New Town Councillors, New Leadership, New Direction for the Town of Fishers | J. Andy Murphy The word CHANGE has several different meanings including: To go back, to make a shift, to alter, or to move forward with transformation. Last November, the community of Fishers voted for change that would indeed incorporate the definition of moving forward from that of being a town to that of becoming a city. This change has brought together a new leadership team who will be responsible for developing a strategic plan that will lead the new city forward. It has been a documented journey with many ups and downs, but the citizens of Fishers made the final call. The history of Fishers will once again be expanded in 2015, when Fishers residents elect their own nine-member City Council and their first Mayor who will take office in January of 2016. This is a historic time in Indiana history. From humble beginnings … The Town of Fishers, Indiana, formerly known as Fishers Station and originally as Fishers Switch, came into being in June of 1872 when Salathiel Fisher divided his land into town lots. In those days, it was common for new communities to spring up along railroads. Fishers was no exception, hence, the early reference to a train station or ‘switch.’ The railroad made its way through in 1851 bringing jobs and new settlers, eventually extending to Chicago in the early 1870’s when Fishers Switch was platted. Over the years, Fishers’ population grew slowly to 388 by the 1960 census when rail shipment declined. The relocation of Indiana Highway 37 to the east side of town and the subsequent connection with I-69 insured the future growth of Fishers as a commercial and residential center. The Town of Fishers would soon become a fast-growing suburb of Indianapolis. Fall Creek Township became the site of a consolidation of area schools. The development of Geist Reservoir in Fall Creek Township during the 1980’s also added to the area’s growth. With the continued extension of sanitary sewers eastward under I-69 and with stable interest rates, the population increased from 7,187 in 1990 to 37,835 by March of 2000; 52,390 in 2003 and to 78,651 in 2010. This growth has set the stage for the future of Fishers as a city… In the meantime, the Town of Fishers has a new Town Council President, John Weingardt, and a new Vice President, Pete Peterson – two very capable business leaders who bring a new vision to the development process of a new city. It could be looked at as a daunting task, but in listening to them discuss the responsibilities that are ahead of them, one feels the dynamic energy and seamless flow of business economics that will one day make Fishers one of the largest and most successful cities in Indiana. “There are indeed many challenges ahead of our entire team, but we understand and look forward to doing what our citizens expect of us. We intend to concentrate on economic growth by adding jobs and new business development; moving forward with an exciting downtown redevelopment plan; utilizing the green space in front of Town Hall; and being open to needs of our community,” said an expressive Weingardt. “Fishers has so much potential and room to expand in our zip codes. We have wonderful schools and land available that invites new development opportunities,” adds Peterson with a rapid-fire presentation that is contagious.

FAMOUS RESIDENTS OF FISHERS

Both Weingardt and Peterson are newly elected representatives, winning their seats in November, 2011. With fellow town council rookies Rene Cox and Mike Colby, the runway leading up to the first mayoral election is sure to be full of change.

• Reggie Miller and Austin Croshere, former Indiana Pacers players

One thing is clear, the council seats are filled with individuals who are dedicated to the tasks in front of them and who were responsible for decisions that gained national attention.

• Dahntay Jones, current Indiana Pacers player

Some of these accomplishments include:

• Zach Randolph, Memphis Grizzlies player

• Top 100 Best Places to Live in America (#12 Ranking) – Money Magazine

• Alan Henderson, former Atlanta Hawks player • Rosevelt Colvin, NFL player, formerly of the Houston Texans, Chicago Bears and New England Patriots

• Forbes 11th Best Place to Move • Family Circle names Fishers one of the 10 Best Towns for Families

• Named a “Playful City USA” Community by KaBOOM!

• John Teerlinck, Indianapolis Colts Defensive Line coach

• Named Safest City in the Nation by CQ Press in their City Crime Rankings 2011-2012: Crime in Metropolitan America reports

• Tony Gwynn, former San Diego Padres player • Kevin Fertig, professional wrestler

interesting way, too. After graduating from high school early, she crammed all the college classes she could into her course load and graduated at the young age of 19. The plan was to follow the footsteps of her father in international manufacturing. One little thing got in the way: A baby. Regina married her high school sweetheart at 18 and had her first child at 19. She says it was being broke that led her to learn how to repair computers. “It’s amazing what broke will teach you to do,” she laughs.

geek in pink

Over the years, her computer repair experience increased. One night in 2005, there was a knock on her door. She opened it to find a man and woman holding their sick computer. Someone at Office Depot who had only Regina’s address referred them to her and they were desperate to recover data that they feared was gone for good. Regina worked a minor miracle and was able to recover the data. That pivotal moment made her decide to start her business. She says, “I had so many people coming to me at that point that the business pretty much started itself.” Now she needed a name. “I wanted in the name to relay a friendly, open resolution to your technology problems.” Her husband suggested, “Miller Computer Associates;” Regina’s idea was “Geek in Pink.” “It came down to me trying to find a word that would imply technology and a word that would imply a female,” she says.

