together.

Jeff Schoonover grew up in Blissfield, Michigan, where kids rode their bicycles everywhere and were raised with a strong appreciation for community. When he went to high school, he got a job at the local pharmacy delivering prescriptions.

“I knew how important the business side of a doctor’s office was so I concentrated my studies in the fields of business administration and marketing,” Kari said. “As it turns out, our interests have complimented our careers as a couple,” she adds with an easy smile.

“Every time I delivered a prescription, I could see in a small way that my job made a difference and how much it meant to the people who were sick or just needed the scripts to maintain their health. It was a good feeling to be able to help families,” he said. From that time on, Jeff Schoonover knew that helping others was what he wanted to do. When he went to a Lutheran youth conference, he met a girl named Kari. She was from Chicago. They would become pen pals all through high school, attend college together and later, partners for life. From the very beginning, as he studied to become a doctor and she majored in business, they had a goal of working

The opening of Indiana Vein Specialists located at 11876 Olio Road (Fishers, Indiana) in October of 2011 speaks to Jeff and Kari’s dedication and dream of making a difference in people’s lives. It is estimated that there are more than 80 million men and women who suffer from some form of venous disorder. Heredity is the number one contributing factor that causes varicose and spider veins and, since most veins lie deep beneath the skin’s surface, vein disorders are not always visible to the naked eye. Indiana Vein Specialists offer multiple state-of-the-art solutions to people who suffer from vein problems. Veins that

cause leg pain, swelling, recurrent superficial blood clots, bleeding or ulceration are prime candidates for treatment. Veins that cause other symptoms such as aching, heaviness and fatigue or that are cosmetically unappealing, may also benefit from treatment. There are two general treatment options: conservative measures such as compression stockings, leg elevation, analgesics and corrective measures such as endovenous thermal ablation, chemical ablation, sclerotherapy and surface laser treatment. In many cases, a combination of treatment methods works better and the sooner these symptoms are addressed the better. About Dr. Jeff and his team Prior to starting Indiana Vein Specialists, Dr. Jeff practiced vein disease treatment at one of the largest vein clinics in the nation and served as a regional medical director. Before then, he practiced family medicine in Yorktown, Indiana and is board certified in family practice. He also served as a physician for 4 years in the United States Air Force where he achieved the rank of Major. The highly trained staff at Indiana Vein Specialists include: Natalie Gilman, Practice Administrator, Maggie Haley, RN, Nurse Sclerotherapist, Nathan Watson, Vascular Ultrasound Technologist and Diana Clauson, Scheduling Coordinator. This team shares the Schoonover’s vision of creating a medical practice dedicated to presenting a welcoming

atmosphere and skilled patient care. Jeff and Kari reside in Hamilton County with their two sons, ages 12 and 6. They are an active family and enjoy participating in triathlons as a relay team together. You may find them on the lacrosse fields, at the pool or biking on the Monon. When you visit Indiana Vein Specialists, take notice of the beautiful framed pictures dotted throughout the tastefully furnished office suite. Both Jeff and Kari, as well as their oldest son, are amateur photographers, and their 6-year-old is a budding artist. The entire family contributed to the office dĂŠcor. This truly is a talented family that works together to create just the right kind of a welcoming patient atmosphere in ever so many ways! For more information on the medical services of the Indiana Vein Specialists, please visit www.indyveins.com or call for a personal consultation at (317) 348-3023. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. No referrals are necessary. J. Andy Murphy is a published author and works as a literary agent for regional writers. The award-winning artist whose pastels and oil paintings capture many Indiana and regional scenes, was excited about the new opportunity “This is just great,” says Pam. “This is like a giant refrigerator for me,” she adds with a laugh. “It’s just like when I was a kid and hung my art work all over the place,” she quickly adds with excitement showing. Pam’s work will be showcased through February 10th. New exhibits will be unveiled on a regular basis, showcasing up to 60 works of visual art by each local artist or group. The permanent art gallery is free and open to the public. Hoosier artist Pam Newell stands by her artwork now hanging in Fishers Town Hall art gallery.

political Spotlight

The McIntosh family (left to right) Ellie, David, Davey and Ruthie. (Below) Following the 2011 redistricting process, Indiana’s new 5th Congressional District represents the heart of the Hoosier Heartland, spanning Hamilton, Madison, Tipton, and Grant counties with portions of Marion, Boone, Blackford, and Howard counties. To explore an interactive map of the new district, visit David’s website at www.DavidMcIntosh.org and click on “The New 5th District.”

