CREATIVES DARYE & DIJA HENRY FULFILLING THEIR LIVES BY PURSUING THEIR INTERESTS

Darye and Dija Henry follow their hearts, dreams and passions.

This dynamic couple understands that, at their core, they are creative beings. When they met at Purdue, Darye played guitar and piano while majoring in computer science. Dija started as an engineering major.

“I was auditioning for plays in the evening and realized I was conflicted with my career path,” shares Dija. She changed her majors to theater and kinesiology which made sense after 10 years of gymnastics and athletic training. Dija also earned an accidental minor in English.

The two married shortly after graduation. Through their journey together, Dija and Darye have encouraged one another to express their creative sides. They both come from very talented genetic pools. Both sides share a love of the arts with special emphasis on music, writing and acting.

It hasn’t always been easy for Dija to express her creativity while balancing being a mom raising three children. At a low point, she

experienced a breakthrough. Surrounded by her kids while she lay on the bathroom floor with postpartum depression, she realized others must feel the same way she did with struggling to balance motherhood, creativity and work.

At this pivotal moment, Darye, who is founder of Reborn Code, encouraged his wife to express her heart through a creative outlet.

Darye set her up with a laptop and a flip cam and introduced her to YouTube. She started blogging. Once she started, she didn’t stop. Dija was one of the first vloggers (video bloggers) to begin writing skits and filming them, then posting to YouTube. She found her muse which was the balance of honoring her inner creative self as well as being a mom and a wife. Dija got her groove back by becoming a Creative Lifestyle Blogger.

“We are creative beings,” shares Dija. “It is my hope to inspire other creatives in honoring themselves and their talents.”

Darye is a musician at heart with the piano or a guitar never far from his grasp. Their children are encouraged to explore a wide variety of interests. The Henrys tout themselves as a “STEAM” household: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

“I am so happy for Darye,” states Dija. “He released another album at the beginning of November, realizing a dream of his.” The EP is called “Prophets and Jesters.”

The film placed well among the competition, earning Best Actor and Best Score nominations.

“Reggie McGuire and I produced the film,” says Dija. “And it was directed by Kindari of Verexia Studies. We are excited it was so well received!”

Dija starred in a short film that premiered in Los Angeles at the end of last summer. “Moving Still” “Our children are all talented beings,” says is a short film made for the 168 Film Project.

Darye. “We encourage them to pursue their interests and hope to cultivate them into their own balance.” Dija adds, “We try to include them in our projects whether it’s coming with me to a filming, acting with me or hanging with daddy while he records music or rehearses. We make sure that creativity is a family affair. I always teach the kids how important it is to stay creative and use their minds to make up games or invent new ways of doing things. I think it’s a life skill!”

As Hamilton Southeastern Schools and the Peyton Riekhof Foundation for Youth Hope prepares to put on its third annual Mental Health Awareness and Education Program, they have a renewed focus and energy.

Powered by a newly formed Fishers Mental Health Task Force, the Fishers community has a potent weapon in the fight to end suicides. After riding with police officers one day, Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness asked law enforcement officials what they felt was the biggest challenge or problem they faced.

The number one recurring issue was figuring out how to have the resources to serve people with mental illness and substance use disorder. It was then that Fadness decided to build a team of experts to tackle the issue. To round out his dream team, Mayor Fadness brought in public safety leaders, school administrators, faith-based

organizations, government leaders and healthcare organizations like Community Health Network. Meeting monthly, the task force has identified the community’s needs and issues and are now ready to take action.

In the past year, the task force has worked hard to do things like establish a mental health training program for use in all Fishers public safety departments, established a follow-up care protocol for mental health patients and create a community wide communications campaign to bring awareness to the issue and lessen the stigma surrounding it.

Though the task force works together as a team, Suzanne Clifford, Vice President of Integrated Primary Care for Community Health Network, credits one team member for his special place in the group. “Mike Riekhof is really the heart of our team. He’s had a tragedy in his life, but he’s used it to save other kids,” Clifford explains.