| Jody Veldkamp he Webster’s Dictionary definition of the word “geek” doesn’t fit self-proclaimed “Geek in Pink” Regina Miller. She is the polar opposite of the stereotypical nerdy guy with tape on his glasses and a pocket protector. Although knowledgeable about computers, she has broken the mold on geekdom. She has broken the mold in many other areas, too.

t

Let’s start with the fact that she’s a woman in what is normally considered a man’s domain: Computers. She got there in an

She started with one employee, herself, and a drop-off spot. Today, she has six employees, a storefront location in Center Grove, and a drop-off location at Mail Post in Fishers. Geek in Pink has grown phenomenally, doubling every year since opening in 2005, except for 2010 when it tripled. The number of on-site jobs Geek in Pink does in Geist and surrounding areas has grown dramatically, and Regina is exploring opening additional store fronts. Her success did not come easily. Not only has it required sacrifice and long hours away from family, but also as a “girl” in a man’s world, she has had to prove herself. She says in the beginning she would get calls from women and arrive at their home to find husbands that were dismissive of her abilities. Once she proved herself by fixing their problem, they often referred her to their businesses and that helped Geek in Pink take off. Tech repair is still a man’s world, evidenced by the fact that only one percent of all her job applicants are women. She’s doing her part to change that by teaching classes and doing career days in schools. Four of her six employees are women; but she says she hires the most qualified applicant, regardless of their gender. Call it adapting or breaking the mold, either way Regina has done it and done it well.

SPRING BREAk is right around the corner!

T

he last of the decorations are down, the wrapping paper and presents are put away, and now you can fully concentrate on your next big event on the calendar: Spring Break! That’s right; it’s less than three months away and not too soon to start planning. Half the battle is deciding where to go and your wallet often dictates that. There are many choices both near and far.

FLORIDA

Florida

Let’s start with far. Florida is popular with Hoosiers, whether it is the Atlantic or Gulf side. Disney is a traditionally great Spring Break destination and has a few new things to offer in 2013 including the expansion of Fantasyland and the opening of the Art of Animation Resort.

CRUISES

Cruises are a wonderful economical way to take the whole family on vacation, but Spring Break does book up fast. There are few better bargains than a cruise. For one price, you get your accommodations, unbelievable food, and entertainment, not to mention all those fun ports of call. I always say that cruising is great because you unpack once and wake up somewhere new every day! There are more ports than ever to sail from, many of them within driving distance. Several cruise lines sail from New Orleans, which is a fun city to visit in itself. Depart from Charleston, New York City, or Baltimore, which is only 600 miles from Indy. Galveston, Texas is a relatively new, but growing port. Of course, there are all the Florida ports including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, and Port Canaveral. Some cruises leave from San Juan, Puerto Rico. You can choose from three to 12 night cruises with hundreds of different itineraries. An Eastern Caribbean cruise takes you to the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, San Juan, and St. Maarten. Western Caribbean itineraries visit Mexico, Grand Cayman, Belize, Honduras, and Jamaica. While Southern Caribbean cruises visit Barbados, Aruba, St. Lucia, Grenada and other exotic ports of call farther south.

ALL-INCLUSIVE RESORTS Cruise All-Inclusive Resort

All-inclusive resorts can also be a nice way to go. One of our favorite family trips was to a beautiful resort in Costa Rica, which is a very popular place to visit now.

CLOSE TO HOME

If you are thinking that somewhere closer to home is in order for 2013, there are fun cities to visit within driving distance. Chicago with its excellent museums and Cincinnati, which also has lots to offer, were recently included in Lonely Planet’s Top 10 U.S. Travel Destinations. Just to the south is Louisville, which has become a museum city in its own right. A little farther south on I-65 gets you to Nashville or you can head a bit east to Pigeon Forge and stay in the Smoky Mountains. St. Louis is fun and is less than four hours west of us by car. Or just stay home and get to know Indy! We have the Children’s Museum, the Zoo, and The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, to mention just a few. If you haven’t spent time seeing the sites here, Spring Break might be a great time to do it. | geist c o m m u n i t y n e w s l e t t e r J afneu ba ru r ya r2y0 1230 1 |3 carmel

| Janet C. Streibel . Photos by Brenda Staples ost of us try to do the best job we can just to keep up in our hectic daily routine of life. We try to stay ahead of the competition in our career, coping with long hours and learning new technology. We attempt to balance the demands of family, focusing on our kids and their activities. And then there are some in their spare time, who try to help give back to the community because they know it’s the right thing to do. Yet there’s a select few who have excelled way beyond the call of duty in all these areas of life reaching their pinnacle of excellence. Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting one such exemplary individual—Matt Troyer, a Geist resident who makes it look rather easy achieving these goals with grace, dignity, loyalty, and confidence.

