Downtown 24 Redeveloping Fishers | Beth Taylor

In August, earthmoving equipment initiated the first phase of creating a new vibrant center for the Town of Fishers. Community planners have long envisioned creating a downtown destination for residents. Redeveloping the downtown area of Fishers will help to create jobs and provide sustainable growth as the town becomes a city. hough Susan Goodman Komen fought breast cancer just as many women and even some men do, she is remembered as one who made an effort to make life better for others instead of focusing only on herself. Today Susan G. Komen represents the largest mass movement against breast cancer. Since 1982, Komen has invested $2 billion in community outreach and global research studying the causes, treatments and cures of breast cancer. Komen Central Indiana is one of four affiliates in the state. Of the funds raised, 75 percent of proceeds stay within our community, implementing grant programs aimed in helping 30,000+ low-income Hoosiers within 21 counties. The remaining 25 percent of funds are applied to global research grants seeking specific causes, improved treatments and lifelong cures for breast cancer.

COMPASSION CAN BE CONTAGIOUS Born and raised as a Hoosier, Dana attended Hanover College. She studied chemistry/biology, thinking she would become a microbiologist, but fate drew her to the nonprofit world instead. She admits, “I have always had a passion for caring for those with low income.” She recalls an unforgettable moment as she was volunteering one morning with onsite registration for “Race for the Cure.” She asked a participant if she was running as a survivor, and the woman replied with tears in her eyes, “Well I thought I was, but I just found out I’m not.” She had been to the doctor the day before to learn that her cancer had metastasized. Dana felt an instant emotional letdown and gave the woman a hug, reassuring her that she would be a survivor. This incident marked a turning point in Dana’s life as she recognized the crucial timeliness for taking action, being proactive and catching the cancer before it’s too late. OCTOBER 2013

One in eight women over the course of “their lifetime will get breast cancer. We f e a ttu urreed d

want to raise money and awareness. We believe you should be proactive and catch it early when survival is the highest. Surprisingly, most that get breast cancer don’t have a family history of it. My story isn’t any different than so many other women, but I had insurance. Not everyone is as lucky as I was.”

- Dana Curish, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Central Indiana & two-time breast cancer survivor Photo Courtesy of Toni Folzenlogel When Dana was first diagnosed, she remembers seeing a poster with four women, one of whom was fading in clarity. Its intended message was that only 74 percent of those with early diagnosis would survive beyond five years. Fortunately, she lived as part of this percentage. Unfortunately, a few years after she was appointed as the executive director for Komen, she developed cancer in her other breast which was unrelated to her first diagnosis 16 years earlier; it was discovered in the early microscopic stage. By the time she faced her second diagnosis, she was amazed at how far we’ve come because the current survival rate jumped from 74 percent to 98 percent with early diagnosis.

“My mother is the strongest, most inspirational woman I know,” says Kim Capelli, Dana’s daughter. “She has been a strong leader in her personal and work life for as long as I

can remember. In our crazy, busy lives, we don’t often take time to reflect, but each and every time I walk with my children to the Race in April and look at all the signs on the backs of the walkers and runners, I can’t help but think about my amazing mother. She is a survivor in the true sense of the word. When I wear the pink ‘in celebration of’ sign on my back, I think of her beating cancer, being a strong single mom, an amazing Nana to her grandchildren and a person who anyone would be proud to call a friend and coworker.” In addition to her daughter and four grandchildren, Dana inspires others without even trying. “Dana is strategic, compassionate, congenial and never forgets to keep our mission at the forefront, whether it’s while speaking at an event, visiting with volunteers, fundraising or even just editing a newsletter,” says Elise LeBlanc, Communications and Fundraising Coordinator at Komen. “The importance of what we do stays with her all the time, and it’s a tremendous weight to carry. She has carried it for herself as a two-time breast cancer survivor, for other survivors, those going through treatment, those who lost their battles

and those who haven’t yet been diagnosed but will eventually need help.” “We were in need of a good director who could take the organization to the next level, and Dana more than filled those shoes,” says Pam Miltner, Komen volunteer of 23 years and breast cancer survivor. “Being a survivor herself, she knew firsthand how important a cure for breast cancer was, and the way to a cure was research and helping those underinsured to have a chance to survive. She knew all the emotions we as survivors were feeling, and she was there to support us all. Our group of people who have worked on Race for the Cure and served on the board over the past 20 years have become known as the Komen family. Dana came into that group and became an important part of that family. She became our leader, and she was awesome!” Janet C. Striebel is a Fishers resident and freelance writer. She and her husband, Doug, have three children: Ryan, Jessica and Justin. She has been writing for neighboring atGeist. com for over seven years and claims that the best part is meeting all the interesting people in her community.

