High Tech Fitness Advice

By Jimmy Girot III Likely an unexpected fitness tip, technology may be the accountability you have been missing in your training program.

As technology continues to advance, it has actually become easier to use in most cases.

No jet packs or robot parts are needed for this tip; however, you may need a “smartphone” and/or internet access. There are some great, easy-to-use mobile applications I’ve personally implemented which have yielded significant results.

Fitocracy is a fun and free mobile application in which you simply record your daily fitness routine. Once recorded and saved to your Fitocracy profile, you receive points based on the details of your routine. Perhaps the most valuable aspect of Fitocracy is the networking aspect—the mobile app allows you to connect with friends, compare fitness routines, and ultimately hold one another accountable.

My Fitness Pal is basically the same model as the

previously-mentioned mobile application with daily nutrition as the key component. This mobile app allows you to record your daily meals and view various analyses of your nutrition. My Fitness Pal has networking capabilities but is more about the ability to understand exactly what you’re eating and drinking. For optimal results in any training program, knowing exactly what and how much you consume is crucial.

Nike+ is probably the most well-known of these fitness tools and equally revolutionary. The overarching theme of this mobile application is the ability to sync your favorite music with your goal-oriented workout. Nike+ also allows you to build a training program based on desired duration, distance, and/or calories burned. Basic, yet effective, Nike+ addresses every level of endurance and experience.

Nothing can replace a reasonable fitness regimen that includes proper exercise, nutrition, and recovery. That said, if you aren’t seeing desired results or need to push through a plateau, harnessing new technology may be the missing piece to your fitness puzzle.

Local Chiropractor Leads Indy Runners Fishers

By Jane VonOsdol When Chris Galloway moved to Indianapolis, he needed a way to meet new people, enjoy a little healthy competition, and find a fitness accountability partner.

Joining Indy Runners in 2005 allowed him to fulfill all those goals, plus a few extra he hadn’t counted on.

Today, Chris is the vice president of Indy Runners and leads the newly-organized Fishers branch of the organization.The other four branches are located throughout Indy in Broad Ripple, Butler, Fort Harrison, and downtown Indy.

Indy Runners started as a way for local runners to train for the 500 Festival Mini Marathon. Today, as Galloway says, “We’re not just for marathon runners. We welcome people who are running any distance and want to get new people involved.” The organization is open to runners of all levels and with varied goals, as evidenced by their motto, “A place for every pace.”

The group has a two-pronged training program, focusing on the following goals: 8

Winter/Spring Mini Training Program. This is Indy Runner’s signature training program that started in 1984.

Club members train for the 500 Festival Mini Marathon and also for the Geist Half Marathon.

Summer/Fall Marathon and Half Marathon Training Program. This training program helps its members get ready for the Indianapolis Marathon and the Monumental Marathon or any other marathon.

For Galloway, the group is all about helping people realize their goals and pushing them to improve. “Our training programs will graduate you to higher training levels,” he said. “We try to pair people up with those who run at a similar distance and pace.”

One of Galloway’s goals for the Fishers group is to increase the number of people in the club, thereby increasing the number of training levels. Currently, 100 people are registered for the group. Between 10–40 people show up for each run, depending upon the season and weather. The majority of the people are running a mile somewhere in the 7:30- to 10:30-per-mile training pace.

As a chiropractor, Galloway appreciates the health benefits that running brings to his life. He cites a study done in the Naperville, IL school system in which exercise is having remarkable results on students’ scores. “Running stimulates the pre-frontal cortex of the brain, which is involved in motor activity and executive function,” Chris said. In addition, running releases endorphins and causes an increase in dopamine and serotonin.

Through his years volunteering as a pacer and leader with Indy Runners, Chris most enjoys helping others reach their goals. He has seen people progress immensely over the course of a few months, including himself. “Running is just part of my day. If I don’t do it, I don’t feel like my brain is functioning right, and I can’t keep my mood regulated,” he said. “Running is almost like its own subculture.”

All-Volunteer Coast Guard Auxiliary Serves Indiana Waters

By J. Andy Murphy Skip Nunweiler and his wife, Bobbi, were destined to serve their country. Both have military connections as Bobbi was the daughter of a chief warrant officer serving in the United States Air Force. Her father was also Skip’s commanding officer who “sorta” introduced him to Bobbi at a squadron party. The rest is history.

units, and there can be anywhere from 15 to 50 volunteers in each one. There are flotillas in Castleton, Greenwood, Noblesville, and on the east side of Indianapolis near 38th Street and Interstate 465. There is also one on the Ohio River close to Madison.

When Skip left the Air Force, they settled in Pennsylvania, eventually ending up in Indianapolis where he retired from the corporate life. In 2005, Bobbi heard about the Coast Guard Auxiliary here, and they promptly joined together. It was another good fit. Today, Skip is division commander of Division One, an all volunteer auxiliary that expands from the 41st Latitude down to the Ohio River.