David McIntosh: A Candidate for the Republican 5th District By J. Andy Murphy

With the November elections just around the corner, I started thinking about who most of us would choose as their favorite president? In my journey on this subject, I found that a lot of people had trouble answering my question. That is, until I presented the question to David McIntosh, who is among the Republican candidates challenging Dan Burton, who has held the 5th District Congressional seat for the last 28 years. Who will actually be elected in the primary and placed on the November ballot is yet unknown. So who is David McIntosh’s favorite president? George Washington. This surprised me as McIntosh worked for another president, Ronald Reagan. He explained his choice. “America has had many wonderful presidents, but George Washington to me was most of all a very strong leader. He was a moral man who dedicated himself to doing the right thing for his country and the people he served in the most turbulent of 8

geist c o m m u n i t y

times. I’m a history buff, but history tends to focus most on the battles Washington fought and indeed his honesty. But if you really get into the character of George Washington, you’ll find a humble man who helped shape the foundation of our country that still exists today.” He added, “Did you know Washington turned down the opportunity to hold the title of King, which was presented to him by Alexander Hamilton. Washington also initiated the actions that would limit a president to only serve two consecutive terms.” His eyes sparkled with admiration as he added, “George Washington is someone whose principles I’ve always admired.” David McIntosh is no stranger to American history, as you will find his name listed as a former Indiana congressman (representing the former 2nd District), who served 6 years in Washington. He chose not to run again and returned to Indiana as a private citizen. His decision was based on a campaign promise of believing in term limits. He kept his word of serving for 3 terms even though he was a very

| j a n u a r y 2 0 1 2

1/25/2012 5:08:00 AM

popular and well-respected congressman who had the ability to find common ground that brought people together to form solutions for difficult government issues. He also earned a national reputation as the leader of the regulatory reform movement. So what’s behind his decision to toss his hat into the political scene again? “Fear. I was talking to my children one day about how I felt America was really in serious, serious trouble. Looking at them as a parent and someone who has served in Congress and understands the system and how it should work, I couldn’t tell them that things would all work out,” he said. “It was a difficult moment for me,” he stated. “It was at this point in the conversation that I realized I needed to step up to the plate and get involved if at all possible. When the boundaries for the 5th District were changed and our home zip code was included, the phone started to ring with people asking me to consider returning to politics. I knew I had the experience to present positive options that speak to what needs to be done. America has to be returned to a pro-growth country; we need to lower taxes and reduce regulations that keep small businesses from competing. We must address the issues of health care and repeal Obama care as there is no way to manage it successfully. Our national budget can be balanced, but not on the backs of the poor and the middle class, but in a sensible fiscal manner that makes economic sense for the welfare of the American people at all income levels. It’s all doable. There’s so much more that should be on the table,” he said with obvious concern in his voice. As the conversation continued, I noticed other people nearby listening as he spoke. All ages, sitting in Starbucks reading the paper, working on their computers, enjoying an early morning cup of coffee. McIntosh had clearly captured their attention even though he had no idea that others were listening. His ideas were fresh and his words carried the energy and clarity that is so absent in today’s political world. This is not a man who grandstands for attention. It is a man who understands the common fears that most Americans carry with them today. McIntosh is clearly running toward his fears – not away from them. That’s what real leaders do. In America, we have been given the right to cast our vote for individuals who we hope will act on our behalf. George Washington was one such elected official and, if given the chance to serve in Washington’s political shadow, David McIntosh would very much like to be the person chosen to represent the 5th Congressional District in Indiana. If he is elected, another positive would be his ability to hit the ground with an accumulated 6 years of seniority already

attached to his ranking. Seniority is important in Washington because it enables a representative to quickly get involved with important issues and, the committees that will shape these critical decisions. This I will especially remember about meeting David McIntosh: For a short period of time, this man gave a group of strangers in Starbucks a gift … that of hope. For detailed information on David McIntosh, his Indiana roots, education and political qualifications, please visit him at www.davidmcintosh.org.