Facts & Stats • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed in her lifetime. • 90-95% of women diagnosed have no family history. • The two biggest risk factors are being a woman and getting older. • 2,000 men in the US will be diagnosed this year. • There are different types of breast cancer. Not all have a tumor. • It can take up to 10 years before a tumor grows large enough to feel on your own. • Mammograms can detect growths as small as a grain of salt. • You’re exposed to more radiation in a cross-country flight than in a mammogram. • Someone who is uninsured & diagnosed with breast cancer is 40% less likely to survive it.

Pink Tie Ball This annual event will take place February 22, 2014, at the Dallara IndyCar Factory. This is an elegant evening of dinner, dancing and celebrating survivors. Komen Central Indiana Race for the Cure The event date is set for April 12, 2014. Started in 1992, this event has grown to an average of more than 25,000 participants. Here is the schedule for the day: 7:30 am – Pink Parade of Survivors 8:30 am – 100 Yard Kids Dash 9:00 am – Competitive 5K 9:15 am – Non-Competitive 5K Walk/Run 9:30 am – 1 Mile Family Walk From the various vendors handing out goodies to dancing with the DJ, there is something fun for all ages to enjoy. You Can Help Save Lives Here

“We rely on volunteers for planning our special events,” says Dana. “There are only four of us working from this office in Indy….We need volunteers for planning our events and for talking at churches and elsewhere about early screening and detection.” Also Komen offers a variety of sponsorship opportunities to fit any company’s budget. Dana reminds us, “We’re here for two reasons: first, to make sure that everyone has access to early screening, regardless of where they live, their insurance coverage or anything, and second, to fund research so that we can find improved treatments, prevention and ultimately a cure….Essentially, we live here, we race here and we save lives here.” Go to komenindy.org to become a volunteer, a sponsor or to learn more. o c t o b e r 2 0 1 3 | atfishers.com 11 9/24/2013 2:30:46 PM

As Volleyball Director Emily Hawthorne walks through Incrediplex early Sunday morning, the freshly cleaned courts sparkle with volleyball nets and carts of balls lined up across the gym. At that moment, the air is quiet; however, the courts will be buzzing in a few short hours with players and coaches working hard, developing skills and maybe even having a little fun along the way. While the Indiana Volleyball Academy (IVA) has run a competitive club volleyball program for years, the organization continues to grow and develop into much more than a standard club. As IVA heads into their 2013-2014 season, they provide a growing number of programs for girls and boys of all ages and experience levels, including Lil’ Spikers clinics for 4-10 year olds and a Fall Youth League open to 1st-8th graders. Elite and regional level club players start as young as third grade and can play through their senior year of high school, benefiting from many of the club’s services including sports performance training and a college recruiting coordinator. Many of these athletes continue their playing careers collegiately while others use the additional training and experience to become leaders on their middle school and high school teams. IVA enters its eighth club volleyball season with some new faces and team options joining their veteran coaches and core offerings. Training teams will be offered this season, providing quality practice and playing experience with a reduced time commitment. Teams practice at the Incrediplex twice a week, participate in a handful of local tournaments and receive a reduced uniform package, allowing IVA to offer this experience at a competitive price point perfect for the multisport athlete

or families with increasingly busy schedules. IVA welcomes several strong coaches to their staff this season, including college coach Travis Fuller (Purdue University) and Justin Kean (Marian University) who returns for his second year at IVA. Lawrence Central Varsity Coach Kyla Montgomery, who also has college coaching experience, joins fellow varsity coaches Steve Hawthorne, Mark St. Martin, Dee Dee Galligher and Rob Zajdel. IVA also welcomes two of the area’s top youth coaches, Jeanne Boss and Barb Tease, who have been extensively involved with Hamilton Southeastern Volleyball at the high school and middle school level. Regardless of which coach is leading the training, the mission and philosophy remain the same. From the beginner to the elite athlete, players are not only developed with first class technical training, but also with a focus on doing things the right way with teamwork, sportsmanship and character building opportunities, all in a positive and healthy environment for the athletes. Emily Hawthorne enters her second full club season as the Director of the IVA after spending previous years as an elite coach for the club. However, developing youth programs and working in club administration is nothing new for the veteran coach. Hawthorne started running youth programs 15 years ago in West Lafayette before settling in as the Varsity Coach at Zionsville Community High School. The Junior Eagles Volleyball Club, a feeder program Hawthorne started in 2005, continues today, giving youth players a place to play and develop in the Zionsville community.