“We are a number multiplier for the Coast Guard as private citizens. There are over 35,000 volunteers across the nation, matching the 35,000 regular Coast Guard service members on active duty. Our volunteer services require no charge for the large effort expanded by the individuals who serve at large in safety and rescue operations,” Commander Skip said with obvious pride. “We offer boating safety classes throughout the year. We are involved in helping when a boat malfunctions, delivering the boaters safely back to land if need be,” adds Bobbi.

the water including Geist and Morse Reservoirs and Lake Monroe in Bloomington, to name a bit of their coverage on familiar waters. The Coast Guard Auxiliary also is involved in checking the levels of water depth and working with the Department of Natural Resources. This year at the Geist “Blast on the Bridge,” Skip and Bobbi’s group escorted the boat parade while keeping the other boats away at a safe distance during the parade.

The Auxiliary has no arrest powers, but can identify and report boaters who are breaking water laws. They can issue a “stay put” order until the police arrive to make the arrest.

To become part of an Auxiliary Coast Guard boat crew, one must be at least 17 years of age and take a full year of training on water, vessel, safety, and dockside issues. It’s critical that volunteers have a thorough understanding of each issue before they are part of an active team. Boats donated from private owners for service are subject to strict specification standards.

The Coast Guard originated in 1790, and the Auxiliary was formed in 1939. This branch of service indeed has a proud and distinguished record. The people who serve their country deserve recognition, but all too often the protection and services they provide go unrecognized by the general public.

One of the issues that is very important to most seniors is the ability to keep their most precious possession: Independence. This is where Fitness 4 Function comes in.

Drum Majors from Lawrence Central Lead the Parade

By Kara Reibel Lawrence Central High School Performing Arts has a lot to be proud of, not the least of which is their Marching Band and Guard. The Spirit of Central Marching Band and Guard (known as SOC) has twice been Bands of America Grand National Champion as well as being a consistent finalist since 1996. In addition to regional and national competitions, they have performed for national events such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Fiesta Bowl Parade, and the Tournament of Roses Parade. This year’s national event will be performing at Walt Disney World over Thanksgiving.

The key to their success is their strong leadership. Drum majors Clark Harris (senior), Kate Harris (junior) and Quentin Beverly (sophomore), have taken charge this year and are proven to be worthy of the respect they command.

According to their Co-Director, Matthew James, the drum 14

majors are the brains and the heart of the marching band.

“Being a drum major is as close to being staff as you can get. They make sure the group congeals, attitudes are good, and the focus and attentiveness of the musicians are there.” Commanding a marching band takes a very strong commitment. There are daily practices for the first 3 months of school, attending summer band rehearsals, and an overnight band camp.

A common thread of natural leadership abilities runs through these three students. While Clark and Quentin conduct on the podiums, Kate, as the field commander, is marching with the rest of the performers in addition to her conducting responsibilities. Kate is the first female drum major in four years for SOC. Quentin is a natural talent who already possesses a strong sense of self and is doing what he was born to do. Clark is a man on a mission. His goal is to lead the SOC to its first State Championship since he’s

been at LC. They are all doing what they love, and it shows.

The challenges of keeping your grades up while, at the same time, putting in all the hours for rehearsals is no small feat, yet somehow these three dynamos have managed it beautifully.

This past summer, Clark was one of 44 German students nationwide to be selected for an all-expenses-paid 3 -/2 weeks in Germany (paid for by the German government).

As part of the national German test taken by all high-schoollevel German language students, Clark scored extremely high. He went through an extensive interview process to become a finalist and then, ultimately, was chosen.

Clark hopes to attend Rose-Hulman, where he intends to major in civil engineering with a minor in music. Inspired

by John Williams and the ISO’s Krzysztof Urbanski, Quentin hopes to major in orchestral conducting in college.

Kate wishes to become a doctor; and after finishing in the top academic spot for her class the last two years in a row, she could do just that. They all will keep marching on to achieve their goals!

She’s passionate about her school work and her friends…and her favorite sport, basketball. She has a burning desire to be the best, and deep down in the Hamilton Southeastern High School senior beats the heart of a champion.

Not only is she a winner, a champion, but she’s a World Champion after helping the USA U17 women’s basketball team win the World Championship in Amsterdam, the Netherlands this past summer. Now she hopes to help her teammates become state champions in the 2012-13 girls basketball season.

championship she so dearly coveted last season, as the topranked Lady Royals finished 20 and (ouch) 1 after losing the first game of the sectional to eventual state champion North Central. A year older, a year more mature, and a year better at what she does best on the basketball court, Reimer credits much of her improvement to training, hard work, and the world-class competition from playing with the USA U17 women’s basketball team. She confidently says that the goal still remains: To be No. 1 in Indiana and, if it’s meant to be, maybe to wear the No. 1 jersey as Miss Basketball for the Indiana All-Stars.