McIntosh served in the Reagan Administration.

Brief Bits About David McIntosh During the Reagan Administration, McIntosh served as Special Assistant to the Attorney General and as Special Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs. David McIntosh graduated from Yale University with a B.A. (cum laude) in 1980, and later received a J.D. from University of Chicago Law School in 1983. At the University of Chicago he was taught by Antonin Scalia, who later became a Supreme Court Justice. He is the co-founder of The Federalist Society. Termed the “national law school without walls,” the organization is a nationwide movement of 40,000 conservatives and libertarians to advocate in law and higher education for legal reform through a return to our constitutional foundations. John Mellencamp’s long time lead guitartist, Larry Crane, is back home again and sharing his talents with fans in a series of guitar clinics. Crane, who has resided in Florida for the past few years, is back in Indiana and made his first guitar clinic appearance in Castleton at Sam Ash Music Center located at 8284 Center Run Drive. Close to 300 fans turned out to listen as Crane shared the ins and outs of Authority Song and Play Guitar, two hits from Mellencamp’s 1983 album Uh-Huh.

Crane has also worked with Steve Earle, John Prine and John Fogerty. The Hoosier artist released two of his own albums, Tropical Depression and Wire and Wood.

Larry Crane, former lead guitarist for John Mellencamps band, poses with new shirts to kick off his guitar clinics across the state.

His appearance at the music store was filmed for future commercial releases. Crane plans additional clinics focusing on popular hit songs such as Pink Houses, Paper and Fire, and Lonely Ol’ Night. Crane played lead guitar for Mellencamp’s band from 1975

Crane’s Manager says fans will hear and see a lot more of Larry Crane in this New Year. We all look forward to this. For more information, visit www.larrycrane.com. open bay treatment area that is warm and inviting. Picture this: Kids can pick out their own colorful “stationary boat” to stretch out on while taking in the artistically painted walls that help create the feeling of paradise while receiving treatment.

This place rocks! And that’s exactly what Dr. Ana Vazquez, a pediatric dentist and founder of Fishers Pediatric Dentistry wanted to accomplish when she set out to design a space where kids’ dentistry needs were addressed early on with a different approach to care.

For siblings or waiting guests, a special nearby area offers a game center to help occupy their energies and exploratory minds. Through the décor and staff’s attitudes, Fishers Pediatric Dentistry has created a fun and inviting place for children of all ages to enjoy. Individual suites were designed with a “surf shack” appeal catering to the young adult patient as well as private cabanas allowing for a quieter atmosphere. This pediatric dental office was designed to reflect Dr. Ana’s Puerto Rico homeland. The thoughtful planning works: Kids like it so much they ask to go back even before their next visit is scheduled.

Fishers Pediatric Dentistry is like walking into a tropical resort. Right from the very first visit when children step inside the reception area, they experience a playful atmosphere that eases them into a comfortable state of mind. Fishers Board Seeks Input on $2.5 Million Fund By Tom Britt and Joe Wadlington After a four-year fight by the Geist United Opposition, the unincorporated areas on the north half of Geist Reservoir officially became the Town of Fishers’ newest residents on January 1, 2010. A new voting district was formed to give these residents a voice on the seven-person Fishers Town Council and Pete Peterson, the former leader of the anti-annexation movement, won the seat in the November election. Furthering Fishers’ olive branch to the residents, the Fishers Town Council set aside an impoundment fund of $2.5 million for the newly annexed residents to spend on local improvements. A volunteer board of Geist residents will get to work on how to best utilize this fund, and they need input. The Geist Impoundment Board is comprised of two individuals from each of the three annexed sections, along with three “at large residents. The nine men and women went through an application process and were selected by the town council after a round of interviews. The Geist Impoundment Board is comprised

