The annual Geist Blast On the Bridge Fourth of July celebration promises a spectacular view of fireworks over Geist Reservoir during this family-friendly event. The blast is back on Thursday, July 4 from 5 to 10 p.m. on the Fall Creek Road Bridge. The fireworks show is set for 10 pm.

This year’s event will feature kids activities, inflatables, face painting, chalk art, roving entertainment, a DJ and food vendors. Outside food and beverage is allowed, but keep in mind that all bags are subject to a search. Alcohol, however, is not permitted at the event and will not be sold on site.

ave you been looking for a new setting to relax and get away from daily distractions?

Interested in trying a new approach to help with health issues like inflammation or respiratory issues? Maybe it’s time you tried salt.

“It’s like a holistic spa — it helps with things like allergy symptoms, respiratory infections, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and sinusitis,” she says. “We’re getting great feedback so far. There are a few salt rooms in Central Indiana, but we’re the only salt cave business that recreates what it’s like in a real, actual salt cave with ionized water cascades trickling in the back.”

Indianapolis Salt Cave and Halotherapy Center, Central Indiana’s first salt cave facility, opened in March, and Co-owner Stefanie Patterson says the benefits of even one session inside her unique facility are manifold.

The cave was constructed earlier this year with nine tons of Polish salt. Customers simply enter the room and relax in a zero-gravity chair letting the salt do the work, while a machine called a halogenerator grinds up and aerosolizes pharmaceutical-grade salt.

“We keep it cool just like a cave would be,” Patterson says. “You’re relaxing in there and breathing in the salt particles which are drying up and breaking up any gunk or mucus in your lungs and airways.

So it’s doing a lot of great things for your respiratory system.”

She adds that salt naturally helps with serotonin production, helping customers to unwind and relax. And since salt helps skin retain moisture, sessions in the cave can also kill bacteria that can cause skin issues like eczema and psoriasis.

The facility also includes two infrared saunas as well as a hand and foot detox room, in which patrons put their hands and feet on heated salt blocks that pull out toxins and heavy metals through sweat.

“We highly recommend the hand and foot detox for anyone experiencing joint pain, arthritis and inflammation,” Patterson adds.

“It’s also very relaxing and meditative like the salt cave.”

All ages are welcome in the salt cave, and Patterson offers children’s sessions where kids get buckets and shovels to play in the salt.

So why open a salt cave in Central Indiana?

Patterson says she took inspiration from a few family members in Vermont who have their own cave facility and learned about the benefits years ago.

“I really fell in love with the facility up there and what it brings to the people in that community, she says. “I saw that people really felt benefits from the treatments.

We decided it was something Indianapolis needed and doesn’t have.”

In January, Patterson purchased what she describes as the perfect building for her concept on Kent Avenue and opened her business up to Indy less than two months later.

“The building was used down through the years as a firehouse and a hospital, so there’s a lot of healing elements of the building that we wanted to revive,” she says. “We thought it was the perfect space for what we wanted to do.”

All the salt that customers are surrounded by is imported from Poland, and Patterson even hired a Polish builder to construct her custom salt cave.

“We wanted to recreate the environment of the Polish salt mines because that’s where salt therapy began,” she says. “The builder grew up going to the Polish salt mines, and he did the salt cave in Vermont for our family so we had that connection with him. He knows how the salt mines are run in Poland and we wanted to make it as authentic and as realistic as possible.”

Patterson says most of her business thus far has been through word of mouth, which she sees as a testament to the health benefits the

salt cave is providing for locals.

“People are seeing the benefits and coming back to bring their friends,” she says.

“We have people saying they used to take Mucinex and haven’t had to take it since they started coming to the salt cave. That’s why we’re here — so people have more options to take charge of their health or to just relax.”

Over a decade ago, Chelsea Couture was vacationing in Mexico with her mom (Crystal) and sister (Claire) when inspiration struck.

“We saw people making crazy balloon hats and we thought it would be fun to start a family balloon art business together,” Chelsea says, noting that all three of them nurture a creative spirit.

They came home and learned the tricks of the trade, then formed Balloongenuity in 2009.

Though it was a successful business endeavor, they often fielded questions from revelers who were in search of, say, a magician or a clown.