“Looking back on my first few years of volleyball as a player, I realize how much of an impact coaches and sports teams can make in a person’s life,” said Hawthorne. “It has always been a goal of mine to be involved in a place like IVA. Our coaches truly care about the players and know that they have been given an incredible opportunity to be a positive influence in the lives of these young ladies.” Tryouts for all IVA club and training teams begin in late October with youth clinics and leagues running year-round. Summer and holiday camps as well as private and small group lessons are also available. Information on all of IVA’s programs and coaches can be found at www.clubiva.com. Club Director Emily Hawthorne can be contacted directly at 317-823-9555 x24 or director@clubiva.com.

Each of the 20 HSE schools also chose a Teacher of the Year. The teachers were lined up and ready for their public recognition at the Fishers/HSE football game in August, but a severe weather delay resulted in evacuation of the stadium.

Cumberland Road Elementary School teacher Meg Strnat was selected for 2013 Hamilton Southeastern (HSE) District Teacher of the Year. Strnat, a 4th grade teacher in the High Ability program, has taught for nine years as a second career. She has won many awards, including National Science Educator Finalist, 2013 HSE High School Most Inspiring Teacher and was also just announced as a Top 10 finalist for State Teacher of the Year. Strnat says the kids make teaching worthwhile. She enjoys setting an environment where kids who are ready can take the challenge. This creates independent learners who are not only involved in their learning process, but are making their own choices

HSE Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian Smith said, “Our teachers of the year are high performers and great role models with positive attitudes and strong work ethics. They are well versed in their subject areas, know how to make learning fun and motivate students. They influence children’s lives.” We now congratulate them all for being such wonderful forces for our children each and every day!

Fire 1 signs

Making Dam Sure Correction

| Laurie Quinn

In light of the recent house fires in the Fishers area, take note of a sign that the Fishers Fire Department has started placing in certain areas around town. The signs serve two functions: first, to warn the fire department they are in an unhydranted area and must begin laying large supply lines, and second, the large supply hose needs to be secured in order for it to be pulled off the truck’s hose bed. The firefighter will wrap the supply hose around the strong metal sign post that is extended far into the ground to help anchor the line before the fire truck pulls away, allowing the hose to be deployed. These Fire 1 signs are placed in areas where a house is more than 1,000 feet away from a fire hydrant yet under 3,000 feet away. The purpose of this is to help the fire department know how many fire engines they are going to need. Each fire engine carries a 1,000 feet of supply hose. By using these signs, the fire fighters know if they are going to need additional engines to be able to hook up to the nearest hydrant. Should a house be more than 3,000 feet away from a hydrant, there is a special tanker truck that holds 3,000 gallons of water and 3,000 feet of supply hose. The Town of Fishers has one on order, and it will be available for use soon. Currently the Town of Fishers has a smaller tanker that carries 1,500 gallons of water and also carries two portable pools that are placed on the ground and filled with water so tankers can run water relay. These pools are used to supply the pumping engine that supplies the hose lines to fight fires. These signs are not meant to be permanent, but for now, the signs serve a purpose of helping our firefighters be proactive when a house is on fire and to get to a water supply as quickly as possible. These signs not only save our houses and possessions but can save lives.

In the September issue of the Geist & Fishers Community Newletters, we published a story with a statistical error. In our report, Making Dam Sure, we wrote that the dam is 799 feet in height. Actually, the dam is 799 inches in height – we failed to convert inches to feet. The correct height of the Geist dam is 66.58 feet. We regret the error. And, when you think about it, it’s kind of funny. If our reported height was correct, the dam would be 31 feet shorter than the Chase Bank Tower in downtown Indianapolis.

Can they do that? On-the-job disagreements can devastate a business. Employment disputes Non-compete agreements Discrimination claims General litigation

She is a member of what she called “an excellent team” collaborating on cancer at the molecular level using science, clinical trials and DNA research for a holistic approach to the disease. “We have made huge advancements over the past few years with certain kinds of cancer but are far from a general cure,” she said, adding that the important thing researchers now know is that breast cancer is not a singular disease. “We’re trying to figure out the various types of breast cancer and to not treat it as a general disease.”

Carmel Physician Among Hoosiers Searching for Answers to Breast Cancer | Neal G. Moore The insidious nature of breast cancer is well-documented. It is a disease not to be trifled with; a medical mystery with alltoo-often devastating outcomes. What is less well-known is the significance and sheer volume of groundbreaking research underway in central Indiana into the causes, prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Indeed a global asset for cancer researchers – The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis – is hailed as a critically important component in better understanding the elusive answers to why breast cancer happens and how best to treat it.