of the following residents: Mark Jones, Jack Kowal, Jeff Lantz, Rachel Quade, Gary Batesole, Russell Bruce, Roger Kessler, Brad Johnson, and Anthony Najem. While the council refrained from questioning the individuals’ personal opinions on the Geist annexation, the resulting selections were a mixed bag of pro- and anti-annexation residents. Rachel Quade, a member of the Geist Impoundment Board and former Geist United Opposition board member, commented, “I think it actually says a lot about the [Fishers] Council members in that they put some of the people who were involved in the Geist United Opposition on this board. I think it’s a good sign. A diversity of opinions about the annexation will certainly be fertile ground for a lot of great ideas for the future. The Geist Impoundment Fund was endowed through property taxes from the residents in the annexed areas and earmarked for capital improvement projects. “It’s a proxy fund that will be paid over three years. In two more years it should be a total of $2.5 million, said Scott Faultless, Town Council President. Their first order of business is to gather the opinions of their Geist constituents and flush out the best ideas. After they have selected the best projects, they will present them to the Fishers Town Council along with a cost analysis. The council will then decide if the project should be carried out or not, limited only by budget.

Kids will be kids. 'HIHQG\RXULQQRFHQFH

“The board will be active for the next three years, although residents can expect to see results much sooner than that, said new Fishers Town Council member Pete Peterson. He insisted the Geist Impoundment Board could turn an idea around in just a few months if it hit all the right notes.

The possibilities are endless and citizens should see this as an exciting time to have their voices heard. “Now that we are formally a part of Fishers, we have a voice, and a place to bring our voices to,” said Peterson. Jackson responded, “I always knew I would be involved in a career that somehow focused on children, especially those without parents. Doing the work I do today evolved from my love of kids.” Today, she represents clients interested in domestic or international adoption or those who are seeking alternative reproductive options for building their families (including gestational surrogacy). Jackson has indeed dedicated herself to the care and adoption of orphans worldwide, while assisting couples and individuals to realize their dreams of becoming parents. Harden laughs as she reflects on the question. “The answer is no. I was good at tennis and extremely competitive (she was a member of the University of Texas at Austin tennis team and a four-time Indiana State Tennis Champion), but I finally came to terms with the fact that tennis wasn’t in my professional future. I thought about studying medicine, but didn’t like blood. Law and my competitive nature seemed to be the right choice for me,” she added. The right choice indeed as Harden received her Juris Doctor magna cum laude from Indiana University School of Law, finishing in the top 5% of her class.

Miracle on 126th Street Three Heroes Save HSE Student Athlete By Janet C. Striebel “D, D, D, D-Bone” was the chant coming from the HSE High School Basketball fan section on December 16th against Zionsville. The nickname “D-Bone” has always been used to address the Varsity basketball player, Drew Robinson, who has always played power forward and center. This student has lived to tell a story of an amazing phenomenon that he’s endured. On November 15th 2011, many HSE students and administrators witnessed a true miracle on 126th Street. During third period, precalculus class, a student who was taking notes suddenly collapsed for no apparent reason. This student, Drew Robinson, and star basketball player for HSE High School, had a cardiac arrest. His teacher, Joe Golden, a former EMT and firefighter, knew exactly what to do. He instructed one student to call 911 and another to go get a nurse. Meanwhile, Golden laid him flat on the ground. Soon, Beth Hanover, a nurse, arrived to room B208. She and Golden began administering CPR. A student was directed to get the other nurse and the AED (Automated External Defibrillator.) This time, the other HSE nurse, Sue Albano, quickly arrived with the AED. Both nurses did CPR and then the AED was used to deliver a shock allowing his heart to resume to a normal rhythm. Together,

Beth and Sue continued to do CPR as directed by the AED, until the Fishers Fire Department arrived. The paramedics transported Drew to the St.Vincent Medical Center. After several days of testing, Drew underwent surgery to install an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD.) If his heart ever stops again, this device will automatically send a shock to keep his heart going. Many are wondering, “What caused this to happen?” Drew has never had any health problems and has always been healthy. Ironically, just a few months earlier, Drew had an optional echocardiogram done through the school system for student athletes prior to the school year. His mom, Diane Robinson, remembers, “I wanted Drew to have this test done because it was offered through the school system at such an affordable rate that it would be crazy not to take advantage for any athlete.” His test results came out fine and he was ready to play HSE varsity basketball. By having the echocardiogram done earlier in the year, the cardiologists were able to compare the test results from the past to the present in order to help with their prognosis. Doctors are not exactly sure yet what the root cause was for Drew’s cardiac arrest, as the test results are still pending.