Then they began to notice a trend as more and more people were interested in inviting a reallive princess to their party or event.

“A woman called and said she’d like to have Rapunzel at her daughter’s party—not just

to sit and look pretty but to sing, draw, and interact with the kids,” Chelsea says. “She wanted a fairytale come to life.”

Chelsea and her family vowed to do just that. It wasn’t a stretch given that the entire family has a theatre/singing/songwriting/ artistry background.

“If we were going to do this, we wanted to do it right,” Chelsea says, who launched Happily Ever After Productions in 2012, starting with just four princesses.

“Children were in absolute awe to get to meet their favorite princesses,” Chelsea says.

There’s the classic princesses such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, and Alice in Wonderland. But the Little Mermaid, the Frog Princess Tiana, and the Snow Princesses (Anna and Elsa) are also very popular. Soon after launching, parents began asking Chelsea, “What do you offer for boys?” So, they invited select 12 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2019 / atGeist.com

superheroes to join in the fun, and now Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and Captain America (among others) visit parties.

The craze has definitely exploded.

“Initially, we thought the princesses would be a side thing to our balloon artistry and really it’s the other way around,” Chelsea says.

The highly popular Princess Package is a 1.5-hour party that includes entertainment by one character, who is accompanied by the client’s choice of balloon artist, face painter or glitter tattoo artist. The princess presents the birthday girl with a tiara and then provides a musical storytelling show, participates in the cake cutting ceremony, and delivers a special song. If parents also want to incorporate a pinata or something else into the party, they are more than welcome to do so. But for the most part, the princesses are the entertainment.

Unlike at a Disney theme park where kids’ time with characters is limited to a stand-in-line chance to snap a photo and grab an autograph, at these parties, the guests have a chance to chat at length with princesses.

“Kids want to know every backstory so they’ll ask about the princess’ parents and their pets, how they got here, everything!” Chelsea says.

Happily Ever After will accommodate parties and events within a one-hour driving radius of the Geist area. Though they have traveled as far away as Cincinnati, Louisville, and Chicago, they stay plenty busy just in the Indy area. For instance, in May Aladdin and Jasmine attended Chick-fil-A night. And earlier this spring Moana, Snow White and friends went to an Indianapolis Indians game where they mingled with fans of all ages. Each year the princesses also go to the Whitestown Parks & Rec’s Christmas Ball in Whitestown where princesses engage in a meet-n-greet with attendees.

“We see a bump in business in the spring and fall with seasonal festivals and another bump at the Fourth of July and Christmas, but overall we remain steady year-round,” Chelsea says.

Several of their princesses have moved on to engage in other communities, booking jobs on cruise ships and even living in the promised land—Disney World. It’s not surprising given that these princesses and superheroes love what they do.

“They all really do enjoy interacting with the children,” Chelsea says, noting that they have a really loyal fan base.

“Some families will book four or five years in a row, choosing a different princess each time,” Chelsea says. “We feel blessed to be able to do this full-time.

ines for Life is returning for its ninth year this August. Since 2010, the fundraiser has raised more than $250,000 for three local charities — Creating Hope, Indy SurviveOars and Team Luke. The charities are Geist-local and allow patients going through cancer to experience art, music, meditation and camaraderie. The charities joined forces to raise awareness and hope for those living with cancer.

As in years past, a private Sponsor Reception will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a wine tasting event at 7 p.m. Guests will sample wines from California, including: Trefethen Family Vineyards, Cakebread Cellars, Black Stallion Winery, Cooper Mountain Vineyards and Mauritson Wines.

Local craft breweries will also be serving their latest beers — Wooden Bear Brewing and Sun King. Several Kentucky bourbons will also be available on the outdoor deck, as will Tito’s Handmade Vodka. If you want the ultimate pairing, cigars will also be available on the deck.

The annual event is Friday, August 16 from 7-10 p.m. at Daniel’s Vineyard in McCordsville. It features fine wine, craft beer, spirits, gourmet food, music, a charity boutique and a live auction. The fundraiser is later in the year than in previous years so the event can fully utilize Daniel’s Vineyard, namely its outdoor patio.

“We’re trying to bring local people and give some local entities some exposure as well,” says Todd Andritsch, Vines for Life co-founder.