Instead researchers are collaborating in a field of study called “personalized medicine” – that is, understanding what is happening in an individual patient’s genes and its implications for cancer prevention and treatment. “We are moving in the right direction,” she said. “We want to know what’s wrong with the cell at the DNA and molecular levels to better choose drug treatments instead of treating cancer as a general disease.” Phase One clinical trials are underway at IU Simon Cancer Center which is among the few medical facilities using PARP inhibitors on humans. PARP is an enzyme (poly ADP ribose polymerase) present in breast cancer cells that, when inhibited by certain medications, can’t do its job in cellular division. “The whole point of the PARP inhibitor is it blocks the repair mechanism in cancerous cells,” Dr. Mina explained. Thus, the diseased cells die.

n August, earthmoving equipment initiated the first phase of creating a new vibrant center for the Town of Fishers. Located at the northwest corner of 116th Street and Municipal Drive, the Flaherty & Collins project will become the town’s first public-private partnership downtown project. Community planners have long envisioned creating a downtown destination for the residents of Fishers. “We’re entering an interesting time in Fishers. The way we’re growing is changing because we can’t grow outward as much. We need to start growing in a way that has connectivity and adds walkability to our downtown,” said Rachel Johnson, assistant director of planning for the Fishers Department of Community Development. Redeveloping the downtown area of Fishers will help to create jobs and provide sustainable growth as the town becomes a city. The cost for the first phase of a multi-tiered, long-term plan is $34 million and will be shared by the Town of Fishers and Flaherty & Collins Properties. The 26

Town will contribute approximately $10.75 million from bond proceeds, and the remaining developer investment is estimated at $26.65 million. “Overwhelmingly we’ve heard from citizens that they want more pedestrian access and want to drive less, and our plans make that happen,” said Johnson. Across the country, developers are moving toward this type of development plan. Johnson watches the first phase happen from her window at Town Hall. Over three acres of green space is being transformed into an area of retail, restaurants and residential living space. A town-owned parking garage will be the first structure to be completed and will help to provide 140 spaces of free public parking. The apartment units will wrap around the garage to keep it mostly hidden from view on 116th Street. Named The Depot at Nickel Plate, the plans for the complex show 240 one and two-bedroom residential units and 16,000 square feet of leasable retail space. The upscale interior finishes for the apartments include 9-foot ceilings, granite countertops in the kitchen and bath area, wood flooring and

stainless steel appliances. Residential amenities feature a secured lobby, a fitness club and a media and gaming lounge to name a few. The aesthetic façade of the structure will include pedestrian friendly streetscapes.

Tom Dickey (left) and Scott Fadness (right) overseeing the downtown Fishers new development.

“On these three acres, we’re creating so much activity on space that wasn’t being utilized. If you were to do this in a typical suburban development pattern with a surface parking lot, it would take a far greater number of acres to achieve these results,” Johnson said. The development has its own zoning code called the Nickel Plate District code. Having a zoning code in place will create an architectural standard guideline for maintaining the desired aesthetic quality for the new additions including the height of buildings. “We want to achieve a certain amount of interest at street level. People don’t want to walk by a continuous brick wall,” added Johnson. Unlike traditional zoning codes, the Nickel Plate District code offers more flexibility for property owners and tenants. “We want to represent our identity, and we’re open to variety, but we’ve set the baseline for quality architecture,” said Johnson. Communities want a downtown destination with usable outdoor space. “We want families to go downtown, park their cars and figure out what to do, whether it’s dining, going to the farmer’s market or going to a concert at the ampitheater,” said Johnson, citing the success of the concert series as proof. Developing by adding density is occurring all over the country as well as in other Hamilton County cities. Suggestions that Fishers is trying to compete with Carmel are untrue. “Carmel has been a great community for us to look at. We have been able to use guidance from Carmel planners, but we are not trying to copy Carmel. Fishers is its own distinct community,” Johnson said. The Nickel Plate District downtown redevelopment project is part of the larger long-term 2011 Town Center Plan that includes developing four other districts: the Northeast Technology District, the Civic District, the Village District, and the Prairie District. Each district will have its own architectural guidelines. The 2011 plan establishes a framework for future growth in Fishers. “We want community members to attend public meetings and provide input,” said Johnson. “Tell us what you want your Fishers to be.”

Black & T

he Hamilton Southeastern High School Royals Varsity Club (RVC) is replacing its annual spring fundraising Gala with a new Black & Blue Bash in November. The Black & Blue Bash will be the RVC’s main event this school year and will be a more casual gathering than the Gala with lots of time for socializing.