M

Currently, Matt is president of the Geist Half Marathon Inc. (www.geisthalf.com). In fact, he was one of its founding members. Before he stepped up to help Geist Half, he was president of Prevail (www.prevailinc.com) for eight years after serving on the board for two. Furthermore, he served on the Board of Directors and Executive Board of the Hamilton Southeastern Foundation (HSSF) for three years. In short, if there is a Geist-area charity with far-reaching impact, Matt has probably served on its board. In addition to helping in the community, Matt is a corporate attorney and partner at Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP. “Matt is a talented attorney who graciously donates his skills and time to many community organizations,” says Eileen Pritchard, former Fishers Town Council member. “The time and energy he put into the Prevail Board, and his service on Town Boards, is a model for serving your community.” Incidentally, he served on the Town of Fishers Board of Zoning Appeals and Town of Fishers Redevelopment Commission.

Actions that Prevail

Prevail is a program providing assistance to victims of crime and abuse in Hamilton and surrounding counties. Beth Gehlhausen, founder of Prevail Inc., can not say enough good things about Matt. “He is a wonderful man who cares about his community. He grew to really understand the organization and had a deep commitment to the people we served which doesn’t always happen with board members. Matt worked tirelessly, was very engaged and passionate about helping Prevail. He was always very organized which was a big plus with our fundraising efforts and his negotiating skills were a huge part of resolving an obstacle that arose when securing a large gift.” With the funds from this large gift, Matt went one step further. He created a foundation. He says, “It was very important to me that we use this multimillion dollar gift to achieve long-term sustainability for Prevail. I was concerned that if we didn’t, the

“When I took over the board, I had two visions ... My first vision was to put on a great event that people would want to come back to year in and year out, one that the community could be proud of and that the participants would want to make an annual event, not just a one time deal. The second vision I had was to raise absolutely as much as money as we possibly could for the schools.” money would just be spent in a relatively short term.” “When I think of Matt, what stands out are his leadership skills and his compassion for the people that Prevail serves,” says Glenda Garrison, former Board of Director for Prevail. ”It’s such a small world. Even before I met Matt, I actually knew his wife, Kim, first. She was my son’s third grade teacher in Carmel. And my son loved her.”

His Time with Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation Still Lives On

The HSSF provides scholarships and teacher grants within the Hamilton Southeastern district. One of Matt’s main achievements was implementing the ExactTarget email system which enables communicating with parents throughout the year. “Matt is a visionary and strategist, very skilled with volunteer driven organizations,” says Tim Calvert, past president of HSSF. He continues, “Matt consistently brings a business minded approach focused squarely on organizational development and improvement. The Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation has benefited greatly from his leadership and partnership efforts with the Foundation and the Geist Half Marathon.” Although he may not currently be on the HSSF board, his efforts with raising funds through GHM are certainly paying off well as HSSF benefits from every dollar raised by the Geist Half Marathon.

Backtracking His Path

Growing up in Carmel, Matt attended Carmel High School where he played several sports including running cross country. As a student there, he probably never dreamed he would someday become one of the founders and president of the Geist Half Marathon. He also probably never thought he would find his future wife, but he did. He started dating Kim during his senior year and they were both on the prom court. february 2013 |

The Troyer family in their Cambridge kitchen (left to right) Matt, Clay, Emily, and Kim. After earning a business degree (accounting) at Miami University, he worked for Deloitte & Touche for three years before going to law school at Indiana University. He and his high school sweetheart got married and eventually built a home in the Springs of Cambridge at Geist. Matt would go running within the neighborhood and think to himself about what a perfect setting Geist would be for a community race. Coincidentally, he happened to read an article in the Geist Community Newsletter about how others were going to meet at Burd Ford to start planning the inaugural Geist Half Marathon.

Going an Extra Mile for Geist Half Marathon and in Perfect Time

During the early stages of planning, we needed a new lawyer to volunteer and help us,” recalls Tom Britt, publisher of the Geist Community Newsletter and a founding member of the Geist Half Marathon. “The attorney who had been helping us early on was leaving for another job in Texas on a Friday. That same day, I got a phone call from Matt saying that he wanted to help out. I told him, ‘Matt your timing is impeccable.’” Tom admires many things about Matt, like how he donated so much of his time and legal work behind the 501c3 application. Due to his efforts, Matt and his firm saved the Geist Half thousands of dollars. “He’s a true turnaround artist,” Tom added. “A couple years ago, we faced the worst race financially we had experienced. 18

Matt stepped in as president, and as a result, the Geist Half had our most profitable year yet in 2012. He’s been a linchpin in the success of our growth and our organization’s success.”

His Visions Became Real

“When I took over the board, I had two visions,” says Matt. “My first vision was to put on a great event that people would want to come back to year in and year out, one that the community could be proud of and that the participants would want to make an annual event, not just a one time deal. The second vision I had, was to raise absolutely as much as money as we possibly could for the schools.” His visions have become a reality. With the $80,000 netted in last year’s race, a total of $60,000 was donated to the HSE and Lawrence schools. The remaining balance was assigned to the Geist Half Marathon Grant Program, empowering teachers or parent volunteers who wish to organize a health and wellness initiative for local children. The applicants must live in Marion, Hamilton, or Hancock counties and the application is on the Geist Half Marathon website. Matt explains, “With the help of our talented board, our main focus this year is to institutionalize the processes so that the race will not be dependent on those of us who started it.” Tom, now Executive Director of the Geist Half adds, “We want this event to live way past us so that our grand kids can run this race and extend the valuable memories.”