Local restaurants will be sampling their signature appetizers, too. Choices include Ale Emporium’s Hermanaki wings, Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill cajun scallops, FoxGardin’s Swedish meatballs, Murphy’s Craft House cheeseburger sliders, hummus & pita and jumbo shrimp, Stone Creek Dining Company’s pomegranate BBQ shrimp & barely fruit salad and Wolfie’s at Geist’s award-winning mac & cheese.

The event is open to the public and anyone can buy a ticket. Andritsch says that the event is perfect for those looking for a fun night out.

“It’s a really nice night out,” he says. “It is affordable, but it’s also really well done.

There will be lots of good wines and good food and good company. A number of couples use it to go and have a night out. It’s close, so you don’t have to go downtown to do it, and we give back to the community and help fight cancer.”

Parking for this event will be free and attire is casual elegance. Tickets are $75 per person and space is limited to 275 guests.

The Fort Ben Farmers Market is open rain or shine from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and hosts close to 40 vendors, including food trucks. As an alternative to a standard weekend farmers market, the weeknight time accommodates busy families.

“Having the market in the evening is good because people can swing by on the way home from work,” says Mandy WrightJarrett, director of the market. “Families get too busy on weekends. They can have dinner together and enjoy a fun night of activities on a Thursday night.”

Visitors to this year’s market can see many returning vendors but also new ones.

Grace & Truth Farms from Rossville sell certified organic turkeys. They also offer chicken, pork and eggs, vegetables and fruits, plus some prepared items. All are organically raised, chemical free and nonGMO. Another familiar vendor is Biltz Greenhouses & Produce. Their stand is filled with seasonal fruit, berries and vegetables. Family-owned Dragonwood specializes in honey and maple sugar products and is located in Tipton County.

The Wraparoni food truck serves up burritos and bowls that incorporate macaroni and cheese along with ingredients such as barbecue pork and cheesy alfredo chicken.

“This is the third year for the Fort Ben Farmers Market,” Wright-Jarrett says. “In 2017, Lawrence Mayor Steve Collier saw a need for a community farmers market. He hired the director of the Original Farmers Market at the Indianapolis City Market, Stevi Stoesz, to get it up and running. Last year, she recruited me and this year I am running it on my own.

“My goal is to make the market more diverse and welcoming to all in the community,” she adds. “Lawrence has a large population of Latino families in the area and we are hoping to attract more vendor that fit in

Across from the purveyor booths is a large green space where activities take place. At the Reading Tree, volunteers read children’s books both in English and Spanish. Twice a month, patrons are treated to live music.

For 24 years, Lori Brown of Skin Crafters has been helping people of all ages who have all but given up hope of clearing their acne through prescription medications.

The sun is out, warmer weather has finally arrived and summer is here — it is officially boating season. For Geist and Fishers residents, summertime means loading up the boat and heading out to Geist Reservoir with friends and family for days of fun on the lake.

With so many boaters out on the reservoir, someone has to patrol the waters to keep the community safe — enter the Geist Boat Patrol.

For Fishers Police Officer Mike Janes, summer is the busiest time of the year.

Lt. Janes heads up the Geist Boat Patrol during the late spring and summer months. The patrol hits the water primarily on the weekends starting Memorial Day through Labor Day, but it wasn’t always that way.

“Prior to Fishers annexing a lot of the homes around Geist, they annexed the land under the water, so de facto, the lake is our responsibility,” Lt. Janes says. “We would get complaints about excessive noise and other boating issues, but we didn’t have a boat to get out on the water at the time. So, we started looking at how to alleviate the issue. In 2011, we started doing some co-boat patrols using our Fishers Fire Department boat. In 2012, the Fall Creek Township purchased a new boat for Fishers co-branded as a public safety boat.” atGeist.com / JULY 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 25

What many people may not know is that the Boat Patrol unit is a dual response team made up of all Fishers Police and Firefighters — all of which serve on a voluntary, part-time basis.

“We usually have two officers out on the boat, and the fire department heads out occasionally as well,” Lt. Janes says.

“Our officers are all trained to run the fire pump on the boat, too. Our goal has been to achieve voluntary compliance with the laws and ordinances of Fishers. We have done a good job of that. The primary reason we are out there is to make it a safe boating environment for everyone that lives or recreates on or near the water.”

