geist, by As a kid growing up in a Los Angeles suburb, he was a pretty good basketball player. However, it was his older sister who was the family hoops star. While playing college basketball in California, his hardwood reputation skyrocketed, leading to selection as a ďŹ rst-round NBA draft pick. Eventually this Indiana Pacer became a free agent, and while tempted by the bright lights of a major NBA media market, he chose instead to re-sign with the Pacers. His name, however, is not Reggie. 8

he parallels between Pacers swingman Paul George and former Pacers star Reggie Miller are remarkable, including choosing to live in houses overlooking Geist Reservoir. “I guess it’s just history repeating itself,” said Paul during an interview after a recent Pacers practice at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. “We have similar stories. Growing up, my sister, Teiosha, was the big-time basketball player, the town favorite (Palmdale, CA). I was her little brother until I came into my own.”

T

Come into his own indeed. After just two seasons at Fresno State University, the Pacers grabbed Paul in the 2010 draft (10th overall). Last year was a breakout season for Paul

who was selected for the NBA All-Star team. In September, he signed a five-year, $90 million contract extension with Indiana. “I just love the city. Other places can have distractions. Here the city loves basketball, the state loves basketball….I couldn’t beat it,” he said. It was a busy off-season for Paul. In addition to contract negotiations, he worked hard to improve his game. “It was a chance to come back a better player,” he said. Paul also bought a home this summer in Diamond Pointe and lives about eight houses away from fellow Pacer, George Hill. Growing up, Paul told his parents that someday he’d live in a big house on a lake.

"I see the big party pontoons come by and people waving. They call out, ‘Good luck, Paul! We’re happy to have you here!’ So it’s great being up there [at Geist]."

Mission accomplished. “When George [Hill] told me about Geist, I fell in love the second I was in the area and immediately started looking for a house,” said Paul who also shot down a rumor that he and George had been Geist-area roommates. “We just carpool together,” he smiled. Paul said he really enjoyed his first summer of lake living. “[Neighbors] are very helpful. The lady next door is in catering, and she brought me desserts and lunch. It was just incredible. Kids come to the door with snacks and treats all the time.” While he’s not bothered that people know where he lives (after all, Paul posted a photo to Instagram), he hopes people will respect his privacy. “As long as they choose an appropriate time to say hello, I’m fine with it,” he explained. With winter on the horizon, Paul decided not to buy a boat just yet. “I didn’t want to when it’s starting to get cold. Next year I’ll have a boat, maybe a couple of jet skis, for people who want to come over and hang out.” He does notice when passing boaters shout greetings to him while standing on his dock. “Yeah, I get that a lot. I see the big party pontoons come by and people waving. They call out, ‘Good luck, Paul! We’re happy to have you here!’ So it’s great being up there [at Geist].” Prior to the start of basketball season, Paul’s parents, Paul and Paulette, visited his Geist home for a couple weeks. Every morning, he’d see his dad out on the dock fishing. “My dad’s a big-time fisherman…so he’s been loving it.” Paul also has been known to drop a baited line on occasion. “George [Hill] owns a boat, so I’ll call him up sometimes and say, ‘George, let’s get on the lake.’ He’ll drive his boat over to my dock, pick me up and we’ll go out for the day and do our thing.” Paul also shared that George recently saved his beloved pit bull after the dog fell into the lake. “I wasn’t there at the time. Thank God George was at my house, and he was able to save him. That dog’s my buddy.” Paul is a big fan of Bella Vita’s Chicken Alfredo but hasn’t yet discovered Mama Bear’s, promising he’ll pay a visit there soon for a cup of coffee. He’s also found a place to call home. “I love it. I enjoy being out there [at Geist]. You guys are friendly. If you guys would like to come by and say hi, make sure you bring some food! Thanks for your hospitality,” he smiled.

t was a passing vision, but it inspired something so much bigger, ultimately impacting many hundreds of people.

Diana Malmloff of Fishers was driving her van and two children from Indianapolis to Fort Wayne when she noticed smoke coming from a house fire. She was struck by the profound loss and potential displacement of a family from their home and how that would impact the children. Shortly thereafter, she mentioned the spark of an idea to some close friends, Katie Richard, Stacy Neil and Whitni Buckles. Being mothers themselves and united through Heritage Christian

So on the Fourth of July, they hatched a new organization, The Toy Closet, with a seven member board made up of an accountant, attorney, IT person, nurse, marketer and PhD in psychology. Between them, they have 17 boys and three girls, so they truly understand the needs of children. Their mission is to provide new, nice things that those children in crisis can feel are truly their own and to know someone cares about them. They’ve provided backpacks to fire stations and friends of friends and are also looking into other organizations that may need their help. Currently The Toy Closet has a partnership with The Julian Center where they provide a minimum of 25 filled backpacks every month to fill a consistent need. “These children

arrive with nothing,” said Diana. “The backpack can go to school with them and includes a laminated tag with their own name. It is full of age-specific toys, games and a blanket or stuffed animal for comfort as well as a note of encouragement created by groups such as Boy Scouts with a message of hope.” In addition, every backpack has been prayed over. Moms clubs, Bible studies, Girl Scouts, Vacation Bible Schools and more have donated items and dollars for the bags. Diana said the biggest expense is the new toys. They are hoping to find more corporate partners for ongoing provisions of bags, blankets, etc., so they can ultimately expand their mission. You are encouraged to donate through their blog, indytoycloset.blogspot.com. Kathi Moore, a career marketer and public relations director, has a natural curiosity that leads her in many different directions and helps to provide ideas for her writing. She and her husband have 3 children, 3 dogs and 3 cats.

is and why it’s important. It also details the history of community art and the vision for how best to use art within our community,” said Jocelyn Vare, president of the Fishers Arts Committee. Evaluation criteria is also included in the document. “Public art brings the community together,” said Vare. “We’ve had great success with the community chalkboards in the pocket park, not to mention the community impact of the amphitheater.”

