For Larry Harnish, a good cigar is more than just something to smoke. For him, a cigar is a physical representation of celebration, relaxation and community — a symbol of unity and triumph for all to enjoy and something he has loved for much of his adult life. It was this belief in what a cigar means and a longtime interest in the culture that surrounds them that led Harnish to open his own cigar shop.

Maduro on Main, Harnish’s cigar shop, recently opened in March and occupies a space in the heart of Fortville to serve the community by providing a unique business unlike anything else nearby.

After years of working in a variety of different professional fields, Harnish decided it was time to step into the world of entrepreneurship and open his own business doing something he loved.

“A cigar makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something,” Harnish says.

“When champions win the Super Bowl or hoist the NBA trophy, they smoke cigars, when you get married you have cigars, at the birth of a child, you pass out cigars. Those are all good moments that you like to share, and I want to share that feeling to those that aren’t familiar with cigars. My shop is a little different than most cigar shops. When people think of cigar shops they think of a smoky place or white tile floors with cigarettes on the wall, and this isn’t like that.

It’s more of a lifestyle setting and a relaxing type of environment.”

While there are other cigar shops in Indianapolis, Indiana as a whole has a limited number of cigar shops, and Harnish hopes that his shop is able to work in collaboration with other shops in the area

to help grow cigar popularity in Indy, as well as provide a new option for those looking for quality cigars on the Northeast side. Each store has its own set of unique and distinguishing characteristics, and Maduro on Main finds its identity through a welcoming atmosphere, broad selection of cigars and an in-store inventory that stretches beyond just cigars and into apparel, smoking accessories and even the occasional “Cigars 101” class.

Going forward, Harnish hopes to expand the shop with a smoking patio while continuing to serve the Fortville community.

“I want to have a place that’s comfortable and becomes a destination for cigar shoppers on the Northeast side of town who maybe don’t want to fight the Indianapolis traffic, and I’ve tapped into that I think,” Harnish adds.

Maduro on Main is located at 11 S Main St in downtown Fortville. The shop is open Tuesday through Sunday for those seeking a unique atmosphere and a quality cigar.

Bogard, owner of Bogard Branding, which is also located in the building, says she recently renovated the property and named it after Marion Hall, the previous long-time owner.

Bogard adds that Marion refers to the building as his “treasure.” It’s a sentiment Bogard shares. She admired the building in Lawrence for years before buying it.

“I used to drive by it a lot and I always admired it,” she says. “I love the Fort Harrison area. When I bought the building, I wanted to name it after Marion Hall as a tribute to him. The building was his prize possession.”

“This property is a commercial space that was owned by Marion Hall for 20 years,” Bogard says. “He was the first civilian to own this property after Fort Harrison was deactivated. Marion had previously used the Marion attended a recent open house for

the newly renovated building.

Bogard adds that “the property is zoned commercial, and we are using it as office space for Bogard Branding and plan to rent out some of the office space to smaller businesses.”

The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

“According to what I have gathered, this building was built in 1908 by the Army for non-commissioned officers,” Bogard says. “It was built as two separate residences initially.”

completely updating the break room and bathrooms. The break room includes a solidly built older door that functions as part of the kitchen space. Bogard Branding’s office space also features older doors that serve as desks. Other noteworthy renovations include downstairs meeting spaces that are both eyecatching and comfortable.

“We wanted to really renovate the building and bring it back to life,” Bogard says. “We have six spaces upstairs that are available to rent.”

The cozy and fresh looking office spaces feature doorways with infantry unit style lettering above the doors as a nod to the

Fort Harrison days.

Bogard says the space is great for creative work. The beautiful building is also close to Jockamo Upper Crust Pizza, Café Audrey at the Fort, and Fort Harrison Park, among many other great places.

“This is a wonderful place for my office and work,” Bogard says.”Bogard Branding is a marketing company. We concentrate on rebranding for small to medium companies, which also include printed collateral, promotional items, apparel and retail point of purchase materials and displays.”

