n 2013 Indiana passed the “Direct Access” bill which allows Hoosiers to see a physical therapist without a doctor referral or prescription.

Enter Athletico Physical Therapy, a full service physical therapy center who has received many distinguished accolades over the last several years including “2013 Top Workplace in Chicago” and “2012 Physical Therapy Practice of the Year” by Advance PT Magazine. In September, Fishers East became Athletico’s fourth Indiana location and the second in the greater Indianapolis area.

The amount of change in their functional status is compared to risk-adjusted national predictions from FOTO, and provides a measure of treatment effectiveness.

While most in the health care industry say that they are committed to quality care and services, few are willing to actually put their resources into measuring patients outcomes and satisfaction and responding to that data.

Aside from witnessing lots of growth within the building and the increasing size of the student body, the HSE Drama Club has remained efficient through the years.

Her classroom is like a theatre museum of classic props and posters, with visual distractions that stimulate the imagination every where your eye is drawn. My favorite article of decor is a giant rabbit topiary that sits in the corner from the production of THE SECRET GARDEN.

With a strong tradition of maintaining a program independent of budget cuts apart from the lighting bill and auditorium maintenance, the HSE Drama Club has been able to continue running along smoothly with minimal fees and few fundraisers.

Santa’s Mailbox AVAILABLE FOR YOUNG FISHERS RESIDENTS Young Fishers residents can make sure Santa gets their Christmas lists this year, but there are no guarantees about making the nice list.

Fourth graders or younger can drop off their lists to Santa’s mailbox inside Town Hall and Fishers Parks and Recreation office. The mailboxes can be accessed during business hours.

ou may have heard her name from volunteering at your child’s school for some committee or helping out with the Geist Half & 5K. For anyone whom has already met her, there can be no denying that Aprill Rogers-Shelburne is quite unforgettable.

She is friendly, energetic, bubbly, upbeat, intelligent and feisty in her approach to getting a job well done. She stays incredibly focused to succeed on any project with which she is assigned. Due to her diligent work ethic and astonishing results along the way, she has been asked to serve as the new Executive Director of Geist Half & 5K. “I am honored that the board believes in my abilities and has chosen me to be the Executive Director,” says Shelburne, who

started her new role on October 1.

She is also the school director and volunteer coordinator for the Geist Half & 5K. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Shelburne has found Fishers to be her home for 20 years. Shelburne fulfilled her first leadership role for the Hamilton Southeastern PTO when her children were in elementary school and has continued to support the school corporation throughout the years. She was the President of the Fishers High School PTO during its formative years, establishing events such as Annual Chili Dinner, Give Back Program, Fashion Show and several others.

Leaving solid financials and traditions in place at the new high school, Shelburne was asked to join the Hamilton Southeastern Foundation Board where she had great success as chairperson of the Inaugural Mudsock event and the Corporate Dinner. At the end of her service, she was recruited to work with HSSF’s largest single donor, the Geist Half Marathon, Inc. “I first met Aprill when we worked together on the Hamilton Southeastern Foundation Board,” said Matt Troyer, president of the Geist Half & 5K. “I was very impressed with her ability to turn the Foundation’s vision for a VIP event into a reality in very short order.

That led me to ask her to get involved with the Geist Half. She quickly analyzed the difficulties we were having with various facets of our school program, then created and implemented steps to improve the experience for everyone. She has been a tireless leader within the Geist Half ever since.”

COMMUNICATION IS KEY WITH PLAN TO EXPAND GEIST 5K

When Shelburne started helping with the Geist Half & 5K, she recognized the need for communication enhancement. At that time, only seven of the 20 schools in the HSE district were participating in the events. In a short time she increased the participation among school age children by nearly 60 percent. For example, there were

1,083 students participating in the Geist 5K when she first started in 2010. One year later, student enrollment increased to 1,438. By her third year, the number of students participating increased to 1,695.

