ASK THE GEIST DECK AND DOCK EXPERTS

A GENERATIONAL UPGRADE FOR GEIST DECKS

CHRIS REED OF CREED IMPROVEMENTS INTRODUCES OWENS CORNING® LUMBER

When it comes to outdoor living in the Geist area, decks are more than just structures, they’re gathering spaces where families host summer cookouts, watch sunsets over the water, and create lasting memories. But as many homeowners know, traditional wood construction comes with a cost beyond the initial build: maintenance, repairs, and eventual replacement.

Chris Reed, owner of Creed Improvements, wants homeowners to know there’s a better option. Reed is educating the community about a revolutionary product called Owens Corning® Lumber (OC™ Lumber) — a composite structural lumber designed to outperform traditional treated wood in nearly every category.

“Traditional wood decks rot over time,” Reed explains. “You’ll have to rehab them every 15 to 30 years and

eventually replace them altogether. OC™ Lumber is composite lumber that replaces traditional treated lumber. The major advantages are that it’s completely submergible and unharmed by ultraviolet (UV) rays.”

For homeowners along Geist Reservoir, where moisture exposure is constant, that durability is a game changer. Where a traditional deck might last 20 to 30 years, even with regular maintenance, sealing and repairs a deck built with OC™ Lumber could last more than 100 years with very minimal upkeep.

“That longevity changes the entire conversation,” Reed says. “It’s truly a generational-type opportunity.”

TRUSTED LOCAL EXPERTISE

For more than a decade, Creed Improvements

has built a strong reputation throughout the Geist community for quality craftsmanship and thoughtful design. Reed and his team provide on-site consultations and customized design services to help homeowners reimagine their outdoor spaces with materials built to last.

For those considering a deck renovation, “This isn’t just another product,” Reed says. “It’s a smarter way to build for the future.”

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

HOMETOWN WINDOW AND DOOR COMPANY

With spring weather and storms on the horizon, homeowners may be thinking about the cost and hassle of replacing windows. Hometown Window and Door Company is a locally owned business that provides central Indiana residents with a wide range of exterior household services.

The company is an authorized dealer of Andersen products, the largest window and door manufacturer in North America.

“Andersen is a household name. It was founded the same year that Ford was founded, in 1903. People associate Andersen with quality and with a product that lasts,” says Udi Abdelhak, Hometown sales manager. “For a normal dealership, the focus is on the product. We focus on the full-service residential replacement model. We spend most of our time and attention on measuring, ordering, installing, warranting and servicing every window that we sell. Our focus is unique for an Andersen dealer.”

Hometown Window and Door Company also services patio doors and entry doors. The company offers full custom entry doors with dozens of wood grains, stains, paints and configurations, and is expanding its roofing and siding lines.

“We do a lot of out-of-the-box work, like four-seasons rooms, conversions to sunrooms and home add-ons. We can pretty much say ‘yes’ to any customer on anything exterior they want to do,” Abdelhak says.

In addition to residential homes, Hometown Window and Door Company updated the windows in the Hamilton County Courthouse last year and will work on the Henry County Courthouse in New Castle in 2026.

“There are historic districts and homeowners associations where it’s difficult to get a window approved, and that’s why having access to all five Andersen window lines is helpful to get the right fit for any specific situation,” Abdelhak says.

These include the energy-efficient A-series window with a fiberglass exterior sash, the customizable E-series, which can be made as large as 8-by-10 feet, and the Fibrex 100 series window, which features a compositebased extruded frame and offers an alternative to vinyl windows.

Abdelhak advises that vinyl windows often last only five to 10 years, as the plastic material expands and contracts with seasonal temperature changes. Even wooden frames are not immune and can pull away from the wall and begin leaking air. In addition to lowering utility bills, new windows can also provide protection from the sun.

“Ultraviolet rays that pass through windows can damage carpet, flooring, furniture and art, and can heat up a room. Andersen frames and glass block more than 98% of harmful UV rays that come in through the

window,” he says.

Homeowners may think they need to replace all of their windows at once for them to match, but that is often not the case. Abdelhak says that nine times out of 10, they can match existing windows so customers don’t have to replace anything unnecessarily.

“We are a unique, small business out of Hamilton County. We don’t play games with pricing, and we don’t show 10 different prices and then discount heavily to get people’s business. We have expectations from Andersen. It’s difficult to obtain a dealership. They have high standards. We have to sell and install with morality,” he says.

