ELLERY MINCH School: Mt. Vernon High School Sport: Basketball College Commitment: DePaul University

Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Ellery Minch, a senior at Mt. Vernon High School, has had several outstanding girls basketball seasons, and she is looking forward to more. Ellery was named an Indiana Junior All-Star, and also named to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Supreme 15 in both her sophomore and junior years. “A few of Ellery’s honors over the years also include being in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Top 150 camp for 2021, 2022 and 2023,” says her father, Ted Minch. “She was also a Brandon Clay/Peach State Basketball Blue Chip/Top 100 national prospect.’ Ellery was in sectional championships in 2021, 2022 and 2023, and was also part of the All-Hoosier Crossroads Conference first team for 2021, 2022 and 2023. “She was also in the IBCA All-State first team for 2022 and 2023,” Ted says. “She was the Hancock County Player of the Year for 2023, and she was academic all-state for 2022 and 2023. Freshmen are not eligible. She was also Class 4A Most Versatile Player by Prep Girls Hoops.” Ellery was also named in the Under Armour Future 60. She was invited to the Wooten’s Top 75 girls basketball nationwide all-star camps. Ellery helped lead Mt. Vernon to its third straight sectional championship during the 2022-2023 season. “Some kids spend their entire high school careers winning countless personal awards, and being named to multiple all-star and all-state teams without ever having won a sectional championship,” Ted says. “Many of Ellery’s closest friends with whom she’s played over the years on Amateur Athletic Union [AAU] teams have never won a sectional. The fact that she’s played integral roles from her freshman season in helping her team win three sectional championships in a row is an unbelievable team achievement that transcends any of her individual awards. To say we are proud of her is an understatement.”

Ellery averaged 16.4 points per game last season. “While that stat is correct, scoring points or personal achievements and stat lines have never been goals of hers,” Ted says. “Many kids only care about their individual stat sheets and scoring 1,000 or more career points. Whether on the AAU circuit or at Mt. Vernon, she has never been concerned with her individual stats. One of the primary reasons she was named to the Under Armour Future Top 60 was because she was one of the most efficient players on the Girls Under Armour Association circuit.” Ellery has been playing basketball since she was young. “Ellery started attending basketball camps and playing ‘little dribblers’ at age 4 and, though at the time she was too young to attend, Ellery and I went to a Purdue dads and daughters basketball camp hosted by the Purdue women’s basketball team when she was also 4,” Ted says. “I had to tell Ellery to be sure not to tell anyone how old she was because she had to be 6 to attend.” Ellery’s mom, Christine Sovich, is proud that Ellery was named to the Supreme 15. “Ellery is always putting team achievements ahead of personal

8 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

goals,” Sovich says. “I couldn’t be prouder of her, nor more appreciative of the coaches who have seen her play and have recognized her abilities on and off the court.” Ellery is going to DePaul University next year and will play basketball. “She had close to 40 Division I offers, with so many amazing schools and programs to choose from,” Sovich says. “From our first visit to campus, we knew DePaul would be a great fit for her and it quickly became a frontrunner. The environment there is wonderful.” Ellery also keeps busy off the basketball court. “More than a basketball player, Ellery is simply an incredible young lady,” Sovich says. “This senior school year, she has been working at Little Explorers Preschool [LEP], at 116th and Brooks School Road, as a teacher’s assistant. Lori Lorenz, owner/director of Little Explorers, where Ellery just happened to attend and was LEP’s first registered student upon opening, has told us that Ellery is beloved by students and teachers alike, and always goes above and beyond her work obligations. Ms. Lorenz’s experience with Ellery describes how well Ellery is liked and appreciated by her peers and her teachers, and best sums up the person Ellery is.”

VALUING MENTAL HEALTH AS PART OF OVERALL WELL-BEING Story & Photography Provided

What do you think of when you hear “health and wellness?” The concepts of health, our mental or physical condition, and wellness, a state of being in good health, often bring about thoughts of physical fitness or ability. However, cognitive, emotional and sensory aspects of being well can be just as impactful on our day-to-day living. Our current state of health, in all areas, affects our ability to manage our routine responsibilities, including the act of driving. Driving has many health benefits, including improving mental health by reducing stress and anxiety, allowing a sense of control and freedom over one’s environment, and establishing a sense of worth. Additionally, having to manage multi-limb coordination, multitasking, and functional memory allows for the development of neuroplasticity.

