ILLUMINATED GLASS RAILING SOLUTIONS FOR A CLEARER VIEW

One of the most common concerns for homeowners on waterfront properties or with any natural setting is the obstructed view that most rails create. Although a progression of rail types has allowed for visual improvements through the years, most still require vertical posts and horizontal components.

IG Railing® (Illuminated Glass Railing) offers a truly frameless and post-less glass rail system that includes optional built-in lighting. With IG Railing, when you’re looking through your picture window, accordion doors or French doors, you’ve got a 100% clear view. Visually, it’s almost like there is no rail at all.

The low-iron glass allows for clearer views and light distribution through the panels at night. The remote control or Bluetooth technology allows for multiple color options and dimming. The hardware components have a minimal visual impact and are available in a polished stainless steel or matte black finish.

Lastly, the sides of this deck include Westbury’s VertiCable handrail, which features vertical cables to minimize the obstruction of the balusters. Additionally, we added the cocktail rail, which really finished it off. The usage of the two different handrails helped the client stay within their budget. Now everyone boating at night on Geist Reservoir will be able to tell which deck has that Big Deck Energy.

ON-TRACK EDUCATION

MOTORSPORT TECHNICAL SCHOOL OPENS FIRST U.S. CAMPUS IN INDY

Even though most kids are on summer break, a new school is just getting on track. Motorsport Technical School (MTS) recently opened its first U.S. campus on Indianapolis’ northwest side near 62nd and Guion.

It’s a fitting location, given that the city is known as the “Racing Capital of the World.”

“Obviously, with Indy’s nickname, we knew there would already be an ingrained motorsports culture,” says MTS Chief Operating Officer Rossella Manfrinato. “Indy is already well-known in our native Italy. We all know the history behind the Indy 500.”

Manfrinato says they selected the area near 62nd and Guion for its proximity to racing team offices like Conquest, McLaren, Chip Ganassi Racing, Andretti and Ed Carpenter Racing, to name a few.

Founded in Monza, Italy — known as the “Temple of Speed” — MTS boasts a 90%+

placement rate for racing mechanics and data analysts. The school has prepared thousands of students for careers with top racing teams worldwide, including in IndyCar and Formula 1.

As the motorsport industry continues to evolve, so does the demand for highly skilled professionals. “MTS is in a great position to meet the demand by offering a cutting-edge, tailor-made curriculum,” Manfrinato says.

Students can choose between two specialized tracks: racing mechanics or data analysis. Both play critical roles in a race team’s success, no matter the circuit.

Classes are purposely kept small, capped at 30 students for mechanics and 12-15 for data, and divided into smaller groups of about six to ensure personalized attention and hands-on experience. “That creates a strong teacher-to-student ratio and a fully immersive learning environment,” Manfrinato says.

TWO TRACKS TO THE FINISH LINE

The Racing Mechanic path is designed to prepare students for the intense, high-pressure race day environment. The curriculum covers vehicle setup, aerodynamics, electronics, and other technical aspects critical to optimizing performance on the track.

“Beyond technical skills, the course also emphasizes communication and teamwork,” Manfrinato says. “Mechanics must build strong working relationships with drivers and the entire team under high-pressure conditions.”

Training takes place in classrooms, pit areas, and on the track at MTS Indianapolis, using industry-grade equipment and materials. Throughout the course, students learn directly from seasoned motorsport professionals and visit leading racing industry companies. A highlight of the program is participating in an actual race day experience with a Formula 4 car,

working as part of a professional racing team.

The Data Acquisition path works closely alongside the Racing Mechanic path, giving students practical, pit-side experience working on real racecars. The curriculum covers electronics, transmission systems, wiring, and data analysis.

Students participate in on-track training days, simulating real pit lane operations to prepare for the fast-paced demands of professional motorsports. Educational visits and specialized training sessions led by performance engineers and data experts round out the experience.

“We teach students how to ensure the car and the data are synced up,” Manfrinato explains. “That means checking the basic function of the car and addressing performance or driver issues — everything that helps engineers make better decisions between races.”

LEARNING FROM THE BEST

MTS leans heavily into Indy’s rich racing resources, hiring some of the most experienced professionals in the business as instructors.