Local artist’s mural to embody the spirit of Fishers | Beth Taylor Artist and Fishers native Nekoda Witsken will unveil the first public art mural on November 9 – which just happens to be her 21st birthday. Located at the corner of Jaycee and 116th Street in the pocket park, the mural will cover the right side of the building’s brick façade. Witsken, a pre-med student at Purdue University, hopes to create a conversation piece for Fishers residents. “I lived in Fishers all of my life and attended Hamilton Southeastern, so in my preliminary design for my proposal, I wanted to capture the work ethic and historical importance of the Mudsocks region,” said Witsken. Witsken embodies the strong work ethic she hopes to display in her mural. She is managing a short window of five to six weeks from predesign to completion by coming home to Fishers on the weekends. “I love to paint. It makes me happy!” Witsken said. Sherwin Williams is donating materials for the project. Witsken’s mural is the first part of the Town of Fishers Community Art Plan. The document is a joint collaboration among the Town of Fishers, the Fishers Arts Council and the Fishers Cultural Tourism Group. The Fishers Arts Committee, which meets to select the winning concept, pulls members from these core groups. “The four sections of the plan highlight what community art

With 17 sketches submitted for the Request for Proposals for the first mural, the Fishers Arts Committee used a detailed rubric based on a scale of one to three points that includes the artist’s application, qualifications, creativity, spirit and impact. Points were also awarded based on how the artist would use the medium, safety, maintenance and feasibility. Two bonus points were given to artists from Fishers. “We want the community to see that public art has a place in Fishers. It’s cool!” added Vare. Beth Taylor is an experienced freelance editor and writer whose work has appeared in several community magazines during her 15-year career. Crafting a freelance business has provided her the opportunity to stay at home with her two young daughters.

SCHOOL NEWS

Students Design HSE Schools Foundation Logo Inspiring Innovation Through Education Students are competing with kids from around the world.”

| Janet C. Striebel Five students from Fishers High School (FHS) have successfully designed the new logo for Hamilton Southeastern Schools Foundation which is making its debut this fall. The celebration of this new symbol coincides with the overall rebranding strategy of the foundation. After all, the former logo has been around since 2001 when the foundation was first incepted. “Our goal of the Foundation’s new strategic vision is to focus on how we can broaden our impact and positively reach more students and teachers than we did in our first 10 years,” says Joe Eaton, Immediate Past President. In case you haven’t heard, the HSE School District has implemented a new HSE21 Instructional Program to help students and teachers move to a digital experience with iPads and Apple TVs in each classroom. (hse21.org) The Foundation’s new mission focuses on enhancing educational opportunities, engaging the community and assisting with the new HSE21 program. “We were extremely pleased that our March 2013 Game Day Dinner event was such an overwhelming success that we were able to contribute $10,000 to the HSE21 initiatives,” said Eaton. “When the budgets became tighter, we wanted to meet the needs of students and teachers by creating an excellent investment strategy for the community,” says Tim Rogers, Student Liaison of the Foundation. “We could see that students need to be prepared for a broader scope of competition. It’s not about here anymore. 16

fishers C O M M U N I T Y

Fishers_November_2013.indd 16

Consequently, it was Rogers’ suggestion for the students to create the new logo. He proposed this idea to the board, and they willingly accepted. He says, “I knew we needed to create mentoring opportunities for students. I also knew they would hit a home run with this.” Rogers, fellow board member Tim Calvert and Executive Director Lisa Allen provided parameters and met monthly with students. In addition, students were able to display their ideas to the board and receive feedback, which in turn helped cultivate their presentation and speaking skills. “The students really took ownership in creating the design,” says Abbey Browning, FHS Art Teacher who helped mentor the students. “I was there to give feedback and offer suggestions about their ideas, but the students rose to the challenge and came up with something of which I think they are all proud." The six month project evolved through many stages, beginning last school year in November and ended in April. Each of the five students began with an individual idea. “We bounced ideas off of each other and tweaked our own and each other’s perspective until we were happy with the end result,” says Blake Schwarz, FHS senior. The students brainstormed many logo icons including a book, computer, light bulb and even an apple before they finally decided on a pillar. “I thought of how the pillar represents education and how the foundation functions to support different initiatives of school,” says Ryusuke Saito, FHS senior. The other three students who worked on this project were Krisi Hinova, Marshall Fettig and Kelsey Vergon.

Traditionally, the Foundation has helped raise funds for student scholarships and grants for teachers by participating in the Geist Half Marathon, Spring Dinner, Mudsock Event, Golf Scramble and Dollars for Seniors. The Foundation has just kicked off a fundraising campaign as part of its new strategic vision to raise revenue from corporate sponsors and engage more parents, staff and teachers from across the entire school district. The new logo illustrates a pillar which represents the foundation supporting students and teachers. The sun bursts continue thematically with the prior logo image of the sun rising. The letters are in red (representing FHS) and blue (signifying HSEHS) while sporting the tagline, “Inspiring Innovation through Education.” Rogers leaves us on an optimistic note when he says, “My hope is that as a community, we will all come to recognize this new logo as easily as the Nike Swoosh, and we’ll know it represents the foundation without looking at the title or tagline.” Janet C. Striebel is a Fishers resident and freelance writer. She and her husband, Doug, have three children: Ryan, Jessica and Justin. She has been writing for neighboring atGeist for over seven years and claims that the best part is meeting all the interesting people in her community.

