FIRED UP NEW INDY IGNITE HEAD COACH LAUREN BERTOLACCI READY FOR 2026 SEASON Writer / Mark Robinson

Indy opens its home schedule Jan. 24 against Omaha, the first of 14 matches slated for Fishers Event Center, the sparkling arena filled with energy and loyal Ignite fans urging their team on to victory each time out.

The Indy Ignite came tantalizingly close to achieving the unthinkable in the inaugural season for the women’s professional volleyball franchise, advancing to the championship match of the 2025 Major League Volleyball playoffs before bowing out. It was a heralded accomplishment for the league’s new kid on the block. That, however, was last season, and the Ignite’s sights are now laser-focused on how to take that next step to the top 10 | January 2026 | TownePost.com

Much of the core roster that led the Ignite to the MLV championship match last May has returned, including All-MLV First Team pick and opposite hitter Azhani Tealer, 2025 rookie standouts Lydia Martyn (middle blocker), Elena Scott (libero) and Anna DeBeer (outside hitter), and outside hitter Leketor Member-Meneh, who was well on her way to becoming an all-league selection before an ankle injury cut short her season. There’s also new fire burning within the Ignite, and it starts at the top. Indy named Lauren Bertolacci, a longtime successful pro coach in Europe, as the team’s new head coach in July.

Bertolacci’s philosophy has been simple from the outset. “Getting to the championship final was a huge achievement, and of course we want to take that next step,” Bertolacci says. “For me, the way forward is clear. We’re going to play bold, aggressive and fast. We want to put pressure on teams, score points and play with a big personality and character. “It’s very interesting for spectators

when we’re enjoying ourselves, being the aggressors and pushing the pace and style of the game,” the Australian native adds. “Most importantly, you score more points that way. You win games when you score more points, you let your mind be free, and you can really get in there and just play. I want to build an ‘Ignite way’ of volleyball — a clear identity that we can lean on every time we step on the court. If we stay true to that style, good things will happen.”

To that end, Bertolacci and the Ignite staff have bolstered the returning talent by adding more size and skill to the roster through free-agent signings last summer and the college draft in November. The team has been working hard in training camp, which began in December, to achieve that identity and be ready to go when the first serve is launched on the 2026 season.

That last aspect — high character — is what Bertolacci and the Ignite emphasize most as the franchise moves on from an immensely successful first season to build for the long term.

The added size to the roster can’t go unnoticed. Of the free agents, middle blocker Alexandra Botezat stands 6-foot-6, opposite hitter Camryn Hannah 6-2 and outside hitter Kayla Lund 6-0. In the MLV draft, the Ignite used their first-round selection to take 6-6 middle blocker Cara Cresse, a Fort Wayne, Indiana, native who was teammates with Ignite returnees Scott and DeBeer at the University of Louisville. With a pair of fourth-round picks, Indy chose outside

“For me, it’s always about having an impact. It’s what I crave,” she says. “This league is new, it’s growing, and it was made clear that our foundation is great but that I’d have the chance to lead the volleyball side of things. That’s what I want: to put my stamp on it, combine my vision with what Ignite already stands for and help push the league forward. Lola Lampley LAWRENCE CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

Lola Lampley’s basketball story began long before she ever stepped onto the court at Lawrence Central High School. As the daughter of former college basketball players Kenneth and Jannon Lampley, and the younger sister of standout athlete Jaylah Lampley, the game has always been woven into the fabric of her life. “I kind of just got thrown into it,” Lola says. She remembers watching her sister play on a school team when she was too young to join. “I always wanted to be out there with her,” she says. “When I was finally old enough, my parents knew it was something I wanted to do. Basketball was always around us.” Now a senior and one of the state’s most dynamic players, Lola has carved out her own identity by earning national attention and ultimately committing to play at LSU next fall. But her roots at Lawrence Central, and the family legacy that shaped her, remain at the heart of who she is. One of Lola’s most memorable seasons came during her sophomore year, when Lawrence Central captured a state championship. That title run was made even more meaningful because she played alongside her sister, Jaylah.

way. Watching my sister and our senior point guard lead that year helped me grow into the leader I am now.” Leadership and a relentless work ethic have become Lola’s trademarks. She describes her playing style as that of a “big guard,” a versatile force who can handle the ball, score, defend, and create mismatches. Much of her development comes from hours spent training with her father and brothers. “I’m always working,” she says. “Every single day, Monday through Sunday. But it’s something I love. Even during school, if I have a study hall, I’ll get shots up. Before every game, I try to get up 200 shots. It never feels like a job.” When it came to choosing a college, LSU stood out immediately. “They checked all the boxes,” Lola says. Her visit to Baton Rouge solidified her decision. “Getting the opportunity to play for a legendary coach like Kim Mulkey, how could you turn that down? And learning from a Hall of Famer who played my position, Seimone Augustus — that’s something not many people get,” she says.

the moment you walk through the door.” The landscape, facilities, and overall commitment to athlete development also played a role. “Everything there is bigger and better,” she says. “They make their athletes better.” Lola chose between nearly 30 schools before narrowing her options, but LSU offered exactly what she wanted and needed. Her goals for her freshman year center on growth. “I want to come in and be a sponge,” she says. “I want to soak up everything. Learn from the people around me. Keep pushing myself every day.” Long-term, she hopes to earn SEC honors and someday play professionally, but she also plans to major in mechanical engineering, keeping multiple future paths open.