The Right Place at the Right Time “If something was going to have to happen, I’m glad it happened in my classroom where I could help Drew,” says Joe Golden, Math Teacher at Hamilton Southeastern High School. For seven years, Golden served as a Firefighter/EMT in Pike Township. This experience helped him orchestrate the spontaneity with which he made quick decisions within that brief episode (approximately 4 min.) until Drew’s heartbeat was restored. With his prior experience and EMT training, Golden knew what to do—from (Left to right) Joe Golden, Sue Albano, Drew Robinson, and Beth Hanover. Vision Fulfilled

Dr. Philip Dulberger takes helm of new IU Health Saxony Hospital By Tom Britt

Just across the interstate from Hamilton Town Center, IU Health Saxony Hospital is now open for business with a local anesthesiologist at the helm. Dr. Philip Dulberger, or “Dr. Phil” as his friends and colleagues refer to him, shared an idea six years ago that took him from the operating room to the second floor administrative offices at Fishers’ first specialty hospital with services focused on cardiovascular, orthopedic, spine care and emergency services. In October 2005, Dulberger was in between surgeries when he decided to call IU Health (then called Clarian Health) CEO Dan Evans. “I have an idea about a different approach to deliver health care,” Dulberger told Evans. “Hospitals traditionally wait for people to get sick 28

and come in. I propose that we should establish a campus that focuses on helping people live a healthier lifestyle and keeping them well, so that when patients do become sick, we have developed that relationship with the patient, and they choose IU Health as their partner.” Evans listened, agreed, and discussions continued for about six months with others within IU Health. After Dulberger returned from a spring break vacation in 2006, the decision was made to move forward with the plan. Dulberger traded his lab coat for a hardhat and wound down his anesthesiology practice. Being a doctor, Dulberger brought a unique perspective to the planning process. He believes that the future of

health care will be based on two things: Patient quality outcomes and service experience. Dulberger, with a team of architects and designers, created a hospital centered around the healing forces of nature. Everything from the natural stone and walking paths outside to the 11-by-24 foot mural in the lobby entitled “Hope Around the Bend” creates an atmosphere that feels more like a resort than a hospital. Upon entering the hospital, what’s most impressive is what you don’t see. Borrowing Disney theme park concepts, patient support and custodial services are all conducted “off stage”, out of view from patients or visitors in the hallways. Patient rooms feel like a deluxe suite at the Conrad, complete with oak cabinetry designed to hide all

the hoses, gauges, and monitors that can intimidate anyone. “My goal is to have people walk out of here and say ‘that didn’t feel like a hospital’.” Dulberger will be the first to admit that form follows function throughout the design, but he adds that the most important element is the staff. “Doctors are generally trained as individual care givers, not as teams. The only way to a successful facility is not through any one person, but through the team.” To that end, Dulberger dons his lab coat and makes his rounds like any other doctor, checking in on his staff. Greeting each employee by name with a smile, Dulberger exemplifies the team spirit he feels is so important

Dulberger often times sports his lab coat and makes his rounds to check in on the IU Health Saxony “partners”.

to patient care. As for the patients he checks in on, he refers to them internally as “guests,” citing “it gives us a different mindset and keeps us in touch with the experience.” While the doors are now open on the hospital, construction continues.