Arlissa Dumas recently won the Girl Scout Gold award.

It is only earned by seniors in the Girl Scouts and/or The Ambassadors. Dumas is a Senior in the Girl Scout ranking.

“It is the equivalent of an Eagle Scout Award,” Dumas says. “It is the highest award that a girl can get. It shows that I can be committed and dedicated to a cause and complete my goal! It really shows perseverance and determination.”

Dumas says she was recently selected to represent “The Girl” on The State Board of Directors for the Girl Scouts.

“I will assist the board with decision making,” Dumas says, “The goal is for me to bring the girls’ perspective to their decision-making process of the Indiana State Board of Directors.”

In addition to her heavy involvement with the Girl Scouts, Dumas is also on the High Honor Roll at school. She is in the school’s choir, on the swim team, and in the Cathedral orchestra. She also volunteers at her church, Barnes United Methodist Church, where she is inspired by her pastor, Charles R. Harrison.

Local Girl Scout Earns Top Honor – the Gold Award Writer / Matt Keating

Arlissa Dumas, a Cathedral High School student, recently won the Girl Scout Gold award, and is grateful for the prestigious honor.

“Researching, developing, finishing, and winning the Girl Scout Gold Award is an amazing achievement for me,” Dumas says.

“I feel very blessed to have been able to complete the award.”

Perseverance and dedication led to her winning the award, as did the extra hours she was willing to put in to reach her goals.

“It (the Girl Scour Gold Award) means a lot to me! I was able to show myself and the world that if I strive, I can achieve anything!

It was a lot of rewarding work.”

The Girl Scout Gold Award is very prestigious. Since it was founded in 1916, only one million girls have received the award. Dumas says she is “proud to be in that number.”

“Due to the time commitment and work involved, a majority of the girls that start the award do not complete it,” Dumas says.

“Only 5.4% of the girls in the U.S. complete the Gold Award annually.”

“At times it is very challenging,” Dumas says. “It is truly my faith, my relationship with God, my parents and grandparents that help to take me from place to place. I am also on the Speech and Debate Team at Cathedral.

During the month of March, I won first place in a Speech Competition at Marion University! I was also on the team to represent Cathedral at the State Competition in March.”

Dumas has a successful system of accomplishing all of her goals.

“I often write things down and it helps me to keep track of all the things (going on). I am also one of the top Girl Scout Cookie sellers in the state of Indiana. This year I sold over 2,000 boxes of cookies. I belong to a special cookie club. We are The Cookie Ambassadors. We do really cool things.

This year we are going to San Francisco and visit Yosemite.”

FISHERS RUNNING CLUB BOASTS MORE THAN 130 MEMBERS, CONTINUES TO MAKE COMMUNITY IMPACT

Longtime Fishers resident, Jeanette Payne, has watched the city grow from a small town to a community with an array of activity choices. However, an organized group for running seemed to take a while to come into being.

When Fishers Running Club, a volunteerbased not-for-profit group, finally began in 2016, she was one of the first to join. Today, Payne is president of the organization which now has more than 130 members, an elected board and local sponsors. Besides being a social club for runners of all levels, giving back to the community and focusing on both physical and mental health has become part of their mission.

“The original idea came from people on the board of the Geist Half Marathon,” Payne

says. “They saw lots of interest in Fishers.

At the time, I remember seeing fellow runners all over and thinking that a running club was definitely a missing piece that our community needed.”

The club has organized runs twice a week.

Every Wednesday for their Pub Crawl, Walk, Run Series members meet at local restaurants CR Heroes, Ale Emporium Fishers and Four Day Ray Brewing, and the run 15 minutes out and then turn around to run 15 minutes back. Saturday meet-ups vary with the seasons yet always involve a 60-minute run out and back. This past winter, the group met at a café venue for their Coffee Series or Geist Half Series.