The company will have representatives at the Flower and Patio Show in Indianapolis, as well as the Indiana Peony Festival in Noblesville, to answer questions.

Hometown Window and Door Company is currently running a promotion offering 15 months of zero-percent financing, as well as buy four windows, get two free. For more information, visit hometownwindowteam. com or call 317-659-6293.

TRANSITIONING TO SENIOR LIVING?

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT.

Our life paths are lined with many milestones — from saying our first words to being called “Grandma” and “Grandpa.” While some life changes are exciting, they can also be hard. Moving into senior living can be particularly daunting to older loved ones, as it can bring up a myriad of emotions.

The smoothness of this transition often lies in the initial approach to it. Here are some tips on how to broach the sensitive subject of senior living.

Start the conversation early: Of course, it’s helpful to stay mindful of age-related changes, such as home isolation, memory issues, injuries, etc. Ideally, though, moving into a senior living community should be an act of prevention rather than an emergency response. So, talk to your loved ones sooner rather than later — preferably in person for a more comforting discussion than digital communication can provide.

Bring up the topic organically: Gently plant seeds so the idea of senior living grows positively in their mind. If they’re cooking dinner, for example, mention the dining room and socialization they could enjoy at the nearby senior living community. Talking over time will make the conversation feel less like an intervention and more like a natural, supportive dialogue.

Lead with empathy: If we’re not careful, talking to loved ones about moving may make them feel like we’re judging their current lifestyle. Remind them that you understand their needs and concerns. While moving can be overwhelming, you can help them realize the worries they’ll be able to let go of in the process.

Listen in a loving manner: This helps your loved one feel like they’re not just following you but walking hand in hand with you toward a new way of life. You’re a team.

Reframe senior living as alternative independence: It’s important to emphasize that this move isn’t a matter of closing one door but rather opening another one. For instance, instead of doing household chores, your loved one could devote more time to a hobby. Instead of driving across town for a hair appointment, they could find a salon just down the hall. Remind them how their choices are expanding and their level of independence is increasing.

For more information, check out the CarDon Senior Resource Hub at www.CarDon.us or scan the QR code, where you will find in-depth video discussions featuring industry experts speaking on a variety of age-related topics, including senior living options, financial aid, memory care and more.

HOW TO NAVIGATE THE HOME MORTGAGE PROCESS — With Clarity, Speed, & Confidence

Buying a home is one of the biggest financial decisions you will ever make. Yet for many buyers, the mortgage process feels confusing, overwhelming, and filled with uncertainty. Rates change. Advice conflicts. Timelines matter more than ever.

That’s where working with the right mortgage professional makes all the difference.

My role as a mortgage lender isn’t just to get you a loan — it’s to guide you through the entire home financing journey with clarity, confidence, and certainty, so you can make smart decisions and reach the closing table on time.

Here’s how I help you navigate every step.

UNDERSTANDING YOU BEFORE THE NUMBERS

Every borrower — and every loan — is unique. Before we ever talk about interest rates or loan programs, I take time to understand you.

Are you a first-time homebuyer? Relocating to the Geist or Fishers area? Trying to keep your monthly payment conservative, or maximize long-term flexibility?

Too often, buyers are given one-size-fits-all advice. I take an education-first approach. I walk you through how different loan options impact your monthly payment, cash flow, upfront costs, and long-term goals—not just the rate you see advertised online.

When you understand your options clearly, you make better decisions. And better decisions lead to confident homeownership.

CLEAR, ACCURATE PRE-APPROVAL — NOT GUESSWORK

A strong pre-approval is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — steps in the home-buying process.

I provide fully reviewed, accurate pre-approvals. Not rushed letters based on incomplete information. I carefully review income, assets, credit, and loan structure upfront so there are no surprises later.

This protects you. It strengthens your offer. And it gives Realtors confidence that your deal will close.

In competitive markets like ours, that level of preparation can be the difference between winning and losing the home you love.

MATCHING YOU WITH THE RIGHT LOAN PROGRAM

There is no single “best” mortgage — only the right mortgage for you.

I guide buyers through a full range of loan options, including conventional, FHA, VA for eligible Veterans, USDA, jumbo financing, and down payment assistance programs.

My job is to explain each option in plain language. I show you how each program impacts your monthly payment, your cash to close, and your long-term financial position. Together, we choose a strategy that fits your life today—and still makes sense years from now.

