Moon Drops Distillery is the outcome of a natural progression, on the part of its owners, from casual interest to professional pursuit.

“Me and Mark Pressley, the president and co-owner of the business, have been studying the theory of making distilled spirits for probably a decade or so now,” says Co-owner and Head Distiller Mark Taylor, a career firefighter who served for more than five years in Fishers before transferring to Carmel. “We never did it for sale or anything before now, and it was more of a thing that we studied.”

Taylor about giving the spirits game a try.

They began looking for an ideal location in 2019, eventually landing on a property in Fortville to build out a craft distillery specializing in a line of moonshines and other types of spirits.

“Everything we’re planning to put out will be top shelf, and there won’t be any low-end products,” says Pressley, who grew up on the east side of Indianapolis, and met Taylor while the two were neighbors living near 116th Street and Geist Road.

“I went in January of 2020 to a class in Louisville at Moonshine University, which is basically an overview of the process of starting a distillery,” Taylor says. “That February we found the Fortville lot and figured it was perfect for what we want to do. Fortville’s been expanding more and more over the last few years, and as we’ve noticed that, it’s what brought us to that area for the business. It just seemed to fit as an area where we can do what we want to accomplish vision-wise, and grow as a company.”

Moon Drops Distillery will turn out more than just a line of moonshine spirits.

The owners originally planned to have the building ready and begin manufacturing products by December of 2020, but delays related to COVID-19 pushed back construction, which wrapped up this summer.

“We’re going to offer bourbon, and premium vodka that goes through a unique charcoal filtration process,” Taylor says. “It will be an ultra pure and ultra premium vodka that isn’t going to break the bank.

We’ll also be doing a rum in-house, as well as an aged rum that’s at least five years old and is delicious.”

Pressley adds that he and Taylor are working on a Lemon Shakeup moonshine, which he describes as reminiscent of classic lemon beverages sold at state fairs, only with a bit more bite.

Pressley says he and Taylor also plan to bring on a bartending staff that will demonstrate for patrons how each drink is made, in detail.

“That ties into how this started, with me and Mark sitting around a bonfire working on some things and having neat cocktails, enjoying a shared experience.”

“Our tagline is, ‘The magic of shared experiences,’ and that’s what we want to do when we get around to being allowed to open a tasting room here,” Pressley says.

Taylor says from the time he and Pressley announced they’d be building a presence in Fortville, and throughout the construction process, they have been fully embraced by the local community and its leaders.

“We’ve gotten a great following on social media, and we now have a podcast that we do called ‘Distilled Down With Mark & Mark’ that people listen to from all over,” Taylor says. “The local community in Fortville has been awesome and can’t wait for us to open up the tasting room.

We’ve had to delay that because of some regulations, and people have remained excited and supportive. The fellow business owners in Fortville have been absolutely amazing, reaching out to see what they can do to help.”

“BLAZING THE TRAIL” NEW FPD MURAL DEPICTS COMMUNITY LIFE IN FISHERS

A new mural graces the Fishers Police Department (FPD) building. The 1,000-square-foot piece of artwork depicts students from Fishers High School and Hamilton Southeastern High School, the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, the Bell Ford Bridge, and Harlej, the K-9 officer killed in 2019.

Professional artist Becky Hochhalter of Terre Haute designed and painted the mural, titled “Blazing the Trail.” Hochhalter is a self-taught artist who has been creating different types of art since childhood.

“The mural itself is about the current and future use of the area around the Nickel Plate Trail,” Hochhalter says. “I also wanted to show a night-and-day representation of the use of the area. There is an evening concert at the amphitheater, a couple enjoying a beer at an outdoor table, the two high school logos, the covered bridge, and a young girl interacting with Harlej.”

The design process took several months.

“We started the design phase in January,” Hochhalter says. “I went through a few revisions, adding in different elements in a flowing design and a pleasing way. The 14 / SEPTEMBER 2021

Fishers Arts and Culture Commission and I went back and forth a few times, and we had input from the police department.”

Hochhalter was thrilled to be chosen as the artist to represent the City of Fishers.

“I know there was some stiff competition,” Hochhalter says. “It was thrilling to represent the interaction between the police department and the community.”

Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart is happy to be a part of the new artwork.

“Our community is reflected in the ‘Blazing

the Trail’ mural,” Gebhart says. “From our schools to community members, iconic landmarks and public safety, this mural captures the essence of our city and what the future holds for our community. The Fishers Police Department is excited to be a part of the new developments along the Nickel Plate Trail. We are proud of the ‘Blazing the Trail’ mural, and all that it represents for our agency and our community.”

The mural was completed in five weeks.

“I live in Terre Haute, but I have a daughter who lives in Brownsburg,” Hochhalter says. “I stayed with her and drove from Brownsburg each day.