When asked how she was able to increase participation, she said it was constant communication among all levels. First, Shelburne visited the superintendents of both the Lawrence and HSE school systems to stress the importance of supporting the Geist Half & 5K since 100 percent of the proceeds of this event go right back to the schools. Incidentally, as of last year, the marathon has donated a total of $300,000 over the last six years, giving $150,000 to each of the school systems. In essence, she wanted to create a trickle-down effect, encouraging better communication and support starting from the top.

Second, Shelburne felt the need to speak up about better support for all volunteers of the Geist Half & 5K. As a result, she spoke to the Board of Directors about exploring new ways of making them feel extra special.

“I wanted the volunteers to know how much we value their work and dedication,” she said. “I wanted to make sure to show that

appreciation beyond giving them a free T-shirt.”

And her work for the runners and volunteers hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“Aprill is passionate about helping the Geist Half achieve its mission of promoting health and wellness for the Fishers-Geist area and making this a top tier event for not only the runners but the hundreds of volunteers we need to make it happen,” said David Ayars, Geist Half Marathon board member. “The Geist Half is a great event for this area and would not be possible without resident and volunteer support…and Aprill absolutely gets that.”

In her new role as Executive Director, Shelburne will still continue to be the volunteer coordinator and school director.

“Currently, I’m working with a Chicago-based race team that can help us expand as we grow,” said Shelburne. “They are assisting us with hosting this event with things like logistics, expo, start/finish line and safety … As our numbers continue to grow in the 5K, this event has the potential to be one of the largest 5Ks in Indiana.”

As the Executive Director, Shelburne serves as the communication link between race directors, marketing directors and the Geist Half Marathon Board of Directors.

Geist Half & 5K has a mission to help promote health and fitness in youth and therefore encourages area schools and youth organizations to develop their own training program by combining a group of kids and adult mentors who would like to participate in either the 5K (more appropriate for the younger and novice runner) or the half marathon (for the older more experienced runner). Although promotion of the training program, registration for the race and race day management is the responsibility of the school, Geist Half & 5K offers guidance and resources to assist with these processes, as well as a training program coordinator to support the school every step of the way.

Advertisers will be able to target a combined 70,000 homeowners through direct mailed magazines each month. A mobile app called the Townies Super Local App will accompany the print publications with mobile couponing features.

“This will be a unique offering for retailers and home services companies that use coupons to attract new and repeat business,” said Tom Britt, publisher of the TownePost Network. “Users will be able to present their print coupons or redeem the offers via our mobile app that allows advertisers to have real-time, onsite coupons.”

Through the mobile app, users can “check-in” and see what offers are available to them based on their GPS location.

Likewise advertisers can determine which coupons are available to users based on the day of the week, time of day, and whether or not coupons can have multiple redemptions. All app activity is then reported back to the retailers monthly to help fine tune coupon offerings and messaging.

“Redeeming coupons on a mobile phone is old news. Our app goes a step further by enticing locals to socialize their experience by sharing their check-ins through their Twitter and Facebook posts,” added Britt.

At 9 a.m. on Tanksgiving morning before helping themselves to their Tanksgiving meal, 18,000 Hoosiers and their families will serve others frst by participating in the 12th annual Drumstick Dash.

When Chief Development Ofcer Steve Kerr proposed the idea over 12 years ago to hold a race on Tanksgiving Day, he had no idea it would grow to be so popular. Te Drumstick Dash is the second largest in the state, second only to the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon.

Tis race, benefting Wheeler Mission, has grown into one of the top 10 events in the U.S. for Tanksgiving Day running events.

Te most important part of the Drumstick Dash is raising awareness of the services and support that Wheeler Mission provides.

CIRCLE OF LIGHTS® A DOWNTOWN TRADITION

Magic and excitement will again permeate the air around Monument Circle, during one of Central Indiana’s most treasured holiday traditions, the Circle of Lights.

