that I supplement the technical help that coaches With a background in sales and a combined of Indianapolis, then was drafted into the White Sox organization following don’t have time to offer up when they have love of sports, Swinford and Montfort college. earned a degree in fitness and sports studies. Swinford and Montfort, who train about 15 to 20 athletes a week, share similar visions when it comes to life goals. “It goes, ‘God, family, work, sports,’” Montfort says. Swinford agrees. With a wife and two toddlers at home, he wanted to pursue a career in which he could preserve precious family time. “I’ve always dreamed of walking out the back door of my flooring store and into my training facility,” Montfort says. “Now, it’s actually happening. Jeremy and I are still in awe of how it’s all come together.” In the future, the men plan to hire additional trainers in order to expand their clientele.

“We’ll never water down the training to filter kids through more quickly because we’re not doing this for the money,” Swinford says. “We’re doing it because we love to see our clients grow.” And that’s exactly what happens. According to one client, Lindsey Ciampa, after just a few months of training at Footworx, she’s already seen dramatic improvement in her play. “I’ve learned new foot skills and how to control the ball, all while having an amazing time,” Ciampa says. Swinford, a handyman at heart, says that his dual career fulfills his desire to impact lives. “If you’ve ever seen someone who has gotten a new floor, they’re pretty excited,” Swinford says. “And when training kids, it’s all about building trust and pushing them to be the best they can be.”

Lexi Fraser, 12, one of Swinford’s clients, notes that her trainer is good at breaking things down in an understandable way. “Sometimes coaches can be intimidating, but Jeremy makes me feel comfortable,” Fraser says. “He motivates me to work hard but doesn’t pressure me, allowing me to focus on my training.” Currently rehabbing from ACL surgery, Fraser says Swinford has helped re-build her confidence by getting back to the basics and following a customized plan designed to meet her goals. Adds Fraser’s mom, Linsey, “He truly is awesome and so much more than a trainer to our family.” Check out Floortech/Footworx/Lefty’s Bullpen’s new Greenwood location at 3115 Meridian Parke Dr., Suite H. RAYS AWARENESS

OUTRUN THE SUN CO-FOUNDER TALKS SUN SAFETY AND MELANOMA AWARENESS

Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography / Brian Brosmer

After the last remnants of winter and early spring chill have seemed to vanish for good, it’s tempting to dash out the front door and bask in as much of the sun’s warmth as possible. Understandable, yes, but statistics show that plenty of precautions should be taken to avoid the potentially serious health consequences a few seemingly harmless rays can cause. May is National Skin Cancer and Melanoma Awareness month, and according to Anita Day, co-founder and executive director of Outrun the Sun, an Indianapolis-based organization dedicated to promoting awareness, research and education of melanoma and other skin cancers, close to four million cases of skin

cancer are diagnosed each year in the U.S. – more than breast, colon, prostate and lung cancers combined.

protect yourself and reduce risk.

While there is ultimately no way to fully eliminate the chance of developing one of the three major types of skin cancer – basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma – that can result from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds, there are many ways to

Day says the advent of tanning beds has exacerbated the already widespread problem of melanoma and other skin cancers. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, individuals who use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk of melanoma by 75 percent.

“Here’s a really scary statistic – if you get one sunburn as a child, just one, it really increases your risk for developing melanoma later in “Skin cancer is the most prevalent cancer life,” Day says. “There’s really no such thing in America,” Day says. “While different as safe tanning. If you’re going to be at things types of skin cancer aren’t considered to be life-threatening like melanoma, it still like your kid’s baseball game in the bleachers requires some extensive surgery and they for three hours, it’s all about hats, sunglasses, can be life threatening if left undetected long sleeves and of course sunscreen. You and untreated. It’s a much bigger issue than have to be cognizant of how long you’ve been out and reapply sunscreen often.” people realize.”

INDY METRO / MAY 2017 / TownePost.com

“Tanning beds are a big problem, and the notion that getting a base tan will protect you from sunburn is a myth,” Day says. “You see a lot of students who are heading down to Florida for spring break and they head to the tanning booths beforehand to get that base tan, but it doesn’t protect you. Whether it comes from the sun or an indoor tanning bed or what have you, tan skin is damaged skin. And with the fact that everyone grows up thinking that you need to be tan to be attractive, it’s tough to go up against that when you’re trying to decrease the incidents of skin cancer.”