PROACTIVE COMMUNICATION — SO YOU’RE NEVER GUESSING

One of the biggest complaints buyers have about the mortgage process is poor communication. They don’t know what’s happening, what’s next, or who to ask.

THAT’S NOT HOW I OPERATE.

From application to closing, I stay proactively involved. You’ll always know:

• What stage your loan is in

• What’s needed next

• That your timeline is being protected

Clear communication reduces stress and keeps transactions moving smoothly. When questions arise, you can call or text me directly and get real answers.

NAVIGATING ALL THE WAY TO CLOSING — AND BEYOND

As your loan moves through underwriting, appraisal, and final approval, details matter. Deadlines matter. Coordination matters. I work closely with Realtors, title companies, and everyone involved to ensure conditions are handled efficiently, closing dates are protected, and you’re fully prepared for what to expect. My goal is simple: no last-minute surprises and no missed deadlines.

And for me, the relationship doesn’t end at the closing table. After closing, I remain your long-term mortgage resource. Whether you have questions about servicing, want to explore refinancing opportunities, or experience life changes that affect your goals, I’m here. Many of my clients return years later—or refer friends and family — because they know they can always reach me for honest guidance.

The mortgage process doesn’t have to feel stressful or confusing. With the right preparation and communication, it can be straightforward, efficient, and empowering.

If you’re buying a home and want a lender who takes the time to explain, communicates clearly, and protects your timeline, I would be honored to help.

Call or text me anytime at 317-439-4495. Learn more or get started at CoriDrudge.com.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS

CHRIS SCHULHOF & A QUARTER CENTURY OF LEADERSHIP IN GEIST REAL ESTATE

For more than 25 years, the Geist waterfront and surrounding northeast Indianapolis communities have evolved into some of the area’s most desirable places to live. Architectural styles have shifted, property values have climbed, and market cycles have come and gone. Through it all, one constant has remained: Chris Schulhof.

Now celebrating his 25th year as a real estate professional, Schulhof has become synonymous with experience, discretion and long-term thinking in the Geist and Fishers markets. He built his reputation not on volume alone, but on relationships that now span generations.

“I never wanted to be the agent selling a thousand homes a year,” Schulhof says. “My goal has always been to do a really good job for the clients I work with and to be the person they call whenever they have a real estate question.”

That mindset — part adviser, part strategist — has quietly positioned Schulhof as one of the area’s most trusted real estate leaders.

A MARKET EXPERT WITH A LONG VIEW

Few professionals understand the Geist market as intimately as Schulhof. He has sold more than 3,000 homes over the course of his career, giving him not only historical knowledge of neighborhoods and pricing, but a deep database of past clients who continue to return.

“Real estate today looks very different from what it did even five years ago,” he says. “Interest rates, buyer expectations, inventory — it’s all shifted. My role is to help clients understand those changes long before they’re ready to move.”

That long-view approach is central to Schulhof’s philosophy. He frequently begins working with sellers a year or more before a home ever hits the market. Those early conversations focus on timing, presentation, targeted improvements and market conditions, all with one objective: helping clients maximize what they take away from the transaction.

“Bottom line,” Schulhof says, “it’s about how much a client puts in their pocket at the end of the day.”

STRATEGY BEFORE THE SIGN GOES IN THE YARD

In an industry often driven by speed, Schulhof’s emphasis on preparation sets him apart. Luxury transactions, he believes, rarely happen by accident.

Staging decisions, renovation investments, pricing strategy and market cycles are all evaluated well in advance. Just as important is understanding the client’s broader financial picture and long-term goals.

“If someone buys a house from me and two months later they call and say, ‘Chris, something happened. We have to sell,’ I want to be able to get them out of that house without it hurting,” he says. “That means making smart decisions on the front end.”

That client-first mentality extends even to compensation. Schulhof is candid about prioritizing relationships over short-term commission, confident that doing right by clients always pays dividends in the long run.

“If you put the client first, the money will

come,” he says. “If you put the money first, you won’t have clients in the future.”

BOUTIQUE BY DESIGN

When Schulhof opened his office along Fall Creek Road, growth for growth’s sake was never the goal. Instead, he envisioned a boutique operation — small, intentional and deeply personal.

“I wanted an environment where clients are treated like family,” he says.

That philosophy continues today through a close-knit team that includes Joy Harris, Todd Byczek and Andrea Martin. Together, they share a commitment to discretion, white-glove service and long-term relationships.