Presented by Quality Connection and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) #481, the 52nd Circle of Lights will kick of the holiday season, starting at 6 p.m. Friday, November 28, with a free family-oriented celebration.

From the Friday evening afer Tanksgiving until early January, millions of spectators will take in the brilliant displays around Monument Circle.

In the middle stands the centerpiece, a 284 foot Christmas tree, standing lit as a symbol of peace and brotherhood. Every year I have stood in awe of that, and I have prayed a prayer of thanks for the teams of individuals who have contributed their time to give such joy. I’d like to tell you what just a small percentage of individuals have done behind the scenes for the Circle of Lights.

Decorations on the Monument have been a holiday tradition since 1945. World War II

had just ended, and Christmas was nearing.

Indianapolis architect Edward D. Pierre envisioned the Monument lit up in lights and decorations, standing as a symbol of peace and brotherhood. For the next 17 years, Christmas trees, giant candles and small toy maker shops brightened the Circle’s base, while elegant banners with phrases such as “Peace on Earth Good Will, Toward Men” clung to the Monument’s botom section.

It wasn’t until 1962 Pierre’s vision of lights strung from the top of the Monument to its base became a reality. As I have mentioned, many people and organizations have played a role in designing, fabricating, installing and implementing the celebration décor.

Initially, a group called the Indianapolis Christmas Commitee, or the Indianapolis Holidays Commitee, started the mission of what today is called the Circle of Lights.

Tis mission today is the responsibility of Downtown Indy, Inc. Te union electricians of IBEW #481 have always been the organization to install and remove the décor. Two hundred of these volunteer electricians utilize more than six miles of electrical wire, 52 garland strands and 4,784 lights to produce Indiana’s

holiday centerpiece.

In a chat with Julia Saltsgaver, Quality Connection Executive Director, she told me the electricians work one strand at a time hoisting up the most northern strand frst.

Ten the most southern strand goes next.

Te project continues with this north-tosouth rotation going in a counter-clockwise direction until completed. By handling the strands in this manner, great care is taken to protect the structure and integrity of the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in the transformation process.

“Te contractors of Quality Connection and the IBEW #481 electrical workers are thrilled to provide their talent and skill to make sure that the Circle of Lights brings holiday joy for everyone,” Saltsgaver said.

Te free celebration festivities start at 6 p.m. with the televised portion of the program running from 7-8 p.m. Te Monument lightup will occur at approximately 7:50 p.m.

Te celebration incorporates local acts from dancers to choral groups, to singers and musicians, all of whom were selected back in early October from a panel of judges in a format similar to the American Idol auditions.

For the third year in a row, the nine member band from Mount Pleasant Christian Church, led by Brian Tabor, has been selected as the house band. Based out of Greenwood, the group will rock the night away with Christmas tunes in a variety of styles, including R&B, pop and classic rock.

“Yes,” she said, smiling. “We are also excited to have Indy’s own Josh Kaufman, 2014 winner of Te Voice, to headline the Circle of Lights. Additionally, professional performers appearing at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s IPL Yuletide Celebration will take the stage. It’s going to be a spectacular show!”

“We are honored to serve as the house band for Circle of Lights again this year.

Our team is hard at work, preparing music that will help us ring in the season of Christmas,” said Tabor. “We are thrilled to be a part of such a special event in the life of our city. It has become one of the highlights of our year. If you have never been to the Circle of Lights, I encourage you to check it out. It is an unbelievable experience.”

A lucky child each year is selected from a coloring contest to help “fip the switch” with Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard.

Nearing 7:50 p.m., the spectator’s anticipation builds. “What’s that sound?” a litle boy screams from the crowd.

Siting down with Jennifer Hanson, Downtown Indy Senior Communication Director, I asked if the rumors were true.

“Ho, ho, ho!”