Unfortunately, the weather delayed painting a little bit.”

“I invited Officer [ Jarred] Koopman, Harlej’s handler, to come paint Harlej’s portrait with me,” Hochhalter says. “One day he came out with his wife and children, and they painted for about two hours. It was really sweet.”

Hochhalter feels grateful to work closely with the FPD, the Fishers Arts and Culture Commission, and Ross Hilleary, assistant director of planning and zoning.

“It was such a smooth process,” Hochhalter says. “I’m especially grateful to Ross because he was there to help me work out any kinks in the beginning. He also helped me get access to the FPD building where I was storing my supplies. Everyone throughout the whole process was great.”

Bach to Rock is an education-based music school that offers private lessons for a multitude of instruments, group classes, birthday parties, and camps throughout the year. Open since February, it is staffed by professional musicians, and provides options for young children through adults at all levels. Co-owners Kellie Miles-Fink, and Jen and Andy Flickner, are excited to bring the facility’s tradition-based curriculum, applied to modern music, to the Fishers community.

Miles-Fink is a former elementary school teacher with a master’s degree from Marian University, was involved in university choirs, and minored in music at Indiana University.

She became involved with the franchise in October of 2018 as an early childhood instructor at Bach to Rock Carmel. A few months later she became artistic director.

When the Flickners, who own the Carmel school, wanted to open up a second site, she joined them as co-owner and director of the Fishers location.

“We immediately thought of Fishers 18 / SEPTEMBER 2021

when we were considering where to open a second school,” Miles-Fink says. “It’s a fabulous metro area close to Noblesville, McCordsville and the Geist area. We wanted to reach out to those families that are too far away from the Carmel school. Plus, Fishers encourages the arts and there isn’t anything quite like Bach to Rock around.”

While private lessons are the largest part of Bach to Rock, group lessons are an important facet as well. Students as young as 3 years old can participate in Rock City, a class that allows them to explore a variety

of instruments and is based on basic music theory concepts. Kids n Keys is for 5- to 7-year-old children. In this class, the focus is on learning to read music while doing group activities and enjoying individual piano stations. The result is ocular and fine-motor growth. Other classes include Rock n Roll for toddlers, Rock Band, Glee Club, DJ lessons, and group instrument lessons that help students learn to play together.

Price points vary. Group lessons for younger students are around $15 to $25 per session.

Private lessons run $35 for 30 minutes and, as individuals get more advanced, $65 per

hour. Regardless of the type of class, a set curriculum based on theory and music reading is followed. Traditional teaching is the foundation, but it is applied to music of all genres to make sure students are engaged.

“We have our own state-of-the-art recording studio,” Miles-Fink says. “As students rise up in levels, they receive the opportunity to record a song. Likewise, classes or camps, and parties such as Rock Band or DJ, record a mini mix. We also offer the chance to perform out in the community for those who take private lessons. I really love it. I wanted to work with kids but felt

that teaching in a school wasn’t a fit. I came across Bach to Rock online, and I feel I lucked into meeting the Flickners. When I began working at the Carmel school, I immediately thought this was what I was meant to do.”

Building renewal is just a small facet of the transformation taking place within the Village of Merici model. Different than a traditional group home setting, it was opened in 2014 after several years of gathering input from families and researching similar sites across the United States and internationally. employment or volunteer outside of the apartment building. Some need 24-hour care for most life skills. All are supported in finding opportunities for as much or little involvement they desire.

“I like everybody and I like that I get to do my own thing like shooting pool and music therapy,” says resident Steve Mailloux. “I volunteer at the VA and go to Sertoma Bingo and Lunch each month.”

“For Angie, her life changed because she got 20 friends,” says Beth Becher, mother of resident Angie Cain. “It transformed our lives because she was so much happier. She saw her sisters grow up and move out of the family house, and she wanted to do that too.

She wanted friends she could choose and she was able to develop those relationships.”

“There was nothing for Steve after he graduated from high school,” says Mailloux’s sister Lisa Fohl. “He and his friends didn’t drive and they lost contact with each other.

Loneliness can be the biggest disability of all. The friendships he has formed and his activities make his life rich. This community is not a place, it is an experience.”

Cain flourishes under the support of Village of Merici. Every week she works one day at Kohl’s Department Store, three days at YMCA and one day at Down Syndrome Indiana. One of her favorite activities is gardening club. She raises tomatoes, kale, lettuce, herbs and flowers which she shares with others and uses in her kitchen when she cooks her meals. She is a member of the cooking club and with the help of a coach, she meal plans and makes a grocery list.

The inside of Cain’s and Mailloux’s apartments reflect their own individual interests and tastes. Cain’s looks like any other typical millennial-style dwelling. The décor looks Pinterest-influenced and her own colorful artwork hangs on the walls.