The Geist K Series was held once a month in February, March and April for training and ran the same course as the Geist Half Marathon. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, members meet on Saturdays at locations such as Holland Park for the Park atGeist.com / JUNE 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 13

to Park Series. The club also sets up cheer tents at area races, too. Volunteers have water and snacks waiting for members when they cross the finish line.

“The club is truly for every kind of runner,” Payne says. “We have runners and walkers of all styles and ages. If you can put on shoes and join us, we don’t care how old you are. A few are younger kids and some are as old as 80. We have a great community of runners and we all support each other. We all like to hang out and wait around for everyone to finish.”

In its two-year history, the club has already made an impact on the community. Some of the projects it has tackled are the Toy and Clothing Drive for Foster Fairies and canned food drives for area food banks. An emphasis on improving mental health is an important initiative for the group. They have given support to Mission 22, a non-profit

organization that battles veteran suicide.

Their main concentration in 2018 was The Peyton Riekhof Foundation, which seeks to educate the community and schools on teen mental health issues in order to prevent suicide.

“As a group, we love giving back to our community,” Payne adds. “Mental Health is always one of our main areas of focus, and we support various mental health issues. We will have several teams participating in the Back on My Feet Relay, which combats homelessness, this year as well.”

Payne is grateful for the many partners and sponsors of all levels that support the Fishers Running Club. More than 15 organizations and businesses make contributions that range from providing snacks and water after races to donating the bright blue T-shirts that members wear. Besides the Pub Crawl, Walk, Run Series sponsors, other patrons are 131 Event Productions, Invisible Fence, Northpoint Dental Care, Road Runners Forum, Runners Club of America, Ascension St. Vincent and St. Vincent Sports Performance. One important partner is Pretzel Runner, a two-person company with an emphasis on yoga and running, that maintains the club’s website.

The club also enjoys the partnership of several races that members participate in such as the Carmel Marathon, Geist Half Marathon, Indy Women’s Half Marathon and Indianapolis Monumental Marathon.

Payne encourages anyone interested in running to check out Fishers Running Club and consider joining in the fun.

The club plans to have multiple teams participating in two future large runs.

Besides the September 22 Back on My Feet Relay at White River State Park, the 8-Hour Dream Endurance Race will be held on July 20 at Butler University.

“Exercise is a known reducer of anxiety and stress,” Payne says. “It’s definitely safer and more enjoyable to run with a group. We have great conversations while running and definitely support each other.”

Boardworks Studio Owner Darcie Hadley, a Fishers resident and Purdue University graduate, has always had a passion for art, design and working with people.

“I have always enjoyed designing and artistic crafts, social gatherings and the importance of making memories with friends and family,” Hadley says. “I decided [that I could] bring this all together and create a cozy atmosphere that brings friends and family together to create custom wood signs.”

“I started selling them on Facebook market sites and produced more than 400 by just posting Facebook images of designs you could select from,” Hadley says.

For one year, Hadley worked out of a 15x20 extra bedroom in her family’s home that she turned into a craft space before she decided to open a store of her own.

Now, the company is located in Fortville, a town that Hadley has loved watching grow and is only 10 minutes from her home in Fishers.

“There have been so many positive changes, from growing small boutiques, restaurants, salons and art studios, making Fortville’s quaint downtown setting pure Americana that some communities try to replicate,” Hadley says. “Main Street offers lots of activities for kids, parades, festivals and much more through the year so that families can enjoy time together making memories.”

With the return of warm weather comes one of the most popular outdoor activities in Fishers. The highly anticipated Fishers Farmers Market is held every Saturday morning, rain or shine, at 6 Municipal Drive in the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater behind City Hall. This year, the market season will run all the way from May through October 26 from 8:00 am to noon.

As in the past, the market has something for everyone such as children’s activities, live music, deliciously prepared food and more than 50 vendor stalls which offer everything from fresh produce to organic dog treats.

Patrons can also count on some new special events this year.