“During last year’s high school season, we did not finish the way we had intended at all,’’ Reimer said, as if she was still reliving the disappointment. “But I think Jess (Pongonis) and I have grown up a lot, and we’re ready to take control of this team and make this a special senior season. We do have a lot of young kids, and people may be overlooking us this year, but I think we’re going to surprise some people.’’

As far as any possible individual honors, Reimer tried to put such thoughts aside, though admitting “it’s difficult because a lot of people have mentioned Miss Basketball’’ to her lately. “I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t thought about it; but at this point, I’m just worrying about my team and hopefully bringing our school a sectional, regional, semistate, and state championship. It would be a huge blessing and an honor to be named Miss Basketball, but I’ll worry about that later,’’ she said.

This past summer, though, Reimer said all of her thoughts and focus and energy went into helping lead as a starter in all eight games while Team USA finished with an unblemished record en route to claiming the gold in the World Championships. “I feel truly blessed and honored to have been a part of this team. These girls are amazing on and off the court, and I really do believe that I’ve become a better player and person through this experience. I’ll never forget this trip no matter what. It’s the first time I’ve won a World Championship, but hopefully not the last,” she said.

especially my high school team. Being the captain of the U17 team gave me so much more appreciation for leadership roles,’’ Reimer said.

Reimer, who will further her basketball career at the University of Notre Dame in 2013, called standing on the podium while the National Anthem played something she’ll always remember.

“My overall experience with the U.S. national team was incredible. Standing on that podium in front of all the fans and hearing our national anthem being played…wow, it was the greatest feeling in the world!’’ she said, proudly.

“The only thing I could think about was hopefully doing that same thing at the Olympic level one day. That entire last day was filled with pure happiness for all of us, and we

could finally let our hair down and celebrate!

Taya’s mother, Brenda, who was able to share her daughter’s experiences and happiness and celebrate with her in person, was simply thrilled and honored. “Hearing the National Anthem while in a foreign country, there is really nothing like it. You feel such pride, and it brings tears to your eyes – especially hearing it with the girls on top of the podium with their medals. It really was like an Olympic moment. And to know it’s your child on the podium, you just feel so grateful for the opportunities they have been given,’’ said Taya’s mom, who didn’t even know her daughter was the Team Captain until the medal ceremony.

“She didn’t mention it at all other than she was responsible at practices and games for getting the girls all on the same page and playing together as a team and playing hard.

It wasn’t until she led the team on the court carrying the flag at the Opening Ceremonies that I realized she was actually the captain. And then seeing her receive the World Championship trophy on behalf of the team was a tremendously proud moment.’’

Reimer — who averaged 19.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, and shot 60 percent from the field while earning first-team allstate recognition last season — said that the actual traveling was probably the worst part of the entire trip to Amsterdam,

which included three exhibition games in Italy. “Security was so much worse in Europe, plus we had to go through customs as well. I also have a really big fear of flying, so those 9-hour flights overseas were really hard for me!’’ she said.

“It was tough to catch up with all my school work once I first got back. I missed almost a week and a half, so I had a bunch of projects and papers to complete. But now that I’m back in the swing of things, I’m loving school. I have a great schedule, and I’m glad to see all my friends again.’’

Reimer’s once-in-a-lifetime summer started out by leading the Indiana Junior All-Stars to two exhibition victories over the Indiana Senior All-Stars, and she led the Junior Indiana contingent to back-to-back victories over Kentucky in the inaugural Indiana-Kentucky Junior All-Stars mid-summer games. “She played very, very well,’’ said her coach, Chris Huppenthal. “Her 3-point shooting has gotten better, as has her all-around game. She played tough inside, and she was very dominant.’’ Dominant, indeed. Reimer led Indiana with 52 points (games of 24 and 28 points) in the two wins over Kentucky. She also averaged 6.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2 blocked shots.

Looking back, though, Reimer probably has to pinch herself. It was a dream come true.

“This summer has been crazy for me. With Junior All-stars, AAU basketball, and the U17 national team, I’ve hardly had a break,’’ she said. “but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Basketball is my passion and I’m so grateful to have so many precious memories gained from playing the sport I love.’’

Former Burd Ford Dealership Has New Tenant

By Neal Moore It’s a pretty safe bet that motorists traveling along Pendleton Pike in Lawrence have noticed renewed activity at the former home of Burd Ford, Inc. – and for good reason.

The impressive structure at 10320 Pendleton Pike has a new tenant. Gone are the blue and white oval Ford Motor Company signs perched atop poles in the 45,000 sq. ft. car lot. The familiar Burd logo has been removed from the building’s facade, replaced by one that reads Sharp Cars.