Outrun the Sun is now in its fourth year partnering with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), and this year at the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 29 guests can receive free sunscreen and UV wristbands that change color when exposed to light and also view public service announcements on the IMS video boards featuring Outrun the Sun spokesperson and Verizon IndyCar Series driver Josef Newgarden. “It’s been a far-reaching program, and we’re thrilled to work with IMS on the initiative,” Day says. “It’s such a big event with a lot of people out in the sun all weekend, so it’s great to have some presence and keep people informed and aware of protecting themselves.” Outrun the Sun will hold its 13th annual Race Against Melanoma at Fort Harrison State Park on June 17, consisting of a five-mile competitive run, a five-kilometer run/walk and a one-mile fun walk, beginning at 6 p.m. Proceeds benefit Outrun the Sun’s research and education programs. “Along with the race there’s a sunset festival and there will be music, food trucks, games and activities for all ages, and we encourage everyone to come out,” Day adds. Gun violence plagues every urban area across the country and clearly Indianapolis is not immune. Mayor Hogsett felt the need to be engaged in a deeper conversation of public safety during his race. violence and homicides in our city,” Hogsett says. He and the leadership of IMPD are taking a holistic approach to curbing this violence. After one of the most aggressive campaigns this state has experienced and given the dominance of social media, Mayor Joe’s ability to reach more of his constituents is unprecedented. His media team is intentional with making him more

accessible to his constituents. Their social media platforms help a great deal with this. Once he became Mayor, the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 approached. “Of course, the Indy 500 has always been an important part of our city’s history,” Hogsett says. “Last year was exceptional and special, to be mayor and celebrate the 100th running.” During 2016, Hogsett hosted the national Mayor’s Conference, with 250 mayors from all over the country in attendance, indicating, “Every single one of them said, ‘When are we going to the track?’” Hogsett is pleased that the public has responded to the historical significance of the Indy 500, feeling that with the new leadership at the IMS, and given the shake up during the 90s of the CART / IRL split, the city has witnessed a recovery. “Last year, the race was televised locally for the first time,” Hogsett says. “The Indy 500 is always a great opportunity for the city to show off its international flair. We have become more cosmopolitan. We are no longer a fly-over state for many reasons, and thanks to the Indy 500 draw, we are able to prove it.” During the 90s, under Eliz Kraft Taylor’s leadership at the 500 Festival, the Mini Marathon was rerouted to loop around the track instead of going up and down Meridian Street. "At that same time, we took the mini out of race weekend and moved it to the first Saturday in May,” Taylor says. “Race weekend always exhausts our police force, and the change in the mini was greatly appreciated by both the Police Chief and the Mayor.” “The Hudnut doctrine was ‘you can’t be a suburb of nothing’, which encouraged people to invest in

downtown so the suburbs, which at that time, were the outlier townships of Marion County,” Mayor Hogsett says. Continuing along the same path, The Hogsett Corollary is “you can’t be a downtown of nothing” to which Mayor Joe explains, “Hudnut was speaking to the townships. My meaning is that we have to continue to nurture our downtown and invest in the neighborhoods and surrounding contiguous areas.” Mayor Joe closes with a story: During the early 90s, while he was Secretary of State, he realized he had not registered for the Mini, and at that time it was run on a

Friday morning. Hogsett decided to run the race as a bandit. “Of course, I fully understood the rules,” says Hogsett with a smile. He jumped into the crowd of runners a little after the start, running among those who formally registered.

As Mayor Joe ran alongside Allison’s, a group of men on break outside in the yard began chanting, “USA, USA.” He ran through a residential area approaching downtown and an elderly woman, seated in her front yard, stood up and walked toward the sidewalk and yelled as he went by, “You’re THIRD!”

This was the first year that the route looped around the track and boomeranged back to downtown. As he approached the track entrance, he was stopped by volunteers wearing yellow and flagging him down, so Joe circumvented his route to 16th street. He was running alone, but this fact did not initially register with him.

“Then it dawned on me that I had accelerated my placement by not running the distance inside the Motor Speedway and realized I needed to avoid the cameras mounted on top of the scaffolding because I envisioned Jim Shella watching in the Channel 8 newsroom muttering, ‘there’s Joe Hogsett and he’s cheating!’” Mayor Hogsett shared.