There will still be auction items but in a limited number with more geared toward adult outings and activities. Co-Athletic Director Jim Self will continue his popular position as auctioneer, reminding attendees (and bidders) that it is “for the kids!”

Saturday, November 9 at 6 pm at the Hilton Indianapolis North, 8181 N. Shadeland Ave., and will also feature a brief keynote speaker, dinner and DJ.

Auction items will include a Colorado time share, senior picture photo session, Geist pontoon party package, hotel getaways, electronics and much more.

“We hope the new, late fall date will allow more Royal supporters to attend as our spring date became overwhelmed by student athletic events,” said RVC President Tina Mudd. “We are also trying a less formal event this year in response to some RVC member suggestions.”

Blue Bash ‘13 or parent of an HSE High School student to attend. “This is a great opportunity for fun, fellowship and fundraising benefiting the HSE High School athletic programs,” said Event Chair Carol McCormack. “We have had wonderful success with our past Gala events where monies raised helped equip the new HSE weight room, purchased greatly-needed cardio equipment that is especially helpful in rehabbing injured athletes and allowed us to give $500 to each of the 23 sports at HSE High School,” said Co-Athletic Director Greg Habegger. Black & Blue Bash reservations can be made at RoyalsVarsityClub.org. Single tickets are $75, and tables of 10 are $1,000 per table and include special perks. The reservation deadline is November 1. Corporate and personal sponsorships for the event are also available. For details, contact Carol McCormack at carolmack@comcast. net or 317-841-0740. The RVC is a group of parents, community members, athletes, coaches, faculty, staff and alumni dedicated to the support, encouragement and advancement of the athletic programs at HSE High School. RVC directly assists HSE athletes, coaches and booster clubs. Everyone is invited to become a member of the RVC. You do not need to have an HSE athlete or even be an HSE High School family to join. Annual memberships have a variety of levels with which to participate. RVC membership forms can also be found at RoyalsVarsityClub.org.

A Lifesaving Friend | Whitney Mucha

L

ori Whitaker Lord is a Fishers hairstylist by trade and a modern hero by action. In high school, Lori met Amy Wilson and so was the beginning of a lifelong friendship that has become so much more special than anyone could have imagined back in ninth grade. Lori and Amy have been through many milestones together, including being pregnant at the same time and watching their sons grow up together. Amy’s second son, Ethan, would even enjoy vacations with Lori’s family over the years. The families have become trusted friends and have supported each other through the ups and downs of life. In spring 2011, Ethan entered his first professional season for the Chicago White Sox. Team doctors performed tests to investigate ankle pain and discovered that Ethan was in kidney failure. His dream of playing in Major League Baseball was temporarily put on hold to focus on his need for a kidney transplant. The next 2½ years was an emotional rollercoaster filled with doctors’ appointments, insurance approvals and waiting to be added to the deceased donor list. Ethan’s transplant nephrologist suggested taking steps to find a live donor match since the deceased donor list could be a five year wait. Unlike some patients, Ethan was healthy otherwise with no other medical issues that would move him up the list. His left kidney was completely shut down, and his right kidney was only working at about 18 percent. Family and friends rallied around Ethan. Many got tested to be a match, but one by one, they were knocked out for various reasons. A friend was a perfect match, but after further investigation, Ethan discovered he wasn’t financially prepared for the transplant. “I wasn’t aware that I had to have so much money prior to my transplant in order to ensure funding for expensive postoperative medication,” he shared.

Again friends and family rallied around Ethan. Local musician Corey Cox (coreycoxmusic.com) played at a fundraiser for Ethan in the fall of 2012. Corey’s dedicated fans and Ethan’s support system came out in full force to raise money for Ethan’s medication. Unfortunately, once funds were finally in hand, the original perfect match had many life changes that didn’t allow for the time off needed to recover after donating a kidney. “I didn’t worry. I let my support system worry for me," Ethan said upon reflecting over the last year. "I just tried to stay even and control what I could control. I told my mom I didn’t want to know if anyone else was getting tested until there was a perfect match.” Lori Whitaker Lord and Ethan Wilson share a hug before going into surgery october 2013

