NEW AMY BEVERLAND ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL

Ready to Lead

Jered Pennington, the new principal of Amy Beverland Elementary, looks forward to the new school year.

"I TRULY FELT CALLED TO COME TO AMY BEVERLAND IN THE WAKE OF WHAT EVERYONE HAD BEEN THROUGH EARLIER THIS YEAR. I WANT TO USE MY STRENGTHS AS A SUPPORTIVE PERSON TO HELP THE STUDENTS, STAFF, AND FAMILIES HEAL." Writer / Matt Keating

Jered Pennington, the new principal of Amy Beverland Elementary, believes he was drawn to lead the Indianapolis school. Pennington, the third principal at the school, is ready to take on the challenges of being the new leader. Susan Jordan, the previous principal, passed away on Jan. 26. "I truly felt called to come to Amy Beverland in the wake of what everyone had been through earlier this year," Pennington said. "I want to use my strengths as a supportive person to help

the students, staff and families heal. As I learned more about the school, the ever increasing diverse population, the fantastic teachers and supportive families here, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. I have continued to learn that what the stakeholders of Amy Beverland value, and what I value, are the same." Before coming to Amy Beverland Elementary, Pennington was a teacher for one year in the Avon School District and spent nine years at White River Elementary in Noblesville. He also spent four years at Promise Road Elementary where he was the assistant principal and a member of The Promise atGeist.com / AUGUST 2016 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 14

Elementary Vision Team. "Working on the Vision team was a great experience," Pennington stated. "It was a way to look at 21st century learning environments in flexible classroom spaces and bring a similar vision to reality." Pennington noted that other teachers and administrators were also dedicated to the program. "I owe my leadership experience to Promise Road Principal Kelly Treinen," Pennington said. "She empowered me as a co-principal of the building from the very beginning."

Pennington made the decision to go into education his senior year at Western Boone High School. He grew up in Thorntown. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) and his Master's degree and Administrator License from Indiana Wesleyan University. "When I was in high school, I was working as a cadet teacher at my childhood school and fell in love with teaching kids, and the field of education also a provided an opportunity to coach and be a part of athletics," he stated. "I still love sports and playing basketball and golf." Pennington lives in Noblesville with his wife, Christy, and sons, Jordan, a sophomore at Ball State studying architecture, and Caleb, an eighth grader at Noblesville East. He and the family take care of his mother who lives with the

family and receives ongoing care. They also have four dogs, Brody, Ulana, Stella and Maxy, and one cat, Annie. "It's a zoo," he laughed. Before he started working at Amy Beverland Elementary, Pennington attended a Staff Recognition Breakfast and was recognized with the Miller Legacy Award, presented by Noblesville Schools on June 2, his last day with Noblesville Schools. "I left Noblesville at 9 a.m. and arrived at Amy Beverland at 9:30 a.m. for my first meeting," Pennington said. "I had about a half hour between jobs, including the 20-minute drive." He does have a summer vacation planned before the school year starts. He has already been warmly received by

Amy Beverland's staff, students, parents and the local community. Pennington's immediate short-term goals include getting to know all of the stakeholders at the school. "I met approximately 50 different staff members by scheduling individual meetings on my first two days, and I immediately saw that they are proud of one another and this amazing school," Pennington said. "I want to build on this because I strongly believe that as good as we are, we can always get better."

Matt Keating is an instructional assistant and tutor at Amy Beverland Elementary and a freelance writer. He has won three Society of Professional Journalists awards. He previously worked for The Indianapolis Star, NUVO Newsweekly, and MZD Public Relations.

Annie Streit, a resident of Noblesville, IN, and a Ball State University graduate with a degree in Social Studies Education, is reaching out to kids about people with disabilities in a unique way. She has recently published her first children’s book titled Scooter and His Scoot Scoot. It is a heartwarming story about a joyful dog named Scooter. Scooter was born different, but with the aid of his Scoot Scoot, he does not let anything slow him down. Scooter and his friends help teach us that everyone is different, and it is what’s in our hearts that truly matters. Annie has been wheelchair-bound since she had a diving accident in May of 2005. Scooter’s endearing story stems from Annie’s own experiences of navigating through life in a wheelchair. She has spoken to many groups about her accident, adapting to life in a wheelchair, and overcoming obstacles. Annie’s true passion is for working with children and being an advocate for those with disabilities! She plans on being able to use Scooter’s story as another way to reach out and educate children on the importance of acceptance, and being able to see past outward appearances and differences.