There will be more than 15 different organizations available before and after the program to provide materials and resources. This is the 3rd annual mental health awareness program for hope, help and community.

DEPRESSION WARNING SIGNS If you or a loved one experiences these symptoms, you may need to seek help: • Sadness • Anxiety • Feelings of emptiness • Hopelessness • Guilt • Irritability • Restlessness • Feelings of helplessness • Feeling worthless MENTAL HEALTH FAST FACTS • A suicide occurs every 40 seconds, making mental health and substance abuse a national and global crisis.

• In Indiana, for people ages 15-24, suicide is the second leading cause of death, making Indiana’s suicide deaths higher than the number of homicides.

• In 2014, there is a suicide attempt nationally every 30 seconds.

• Nationally, there are three suicide attempts by females to every one attempt by a male.

BEHAVIORAL CHANGES • The following changes in behavior may signal depression: • Loss of interest in regular activities • Lack of energy • Difficulty concentrating, remembering information or making decisions • Problems sleeping, too little or too much • Changes in appetite, too much or too little • Thoughts of suicide • Chronic aches, pains, headaches, stomach cramps or other digestive problems that do not go away

Riekhof lost his 18-year-old daughter, Peyton, in July 2013 to depression and has vowed ever since to help prevent suicide. “Do I like that I have a story? No, absolutely not. I wish I didn’t have a story. But if I can use my story to help others and warn others in the community, that’s my mission in life,” Riekhof says.

Saving lives and improving lives is the goal of both the Fishers Mental Health Task Force and Community Health Network’s initiative. “If one child, one spouse or one friend can be saved, then this is all worth it,” Clifford adds.

To that end, The Peyton Riekhof Foundation for Youth Hope along with HSE Parents in Partnership have announced their third annual mental health awareness program for hope, help and community. Mother-daughter team Sarah and Karen Wood are this year’s special guests.

They present “A Story of Hope: A Family’s Journey Through Depression" Monday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fishers High School Auditorium. The program is free to everyone in the community.

Following the Wood’s compelling story, an expert panel is on hand for a discussion and question and answer session. Also available are 15 different mental health organizations. Their tables will be open with staff available to answer questions and provide resources before and after the program.

The 2014 and 2015 programs were very successful with packed houses for the presentation by Canadian comedian Kevin Breel who shared his story of his experience with depression. Please come out, show your support and help us raise awareness and save lives.

Listening to the National Anthem is standard procedure at games, regardless of the sport. For hockey, who sings this is as important and as heartfelt as the mascot and the team itself. For the Indy Fuel, they selected Purdue Glee Club alum Eric Wickens as their Official Voice of the National Anthem.

Wickens has been singing for most of his life. His vocal career started with his grade school choir, then on to the Purdue Glee Club. As an adult, he has worked with Community Civic Theater and eventually auditioned with the Indianapolis Opera. After eight seasons with the Opera chorus, he felt led in the direction of singing the National Anthem, given his larger-than-life voice.

The first time Wickens sang the National Anthem was at a Purdue Women’s Basketball game. One of his collegiate advisors was a strong sponsor of the women’s basketball program and suggested to Wickens to perform in Mackey Arena to the crowd. Wickens enjoyed it, yet a decade would pass before he would do an encore performance of the National Anthem.

Computer programmer by day, National Anthem singer by night, Wickens balances his creative and artistic sense through his music.

Wickens recently release a CD, titled “Comfort.” The CD showcases his classical roots.

Hockey teams are obsessive about their traditions, as in most sports. As an affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks, the Indy Fuel embrace the concept of creating traditions. Wickens’ role with the Indy Fuel replicates that of Jim Cornelison with the Blackhawks.

Cornelison has been the Official Voice of the Chicago Blackhawks for over seven years.