SEAN KEEFER

Fishers Resident a Key Player on Gov. Pence’s Team | Neal G. Moore Sit down in Sean Keefer’s Indiana Statehouse office, and you can’t help but notice a book entitled, Egypt, Greece and Rome, laying on his desk. When questioned about his literary choice, Keefer called it “a great book…my lunchtime reading.” Not exactly light reading, mind you, but it certainly defines the buttoned-down Fishers resident to a T. Public policy and state governance have dominated his professional career since graduating from Hillsdale College, then Indiana University with a master’s degree in Western European Studies. NOVEMBER 2013

Keefer, 36, has played key roles in the administrations of Governors Mitch Daniels and Mike Pence, including stints with the Departments of Labor and Health and the Secretary of State’s office. He was directly involved in Gov. Daniels’ “Major Moves” highway initiative, and while health department chief of staff, Keefer set about modernizing the agency’s record keeping. In September, the governor moved Keefer from his position as commissioner of the Indiana Department of Labor to his current role as Pence’s legislative director. His primary responsibility now is shepherding the governor’s legislative goals through the Indiana General Assembly. “I work with [the administration’s] policy director on the governor’s agenda and then promote the agenda vigorously to move Indiana forward,” said Keefer, who also keeps an eye on the administration’s operational issues. Promoting the governor and his agenda was an oft-repeated theme during Townepost’s visit with Keefer, who is nothing if not the quintessential political team player. When asked what a good day in the office is, he skillfully turned the focus back to his boss. “To be a resource and problem solver and advance the governor’s agenda,” he explained. One would expect nothing less from someone watching the political theater (Greek theater?) that plays out in the General Assembly and then is tasked with crafting a functional strategy that is palatable to both Republicans and Democrats. “My approach is not a strong partisan mindset,” he said, acknowledging the presence and value of different policy perspectives. “Our approach is what the governor calls servant leadership….Politics is always contentious, but [the administration] put a strong emphasis on the values we agree with.” 22

fishers C O M M U N I T Y

Fishers_November_2013.indd 22

As a senior staff member, Keefer is among the governor’s chief advisors, working directly with Gov. Pence several hours each week on important decisions. In January, Keefer enters his first General Assembly as gubernatorial legislative director but hardly as a political novice. He described himself as a longtime friend of House Speaker Brian Bosma. A Fort Wayne native, Keefer knows Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore David Long’s family. And Keefer said he has key contacts among Indiana Democratic leadership. “I’ve always had a good relationship in the past and am looking forward to developing [those relationships]. We all need to work together. The key is no surprises.” While wholly Hoosier, Keefer does have an international flare about him. After college, the bilingual (Spanish) Keefer spent nine months in Spain. He met his wife, Gaby, while living and working in Argentina. They have two children, Santiago and Ramiro, and have lived in Fishers’ Meadowbrook Village since 2007. An avid tennis player, the lefty recently won a tournament. That’s the

only thing “left” about Keefer who clearly and unapologetically espouses conservative, Republican values. One gets the sense, however, that he’s open to alternative approaches when confronting the state’s challenges. “[There are] a lot of big issues [that can be] processed in different ways,” he said, noting that many states would like to be in Indiana’s position discussing how to spend a budget surplus. Keefer called Fishers a community that is figuring out its identity. “There’s a lot going on in Fishers. The town is at a good crossroads,” he told Townepost. “Great people, great environment. I’m excited to see Fishers grow.” With a first mayoral election looming, perhaps Fishers’ political leadership should thumb through Keefer’s desktop tome about ancient civilizations. There’s bound to be a few lessons learned about good governance in there. Neal G. Moore has over 30 years of media and communications experience, including TV news anchoring and reporting in Indianapolis. For more information, visit NealMoore.com.

A Holiday Tradition You Can Really Sink Your Teeth Into 24

Fishers_November_2013.indd 24

In our fast-paced world where nearly everything is obsolete the moment it comes out, there is something very reassuring and endearing about our holiday traditions. Traditions remind us that some things are truly meant to last. For some, the holiday means traveling to see loved ones, pumpkin pie, stuffing and turkey roasting in the oven, while for others it means lying around watching football games or planning for Black Friday sales. Why not try a new tradition that will truly make a difference? Consider participatin g in the 11th annual Wheeler Mission Drumstick Dash! The 2013 Drumstick Dash will be held in Broad Ripple on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 28 at 9 am for the 4.6 mile competitive run/ walk and the 2.5 mile fun run/walk.

The Lil’ Gobbler’s Run is at 10:15 am. Wheeler Mission is expecting around 18,000 participants. Brian Crispin, Director of Marketing for Wheeler Mission, says the race “was the first Thanksgiving Day event in the state and is now the third largest organized run in the state with participants from not just Central Indiana but also from 48 states." The event is hosted by Blue Mile and will benefit homeless men, women and children in our community. According to the Coalition for Homelessness and Prevention, an organization dedicated to tracking the number of homeless men, women and children, the number of homeless in Indianapolis will be around 1,600 in 2013. BREAKING THE BARRIER Montford Point Marines Being in the presence of Corley and Washington is being in the presence of history itself. Both of these men are Marines. They were both proudly part of a special place in history, shattering glass ceilings and leading the way for change in the US military. Before Corley became a Marine, he felt so strongly the desire to serve his country that he dropped out of Crispus Attucks High School, lied about his age, and joined the Air Force. While at the USAF reception center at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Corley saw a peculiar sight – a unit of Japanese Americans training. Corley would later find out that this unit (the 100th battalion of the 442nd regimental combat team) fought along side the 92nd Buffalo Soldiers in Italy and Europe, becoming one of the most decorated units of the war.

