On January 21, four new Greenwood Firefighters were sworn in. This marked a huge accomplishment for all of them, but the ceremony was a milestone for the Greenwood Fire Department. On that day, the first-ever female career firefighter in Greenwood Fire Department history, Dana Ruark, accomplished her goal to become a member of the team that seeks to preserve the life and property of area residents.

Throughout his childhood, every Sunday morning Steve Rivera sat in church listening to his preacher father deliver a heartfelt sermon to his congregants. But that’s not all he delivered. His father always made sure to interject a funny anecdote or joke into his

message to keep the congregation engaged.

“He made people laugh so hard,” Rivera says. “I thought, ‘I want to do that.’”

Throughout his school years, Rivera did his best to make someone chuckle. A fan of “The Carol Burnett Show” and “In Living Color”, Rivera appreciated both sketch and

think profanity eliminates the cleverness of writing.”

While living in Chicago, Rivera was encouraged when he stumbled upon a wave of successful comedians like Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Gaffigan, and Sinbad doing clean comedy. Rivera began performing at holiday galas and church events and found that a demographic existed that craved clean comedy. He began to seek out other entertainers in the area, and that’s when he met Dennis Tooley. Rivera shared his vision of one day owning a comedy club, and after some starts and stops in churches and other venues, Rivera opened Gutty’s Comedy Club in 2003, named from the idea of gutbusting laughter.

“I wanted the club to house anything comedy, from improv to sketch to stand-up,” explains Rivera, a freelance graphic and web designer by trade.

Rivera’s background enabled him to create all the poster boards, logos, signage and other promotional materials for the club.

Tooley did all the booking.

When Rivera and his wife Valerie moved to the area, he got a job as marketing director for Australian Gold and temporarily put his comedy dreams on the back-burner. Tooley, who also lived in the area, asked Rivera if he had any interest in resurrecting his dream.

They tried a few different venues before opening Gutty’s Comedy Club in August of 2019 in the old Catered Cabaret location.

Every Sunday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Gutty’s offers its Laff Sabbath stand-up open mic event. The venue offers two prime-time shows on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., in which it showcases a guest comedian, feature comedian, and nationallyknown headliner.

Gutty’s also offers workshops for stand-up and improv that cater to all ages.

“We had a 13-year-old go through stand-up one-on-one class, then practiced her set here at a real comedy club,” Rivera says. “We also have a young man with autism who comes to every open mic night to break his 6 / GREENWOOD MAGAZINE / APRIL 2020 / atGreenwood.com

The community response to Gutty’s has been overwhelmingly positive across all demographics, from 18 to 88.

“We really have connected with the city, and the momentum is starting to rise,” says Rivera, noting that the mayor and chamber of commerce members have been welcoming as well. “Mostly, people just are thankful to have a comedy club back in Greenwood.”

The intimate venue comfortably seats 80 - the perfect size for a comedy club according to Rivera.

“You want the laughs to stay in the room and not escape into the ceiling,” Rivera says. “And you don’t want the crowd too far from the stage.”

Rivera loves connecting with new comedians and giving them opportunities to showcase their talent.

Jade Stone Boutique is a concept driven by a love of local community and a passion for fashion.

Madonna Thompson recently opened the boutique in a charmingly remodeled house on Madison Avenue in Greenwood. She credits her family’s support and input for the shop’s initial success.

Thompson’s middle son, Payton Stone Payne, is in charge of social media content for Ric’s businesses and is currently helping with Jade Stone’s social media campaign.

Kennedy Jade Payne, Thompson’s youngest child, is on the Indiana University RedStepper Dance Team, and besides selecting merchandise and helping with social media for Jade Stone Boutique, she serves as the shop’s clothing model.

“Although I have owned my own nail salon, Nails by Madonna, for many years here in Greenwood, opening a boutique has been on my dream list for years,” Thompson says. “I have Thompson has lived in the Greenwood area since she was in always had a love for clothes and fashion and I am constantly junior high school. Along with her husband Ric Payne, a local hospitality and entertainment entrepreneur, Thompson has enjoyed raising three children who now lend their support and expertise to the boutique. Her oldest son, Matt Thompson, is the senior manager of social media and content marketing for Lids, a sports headwear and apparel retailer.