In mid-August, Bob Thomas, the owner of Capitol City Ford on East Washington Street, launched Sharp Cars at the former Burd location. On the heels of Burd’s closure, Thomas signed a ten-year lease for the land and building as part of an agreement with Ford and another area car dealer. “We have enjoyed an enthusiastic reception from the community,” explained the savvy Thomas who owns multiple auto dealerships, including three in Fort Wayne.

No longer are brand new Ford cars and trucks being driven off the lot. Instead, it’s a new day and a different business model at this high-profile location in Lawrence. It’s all about used vehicles. As Sharp’s Facebook page trumpets, Sharp Cars is Indy’s Newest Pre-owned Superstore! “It’s like buying a new car without the new car price,” summed up Thomas. While Sharp accepts all comers, it’s targeting a six-mile radius as its primary market – notably the Geistarea neighborhoods. John Reynolds is a Burd holdover and now general manager of Sharp Cars. “Our lot sat empty for a couple of months, but now we have cars – a really solid inventory of certified, pre-owned vehicles. Our crew is excited, and the public has been very supportive of what we’re doing here.”

A second automotive business also is on site. Thomas relocated from his flagship store what he bills as the Midwest’s largest wholesale automotive parts distributorship. It’s called Sharp Parts, and has a sizable

inventory bulging from the floorto-ceiling shelving erected in what once were the rear service bays at Burd Ford. Sharp Parts supplies dealership service departments and independent auto repair shops throughout the region. For Thomas, the building and its location presented a unique business opportunity. “For a couple reasons.

[Burd] did sell a fair number of cars here, so we were able to take on a full vehicle service operation.

And, we were about ready to build a warehouse for our parts operation. In fact, we were in the building permit process just as this opportunity came along.”

Thomas emphasizes that automotive repair hasn’t disappeared, and that Ford’s Quick Lane oil change service is open for business. In short, Sharp Cars can do anything that franchise dealerships do – except sell new cars. “We have a full-service operation staffed by factory-trained technicians who can do any kind of repair, not just brakes and shocks,” said Thomas in describing the soup-to-nuts operation. “We’re selling certified pre-owned vehicles that are one- two- or three-year-old vehicles, most of which are still under factory warranty. That means we’re able to secure new-car finance rates. So, this essentially is for someone who wants a new car but doesn’t want to pay the new car price.”

Sharp Cars is a member of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, having already sponsored the Chamber’s golf outing, and Thomas is promising continued community involvement. Equally important is making Sharp Cars a user-friendly experience, particularly for former Burd customers. “We have all the Burd service and warranty records,” he explained. “It will be a seamless transition.”

The drive for the Alumni Association is multidimensional, with every intention to strengthen schools and local community.

First, it provides a channel for alumni to stay connected to each other and to their corresponding high school. Secondly, the Alumni Association keeps alumni informed of district happenings, ultimately generating continued support for HSE Corporation, the students, and the Foundation initiatives.

Thirdly, it helps identify alumni resources that can benefit alumni in areas such as estate planning, insurance, legal, accounting, travel, finance, banking, education, and group health care.

HSE Schools Launch New Alumni Association

By Janet C. Striebel The HSE Schools have formed an Alumni Association in order to recognize, honor, and facilitate networking for graduates of both Fishers and HSE High Schools. The kickoff for alumni events will be held on September 28 when both high schools celebrate homecoming football games.

The alumni will receive free VIP passes for special seating on the football fields. These designated gathering spots will enable alumni to meet new friends and mingle during games.

What started out as a vision by the superintendent (Dr. Brian Smith), the School Board (Diane Eaton and John DeLucia), and the Foundation (David Ayars and Tim Rogers) has evolved into a sophisticated operation. First, the Charter Steering Team was assembled to create the initial Alumni Association, followed by the implementation of social media presence (websites, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, local papers, newsletters). Finally, a comprehensive alumni database was established to aid in everything from the information-gathering templates to the “automatic” registration of new graduates.

“Superintendent Brian Smith, the School Board, and the Foundation are excited for what an alumni association can mean for all graduates of the HSE District…past, recent, and future,” says David Ayars, past president of the HSE Foundation.

He continues, “Class officers will have a resource for organizing reunions, recent grads will be able to visit high schools and connect with buddies at the holidays and homecoming games, and local HSE alumni will now have a vehicle to network in the Indianapolis/Fishers area. The opportunities are limitless, and the benefits to alumni, the schools and, finally, to the Town of Fishers are huge.”

Connecting with the Past

On September 28, the Fishers High School homecoming honored the Class of 1962, celebrating its 50-year reunion from the original Fishers High School, and the first-ever graduating from the new FHS, the Class of 2008, celebrating its 5-year reunion.