“Our Farm Hands Kids’ Program returns each week, June through August,” says Sarah Sandquist, Director of Parks and Recreation for Fishers. “Kids have the atGeist.com / JUNE 2019 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 19

opportunity to engage in the local food system through educational games, crafts, demonstrations and exposure to new fruits and vegetables.

“New this year, we are offering market tours with a nutritionist on May 18, July 13 and September 21,” she adds.

“Registered Dietician Amanda Garant will guide small group tours around the market to visit different vendors and discuss what produce is in season, nutrition

and cooking tips. Amanda will also be available between tours to answer food and nutrition-related questions.”

To be a vendor at the market, potential participants must fill out an application and go through a selection process.

Several new vendors made the cut and will add to the field of quality products available. They include Bettini Pasta, Christopher Farm, organic produce, Indie Coffee Roasters, coffee concession, Native Bread, artisan gluten free bread, Tailored Toddies, handcrafted cocktail mixes, and Viking Lamb.

Varied events will be held during the market season. Opening day, May 4, was Star Wars Day in a partnership with Hamilton East Public Library. The Health and Wellness Expo was held on May 18. New to 2019 is the June 18 Green Fair. On June 29 the Spark!Fishers Market will be held in conjunction with the Second Annual Spark!Fishers Festival.

“July 20 will be the Biz Kidz Market and, for the first time, the Fishers Freebirds will host the August 24 Senior Citizen’s Day,” Sandquist says. “The Fall Harvest Festival will be September 21 and October 26, closing day, will also be something new for 2019, the Monster Market.”

“Come early. Some vendors will sell out,” she says. “This year we are also working to reduce waste and asking patrons to bring their own reusable bags. Single-use plastic shopping bags will not be provided by vendors.”

Camp Belzer Ranger Kevin Hobbs is ready for another summer of fun at the 200-acre facility, which has become an Indianapolis institution.

“This is the 101st year of Camp,” Hobbs says. “It was originally founded as the Indianapolis Boy Scout Reservation. It later became Boy Scout Reservation of Indianapolis in 1922, and in 1923, it became Camp Chank-Tun-Un-Gi. It later became Chief Belzer Reservation in 1948 and was called Camp Belzer.”

Hobbs says that a group of dedicated people have helped the camp grow over the years.

“It was formed by a group of Indianapolis investors who wished for a place for Scouts to camp,” Hobbs says. “In 1948, the name was changed to honor Chief F. O. Belzer, the longtime Chief Scout Executive in Indianapolis.”

Hobbs estimates that 2,500-3,000 youth from ages five-17, both boys and girls, attend the camp each summer. Camp Belzer, 6102 Boy Scout Road, Lawrence, is surrounded by forest in the middle of the city. It has been acclaimed as one of the best day camps around.

“The summer camp lasts for five one-week periods, from Monday through Friday,” Hobbs says. “The camp gives children the opportunity to experience the great outdoors and to learn and challenge their skills.”

Camp Belzer’s goal is to provide new experiences of the highest quality for every child who enters their gate.

“The activities include swimming, hiking, BB guns, archery, rafting, physical challenge courses, crafts, STEM activities and games,” Hobbs says.

“This year, we are going to have a GaGa pit and bounce houses,” Hobbs says. “We also have a great activity center that is used for conferences, weddings, birthday parties and celebrations in general.”

He stresses that Camp Belzer keeps everything practical and unique for every child’s visit. Other activities include BB gun shooting and safety, swimming and outdoor cooking opportunities.

“The activities increase youth confidence and physical activity (without their phones),” Hobbs says. “They also learn how to get along with others and work as a team.”

A hot lunch is included Monday through Friday for all Cub Scouts. Adults may purchase the same lunch for $3 a person, payable at the Leader’s Meeting each day.

“Camp Belzer is geared for the younger youth in the summer, although the Baden Hobbs adds that he and the staff at the camp Powell Camp held here also is geared for keep things fresh by adding new activities.

Camp Belzer also has a Belzer Trading Post featuring snacks, souvenirs and T-shirts.

