Holy Heartfailure, It’s Batman!

Just when I finally got up enough nerve to join the whole planking craze that hit the U.S. over the last year, another trend has come along. It’s called batmanning, and I’m a little discouraged.

In case you’ve missed out on all the excitement, batmanning is just one in a line of social media phenomenon that involves taking pictures of people doing strange things in public. I will bring you up to speed: Planking – This is a popular and well-documented ritual

of publicly laying facedown, stiff-as-a-board, with arms touching the sides. The planker must be photographed, and evidence is shared online. I have never attempted to plank, although I once fell asleep in a doctor’s office in the same position. Unfortunately, a teenager captured it on his cell phone. He then exclaimed, “Way cool,” before posting it on his Facebook page.

Owling – This lesser known practice consists of posing

crouched, like an owl, in unexpected places, such as on top of a public structure or in the middle of a sporting event. I can’t properly owl, as once I am in the necessary crouching position, it takes at least an hour and four assistants to get me back up, which proves to be too complicated and timeconsuming.

Horsemaning – A trend that took its name from

the Headless Horseman, this involves considerable forethought and creativity. Two people pose for a picture

so that a subject’s body appears to be decapitated. Talk about a buzz kill. One person has to be the head, and the other the body. I’m not kidding. Google it if you don’t believe me. When I asked a friend to participate in horsemaning, she just looked at me blankly and told me I needed to see a therapist.

Batmanning – And now we come to the

good stuff. Purdue students are actually getting the credit for coming up with this one (Go Boilermakers!). This involves the fine art of hanging upside down by your feet (like a bat), from public structures.

Whether your hands are at your side or folded across your chest is completely up to you.

My first reaction to batmanning was: what if you fall? It’s not like you can whip your feet around to land, cat-like, firmly on your feet. You will most likely bash your head on a hard surface, which would be a drawback. Being the serious journalist that I am, I immediately contacted my nephew, who is a sophomore at Purdue, in order to get reaction. When I asked him for his thoughts, he simply replied, “It seems pretty dumb to me.”

My second reaction to batmanning was this: do you need special shoes? The answer, quite sadly, is no. There are no official batmanning shoes with special hooks, velcro or steel brackets. You just have to be able to keep your ankles at a 90 degree angle while supporting your entire weight … upside down. I have a suspicion that wearing a helmet would somehow be frowned upon.

I’m thinking about inventing some sort of inflatable pillow that could be placed underneath the batmanner, just in case.

Obviously, I would call it The Bat Bumper. But probably by the time I get the patent and a prototype, this practice will be old news and a new fad will take its place.

In the meantime, I’m going to have to decline any batmanning invitations. There’s no way I’m hanging upside down in public. But perhaps at the doctor’s office …

Douglas laughs as he says, “I love cars. I’m like the kid that never grew up. People collect dolls, baseball cards… but I collect cars.” He rebuilt his first engine at 13 years old.

That was only the beginning of his engine building success.

He also built all of the engines in the championship winning cars that he raced as well as several of those of his fellow co-racers.

“My dad’s custom ‘54 Ford is in my shop right now,” boasts Douglas, who loves to modernize any chance he can get. “My dad brought it in for a new gas gauge but we are redoing the dashboard and installing a touch screen flip-out navigation DVD player that plays iPod and videos.”

Douglas bought his first car, a ’67 Charger, at the age of fifteen. He raced it and won several championships. After owning it for 23 years, he sold it to someone in Hawaii.

Later, his fateful wheel would steer him in a different direction.

One day, he got a phone call from a man named Jimmy Ray who was looking for someone to race his car because he had been terribly hurt in a motorcycle accident, leaving him a paraplegic. As a result, Douglas became half owner of a ’67 Camaro with Ray, completely transforming the car within a five-year period getting it to the top of its class, all the while, racing it in Ohio, Michigan, Georgia, Tennessee, Illinois, Kentucky, Orlando, and Indy. Douglas recalls the coincidence of how he and Ray both owned their first cars at fifteen, and both raced cars and motorcycles in drag races.

“I always try to be the best that I can,” says Douglas, who once raced a NASCAR in the “Richard Petty Experience” at the Indy 500 track, and got the fastest time of the day. He has also raced a NASCAR truck at the Indy Raceway Park. He admits, “I prefer drag racing as I don’t like going in a circle.” But he is very competitive, even when he goes go-karting with his kids.

Ironically, in 2008, Douglas was also involved in a motorcycle accident. He was badly hurt with many broken parts such as ten broken ribs, four vertebrae, a collarbone, a shoulder and a punctured lung. Although he owns a 2009 Challenger SRT-8 and 2010 Camaro SS and has raced them, he has not raced in a head-up series since his accident, yet remains open minded to the idea again someday.

A crowd favorite of the Circle City Derby Girls is Bona Contention, a 10-year breast cancer survivor.