And as the child, Santa and the Mayor fip the switch, I’m sure I’ll hear Santa saying, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

“Doing something that’s never been done before and geting people to understand and wrap their minds around it [was a challenge],” Springer said. “For example, it was difcult to fnd a manufacturer for the dispenser or cups, so we decided to just do it ourselves.”

Botoms Up dispensers have found residence in 49 states (except stubborn Rhode Island), Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Scandinavia, Germany, Norway and soon the UK. Growth is in the future for GrinOn Industries, according to Springer. Tey are also working on producing reusable glassware and pitchers for their systems and expanding their home units (yes, you can have a system in your basement!) and commercial sales. Tey are currently in a fundraising stage and looking for accredited investors.

CHAMBER EVENT GIVES TASTE OF FISHERS

Fishers Chamber of Commerce hosted its second annual Fishers Business Expo and Food FORUM event that allowed its members and the public to get a taste of what Fishers businesses have to offer.

At the FORUM Conference Center on Oct. 15, the focus was on the food industry, but that didn’t mean dozens of other businesses weren’t there to talk about what they have to offer. St. Vincent’s Hospital was there sampling some of their menu items and discussing their new sports performance and injury check clinic on Saturday mornings.

Restaurants and catering companies had samples of their dishes, and many used the opportunity to reach out to customers.

“We’re focusing on younging up our clientele.

We are redoing our bar menu; this is going to be one of our focuses along with tap beer,” said Peterson’s General Manager Kendra Travez.

Mama Bear’s at Geist used the forum to launch their new catering menu, which will feature more than just breakfast.

Some smaller companies used the event to let the community know what they offer, like catering company Small Potatoes, which started in August.

Amy von Eiff, owner of A Cut Above Catering Company, was at the event with samples and telling the public about instructional cooking classes that are now offered in their new Carmel location.

Vocational Adult Learning (VOC.AL) is a program that helps transition students with disabilities to life after high school.

Transition specialist Chrissy Pogue reached out to Fall Creek Township with a proposal that Trustee Jeff Hern couldn’t refuse.

For now, these FHS and HSE students meet three times a week in the community room at the Fall Creek Township building for curriculum that lasts about an hour.

Afterwards, they head over to the food pantry with a job coach to organize it and stock shelves.

These students wanted to work in the Fall Creek Township food pantry. “Our partnership with this group of students is a win-win,” Hern said. “These students have the opportunity to gain employable skills through their work in our food pantry that will allow them to become more selfefficient. In turn, it’s a great help for us in keeping the pantry organized and stocked to

“We are always looking for jobs in the community, be it paid or volunteer,” Pogue said.

“My husband was a computer engineer and head of IT for his company,” she said. “He had the ability to write a program and get us set up so that we could track the families and people that we served from year-to-year.

We had 397 people the first year and last year we had 22,978 families in Hamilton County. This year, we are anticipating over 26,000 people that we will have served.”

What do these families need?

A

s a very young girl, Nancy (Mason) Chance had an innate passion to serve others. While growing up in Noblesville, she would watch from the picture window pane of her grandfather’s cabinet shop on the corner of Logan Street where the judicial building sits now. From there she would watch the people board and unload from the trains that would stop frequently throughout the day.

“I asked my grandfather where the people were going once they got off of the train,” Chance said. “He told me that they were going to sit under the bridge and wait until their next train came to take them to wherever they were going to. Then I asked what they were going to eat, and he replied, ‘Nothing, if you can’t think of it. You’ve got to think of it.’”

Chance did just that. She recruited the help of her grandmother and together they made up several little sandwiches in which Chance, along with one of her grandparents, took to the workers under the bridge and fed them while they waited.

“I took a linen napkin over and did that for two years until I started school at age 4,” she said. “I still remember the stories and the

pictures that the workers shared with me of their families. I’ve had a passion for people ever since.”

Today, Chance is the Holiday Coordinator, Founder and Executive Director of the Good Samaritan Network GSN of Hamilton County, Inc. “It all started back in 1980. I was working with the Carmel and Noblesville Fire Departments and with the Department of Family and Child Services,” she explained.