The result is a practice that often serves entire families over decades. Schulhof has helped parents sell homes, represented their children as first-time buyers and, in many cases, guided those same clients through multiple stages of life.

“There’s something incredibly rewarding about that,” he says. “You’re not just selling homes. You’re being trusted with major life transitions.”

INNOVATION ROOTED IN EXPERIENCE

While Schulhof’s approach is grounded in tradition and trust, he is far from static. One of the most distinctive offerings of his firm is a buyout program rarely seen in the local market.

In certain situations, Schulhof will purchase a buyer’s existing home to remove contingencies and allow a transaction to move forward, sometimes even buying a third party’s home to ensure his client’s deal closes.

“It’s about removing obstacles,” he says. “Most agents can’t, or won’t, do that. But if it’s the right solution for the client, we find a way.”

That willingness to think creatively has helped Schulhof navigate even the most volatile markets, including the post-2020 boom and subsequent slowdown.

“We’ve always kept our heads down and focused on doing our jobs,” he says. “I don’t worry much about what the media says. We focus on our clients.”

BEYOND RESIDENTIAL

While residential real estate remains the foundation of his practice, Schulhof’s expertise has expanded into commercial

transactions and land development, areas where experience and negotiation skill are critical.

Among recent highlights, Schulhof assisted California-based 1Elevan Biopharmaceutical with its relocation to Fishers, securing a 133,000-square-foot facility and helping obtain a 10-year tax abatement. He also represented Legacy Living in the acquisition of land for a planned assisted-living community near Del Webb, addressing the growing demand for senior housing in Hamilton County.

In McCordsville, Schulhof currently has 90 acres under contract with Drees Homes for a new upscale residential development, another project shaping the future of northeast Indianapolis.

“These projects go beyond individual transactions,” he says. “They’re about helping communities grow thoughtfully.”

A VISIBLE PRESENCE, A PURPOSEFUL BRAND

Schulhof’s brand is intentionally understated yet unmistakable. His office signage, long-standing presence along Fall Creek Road and distinctive vehicles have made him a recognizable figure in the community for years.

Recently, that visibility took on new meaning. Schulhof became a corporate sponsor of The Humane Society for Hamilton County, featuring adoptable dogs on his branded vehicles — an initiative inspired by his wife and embraced by the community.

“It resonates,” he says. “People notice.”

A LEGACY BUILT ON TRUST

As he looks ahead, Schulhof remains focused on continuity, ensuring that the values that have shaped his career endure.

That vision is reflected in the formal branding of his group as The IndyPlace Team, a name that represents a single, trusted destination for every stage of a client’s real estate journey, from first homes to lakefront estates to development opportunities.

When asked what he hopes his legacy will be, Schulhof doesn’t hesitate. “That I always put the client first,” he says. “That I positioned families well. That I took care of people.”

In a market defined by prestige, complexity and constant change, Chris Schulhof has proven that experience and integrity still matter.

And in Geist real estate, they always will.

March Comfort Classic Irish Shepherd’s Pie

As winter lingers and early spring hints at warmer days ahead, March is the perfect time to lean into cozy, hearty meals that bring people together. Shepherd’s Pie is one of those timeless dishes — simple, satisfying, and deeply comforting. Traditionally rooted in Irish kitchens, this classic has become a family favorite across the Midwest, especially on cool evenings when comfort food feels most welcome.

At its heart, Shepherd’s Pie is a layered dish that balances savory ground meat, vegetables, and creamy mashed potatoes baked until golden. While purists might argue about lamb versus beef, this version embraces accessibility and flavor, making it easy to prepare with ingredients you likely already have on hand.

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE FILLING:

• 1 lb ground beef or lamb

• 1 small onion, diced

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 2 tablespoons tomato paste

• 1 cup beef broth

• 1 cup frozen peas and carrots

• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

• 1 teaspoon dried thyme

• Salt and pepper to taste

FOR THE MASHED POTATOES:

• 2 lbs russet or Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cubed

• 4 tablespoons butter

• ½ cup milk or cream

• Salt to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground meat until browned. Add the diced onion and garlic, cooking until softened and fragrant. Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper, allowing the flavors to meld. Pour in the beef broth and simmer for several minutes until slightly thickened. Fold in the peas and carrots, then transfer the mixture to a baking dish.

While the filling simmers, boil the potatoes in salted water until fork-tender. Drain and mash with butter, milk, and salt until smooth and creamy.

Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the meat mixture, using a fork to create texture on top. Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is lightly golden and the filling is bubbling around the edges.

A PERFECT MARCH MEAL

Shepherd’s Pie is ideal for early spring gatherings — hearty enough for chilly nights yet simple enough for busy schedules. It’s also a fantastic make-ahead dish, reheating beautifully for leftovers the next day. Serve it with a crisp green salad or warm bread, and you’ve got a comforting meal that feels like home.

As we move toward longer days and brighter evenings, this classic reminds us that some of the best meals are rooted in tradition — and shared around the table.

When Jim Weander and his wife, Susan, moved to the Geist area 18 months ago, there was one place that immediately felt right: Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill.

“It was the first place we went to,” he recalls. “We immediately fell into the local vibe. The only thing missing was live music to make it home.”

Today, that missing piece has been filled — not just for him, but for the growing community of regulars who now gather to hear him play. Thanks to the support of Eddy’s owners, Dianna and Ryan, what started as a fresh start in a new state has become a full-circle musical homecoming.

After spending 25 years playing music in Hawaii, stepping back into the local music scene in Indiana might have felt intimidating. Instead, it felt natural.

“Since I just started back into the music scene after 25 years playing in Hawaii, I feel like ‘home,’ aka Eddy’s, was the perfect place to

start,” he says.

His time in Hawaii shaped him into a versatile performer. In a tourism-driven environment where audiences changed nightly, adaptability wasn’t optional — it was essential. One evening might call for traditional Hawaiian melodies, while the next demanded classic rock, country or island-inspired covers.

“You had to cover everything,” he explains. “Dust the guitar with a little of this and a little of that and watch the crowd for what works.”

That experience prepared him well for playing in Geist. He now arrives at each show with a “potential set list” of 60 to 80 songs, ready to pivot depending on the mood in the room. Reading the crowd has become second nature, and at Eddy’s, the crowd often rewards that attentiveness.

One of his favorite moments happened when he noticed a young man — his neighbor’s son in his 20s — quietly mouthing every word to a song he was playing.

“That showed me I was reaching him and his parents,” he says. “That meant a lot.”

Of course, not all moments are quiet ones. “You can’t beat a table of six ladies jumping up to dance and dragging everyone in arm’s reach to join in,” he adds with a laugh.

Those spontaneous bursts of energy are part of what make neighborhood venues special. Unlike tourist hot spots, places like Eddy’s are built on familiarity. Faces return. Conversations continue. Music becomes shared memory.

Still, breaking into a new music scene wasn’t without its challenges. In Hawaii, he says, “everyone knew everyone that played.” In Indiana, he arrived as a stranger in a scene where many performers already had established relationships and booking agents.

“It was a little daunting,” he admits.

But the local music community proved welcoming. Musicians like Orvis Kirkland, of Orvis and Friends and Flying Toasters, invited him to sit in during performances, giving him a chance to experience the neighborhood scene from behind the microphone.

“That friendship built my confidence to ask to play at different venues,” he says.

Dan Stackpoole at Portofino was the first to give him a shot locally. Soon after, Dianna Miller opened the doors at Eddy’s — bringing his story full circle to the very place that first felt like home.

His next performance at Eddy’s is scheduled for March 5, and he’s especially looking forward to seeing familiar faces. “Shout out to Bridgewater!” he adds, recognizing the neighbors who have become loyal supporters.

Beyond local shows, music remains woven into his everyday life. He and his wife travel in their 38-foot motorhome, often finding themselves at campgrounds and wineries across the country — places where, inevitably, a guitar comes out and a crowd gathers.

“I love playing at private parties where I can mingle with the crowd,” he says. Whether at Eddy’s, a backyard gathering or a campground under the stars, the goal remains the same: connection.

And in Geist, he’s found exactly that — one song at a time.

Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill is the place to be on Thursday nights for live music.

Join us on February 12th and 19th as local favorite Ethan Olvey takes the stage. Known for his soulful vibe, great covers, and wide range of music genres, Ethan puts his spin on country classics, rock and modern pop. Ethan plays the perfect soundtrack for dinner, drinks, and time with friends. Enjoy Eddy’s welcoming atmosphere, great food, and live local music right in the heart of the Geist community. MSD OF LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP LAUNCHES NEW HIGH-ABILITY KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM

The Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township is proud to introduce a new High-Ability Kindergarten Program beginning with the 2026-2027 school year and intentionally designed to meet the advanced learning needs of the youngest learners. This initiative reflects the district’s commitment to excellence in early childhood and high-quality instruction that ensures all students are challenged and supported from their first day of school.