On the Home Front

Matt manages to find time for his family and other organizations. He has been a travel soccer coach for the Fishers Soccer Club, coaching teams for both of his kids, Clay, a seventh grader at HSE Junior High and Emily, a sophomore at Cathedral. Since Matt gives back to the community so eagerly it’s not surprising that his wife, Kim Troyer, also contributes her time. Her main community involvement is at the Christamore House Guild, where she is also a member. She also volunteers with the Geist Half wherever she is needed such as with handing out flyers, filing in at packet pick-up, or delivering coffee to early morning volunteers on race day. She is also active with the Fishers Soccer Club, serving as a team manager for many years. Kim, a realtor, has worked as an independent broker for 13 years. As of last year, she has joined Keller Williams and is enjoying her new affiliation. She says, “It’s a great group of people to work with.”

First year women's winner Lisa Verona (left) receives her award from Matt Troyer and Tom Britt in 2008. “The best way to sum up how I feel about Matt is that he is a great support network whether it is for his friends, his family, co-workers, or those that he volunteers with for Geist Half or any of the other boards.”

At only 42 years of age, Matt has accomplished a lifetime of achievements. While his friends and associates at Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP, the Town of Fishers, Prevail Inc., Hamilton Southeastern School Foundation, and Geist Half Marathon all rave about Matt, perhaps his biggest fans are at home. His wife Kim admires his ability to approach all facets of life in a creative way.

Scotty's Closes, "Detour" Moves In | Pat Carlini It was out with the old and in with the new this year for one popular Geist restaurant. Scotty’s Lakehouse at the corner of Fall Creek and Brooks School Road – where many restaurants have called home over the past few years – closed down. Almost overnight, the “coming soon” sign went up for “Detour American Grille and Bar” to move in. Unlike some other restaurant closures, this one was not due to slow business. “We were happy with the sales,“ says Mark Maddox, co-owner of the MSCB Group who owns the Scotty’s location and other properites. The company owned by Scott Wise (Scotty’s) had its management contracts terminated for the Lakehouse on

December 15 of last year due to “financial-management-related issues.” Scotty’s was given the opportunity to continue for 90 days but opted out and left at the end of the year. “We wanted to make a smooth transition for the employees and the loyal clientele of the Lakehouse,” says Maddox. Detour has a loyal following as well in Carmel. The Grille and Bar boasts of fresh, made-from-scratch menu items and fun specialty drinks such as the “Traffic Jam” which is a Bacardi dragon berry rum concoction. “The inside will be the same, just the colors will change," says Maddox. “We would also like to do a little more with the outside dining at the Geist location." So, for now, fans looking for the famous dill chips may have to head to the Scotty’s on 96th Street or the downtown locations, while Detour takes a turn into Geist bringing its own popular menu items and fun times to the neighborhood. For more information, you can visit their facebook page “Detour – American Grille”.

J. Andy Murphy | Photos by Brian Brosmer Paint is, in so many ways, the fabric of life that we may not always appreciate until the time comes to make home or business improvements. No one knows the painting profession better than Todd Cartmel, owner of The Painting Edge, which has been in operation since 1996. His journey to starting his own painting company began at an early age with stepping stones to success through experience gained as a teenager. “I learned how to paint when I was in high school working for a local company that was willing to give a young kid a chance. I painted during the summer months, weekends, and on holiday breaks for 2 years and then was accepted to Indiana University. I majored in Business Entrepreneurship which gave me a solid foundation leg up to one day start my own company. During my first summer break from college, I landed a job as a crew supervisor to oversee and work along side 4 of their company employees. I was able to interact with customers on a daily basis in this position. It gave me insight and experience that eventually allowed me to take the plunge into starting my own company (The Painting Edge) with the support of my father,” Todd said. Todd is a perfect example of someone who learned his craft from the ground up, working with professionals who showed him the right way to be a painter and a boss. When you listen to his story, you know the effort he put into his company and why he gained customers by word of mouth and an effective, low-budget advertising campaign to attract new clients. “The Painting Edge is more than just a painting company. Today, we are a full-service painting, drywall, and staining company as well. Our interior painting and drywall operates year round, while our exterior services run from March 1

through the middle of December. We also have cross services with several general contractors that use us for remodels and basement finishes,” he adds. So how has paint changed over the years? “Paint technology has come a very long way since I first started my company 17 years ago. Oil-based paint then was considered the best paint to use for both interior and exterior. Latex/acrylic paint kept getting better and better, but eventually oil paint became a dinosaur because of the smell and slow dry times. It was finally banned because it was bad for the environment. Acrylics today are amazing, especially on the exterior. Today, I can guarantee that my exterior painting job will last 8 to 10 years with a one-coat application. Technology has made this possible,” he said. Todd is certainly a shining example of someone who found his calling early in life and is a well-qualified professional who stands behind his services. So if you are in the market for a painting professional or even have questions about paint, The Painting Edge should be your first call. Tips from the Painting Edge in choosing a paint color: 1) Pick a co lor that yo u really lik your decor e with in mind.