The announcer yells, “Cassie Khaos is the lead jammer!” over the loudspeaker as the Circle City Derby Girls (CCDG) Party Crashers motor around the track, armored with kneepads, elbow pads and helmets. And they need them, because it isn’t long before there’s a pileup on the track; a handful of blockers go down and then just as quickly scramble back up on their skates and take off again.

This female dominated sport isn’t for the faint of heart (or brittle of bone).

The CCDG jammer passes opposing skaters from the Cornfed Derby Dames of Muncie, racking up points as she goes, while her blockers play both offense and defense, trying to clear a path for Khaos while simultaneously blocking the other team’s jammer.

In the CCDG pack is Bona Contention, known off the derby track as Jeanie Neal. This last bout of their regular season is a special one for her. Because while she’s laying it all out on the track, fans can bid on a papier mâché 8

version of her bust, decorated by a local artist, to benefit the Young Survival Coalition of Central Indiana (YSC, http://youngsurvival.org/ centralindiana). According to the YSC Central Indiana website, it is committed to providing connections, support and outreach to young women diagnosed with breast cancer, both during and after treatment.

As a 10-year breast cancer survivor, Neal is passionate about giving back to an organization that has given so much to her.

Breast Impressions, Inc. (www.breastimpressions.com), an organization whose mission is to increase breast cancer awareness and fundraising to support breast cancer education, prevention and treatment, has been working with leagues of the Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby Association (including Indy’s other roller derby team, the Naptown Roller Girls) by providing breast casting kits to create busts to decorate to raise

awareness and funds for local breast cancer programs. Neal knew this was a project for the Circle City Derby Girls.

Fellow roller derby girl, Bliss Young-Morris (aka Mistress Azrael), decorated her own bust in a nod to her Irish heritage.

“I pestered our team ever since I joined to do this,” she said.

Six decorated busts in all were being auctioned off.

“Roller derby teams traditionally are involved with charity work,” Neal said. “Like ours, some teams donate a portion of their ticket sales to charity.”

YSC, the Circle City Derby Girls have worked with Second Helpings and Backpack Attack, among other organizations.

Fellow teammate Bliss Young-Morris (aka Mistress Azrael) was a bust model and decorator. Of Irish descent, she chose to decorate her bust cast in green with Irish symbols, including a stylized Claddagh. “It symbolizes friendship, love and loyalty,” she said. “With derby, it’s something as teammates that we share.”

As for Neal, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in January of 2001, she’s been in remission since finishing treatment in August of that year. She stays active with advocacy, going to Washington to lobby Congress for more research and reviewing grants for cancer related programs.

And she stays active with the Circle City Derby Girls (www.circlecityderbygirls.com), practicing four times a week. The

Some of the spam I receive on a regular basis is for products that I can’t mention in this column. But recently, I’ve had a few emails about unmentionables, and I’d like to mention those: Bra Wonder, Super Bra and my favorite, Bra Genie.

It struck me as odd that I would get so many of these in a week. Manufacturers nowadays have all kinds of ways to target their message to the appropriate market. So why was a regular guy like me getting stuff like this? I tried red flagging key words so this type of advertising would go directly to my spam folder, but all it did was block a really good coupon for Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Sadly, while discussing this issue with friends, I found it impossible to avoid immature plays on words. I would say things like: who are the boobs sending me this junk? I was very disappointed in myself, but there is nothing more alluring than easy puns, and I am weak.

I did want to know why these ads were flooding my inbox, so I called my techie friend and told him I had this problem that was staring me smack in the face. (See? I can’t help myself.) He responded, “Okay, Dick, it sounds like you need some support.”

The column appeared in this newspaper and in my blog, and then probably ended up in the search engines at Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Do you know what algorithms are? Me either. But apparently my wife’s observation about my “decrepit looking chest” found its way to brassiere makers the world over, who selected me from a database of everyone unhappy with their upper half.

Before I wrote this column, I printed out all the spam ads so I could read them more carefully. When Mary Ellen was poking around my office looking for an envelope she saw the material on my desk and assumed that either I thought she needed a Bra Genie or I wanted to wear one myself.

You can see that neither alternative was going to lead to a conversation a husband was eager to have.

Then to make matters worse, some computer software programs couldn’t distinguish between “dissatisfied with your upper half” and “unhappy with your better half,” which meant I got a slew of ads for do-it-yourself divorce kits. How much ’splainin’ can a guy do?

When I explained to Mary Ellen why I was getting spammed, I admitted that I had looked at several of the bra ads, but at least I had stopped making childish puns and double entendres. It was good to get all that off my chest.

“Oh no, Kevin, now you’re doing it.” I hung up. It was time to figure this out myself. And I finally did.