FISHERS RESIDENTS

Speaking with the awe of a curious youth, Corley speaks of meeting a Tuskegee Airman in Ft Wayne while he was loading C47s. Corley was impressed that the Airman had access to the officers quarters and was truly inspired by him. Shortly thereafter, the USAF discovered Corley’s true age gave him an Honorable discharge. Corley then began working on the family farm in Hamilton County until he was of age to reenlist, this time with the Marines. Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina had a separate camp for blacks, this was Montford Point. Corley shares that their black drill Sargents were tougher on them than their white drill Sargents. “They wanted us more prepared, tougher, stronger and more focused than any other Marines and we had to be – given what was ahead, we needed the strength and moral character to lead.” Corley was part of the group that relieved the soldiers of the 52nd on Saipan. There he was part of the group guarding Japanese POWs. “I was in charge of feeding 7 of the largest and meanest Japanese soldiers I’d ever seen. They only wore loincloths and had murdered and cannibalized a family of locals and were to be hanged.” In another recollection, Corley describes an interesting situation en route to chow line, for walking toward him, seemingly leaving the mess hall were three men. US soldiers were flanking a Japanese officer who had come out of hiding and was walking alongside the soldiers. Corley pulled his gun on him and told him hands up, to the surprise of the oblivious soldiers on either side of the new prisoner.

Cpl. Averritt Corley

For his actions, Corley was given a promotion and transferred over to Guam where he was over 4 other Marines and was issued a vehicle for transport. At the time, this was against the segregated protocol of the Marines. Corley received little if any friction for his new promotion. He was treated respectfully in his new position. Corley received an ‘honorable discharge’ as a First Lieutenant in August 1947. In 1949, Averitte Corley graduated from Jackson Central High School (later named Hamilton Heights High School), and using the GI Bill, he attended Purdue University where he majored in Agriculture. Corley then went to Indiana University for a master’s degree in Counseling. Corley spent a long career with the Indianapolis Police Department, retiring as a Sergeant, and then worked for the US Postal Service.

Regimental Sgt. Major Johnny Washington

Sgt. Major Washington made a career for himself in the Marines, for he served for 30 years before retiring, having served in not just WWII but also Korea and Vietnam. Not many soldiers can claim all of those on their record and live to tell. Washington states, “Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina, was my home that I would come back to repeatedly for 30 years.”

“The Marine Corps is the story of my life”, says Sgt. Major Washington, “starting with boot camp where the civilian life is erased, establishing a military foundation.” Being a Marine established such a strong foundation for Washington that he claims he couldn’t get enough of it. Few soldiers lived in as many different locations in the US and around the world as Washington has. When Washington and his platoon were preparing for Korea, the experience was different from the 1940s, for this was the end of segregation in the military. Washington states, “Color was never a problem with the Marines. All blood is red.” After 12-15 months of combat in Korea, Washington returned to Lejeune which was his home sweet home that he and his family would return to every few years. Sgt. Major Washington is one of the most-decorated Montford Point Marines, having served in three major wars and been rewarded for his acts of bravery. He was a nononsense platoon commander who was the toughest on his men. “I would be given the rowdiest, laziest group of boys and turn them into one of the best platoons of soldiers. Boys to men is what they would become under my command. The troops didn’t like it, but I did my job.” Regimental Sgt. Major Washington would spend his final months in active duty working along with the Inspector General.

“I’ve seen more than my share of combat, and I still miss it,” says Washington. Not long after this interview, I spent some time with current Camp Lejeune Marines. Having shared my conversation with Corley and Washington, a soldier asked, “What was it like being in their presence?” These heroes/soldiers/men of valor invoke awe with Marines today. These brave, pioneering soldiers are the stuff of legend. Punching through the glass ceiling, their generation paved a smoother path for minorities and women serving proudly around the world. Corley and Washington are members of a small, exclusive club of proud Montford Point Marines. Both are now living quietly in the Fort Benjamin Harrison area, close to military and family ties. “Once a Marine, always a Marine,” says Sgt. Major Washington. “Oorah!”