Mailloux’s apartment is filled with gifts from family and friends such as a replica of a tandem bike, a retro lunch box, sports logos and huge oversize posters of television shows he loved growing up such as Knight Rider.

Parks Place Pub was born out of necessity.

Owners Matt Schlueter, Remington Ramsey and Matt Whitlow saw the need for a late-night sports bar and restaurant in downtown Fishers.

“We all work in the same location in Fishers,” Schlueter says. “Downtown is so vibrant and awesome, but we don’t have a lot of places to eat or grab a cold beer after work. When Brixx went out, we thought it would be funny if we opened a restaurant 22 / SEPTEMBER 2021

there. We kept saying if nobody else is going to do it, then we might as well. We started taking it a little more seriously, and we inquired about the space. After a few months we had a negotiated lease.”

None of the three owners have restaurant experience, and they work full-time jobs in finance and real estate.

“None of us have any restaurant experience, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing,” Schlueter says. “We all have a lot of creative ideas, and we’re not jaded by the industry.

Those creative ideas were helpful when developing the menu of cocktails and food. Menu items include traditional sports-bar fare like burgers and wings, as well as new, unique items like a fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

“We have some items that will be talking points for Parks Place Pub,” Schlueter says. “We have something called a horseshoe on the menu. It’s a central Illinois thing. It’s an open-faced sandwich served on toast with fries and cheese on it. We took that idea and then put an Indiana spin on it. Our horseshoe has a tenderloin on it instead of a hamburger.”

The group of friends developed the menu based on items that all three owners like to eat while out watching a game.

Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Carson Wentz has heard the rumors and can confirm - he and Prince Harry are two different people despite their similar looks.

“We’re not the same person,” Wentz says with a laugh. “I hate to break it to some people, but nope.”

Traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Indianapolis Colts in March of 2021, Wentz follows in the footsteps of the now-retired Phillip Rivers, who took the Colts to the playoffs in his lone year with the team. Drafted at number two by Philadelphia in the 2016 NFL Draft, Wentz won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2017, where he first played under current Colts Head Coach Frank Reich, who served as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator.

Although born in Raleigh, North Carolina, Wentz spent most of his upbringing in North Dakota - a state he still has many ties to today.

“Both of my parents are there, and I have a bunch of friends and stuff back there,” Wentz says. “I grew up

there, went to high school there and went to college there. North Dakota is definitely home. I love that place and love those people back there.”

While Indianapolis may be completely new terrain for him and his family, Wentz at least has a familiar face here in town with Reich.

“I loved playing for him as my coach and loved working together with him as my offensive coordinator,” Wentz says. “We just really got along well off the field and really connected on a deeper level spiritually. I just thought we had a really good thing in Philly working together, so I think we were both mutually excited to get back and work together again.”

While Carson, his wife Madison, and their 1-year-old daughter Hadley have been busy settling in, the Indianapolis community has made sure to welcome them with open arms.

“The way we’ve been welcomed and embraced has just been really cool, both football-wise from the organization but also in the community,” Wentz says. “It just seems like such a family-friendly environment. Everyone’s rooting for you, pulling for you and wants you to succeed.”

The first of these is called Thy Kingdom Crumb.

“That goes around and gives out free food to anybody and everybody, and also talks with people on the streets, shares the gospel and prays with people,” Wentz says of Thy Kingdom Crumb. “Anybody and everybody is welcome. We look forward to that continuing in Philly, but potentially seeing

When he’s not out on the gridiron, Wentz also stays busy with a nonprofit he started called the Audience of One (AO1) Foundation. A devout Christian, Wentz has tried to use his platform for good since entering the NFL. “When I was a rookie, I knew that my purpose was so much bigger than throwing touchdowns on Sunday,” he says. “Coming to my faith when I was in college, I knew there was a platform that was different. Lord knows how long I’ll have that platform, so as a rookie I said, ‘Let’s start the foundation. I don’t know how many years I’ll be in this position to have a voice, have eyes on me and make a difference, so while we’ve got it, let’s make the most of it.’ ” The AO1 Foundation consists of three separate ministries according to Wentz.

The AO1 Foundation also facilitates an Outdoor Ministry, which aims to serve children with life-threatening illnesses or other life-altering medical situations in order to foster a passion for outdoor activities and bring people closer to God through discipleship. Last but not least, the AO1 Foundation is involved in a sports complex in the country of Haiti.

“It’s just been really cool to see God working through it and for us to be obedient to where he calls us to go,” says Wentz of the AO1 Foundation and its three ministries.

“It’s been fun to really see lives being impacted and changed, not only on this earth but also for eternity, and that’s really where the greatest reward has been.”