“I would have absolutely loved having an action shot of myself when I was a kid,” says Kory Seitz, co-owner of FanStand Prints. “My mom once made me a quilt, piecing different memories of me in several sports that I played which meant a lot to me… but I would have been so thrilled to see my face up on a personalized banner of the facility where I played.”

This concept has actually been realized at Westfield High School when the baseball coach, last spring, asked FanStand Prints to dress their field with mesh windscreens featuring their seniors. These banners looked so incredible that the Westfield football team, this fall, has decided to highlight each of its seniors along with the cheerleaders on 33 banners.

“These products sell themselves,” says Seitz, who has also sold banners to the Carmel High School volleyball team. He is also talking with other prospects on the college level, such as Indiana Wesleyan University, about making banners for the soccer team.

Seitz continues, “We are not restricted to just printing sports items. We can print everything from baby blankets and other individualized images to 4-H, band, and more. No event group is off limits.”

On its website, the proprietors of Donatello’s Italian Restaurant describe their establishment, in the heart of downtown Carmel’s newly minted Arts and Design District, as “a new romantic destination” and “an homage to dining in a classier time. The days of ‘Mad Men’-esque executives enjoying a carefully cooked meal made from fresh ingredients. Servers treat you like royalty as you sit at tables with crisp white cloths… no TV’s to be distracted by sports.

No drunken locals trying to pick up women….”

I know my bride of more than three decades would find such an invitation alluring, having long despaired of enduring a romantic dinner with her dubious significant other at a contemporary restaurant, as he gazes lovingly into her azure blue eyes with his pea soup green left eye, while the right eye of the presumed same color drifts past her left earlobe to the hi-def TV looming over the bar area like a Diamond Vision screen at Lucas Oil Stadium, to see if Tiger, Phil, or Rory makes this tricky downhill, 8-foot birdie putt on 17 to take the lead in the third round of the Charlie Sheen Desert Classic in Modesto.

Said proprietors of Donatello’s Italian Restaurant bring lofty credentials and credibility to the concept of romantic dining with undivided attention on the cuisine and on the person you brung (or brung you). For Patrick and Beth Aasen presided over the fine dining jewel, Arturo’s Italian Restaurant, which enjoyed an acclaimed 12-year run in the classy Woodfield Center retail center off 86th and Keystone Avenue from 1991 to 2003, before essentially being forced out with other high-end tenants for a never consummated redevelopment plan that has rendered Woodfield Center Indianapolis’ classiest vacant retail center. Di Rosa was just one of many legendary dining impresarios who gave Aasen his culinary education in fine dining kitchens in the area, including John Macri of Italian Village fame, and Italian-born Rudy Nucilla, who presided over the much beloved Rudy & Rosa’s bistro in the late 1980’s.

Donatello’s opened just in time for New Year’s Eve last year, on Carmel’s Main Street, just east of South Rangeline Road. It most reminds me of the relaxed, intimate country bistro ambiance achieved by Rudy & Rosa’s than the fine dining formality that marked Arturo’s. Beth Aasen brings a warmth to the décor, with tomato red walls adorned with soothing Impressionist land and seascape paintings, and tables covered in white linen. Operating on a very small start-up budget, the Aasens, along with their son Adam, did all of the internal construction, wiring, and decorating and whatall to craft their cozy Italian bistro. And by cozy, we’re talking just a 32-seat capacity – no bar, not a hi-def TV in sight… nothing to distract from the matter at hand, except for what the diner brings onto the premises in the form

For nothing should distract from the cuisine, and the sparkling conversation and romantic cooing designed to accompany it. The proceedings are nicely launched with slices of hot, fresh bread to be adorned with a mixture of olive oil, diced tomatoes and garlic.

Highlighting the appetizer menu are deep fried cheese ravioli with tomato dipping sauce ($7); the lightly fried calamari ($8), best shared to avoid appetite decimation; and my appetizer option of the evening, the Ravioli Gorgonzola ($7), large ravioli squares filled with a tasty five-cheese blend and emboldened in a flavorful cream sauce. It was very much what you look for in an appetizer, solid flavors but not so rich as to undercut your desire for the courses that follow.

The calamari, along with shrimp, is a star attraction of the Zesty Seafood Salad ($8), featuring romaine lettuce, olive oil and basil. Other salad attractions include the Italian Chef rendition ($8) of lettuce, turkey, prosciutto, peppers, and mozzarella and parmesan cheeses tossed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar; and the Gorgonzola Fruit Salad ($7), with the showcased gorgonzola cheese accompanied by tart apples, dried fruit, onion, walnuts and croutons in a fat-free raspberry dressing. embellishment of the Indiana tomato, I reveled in the Tossed Caprese Salad ($6), the enriched combination of sliced tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella on a bed of lettuce with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, an excellent seasonal salad preliminary.