IT’S A NEW DAY AT

DIRECTBUY

8450 Westfield Blvd #100 Indianapolis, IN 46240 317-472-9800 Indianapolis.DirectBuy.com

MEMBERSHIP IS NOW AFFORDABLE FOR EVERYONE What if you could shop directly from over 700 of the world’s best brand name manufacturers with a savings guarantee? What if someone made these great prices and this vast selection of products incredibly convenient? It would sound too good to be true. That and much more is what DirectBuy has offered its clients for years. However, recently they made this all available at a remarkably affordable price. For those not familiar with DirectBuy, it’s a savings club that utilizes the buying power of its members to negotiate with manufacturers great prices on top brands for your home and lifestyle. DirectBuy, originally known as United Consumers Club, started in Merrillville, Indiana, in 1971 by James Gagan. From its inception, DirectBuy provided great savings to its members. The problem for many was that until recently, a DirectBuy

membership required a significant upfront membership fee of a few thousand dollars. Unless you were undertaking a large project or had the foresight to look at purchases over a period of time the significant upfront fee was a deterrent to many consumers becoming members. The great news is that DirectBuy has transitioned from a membership program to a subscription model. You can now subscribe to the service for a nominal initial fee and a monthly subscription as low as $39.95. Needless to say, access to the great prices and unmatched selection offered by DirectBuy just became affordable to nearly everyone. Recently, we met Jack Powell and his wife Genta, the owners of DirectBuy of Indianapolis. Jack and Genta have a lifetime of experience with DirectBuy. Jack’s involvement

in DirectBuy began when he and his brother were caddying at a golf club where Gagan played. The brothers went from caddying to working for DirectBuy part-time in high school and college. Starting full time in 1978, Jack has now owned two franchise locations and was a Field Sales Director for the corporate office where he met his wife Genta, who held a position as a Field Service Director. In explaining what makes DirectBuy’s pricing policy different, Jack stated, “Most people, if you asked them, think they are a good shopper and that they get the best price. But what they are doing is comparing one retail price with another retail price. When they come into DirectBuy, they see the dealer price sheet. They see what we buy it for, and they see what any retailer buys it for. They know exactly what the true cost is on whatever they buy.”

"THE GREAT NEWS IS THAT DIRECTBUY HAS TRANSITIONED FROM A MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM TO A SUBSCRIPTION MODEL." Owners Jack and Genta Powell with daughter, Miah. INDY METRO / AUGUST 2016 / TownePost.com

When you walk in to the local DirectBuy showroom located at 8450 Westfield Blvd., you will immediately see a vast number of manufacturers’ product displays as well as bookshelves lined with hundreds of manufacturers’ catalogs. You are welcome to stop by the showroom to see the vast selection and confidential pricing available through DirectBuy. Genta and her staff will be happy to provide any help you may need to find the products you are looking for.

In addition to the showroom, DirectBuy also makes shopping incredibly convenient online. The My DirectBuy website allows you to shop how you want, where you want and whenever you want. They also offer an app that has an amazing feature called “I Want That.” If you are out and see something you want, simply take a picture of it and upload it to the app. DirectBuy’s Concierge Shopping experts will investigate your request and provide you with matching or similar products along with pricing. If you are shopping online and a question arises, you can call the Concierge Shopping experts 7 days a week to help answer any questions or plan a project. DirectBuy even offers a custom in-home designer service where someone will come to your home to help with your project.

Big box stores pick and choose the items they offer for sale from a manufacturer’s line based on what their buyers think you want and which ones will be most profitable for them to carry. At DirectBuy, they simply provide you with the manufacturers’ catalog and let you decide which products you want to buy, and that typically includes their entire line.