During this time, Lori watched as one by one people were matching but then not passing all the necessary tests to become a donor for Ethan. Lori shared, “I’ve known Ethan since the day he was born, and I wanted to help. I decided to get tested after I found out yet another person failed the tests.” Lori’s first step was a phone interview after which 17 vials of blood were drawn for many qualifying tests. Two weeks later, Lori received a phone call saying she was compatible to Ethan. A long list of tests were then scheduled to further qualify Lori as a donor. She met with donor advocates and psychologists and prayed about her decision. Then one day, she got the call that she was a perfect match. “I was so surprised that I was that healthy and had passed the tests, but I already knew in my heart it was going to work. From the time they told me I was compatible, I knew I would be the one to give Ethan a kidney,” she shared. One month later, Lori and Ethan went into surgery to give and receive the gift of life. Both are now recovering and looking forward to getting back to their normal lives. Merriam-Webster defines hero as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” The Wilson family defines hero as Lori Whitaker Lord. Ethan said, “I have been so humbled by this whole experience and am so unbelievably thankful for the support I’ve received from my family, friends and surrounding community. I can’t say enough about Lori. She just left from visiting me! I think she is the most selfless person to give her kidney to help save my life.” Lori doesn’t see herself as a hero. “Ethan will always be a part of my life. He has a very special place in my heart. I didn’t do this to be a hero; I did it to save his life.”

the testing or surgery, she did need to take four weeks off work to recover. Clients of Lori’s at Salon Krelic, 8912 E. 96th St. in Fishers, are excited for her return. Friends set up a PayPal account for Lori to accept donations to cover costs while she’s away from work. If you would like to donate to Lori, you can find her account at filazafer.wix.com/ loriwhitakerlord. You can also schedule a hair appointment with Lori at 317-845-9955. Ethan’s goal is to get back to the major leagues but knows that getting healthy is his number one priority. He shared, “I encourage everyone to go to the doctor for a regular physical and blood work. Like me, many people have kidney failure and don’t even know it.” Ethan will continue to have expensive medications to maintain his new kidney. Donations are accepted at the First Merchants Bank Heritage Branch, Attention: ETHAN K WILSON FUND, 3055 W US 36, Pendleton, IN 46064. According to the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization, there are over 117,000 people on the waitlist in the US. Sadly, on average, 18 people die each day waiting for their perfect match. Though living donors can give some organs or portions of organs and tissues to those waiting, sometimes only a deceased daonor can save a life. More than 3.4 million Hoosiers have registered their decision to be an organ and tissue donor. Have you? To register, go to donatelifeindiana.org/register. To learn more about organ donation, visit iopo.org. Whitney Mucha is a graduate of Indiana University, a native Hoosier and HR professional. She and her husband, Mike, enjoy living in Fishers with their two sons, Charlie and Max.

TAKING ACTION Bullying in Our Schools | Laurie Quinn & Neeta Pulliman Have you ever been concerned your child was a victim of bullying? Bullying is a major issue for today’s youth, but the term “bully” is difficult to define. According to the stopbullying.gov website, “Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated or has the potential to be repeated over time.” Perhaps the reason the term is so difficult to define is the fact that bullies come in all shapes and sizes and bully in a variety of ways.

There are at least three types of bullying prevalent today: 1. Physical bullying: using force or action to demean someone (e.g., hitting, kicking, pushing, stealing) 2. Verbal bullying: using words to demean someone (e.g., name calling, teasing, insulting) 3. Cyberbullying: using technology to demean someone (e.g., bullying through texting, email, Facebook) Today children are not only bullied in school or on the playground, many are also bullied at home through various technological outlets. As bullying becomes increasingly more pervasive through technology, the harmful effects seem magnified. Almost weekly, the news highlights a story of a child withdrawing from school and family, seeking counseling, and in extreme cases, taking his/her own life as the result of being bullied. Oftentimes, the parents of these children were unaware their child was a victim of bullying. To avoid finding yourself in a similar position, be mindful of the following signs that your child is being bullied: unexplained injuries, loss of or destruction of clothing or personal belongings, frequent illnesses, changes in eating habits, difficulty sleeping, loss of interest in school, decreased self-esteem and/or self-destructive behaviors, such as running away or talking about harming themselves.

If you recognize a bullying situation, take action immediately. First, talk with your child; let them know you are there to support them and that it is not his/her fault. Then address the bullying behavior and take the necessary steps to resolve the situation, from developing a plan to deal with the bully to getting your child additional support if necessary. It is important to be aware that bullying affects everyone involved, including the bully, victim and bystanders. The staff at Fall Creek Elementary takes a proactive approach. “We teach our students to treat each other with kindness and respect," says Principal Amy Jackson. "We teach them to look for the good in others and to value each other’s differences.” “Students also know that it is a powerful thing to speak out. Students can use their words to stand up for themselves and to tell a teacher or other adult at school in order to help them or others stay safe.” Together we can all make a difference by taking the time to watch and listen to our children and taking action. For more information on bullying, visit stopbullying.gov. Neeta Pulliam is Owner/Operator of Pro Martial Arts in Fishers which offers the Armor Program focusing on anti-bullying and predator prevention training.