Donatello’s pasta entrees give Aasen a chance to show off his imagination and dexterity with the sauce pan. With his Tortellini Michelangelo ($16), he applies a thick blush cream sauce to the large cheese-filled tortellini pasta rings, topped with mushrooms, onion, bacon flecks, and parmesan.

A spicier sauce featuring tomato, kalamata olives, pepperoncinis, capers, anchovies, and garlic, adorns penne pasta bearing the muscular moniker of Penne Puttanesca ($16).

Penne pasta is also featured in a dish ($18) that takes in shrimp and a pesto sauce of olive oil, pine nuts and basil. A sauce made of cream, egg, bacon, and parmesan cheese graces the Spaghetti Carbonara ($16), while a rich creamed and cheesed sauce is the prime IndIanapolIs Monthly motivation to order the MagazIne classic Fettuccini Alfredo 5-star realtor ($17), infiltrated with sliced chicken, shallots and peas.

This appears to be one of Aasen’s most popular entrees, enhanced by the extreme tenderness of the beef, the zesty kick provided by the crunchy peppercorns in the sauce, and the flavorful bite of the smooth Dijon sauce, fully complementing, not overwhelming the flavor goodness of the filet. The dessert menu changes daily, with Aasen’s tiramisu already possessing a solid word-of-mouth, taste-of-tongue reputation, in tandem with the Italian cream cake, a specialty and valuable contribution of Beth’s mother, Susie Brunner.

The moist, delicately sweet white cake is effectively iced in a cream frosting sprinkled with flakes of coconut. This cake has a surprising lightness that helps assuage any guilt one might have with age- and waistline-related dessert

indulgence… or so I convinced myself. And all I really needed to know is that Mrs. Brunner’s Italian Cream Cake won the first place blue ribbon in the 2002 Indiana State Fair.

With just 32 seats, it doesn’t take long to achieve a full house just about any night at Donatello’s, with patrons arriving around 7 p.m. usually confronted with a fairly lengthy wait – with no bar to belly up to while biding one’s time, charming the companion with streams on bon mots, one eyed cocked on ESPN sports intelligence, and fingers poised to tweet and text. Thus, reservations are a very good idea, especially on the weekends, with the Aasens inviting dinersin-waiting to stroll Main Street and environs and take in the galleries and merchants that comprise the Carmel Arts and Design District. Testosterone Deficiency Gains Better Awareness

The awareness of male hormone deficiency, often called andropause, has gained wide ranged publicity over the past few years on the East and West Coasts of the United States. A quick glance in the yellow pages in these areas and one would notice the growing popularity of clinics with a focus on treating “male menopause” or simply testosterone deficiency. But why the sudden interest in such therapies?

And now Fishers – specifically, 11687 Olio Road at Geist Landing – is the site of Indiana’s first V’s Barbershop, a place where guys can get shampoos, haircuts, oldfashioned hot lather straight-razor shaves, shoe shines and more. There’s no girlie salon or spa feel here. Just an hour, at least, of services geared solely for “successful men who value appearance and take pride in their grooming habits,” according to the website.

Co-owners Chad Renbarger and Bryan Wade, who are friends and Fishers neighbors, opened V’s Barbershop in July, with a grand opening on August 5. And it’s been a packed house ever since.

“When Bryan and I went into this business, we knew there was some risk, given the state of the economy and all,” said Renberger. “But we quickly found out that people will 22

pay for high quality services and the overall experience, which includes about 34 individual steps.”

The first V’s Barbershop opened in 1999 in Phoenix, Arizona. It was the brainchild of Jim Valenzuela (hence the “V”). His goal was to create a great old-time barbershop for himself and his son that would help him create memories for the two of them. His mantra was simple – make sure the visit to the barber was a relaxing pleasure and not a chore.

What he has created today is the nostalgia of yesteryear with a modern twist. So far, there are shops in Arizona, California, Texas, New Jersey, Mississippi, Washington and now one in Indiana.

“Today is my first time coming to V’s Barbershop,” said Justin Chesnut. “And I am definitely coming back. It’s close to my home, it’s tailored for men, there are things for the kids to do while their dads are in the chair and an owner is on site all the time. I like that.”

Renbarger says he grew up going with his dad to the barbershop and has fond memories of those experiences.

While not a barber himself, Renbarger understands the importance of hiring only the best and appreciates the diversity necessary so that all barbers know how to work with all types of hair and hairstyles. He says the key to a wonderful experience lies with the person providing your services.

The inside of V’s Barbershop is truly a step back in time, with its black and white checkered floors, solid wood cabinetry and collection of classic sports photos and memorabilia on the walls. The barbers all wear smocks and the wonderful scents of high-end men’s products fill the air.

But just to be fair, V’s Barbershop attracts women, too.

New Lawrence Principals Steer Schools in Right Direction

The word of the year in Lawrence Township Schools: Collaboration.