“Ric has been a huge supporter of mine in creating this boutique,” Thompson says.

“He has helped me every step of the way. Between the both of us, we designed and created this concept. All the interior work was done by the two of us. My landlord’s company, Platinum

Construction Group, LLC, renovated the house. Since I have lived and worked in the Greenwood and Center Grove area for years, I knew this is where I wanted the birth of this boutique to be.”

Thompson’s sister Marci Cosner is a major part of the nail salon, and also helps out in the boutique. Input from Cosner, as well as traveling with Kennedy to purchase inventory, have allowed Thompson to provide a wide variety of trendy styles for every age group.

“Coming up with the right name took some time,” Thompson adds.

“We wanted the name to have thought and meaning. It was a family effort. We decided to use the middle names of our two kids, Payton and Kennedy.”

Thompson says the Jade Stone Boutique concept is simple providing customers with the latest and greatest that fashion has to offer, while helping those customers to look and feel better about themselves.

“I want [customers] to be excited about their purchase and feel like they can’t wait to come back,” she says. “Being able to help people on a personal level is very satisfying. I want someone to be able to come in and get a shirt or outfit for a Friday or Saturday date night,

Hitting a High Note Local Resident Michelle Cox Performs on NBC’s “The Voice” Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography / Provided

When Michelle “Chelle” Cox was nine years old, her grandfather moved into her family’s Bargersville home.

Cox, who had been singing for as long as she had been talking, was always flitting around the house, bursting into song. One day her grandpa told her parents, “Chelle’s really good for a nine-year-old. You should consider getting her involved in something to help grow this talent.”

Cox sang in her middle school choir, but she elected to home school throughout high school. When she was 13, she asked her mom to set up a YouTube channel where she could post snippets of her talent.

“I was in love with Justin Bieber, and I knew YouTube was how he got recognized,” says Cox, who began performing at birthday parties and church events.

For the past year, Cox, 19, has worked in the Center Grove area as a preschool teacher.

“It wears me out, but I love it,” says Cox, who plans to study early childhood education and/or music education at Wabash College this fall.

Cox incorporates music into her classroom every day, whether it’s singing “Happy Birthday”, the national anthem, or Christmas carols.

“Music will always play a part in whatever I do,” she says.

Earlier this year Cox worked up the courage to audition for NBC’s television series “The Voice”, and sang a Billie Eilish song. Cox, whose blind audition aired on February 25, says she’s typically a nervous wreck before stepping on stage. On her audition day, however, she was calm, cool and collected.

“I always pray before I sing, and the fact that a peace washed over me that day - I took that as validation that God was putting me in the right place at the right time,” says Cox, who impressed all four celebrity judges, three of whom invited her onto their team.

Ultimately, Cox decided to ask Kelly Clarkson, one of the show’s judges, to coach her. Cox has taken very little professional training, having worked with a vocal coach for a couple of months when she was nine years old.

“I will vouch for ‘The Voice’ 100%, forever,” Cox says. “They are the kindest, most genuine people I’ve ever met. They push every musician so hard, but give us nothing but confidence and professional feedback as well.”

Cox calls performing on “The Voice” an incredible adrenaline rush.

“I’m my happiest self when I’m on stage,” she says.

“I cannot put into words what it feels like when you step off that stage after doing something you love.

It’s like floating in the sky and knowing you’ll never fall.”

Elton John, Carrie Underwood and Stevie Wonder rank as some of Cox’s favorite performing artists of all time.

When Cox told her family that she had made it onto the popular show, her parents were excited but not at all surprised.

“My mom told me, ‘I always knew you’d do something big,’” Cox says.

Her students were also thrilled to see their teacher perform somewhere other than the classroom. The day after her audition aired, they came running into the classroom yelling, “We saw you on TV!” Cox feels thankful for the chance to share her love of the arts with the world. atGreenwood.com / APRIL 2020 / GREENWOOD MAGAZINE / 13

“I think that having music or some type of art form is critical for children to develop correctly,” says Cox, noting that the same is true for teens and adults. “I think it’s an incredible way for people to have an outlet. Music and art have saved a lot of people from a lot of things.