Dulberger still hopes that some day a future expansion will include a fitness facility-medical office building complex to fulfill the original vision of connecting health care and prevention. “Imagine treating a patient with borderline diabetes and high-blood

pressure with a weight-loss program jointly developed by physicians and health trainers. Rather than the traditional prescription as a treatment, we would engage patients in a healthier lifestyle.” Dulberger plans to return to his anesthesia practice at least one day per week now that the hospital has opened to “keep you in touch” with his fellow team members. Now that the stress of opening the facility has past, Dulberger looks forward to spending more time with his Carmel High School sweetheart and wife, Carolyn, and his two children Lauren and Josh. Active members of the New Hope Presbyterian Church, Dulberger and his wife enjoy a glass of wine and their patio in the summer months at their Hamilton Proper home. You also might spot them at their favorite restaurant across I-69, Stone Creek Dining Company. This summer, they plan to take their family on a train trip out west to San Francisco to see the country as he did when he was a child. “We did this trip when I was a kid and I’ve always wanted to do this with mine.” The train trip out west and the experience Dulberger strives to deliver throughout the IU Health Saxony Hospital have a lot in common. While the destination can often times seem far away, the journey and outcomes can have a lasting impression.

LearningRx brain training—done one-on-one in a coaching environment—raises IQ by an average of 15 to 20 points, which statistics* link to higher salaries. In fact, a study by the US Department of Labor Statistics showed that a gain of even 10 IQ points can result in a $9,000 to $18,000 increase in annual earnings. Multiply that by 40 years of employment and the numbers become Scan with your even more impressive! LearningRx brain training is proven to increase IQ by an average of 15 points or more. That means for every dollar spent on brain training, there’s a return of $127 over a client’s lifetime.

hy be limited by the usual help commonly offered to ADHD students? Classroom accommodation often leaves students feeling separated and inferior. Medication therapy is fraught with potential negative side effects. Brain training is a tool that can expand treatment options. ADHD students benefit from the ability of a professional brain trainer to precisely target and enhance specific attention skills. Brain training can improve attention skills General attention skill is actually a composite of subskills such as sustained attention (staying on task), selected attention (ignoring distractions), and divided attention (attending to more than one task). Effective brain training exercises can isolate and improve a student’s ability in each of the attention sub-skills. This precision targeting of skills makes brain training a unique and powerful treatment option.

As an added benefit, 37% of students who were on medication when they started the program showed such improvements, they were able to reduce their dosage or stop taking medication altogether—often before completing the program! These gains enable students to immediately enjoy peace and focus previously thought to be impossible. This is the power of brain training for ADHD students!

> “How long has your daughter been missing?” It was a father’s nightmare. Even as I answered the officer’s questions, my mind was racing. What else could I do to find her? I’d searched Ariel’s school. I’d left messages with her friends. Best I could tell, my sixteen-year-old had disappeared between her last class and getting on the bus to come home. This crisis was coming after a heartbreaking year or two, with Ariel hanging around with the wrong kids and making some poor choices. The problems began when she started high school. There hadn’t been one big sign, just lots of little ones. Like how, on Sunday nights, if my wife or I mentioned school the next day, Ariel’s demeanor would change and she’d say “I know,” in a defeated voice. Or how I’d tell her about a book I thought she’d enjoy and, instead of getting excited like she used to, she’d frown and say, “No thanks, I don’t like reading.” Or the fact that she was spending hours doing homework every night and her grades were still dropping. I remember looking at one report card and saying, “Honey, you have to get better grades than these.” Her voice brimmed with frustration and defeat as she said, “Dad, I can’t do it. I’m not smart enough.” A doctor put Ariel on ADD medication and, initially, it helped. Then the side effects kicked in: headaches, quick temper, loss of appetite, serious insomnia and depression. She woke up every morning looking drawn and exhausted. Ariel simply gave up—on education, on her future, on everything. She started skipping school. Getting in trouble.

Late that night, we discovered her at a friend’s house and brought her home. Ariel was safe—for the moment. But we had to find answers and fast. We started researching various learning centers and tutoring options. We spent hours talking with people from Sylvan® and other centers. When we saw an ad for LearningRx, we began researching brain training, too. I knew we could go to a tutoring center and Ariel would perform better in math or English. But we needed something that would help her with all facets of thinking, learning, and life, and LearningRx was the only system that did that. Weeks into the program, we started seeing changes. Homework took less time, and school started making more sense. She also got completely off ADD medications. The brain training exercises got a lot easier, too. We did the Partner program, where she did half her training at the center and half with me at home. The accomplishments were all hers, but it was something we did together, and it was a huge bonding experience for us. Today Ariel says that LearningRx gave her confidence, hope and a future. She graduated from high school and is going to college. She’s going to be a nurse. I watched my child go from having no hope and no thoughts of the future, to having dreams and hopes. I was losing my baby girl, and now I have her back. Scan with your –Danne Zeigler