2) Stay awa y from too many colo one family rs in . 3) Rememb er that pain t will look different a t certain ti mes of the under diffe day and rent lightin g condition s. 4) Don’t be afraid to a sk paint profession als for their advice as th work with ey paint prod ucts every day. 5) Take tim e exploring th before ma king a decis e color charts ion. Lawrence Township School Foundation's New Leader, cori Korn

|Kara Reibel . Photos by Brenda Staples The new Executive Director of the Lawrence Township School Foundation, Cori Korn, is focused on “igniting” the power of community. With public education facing financial challenges nationally, this places an even greater emphasis on the importance of community involvement. Having raised three kids in the district and seeing first hand the excellent opportunities Lawrence schools provide, Korn brings her valuable handson experience to her job. “Volunteering over the years at the kids’ elementary school, middle school, and high school, I was consistently impressed at the dedication and commitment level of our educators,” said Korn. Cori and her husband, Bill, have three children: Brad, a sophomore at Butler University, and twins, Margo and Maddie, both juniors at Lawrence Central. All three attended Lawrence schools since grade school. “We have had the best experience with Lawrence Township Schools,” said Korn. Her hopes are that other families have similar experiences. Cori Korn brings a high level of enthusiasm to her job. “I have been overwhelmed by the support for the mission of our Foundation,” said Korn. “The caring and compassion shown by the educators is exemplary. I am energized by all that is going on within the Foundation.” She is meeting the demands and challenges of her position with a strong, positive outlook. Korn only speaks of the possibilities for the future, and you can feel her excitement for the Foundation. The LTSF was formed thirty years ago to provide funds for creative classroom grants, which are “creative and innovative projects that would not be supported by tax dollars.” While the LTSF continues this tradition, several other programs have been added over the years to meet the evolving needs of the students and classrooms. Since its inception, the LTSF has given back $40 million dollars to the Lawrence Township schools.

It is through programs such as AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) and MAC (My Achievement Center)that the LTSF is helping students prepare for their 13th year. “Many of our graduates will be first generation to attend and graduate from college,” says Korn. “The importance of these programs can make all the difference for students whether they attend a 4-year college, trade school, or enter the working world post-graduation.” Providing these programs and others supported by the Foundation requires the financial support of the community. “Investing in students’ futures is one of the best means to reinforce a strong foundation in a community,” said Korn. Capitalizing on the “power of community,” the Foundation is grateful for every contribution. “Whether it is $5 or $5,000, every dollar counts. All donations provide support and strengthen our schools,” said Korn.

“We have made some changes to the Gala, such as bringing the event to a host location within our district. This year’s event will be held on March 15 at EventzPlus in Castleton. The theme is ‘Back to the Future’ which will celebrate current academic, athletic, and performing arts successes while building a foundation for the future,” said Austin. The Honorary Chair of the event is Troy Knoderer who is principal at Belzer Middle School. Another popular fundraising event for

the LTSF is their annual golf outing, Fore the Kids, June 6, held at Old Oakland Golf Club. It is these events and generous contributions made to the Foundation that make it possible to continue their programs and scholarship support. Through a few annual fund-raising events, grants, and generous contributions, the Foundation is able to live up to its mission: To ignite the power of community, connecting education and philanthropy to provide the resources

Expert investment management for portfolios of $500,000 or more.

Other programs supported by the LTSF include Up and Running, which is an after-school running club offered at all schools in the district. “This past Christmas, 425 students represented Lawrence Township in the Jingle Bell Run,” reports Korn. The club runners will also participate in the Geist Half this May. “Promoting exercise and teamwork at the same time is wonderful for these students, regardless of age,” continued Korn. When Cori took over as Executive Director of the LTSF in late September, she quickly enlisted veteran Philanthropist Barb Austin to be the Event Director for this year’s annual Gala, one of the Foundation’s main fund-raising events. Austin, a graduate from LC, takes pride in her community. Barb and her husband, Jim, have participated in numerous fund-raising events in the community over the years. Having two daughters at schools in the district adds to that sense of responsibility. Lexi is a freshman at LC, and Claire is in 5th grade at Indian Creek Elementary.

catch of the day

| Neal G. Moore This is a fishing story, but it’s not about the one that got away. About a year ago, Tom Frank, 32, cast a metaphorical net for the chance to appear on a TV fishing show. The Fishers resident submitted a video audition tape for himself and brothers Michael, 34, and Sam, 37, to appear as guest fishermen on the nationallytelevised Bass2Billfish program airing on NBC Sports Outdoor network. “On the video, I included pictures of us fishing and what we’d caught,” Tom said. “I figured that would be the end of it.” However, a second audition tape was requested, and it showed host Peter Miller just what he was looking for. “I’ve never had three brothers on the show. It made for a great dynamic: competition, camaraderie – all dedicated to their dad, who had passed away recently,” said Miller. While some fact-challenged fishermen are famously prone to exaggerate (“You should have seen the size of it!”), that’s hardly the case when the Franks talk about their amazing experience. 30