“We have instructors with a wealth of racing experience who are passionate about creating a new generation of skilled people in motorsports,” Manfrinato says. “We want to mold students into hard workers and true team players because behind every winning driver, there’s an incredible team.”

“Our courses are shorter, more intense, and highly hands-on,” she adds. “Students are immersed in real-world racing scenarios from the start.”

Classes meet on weekends to accommodate students balancing other commitments, with each semester lasting eight weeks. Tuition can be paid through a payment plan, and MTS is currently exploring financial aid options to help more students enroll.

IZZY SIMONSEN WINS GEIST MAGAZINE SENIOR STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Lawrence Central graduating senior Isabella “Izzy” Simonsen is the 2024-2025 Central Indiana Orthopedics (CIO) 2025 Senior Student-Athlete of the Year. She will receive $500 in scholarship money.

Simonsen is set up for success in more ways than one. As a four-year varsity starter for the girls’ volleyball team and standing 5 feet 9 inches, Simonsen is a force to be reckoned with on the court.

Off the court, you will find Simonsen in her other “happy” place - the stage. Having played a Dolly Parton-inspired take on the Pharaoh in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” Simonsen is passionate about theater.

“I’ve known I was going to be an actress for as long as I can remember,” Simonsen said. “Performing in front of people has always been my passion, whether in the living room doing impromptu dance routines or on the big stage. For me, the theater is a place where I can be my authentic self and perform. My favorite thing about acting is how it allows me to fully step into someone else’s shoes and portray them in a way that brings the audience closer

to not only the character, but the overall story.”

Simonsen held leadership positions for the varsity volleyball team and the International Thespian Society. She was the speaking captain of her team and webmaster for the Lawrence Central theater social media accounts.

On top of that, academics always remained front and center. “I used my study halls to help me get ahead on all of my homework to make sure that I don’t fall behind with as much as I’m doing,” she said.

Between the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society, Simonsen completed more than 200 hours of community service. “Honestly, this does act as a sort of unwind for me,” she said. “Giving back to the community is something I see as a part of my lifestyle, not as a chore on my agenda.”

Simonsen was also a part of Lawrence Central Dance Marathon, which raises money for

Riley Hospital for Children. In 2023, she raised 25% of the overall school donation.

Her volleyball skills garnered her plenty of recognition, as she was named to the allMetropolitan Interscholastic Conference team and made honorable mention on the all-Marion County team two years in a row.

“She excels at everything she does,” said her dad, Steve Simonsen. He has coached volleyball at multiple levels for decades and has watched his daughter blossom while expanding her hobbies and interests. “It’s more than just sports,” he said. “You can tell a lot about this kid by her character and dedication.”

Simonsen’s hard work has paid off. She is finishing the year with a 4.5 GPA, top 30 in her class, and as a distinguished scholar. She’ll be attending Butler University this fall with a double major in Theater and Psychology with a minor in Film. She plans to stay connected to volleyball by helping manage the Butler Volleyball team as time permits.

Simonsen’s full schedule has taught her a valuable life lesson - open communication is everything. “Let’s just say, it is not easy,” she said. “A lot of open dialogue is needed to participate in as many things as I do successfully, and my parents, coaches, directors, teachers, and club/honor society sponsors have helped me grow those skills.”

When Simonsen does have free time, she is with friends, critiquing horror movies, going to concerts or sitting around a bonfire. “Other than that, there is no resting,” she said with a wry smile. “I thrive off being busy, so I can’t imagine a life where I have nothing to do.”

A house is always more than just a house. It’s where people raise their kids, where they eat, where they gather to socialize with friends and neighbors, and where they live so much of life. Peace of mind for the state of a home is always desired, but so often the required repairs are unable to be made, and that little extra piece of peace gets lost.

Chelsea and Peter Kopelman were able to get some of that peace with Hometown Window. From the purchase of their home in Carmel seven years ago, the Kopelmans knew the 28 original wood windows would eventually have to be replaced. This was easier said than done. In addition to affordability, the Kopelmans took into account that the back of their house faces a golf course and is very visible. They wanted black, no-seam windows inside and out, which made the search even more difficult. For two to three years, they vetted companies that would be able to provide everything they needed.