The driving evaluation consists of two parts: in-clinic and behind-the-wheel assessments. The in-clinic assessment reviews skills such as reaction time, range of motion, mobility, visual processing speed, divided attention, and memory. These abilities are correlated with driving safety. A behind-thewheel assessment demonstrates how the patient manages all of those previously assessed skills, to safely manage intersections, right and left turns, lane stability, and lane changes in varying road and weather conditions.

Certain medications may also impact safety due to common side effects causing dizziness, excessive sleepiness, blurred vision or confusion. Each medical diagnosis has its own characteristics and impacts on driving.

Following a driving evaluation, a certified driver rehabilitation specialist will make recommendations, which may include continuation of driving without modification, modification of driving times (avoiding rush hour, night driving and interstate driving, etc.), participation in training with vehicle modifications (hand controls, steering devices or left-foot accelerator), and/or potentially discussion of alternate transportation options if driving is not considered a safe option at that time. If you have further questions or are interested in participating in a driving evaluation, please contact Sherrie Waugh, MOT, OTR, CDRS, at The Brain Center, at sherrie. waugh@braincenterindy. com or 317-562-0942.

ALLEGIANT REALTY SUCCEEDS AS A FAMILY TEAM Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided

Joshua Hoeft, a real estate broker with Allegiant Realty, says he is excited to join the family business and follow his passion for real estate. “I always saw myself working in real estate in some way,” Hoeft says. “I just did not know it would be at a family brokerage. Both my parents are entrepreneurs who have created successful businesses, so I thought, ‘Why go to a corporate brokerage when I can learn from my own family and build something ourselves?’ I like to figure out problems and create. With having a family brokerage, there is a lot of room for new ideas to come to life.” Hoeft completed a commercial real estate internship in college, which peaked his interest even more. He decided to pursue his license. He graduated in 2023 from Purdue University. “I have a degree in selling and sales management, and a minor in management,” Hoeft says. “I thought real estate would be a great place to use the skills I learned from Purdue. My dad also graduated from Purdue and so did my wife, Gabby.” Hoeft notes that his family works well 12 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

together. “Gabby and I are also super close with my parents, so it naturally fits as a good team,” he says. “My parents also live on the waterfront on Geist, which is why we are trying to niche down on the Geist market.” The team at Allegiant Realty includes Hoeft’s mom, Karen, as managing broker and owner. “She started Allegiant Realty LLC in 2012, as she wanted to be an independent broker,” Hoeft says. “She has successfully done that for the past 14 years, selling many million-dollar homes that are waterfront on Geist or in the Geist area.” Hoeft’s father, David Hoeft, is an investor and realtor. “My dad has owned and sold companies, and now invests in real estate and new builds that he and his business partner rent out,” Hoeft says. “They have over 110 doors and two new builds underway right now. When he is not investing, he is helping guide our Allegiant Realty team with new ideas and ventures.” Hoeft says Gabby handles marketing and operations. “She is helping create our blog posts and social content, planning marketing events, and brainstorming ideas for us to grow,” Hoeft says. “She is even

looking at potentially getting her real estate license in 2024.” Hoeft notes that at Allegiant Realty the team loves working with people, because they truly have a passion for helping clients find the best house for them. “We think every buyer or seller should have someone behind them who understands what their needs are, and as a family team you will feel like you have joined the family and are protected as one of our own,” he says. “That is why we are your trusted family in real estate. When someone works with us, they work with all of us. They will get my new ambition to real estate and social media strategy. They will get Karen’s veteran experience in the field. David knows the real estate market and has investment knowledge, and Gabby is always willing to step in and help market a property in any way possible. These are our two slogans: ‘Where home and heart unite’ and ‘Your trusted family in real estate.’ ” To find out more about Allegiant Realty, located at 8522 Jib Court in Indianapolis, call 317-771-5494 or visit allegiantrealtyhomes.com.

A WELLNESS CHALLENGE FOR OUR COMMUNITY Writer / Scott Fussell Photography Provided

“Why am I so tired?”

“Set a goal. Stress. Achieve. Repeat. That’s what I do.”