Non-Scout tag-a-longs are welcome to attend for a daily fee, paid at camp each day. Everyone in camp must submit a completed health form.

For children with special needs, many people, experts included, cannot see beyond the label, so programs intended to help them can, unfortunately, limit their ability and the community’s ability to see their true potential. One parent took a chance and asked Paula Lord, former elite gymnast, gymnastics trainer and owner of Body by GymRoots, a Pilates and personal training studio in Fishers, if she would allow her special needs daughter to take a class with her. Lord rents space from DeVeau’s School of Gymnastics and is a member club for USA Gymnastics, and she jumped at the opportunity.

called DeVeau’s Show Team by Gym Roots.

“For many of the kids with Down Syndrome, for example, it is more of a way to keep them busy because of their low muscle tone so they do it for the fitness aspect,” Lord adds. “And yet some of the kids just absolutely love to perform and use it for a performing outlet. This has also provided a social outlet as many of the students get together outside of the class and they go to movies together and do other activities.”

The most important thing that Lord wants people to know about the program is that it is a unified group.

“We not only have kids with special needs but typical peers that are in the class,” Lord says. “I am teaching a wide spectrum of ability levels and everyone, no matter who is in the group, you are always teaching something to someone that you know that they don’t. It is not only the typical kids helping the special need kids, it is the special needs kids helping the younger kids or teaching them something too.”

Paula is thrilled to use her lifelong passion, “to educate anyone who will listen about the benefits of maintaining a healthy functioning body in the pursuit of a happy, active life without pain. My greatest joy is watching my kids come through the program, and they may start with an arm that is completely paralyzed begin to work, then begin to support weight and eventually all roads lead to improved self-confidence because they truly understand what it means to have to work hard to get better.”

The program trains on Wednesdays from 6-8 and Saturdays 9-12:30 at DeVeau’s, and they invite anyone interested to come in and see what they have going on.

Strough’s has been around for more than 50 years.

Strough’s Supermarket, 624 Madison Street, Fortville, has been a neighborhood institution for decades. It’s the kind of store where you become a familiar face quickly.

Sabrina Harmon, the head cashier for Strough’s Supermarket, adds that the store has a long and happy history.

Harmon, who has worked at the store for close to 31 years, believes Strough’s Supermarket has stayed popular because “it was the only grocery store in town.”

Shoppers have been known to drive to the supermarket from many miles away to get specific items and have become like family to Strough’s employees.

“It opened in 1949,” she says. “The Strough brothers, Lloyd and Bud, started it as a twopump gas station and mini-mart and built on in later years,” Harmon says.

Whitney and Andrew Klein are experts when it comes to barbecue.

They love sharing their enthusiasm for great food with restaurant goers, so they opened Trax BBQ, 7724 Depot Street, McCordsville, last November.

The creation of Trax BBQ came out of their catering business, No Coast Cuisine, also at the same address.

“Once Andrew left the corporate world, we started the No Coast Cuisine catering company,” Whitney says. “We found a commissary to rent and started doing weddings and corporate lunches. We discovered we could feed a lot of people at a good price with pulled pork, so we started smoking more meats and catering out barbecue-style fare.”

After growing their business, and collecting equipment, the Kleins realized they needed their own catering kitchen and started the search to purchase some property.

“That search led us to Scarlet Lane Brewery, and things just fell into place,” Whitney says.

“By chance, we came across some barbecue equipment for sale and decided to open a barbecue joint, in addition to the catering kitchen, in the same warehouse as Scarlet Lane Brewery. We already spent a year building relationships with the brewery, and their customers, so it made sense to start providing that service on a regular basis in the same building.”

They went to work to renovate the front part of the warehouse and turn it into a casual

“So far, we have had a wonderful response to the food,” Whitney says.

brisket,” Whitney says. “The ribs are always fresh smoked, and we just added smoked whole bone-in chicken wings to the menu.”

The fresh pickle slices and macaroni & cheese are also fan favorites.