“The first graduating class of the original Fishers High School was 1896,” says Jim Brooks, a member of the Fishers High School Association that is known for awarding two sets of two $500 scholarships per year: One set to HSE High School and one set to FHS. Jim, and his wife, Janice, both attended the original FHS and were graduates of the Class of 1960. Jim recalls the two-and-a-half story building with the big bell tower. This

former high school with the bell that rang in the mornings once stood where Fishers Elementary is now located on Lantern Road.

Interestingly enough, the Class of 1967 will be the last class to commemorate from the former FHS, as the Class of 1968 represents the first graduating class of Hamilton Southeastern High School. Jim has served as the “historian” for the implementation of the new Alumni Association project.

Like a hub, this newfound Alumni Association has worked hard to bridge all ages of graduates from both the former Fishers High School and those of the new FHS. What’s more, the present Fishers High School has captured memories from the original high school. If you walked into FHS right now, you would see composite class pictures in the hall from the east entrance as well as trophies and special memorabilia displayed in glass cases within the interior hall.

This not only represents a grand way to show support and pay tribute to those alumni who attended the original high school, but it also demonstrates a conscious willingness to link the past with the present and future in a most nostalgic way.

Artist Finds Beauty in Geist Sunsets

By Pat Carlini Geist resident and artist Barbara Henriksen Andrews has been proudly showing off her latest exhibition in the Fishers Town Hall art gallery over the summer. The show, “Reflections of the Midwest,” is a group of over three dozen oil paintings depicting Midwest flowers, corn fields, barns and silos, and even a Midwest thunderstorm brewing over railroad tracks. But something very recognizable in her exhibition is the paintings of sunsets — at Geist!

Andrews, who graduated from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, moved to Indiana after college to study at Butler University and wound up staying in Indiana. She later married and moved to Geist. Today, she is an art educator at New Palestine High School and enjoys spending time with her husband, kids, and grandkids at their home on Geist.

“Our entire family enjoys the lakeside living, but I especially enjoy the sunsets so I started adding them to my Midwest collection,” says Barbara.

The artist likes to snap photos of sunsets from her back deck overlooking Geist, then she heads to the downstairs to her favorite place to paint – the furnace room!

“Its quiet with no distractions!” laughs Barbara.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Hits Close to Home

By J. Andy Murphy Donna White is the whole package: Smart, kind, loving, successful, great sense of humor, and in her own words, determined. This package is wrapped in a pink ribbon because she is also a breast cancer survivor.

“I was just finishing the process of getting my realtor’s license when the cancer was discovered. It took my breath away when the doctor told me. But life is beautiful and I knew I had lots more to do, so I told myself to just ‘get over it, girl, and get on with it,’” she said with a huge smile that lights up any room she’s in. And one thing’s for sure, she took her own advice and got over it!

Donna didn’t hedge about the anxiety of going through chemo, radiation, and reconstruction surgery. She spoke of the kindness and care she received, the other women she met during her treatment process, and the love and support she got from her husband, Jerome, and her family.

The look in her eyes told me that, indeed, this woman is beaming with an energy that delivers a contagious outlook on life.

Today, Donna is a successful Realtor with the Re/Max Legends Group located at 5645 Castle Creek Parkway North in Indianapolis. “When we moved to The Moorings in Lawrence Township, I made it a point to get to know the real estate market on all sides of town so if someone calls me from any side of town, I am there .. no matter how far away they might live from my office,” she said.

“I feel blessed, as the best thing about my job is meeting wonderful people. I feel privileged to get to know my clients and feel I have the ability to know what their needs are, as it is definitely a needs career. My personal motto has always been ‘Listen to your needs, and fulfill your dreams!’ It’s what I live by!”

Spending time with her is, indeed, wonderful medicine for anyone lucky enough to be in her company for any length of time. It wasn’t always easy for her to talk about her journey with cancer. “I had saved up all my tears, not speaking about what I went through. Outwardly, a lot of people didn’t even know I had cancer,” she said.

“So what changed this?” I asked.

“Getting involved with Susan G. Komen as an Ambassador for the Komen Foundation.

I knew as a breast cancer survivor I would, perhaps, be asked to share my journey and tell my story. I looked in the mirror and told myself, ’Girl, if my being a survivor gives another woman hope and encouragement and the support they need, then I needed to step up and be that person,” she answered. City of Lawrence Council Update The last 6 weeks have been very busy for the Council with several resolutions and ordinances submitted for council approval. Ordinance #15, which was recently approved by all 9 council members, was a significant event. The original ordinance, titled Ordinance #11, was submitted by the Mayor which Lawrence City would have eliminated 24 EMTs from Councilman Tom the City of Lawrence public safety unit.

This ordinance was submitted as a way to Shevlot provide the city a positive fund balance at the end of the year.