Gluten Free Living Supported | Tracie Nebrich

On Saturday, October 5th, I was fortunate enough to attend the Gluten Free Expo which was hosted by Gluten Free Living, in Carmel. I persuaded my good friend, and publisher of the Fishers Community Newsletter, Laurie Quinn, to accompany me. While I suffer from Celiac Sprue, an autoimmune disease which affects the lining of your intestines, Laurie does not. So I wanted to not only educate her on my condition, but to have her try some of the foods that are available to the gluten free and allergy community. There were several food booths set up at the Expo which offered information about the products, food samples, freebies and coupons. A few of my favorites were Schar brand, which offers a variety of pastas, cookies and bread. Udi’s products consists of tortillas, cookies, brownies, muffins and bread. Nogii has a great line of protein bars; Caesar’s which carries a frozen line of ravioli, stuffed shell’s, lasagna and gnocchi. Then there was Puccini’s, my number one pizza joint, dishing out their gluten free pasta. There was a separate section set-up for tasting various gluten free alcohols. There were several ciders on hand, Strongbow, Fox Brand, and Crispin to name a few. My favorite cider is Angry Orchard, and there were several flavors such as Apple Ginger and Cinnful Apple to taste. They also had some gluten free beers to sample for instance, Daura, Green’s, and Steadfast. This section was one of Laurie and I’s favorite places at the Expo! Another company that stuck out at the Expo was Skinny & Co. Coconut Oil. You might ask why this coconut oil was so different from other coconut oils. Well this 100% natural, unrefined, extra virgin, pesticide free solid has many uses from cooking with it, using it as a skin lotion, to a moisturizer for your hair, to healing cuts and rashes. It can also be used to get your teeth whiter by the art of oil pulling. The Expo also provided information to help those with celiac cope with the disease. The Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) of Indianapolis, whose mission is to support those with gluten sensitivities, celiac disease, and gluten intolerances lead happy and healthy lives, was available handing out information about their local support group. They also provided a magazine called Celebrate GlutenFree which helps educate the gluten free community.

L-R: Crispin Apple Cider is gluten free! . A variety of flavors of Skyy vodka are gluten free . Glutino had a large sampling of products for everyone to try . Skinny & Co. had a unique item to sample: Coconut Oil . Gluten Intolerance Group provided support and information to attendees 30

I say this Expo was fun not only for me, but also for Laurie. I know she learned a lot and she even liked the majority of the products that she tried. My son, who has multiple food allergies, was especially happy when I brought home a box of Enjoy Life Cocoa Loco bars that have been hard to come by! For those that missed it this year, make sure that you attend next year. It’s definitely worth it! Tracie Nebrich has been a Flight Attendant for Delta Airlines for 17 years. NEIGHBORHOOD MATCHING GRANTS | Marcy Vigren Do you want to know the best kept secret in town? Ok, lean in close. The Town of Fishers is GIVING AWAY money. Well let me clarify… they are awarding matching grants to neighborhoods who are at least 10 years old and in need of a beautification project. That’s right, they will pay for up to half the cost of an approved neighborhood project. Why would the Town do this? Nathan George, the Deputy Town Manager, explained, “This grant helps to beautify our town, improve community safety by providing ownership to the community and increase property value.” An HOA or management company can apply for this matching grant by going onto the Town of Fishers website. After the application process and acceptance, the Town will grant up to $5,000 to a neighborhood project to enhance its appearance or improve the community. Such projects include retention ponds, entrance signs/walls, fencing, sidewalks, benches, trees/shrubs/flower beds with a more permanent nature, lighting or other related improvements located on the perimeter of the neighborhood. Projects that won’t be considered are maintenance items, non-permanent items such as mulch or annuals and projects located on interior streets. Since its inception in 2000, the Town of Fishers has already awarded almost $370,000 in 128 neighborhood matching grants. Twelve neighborhoods received 32

fishers C O M M U N I T Y

Fishers_November_2013.indd 32

grants this year including Cambridge, Canal Place, Connor Knoll, Gray Eagle, Heritage Meadow, Highland Springs North, Ridgefield, Sterling Green, Walnut Hills, Weatherstone, Windjammer Bay and Woodberry. Well no WONDER Fishers is so darn pretty! It is programs such as this that keeps this town high on the list of the “Top 100 Places to Live.” In fact, another such program is the Tree Matching Grant called “Plant a Tree, Grant a Tree.” This program awards funds to neighborhoods, nonprofits and homeowners within town limits as incentive to plant trees to enhance the beauty of our community. Both grants are awarded based on how well the project improves the aesthetics and quality of life in the community and subdivision. Applications are accepted up to March, considered by the committee and proposed to the council in May. If you or your neighborhood are awarded a grant, you are reimbursed after proof of completion. So listen up, HOAs. Add this to your next meeting agenda. For 2014, the Town has budgeted up to $45,000 for the Neighborhood Matching Grant program and another $20,000 for the “Plant a Tree, Grant a Tree” program. If you haven’t been awarded one of these grants in the past three years, you may have an opportunity for financial help on a project! Go get it! For more information or to apply for a grant, visit fishers.in.us. Click on Community Services, go to HOAs and click Matching Grants.

EVENTS

You’re Invited

to a Downton Abbey Tea Party!

| J. Andy Murphy . Photos | Kami Laux of Studio 116, Fishers Downton Abbey fans, don’t get your knickers in a twist if you can’t wait for Season 4 of the PBS hit show Downton Abbey to begin January 5. On November 17, Dame Rita Beck, proprietor of Rita’s Backyard Garden Center, will transform her lovely Tea Room into a perfect Highclere Castle Manor setting, rivaling the elegant and stately dining room fit for a Queen’s Court! This is one tea party you won’t want to miss, but space is limited so make your reservations soon. Dame Rita and her Downton Staff, referred to as Nippers (reference originated from the scurrying in and out between