A neighbor’s referral to Hometown Window was the game changer. The Kopelmans got the look and the quote they were looking for. From the beginning, Chelsea Kopelman says, the Hometown team was doing their jobs well.

“We live a busy schedule with three kids. I run my own business. My husband works

full-time. So we don’t have a ton of time to sit down with window salespeople for two hours to do the whole heat lamp test, and all the things,” Kopelman says. “We communicated that with the Hometown crew before they came over for the estimate, and they were really efficient with our time and respectful of our time, which was a nice surprise.”

“THEY WERE REALLY EFFICIENT WITH OUR TIME AND RESPECTFUL OF OUR TIME, WHICH WAS A NICE SURPRISE.”
—PETER KOPELMAN

Kopelman was impressed by the respectful conduct and interaction with the Hometown crew, especially when the Kopelmans’ recently refinished deck was scratched by a ladder.

“We brought [the damage] up to them, and they completely fixed the issue, no charge to us. A lot of contractors would just say, you know what, you gotta find somebody else to fix that, that’s not in our scope,” Kopelman

says. “[But Hometown] just completely took care of it, which was fantastic.”

The quality of service throughout the entire project has encouraged Kopelman and her husband to pick Hometown for their future project of replacing their front windows.

“I’m getting so many compliments anytime anybody sees them. We’ve just been getting a lot of compliments, people saying that it looks like a brand-new house.”

In addition to replacing and selling windows, Hometown also replaces and sells doors. Though Hometown offers the national brand Andersen Windows & Doors, the team is made up of entirely Indianapolis-area employees. Any project is customizable. They have a certified white-glove installation team, whose years of experience guarantee a good installation process and end result.

ROASTING COMMUNITY FLAVORS

LOCALLY OWNED GEIST COFFEE ADDS ROASTERY

Community is created through gatherings, shared interests, and, mostly, a sense of belonging. If you happen to be in Geist and a steaming cup of joe is your happy place, you’d probably find a whole clan of your people at a cozy little place called Geist Coffee. Founded in 2018, Geist Coffee has been a beacon for local espresso drinkers who come for the coffee and stay for the community.

Jeremy Balch and family launched Geist Coffee to provide quality coffee to their community. Their family has always bonded over coffee, making Geist Coffee the next

logical step in sharing their passion with neighbors and friends.

Jeremy is often found behind the counter, while his wife bakes pastries and other goodies for hungry customers. In the past, their two children were also frequently seen behind the counter, working at the coffee shop while attending college nearby. As of 2025, that passion and family collaboration has now expanded to include Geist Coffee Roasters, with their son Josh at the helm. Geist Coffee Roasters was a dream turned reality that stemmed from a desire to provide a quality brew all the way from the bean to the cup.

“The drive to open the roastery came from wanting to truly understand the details behind sourcing greens as well as the processes of roasting and blending great coffee. Bringing these in-house ensures that we are in control of what we are serving and provides wonderful opportunities to educate our team and community,” says Balch.

Geist Coffee Roasters opened its doors in March after months of fine-tuning their roasts and blends. The roastery offers coffees

sourced from around the world. Based on seasonal availability, they’ll be bringing customers coffee from Brazil, Mexico, Ethiopia, Colombia, and Guatemala.

The decision to include their son in their roastery has allowed them to have a clear line of communication, better team buy-in and a combined vision of excellence in their new endeavor.

“Along with our son Josh, we are also working closely with the Roaster of the Year winner to help dial in our roasts, source coffee and improve our roasting techniques. Tapping into their knowledge has given us a great understanding of best practices and how to approach coffees from various origins,” says Balch.

Attention to detail has never been lacking at Geist Coffee, but Balch hopes the roastery will allow their business to be more intentional in what they serve and who they support. Many of the ingredients are sourced from local farms, and they make many of their syrups in-house. Their team of baristas wants to grab hold of and own the creative coffee-making process.

Balch and family hope this next step will give their team a deeper understanding and knowledge of what truly makes a great craft coffee, which will have a positive impact on their community.

“Any time a business deepens its knowledge and commitment to a product, it has the potential to impact others with its passion for excellence. Our roastery will not only provide education for our customers but also offer a unique opportunity for our cafe team to deepen their knowledge,” he says.