“I worked a lot with child abuse and was one of the specially trained people that they would have to go out to talk and educate the public, law enforcement, etc. about the issues.

“So all of those of guys knew who I was and about some of the work that I was doing.

When I shared my concerns with the local departments, they asked me to get involved with the holiday initiatives because they needed better planning and oversight. There was no balancing beam.”

Chance selflessly took on the county holiday project and named it “Good Samaritan,” but it was very much in its infant stages of development. She didn’t have a 501(c)3 or a board. She and her volunteers were just trying to solve problems and move everybody in the same circle so that nobody was duplicating services.

“The families need food,” Chance said.

“They are food insecure. If you look at the statistics of food insecure families that are in our county, per last year’s numbers, approximately 25,890 people are accessing food pantries and 10,978 of these were kids.

What we are seeing are middle class families in Hamilton County that would otherwise fall through the cracks if we didn’t have the network. Luckily, we do. While working on the holiday project in 1995, I got the vision that our county was getting bigger, and it continues to grow expeditiously. I could see this burst, and I thought we are going to become one of the big cities where nobody knows what anybody else is doing to help unless we do something to coordinate them.”

Chance took the 20 agencies, nine pantries and nine township trustees and formed a committee. For over a year, they hammered out how they were going to process people in need in Hamilton County.

“In March of ’95, we rolled out the Good Samaritan Network,” she said. “Today we have 262 agencies which include agencies from Indianapolis and surrounding counties that offer services like mental health services, and have a presence in Hamilton County. It’s important to have all of pieces of the puzzle when you have this many people in the county at risk so that you can help a family extensively and keep them from falling into first generation poverty.”

Due the economic downturn that began in 2007, many people have not been able to find another job to replace the one that they had for 20 to 30 years. Chance and her staff have seen an increase of middle class families come in for services.

THE FHS MARCHING TIGER BAND DRUMLINE

Percussion provides the heartbeat of any band, and the battery (commonly referred to as the “drumline”) of the Fishers High School Marching Tiger Band is no exception.

It takes time, energy and countless hours of preparation to do what they do. The Tiger Band is an award-winning team made up of 190 musicians, comprised of mostly honor students who march and perform for the love of music. The camaraderie of this group of musically-talented students dedicate countless hours to their craft.

Of the 190 marching band members, 41 comprise the percussion section, 19 are in the front ensemble (known affectionately as “the pit”) and the drumline, who marches, has 22 members. And of the 22, three are girls.

Other drums that are played in marching percussion are tenor drums, which is a grouping of five differently pitched drums that weighs about 50 pounds, and bass drums, the deepest pitched of the drums.

In the past, Baldwin has played marimba and vibraphone with the pit.

Baldwin, who is in the top 25 of the senior class, is going for the AP/honors diploma and plans to continue her music in college next year as well as pursue a major in chemistry or engineering.

“Being in drumline has changed my life. I have met some of the greatest people I have ever known, and the activity continues to be a positive outlet for me,” said Baldwin.

Her only regret is that she didn’t join sooner.

Senior snare drummer Molly Baldwin was drawn to drumline because she saw how much fun they were having.

“I cherish the time spent with marching band, and being with my bandmates is like being with family – it will never be enough," she said.

“You could tell they were putting their whole heart into every performance,” said Baldwin. “I knew that I wanted to be a part of that.”

The feeling of the band being a family is shared by sophomores Alaina Gabbard and Sami Marcotte.

So after playing soccer her freshman year, she traded in the soccer ball for a 20 pound drum and loves every beat of it.

“We are a family within this large marching band, and while we all get along, there is something special about drumline,” said Gabbard, a mini drummer.

Gabbard started begging for a drum set when she was 6 years old, and shortly thereafter her parents acquiesced. Gabbard’s first experience in a percussion group was through her church.