There’s no other word that comes closer to identifying the plan of action which the new principals of Lawrence North and Lawrence Central high schools have chosen to adopt.

Collaboration between the two leaders, between the schools, between teachers and administrators, between teachers and students, between educators and business leaders,….

The partnerships go on and on.

Both Brett Crousore, 38, and Thomas Oestreich, 34, were hired as principals in July. At the time of the interviews, neither knew which school he might lead. Crousore, who’s been at LN since the fall of 1996 and was the freshman principal since 2006, was tapped to replace his mentor, Steve Goeglein, who moved up to the administration office as executive director for secondary education. Oestreich replaced Kevin Brown, who’d been LC’s principal for one year and moved to Washington Township in July as director of human resources. Last year Oestreich was an assistant principal at North Central High School.

practically neighbors. “When we were given the task to come up with a draft for what the professional development and PLC (professional learning communities) time would look like, I walked around the corner to Brett’s house and we met in his basement for a few hours and started the work,” Oestreich said. “There’s probably not a day that goes by that I don’t pick up the phone to call Brett or he calls me.”

Topics of their discussions have ranged from staff development to test scores to student behavior. The intention is to have the two high schools “on the same page” in their academic philosophy, geared toward the 21st century.

“Yes, we’re two separate high schools,” Crousore said, citing programs such as athletics and music where the schools often are rivals. “But academically we’re one.”

The new leaders have made a commitment to work together “to take these high schools well into the 21st century.”

“What Tom and I have been able to do since Day 1 is to communicate with each other,” Crousore said.

Spotlight on Lawrence And academics are seeing a higher profile. A major push has been to reduce teachers’ non-teaching duties to maximize instructional time. As an example, each school has a new Tardy Room. If students are not in the classroom when the bell rings, they know they are to report to the Tardy Room where personnel other than teachers take care of recordkeeping.

start of class. This year the mandated before-class teacher time, Monday through Thursday, is an hour and five minutes before the new 8:50 a.m. start of class. Most of that time is spent in small teacher meetings, principally PLCs. An example might be the English 12 PLC, which brings together the teachers of that subject.

The idea is to encourage teacher collaboration on a greater scale. Last year PLCs met twice a month during the school day; teachers consigned their classes to substitute teachers to gain that common planning time. This year PLCs meet before school, several times each week.

That sharing encompasses more than lesson plans or instructional delivery modes. It provides time for teachers to also discuss the focal point of education, the students.

Oestreich said, “Students aren’t just numbers to us. We need to put a face to their education and show them that we care about their education. We’ll do everything we can to make them successful. And PLCs allow that to happen.”

Both touted what they see as their schools’ strengths – great teaching staffs, the desire as well as the ability to work together, a strong IB (International Baccalaureate) program, renowned programs in fields that include music, world languages, journalism and athletics. “And a phenomenal group of kids,” said Crousore.

The schools’ diversity is also a source of pride to the new leaders. “It’s special to be able to walk into a diverse setting and have a diverse conversation on every topic,” Crousore

Oestreich said that both schools would have had an ‘A’ grade according to the state evaluation system “if we had passed AYP (annual yearly progress). And if you look at AYP, not many schools in the state of Indiana are passing AYP with all the different sub-groups you have to pass.”

The number of students in AP (advanced placement) classes needs to increase; AP test scores need to rise. There’s a desire to raise graduation rates and attendance rates. Oestreich said, “We need to make sure all students are in class on time and are learning. We’re not going to improve test scores if our students are not in class.”

The result is a restructuring of the attendance office, providing time for the school to call parents in a more timely fashion about their children who are not in class.

Spotlight on Lawrence Calls to parents, in fact, have become a priority from not only the attendance office but also from teachers. They include calls about positive behavior and work as well as calls that signal a need for the student to improve.

Another negative is the public perception that Lawrence Township schools are not up to par. People talk about realtors pushing schools in Hamilton and Hancock counties rather than in Lawrence.

“We’re taking over two high schools that earned superior grade last year,” Crousore said. “Although a lot of people want to think we’re entering into two troubled high schools, we’re entering into two outstanding academic institutions.

We want to take good schools and make them great – make them nationally renowned for educating a diverse population at the highest level.”

Both said they need to do a better job of promoting the positives taking place in their buildings. They encourage people to talk to families who have sent their children through Lawrence Township schools. They invite community members “to come in and walk our hallways.”

There’s also a plan to better tie education to the working world. “We have to be educated about the skills our students need before they leave high school,” Crousore said. “Kids need to understand what’s going to be expected of them next.”

That means critical thinking. “One of our goals is to make our students critical thinkers,” Oestreich said. “If you have high expectations for your students, they are going to rise to those expectations. No matter what they decide to do, they’re going to be successful.

Education is the key to success.”

And that success, Crousore said, can be reached because “they want to be something.”