tables by the wait staff as they served their guests), will greet you in true English maid outfits created by server Rachel Powell for this special event. Born in Luton, England, the very English Kathleen BennerHart (known to us on this day as Mrs. Patmore) is the Head Cook. Be prepared for a wonderful menu created from her own original English recipes that will keep you coming back to Rita’s Backyard long after the fun of the Downton Tea Party. Be advised: Don’t eat very much before you come as the wonderful sandwiches, soups, desserts and other surprises will more than fill you up. The teas, served in beautiful china teapots, will delight you beyond any other tea you’ve ever had. You must try the honey served with your tea as it is harvested from Rita’s own beehive at the Garden Center. It is like no other honey on the market, and yes, it is for sale! Lady Cora loves this honey! Guests are invited to dress in the period of Downton finery and to be prepared to connect with like-minded Abbey Geeks who will be put to the test with an after party game that awards the winner who knows the most about the residents and servants of Highclere Manor with a stately Grand Prize. Rita’s Backyard is quaint and whimsical by design and filled with unique and lovely retail items that just might make your holiday gift buying so much easier. Before you come, Dame Rita thought you might want the skinny about how the serving of tea began. History About the Partaking of Tea The actual taking of tea in the afternoon developed into a new social event in the late 1830s and early 1840s. It was Anne, Duchess of Bedford, one of Queen Victoria’s ladiesin-waiting, who is credited for first “inventing” Afternoon Tea. It seems the gap between lunch and supper was widening, so Anne started asking for tea and small cakes to be brought to her private quarters. She quickly realized that a lot of gossip could be shared if she invited other ladies to her quarters to share her cakes. Queen Victoria herself was encouraged to start hosting her own parties as a way of reentering society after the passing of her beloved husband, Albert. Other women picked up the idea and thus the ritual of drinking tea began.

Some helpful tips from the Lady Violet “Dowager” Rules of Etiquette • Sugar/lemon: The tea is poured first, then sugar or thinly sliced lemon, and never milk and lemon together as it will curdle.

• Milk goes in after sugar: A nice little superstition says, “To put milk in your tea before sugar is to cross the path of love, perhaps never to marry.” • Pouring tea: If you are the hostess, you should pour. If you are taking tea at a tea house, it is the person who is closest to the pot when the pot is brought to the table. • Proper placement of spoon: The spoon never stays in the cup. • Proper holding of cup: Use both hands to lift both cup and saucer to drink from, and please no pinkies. • Scones: The most practical approach is to split the scone horizontally before adding your favorite spreads.

Did you know that High Tea was first meant to be taken in “high chairs” at the dinner table, thus the name attached? Afternoon Tea is actually a meal that the Manor’s working servants had in the late afternoon before they served the evening meal to the Lords and Ladies in the preferred time period of 8-9 pm.

• Proper way to eat: Use your fingers to eat bite-size pastries as well as sliced loafs, breaking off small pieces before consuming. Use a dessert fork to eat larger pastries. • No dunk zone: Unless your tea party is very informal, dunking treats in your tea will garner a scowl from the Dowager.

This separated-class meal came with cold meats and potatoes as well as other foods with tea and perhaps a beer. Funny to note that Americans think that Afternoon Tea is only associated with the top tier of English society and consists of crustless tea sandwiches and scones. Not to upset the American imagination of partaking tea, some London tea houses use the terms interchangeably to keep tourists happy with the image they have while engaging in an Afternoon Tea service. So gather your girlfriends and plan on an afternoon delight as you walk back in time to enjoy tea and tasty food served the Downton Abbey way. It will set the stage for your own memories of a time that still enchants us all! Who knows, maybe Mr. Carson will be your server! Personally I hope it’s Mr. Bates! For more information on the Downton Abbey Tea November 17, please call Dame Rita Beck at 317-842-0235 or email your request for reservations to rita@ritasbackyard.com. Cost: $40. Rita’s Backyard is located at 12244 E. 116th St., Fishers, IN (between Hoosier and Brooke School Roads). J. Andy Murphy is a published author and works as a literary agent for regional writers. She serves as the Executive Director of the WriteStuff Writers Conferences and Events.

oliday Mart isn’t a craft fair, nor is it a hobby show, says Junior League of Indianapolis (JLI) member Tina Hayes of Center Grove. Instead, it’s a one-of-a-kind shopping experience where people can find some of the most unique gifts for the upcoming holiday season. “You’re literally walking into the most unique mall you’ve ever been to when you come to Holiday Mart,” Hayes said. “It’s shopping at its

finest. Holiday Mart is absolutely worth driving to the Indiana State Fairgrounds for.” Beginning on Wednesday, November 13 and running through Sunday, November 17, JLI will host its 43rd Holiday Mart 2013, featuring more than 100 merchants from across the country. Buyers can peruse women and children’s apparel, men’s specialty items, gifts, holiday décor, gourmet food items, jewelry and more. Holiday Mart serves as the primary fundraising event for JLI, an organization of women committed to

promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Funds raised at Holiday Mart benefit various projects and programs, says Mica Wilson, JLI president-elect of Zionsville. JLI estimates it will net around $300,000 from the event, and all the proceeds will go back into the community. This year, JLI is focusing on preparing students for academic success and is working with three local organizations:

Get a sneak peek at all 2013 Holiday Mart has to offer. Features hors d’oeuvres and valet parking. GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT Friday, Nov. 15 6:30 - 10 pm $25 per person

Favorite Part of Holiday Mart “I love the Girls’ Night Out event. It’s a little dressier, and it’s really fun to see mothers and daughters or groups of friends come out. It gets to be a tradition of the year for them and has become the kick-off to the holiday season.” Why She Got Involved “You get to spend a lot of time working with the committee and your subcommittee, and you get to know the people much better. Also I’m always all about shopping local, eating local and supporting the local community, and this event has so many smaller local vendors participating.”