The boating patrol heads out to the marina usually around early afternoon on the weekends for each shift, prepping the boat for the day and making sure all systems are operating properly. They are usually out there in the afternoon through the evening. The Geist Boat Patrol has several main areas out on the lake that they keep an eye on.

“We focus on the two main coves that people hang out in — Cambridge Cove, or many refer to it as Cocktail Cove, and Family Cove,” Lt. Janes says. “We still spend time in the smaller areas, too.

We stop and talk to people when we see them. Probably our biggest complaints are noise ordinance violations or nowake zone violations where people are going faster than they should be in an idle zone.”

The Geist Boat Patrol has one, main boat that they use, and it’s got just about every feature and piece of technology that the FPD and FFD needs. Not to mention, you can’t miss it. The 27-foot Boston Whaler is quite an impressive sight to see out on the reservoir.

“One of the reasons that our boat is so big is because it is also used for dive operations,” Lt. Janes adds. “If we are in an urgent situation looking for someone that has just gone under the water, when we dive we send one diver at a time with two back up divers on the boat. It means a lot of equipment and people on the boat.

“The Fall Creek Township, when they purchased this boat for us, really provided us with great equipment. We have a flare unit on it as well, similar to what helicopter systems have, that picks up heat signatures of people and boats. The sonar unit also paints us a picture of the bottom of the lake to pinpoint where things are at.”

It’s certainly not an episode of Baywatch, but the Geist Boat Patrol has handled some interesting situations over the years.

“We’ve had a few crashes over the last few years, but thankfully we’ve been fortunate in that category,” Lt. Janes says. “Typically those crashes involve people being impaired or not operating their boat in a safe manner.

We strongly encourage people to take some type of boaters education class.

“Sometimes we get some crazy calls, though it has calmed down quite a bit in recent years. Still, every once in a while there is someone who wants to take off parts of their swimsuit, and we have to remind them that is not acceptable behavior. We had a guy one year that tried to choke a goose.

He dove in the water after the goose and, of course, the goose didn’t take too kindly to that. Overall, we are pretty fortunate because the majority of people out on the lake are out there to enjoy themselves within reason.”

One of the frequent issues Lt. Janes says that the patrol sees is boaters, both drivers and passengers, not wearing some sort of flotation device. For those that aren’t the biggest fans of life jackets, he highly recommends it.

“We require our officers to wear a personal flotation device,” he says. “We have ones that automatically inflate if we go about 14 inches under water. We want to set a good example out on the lake, so we always have them on when we are operating the boat. The life preserver can truly save lives.

Our diving team has not had to recover a drowning victim who was wearing a personal flotation device. You never know when or where you are going to be involved in a crash.”

Over the years, the Geist Boat Patrol has built up a solid rapport with the Geist community and those out on the lake. Lt. Janes says that relationship is an important 26 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2019 / atGeist.com

“We usually kick off the boating season by meeting with many homeowners in Cambridge, and we answer any questions they might have,” he says. “We want to foster those relationships with community members living along the water. There is always a boating safety day as well. We have developed really good relationships with the regulars out on the water, too. They see us and wave us over just to talk.”

For Lt. Janes, he has been a part of the Fishers Police Department since 2003. In total, he has been in law enforcement for 19 years now.

The Geist Boat Patrol, he says, is one of his favorite parts of the job each year.

“I’ve always loved being out on the water,” Lt. Janes says. “Working with the FPD has given me a lot of neat opportunities to do that. Personally, I love the fact that I can get paid to go out on the water. Much of it is building relationships and getting to know those regulars out on the lake. It is similar to patrolling on the road in a police vehicle, but on the boat it seems like we are much more approachable because it is easy for someone to wave us over and ask us a question.

Families sometimes wave us over with their younger kids wanting to say hi and get a photo with us. It’s fantastic.”

When you see the Geist Boat Patrol out on the lake this summer, be sure to thank them for keeping the waters safe.

BOATER SAFETY 101 WITH LT. JANES 1. Always wear a PFD. You must have one appropriately sized life vest for each person on your boat. If your boat is 16 feet or greater, you must also have a Type IV - throwable PFD. They must also be readily accessible.