Despite her intense schedule, Lola maintains balance through cooking, spending time with friends, watching movies, and resting her body whenever she can. Academics remain a priority, too — something she credits her parents for instilling in her. “Time management is huge,” she says. “Having parents who’ve been there helped a lot. They taught us how to stay organized and keep our grades where they need to be.” To younger athletes, Lola offers one simple message: confidence comes from hard work. “If you’re in the gym giving 100% on your own, when you’re in front of a crowd, you’ve already been there,” she says. “Believe in yourself, trust your work and be resilient. That’s how the good become great.” As she prepares for her final months at Lawrence Central, Lola Lampley stands ready to continue the family legacy while blazing a path entirely her own.

GEIST RESERVOIR TREATMENT SUMMARY 2025 MANAGING SEDIMENTATION, INVASIVE PLANTS & ALGAE As 2025 comes to a close, it’s time to review our annual Geist Reservoir Treatment Summary. We’re pleased to present another season of successful voluntary lake treatments, all of which are permitted by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the Indiana Department of Environmental Management(IDEM), and Citizens Energy Group. We couldn’t do it alone. Our treatments are fully funded through donations, and because of that, donor areas do take priority. Thank you for all the contributions toward our 2025 Lake Treatment, and for helping us try to keep up. Let’s review Geist’s 2025 treatment updates by beginning with the reservoir’s aquatic plant ecology.

IDENTIFYING INVASIVE AQUATIC PLANTS AND ALGAE Vegetation in Geist Reservoir can get out of control. Invasive species, such as Eurasian Watermilfoil, threaten native plant and animal life and can degrade entire ecosystems if not properly managed. Every year, we help manage vegetation to support healthy conditions in Geist’s ecosystem.

HERE ARE COMMON PLANTS AND ALGAE THAT CALL GEIST HOME

EURASIAN WATERMILFOIL This long, lush green plant is an invasive one. It competes with native species, creating dense surface mats that impair navigation, swimming, and fishing. It spreads through fragmentation and can harm our ecosystem at Geist.

COMMON COONTAIL

WATER STARGRASS

In appearance, Coontail is very similar to Watermilfoil; however, a huge distinction is that it’s native to Geist Reservoir. Common Coontail forms dense mats from late spring through early fall, providing good cover for our fish.

This native plant looks pretty much just like it sounds—submerged grass-like stems with yellow flowers that look similar to stars. Water Stargrass has always been at Geist, but at low levels. It’s difficult to control and has been slowly expanding above the Fall Creek bridge for the last few years.

FILAMENTOUS ALGAE

BLUE-GREEN ALGAE

Also known as moss, this invasive algae grows best in shallow, calm waters or dense plant beds and can quickly spread when conditions are right. Different types of Filamentous algae grow at different times of year, and Rhizoclonium causes most of our issues at Geist.

This bright green algae encompasses thousands of species, which vary throughout the season. It, too, can quickly reproduce in the right conditions and is invasive. However, it’s less common in Geist since the expansion of zebra mussels in 2010. Blue-green algae can produce toxins, taste-and-odor compounds, and films on the surface of our lake

TIMELINE OF TREATMENTS Treatments at Geist are designed to control submerged plants and algae, most of which occur naturally. We treat the lake with EPA-registered aquatic herbicides, completed by state-licensed and trained applicators. We can’t control or prevent floating plants. Our treatment plan only covers native plants in approved areas of Geist. The first treatment of 2025 took place on May 29. After a very wet spring, weather conditions led to murkier water in early summer. We treated weekly from late May through late September using four application boats, starting at daylight and finishing by noon. The application boats were guided via GPS to locate specific homes and treatment areas. Reduced water quality led to less aquatic plant growth than in previous years. Filamentous algae growth increased in late summer.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM TREATMENT MANAGEMENT HERE’S OUR KEY TAKEAWAYS:

Effectively manage expectations. It’s a lake, not a swimming pool. Certain areas will need more work than others — that’s inevitable. Open communication is key. Plant and algae growth vary from year to year and are hard to predict. Vegetation can be actively managed without negatively affecting fish, wildlife, or water clarity, provided that funding is available. Dedicated, consistent treatment management helps preserve the reservoir.

Rock Steady Boxing’s nationally recognized, noncontact boxing program has long been a source of hope, empowerment, and physical transformation for seniors facing the daily challenges of Parkinson’s disease. January’s celebration will highlight personal stories from participants, share progress milestones, and uplift the voices of those who demonstrate that determination and community can make all the difference. Rock Steady Boxing is proud to begin the new year by shining a spotlight on one of the most vital and inspiring groups within its community — seniors living with Parkinson’s disease.