Lawrence Area Ultimate Frisbee Team Looking for Players

Although it has only existed for 43 years, Ultimate frisbee has become one of the “fastest growing sports in the U.S.,” as stated by the organization USA Ultimate.

Since the formation of the Ultimate Players Associate in 1979, college, women’s, mixed, masters and youth divisions have been introduced around the country—accumulating more than 30,000 members as of last year.

Ultimate has become popular among high school students, central Indiana included.

Though the season doesn’t officially begin until spring, the high-energy sport still keeps students in good physical shape throughout the year by participating in fall, winter and summer leagues. “Many sports teams like soccer, cross-country, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse and others use ultimate as a crosstraining tool”, said Coach John Rempel.

“It’s not an official intramural sport, but it’s more of a club sport,” said Administrative Captain David Miller a Lawrence North Freshman.

have enough interest to begin intramural play, but right now we’re working on building the Club team.”

The Lawrence area team calls themselves “Larry’s Revolution”. Coach John Rempel is a certified coach and chaperone through USA Ultimate. He has 30 years of playing and coaching experience at all levels including National & World Championships. “It’s a great pleasure to teach the sport of Ultimate to the next generation. Watching them grow athletically, personally and as teammates and competitors is extremely rewarding”, said Coach Rempel.

In June, the team participated in the USA Ultimate Indiana State High School Championships in Fishers, Indiana finishing in sixth place.

“We had a great time competing against teams from all around Indiana” Mt. Vernon Junior Co-Captain Andrew Noble said. “We also had the honor of having Lawrence North Senior Co-Captain Erin Rempel selected to the Indiana 1st Team All State High School Team. For being a first-year team, that’s very exciting. We would love to build on our momentum and compete for the Championship next season.”

Until the Spring season begins Larry’s Revolution will focus on practicing and recruiting strong teammates. Coach Rempel is eager to find walk-ons that are easily coachable and willing to learn.

Ultimate requires a great deal of athleticism and endurance. A lot of the Larry’s Revolution have some kind of athletic background. Some compete in tennis, lacrosse, basketball and football for area high schools and clubs.

For those unfamiliar with the game, Ultimate is played with two sevenplayer squads and a specialized 175-gram disc on a field similar to a football field. According to Coach Rempel, “Ultimate is a non-contact sport that emphasizes “Spirit of The Game”, which is essentially mutual respect for your teammates and most importantly your opponents.”

The objective of the game is to score and accumulate points by catching a pass in the opponent’s end zone.

“Teamwork and supporting one another is a major priority of Larry’s Revolution”, said CoCaptain Erin Rempel.

Hamilton Southeastern Foundation Delivers with Fitnessgram

The whirlwind of back to school is fading for most area families, and everyone is settling back into a daily routine.

For many students across the Hamilton Southeastern school district, that new routine will now include an innovative wellness program. Fitnessgram is a comprehensive fitness program that will be installed in every elementary, intermediate and junior high school in the district over the next three years and will include over 7,500 student participants.

District coordinator Karen Boyd explains, “Fitnessgram is a state-of-the-art, assessment focused approach to teaching healthy exercise and nutrition habits critical to reversing childhood obesity trends.” Unlike previous models, Fitnessgram is individualized and criterion based. The focus is on good health, not simple athleticism or a number on the scale.

The program could not have launched at a better time.

Of course, as with any innovative approach, the challenge is the expense. The last several years of reduced state allocations have left little remaining in education budgets. Enter the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation (HSSF). The foundation, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience for all students in the Hamilton Southeastern district. During the last year alone, the Foundation has invested over $55,000 in classroom grants and $75,000 in individual scholarships.

It’s a Birthday Party, Kids!

It used to be that a simple, homemade birthday cake and a few token streamers constituted a successful kid’s birthday party. Throw in a hand full of friends and a donkey without a tail, and you were done.

Today? Not so much. Birthday parties for children have been elevated to an entirely different level, with hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars being spent to celebrate this annual event. What’s a parent to do?

“Plan ahead,” says Heather Lapham Kuhn, Events Concierge at L’Evento Boutique. “The biggest reason people overspend on any celebration is last-minute planning. By giving yourself plenty of time to make smart choices and seek out bargains, you’ll save a bunch of money.”

Here are some other no-nonsense tips: Be Yourself. Don’t get sucked in to a keep-up-withthe-Joneses scenario. Stick to your guns when it comes to the budget, guest list and location. If you’re not the do-ityourself kind of person, there are plenty of options in the Indianapolis area that will bring the party to your home, or will host your special event at an offsite location.

“Having parties at home, with family and friends gathering together to celebrate, has become more popular again,” says Amanda Henson, Best Fun, Inc. “But it can also be lots of pressure. Having someone at the party to entertain the kids, and even adults, is a good idea as it takes that pressure off and allows everyone to have fun.”