Consider: the trio stayed four nights at a luxury hotel in the Florida Keys; dined on meals fit for a king; received about $500 each in clothing and other gifts; fished two days using state-ofthe-art tackle and boating equipment – and didn’t spend a dime. “They took care of everything possible,” Tom explained. “All they said was ’It’s going to be nice weather so bring appropriate clothes and sunscreen.’” A year elapsed before the show was taped, but Michael Frank, who lives in Indianapolis, says the wait was worth it. “That’s the great thing about Bass2Billfish. They take regular people and show them the world-class fishing available in Florida. They call it a fishing, travel, reality show. He was happy to show these Midwest kids the great fishing in Florida.” The episode was shot in the Keys off the coast of Islamorada, Florida, with the intention of landing sailfish. On Day One they saw a few, but none were caught. “Sometimes you get skunked. It happens,” said Tom, who did hook a rather substantial consolation prize – a 500-pound Hammerhead shark. Like most

TV fishing shows, Bass2Billfish practices “catch and release,” and after lifting the shark for a measurement and photos, the crew freed the Hammerhead. “We watched it dive back to the bottom of the ocean. That was cool,” Tom said. Day Two started equally slowly with only tuna and barracuda hitting the dead squid being used as bait. “You have a local guide, a TV host, a cameraman, a second chase boat – they’re just staring at you,” said Michael. “There’s a lot of time, effort, and money. We started to feel a little pressure.” But that changed when Sam Frank, a Grand Rapids, Michigan, resident, hooked a 350-pound Dusky shark which, shall we say, wasn’t too pleased. “He was flipping hard, and seeing the business end of a shark up close certainly got our attention,” remembered Tom. Michael eventually landed the target – a massive, beautiful sailfish. “I would rate their fishing skills at a high level – a strong nine,” offered Miller, now in his fourth season hosting the show that reaches 78 million households.

Changes in Child Support Laws | Billy Horvath On July 1, 2012, a new law went into effect in Indiana changing child support law dramatically and affecting families receiving and/or paying child support. The new law lowered the age of emancipation — the age at which a parent no longer has to pay child support — in Indiana from 21 to 19, putting Indiana’s law in sync with the majority of the other states around the country that use an emancipation age of 18 or 19. What does this mean for Indiana families? Before enacting this law, a parent subject to an Indiana court child support order had to pay child support until a child reached the age of 21. The new law generally allows a parent to modify or terminate a child support order when a child reaches the age of 19, unless a child is disabled. This means that the majority of child support payors will not be obligated to pay child support for any child that is nineteen years old, even if the child is dependent on his or her parents and in college. Two years may seem like a small and insignificant change, but

the new law could make a world of difference to children and parents experiencing an abrupt ending to child support payments. The new child support changes are not automatic, and parents seeking to modify or terminate child support will have to go back to court to change child support payments. It is also important to note that the new law does not apply to child support orders from states other than Indiana, and it does not affect any outstanding child support arrearages as those amounts are still due. In addition to lowering the age of emancipation, the new law changes the time period for parties to address educational expenses. For any child receiving child support under an order issued before July 1, 2012, a request for contribution for educational expenses must be filed before the child turns 21. On the other hand, for any child receiving child support under an order issued after June 30, 2012, a request for contribution for educational expenses must be filed before the child turns 19. These changes are important because the failure to timely file a petition for educational expenses will most likely result in the petition being dismissed as being untimely. As a result of the new law, parents with a child approaching the age of emancipation or planning to attend college should plan accordingly and determine how the new law will affect them.

New Resolutions? | Tracey Meister

OK… I must confess that I’m still having a dialogue with myself that sounds like this: I haven’t set any specific health and fitness New Year’s resolutions yet! To be or not to be… healthier; tighter; more rested; more consistent; and more dedicated? Maybe I take resolution making way too far, but what’s the point of making meaningless resolutions? I also feel a little anxious about declaring my “potential” resolutions out loud because then – OMG – I have to do them. Yikes! While I clutter my brain measuring the pros and cons of penning my own resolutions (and nursing a self-created tension headache), I am distracted as I wonder who else has made resolutions.

GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS:  Be Specific – Map out exactly

what your goals are, how you are going to achieve them, and when you will complete them. Limit yourself to 1-3 changes at a time to increase the odds of success. Too much change at once can be overwhelming; however, many people do find success with the ‘all or nothing’ approach. Personally, I have had success both ways but tend to burn out when I use the latter approach. Example: I am committing to 40 minutes of exercise 4 times a week; I will drink 50 ounces of water a day and I will eat 3-5 cups of fruits and veggies a day. One goal for the year may be to complete the Geist Half Marathon or 5K.  Know the WHY – Know you! Understand your motivation for the goal (get real with yourself). WHY are you setting a New Year‘s resolution? Are you preparing for a special event? Are you unhappy with the way your clothes fit? Did you receive unfavorable results from a recent doctor visit? Do you think it would be neat to walk your first Geist 5K with family members or friends? Did you hate the way you looked in Christmas pictures? You get the point.