“When the Fishers High School Marching Band came to my sixth grade concert, I knew I wanted to play the tenors,” says Gabbard.

She currently plays the mini tenor and is working her way up to tenors, the cluster of drums carried in front. Gabbard loves marching, playing drums and being with her friends. Conveniently she gets to do all of these things simultaneously in marching band.

Bass drummer Marcotte moved to Fishers four years ago in order to switch to a new gymnastics coach. She had over 20 national gymnastics championship titles, but shortly after the move, Marcotte suffered a spinal fracture. She spent her first summer in Fishers immobilized in a cast for a long and lonely three months. The injury prevented her from resuming her gymnastics path.

As a freshman marimba player, she spoke of the “percussion family” and how they looked after each other. Marcotte found solace in her new home with her new family – the drumline. It was then that she began to thrive on the encouragement everyone gave her, and her parents were thrilled that she recovered her spark that had been momentarily lost since her injury.

Naturally competitive, Marcotte channels her aggressiveness and determination into her performances. It also doesn’t hurt being one of three girls in an otherwise male-dominated drumline. She doesn’t back down from a challenge, and with all of the drumline pushing each other supportively, it only makes them better.

“I love the FHS Marching Band because it is fun, and it’s like one big family,” said Marcotte.

Coming together on a foundation based on their love of music, these musicians have also found encouragement, support and a sense of belonging. It is no wonder that the FHS Marching Tiger Band is award winning. November begins the winter percussion competition season that runs through April. The FHS winter percussion are four time state champions!

“Tapping off ” is a term used to describe the snare drummers who tap their sticks to the metal edge of the drum at the beginning of a performance. It is a call to attention and sets the beat. It is a signal to the winds, horns and brass and to all of the members to take a breath. And in that moment of tapping off, the breath, the anticipation, the adrenaline and the focus all culminates and it simply means: it’s showtime!

onceiving an idea happens rarely, acting on an idea even less frequently. The smallest percent of ideas are seen to fruition. The Burkhardt family is in this smallest percent.

The Burkhardt family of Fishers are entrepreneurs who developed their idea into a fledgling enterprise that is starting to make a name for itself in the foodie world. Their company, Petality, produces organic flower beverages such as rose, hibiscus and lavender tisanes, as well as palm soda. The company was selected as the grand prize winner in the start-up category at the Hottest Kitchen Entrepreneur Challenge held on July 30 at the Ivy Tech School of Culinary Arts.

Chosen from more than 80 entries of food artisans, their concept was awarded: $2,000 in seed money from Reliable Water Services, $1,250 of kitchen design services from Zesco.com and business and marketing plan software from the Indiana Small Business Development Center.

The brother and sister team of John and Andrea Burkhardt co-founded the company and John’s wife, Alecia, offers support as their social media expert. Together they came up with the name Petality, which is a blend of the words petals and vitality. Rich in Vitamin C and phytonutrients, the drinks are touted as having the health benefit of aiding the body to continue to function properly by maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and preventing disease.

The Burkhardt family moved to Fishers

in 1988 and John and Andrea attended Hamilton Southeastern schools. During their teen years, both siblings enjoyed drinking tea. Later, while traveling through Asia and Europe, they were exposed to tisanes, which are beverages made from brewing flower petals. Similar to the process of making a cup of tea, steeping petals releases the aroma, color and flavor of the flowers they come from. A long time natural health enthusiast, John was also intrigued with the history behind tisanes. For hundreds of years they were valued for the promotion of vitality and were the prized drink of kings and queens.

The idea of bottling and selling the fragrant brewed tisanes began to dawn on the Burkhardts and, after much investigation and research, they established Petality in the summer of 2013. Billed as the world’s

The family was encouraged to enter the Hottest Kitchen Entrepreneur Challenge from contacts they had made at the Indiana Small Business Development Center. After they were selected as a finalist, they were featured in an “Indy Style” segment on local television news station WISH Channel 8.