“I can’t believe I just barked at my son like that. Why am I so edgy?” “No way I’m going to make the game. He’ll understand. “Only had my C game today. Hope Always does.” it was enough for them to sign.” “Something’s missing. We aren’t “I’ll pick up something on the way as close as we used to be.” home. They won’t miss me.” “Great job out there, but early in “The money’s great, but there’s got the game you should’ve…” to be something more.” “I just don’t get it. Why are they “I don’t understand why my so much happier than me?” daughter struggles. We’ve given her everything.” 14 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

If you’ve said, heard or felt any of these statements, you’re not alone. You just may not know it. We as a community are often hesitant to say these things out loud, or reflect on the short- and long-term impact. In communities like ours, many feel enormous pressure for friends, neighbors, fellow church members and coworkers to think we’ve got everything completely together. Smart, vibrant and entrepreneurial are three of the adjectives marketers use to describe our community. We’d love to add introspective, brave, authentic and connected to that list. At The Shift Initiative, we’re built to shift the way people think, talk, act and care about mental health and wellness. What’s that look like for our community? What can you do right now? Here are 10 things you can do immediately to make the shift.

1. EMBRACE REALITY. Times, people and needs change. We can’t rely on what we’ve always done. Talk to your kids, loved ones and friends. Ask questions, listen actively, take a parenting or communications class, shift your approach and watch your relationships grow.

2. MAINTAIN A TEAM ATTITUDE. Our schools, local practices and area nonprofits all offer incredible resources. You’re not in this alone. Be brave enough to lean on their expertise.

3. THINK LIKE A MULTISPORT ATHLETE. Wellness requires a multifaceted approach. Nourish your mind, body, spiritual and relational health.

We’ll never truly be “Stigma-Free Fishers” until I’m able to tell you about my son or daughter’s anxiety and depression as easily as you tell me about your kiddo tearing his ACL at soccer last week. Over the past few years we’ve shared our story a lot. One thing we’ve learned and taken great comfort in is realizing we’re not alone…far from it. Of the playlist above,

our primary challenge to you is to tell your story openly, honestly and unfiltered. You’ll be amazed by the stories, connection and support you receive in return. For more information, details on speaking engagements, or programming opportunities, contact Scott Fussell at scott@shiftinitiative. org, or follow The Shift Initiative on Facebook, Instagram, X, and Threads.

Interior Décor Consult

Everyone needs beauty around them.

4. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Ten minutes of yoga. Two minutes of breathing. Hydration. Rest. For some, it can be that simple. As Glennon Doyle says, “When feelings are big, think small.”

5. GET OUTSIDE. Need to get grounded? Spend time outside. Visit a park. Take a hike. Literally lay on the ground. Seriously.

6. GET OUTSIDE… OF YOURSELF. Fifty percent of Americans suffer from isolation and loneliness. What can you do to prevent it? Connect. Share. Serve. Listen.

7. EXTEND GRACE. Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Choose kindness always.

8. EXTEND THAT SAME GRACE TO YOURSELF. Would you let someone talk to a loved one the way you sometimes talk to yourself? Absolutely not. Turn off the negative talk track that’s on a loop between your ears.

Fall in love with your house! It may make you happier. Special pricing on Interior diagnostics for first ten clients in February. Be curious! Be first!

9. SHIFT YOUR PERSPECTIVE. We have choices. Choose to see and say the greatness all around you.

Victoria Gofman-Wallingford, Designer

10. TELL YOUR STORY. Being honest with ourselves and being willing to share our stories is essential.

Stories of

SOBER LIVING Writer / Alison Gatz Photography Provided

SOBRIETY IS NO LONGER HELD ONLY BY THOSE FIGHTING ADDICTION. TODAY, PEOPLE ARE CHOOSING A SOBER LIFESTYLE FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS AND SHARE THEIR STORIES OF SOBER LIVING.

TODD AND JAMIE

Todd and Jamie started the recovery process about five years ago after realizing the path they were headed down was not one they wanted to continue. Mocktails became the new normal and their new path is a much healthier one.

16 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

BRIAN

After jail and sleeping on the floor of a homeless shelter, Brian decided he didn’t want that life anymore. Recovery has given him repaired relationships, new healthy relationships, and a life that makes him a better man than ever before.

ANGEY

This fitness coach and mentor had no hope five years ago of ever seeing more than two days without alcohol. After failed attempts to manage her drinking through moderation and restriction, she knew her body was just genetically different.