NEWSLETTER

If you answered with a resounding “I have” and are on your way, I’m sending you positive energy for a truly successful outcome. If you have not, the inspiration for changing your habits to become healthier in 2013 could be just around the corner. In either case, I offer the following guidelines to help tackle your health/fitness goals. After 10 years as a personal trainer and Body Fusion teacher, I can truly relate to the dedication, sweat, and tears which are mandatory in creating new habits (tears for me are mostly food related – eradicating refined sugar from my diet saddens me, to be exact).

 Arm Yourself with Knowledge – Habits take an average of 66 days to create or break according to a study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology by Lilly et al (2009). Knowing this guideline, be prepared for the first 66 days to require extra determination. Example: If I am lucky enough to chill on the couch to catch up on my recorded show or watch a Colts football game, when I get really tired, instead of going to bed, I find my way into the kitchen. And for what? Unconscious eating. I know this about myself, so if I haven’t pre-cleaned and sliced veggies to dip in humus or have some “dessert”-tasting yogurt on hand, I’m heading straight for the chocolate chips.  Be Your Own Warrior of Health – Habits are HARD to break, so become your own warrior/cheerleader. Take responsibility for yourself. This means being aware of food intake and getting adequate sleep. Nobody is going to be more interested in your success than YOU. Example: Post your goals in the kitchen and on a bathroom mirror to serve as daily motivators!

 Re-evaluate – Every 2-3 weeks, reevaluate your goals. What is working and what is not? If something isn‘t working, ask yourself “Why?” and “How can I fix it?” (Hint: Back to Step 2 – understand the WHY). If you find your resolutions are easily obtainable, maybe you set your sights too low. Your goals should be challenging but not so much that you sabotage yourself! Example: 40 minutes of exercise 4 times a week has been easily accomplished, so I will add a fifth day of exercise for at least 30 minutes. Maybe you lack motivation or understanding of what to do. My advice is to hire a TRAINER (sorry, I had to plug trainers somewhere in this column).  Be Resilient – If you break a resolution/goal a few times, FORGIVE yourself and commit to get back on track. When a quarterback makes a bad throw, beating himself up for the next 3 plays will NOT contribute to the overall WIN!  Keep a journal - Keep a journal of your goals, food intake, and exercise output. Include notes about your emotional wellbeing each day, too. Include recording your daily moods using a number system of “face drawings” (i.e. smile/frown/stress face, etc.) so you can

Social Media ROI | Eric Anderson The biggest questions I get at my workshops on social media are, “How do you know if it is working?” and “What is my expected return on investment (ROI)?” Business owners feel if they tweet, post, and link, there should and will be a tangible benefit. They expect marketing to get something they can measure at the end of the week, month, or quarter. Can it be done? Definitely! It all depends on what you want to measure. Revenue is the key indicator businesses would like to attribute to social media. Measuring revenue, however, is not direct. If someone goes to a Facebook page and “Likes” a brand, then finds the brand on Google and finally buys it from Amazon, who gets credit? Facebook? Google? Amazon? The solution to the ROI question is to not look just at revenue. Measuring awareness, followers, customer service, AND revenue should be part of your social media strategy.

to your site. If they come to your store, ask them how they heard about you. Facebook? Twitter? Blog? If you’re providing valuable, interesting, or humorous content, people will be driven to your site.

Customer Service

I recently tweeted (late at night) that I was considering buying some shoes from Nordstrom. One of their reps saw the mention of the company name, sent me a link to their website, and told me about an upcoming sale. I tweeted them back to tell them how much I appreciated the service. Now, I’m a “Nordy” for life. As with any initiative, it is important to know if it is working. Don’t use social media because it’s a “cool, new technology.” Incorporate it because it helps you meet your objectives. Just make sure and define what those objectives are. Scientifically Speaking, of course.

Here are a few examples:

Awareness

Are more people talking about you? Use tools like Tweetdeck (www.tweetdeck. com) or hootsuite (www.hootsuite.com) to measure. Pick a time period to see if there are more mentions of your brand (in your local area) than there were 30 – 60 days ago. Then measure if those mentions are positive or negative.

Followers

Do you have more people following you than you did 30 – 60 days ago? Make sure the people following you are the right people. It’s okay to have your wife and pastor following you, but you need industry leaders, customers, and leads. When people come to your store or visit your site, let them know you are on Twitter and the benefits if they follow your brand.

Traffic

One of your goals with your social media is to drive people to your website or store to buy your products. Use a tool like Google Analytics to measure traffic february 2013 |

Sophia Saucerman with her NFL Punt, Pass, Kick ball that she earned after competing in the half-time NFL PPK half-time show.