“Another one of our best sellers is the Big Friggin Meat Combo, a quarter sheet pan combo, with three meats, two sides, Trax slaw, pickles and Texas toast, which feeds one to two people,” Whitney says. “It’s hands down our number one selling item.

We also have vegetarian options, and all the meats are available by the pound and side dishes by the pint.”

Whitney says that they have tried to keep the menu simple, yet cater to individual needs, too.

“All our smoked meats can be purchased as meals, sandwiches or by the pound or piece,” Whitney says. “Our sides are made from scratch as well as our signature Carolina-Style sauces. We also offer catering services (picked up or delivered).”

Whitney adds that barbecue varies from state to state, and Trax BBQ is “Carolina Style.”

Lost Dutchman Rare Coins (LDRC) is one of Indianapolis’ premier coin shops. It is a family business that was started by John Dinger, in 1984, for his son, Matt Dinger, who had a passion for coin collecting. Both John and Matt still work at the coin shop and are known as numismatists. John named the store because he is of Dutch descent and was inspired by the Lost Dutchman silver mine in Arizona.

Matt has been selling coins since he was 15 years old. Because of his coin knowledge, he has been featured in Coin World Magazine, The Numismatist Magazine, CoinAge Magazine, Wall Street Journal and many other publications. He has previously served as the President of the

Indianapolis Coin Club and attends nearly every major coin convention that takes place in the United States.

It is truly a family affair at the Lost Dutchman, as Evan Munden, son in law of John Dinger, is a Senior Numismatist and manages the shop. There are a few other experienced employees, contributing to more than 125 years of combined experience in coins and currency.

Dealing rare coins is big business. The rarest coin the Lost Dutchman sold was an 1864-S, $10 gold piece, which was made in San Francisco. That coin sold for $99,000.

Recently, they sold a 1795 $10 gold piece (which was the first year $10 gold pieces were made) for $43,000.

clients that walk through the door are locals.

The coin shop purchases coins from the public or they buy inventory from other dealers. Many coins are sold throughout the country through a network of dealers or online through eBay. The coin shop has been well received in the Lawrence community over the years.

They have a good reputation, are known for being very knowledgeable and also buy scrap gold jewelry.

Often folks inherit a family estate and bring in a bag of old coins to sell.

“People bring in coins from a coil accumulator, as we like to call them,” Munden says. “There’s not a real rhyme or reason to the collection, just a bag of miscellaneous coins that somebody thought was cool.”

Silver and collectible coins are rarely found in circulation within the economy. That stopped happening about 10 to 15 years ago when the silver prices started to rise and everyone started looked more closely at the change they were given.

Munden says that his favorite part of being in this business is that every day is like a treasure hunt.

“I’ve certainly developed an appreciation of old coins through this work,” he says. “I appreciate the history and the story that goes with each coin.”

The impact the organization has made on the lives of local Hamilton County kids, and their parents, has already been far-reaching.

“Neither my daughter or I have any musical background, but we both love music, and we love the impact we are having on these kids’ lives,” McFarland says. “To have parents at our shows with tears running down their face because they see their kid who, before this might have been spending most of their time locked in their bedroom playing video games, and here they are up on stage as the lead singer or playing guitar in The Rolling Stones show. The parents just can’t believe it.

“There are kids at these big high schools that aren’t plugged into anything,” he adds.

“It is just as important for parents who are trying to find that thing for their kids, too.

Today, the School of Rock house bands in Fishers and Carmel play all over Indianapolis including venues like Alley’s Alehouse at Pinheads in Fishers, Hard Rock Cafe, Old National and the Irving Theater, among others. The kids all range in age and skill level as they continue to learn and rehearse each week.

The School of Rock kids will tell you much of the same.

“This is the best thing I’ve ever done,” says Easton, a 16-year old Bass player. “I’ve met my best friends here. The staff is super caring about the students, and they treat it like an actual band. School of Rock doesn’t just teach you how to get better, it inspires

you to play by yourself, and music becomes a passion rather than a hobby.”