The High-Ability Kindergarten Program, offered at Crestview Elementary and Oaklandon Elementary, will offer enriched opportunities beyond the core curriculum, fostering critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration. Through targeted, research-based learning

experiences, students identified for the program will engage in extension activities that deepen understanding, stimulate curiosity, and accelerate academic growth.

“We recognize that learners enter school with diverse strengths,” says Dr. Shawn A. Smith, Superintendent of Schools. “By introducing an advanced pathway at the kindergarten level, we are providing learners with early opportunities to thrive while building a strong foundation for future success.”

The Kindergarten High-Ability Program integrates classroom exploration with individualized support, encouraging students to ask questions, explore concepts in depth, and develop a love for learning.

Teachers receive specialized professional development to implement instruction that aligns with high-ability best practices.

Though the preliminary interest form for 2026-2027 is now closed, those wishing to learn more about the program should contact the Office of Early Childhood at 317-423-8363. The MSD of Lawrence Township enrolls Kindergarten students who are five years of age by October 1.

With the launch of this new initiative, MSD of Lawrence Township continues to strengthen its reputation for innovative programming that prepares every student for a lifetime of achievement.

For Mt. Vernon senior Sebastian Sprague, balancing academics, athletics and community involvement isn’t about perfection — it’s about discipline, growth and consistently striving to be better.

“School is very important to me,” Sebastian says. “I try my best to cut out distractions and prioritize the important things.”

That focus has become the foundation of his success. By staying ahead on classwork, he creates the flexibility needed to train at a high level. Once school and workouts are complete, he makes time to give back to others. While he admits time management is always a work in progress, Sebastian approaches it the same way he approaches competition — with intention.

“I’m never perfect at it,” he says, “but it’s something I’m always working on so I can perform to the best of my ability.”

That mindset has shaped him into one of Mt. Vernon’s standout student-athletes.

Sebastian credits much of his development to the coaches, teachers and family members who have guided him along the way. His coaches push him daily, challenging him to raise his standards and refine the details. Among them is someone who has had a particularly

meaningful influence — his dad.

“My dad being one of my coaches helps me understand the importance of the little things,” Sebastian explains. “Those details show me how to do the work, but I’m the one who has to push myself and stay disciplined every day.”

It’s a lesson that extends beyond the track. While support systems provide encouragement and guidance, Sebastian understands that true growth comes from internal drive. That self-discipline has carried him through both triumph and adversity.

One of the most defining chapters of his high school career came after undergoing open-heart surgery during his sophomore year. For many athletes, such a setback could be career-altering. For Sebastian, it became a turning point.

During his junior year, he returned to competition and achieved one of the most rewarding moments of his athletic career — earning All-State honors in four events.

“That experience taught me patience, resilience and gratitude,” he says. “It made every achievement feel more meaningful.”

He also made difficult decisions along the way, narrowing his focus to track to give himself the best opportunity to succeed. The commitment paid off. Being able to

return, contribute to his team and represent Mt. Vernon at the highest level is something he says he will always be proud of.

Beyond academics and athletics, Sebastian places a strong emphasis on community involvement. As a member of the National Honor Society, he has volunteered with various organizations, but one experience stands out in particular: mentoring a fourthgrade boys basketball team.

Working with younger athletes has given him a new perspective on leadership.

“That experience has taught me that everyone has a different skill set and that one approach doesn’t work for everyone,” he says. “It’s reminded me that I can always keep improving in different areas of my life.”

Helping others develop their skills has reinforced lessons he’s learned himself — patience, adaptability and the importance of

Look

meeting people where they are.

Looking ahead, Sebastian’s journey is set to continue at the Division I level. He has committed to DePaul University in Chicago, where he will compete in track while studying business.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to live in Chicago, challenge myself academically and compete at the Division I level,” he says. “It’s a great fit for me both academically and athletically.”

From overcoming major health challenges to earning All-State honors and mentoring the next generation, Sebastian Sprague’s high school career reflects resilience, discipline and heart. As he prepares to take the next step, one thing is certain: The lessons he’s learned at Mt. Vernon will continue to guide him — on the track, in the classroom and in the community.