Have a Back Up Plan. If your party is going to be outdoors, make sure you have an alternative date in mind or a location available should the weather not cooperate.

Combine Celebrations. Many party vendors and businesses offer better deals for larger guest lists.

Consider holding one big bash on a neutral date for two or more children at the same time.

“We actually collected a truck load full of donations, and we took Camden with us to deliver them,” Lori says.

“He won’t remember it now, but he will understand it as he gets older, as we’re going to do the same thing each year.”

Be Creative. Pop culture, television shows, books and trends are always a good place to start for inspiration.

Here are just a few examples of clever party ideas: • Letterboxing – Combine this popular activity with a round of pizzas at home and a gift bag filled with stamps, pens and a notebook. Check out letterboxing. org for inspiration.

• Toddlers & Tiaras – One local group of tweens gathered for a slumber party and an all-out spoof on this television series. While poking fun at kid pageants, guests donned outlandish hairstyles and exaggerated make-up while competing for titles like Worst Costume and Funniest Routine.

• 39 Clues – This popular book series lends itself to scavenger hunts, endless activities and exotic locales.

As several years rolled by, “he was having more and more trouble,” said Blaylock, and then his troubles started spilling into other areas of his life. He enjoyed playing soccer but didn’t understand what the coach wanted from him and eventually gave up the game, and his overall attitude began to reflect his lack of confidence and poor self-image.

“He started feeling like he was a stupid kid who was never going to be anything,” his mother said. “We really felt like if we didn’t figure it out soon, we were going to lose him.

He was just going to give up.”

Blaylock and her husband pulled Nick out of school and began homeschooling through the Hoosier Academy, but that didn’t help the situation and Nick and his parents’ frustration level continued to rise.

Finally, someone recommended LearningRx Indianapolis in the Kroger plaza at 79th and Fall Creek in Geist, and,

after assessment testing, Nick was enrolled in the cognitive training center’s ReadRx program.

It turned out that Nick was having difficulty processing information he heard. “He just wasn’t holding on to the material,” Blaylock explained. “He wasn’t processing the words fast enough.”

This could be considered a form of auditory dyslexia.

According to Lynne McCauley, Executive Director of LearningRx Indianapolis, “Many people associate reading issues with dyslexia, or flipping of letters, but it can often be more subtle and complex, and take on different forms.

Dyslexia – at its root – means trouble (‘dys’) with reading (‘lexia’).

“Generally people have trouble with either the sound part of reading – they are dysphonetic, or the visual part of reading – they are dysdeidetic. They can also be a combination of both, they are dysphoneidetic, they have trouble correctly perceiving or associating the sounds and the letters.”

In Nick’s case, he was having trouble with auditory processing, “the ability to analyze, synthesize, segment and blend sounds,” according to McCauley. “As we talk, read and write, we are analyzing, segmenting and synthesizing sounds into words, thoughts and ideas. Inaccuracies or inefficiencies in making sense of this information affects reading, writing, comprehension and spelling.”

With October being Dyslexia Awareness Month, now is a good time to point out that this disorder is quite common.

According to the National Institute of Health, it is estimated that up to 15 percent of the population has dyslexia in one form or another.

How does that translate in Indiana schools and beyond?

McCauley said, “According to the 2009 Nation’s Report Card, 59 percent of Indiana fourth graders do not read at a proficient level. By eighth grade 66 percent of our students are not proficient in reading. That is a crisis and unacceptable. If we don’t correct this problem soon, it will be difficult for our students to compete locally, nationally or globally for jobs. There are long-term consequences for all of us if this continues.”

She’s right. According to Future Works (2005), 960,000 to 1.2 million employed Hoosiers have literacy skills below the minimum standard required for successful employment.

McCauley explained, “Reading comprehension and retention can be greatly affected by an individual’s phonemic awareness. At a conscious level, we can typically only process one or two things at a time; everything else needs to move to the subconscious.

What Dyslexia Looks Like...

Translation: “David took the lid off the peanut butter jar. He knew he wasn’t supposed to eat before dinner, but he placed a big glob of peanut butter on his finger and quickly put it in his mouth.”

While this is an extreme example, students who struggle to read may not recognize that they are making mistakes because this is their reality, what their brains perceive they are reading.

“If I am spending most of my conscious resources making sense of letter/sound combinations, I have very few conscious resources left over to be able to evaluate, comprehend or retain what I just read,” she said.

All of this can lead children like Nick to throw their hands up in surrender, resigning them to an adulthood of continued struggle, but with programs like those offered through LearningRx, there is hope.

Blaylock said that after her son’s first session in the ReadRx program, “It was like a weight was lifted, and as the weeks went on he started feeling so much better about himself.

“The program taught him how to figure things out in his head,” she said.

Blaylock is happy to report that her son, who is an eighth-grader this year, is back in school and once again playing soccer.