“Working with the Indy Fuel has been a wonderful, unique opportunity,” shares Wickens. “Being the Official Voice for the Indy Fuel by performing the National Anthem bridges arts and sports.”

In previous years, the Women, Wine & Shoes event has been the toast of the town when it comes to feeding chronically hungry children through Gleaners BackSacks Weekend Food for Kids program. Last year’s fundraiser hosted 400 guests, targeting high income women aged 30-55+ and has raised nearly $200,000 annually to fund the Gleaners program.

What woman could possibly resist a hunky man who knows the difference between a wedge and a platform pump? The Shoe GuysTM are one of the highlights of a WW&S® event. These attractive, fit and friendly guys may look like models, but they are men from the community who support the cause and are willing to brave a

party full of women.

Jill Schuman, co-chair of the event, spoke about the collaborative efforts that go into organizing this incredible event and the purpose that continues to motivate her and her co-chairs.

“We have been thrilled with the previous years’ success,” Schuman said. “It all began when Gleaners pitched the idea of teaming up with Wine, Women & Shoes, enjoying a day with our girlfriends shopping, eating and wine tasting while raising money for a good cause. It is a relaxing and enjoyable midday event that is designed to be different from a typical black-tie evening gala.”

Schuman mentioned that guests will be able to experience a wide selection of wines and delectable foods from local sponsors and restaurants. There will be 10 local vendors and restaurants on-site. As another way to raise money that day, the vendors will donate back 20 percent of the purchases made by the attendees. They will also be able to participate in a variety of contests, and the most incredible raffle prize is a key to a magnificent wardrobe closet, constructed on-site by California Closets and filled with over $12,000 of merchandise, gift certificates and other incredible prizes donated by the 10 vendors at the event.

There will be 160 tickets sold at $160 per ticket, and at the end of the event, the lucky ticket holder will take home all of the prizes and the opportunity to have California Closets come to their home and build a custom closet. In the closet are hidden boxes with additional prizes such as a certificate to purchase a pair of designer shoes with the assistance of a personal shopper at Saks Fifth Avenue at the Keystone Fashion Mall and other elaborate and fun gifts.

“This year’s event will feature the Saks Fashion Lounge,” Schuman added. “There will be a bar and music in this area.

We will have a live auction with some incredible donated items, and we will have a presentation for our guests on the Gleaners BackSacks Weekend Food for Kids program and how the event and all of its components supports Gleaners. We will also have a ‘Fund a Need’ segment. There will be several photo opps and fun contests such as ‘Best Shoes’ and ‘Best in Dress.’”

Schuman also expressed that one of the more unique and entertaining parts about the event is the presence of their Shoe Guys.

“Our Shoe Guys are absolutely phenomenal,” she said. “We will have ‘shoe cards’ with each of their faces printed on the cards. Our guests will vote for their

favorite Shoe Guy, voting through the Gleaners website during the event. They can donate as little as a dollar or whatever amount that they wish. Whichever Shoe Guy wins the most votes will be honored and recognized on stage and is awarded some fun gifts. here’s an exciting new trend among expecting families called gender reveal parties. If you’re asking yourself, “What’s a gender reveal party?” then you either don’t know anyone who’s expecting, you aren’t expecting or you live under a rock.

A gender reveal party is a party to find out the gender of an expecting couple’s baby. Generally, gender reveal parties lie somewhere between the pregnancy

announcement and the baby shower.

Thanks to social media, this trend is exploding with some good and bad reviews, but it’s a trend that is not going anywhere any time soon.

Who is doing it? A lot of people. Gender reveal parties started popping up around 2011 with a simple cake you could cut into to find out reveal the baby’s gender: blue for boy and pink for girl. and even the whole world.

Celebrities like Snooki, Dave Annable and Carrie Underwood, just to name a few, revealed their baby’s gender on national television or video to not only tell their families but the entire world. Other celebrities have used gender reveals on their Instagram and other social media pages.