The total reduction of the ordinance to the 2011 budget was approximately $878,000, of which $613,000 was directly related to a reduction in force of 24 EMTs. The council challenged the administration to find another option to amend the 2011 budget without eliminating these positions.

Public safety for the citizens of Lawrence is a priority for this council and the elimination of these employees would have a negative impact of providing these crucial services to the community. Through numerous meetings and conversations with the administration, the council was presented an option that mitigated and addressed the budget shortfall in the short term. A company called Indianapolis EMS stepped in and agreed to absorb these 24 EMTs into

their operation and committed to us that service levels would not be affected in any way. Additionally, all EMTs jobs were saved.

Resolution #9 was also passed which secured the services of Ice Miller, LLP to provide assistance in completing the city’s statutory obligation to redistrict the Common Council of the city by the end of the year. The Council will then be presented new district maps for approval.

As Vice Chair of the finance committee, I sponsored three other ordinances and resolutions that assists in reducing expenses of our city. Two of these were refinancing/ refunding of two bonds to take advantage of lower interest rates. This will save the city over the term of the bonds approximately $100,000. In another step to help reduce expense in budget year 2013, the city will suspend for the remainder of 2012 budget year and all of 2013 the city’s contribution of 3% to the public employee retirement fund.

The expectation is this 3% will be restored in 2014 after more long term solutions of revenue generation and expense reductions are in place.

The next priority will be reviewing and passing the city’s 2013 budget. There will be several finance committee meetings where the budget will be discussed, and on the first Monday in October, the full budget will be presented to Council as a whole.

Allegra Wraps Up Local Landscaper

By Janet C. Striebel Recently, Allegra, a marketing support services company, has begun a significant “fleet graphics” project for Shane’s Outdoor Living & Landscapes. So far, two pickup trucks have been wrapped but the designs are underway for twelve vehicles in all, including eight dump trucks.

“Our main goal is to grow our client’s business,” says John Long, owner of Allegra, located in Castleton. “We can also do yard signage for Shane’s.” John and his wife, Doreen Long, share ownership roles with Allegra, a small business marketing company that specializes in quality posters, signs, banners, vehicles wraps, and more. Allegra, not only has production experts to assist in the design process, but it also has its own in-house services for graphic design, advanced printing, and mailing capabilities.

Have you seen the gigantic signage used for the start/ finish towers in the Geist Half Marathon? Allegra was responsible for designing and installing these remarkable towers and all the posters, banners and signs. John and Doreen have been loyal supporters of this charitable event since its inception five years ago.

So far, the results of installing fleet graphics on Shane’s vehicles have been optimistic. Shane’s Landscaping tracks incoming calls to identify where leads are generated and how customers have heard of the company. Several callers have reported seeing these newly embellished trucks with unique branding.

“The wrapped vehicles are like mobile billboards,” says Rob Delaby, president of Shane’s Landscaping. “This type of advertising represents marketing dollars well spent, signifying the main level of integrity of our brand name.”

Rob views these vehicle graphics as a worthy improvement to the brand identity. He continues, “These wraps are like instant facelifts, eye appealing and attractive. The vehicles we drive are representative of who we are—much like the clothes we wear. It speaks to the same quality of the work that we do when we are out on a project.”

But as landscaping plans for many slowed, so did fountain and waterfeature sales. That means now may be a good time to find a bargain in garden centers.

T

here is nothing quite as refreshing and relaxing as the sound of trickling water in a garden or the splash of a fountain in your back yard.

But the sound of water was certainly scarce during the summer drought of 2012! There was little rain, sprinkler systems were shut off, and lakes were drying up. So, it wasn’t a great time to Invest in Your nest by adding a water feature to your garden! But now that drought conditions have eased up, you can enjoy the sound of water in your yard and you can get that water feature ready for spring.

Owner Jeff Gatewood of Allisonville Nursery says water fountains were in high demand at the beginning of the hot weather streak this year. “Everyone was thinking of ways to cool off and fountains have a cooling effect,” says Jeff. “You swear it’s a few degrees cooler around a water feature!”

I recently found a “reclaimed” fountain at Allisonville Nursery .

“Reclaimed” simply means it was discarded at one time, discovered, and put back up for sale at a fraction of the original price. It is a little distressed, but the minor damage gives it character. It has found a new home in the center of my flower garden in my back yard.

There are tiered fountains, wall-mount fountains, and bubbling rock fountains to choose from, as well as lavish rock waterfalls and small ponds. Most garden centers will install the water feature. However, if you do it yourself, just make sure you begin with a level spot for your fountain and a reservoir at the bottom so the water can recycle – to save water just in case hot, dry weather strikes again next year.