2. Operating a boat while intoxicated is never acceptable.

Those doing so will be arrested and will have their vehicle driving privileges suspended.

3. No wake zones or idle zones are defined as traveling the slowest possible speed, not to exceed 5 MPH, so as to maintain steerage and produce minimal wake.

4. From sunset to sunrise you must have navigation lights on and the maximum speed is 10 MPH.

5. When towing a person behind your boat or PWC, you must have an observer in addition to the boat operator.

6. You may not operate a watercraft in a dangerous manner.

Operation must be reasonable and prudent at all times.

7. Do not overload your boat.

Most boats have a capacity plate that will state how many passengers or the maximum weight the boat is designed for.

8. Littering into the water is illegal.

9. Become familiar with the waters you are boating on.

Talk to those familiar with the area regarding known hazards such as shallow areas or rocks.

10. Take the time to invest in your safety.

Take a boater safety education course. These may also earn you an insurance discount.

When a customer contacts ONiT, a dedicated scheduling coordinator finds out the details of the potential project. An estimator is then scheduled to meet with the client on site. “During the estimation process, it’s a great time for questions and explanations of what possible options there might be. By using an iPad, a free quote is given right then and also emailed to the customer,” Elliott says.

Within a couple of days, the customer is contacted to see if they have additional questions. When they are ready to proceed, the scheduler works with them to set a

date for work to begin. A project manager is assigned to answer all questions and facilitate communication. At each point in the process, clients deal with people who serve specific roles in the company.

“We are very focused on the customer experience, not just the end result, but the process it took to get there,” Elliott says.

“Whatever someone’s role is, that’s what they do for the business. The estimators find the best approach to a project, our project managers communicate and coordinate throughout the job, which leaves the

painters to be able to just focus on painting.

Our goal is to support our customers by not having a team stretched too thin by individuals who wear too many hats.”

Equally obsessed with both cats and journalism as a kid, when I was 10 years old, I penned a periodical called Christy’s Cuddly Cats Magazine wherein I researched, wrote, and edited all of the articles. I then proceeded to go doorto-door, marketing my baby and selling each individually-typed manuscript to neighbors for 50 cents apiece, ultimately netting a whopping $8.50 for my 40 hours of labor. The endeavor may not have been a monetary landslide, but it did stoke my desire to pursue a career as a professional writer. The same thing may very well happen for local kiddos who sign up to participate in the 3rd Annual Biz Kidz Market Day to be held July 20 from 8 a.m. until noon at the Fishers Farmers Market.

“It’s crazy popular,” says Annabeth Stem, the Market Manager. During its inaugural year, just 15 kids participated. Last year, however, that number more than doubled. They estimate 40 registrants again this year and plan for the market to stretch clear down to City Hall.

“It’s almost becoming an event within an event,” says Stem, who is always astounded by the level of creativity that children bring to their tables. “Everything from the way they decorate their booths to how they display their merchandise is so impressive.

It’s not a card table with a bunch of stuff thrown on it. These kids go all out!”

“Kids have to think, ‘What is something I can make that people would be interested in buying?’ And then, ‘How should I display it and talk about it to entice customers?’” says Stem. Pricing items can be another challenge.

“They learn that they need to price it high enough to make money back to ideally cover their costs but not too high that people won’t buy it,” say Stem. Speaking of expenses, though there was talk of waiving a booth fee, staff ultimately decided that it

was a part of learning about expenditures so they charged a nominal fee.

Parents of the really young entrepreneurs assist a bit. For instance, last year 4-yearold Chef Henry enlisted his mother’s help in creating spice combinations. Most participants in Biz Kidz Market Day, however, fly solo. (The average aged Biz Kid is between 8 and 12.)

“Parents mostly help with the logistics of hauling tents and tables around,” says Stem.

“But you can tell kids do most everything when it comes to business storefront, signage, price tags, and displays.”

Both of Stem’s daughters participated last year.

“My oldest was just on it! She stood at the table, greeted everyone who came by, and sold all of her stuff,” says Stem. “My younger one, on the other hand, sat in a chair and kind of waited. She went home with a bunch of stuff, so it was a good little lesson in customer service!”

Lilly Valentine, 11, who makes Kawaii clay charms by hand, started the business Claymates. Last year she made approximately 40 charms and nearly sold out of all her items. Her mom Maryclare reports that the most popular themed charms were food, sports, animals, and BFF necklaces.