INDY THE ™

At DirectBuy you will find a full complement of suppliers that represent quality products from entry level to high end. Many members find they can upgrade quality through DirectBuy since they avoid the hidden retail markup. Last but not least, DirectBuy now offers a travel service, which has great savings on vacation packages all over the world. DirectBuy is a Premium Sponsor of MIBOR and is now working with realtors in the area to help new homeowners furnish, decorate and remodel their homes. DirectBuy of Indianapolis has been named multiple times as the best in the category of Kitchen and Bath Cabinetry by Indy’s A List, including 2016. Additionally the Corporate Enterprise offering enables local business owners to provide the DirectBuy subscription as a company perk. If you, like most, are looking for a place to shop with unmatched savings, selection and convenience with award winning service, stop by or call Jack and Genta at DirectBuy. This remarkable shopping experience has never been more affordable. TownePost.com / AUGUST 2016 / INDY METRO

If you are planning a larger home improvement project, the showroom is a convenient place to meet your contractor and/or designer where you can do a onestop shop and order everything you may need to complete the project, knowing that you are getting the best pricing without having to run all over town.

As mentioned earlier, DirectBuy’s selection is enormous. It includes the products of over 700 name brand manufacturers, which translates into over 1,000,000 SKUs. A partial list of the products offered includes home improvement categories like carpeting, hardwood flooring, windows, plumbing fixtures, furniture and major appliances along with lifestyle products like sunglasses, golf clubs, exercise equipment, televisions, jewelry and apparel.

In addition to providing this valuable pricing information to their clients, DirectBuy also backs this up with an actual savings guarantee. According to Jack, “One of the most significant things we have done recently is we now have a savings guarantee. When a person buys something [at DirectBuy], they are absolutely guaranteed the lowest prices in the marketplace.” You can actually see the savings guarantee spelled out in the DirectBuy catalog and on their website.

WINE, ART, MUSIC AND MICROBREWS Many Indianapolis metro residents are familiar with Taxman Brewing and Mallow Run Winery. However, the wines and microbrews of Johnson County extend well beyond those two. The county is home to more than five microbreweries including Oaken Barrel, one of the original brewers in the state. Nearly 20 brewers and wineries from around Indiana will come together to celebrate Indiana’s wine, art, music and microbrews at WAMMfest at Craig Park in Greenwood Saturday, August 20. This year, WAMMfest features 10 breweries, nine wineries, a large number of restaurants, food trucks, live music and more than 70 artist booths in a juried art

fair. The juried art fair ensures that only Indiana’s finest artist and craftspeople will fill Artists Alley featuring jewelry, painting, sculptures, baskets, clothing and more. Live music includes acoustic acts, a string quartet, jazz and a selection of retro and contemporary bands. In its first seven years, WAMMfest has become a wonderful way to spend a Saturday, attacking more than 6,000 people annually from all around the metro area. The event, organized by the Sertoma Club of Greenwood, has resulted in $450,000 being donated by Sertoma for local causes and charities. Wineries at the event include Buck Creek, Cedar Creek, Chateau Thomas, Harmony,

CARMEL'S CELEBRATION OF THE ART IN AUTOMOTIVE

In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.

Each year, this unique event features a distinct gathering of recognized artists, collector cars and automotive enthusiasts, showcased on the streets of the Carmel Arts & Design District. With more than 400 enthusiast and collector cars on the streets of Carmel, the Artomobilia boasts one of the most eclectic gatherings of original, period-correct cars, including Supercar, Exotic, Sports Car, Classics, Racers, Historically Preserved, Indiana Built and Sedan/Coupe, and will be featuring two new classes, Antique Trucks and Restomods. Each year, the Artomobilia highlights a selection of automotive anomalies that are as interesting as they are distinct. In past years, this event has featured 50 Years of Mustang, Porsche, series-winning racecars and more. Enthusiast and collector cars come in all shapes and sizes, and our car corrals feature brand-specific examples across 25 or more different corrals. While these are not formally judged, they represent the best examples of what is going on in national and local car clubs and provide a great opportunity to see firsthand how you can participate in the car hobby.

The Artomobilia continues to grow year over year, attracting over 15,000 automotive enthusiasts of all ages to stroll among collector cars, event sponsors and the Arts & Design District’s restaurants, boutiques and storefront retailers.

This year, the organizers are increasing the diversity of the show’s classes and will introduce two new classes, Antique Trucks and Restomods.