Currently living on Indy’s northside, Wentz says he and his family have already grown to love Indianapolis.

“We love it out here,” he says. “It’s got that small-town feel, but it’s definitely a bigger city that has everything you need from restaurants to family activities.

There are so many things to do. I think the culture around here and the community atmosphere really fits me and my family perfectly, and we’re excited about it.”

As for his inner outdoorsman, Wentz says he looks forward to exploring all of the nature Indiana has to offer as well.

“The hunting, fishing and everything around in the countryside out here seems really exciting for me to dabble with, get out there and enjoy,” Wentz says.

Brothers Karl and Fritz Fentz found inspiration for their new pizzeria in an unlikely place - a garage. To be more exact, the place was called Denver’s Auto Repair.

“My brother would go over and visit with the owner of Denver’s Auto Repair, Denver Lee,” Karl Fentz says. “Over time they struck up a friendship. Denver is a very quiet man.

He just stands there and listens. Fritz would always tell him if he ever wanted to sell the place, ‘Let me know. I want you to sell it to me. I want to put a pizzeria in here and name it after you.’ ” The day Lee wanted to retire finally came, and Fritz purchased the 1950s gas station.

“For a while he used it as his man cave,” Fentz says. “People would stop by all the time and ask, ‘What is this place?’”

Finally, the time came to open Denver’s Garage Pizza and Brews in July.

“It was important to us to have a conveyor stone oven for our pizzas,” Fentz says. “We traveled to Cincinnati to check one out. The guy we talked to had nothing but positive things to say about the oven. He’d been in the pizza industry 20 years and had burns on his arms from other ovens. Once he got this oven, he never burned himself or a pizza.”

The Hot Rocks Pizza Oven can cook a pizza in five and a half minutes. Menu items include wings, breadsticks, potato skins, specialty pizzas, beer and wine.

“Everything is made in the oven,” Fentz says. “I’m not a fan of fryers. They’re messy with the grease and the smell. We designed the menu around things we could do in the oven. As we go along and get things figured out, we’ll add more items to the menu.”

The gas station was designed in 1956 when there weren’t many local gas stations. The building needed renovations to be suitable for a restaurant.

An essential factor for the brothers was to offer quality products, even if it means their costs are higher.

building,” Fentz says. “We have Kentucky bluestone that we added. It’s a tile-like slate out of Kentucky. We also had to put in a new HVAC system, a new ceiling, new bathrooms, new overhead doors, an emergency exit and double doors at the main entrance.”

The overhead doors will open to the patio when the weather is nice.

The location on Broadway Street in Fortville is a prime spot due to the traffic that passes by.

“It’s all about location, location, location,” Fentz says. “It’s the perfect spot for a restaurant. Back in its gas station days, it was the only one in the area. With State Road 67 being right there, about 13,000 cars go by a day. It’s just amazing.”

Another perk of the location is accessible “On our patio we can seat about 100 people, parking. and about 60 people inside,” Fentz says.

“Those had to go. We couldn’t change the exterior design. It was too beautiful. A bunch of gas companies wanted this gas station because it was so unique. It was important for us to keep that overhang on the building.”

“Since I was in the distribution field, I know there is a reason why things are more expensive than other things and that’s because of quality,” Fentz says. “That’s what we’re shooting for - using the best that we can get. It does make a difference.”

Before opening, the pair created a Facebook page to drum up interest in the business.

“That first day, our little Facebook page had 8,000 views,” Fentz says. “We had hundreds of followers before we even opened. It’s amazing the amount of people that just stop in to see the place, too. People are excited.

We want this to be a place people come to hang out. We want this to be more than just another pizza place.”

The community has rallied around the new pizzeria.

Owner Keith Reilly is pleased that many customers continue making return trips with their families and friends to enjoy their menu favorites.

“Our more popular menu items have included Fried Green Tomatoes, Buffalo Mac and Cheese, Ultimate Bacon Cheeseburger and America’s Smash Burger,” Reilly says.

Reilly has his own personal favorite burger. “It’s a new one on our menu, “No Name Burger,” he says. “It is made with our signature blended patty - short rib, chuck and brisket topped with goat cheese, caramelized onions, bacon, balsamic glaze and our house-made truffle mayo.”

Reilly continues to say customers are also excited about many of their past favorites. “The Hoosier Daddy tenderloin has always been a great one for us.”

“A new part of the food menu, the Hot Dogs, have been an awesome addition. These are hot dogs served with all kinds of toppings, from everything from our take on a Chicago-style hot dog to a chili cheese dog.”

“Our new drink menu is also very popular,” Reilly adds. “We have a few that really stand out such as our spiked lemonade and Prodigy Old Fashioned. We also carry a solid selection of local and craft beers.”