“I loved Biz Kidz day because it’s fun to make things out of clay and see people wearing my creations,” says Lilly. “I learned how to create a small business, and it will be even better this year!”

New to the event this year, the Farmers Market is adding a small stage where children can sign up to entertain the crowd by singing and/or playing a musical instrument. Come check out the Biz Kidz Market Day on July 20! It’ll be a go, rain or shine!

IGNORE THE DRESS CODE No one likes to feel out of place when it comes to attire. Being both overdressed or underdressed can cause you to feel uncomfortable in any social gathering. For Angie Bender, and Sarah Potter, a firstgrade teacher and a kindergarten teacher at Harrison Parkway Elementary (HPE), they were just trying to fulfill their service learning goal for the 2018-19 school year.

What the duo ended up accomplishing was much more.

To accomplish the goal, the two teachers planned an event, Million Meal Movement, with the help of their classes. The teachers simply wanted to teach their classes how to give back to the community but instead turned it into a school-wide event.

The movement was a day-long event on May 14, with the help of Ed Martin Toyota. The dealership made a generous donation of $10,0000, which was used to make 29,000 healthy, ready-to-cook meals for hungry Hoosiers. The meal packs, which included ingredients to make rice casserole, were donated to the Delaware Food Pantry.

Bender says that she and Potter first learned about Million Meal Movement in fall 2018 after doing some research on how their two classes could give back to the community. After reaching out to Shane Scarlett, the general manager for Million Meal Movement, he told them how students could get involved.

“Shane came to HPE so the kids could ask questions about the organization,” Bender says. “The kids really started to understand that 1 in 5 children in Indy have food insecurity. Shane told the children how they needed $10,000 for every student in HPE to participate.”

Bender’s class took to Google Maps to find a local business to sponsor their event, where they discovered that Ed Martin Toyota was just in their backyard.

Although Bender and Potter had already reached out to the dealership and secured funding, their classes still wrote to Ed Martin Toyota, asking for sponsorship.

“They went crazy and cheered,” Bender says. “Some looked like they were in shock because they couldn’t believe that their powerful words were making a difference.”

Bender wanted more for her students — she wanted the littlest learners in the school to be leaders for the event. To do so, her class made mini packs, which served as a time to practice making the packs before the real thing. Her students made a video of it, showing other classrooms how the packs are made.

“They learned how to set up the assembly line and all of the different jobs, so they could go over and help the other classes,” Bender says. “We made a video for the other students, so they’d have a vision of what they’d be doing.”

The night before, Potter, Bender and Bender’s husband set up the assembly lines for the event, which took place in an empty showroom at Ed Martin Toyota. The next day, students walked to the dealership from HPE and packed meals. They funneled rice and nutrients into the packs, weighed them and even had quality control to ensure there was no air in the packs.

Bender says that more than 120 students were in the showroom packing meals at a time. She estimates that around 600 students in total partook in the event.

“Seeing the children make a difference warmed the hearts of everybody who got to see it,” Bender says. “You could feel the buzz of excitement between students and teachers.”

Dr. David Geiger is excited about joining LADD Dental Group in McCordsville for many reasons.

A Geist native, Dr. Geiger graduated from Lawrence Central High School and attended DePauw University in Greencastle before meeting his wife Kelsey in dental school at the University of Louisville back in 2015. Kelsey decided to join the Air Force and the couple was stationed in California for a year after dental school, followed by Missouri where Dr. Geiger has honed his oral surgery skills.

Even while venturing out to the west coast after finishing dental school, Dr. Geiger always had his sights set on eventually returning to the Hoosier state where he grew up.

Last summer Dalton Albertin, director of marketing and business development with LADD Dental Group, reached out to Dr. Geiger about joining the LADD team at its McCordsville office, which opened in November of 2017. After Kelsey completed her service in the Air Force, the couple made plans to relocate to Central Indiana.

Kelsey has also joined the LADD team parttime at its Kokomo office.

“It’s such a great opportunity and we’re thankful to be coming home and start seeing family and friends,” Dr. Geiger says. “My mom is involved with Holy Cross Lutheran Church, and we have a ton of connections in the area.”