Geist Coffee Roastery also plans to tap into other opportunities for coffee lovers in the near future, including coffee cupping (tasting), educational classes, and coffee subscriptions.

HOMECOMING TIME

BOBBY

BECOMES THE NEW HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN BOYS BASKETBALL COACH

When Bobby Allen accepted the head coaching position for the Hamilton Southeastern High School boys basketball team, it wasn’t just a career move but a homecoming. A longtime Fishers resident and seasoned coach, Allen steps into the role with a deep sense of purpose, community pride and a drive to elevate the program both on and off the court.

Allen officially takes the reins full-time in June, following the conclusion of his final semester teaching English at Guerin Catholic High School. But even before the ink dried on his new contract, Allen laid the foundation for his future at HSE.

“I’ve actually started working out with the players and meeting with the team,” he says. “There’s already a real sense of connection forming. It feels like the start of something special.”

Allen brings more than two decades of coaching experience, a career that started after he graduated from Cathedral High School in 1999. He was an assistant at Cathedral for five years before becoming the head coach at Knightstown High School from 2010 to 2016. After stints at Lawrence Central and Cathedral again as an assistant, he spent the last seven seasons leading the program at Guerin Catholic, where he built a competitive team and a culture rooted in

family and tradition.

“At Guerin, we worked really hard to create a sense of belonging, a second family,” Allen says. “We’ve had former players come back to support the team or just to be around the program. That’s the kind of culture I want to bring to HSE.”

For Allen, the move to Hamilton Southeastern is both professional and personal. His son, Benson, will be a freshman at HSE next year, and his younger son, Everett, will be a sixth grader in the district. Since the Allen family lives in Fishers, the opportunity felt tailor-made for them.

“Everything just lined up,” he says. “From the competitive level of play to the location, to the chance for our family to be even more connected to the community—it just made sense.”

Allen says that stepping into a program at a school the size and caliber of HSE comes with high expectations. He says the school regularly competes against the state’s top talent, a challenge he embraces.

“I’m excited to coach at a school where basketball matters, the stakes are high and the community is engaged,” he says. “We’re going to work tirelessly to put a great product on the floor and be a program that reflects the values of the school and the families here.”

Allen focuses on competition and development, but his coaching philosophy extends beyond wins and losses. He strongly emphasizes building relationships and supporting student-athletes holistically.

“We want to be a part of the youth programs, be visible in the community and create a sense of continuity so that when you grow up in this area, HSE basketball is

just a natural part of your experience,” he says. “It should feel like a second family.”

Family is a recurring theme in Allen’s story, reflected in how he runs his programs and the support he has received throughout his career. His wife, Mollie, has been a constant partner, working night shifts as a nurse for 15 years to help keep the household running during Allen’s demanding coaching schedules.

“When I first started at Knightstown, Benson was just born, and I was driving 40 minutes each way to get there,” Allen says. “Mollie would be heading to work as I got home, and we had to lean on family and friends to help with the boys. It was a team effort.”

Over time, the Allen family has become part of the programs Bobby has led. At Guerin Catholic, they were embraced by the school and its community, attending games and participating in events. That tradition continues at HSE. Just weeks into the job, the Allen family joined him on a school tour

and participated in the community’s “Meet the Coach” night. The community’s support and involvement have been instrumental in Allen’s coaching journey, and he looks forward to continuing this partnership at HSE.

“They’ve been with me every step of the way,” he says. “And it means everything to have their support as we start this new chapter.”

Despite the excitement about what lies ahead, Allen admitted that leaving Guerin Catholic was difficult.

“It was one of the hardest decisions of my life,” he says. “I’ve built deep friendships there. The support from the administration, families and kids was incredible. But I believe that God has a plan. Maybe everything I experienced there was preparing me for this opportunity.”

With a fresh start and a familiar community behind him, Allen is ready to lead HSE basketball into a new era.

“We want to create something lasting that kids are proud to be part of and that they want to return to years later,” he says. “That’s what makes a program great. And that’s what we’re going to build.”