At the onset of winter, clean away debris from your fountain, drain all water, and wrap it to protect it from the cold. In the spring, your water feature will be ready to make a splash in your garden, and the sound of water will once again be music to your ears!

her calmly that her little baby boy had been taken to St. Vincent’s Carmel hospital. The trip to the hospital became just a blur as her mind tried to handle what was wrong with her baby.

When she arrived, the doctors met her and sadly stated that they had done all that was possible but Aidan was gone … finding out later that his life was claimed by SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

By J. Andy Murphy September 24th, 2002 was a normal morning for Sharea Brehm. It was her second day back to work after giving birth to her beautiful, healthy, three-month-old baby boy, Aidan. He was a happy, healthy baby who was nursed, put to sleep on his back and given a perfect start to life.

In a matter of hours, the most unimaginable happened.

The sheriff’s department called her workplace and told Speech,

SIDS is the sudden, unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant under one year of age that remains unexplained after the performance of a complete postmortem investigation, including an autopsy, an examination of the scene of death and a review of the medical history. As a result of the national Back To Sleep campaign, SIDS rates have declined by more than 50%.

Despite this success, SIDS remains the leading cause of death for infants one month to one year of age, continuing to claim the lives of approximately 2,300 babies each year.

At this time there is no known way to prevent SIDS, but there are steps parents and caregivers can take to reduce the risk of sudden infant death: • Place your baby on his or her back to sleep.

• Do not smoke while you are pregnant and don’t let anyone smoke around your baby after they are born.

Geist Winery Celebrates First Harvest One Year Early

land. That’s a good start for a vineyard in Central Indiana.

ive hundred people turned out for the open house at Daniel’s Vineyard in August. Not bad for a business that doesn’t have anything to sell, no building to sell it in, and not a sign in sight. Apparently, all it takes is planting a Napa Valley-looking grape orchard and people get really excited.

Vineyard manager Scott Hamilton says they planted their first grapes in late 2010 and didn’t expect to be able to harvest until 2013. Despite the drought we suffered through this summer, the grapes were ready for harvesting this year instead of next. He says growing grapes in Central Indiana isn’t difficult, it’s maintaining them over time that can be hard.

Daniel’s Vineyard is the brainchild of businessman Dan Cook who bought some land in what is technically McCordsville in Hancock County, but also borders Marion and Hamilton Counties and is smack dab in the middle of the Geist area. It’s located south of 96th Street on Carroll Road where people have been passing by for months now seeing the vineyard take shape and wondering what was going on. What was going on was the planting of 14,000 vines in eight different varieties of grapes on 27 acres of 40

Dan Cook’s daughter, Stephanie, is handling marketing for the Vineyard and his daughter, Jenna, is the operations manager, so it is a family affair. Jenna has worked for a winery before, but basically, everyone involved is learning the business from – literally – the ground up.

The plan is to have an actual winery, complete with a tasting room, open in 12 to 18 months. Even sooner, though,

Daniel’s Vineyard held their first annual Grape Stomp on Saturday, September 22. Residents were able to take off their shoes and stomp the first harvest. they hope to open a brewery at the site because that can be done quicker. Wine needs a great deal of lead-up time, whereas beer does not. Jenna says the big picture is to make the vineyard a place for the community to gather, with an amphitheater for live music and a catering facility and banquet hall for weddings and meetings. The fact that they are planning to offer both wine and beer is a bit unusual, and they hope that will draw everyone in – no matter what your drink of choice.

Historic House of Blue Lights Subject of New Book

If you were a teenager in the 50s or 60s, you knew about the House of Blue Lights. This urban legend still sends chills, as it is an almost perfect scary story built entirely on myths.

The rumors actually began in the 30s and escalated as the years went by.

Mr. Test was a self-made millionaire who owned Diamond Chain and a NASH car dealership, as well as many other investments and businesses. He also owned hundreds of acres of land off Fall Creek Parkway where he lived and operated a working farm and cat shelter. Today, this land is host to the Skills Test Nature Park and the Skills Test Elementary School, Avalon Hills, and the beautiful Hillcrest Country Club.

I was one of those teens who ventured out on a double dare with a date to see the dead lady in the glass casket displayed in the glow of blue lights!

The fear of actually seeing this was real, and all it took to put the car in reverse was the loud barks of what sounded like a pack of German shepherds descending down the very dark driveway. So it was wonderful to meet Garry Ledbetter who has adapted the story into a fun mystery based on the myths of the man who owned the land and the urban legend

Garry shared that the farm had 8 full-time farm workers and 6 household workers, many of whom lived in tenant houses between 65th Street and Johnson Road. He paid the workers a salary of $30 per week and gave them free rent with all utilities paid. He also gave each worker 10 gallons of gas per week and added in half a hog and a cow to their food supply. He never missed giving each family a $1,000 Christmas bonus.

his own electricity after a $2 overcharge came through from the light company. He also designed his own solar system to heat many of the buildings and his large in-ground swimming pool. He invented the electric bug zapper and developed electromagnetic therapy which is now used to help depression. I guess you could say he was really ahead of his time with the inventions,” said Garry.