Don’t let another Beat the Fallwithout Rush summer pass & Make your Backyard your dream backyard!

Artomobilia’s Founder John Leonard spoke about what’s new this year for enthusiasts to enjoy while attending this spectacular event.

Dreams a Reality

“Artomobilia is a crazy group of cars, but everyone who participates has the same love of automobiles,” Leonard enthused. “At this show, you’ll see a guy who came with his Ferrari, and he’s down checking out the Chevy Corvair that reminds him of the one he owned when he was 26 years old. “Artomobilia is a great event with a great audience and a great market. The audience appreciates great customer service, high touch and all of the things that our audience and sponsors have come to expect. This year, we’ll have a lot of the same car classes that we’ve traditionally had, but we’ve added Antique Trucks due to the call that we’ve received from owners of these trucks who want to show them. “We’ve also added a Restomod class. Restomods are where you take a Corvette, for example, and install a modern drive train, suspension and brakes. It looks similar to the original stock but has customized features. It has the same shape as the original, but all of the underpinnings are completely different and modernized. They are drivable and enjoyable cars. We want to present cars in groups that people don’t normally see.”

ADVENTURE IN THE TREES CONNER PRAIRIE OPENS OUTPOST TREETOP Writer & Photographer / Demi Lawrence

On July 1, Conner Prairie introduced their newest and most exciting exhibit yet: Outpost Treetop. This permanent exhibit features a four-story treehouse with a suspension bridge and walkways around it, as well as activities around the premises such as music making and digging in an archeology site. Surrounding the massive structure are also several hiking trails through the forest, which allow families, specifically the children, to adventure the world around them and appreciate the beautiful nature that Indiana has to offer. The treehouse itself towers over its guests at a whopping 45 ft. tall and offers 6,000 sq. ft. of fun and exploration. Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Cathy Ferree said that one of the main purposes of the Outpost Treetop was to shape kids into lifelong learners. The activities surrounding the treehouse allow kids to learn about Indiana’s past without even realizing it, and Conner Prairie hopes that in this learning, kids will ask their parents questions and ultimately learn even more. Another purpose of this exhibit is to get kids engaged in nature and in the outdoors, something that some kids lack today. Outpost Treetop is now open to the public and ready to give your family a great day full of exploration and learning, so come over to Conner Prairie and give it a go!

RAINBOW STATION TO OPEN AT GEIST Writer / Pat Carlini

A groundbreaking ceremony took place May 20 at 10408 Olio Rd. – the site of the first Rainbow Station preschool to open in the state of Indiana. Geist area couple Steve and Debbie Ramos and longtime friends Jay and Becky Brammer have been working on bringing Rainbow Station to the Fishers community for more than eight years and are excited to see their new venture become a reality. “It’s exciting to see the construction underway,” says Steve with a smile. “It’s been a long time coming.” Debbie will be the Director of Curriculum for Rainbow Station at Geist. She has been teaching with HSE for over 20 years and is an award-winning Teacher of the Year for the HSE School District. She left her longtime post as a second grade teacher at Geist Elementary at the end of the school year to focus on the opening of Rainbow Station – a move that still brings a tear to her eye. “It’s really hard leaving what I love to do after 32 years,” says Debbie. “But, this is a great new adventure and something needed in our community.” Family friend Adam Gilliatte of Gilliatte General Contractors was also on hand for the groundbreaking with his family and says he is glad to be a part of bringing the new school to the community. “This school represents our community’s desire to continue investing in our families," says Gilliatte. “Children will receive the highest quality education from one of the best local educators, Debbie Ramos.” Rainbow Station at Geist will offer a wide selection of programs: Full-Day Nursery School (Infants), Full-Day Preschool and School Age Recreation. What sets them apart from other school is Rainbow Station offers sick childcare at their “Get Well Place,” a unique program that offers care for mildly ill children from birth to age 14 that offers much needed support for families with parents who work. Staffed full-time by a pediatric nurse, the Get Well Place provides emergency backup care for children with common childhood illnesses such as colds, chicken pox or the flu.