It was 2014 when Hull started experiencing flu-like symptoms that wouldn’t subside. After enduring multiple digestive problems that landed him in the hospital twice, he traveled to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore for further evaluation. “They tore me apart,” says Hull, noting that he had pancreas problems, an enlarged spleen and a liver that was being destroyed by cirrhosis because one of the main bile ducts was completely closed and doctors could not get it open. Diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, the reason he felt so lousy was because his liver was getting bombarded by waste that his body couldn’t expel. Shortly after the diagnosis, Hull’s gastrointestinal specialist performed extra analysis when taking samples for a biopsy and found abnormal cells, indicating the early stage of cancer. “Very few people survive once cancer is in the bile ducts,” Hull says. “The prognosis wasn’t looking good.” They needed to act quickly. GREENWOOD MOM OF THE YEAR:

Kim Myers

Writer / Michelle Kaufman Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Kim Myers considers motherhood to be an amazing privilege. Her three sons Jacob, 24, Kaleb, 21, and Nicholas, 19, are the greatest joy and accomplishment in her life. In October, Myers will become a grandmother. Myers’ son Nicholas has special needs and requires full-time care. He was born with a rare genetic disorder that doctors weren’t able to diagnose him with until Nicholas was 16. “I’ve always had a strong passion for people with special needs or any type of disability,” Myers says. “I was very close to my mother, who I lost in 2009. She was very ill and became disabled from her illness when I was very young, she started getting sick when I was age four. I think I have a certain type of compassion and patience and understanding for people with special needs, just growing up with a mother who had special circumstances herself, having a child with special needs, it just kinda opened up my world to people with those needs and how I can be of any support to them.” Myers worked in Nicholas’ classroom for six years at Northeast Elementary. For the last four years, she has done data entry for IN*SOURCE, an organization that provides families with training and service opportunities for children and young adults with disabilities. Nicholas

further advanced Myers’ passion for special needs children, and that passion is something that she is happy and proud to have. Myers’ husband, David, has also been instrumental in their family and is very hands-on with caring for Nicholas. Nicholas attends school a couple of days per week with a nurse and is involved in Best Buddies, a program that takes typical peers and pairs them with special needs students. The pairs then do activities inside and sometimes outside of school. “Nicholas definitely has friends, and we try to keep him as involved as his health will allow us to because he has had some significant health declines in the past five

years,” Myers says. “We have to kind of just do things in whatever he is able to handle at the time. I think sometimes when people come across someone that is in a wheelchair or that does not have language, communication abilities as far as verbal, I think they forget sometimes that they’re still people. They still love when you talk to them and interact with them. They have friends and still love you to notice them and to be a part of this world.” Myers didn’t know that she was nominated by her mother-in-law for Mom of the Year until a friend tagged her in a post on Facebook. “I know so many exceptional mothers, so it’s

really an honor to know that my family, friends and others in the community viewed me worthy,” Myers says. “It was a surprise and I’m very honored and grateful.” Myers loves being a supporter of her children and has seen them grow into “amazing human beings.” “I love all three of my sons with all of my heart,” Myers says. “Having a child with special needs adds to already being a mom. It’s very much an extension of what you would normally perceive motherhood as. When you have someone that requires so much extra care, it really helps strengthen you and grow not just as a mom, but as a person. Nicholas has taught me a lot with everything that he has went through, and I think that’s definitely helped build me as a person and as a mom.”

GREENWOOD DAD OF THE YEAR FINALISTS RANDY BAUER Nominated by Shelby Bauer, who says:

You’ve sent in your nominations, and now it’s time to decide the Dad of the Year! The following are finalists for 2017 Greenwood Dad of the Year. Visit atgreenwood.com to cast your vote for the winner. The deadline to vote is May 12, and you can vote once daily until then. CODY STREET Nominated by Monica Street, who says: My husband is an amazing dad to our four young kids despite a back injury and other injuries he sustained during his time in the army. Even though he is medically retired, he shows his dedication to our family by working six days a week. He pushes through his injuries and six-day work weeks to be an active dad and spend quality time with each of them. He sacrifices so much for our family — both while he was in the army and now.

Randy is the dad to me and my sister, Samantha, who has Rett Syndrome. She is unable to walk or talk and is 100 percent dependent on others for all of her care. In September of 2015, my grandmother passed away suddenly, leaving my mom and dad to care for my two uncles who are blind and deaf, and have intellectual disabilities. My parents had to make the decision for my dad to quit his job to handle the new responsibilities. With my mom working full-time, my dad has been the primary caregiver for my uncles and my sister. He has done an amazing job. He has more than stepped up to the plate. Seven days a week he has to provide care for my sister and my uncles in some way, sacrificing so much. He also always makes time for my mom and me, even in the midst of all of his other responsibilities. He shows his love for God through his service for others. I appreciate him so much.