LOCAL BUSINESSES

ROCKSTONE PIZZA PUB . 11501 Allisonville Rd. Fishers . 317-288-9761 . info@rockstonepizzapub.com

You Have to Try It! Review | Clark A. Edwards

F

or years, Ed Sahm has been one of the lone bastions of local quality food. Well, he is at it again! Through a partnership with Ryan Bucksot, they have opened Rockstone Pizza Pub at 11501 Allisonville Rd. next to Sahm’s Restaurant. In full disclosure, I have been a fan of Ed Sahm for many years and frequented the old Flying Horse Pub when it was as big as my current closet. For many years, my wife and I have enjoyed steaks “Pittsburghstyle” and the breaded cauliflower. In fact, Sahm’s catered our wedding reception at River Glen Country Club back in 1996. In addition, Ed has been a major supporter of the Megan S. Ott Foundation, so I am always eager to support his businesses.

My family and I arrived early on a Saturday, so we could beat the rush and catch Ryan with time to talk. Upon meeting Ryan, Managing Partner/ General Manager of Rockstone Pizza Pub, I immediately saw that Ryan gets it; he wants to provide a quality local experience. Rockstone sources meats from Chris Ely and Smoking Goose. They also bring in local Amish chickens which ”never touch the freezer” as Ryan put it. If you are a craft beer fan, you will be very happy with the selection at Rockstone. They have 24 craft beers on tap that they display on a fantastic stainless steel backdrop that has a unique grinded artistic patina to it. In addition, they have a cooler full of many unusual bottles of beer and high end saké. Yes, I said saké, and yes, it is in the cooler. Ryan tells me that saké is produced exactly like beer, and the good quality ones are chilled, not served warm or hot. If you prefer wine, there are many great options for wine, not just the requisite red and white. From delicious appetizers and a fantastic meal followed by dessert, the Pizza A Smore’ (the house pizza crust with graham cracker crumbs, Nutella, chocolate and marshmallows), this place has it all! We selected our pizza and had them cook it wood-fired

40

fishers C O M M U N I T Y

style. You see, while most pizza places have either a traditional chain driven pizza oven or a wood-fired oven, Rockstone’s philosophy is “Why not offer both?” So you have your choice of oven and crust style. By the way, all of the crust is made in house each day. The wood for the wood-fired oven is locally sourced hardwoods. In a world right now of $10 pizzas that taste like the box they come in, this classic trio is true pizza like it is supposed to be. In fact, Ryan had a couple of East Coast transplants in recently who told him they no longer need to go back to the East Coast to get good pizza. Rockstone’s atmosphere is conducive to both families with children and for adults who want to be an adult for the next big game on television. Not only are the owners of this establishment supporting local businesses by using local businesses,

but they are also giving back to the community with their kind hearts. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The owners of Rockstone Pizza Pub help make a difference when it comes to this disease. They have touched the hearts of my friends by supporting organizations like the Megan S. Ott Foundation* which makes me want to support them. Together as the Fishers community, we can make a difference for those battling this disease and their families. Clark A. Edwards is National Portfolio Manager for TransFirst, LLC. He was born and raised in Irvington and is a graduate of Indiana University. He is a 20 year resident of Fishers where he resides wih his wife and two young sons. He can be reached at clark.edwards@sbcglobal.net.

* The Megan S. Ott Foundation was started in March 2010 when Megan Ott realized the difficult emotional and physical anguish of fighting breast cancer that the disease placed upon not only the women fighting breast cancer but to the families as well. Megan envisioned an organization that would help families cope. Megan and Tom Ott founded the Megan S. Ott Foundation one month before Megan passed away.