A Haunting We Will Go — to the Children’s Museum!

The Children’s Museum is gearing up for another haunting season with the 48th annual Haunted House event! It is the museum’s largest annual fundraiser and largest volunteer effort – with many of those volunteers coming from the Giest, Fishers and the Carmel areas!

“We are excited about this year Haunted House and hoping for another big success!” says In-Kind Sponsorhip Co-Chair and Geist resident Melissa Duffy.

Duffy is referring to last year’s record breaking season where more than 62,000 visited the Haunted House and generated more than a half a million dollars for the Children’s Museum.

Last year’s Haunted House, which was led by two Geist residents Melanie Fitzgerald and Christy Becker, gained national attention for being named one of the top ten haunted housed in the U.S, by Rand McNally online.

“I don’t know how we manage to top ourselves year after year, but we do!” says last year’s Co-Chair Christy Becker.

“We tapped into the vampire craze that is big with kids now and it gave us a great mascot, too,” says this year’s Haunted House co-Chair Amy Clark.

There’s a total of about 100 Guild members who are a very dedicated group of volunteers who carefully design, build and run the Haunted House each year.

In Good Spirits Takes Roost in Fishers

A priest, a pastor, and a business owner walk into a restaurant. It sounds like the start of a good joke, right? Well it is no joke, but rather something quite interesting. Three of the most respected men in the greater Fishers community have teamed up to create a weekly event that is turning some heads.

Father Phil Bowers, Pastor Joe Freeman, and local restaurant owner Ed Sahm are hosting an event called “In Good Spirits.” This event allows individuals who have an interest in having a personal life & spiritual dialogue, raise a glass, and even grab a light bite to eat—all while engaging in conversation that they may never have had elsewhere. These three founding fathers have a combined community contribution of over 75 years. They have engaged in countless spirited conversations independent of one another. Their impact on the area is difficult to quantify, but undeniable. This is one more example of all they have given.

“Our goal is to create a place where anyone can feel comfortable to ask life-size questions in a welcoming and interactive way,” says Pastor Joe. “This event is not about recruitment to some church, it is about honest dialogue.”

He will go on to share enthusiasm for an idea formed over a dinner conversation about bringing people freedom for knowledge within their own comfort zone.

For many, this standing Tuesday evening option from 8-9:30 PM at the Roost may fit into schedules better than traditional offerings. Ironically, there is no required affiliation, sign up sheets, or offering taken; it is a complete give back. Even the snacks are modestly priced and plentiful. It is simply a means for those with some spiritual curiosity to meet with other Fishers/Geist residence in a way that works well for them and allow them to ask the things they have always quietly pondered. Father Phil states, “If everybody is created in the Image of God, we all learn so much just looking around.”

For many who attended the inaugural event from across the community, the dialogue was a pleasant surprise. The staff kept busy as the kick off was well attended with over 70 people enjoying the evening. Not a seat in the place went empty, yet it was still conducive to this type of conversation.

Discussion ranged from the personal to philosophical. There were no sports conflicts, no cell phones, or agendas; just a beer, soda, or snack and some good company that will no doubt grow “In Good Spirits” weekly.

Indiana Nitro went 5-0 during pool play, besting teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Illinois. They outscored their opponents 114-8 during pool play to earn the #2 seed. The team then proceeded to beat the St. Louis Sox in the quarter finals and the Long Island (NY) Inferno in the semi-finals before falling in the Championship game.

All 11 players for Nitro homered during the week, and the team pitched two no-hitters as well, finishing their season with a 40-15 record. Congrats to Indiana Nitro!

Corpse Manor

A Haunting Good Time Like No Other

If you’re looking for a good scare on Halloween, there’s a new haunted house in town. But be warned, they take their scares seriously.

The Corpse Manor opens this month in the Post Road Recreation Center just south of Pendleton Pike. But this is more than a haunted house put together just for Halloween.

This is a professional theatrical production featuring real actors and actresses working for one common goal – to SCARE you. There are three haunted attractions in one,

each with their own unique theme and staff. There’s the Corpse Manor – an old manor built on a graveyard with its foundation made of dispirited tombstones. You have the chance to visit the home of Lord Henry Calvert, who has been dealing with strange happenings at his manor since the day he moved in.

You may experience some of those strange happenings when you visit, and you may find that some of the spirits from the dead souls have never left! You be the judge. The floors are uneven, the rooms are in disarray and the hallways are very narrow … so there’s not much room to get away when something creepy comes at you – and yes, something creepy will!

There’s also an attraction called Night Shadows, which is simply a play on our biggest fear – fear of the dark.

A haunted trail awaits visitors next door called Sinister Woods – a wooded lot with no place to hide.

Owners Dan Justus and Bob Kints have traveled the country checking out some of the best haunted houses and are excited to open the Post Road attraction. “It is actually a year