SYNCING SUCCESS IN SOUND

MYRA KIVETT BUILDS FUSE MUSIC FROM STUDIO TO STARTUP

Music has always been a big part of Myra Kivett’s life. She started writing songs as young as 6 and never stopped. This love of creating music led Myra to discover the music synchronization world and eventually create her own company, Fuse Music Company, at 22.

Myra’s journey in the music industry as a young entrepreneur and songwriter is a testament to her passion and perseverance in an unpredictable industry. Fuse Music Company was created to produce exclusive and nonexclusive music for synchronization and commercial projects. The company has an extensive music catalog and works with agencies and other clients to develop personalized, original music in various genres for specific projects.

Fuse uses DISCO, a cloud-based platform, to host its music library, which includes genres such as pop, rock and classical, and emotion-based descriptions like cinematic, epic and mysterious. Myra likes experimenting with different genres under the Fuse Music umbrella.

“I make very upbeat pop music, but I can create other genres, so this year, I created minimalistic piano-type stuff, which is a huge need for certain industries,” Kivett said.

Before college, Myra had her first experience recording music in a studio while attending a music business camp at Anderson University. There, she realized she had a knack for writing songs and loved doing it. She talked with her parents about the possibility of making music a career.

“I wanted to make the financially wise decision because music is a very iffy career to go to school for,” she said.

Myra went to IU Indianapolis for communication studies with a music minor and recently graduated in 2024 with a master’s in applied communication. However, throughout school, Myra still found a way to incorporate music into her studies and record songs in her free time. She even set up a mini studio in her closet to record vocals.

“I ended up getting a microphone in my closet, with my clothes all around me, and learned how to record stuff,” she said.

In 2023, Myra discovered the world of synchronization, and its possibilities immediately hooked her. But if you’re wondering what synchronization, or sync, is, here’s a breakdown: Synchronization is the process where songs are used for film, TV series, advertisements, video games, trailers and other video media.

Like Myra and her company, a music publisher pitches original songs to music supervisors — professionals responsible for selecting music for specific scenes or projects — and grants them a sync license to use it.

“There are two sides to the music industry. There’s the big commercial artist side. But then, there’s this other side: synchronization. You can kind of do it from wherever,” she said.

With her family background, Kivett was destined for the arts. Her dad was a

singer-songwriter and commercial jingle writer. Her great-grandfather was a polka bandleader turned orchestral conductor, and her other great-grandfather played saxophone for Benny Goodman in the 1930s. Kivett’s dad has been her biggest supporter in starting her own business, seeing it as an opportunity for her to make a career in music and embrace her creative passions.

Using the internet to research synchronization, she joined an online music community created by another sync artist, Deraj. His platform is a place for independent artists to connect, collaborate and learn how to monetize their music through brand partnerships.

After graduating, Kivett knew she wanted to pursue a music career. She began sending emails to different music licensing and sync agencies, unsure if she’d hear back. It wasn’t until she attended a music conference and saw one of the owners of the well-known MFE Sync Agency, Rashad Richardson, that she made a promising connection.

“He was in one of my listening rounds, but it’s hard to get people’s emails, so I wasn’t able to connect with him until last year, when he ended up on a Zoom with Deraj,” Kivett explained.

After that, Myra received an email asking her to send her music, and a month later, she received confirmation that she had been accepted into MFE Sync Agency — on her dad’s birthday.

“One of my dad’s goals in life is to help me succeed in music,” she said while reflecting on this pivotal moment in her career. “My dad was so happy. He said it was the best birthday present ever.”

After getting signed to an agency, Myra officially started Fuse Music Company in 2024. She wanted a name separate from her singer-songwriter persona so she could eventually grow into something more. Eventually, she added another sync artist, Darius Foster, to her company, adding more variety and genres to Fuse’s catalog.

Fuse and the online community connections have allowed Kivett to experiment with different music styles and meet other artists. She connected with people all over, including a rapper in London.

“He raps on my tracks, which is fun because I feel like our voices are so different, but putting them together,” she said. “For smaller artists, it’s really hard to make different music and build a great following. I’m going to use Fuse as my outlet still to make all the fun music.”

Currently, Kivett is experimenting with creating new songs aimed at the ad space.

“Those songs are really fun to make because they favor a lot of fun, quirky, upbeat music,” she said.