GENOVA

JORDAN

MAX

JOYLYNN

All she wanted was to find the trick to moderation. Rachel lived a lifestyle full of healthy behaviors but drinking was the one thing that she couldn’t figure out. She finally had enough, threw everything but the kitchen sink at getting sober, and her sober journey began.

Jordan firmly believes in the phrase “a smart man learns from his mistakes and a wise man learns from the mistakes of others.” Sober-curious became sober living, and today he lives as an example of toxic-free living to others.

After 15 years of being the partier, the fun guy and the life of the party, Jonathan realized he was an alcoholic. Continual relapses, trips to the hospital and almost losing his marriage were catalysts to get sober. Accountability and faith help him stay sober.

After watching his uncle lose his life due to alcohol, Max knew that alcohol needed to be eliminated from his life. Finding sober people and socializing in alcohol-free places has made a huge difference in his sobriety.

Genova started drinking at an early age and every occasion involved drinking alcohol. Today she’s sober by taking things one day at a time and relying on her higher power.

After years of going back and forth between alcohol/ substance use and abstinence, Joylynn felt like a failure since she couldn’t stop. Her sobriety journey began by addressing underlying trauma and today she coaches others in their recovery.

KRISTIN

Todd knew extended family members had challenges with addiction so at a very young age he chose not to drink. Choosing not to start meant he wouldn’t have to choose to stop down the road.

As a business owner and mom of six that just celebrated 23 years clean and sober, Annie never thought this is where her life would be when she was arrested at 18 for possession of a controlled substance.

18 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

Pam has always been sobercurious since alcohol use has been a generational pattern in her family. She started educating herself and today she’s leaving sobriety as her legacy for the next generation.

He lived by the motto “work hard, play hard” and as a binge drinker who could go periods of time without drinking, Mario didn’t see himself as an alcoholic. Hitting rock bottom taught him he is an alcoholic.

At only 25 years old, Bailey realized that one drink was never enough and moderation was not possible. She recognized those patterns from watching family members struggle with alcoholism and decided not to wait for her rock bottom.

Kristin had many stop/ starts and broken rules before finally becoming alcohol free. Getting sober was a process and Kristin encourages others to be gentle with themselves.

A Beginner’s Guide to Health and Wellness Story & Photography Provided

22 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

Embarking on a journey toward improved health and wellness can be both exciting and rewarding. For beginners, understanding the fundamentals of nutrition and exercise is key to establishing a foundation for a healthier lifestyle. This comprehensive guide aims to provide valuable insights and practical tips to kickstart your journey toward a balanced and fulfilling approach to well-being. Before beginning these lifestyle changes, please consult your local health care professional.

NUTRITION BASICS FOR BEGINNERS 1. BALANCED DIET A balanced diet is the cornerstone of good health. Aim to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats in your meals. This diversity ensures that your body receives the essential nutrients it needs to function optimally.

2. HYDRATION Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Consider replacing sugary drinks with water, herbal teas or infused water for added flavor without the extra calories.

3. PORTION CONTROL Pay attention to portion sizes to avoid overeating. Use smaller plates, listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, and savor each bite. Eating mindfully can help prevent mindless overconsumption.

4. LIMIT PROCESSED FOODS Minimize your intake of processed and sugary foods. These items are often high in unhealthy fat, sugar and salt, contributing to weight gain and negatively impacting overall health.

5. MEAL PLANNING Plan your meals in advance to ensure you have nutritious options readily available. Preparing meals at home allows you to control ingredients and make healthier choices.

EXERCISE ESSENTIALS FOR BEGINNERS

INTEGRATING NUTRITION AND EXERCISE

1. START SLOW

1. TIMING MATTERS

If you’re new to exercise, begin with lowintensity activities. Walking, swimming or cycling are excellent choices for beginners. Gradually increase the intensity and duration as your fitness level improves.

Consider the timing of your meals in relation to your workouts. Eating a balanced meal or snack before exercising can provide the necessary energy, while post-exercise nutrition aids in recovery.

2. SET REALISTIC GOALS

2. SEEK PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE

Establish achievable and realistic fitness goals. Whether it’s walking for 30 minutes a day or completing a short workout routine, setting attainable goals will keep you motivated.

3. MIX IT UP

If possible, consult with a nutritionist or fitness professional, especially when starting a new regimen. They can provide personalized advice based on your individual needs and goals.