This night out of shopping will feature extended shopping hours and includes dessert, cocktails, swag bags and merchant discounts. Mica Wilson, JLI president-elect, said the two special events are a blast because they mark the beginning of the holiday season and give women a chance to dress up and spend time with each other while shopping. Mistletoe Madness will take place throughout Holiday Mart. JLI runs this special large booth which features merchandise from about 30 smaller merchants. JLI earns a commission on all merchandise sold here. Holiday Mart also will have a silent auction.

V'S BARBERSHOP SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY IN AN UNUSUAL WAY

For the third consecutive year, V’s Barbershop has done their part to provide community support in a rather unusual way. The week prior to sectionals, the Hamilton Southeastern football team has created a tradition in which the seniors sport a mohawk in preparation of the game. Some might wear it better than others; however, there is no doubt regarding their commitment to the team after they leave the barber chair. Chad Renbarger, owner of V’s Barbershop, provides the haircuts to the team at no charge. When asked how it all got started, he replied, “We were looking for a creative way to show support for the community in which we live and work, and when this opportunity presented itself, it seemed like a natural fit.” So if you happen to notice an unusually large number of mohawk haircuts this time of year, you can be certain of two things: sectionals are close for the HSE varsity football team, and you have V’s Barbershop to thank for helping the boys demonstrate their team loyalty.

Egg Drop Experiment Rite of Passage | Christy Watson Do not adjust your television set. This is not a scene as depicted in an episode of ABC’s Modern Family. This is real life. Eggs will be dropped from various heights around your house. Trips to the hardware store will be necessary, or if you’re lucky, just a trip to the drugstore or even the attic. The EGG DROP EXPERIMENT is being assigned to Hamilton Southeastern eighth grade science students. When put together in a sentence, these three simple words can elicit quite a curious response. After all, not a lot of positive imagery comes from dropping a raw egg nor is much experimentation required to find out what happens. But as many local parents know, this rite of passage for our eighth grade students becomes quite a brainteaser for the entire family, the entire Modern Family… While the concept is simple, the restrictions governing the experiment are not. Students must design a carrier to safely protect a raw egg from the effects of being dropped 6.2 meters off the football field bleachers. Three separate layers of protection must be used with the most obvious padding items (cotton, marshmallows and bubble wrap) forbidden. The mass of the carrier also must be considered with points being awarded for both lighter and heavier weighted carriers. Hamilton Southeastern Junior High (HSJH) completed their egg drop experiment in September. Eighth grade Science Teacher Eric Brown hopes the age old experiment will create a love of science in his students. “The scientific method is a way of thinking that can solve most any problem, even

something as silly as how to protect a falling egg.” Brown who completed his own egg drop carrier in eighth grade admits that food products and the creative use of chicken wire are some shockingly effective insulators. Dog feces in leaves did prove to be an effective egg carrier for one former Fishers Junior High (FJH) student. “It is certainly not permissible today,” assures FJH Science Teacher John Schwoeppe. He along with Riverside Junior High will be conducting their Egg Drop Experiment in the spring. Schwoeppe hopes that students see the relationship between developing their design and how it relates to Newton’s Laws of Motion. “The most fun part about the egg drop was right after you dropped it. You go over to it and open it so slowly with anticipation, questioning whether it survived or broke,” offers HSJH eighth grade student Emma Hendricks, a student in Ms. Caitlin McKee’s class. Her egg did in fact survive the drop intact, and Hendricks was credited with the original idea of surrounding her egg in homemade Play-Doh! Above: Hamilton Southeastern Junior High 8th grade teacher Miss McKee drops an egg from 6.2 meters high in a shoebox crafted by Emma Hendricks (left).

Some of you are breathing a sigh of relief that those days are long past as your children have safely entered high school and beyond. Others may be smiling as memories resurface of the vain attempts to keep the egg in tact from the 6.2 meter drop. It can be a comedic but very educational experience quite worthy of a sitcom episode. Christy Watson is a mother to three beautiful children and works parttime at Mama Bear’s Bakery.

Rugby

A MISUNDERSTOOD SPORT THAT WELCOMES EVERYONE

| Whitney Mucha The Southeastern Rugby Club will be adding a flag rugby team to the spring 2014 S.P.O.R.T.S (Southeastern Program Of Recreational Team Sports) lineup for second, third and fourth grade boys and girls. This new opportunity for sports participation in Fishers may spark many questions for parents. As a parent, I was intrigued when I heard about this new spring sports option for my two boys. But what is rugby? I grew up watching football with my dad. I learned enough about the sport for it to come in handy during college as I enjoyed playing Madden Football on the PlayStation with the guys in my dorm. A great skill for a single college girl…I am now the mother of two boys who play football. So why am I telling you about my football knowledge? Well I thought rugby was just like football but without padding or a helmet. I was wrong. If you have never been introduced to rugby or only have limited knowledge about the sport, you are in for a surprise. Michelle Leroux, Executive Director of Rugby Indiana, explains it best: “Rugby is more like a cross between soccer, football and basketball. It is like football because you run with the ball in your hands, you pass the ball with your hands and you run across a goal line in order to score. But the flow of the game is more like soccer, constantly moving up and down the field, where possession changes often with very few stoppages. We pass the ball in rugby, but the passes are 42

Fishers_November_2013.indd 42

always backwards and with pressure, so players must have great ball handling skills like in basketball.” Michelle’s description made me want to learn more about the sport, so I watched several videos available at rugbyindiana.com. Everyone seems to be having so much fun on the videos. Why? Rugby has a position for everyone. Curt Trout, Head Coach/ Sponsor of the Fishers High School Rugby Club, described the diversity and inclusion inherent to the sport of rugby: “I’ve been coaching sports for 20 years and have seen every type of athlete fall in love with rugby! I’ve coached All State tennis players, swimmers, basketball players, football players and kids new to the sport. The game consists of 15 players on the field for each team, so there is more opportunity for everyone to play.” Michelle also mentioned the wide range of male and female athletes who play rugby. “There is a position for everyone who wants to play – large or thin, short or tall.” This sport is looking better and better. What about opportunities to play after high school? John Harley, Youth Coach for Southeastern Rugby, highlighted the growth in rugby participation: “Since the 2016 Olympics will introduce rugby as an Olympic sport, the USA Eagles rugby team and colleges all over the country have started to give financial aid to players coming to play rugby. This is another opportunity to continue playing sports and get an education.”