Music is incredibly important for mental health.”

Cox describes herself as a typical 19-year-old girl who enjoys spending time with her boyfriend, Trenton, and her nephew, Matthew.

“My nephew is the light of my life - being an aunt is my favorite thing in the world,” says Cox, who also enjoys hair and makeup styling. “I have an entire closet filled with makeup and I’m not even joking.”

Cox enjoys hiking, collecting rocks, and many other outdoor pursuits.

She’s also an avid animal lover with three dogs and three cats of her own. In the past she’s had pet mice, turtles, lizards and frogs.

As she looks to the future, Cox hopes to increase her YouTube following. She would also like to start writing her own music.

“I would love to keep music in my life,” Cox says. “My dream is for music to be a sustainable career for myself.”

n January 21, four new Greenwood Firefighters were sworn in. This marked a huge accomplishment for all of them, but the ceremony was a milestone for the Greenwood Fire Department. On that day, the first-ever female career firefighter in Greenwood Fire Department history, Dana Ruark, accomplished her goal to become a member of the team that seeks to preserve the life and property of area residents.

The training to become a career firefighter is extensive. It involves passing both demanding physical assessments and written exams.

Dedication and perseverance are needed to make it all the way to the end of the multi-month, or even more than a year, process.

Darin Hoggatt, Greenwood Fire Chief explains how Ruark was able to meet the standards.

“She has the drive and the passion to make herself and the community better,” he says. “She never let that drive dwindle down throughout the process. The physical agility part of the training either makes or breaks people. She never stopped working toward her goal.”

Originally from Park County, Ruark was the first in her family to attend college. She moved to Indianapolis in 2005 to attend IUPUI where she earned an exercise science degree. Upon graduating, she worked in various jobs such as a personal trainer and in a cardiac rehabilitation facility. However, she never felt satisfied that she had found her niche in the working world.

“Since I went to college, my family had extremely high expectations for me,” Ruark says. “They hoped I would go on to medical school and become something like a cardiologist. But I realized that kind of environment wasn’t my passion.

“My husband Donny is a fireman as well. When he was working at the firehouse, I would come and hang out with him. I loved the environment and I loved the people. I had the idea that I would start my own business to help firefighters and first responders keep up their fitness levels. So, I started training with everyone. I was jumping out of windows doing bail out training when people said, ‘You are doing everything we are doing.

Why don’t you just become a firefighter?’”

The journey to be a firefighter takes time and determination. There are multiple steps that involve studying best practices, physical agility development and panel and one-on-one interviews. Possible candidates must train to become EMTs. Ruark thought about it long and hard before she began to take the steps needed to become a career firefighter.

“I didn’t want to be the weak link,” she says. “I was afraid I couldn’t carry the load, meaning not keep up with the physical stuff. I wanted to be an asset. So, I did things before I was asked. I worked out extra hard and if I felt like I didn’t do something right, I asked if I could do it again. I didn’t do any of it to show off- I just really knew I had to show up and work over 100%. And I wanted to learn the correct techniques.”

One aspect that Ruark had to conquer is her fear of heights. On demand, candidates are required to climb a 95’ ladder which is set at a 70-degree angle. It was a year before she overcame her anxiety.

“Every Friday I worked on it,” she says. “I would climb as high as I could go and then go down and try again. Sometimes, I just came down and cried. But I knew if I couldn’t do it, I couldn’t have this job.

Eventually, I got to the point where I could go all the way to the top and talk on the microphone up there. It was time well spent and it was necessary because sometimes on runs we must climb to the top of roofs and check HVAC systems.”

Ruark enjoys the camaraderie and the variety that her job offers.

On busy days, she may go on a dozen runs. Several are 911 calls and involve medical emergencies such as someone experiencing breathing issues or suffering from cardiac arrest. Other runs involve household or larger fires.

Work Golden 7-1008 Rule “I fell in love with this job,” Ruark adds. “I like the physical challenge and every day brings something different. I feel like I’ve been accepted into this family and I wasn’t pushed out. My advice, not just women but to everyone, is that to pursue being a career firefighter you have to have the heart to show up, push yourself and give yourself time to learn. You don’t have to be perfect from the beginning.