While a certain segment of the population can immediately identify with those words as the negotiating tactic of a “beloved” enemy within the world of science fiction, they will soon become an all too familiar feeling to many more of us when faced with certain demands placed upon us by our children. I’m referring, of course, to the planned launches of both the PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One next month. If you’re anything like me, at least one of your children has already been dropping not-so-subtle hints regarding what a wreck their life will become should they fail to be one of the very first to own the latest gaming platform/home entertainment/do everything boxes from Sony and Microsoft. So while you try to tune out the tiny voices clamoring for either (or both) of these, let’s take a quick look at them and see if we can help narrow down the buying decision. First, the numerically-challenged Xbox One (seriously, how do you go from “Xbox” to “360” to “One”? Shouldn’t we be at 720 right now?) is Microsoft’s attempt to fully occupy your living room. Physically and functionally designed to replace your cable box first and be a next generation gaming platform second, the Xbox One (X1) will launch with a new version of the Kinect included in the box. This “next gen” Kinect features a full HD camera as well as infrared sensors and updated microphones to allow for tracking in low light conditions as well as improved sensitivity for voice control. The X1 is quite literally designed to replace your cable box as it features coax input on the back to allow for a direct linein of your provider’s feed. The intent here is to process the TV content directly and make the X1 the front-end for both navigating and consuming the content, also connecting to your home network via Wifi for more standard online activity. Direct integration of the TV signals is designed to allow you to watch TV or games in one section of the screen, conduct a Skype video call in another area (some might even call that area a “window”) and give you the ability to control activity on screen with either voice or gestures. The lack of backwards compatibility with the current Xbox 360 library may be disappointing but does not stand apart from the PS4 and follows the precedent set when the current generation of consoles launched. While Microsoft has not given a specific date for the X1, we know it is coming in November and will carry with it a rather hefty $499 price tag.

Slotting in exactly $100 cheaper (with a firm launch date of November 15), we have the next entry into the venerable PlayStation line, the PS4. Where Microsoft focused first on being a media center with gaming simply being part of the overall value proposition, Sony did the opposite. Designed from the core to be a gaming platform first, the PS4 features slightly more powerful internals than the X1 but will not ship with a motion controller in the box – one of the primary reasons for the price difference between the platforms. However, while gaming is the focus, the PS4 (like the XB1) will not be backwards-compatible with the existing suite of PS3 games. This means the copies of Madden and FIFA that you just bought are not going to run on the shiny new box, though EA will happily accept your money for “next gen” versions of both. Sony is, however, pushing the envelope when it comes to how you get your games – integration with the recently acquired Gaikai cloud gaming platform will allow for games to be streamed to the device rather than physically purchased (in much the same way the Steam operates on a PC) while the traditional DualShock controllers will now feature a touchpad in addition to the familiar controls that have been a part of every PlayStation. Which is better? That certainly remains to be seen and will likely be largely a matter of personal preference. While one may focus on entertainment over gaming and the other vice versa, you can be sure that developers for both machines will push the limits of what the hardware can do in order to give up, give in and shell out the green for either one. Resistance is futile, indeed. Sean Mulroy has worked in the technology industry even longer than the 8 years he and his family have lived in Fishers.

The Cheer Guild Teams up with American Girl

®

| Laurie Quinn The Cheer Guild of Riley Hospital for Children and IU Health University Hospital have been “helping to create smiles since 1924,” says Stacey Craig, board member and Fishers resident. Stacey and her husband, Darren, got involved with this organization in 2007 because they learned firsthand how a hospital experience can be made better and less stressful when Stacey was hospitalized while pregnant with their son. “I can only imagine how children feel when they are going through a hospital stay. When we heard about The Cheer Guild, we immediately knew that this was a place for us,” she says. The Cheer Guild has helped many families all over the Indianapolis area including many Fishers children. One Fishers resident couldn’t say enough wonderful things about this organization. Cynthia Lyon and her son, Parker, were recipients after Parker had heart surgery. Cynthia says, “The Cheer Guild is an amazing organization of kind and compassionate volunteers who go out of their way to make sure that each patient at Riley feels special and loved. After our six month old, Parker, had heart surgery last December, Santa and the other volunteers made their rounds through the Cardiovascular ICU with presents for each child. They not only brought a gift for our sweet little boy, but also for our other two children. It meant the world to my 44

husband and me and helped to ease some of the sadness and anxiety our daughter and son had been feeling.” The Cheer Guild’s biggest project is the Toy Room located at Riley Hospital. Volunteers ensure the donated new toys and handmade items are safe to give as gifts to the children who are patients at Riley. Over 14,000 items are given as gifts each month! This year, The Cheer Guild has teamed up with American Girl® for a fun program that showcases historical and contemporary fashions for girls and their dolls. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Cheer Guild Toy Room at Riley. This event is Saturday, November 9 at 1 pm and 5:30 pm and Sunday, November 10 at 1 pm. It will be held at Primo South, 2615 E. National Ave. in Indianapolis. The cost is $25 per person or $40 per girl for the intermission runway experience. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Heather Dawes, Director of The Cheer Guild, at hdawes@ iuhealth.org or by calling 317-948-3584 or 317-402-5636. For more information on The Cheer Guild, visit cheerguild.org or on Facebook at /CheerGuild. Laurie Quinn is the publisher of Fishers Community Newsletter. She enjoys being outside whenever possible whether it is biking, hiking or pushing her kids on the swings.