Rainbow Station is among the few preschools and school-aged recreation programs to achieve national accreditations based on stringent standards set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the National After School Association (NAA). Steve and Debbie will be employing up to 40 part- and fulltime employees at their new location. They hope to open more Rainbow Station schools in the future including Carmel, Westfield and Zionsville. Rainbow Station is now enrolling for infants to pre-K. You can visit Rainbow Station at Geist’s Facebook page for more information or rainbowstation.org/geist or email Geist@rainbowstationindy.org.

The MPLT has also formed 'MPLT's Road to Pasadena' campaign to raise the funds needed. Supporters can follow MPLT on Twitter and Instagram @ MPLTBand. Followers can also keep up to date via Facebook under Marching Pride of Lawrence Township. "They cleaned up Lawrence Park as part

The MPLT is a joint effort between Lawrence Central High School and Lawrence North High School. With a combined township-wide school marching band, they can compete at both the state (Indiana State Music Association) and national (Bands of America) levels. SUPERINTENDENT OF LAWRENCE SCHOOLS READY FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR Writer / Matt Keating

Dr. Shawn Smith, Superintendent of Lawrence Schools, is ready to start the new school year. This is what he had to say in a recent interview: What are you most excited about for the 2016-17 school year? I am very excited about the high caliber of both staff and students in the MSD of Lawrence Township that will be with us for the 2016-2017 school year. Our students constantly amaze us, and we have gone to great lengths to ensure that we have the best and brightest teachers ready to meet them on the first day of school. I look forward to speaking with all of them at my annual back to school meetings in each building. I would also point to our progress as we move forward with our Blue Ribbon Facilities Plan. You may have noticed a great deal of dust and dirt around some of our schools, and this centers around the facilities’ improvements taking place across the district. Currently, renovations are taking place at Mary Castle Elementary and McKenzie Center for Innovation and Technology. Stadium renovations will begin later this summer at both Lawrence Central and Lawrence North. As we move in to 2016-2017, look for work to begin at Skiles Test Elementary, Indian Creek Elementary, and Harrison Hill Elementary. What challenges are you looking forward to taking on? A great challenge we face is adjusting to new ISTEP assessment taken last spring once we receive our results. We must ensure we prepare our students for success with all standards assessed. We have to take our results and make our weaknesses strengths, taking those focus areas and applying appropriate strategies and interventions in the classroom to ensure the success of all students. We see this less as a challenge, and more of an opportunity to continue to grow and improve. We will also have our eye on the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) legislation as it moves down the pipeline.

continually seek new and innovative ways to instruct our students and to engage families. It is important that the MSD of Lawrence Township continue to tell our own story and promote our excellence. Pride in our schools is essential for success. With over 90 percent of our students graduating, the entire community benefits from successful schools and a more educated student population. Reading is such a pleasure. What kinds of great reading programs are in place for the 2016-17 school year? The core of any successful literacy initiative is to have students reading. We have an in-depth summer reading presently in place that aims to lay the foundation for the 2016-2017 school year. During the instructional year, students have opportunities to read and write daily in authentic ways. This work is supported with curricular resources from both National Geographic and Pearson. Additionally, we use supplementary programs (LexiaCore 5 & Reading Plus), allowing students to have opportunities to build proficiencies for their individual needs. (Lawrence Schools has an extensive partnership with Indianapolis Public Libraries so all students have library cards. At Crestview Elementary, 78 percent of students received their library card through the program.) What do you like to do when you have some rare free time? What activities do you enjoy? At my age, when I have some free time, I rest! I love down time to rest and relax, but I also am the father of three children. They range in age from a junior in college to an eighth grade student. It is important to me, and to them, that I support their activities and initiatives. I am also an avid sports fan, particularly football. I will go on record and share that I am a master fantasy football player and really enjoy participating in that annually. And yes, I love my Bears and Wildcats!

How have Lawrence Schools continued to improve? Lawrence Township has continued to grow during my time as Superintendent of Schools. I am proud to share that, according to the Indiana Department of Education, we are the fastest growing school district in the state of Indiana. Additionally, our graduation rate has continued to rise, moving from from 87 percent two years ago to above 90 percent. How could they get better? Organizations must also seek to better themselves. We must atGeist.com / AUGUST 2016 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 45