The Facts Behind Brain Training 5 keys to faster, easier learning through brain training

1. COGNITIVE SKILLS Make Learning Possible Specific brain functions (cognitive skills) are the foundation for all learning. Strong individual skills naturally produce faster and easier learning. The following are key cognitive skills that must be strong for fast, efficient learning: t Attention Pay attention over time and despite distraction t Processing Speed Think more quickly and efficiently t Working Memory Hold on to and use information during the learning process

2. WEAKNESSES When Skills Are Weak

t Auditory Processing Distinguish, blend, and segment sounds accurately t Visual Processing Create and picture mental images while thinking or reading

t Logic & Reasoning Associate concepts and images accurately when problem solving t Long-Term Memory Efficiently recall facts and stored information

WHAT MAKES LEARNING POSSIBLE?

WHAT IF ONE OR MORE SKILLS ARE WEAK?

Active

In at least 80% of students, common learning struggles or failures are directly connected to specific weak brain skills. Here are examples of learning symptoms linked to specific cognitive skill weaknesses: Weakness Attention Skills Processing Speed Working Memory Auditory Processing Visual Processing Logic & Reasoning Long-Term Memory

Symptom Can’t focus; easily distracted Homework takes too long to get done Difficulty following directions; lots of starting over Poor reading, comprehension, and spelling Math word problems are hard; poor comprehension Low problem-solving and organization abilities Poor recall of previously learned information

3. NEUROPLASTICITY and Cognitive Change

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to recruit unused neurons and build new neural connections to process new information. It is the brain’s capacity to rewire itself. t Connections can change and grow at any age. t Proper training can stimulate new neural connections. t New connections enhance or restore function. t Training can stimulate faster, easier thinking. t Training can cause neurons to re-route around damage due to traumatic injury.

4. BRAIN TRAINING

Strengthens Skills

Brain training stimulates the brain and results in improvements to key learning skills. Proper training includes the following elements and techniques:

How Do We Learn? Learning happens when we receive and process information. Cognitive skills are the necessary tools used to receive and process this information.

t One-on-One Training: promotes immediate feedback and personal progress t Targeted: attacks specific weaknesses for greater effectiveness t Proper Sequencing: provides increasing difficulty in easy-to-achieve steps

WHY TUTORING FALLS SHORT

t Dynamic Loading: drives skill improvement into automatic/subconscious levels t Increasing Intensity: improvement comes only when skills are stretched t Non-Academic Exercises: makes training fun and motivational

BRAIN TRAINING STRENGTHENS THE KEY SKILLS NEEDED TO LEARN

5. TWO PARTS TO SMART: Processing and Knowledge A car won’t perform well when its tires are flat. In the same way, students can’t process facts, knowledge and information when their underlying skills are weak. This is why repetition (through tutoring or reteaching) usually fails to produce long-term results. Problems will continue until the underlying skills are strengthened. “[The brain] responds to use and disuse by either growing and remaining vital or decaying, and thus, for the first time, we are learning to see mental weaknesses as physical systems in need of training and practice.” — DR. Most struggling readers have a corresponding auditory processing skill weakness. Auditory processing weakness can manifest in several ways: difficulty distinguishing between similar sounds, trouble recognizing simple sound combinations, and struggling to accurately blend sounds together. Any of these cognitive skill weaknesses will hinder fluent reading. Only a reading program that uncovers and strengthens weak auditory processing skills has any chance of producing lasting reading improvement. This is where the power of brain training makes the difference! Brain training leads to increased reading potential Effective reading help begins by identifying any weak underlying skills — like memory or auditory processing. Skill-specific training exercises build strength. Once a strong cognitive foundation is restored, a unique sound-to-code reading system develops new reading techniques and habits in the student. Reading is quickly transformed from a slow, choppy effort into a fast and efficient learning tool. An assessment is the first step. To see if cognitive skill weaknesses are the cause of your or your child’s reading difficulties, contact a LearningRx Brain Training Center today.