Rugby is a game for all ages, but many players in our area aren’t exposed to the sport until they reach high school. Michael Barry, Southeastern Rugby President, shared, “Year after year, we get new players in high school that regret they did not try rugby sooner. With the addition of the middle school program two years ago and the new elementary school age flag rugby, young players can now develop and grow as players for years to come. I would love to have another player on the USA Rugby Youth National team, like Colin Snyder was in 2011.” Hmm…maybe it will be a Mucha? The famous phrase, “Rugby is a beastly game played by gentlemen,” had me wondering about the values and safety of the sport. Nico Squadroni, Head High School Coach for Southeastern Rugby, helped alleviate my concerns: “The number one reason I hear that someone does not play rugby is because it is too ‘dangerous.’ Rugby is safer than soccer, hockey, football and numerous other sports, per statistics." “Rugby laws are set to protect each player by reducing dangerous plays. We are all aware of the NFL movement to take out hits to the head, hitting defenseless players and overall unnecessary hits. Rugby is set up so these dangerous plays are not allowed, and players are actually kicked out for such tackles. Rugby also focuses strongly on proper and safe tackling. Once you have protected both the tackler and

the tackled, the risk of injury in rugby (and other sports) is greatly decreased.” The sport actually has a set of five core values: Teamwork, Discipline, Enjoyment, Respect and Sportsmanship. In the spirit of sportsmanship, rugby has a long running tradition of celebrating after each game with a social event for both teams, hosted by the home team. Michelle says these aftergame celebrations are filled with good cheer and camaraderie. Watch more about rugby core values at youtu.be/Y0jAbHXhRr8. Are you ready for some rugby? I know my kids are going to love trying this new flag sport offered in the spring. If you would like more information about rugby, email southeasternrugby@gmail.com. The coaches and staff are ready to answer your questions and welcome your children to the sport. Sign ups will be available in January 2014 on the S.P.O.R.T.S website at hsesports.org for second, third and fourth grade flag rugby; fifth/sixth, seventh/eighth and high school boys; and eighth through 12th girls teams.

| Neal G. Moore She was a good student at Delta High School in Delaware County. She was an excellent speller, had a great vocabulary and wasn’t struggling with poor grades. But something wasn’t quite right with Lauren Dybwad, now 19, and a freshman at the University of Indianapolis. “I didn’t like to read,” Lauren recalled. “I didn’t like being called on in classes.” And the hours Lauren spent doing homework were piling up, sometimes until 2 am.

number grids as well as memory games like tic-tac-toe with a math twist. Within weeks, Lauren’s reading comprehension improved significantly, and she was participating in classes. Indeed, the training was so successful, she was valedictorian of her high school graduating class and received a full college scholarship. “Don’t feel like you can’t change. There’s always help for you,” Lauren advised. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

Mom and dad believe the investment of time (driving from Muncie) and money was more than worthwhile. “The most valuable thing we ever did was bring Lauren to LearningRx. There’s no “Whether you or someone you know question about it,” Steve said.

The problem? Lauren wasn’t visualizing the words and concepts on the pages of textbooks. “It never dawned on us that she had a reading problem,” explained her father, Steve Dybwad.

A chance conversation led the family struggles with learning, or you’re looking Lynne McCauley noted that there to LearningRx, a brain training to be faster, smarter and more efficient are enormous long-term benefits for center that helps adults and children students like Lauren. “We are able improve how they process, recall and in a competitive world, brain training is to improve the strength, accuracy retain information. “Brain training a solid investment for anyone.” and efficiency of a student’s thinking is a simple but powerful way to ability by fine-tuning how the brain enhance a student’s core ability assimilates, processes, combines, stores and retrieves to learn faster, easier and better,” said Lynne McCauley, information and outputs that information as knowledge executive director of LearningRx. “Our brains are like or learning. It’s their most important ‘computer’ while in muscles. They function better when all of our ‘intelligence college,” she smiled. “Whether you or someone you know muscles’ – memory, auditory and visual processing, struggles with learning, or you’re looking to be faster, attention and speed – are equal in strength and working smarter and more efficient in a competitive world, brain together well.” training is a solid investment for anyone.” The Dybwads drove Lauren to LearningRx’s Geist office for one-to-one training three hours a week over 12 weeks. Another three hours of home instruction each week helped reinforce training strategies. Steve conceded that he was skeptical at first. “But what Lynne was explaining to us made sense. We decided to give it a try.” Lauren’s transformation started with visualization exercises. She was instructed to create an imaginary white board in her mind and to “place” items on it that she encountered while reading. The purpose was to develop her visualization skills to help strengthen her ability to “see” what she was reading, associate it with auditory information and then transfer it to longterm memory. Other tasks included visual pattern and number cards used to match similar shapes and remember and manipulate NOVEMBER 2013