“All the people here are really nice and funny, and I love that this is a place for kids who want to make friends and find something they really like to do,” adds Ava, a 12-year old guitarist.

The School of Rock kids are performers and devoted to their craft. The kids rehearse and practice often, making sure to nail their solos and be ready for their performances each week.

The hard work shows. Anyone who has been to a house band show finds out quickly that the School of Rock students are quite talented.

“In the world of basketball, you have Nike scouting all of the AAU basketball tournaments looking for the next big star,” McFarland says. “We are the ‘AAU’ of music that has all the best kids performing.

Now we have Atlantic Records and others wanting to sign some of these kids at a young age.

“Most kids are doing it for fun, obviously, but they all grow and develop. These kids know they have to show up and prepare, and they take it seriously. Who wants to practice because you have to practice? They practice because they are getting ready for a show.

Getting up on stage, they love it.”

McFarland plans to keep on rocking. The School of Rock owner hopes to open more locations around Central Indiana in the

Whether more locations are on the horizon or not, the goal, he says, will remain the same for School of Rock.

“Our mission statement is to inspire kids to rock on stage and in life,” McFarland says.

“We start off all of our meetings always asking, ‘How are we inspiring the kids?’

Twenty years down the road, the music scene in Indianapolis will have changed.

All of these kids, when they get older, are going to want to go to restaurants, bars and clubs where they can watch live music.

We’ve got 200 kids every year learning to play classic Rock & Roll. If you do that for 20 years, that is a lot of consumers for live music. I think School of Rock can have a significant impact on Indianapolis and the music scene here.”

Los Agaves Grill, located at 5965 W. Broadway, McCordsville, serves delicious Mexican cuisine that Geist area residents have been devouring in droves.

Hugo Zavala, the Los Agaves owner, says he couldn’t be more delighted that the restaurant has been well received by Geist, Fortville, and McCordsville residents. He gets a lot of repeat customers.

“The restaurant has been open for two years now,” Zavala says. “But, my team and I actually purchased Los Agaves Grill a year ago on Oct. 3, 2017 to be exact.”

Zavala noted there are different reasons why Los Agaves has taken off.

“The city of McCordsville has enjoyed us in several ways,” Zavala says. “One, we are one of the few main restaurants in the town, and we run different promotions throughout the week. We have $1 Taco Tuesdays and Half Price Margarita Wednesday.”

The establishment also runs several events throughout the year, such as drink specials and a mechanical bull ride on Cinco de Mayo, and a tent party and DJ on Mexican Independence Day on Sept. 16.

Zavala says customer favorites include “La Parrillada (steak, chicken and chorizo on bed of rice covered in queso dip), Arroz Con Pollo, and our Carne Asada.”

Los Agaves also serves the popular Tacos De Carne Asada, with Grilled Angus steak in three soft corn tortillas with onions, cilantro and pico de Gallo. Tomatillo salsa and black beans are served on the side.

Other favorites include its Fajitas; the Spicy Chicken and Shrimp Chipotle; and the Bandera Burrito, with sautéed chicken, steak, shrimp, chorizo, beans, onions, rice, lettuce, pico de Gallo, and guacamole all stuffed inside. The Bandera Burrito is topped with three sauces to represent the colors of the Mexican flag.

Zavala noted that Los Agaves has a very large menu with a distinctive variety of meal options. Several seafood choices include Camarones a la Diabla, a shrimp sautéed in butter, garlic, and their delicious diabla salsa, served with rice, lettuce, pico de Gallo, and avocado.

Zavala says that he and his family love McCordsville.

“I love the fact that it is small town, and how quiet it can be,” Zavala says. “I love all the people. Everyone is so nice, and we have Geist Reservoir so close to us.

I have a beautiful wife and two amazing kids. My son, Luis, will soon be nine, and my daughter, Alejandrina, will be four in December.”

Zavala added that he is extremely grateful to his guests.