The book is a fun mystery, and most of the story details many of the real facts concerning the man whose legend scared the pants off kids.

“Bleeding ulcers and a weak heart killed him. He was haunted by all the traffic trying to come onto his property – so much that he stopped living at his house, staying every night with a friend who lived nearby,” adds Garry who is a new author. It was a story he just had to write. Glad he did because I now know the real story and can, at last, drive by this area without being afraid of the House of Blue Lights!

Praying 4 Jacob: Ongoing Mission of Hope and Healing from his garden went toward the food pantry at his church.

Since his accident, the youth group has taken over the responsibilities and kept his garden alive, in his honor.

On April 6, Jacob’s family moved him to the Shepherd Center (specializing in acquired brain/spinal cord injuries) in Atlanta, Georgia. Jacob lives with his parents, Sheree and Baxter, and is the youngest of four children. Together, they have faced their fair share of obstacles. For instance, the fourth day after the accident, the medical staff basically gave up hope on Jacob. However, the Bolling family, strong in their faith, was not about to give up.

By Janet C. Striebel On March 8, Jacob Bolling (18), a senior at Hamilton Southeastern High School, experienced an accident on his way to school. Although there is no certainty about the exact cause, the heavy rain may have contributed to his truck hydroplaning prior to hitting a large tree on Cyntheanne Road. No, he had not been texting on his phone and yes, he was wearing a seat belt. Unfortunately, he suffered significant brain trauma resulting in his comatose state ever since.

Who is Jacob Bolling?

“Jacob’s whole life has been centered on music,” says Luann Hansen, family friend of the Bolling family. Not only did Jacob play the guitar, but he also played the drums for “Drumline” and the marching band at HSE High School. Moreover, he played drums in a praise band at Bethel Lutheran Church. Luann recalls, “Shortly before his accident, he and his friends made a mixed CD with some of their favorite songs. Since then, his friends have come by his home to visit and play the CD for him. One day when Jacob was over at our house, he asked my husband, Kevin, if he could use his guitar for his senior pictures.” Obviously, it was very important to have this instrument sitting with him in the background, signifying a meaningful prop. To his family and friends, Jacob is very much alive and so is his love for music.

In addition to recently becoming an Honor Roll student at HSE, Jacob is an Eagle Scout. His project, a community garden, involved him building the planter boxes to grow vegetables and getting the soil donated. The vegetables 46

Jacob had to have his spleen removed due to excessive bleeding. In addition, he had to have his ear sewn back on because it was so badly severed. Furthermore, during the surgery for inserting a stomach tube, the staff punctured his colon in two different places. As a result, this operation had to be repeated. What’s more, his tracheotomy had to be redone in Georgia. On top of all this, he also had pneumonia, a scratched cornea, six pairs of casts on his feet, and five casts on one arm. Luann says, “They have to keep the feet at the right angle so that they will heal properly allowing him to walk again someday.”

Jacob stayed in Georgia for almost four months before coming back home to Noblesville. Luann states, “This facility did everything they could do to try and wake him up.

Technically, he is still in a coma, but emerging. Although his eyes can now open, he is unable to follow commands on a regular basis or hold anything in his hands.” He can sit in a wheel chair (with his helmet on,) and be fed minimal soft foods and sips of liquids. He has a bone flap (which means a part of his skull is out) and a pain pump implanted in his side.

Paddle Up! Geist to Host Inaugural Fall Fling

By Tom Britt Geist’s first annual “Fall Fling” features several non-motorized boat races around the south end of Geist Reservoir on Saturday, October 6th.

To encourage another type of boating and enhance the recreational opportunities on Geist Lake, the Geist Marina will host their first annual “Fall Fling” on Saturday, October 6th.

“We want the whole family to come out and have a good time,” said Kent Duckwall, the Director of Operations at the Geist Marina.

The day begins at 9:30 am with registration for the 7.6 mile marathon around the south half of Geist Reservoir.

Following the shoreline and pre-marked buoys, competitors will paddle their way from the Marina down to the dam and back.

While the marathon is taking place, stand-up paddle board classes will be given as well as introductory kayaking and canoeing clinics led by certified instructors. Guided kayak tours of Geist Reservoir and safety demos will be going on all day long.

During the afternoon, 500 meter sprint races will take place for all age groups.

And if that wasn’t enough, Bella Vita will host a beer garden with refreshments and a free wine tasting in the afternoon.

The event will end with an old-fashioned cook-out by Ted’s Smokehouse BBQ and awards presentation from 4:00-6:30 pm.