Variety is key to maintaining interest and preventing boredom. Incorporate a mix of cardiovascular exercises (e.g., walking, jogging) and strength training (e.g., bodyweight exercises, light weights) to target different muscle groups and improve overall fitness.

3. CELEBRATE PROGRESS

4. PRIORITIZE CONSISTENCY OVER INTENSITY

4. BUILD A SUPPORT SYSTEM

Consistency is crucial in building a sustainable exercise routine. Aim for regular, moderate-intensity workouts rather than sporadic high-intensity sessions. Consistency leads to lasting results.

Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Whether it’s completing a workout or choosing a nutritious meal, recognizing progress fosters a positive mindset and motivates continued efforts.

Surround yourself with a supportive community. Share your goals with friends and family, or join fitness classes or groups. Having a support system can provide encouragement and accountability.

5. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Pay attention to how your body responds to exercise. If you experience pain (not to be confused with the normal discomfort of a challenging workout), give yourself time to recover and consider adjusting your routine.

Health and wellness for beginners involves understanding the fundamentals of nutrition and exercise. By incorporating balanced nutrition, gradual and consistent exercise, and mindful lifestyle choices, individuals can pave the way for a healthier and more fulfilling life. Remember, small changes add up over time, and the key is to find a sustainable and enjoyable approach that aligns with your personal preferences and goals. TownePost.com | February 2024 | 23

Splashing Success INDY BOAT COMPANY IS RIDING A WAVE OF GROWTH AND CUSTOMER POPULARITY Writer / Renee Larr Photography Provided

s winter rears its ugly head, many people dream of a warm, sunny day on a lake. Indy Boat Company is a full-service boat dealership that provides customers with their dream boats, storage, general maintenance, repair, and any accessory needed to enjoy a day on the water. Having grown up on Geist Reservoir, Owner Mike Liotti has been passionate about boats since a young age. His love for the water grew as he did. Liotti’s boat-owning friends approached him when they needed help repairing their watercraft. Liotti pursued that passion for boats and the water as a career. In 2021 he founded the business as it is now known Indy Boat Company. “People always called me when they couldn’t get help to work on their boats,” Liotti says. “They’d call me and say, ‘Can you take a look at it?’ I grew up around boats and love them. I saw a need for service. We have this relatively short summer, so when a boat is down, losing a month out of the summer is tough.”

Liotti says his team’s passion for boating and providing topnotch customer service are evident daily. Indy Boat Company sells four premium brands including MasterCraft, Supra, and Moomba tow boats, as well as Sylvan pontoon boats. They also offer a variety of used boats. Used inventory is constantly rotating based on trade-ins. Their large showroom holds over 15 display boats, and their in-house pro shop sells boards, vests, ropes and apparel for the everyday and experienced boating enthusiast. Liotti says Indy Boat Company sells a majority of its boats here in central Indiana, but also in the northern part of the state, specifically Lake Wawasee and Kosciusko County. Indy Boat Company is participating in the 2024 Indianapolis Boat, Sport and Travel Show at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in February. The team will have a large booth centrally located in the main boat area, display all its brands, and offer rebates and incentives during that time. “Since our start in 2021, we have continued to grow,” Liotti says. “Our staff has tripled and we continue looking for

people. We always reinvest our efforts to improve the customer experience through team development and technology improvements. We recently built five new storage buildings about 15 minutes from our dealership. These are brand new, with concrete floors and 24/7 surveillance. We also have a test pond located there to test our customers’ boats on-site. We may potentially be building our brand-new dealership at this same location, and continue to look towards the future.” Liotti says the Indy Boat Company team prides itself on excellent customer service and events the company hosts yearly. “We’re boaters too and have a huge passion for lake life,” he says. “We do a ton of demo days on the surrounding lakes and are looking to expand to others around Indiana.

Superior risk-adjusted returns with an emphasis on

Last year we hosted an event at Wolfies on Geist and had great success. We provided demos for potential customers and enjoyed food and drinks in their upstairs lounge area. We will look to replicate that this year on Geist as well. We also host a yearly customer appreciation event in the fall with live music, giveaways, food and drinks. We are grateful that it has continued to grow, and love showing our appreciation to our customers. We invite anyone wanting to attend any of our on-water events or any events at our showroom to reach out for more info.”