If you are invited to a gender reveal party, you should expect food and games, maybe even together. Be prepared to have some

cookies or cupcakes either pink, blue or some neutral color. Games often include guessing the gender of what you think the baby might be, predicting the day of birth or learning old wives’ tales of boys versus girls.

Finally, the reveal — is it a boy or a girl? If you are thinking of bringing a gift, it’s not necessary (unless it’s a shower and gender reveal in one).

Thinking of throwing one? Let your sonographer know ahead of time that’s the plan, but you can always know and keep it a secret too. Bring an envelope if you don’t want to know and ask the sonographer to put the gender inside. At that point, you can give the envelope to a trusted friend or family member or give it directly to your baker/party planner.

Norman Burns II, the new President and CEO of Conner Prairie, takes the helm at an exciting time.

With 28 years of experience in leadership roles at historic institutions around the country, Burns and his wife Sandy are embracing their new adventure with Conner Prairie.

Originally from Tennessee, the Burns feel at home in Indiana and are arriving at the beginning of a year-long Bicentennial Celebration for our 200 years of Indiana statehood.

“I am excited for the opportunity to be here at this time,” shares Burns. His experience includes being a part of the Bicentennial celebration in Tennessee, a Bicentennial of the southwest territory and the 400th celebration of the founding of Jamestown.

Burns clearly understands the impact that these events have on the awareness of history. “This is what we do at Conner Prairie every day,” says Burns. “We celebrate history."

“We are using Indiana’s Bicentennial celebration to share the story of Indiana’s story of territory to statehood,” says Conner Prairie VP and COO Cathy Ferree.

While the Bicentennial will be celebrated throughout Conner Prairie, a main feature of the Bicentennial celebration will take place at the Conner House. Beginning March 26, guests will be invited to enter from the front of the Conner House, facing the prairie, instead of the rear of the home.

The interactive experience will transport guests back in time to explore what might have happened in the home during the era of statehood infancy.

“The interactive, dramatic story about what happened here in the Conner House will be shared in a new way,” shares Ferree. “The Conner House is more than a structure.

We want guests to experience the story of who lived here, what was happening

in the community around it and how is it important today.”

The restoration and reinterpretation of the Conner House at Conner Prairie is designated an official Indiana Bicentennial Legacy Project. The Conner House shaped Indiana’s history, for it was a meeting held in that very house that changed the location of the state capital of Indiana.

“Two hundred years ago, William Conner arrived as a fur trapper. He fought in the War of 1812 and witnessed Indiana’s transition from territory to statehood,” says Ferree. “Trapper, trader to gentleman and statesmen, Conner left a legacy. Over the years, his home bustled with visitors discussing legislation. The home served as a cultural hub where big ideas were stretched and pulled.”

In addition to the Bicentennial celebration, Conner Prairie is introducing a new experience for their guests, Treetop Outpost, opening July 1. For the past five years, Conner Prairie has introduced nature programming as a unique lens on history.

Treetop Outpost is a culmination of these efforts and supports Conner Prairie’s mission to inspire curiosity and foster family learning.

“We started asking questions such as, ‘How can we help kids get more wild?’ Wouldn’t it be wild if we gave them an outdoor space where they could connect with their parents in nature?” says Ferree. “Imaginations are kindled like a wildfire. It’s not about taking away gadgets – it’s about captivating imaginations.”

What do Fishers High School twosport standout Zach Eaton and current NBA star Mike Conley have in common?

Quite a lot as high school players, according to Fishers coach Joe Leonard who coached Conley — now a starting guard point guard for the NBA Memphis Grizzlies — when he played at Lawrence North.

“I’m not comparing Zach with Conley necessarily in terms of statistics or talent, so much as I am in Zach simply being such a tremendous leader," the coach said this season. “Conley was a great leader….But I’ll tell you, though, Zach is really something special….And we may never see another leader like Zach Eaton."