Local Girl Punts, Passes and Kicks Her Way to Atlanta | Kara Reibel The NFL Experience took on a literal meaning for the Saucerman family after attending this fun event held here in Indianapolis last year for the Super Bowl. Sophia, now a 6th grader at Heritage Christian School and a Geist resident, loved the Play60 area activities. “After she nailed a 40-yard field goal, her dad, Gus, considered her a natural for the NFL’s Punt, Pass, Kick competition.” said her mom, Pam Saucerman. The NFL Punt, Pass, Kick (PPK) celebrates its 51st anniversary this year and is the oldest youth program affiliated with the NFL. Three million girls and boys ages 6-15 compete from July to January each year in this free competition, making it one of the largest youth sports programs in the country. 40

Having played soccer since she was five years old, Sophia, who currently plays on a U12 club team with FC Pride Soccer Club, took to the competition like a natural. Confident in her abilities, Sophia signed up to compete in the NFL PPK. She won the local and regional competitions, qualifying to compete at the national level in Atlanta during the 2nd weekend of playoffs when Atlanta hosted Seattle. The day of the national finals for the PPK was Sophia’s 12th birthday. What a way to celebrate! Sophia and her family were flown down to Atlanta and had a VIP experience. The families participating in the finals visited the Atlanta Aquarium, competed in the NFL PPK and were introduced at half-time of the game on national television! Watching her big sister compete and seeing how much fun the entire experience has been, Sierra said she is ready to give it a try next year! A Saucerman Dynasty? Perhaps!

“You can’t fake sushi,” laughs Joseph. “Under any sauce or rice, there has to be good, fresh fish.”

So sushi fans, get ready! The Tegry Sushi Bistro should be ready for business sometime in February!

Joseph says they fly fresh fish in from Hawaii. During my visit a package of fish packed in dry ice arrived at the door! “It can be here overnight,” says Joseph.

Remember the days when Geist residents longed for a sushi house of any kind to move into the neighborhood? Well, today there are finally a couple options nearby, and now another new Sushi spot is coming to town. You may have gotten a salmon roll post card in the mail announcing The Tegry Bistro Sushi Bar (a favorite in Brownsburg for 8 years and at Traders Point) is opening in the Geist Pavilion at 116th Street and Olio Road. “We are excited to open in Geist,” says Joseph Dagvadorj, co-owner and manager of Traders Point Tegry Bistro. “We like to move into areas where we

Tegry sushi offers a number of fun and creatively-named rolls such as the Lollipop Roll, the Graduation Roll, and the popular crunchy Super Spider Roll. I did ask about one roll called the “Trish” Roll. “Sometimes a customer is such a regular, we

Cooper Tire Recycles Waste Oil in locally built furnace | Janet C. Striebel ooper Tire located in McCordsville at 96th Street and Olio Road, just teamed up with Supreme Heat in Westfield. Whereas Cooper Tire used to pay to have their waste oil hauled away, now they recycle it. Recently, they bought a furnace from Supreme Heat that allows them to burn oil in a special furnace within their shop.

“The garage is real warm, around 60 to 65 degrees. Without the furnace, it was about 40 degrees,” says Bob Williams, owner of Cooper Tire. With the warmer working environment, our crew can deliver better quality service and better car diagnostics.” Supreme Heat furnaces have been around since 1986 and were engineered by Roger Russell, president of Furnace Design Technology, LLC. After working with Russell 44

The staff at Cooper Tire are happy working in their warm garage. (Left to right) Mike Morris, Shepard, Welton, Brad Cantu and Rick Jackson. Distributing for 25 years, Roger encountered his share of problems from other brands. As a result, a combination of trouble-shooting complications from other furnace brands and on-the-job experience prompted Roger to patent his own design of Supreme Heat furnaces that are sold to distributors around the country. “We specialize in selling commercial furnaces that burn waste oil,” says Ron Russell, vice-president of Furnace Design Technology and son to Roger. “What people don’t realize is that waste oil is hazardous. If you produce it, you are responsible for it until it is disposed of properly.” In other words, if your truck is hauling away waste oil and gets into an accident with a spill, then your company is liable.

Why Not Burn It On Site?

Burning the waste oil on the premises from which it has accumulated makes perfect sense. Companies that compile crankcase oil and transmission fluid can generate free heat by burning oil in Supreme Heat furnaces. Ron adds, “Our furnaces burn the bad waste out of products, leaving ashes that can be put into a dumpster. Due to the economy and high

Comfort in Word-of-Mouth Advertising

Supreme Heat has built a reputation as having the most efficient and user-friendly furnaces in the business. Ron estimates that 90% of complications from units come from plugged lines (traces of metals in used oil). As a result, Supreme Heat offers two nozzle lines with each furnace that can be replaced by the customer very quickly.

“We do not advertise, so our business has grown by word of mouth. Our customers, like Cooper Tire, will hopefully refer us by passing along our outstanding product.” So far, Cooper Tire owner Bob Williams has already started to spread the word when he boasts, “After investigating different furnaces to buy, I decided to go with Supreme Heat because they manufacture them locally. Plus, these furnaces are easier to repair than others. The guys at Supreme Heat did a great job on service and installation.” For more information about Cooper Tire and the Supreme Heat Furnace, visit www.coopertiresatgeist.com and www.furnacedesigntechnology.com.