Since winning the contest, they have been overwhelmed by the response from retailers such as Trader’s Point Creamery and Whole Foods in California, who would like to carry their product. They are looking forward to full unveiling of their company this spring.

As Ebola continues to dominate the media headlines, take lives and leave children as orphans, the local Rotary Clubs within the Rotary District 6560 have stepped up to assist their brother and sister Rotarians in Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone, along with Guinea and Liberia, have been ravaged by the Ebola epidemic and labeled by the Word Health Organization (WHO) as one of the most challenging Ebola outbreaks to date.

on educating their citizens on how to prevent the transmission of Ebola. They are also encouraging people to promptly seek medical care in the event that they experience signs and symptoms associated with the disease.

The Rotary Club of Freetown raised nearly $3,000 in August 2014 to help increase public awareness campaigns in the two major epicentres of the outbreak, Kenema and Kailahun in the eastern region.

Radio has been used as a key medium in the current communication and social mobilisation strategy in Sierra Leone.

Secondly, the unwillingness and sometimes resistance by citizens to immediately inform public health officials of sick family members and regions’ governments response to remove such individuals from affected communities have contributed to the spread of Ebola.

The latter problem is now being addressed through massive awareness building campaigns to ensure that each household is reached with critical information. Through this process they hope to ensure community commitment and involvement in the halting of the disease.

President Emmanuel Assamany of the Rotary Club of Freetown reached out to his sister clubs including the Rotary Club of Fishers, who they have developed a meaningful partnership with over the years with the Water is Life project. Assamany’s intentions are to garner support and aid from his fellow Rotarians in this time of crisis. His hopes are that by collaborating efforts and resources with other Rotarians from around the world, the containment and possible end to Ebola would be nearer in sight.

The president of the Rotary Club of Fishers Michele Whelchel, spoke about her club’s decision to get involved and to share Assamany’s request for aid with other Rotary clubs in their district.

“In 2008-2009 our club decided to take on an international project called Water is Life,” Whelchel said. “At that time, our goal was to drill 100 wells in Sierra Leone and we partnered with the Rotary Club of Freetown. People were dying because of the water that they were drinking. Since 2009, we’ve been drilling wells and several of our club members have made trips to assist and oversee the progress in Sierra Leone.

We’ve hosted their clubs’ presidents here in the U.S. at our events and they have spoken to our members in regards to the progress that our efforts have contributed to. This project has built a strong relationship and friendship with our counterparts in Sierra Leone.”

When news of the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone reached the leadership of the Rotary Club of Fishers, the members felt that they needed to assist their fellow Rotarians overseas with their immediate needs.

“When I first read President Emmanuel’s proposal, I cried,” Whelchel admitted. “I was

so struck by his words. Rotarian presidents, past or current, have a kinship that develops naturally. Our District Governor, Tom Branum, Jr. first shared the proposal with me and I then shared it with our club. Our members have fostered friendships with the Rotarians from Sierra Leone. Our board discussed the proposal and we felt that the biggest concern was the need was for personal protective equipment (PPE). Do we think it’s a drop in the bucket? Yes. Will it make a difference and help to save a life? Yes.” So as not to suffer a mission drift, the Fishers club has invested a lot of money and resources into the wells that have been drilled in Sierra Leone, Whelchel requested that the last three wells of their 100 wells drilled commitment be installed next to hospitals.

“We reached out to our connections and after rigorous research, we found our best partnership is with Project Hope,” Whelchel explained. “Project Hope specializes in humanitarian efforts overseas. They are a credible organization and are already well established. They understand customs and are able to effectively safeguard the shipments to ensure that they reach their intended destination.”

Whelchel’s goal is to raise and match donations for a total of a $10,000 contribution. Her club will match up donations up to this amount from donations received from other Rotary clubs, individuals and companies.

“Once we reach our goal of $10,000, we will gladly accept additional donations," she said.