oung or old, for your entire life, your brain retains the capacity to reassign unused or little-used neurons (brain cells) and synapses (connections) in response to properly designed mental training exercises. The science built into LearningRx brain training maximizes the brain’s adaptability (neuroplasticity) to expand the specific areas used to process and store information. These newly developed “power centers” generate fresh mental capacity that enhances memory skills, and easily outpaces natural age-related decline in the elderly. This means that brain training can enhance and extend vital memory skills for the student, the career adult, or the senior adult.

> “I’ll be honest, it hurt to listen to him read.” But that wasn’t the worst of it. By the time my son Dillon reached high school, he seemed ticked off most of the time. He was acting out in class. He was disrespectful. Teachers would call me at home and tell me, “Your son needs to be more respectful in class.” As if I didn’t know! At home, I’d tell him to study for a test and he’d refuse. He’d say, “I don’t have to study. I understood the homework.” And he had. So why did he fail every test? After we got him tested at LearningRx, it all made sense, because his short-term and working memory skills were really weak. Now we realize he really did understand the concepts as he learned them; he just couldn’t hang onto them. No wonder he was frustrated and mad at the world. We kept thinking he was lazy. To motivate him to work harder, we took his cell phone away, took his car away, but it never seemed to work out like we’d hoped. It makes so much sense, looking back, now that we know what was going on! Within weeks of starting brain training he was doing things he never could have done before. The first thing I noticed was that Dillon wasn’t spending nearly as much time struggling over homework. In fact, he finished his assignments so quickly that I wondered if he was actually doing the work! The only thing that convinced me was the improvement in his grades as C’s and D’s turned into A’s and B’s. Before long, he was using his cell phone at school to snap

pictures of A’s on tests and homework assignments and text them to me, too excited to wait until he got home to show me the good news! But what I really loved was that Dillon simply became a happier, more confident kid, both at school and at home. Suddenly he didn’t have to fight so hard. The kid that teachers used to call and complain about was suddenly behaving better in class. His literature teacher, who had Dillon as a student before and after brain training, told me my son was a different kid. In chemistry, he did so well that he started tutoring other kids. He actually told me, “Mom, this stuff is easy.” I’d never heard that before! His final year of school, he was taking the kinds of tough classes he never would have attempted before brain training, including honors chemistry and an advanced calculus class. To this day he’ll try something new and say, “Mom, before LearningRx I couldn’t have done that.” You can say that again.

People we can help The real value of brain training is measured by its power to improve lives. Struggling Students: Brain training attacks learning problems at the cause and strengthens weak skills. This makes learning easier and self-esteem and confidence skyrocket. Lifelong struggles can be overcome in only a few weeks of brain training.

Career Adults: Learning challenges are presented with every new job or potential promotion. Brain training can strengthen weak skills at any age. Faster learning is a significant career advantage and can open otherwise inaccessible doors.

High-Achieving Students: Brain training uncovers hidden learning potential and maximizes already strong learning skills in advanced students. Enhancing thinking and reasoning speed truly gives advanced students an unmatched competitive edge.

Senior Adults: Natural aging does impact memory and reasoning skills, but these declines are not inevitable. Brain training takes advantage of cognitive reserve and the brain’s ability to change — its lifelong ability to build new pathways, memory, and reasoning “power centers” — to reverse or slow down the effects of aging.

Preschool to First-Grade Students: Brain training with LearningRx’s LiftOff program eliminates any hidden skill weaknesses before they have a chance to dampen that enthusiasm, hinder learning, and create frustration. School success is virtually guaranteed. College-Age Students: Brain training helps students hit their college years in full stride, and avoid the sense of being overwhelmed. Maximize your college investment with brain training.

Accident Victims: Specific brain training exercises quickly rebuild individual cognitive skills lost due to traumatic brain injury. Training rehabilitates the brain and restores lost mental function by allocating new neurons, synapses, and pathways to compensate for any damaged areas and loss of function.