That’s quite a statement, quite a compliment for sure.

And what did Zach say when he heard about that comparison?

Well….his eyes lit up. Maybe not basketball size, but there was no mistaking he was feeling pretty good.

Zach is Mr. Energy. Instant Energy if you will – both on the football field where he enjoyed a great deal of success as quarterback the past two seasons and on the basketball court where he’s been handling the ball and delivering crisp, money-in-the-bank passes since he started dressing with the varsity late in his freshman season.

Eaton, a leader extraordinaire, said that one of his proudest moments came this year when he became the school’s assist leader in basketball.

“When I came in as a freshman, that was one goal I set for myself."

Zach also came into 2016 leading Hamilton County in 3-point field goal percentage on 7-of-12 accuracy, and he was second in assists, averaging 5.0.

In football last season, Zach was a co-QB on an All-County football team and was among the leaders in passing for years.

He’s quite a young man, and there’s no mistaking his charismatic manner and persona. He makes his presence felt in many ways, and at times, he’s Mr. Rah Rah, like a cheerleader in sports gear.

During football games, the 6-foot, 195-pounder is known to run behind the team bench high-stepping and raising his helmet high while constantly adding encouragement to a very boisterous student cheer block.

On the basketball court, he dances up and down the hardwood with a special spring in his step and gleam in his eye. He high-fives his teammates, pats them on the rumps and shouts encouragement, no matter what the occasion or circumstance might be.

There’s simply no quit in Zach Eaton.

He possesses an energetic, outgoing, extroverted and entertaining side, and he’s able to express himself in a positive, determined and always confident manner.

“I get so excited that I can’t talk because my stomach gets so tight, and I start to feel sick, which makes me gag — and then I go right back to being fine."

A little cocky, perhaps?

When asked what sport he likes the best, he smiled and said without hesitation, “All the sports I play."

No, not really, he says with a big smile. “I’m sure some might think so," he said flashing a grin. “I’m very excitable. I like to get my teammates and the crowd going. That’s my role as a leader. I do whatever is necessary to help the guys raise their game and to help the team….to help us win."

He gets very excited before his own games as well as when he attends Colts, Pacers or Butler games.

The one thing most people don’t know about him is that he often gags before those games.

“It’s a gag reflex," he said, matter-of-factly.

Boyd joined the All-Star League when she was in third grade and continued throughout the remainder of her schooling, all the while balancing her clubs, organizations and grades.

Boyd took a wide variety of advanced courses, such as AP U.S. History, AP Calculus, ACP Government and ACP Composition, which helped her earn her 4.13 GPA. She was also a part of National Honor Society, Drama Club and choir. But in the midst of it all, Boyd made time for her teammates.

Boyd joined the varsity boys basketball cheerleading squad as a freshman and held her place there her entire high school career. Over the course of time, teammates came and went – but Boyd stuck around.

Zach’s effervescent, ‘can-do’ attitude and spirit likely can be attributed to his family genes.

His late grandfather, Chris Theofanis, who passed away in 1999, was involved with Butler University for 44 years. He was known as “Mr. Butler" by many. He always had a smile and was a true gentleman that the media enjoyed getting to know.

He served as the Butler Athletics Public Relations Director, and he was a great promoter of high school and college basketball.

The girls spent multiple hours together a week, whether it be for games or a practice. After countless hours together, the girls developed friendships that made the team strong as a whole.

“We all grow super close through away games and tournaments,” Boyd said. “I’ve been cheering with a lot of these girls all through high school, so we’re comfortable around each other.”

“My grandfather passed away when I was very young, but yes, I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about him, and everyone knew and loved him," Zach said.

Zach’s grandfather’s brother, the late George Theofanis, coached Indianapolis Shortridge back in the heydays of Indiana high school basketball, and he led the school to the state runner-up basketball championship at Hinkle Fieldhouse in 1968. He also was a standout basketball player at Indianapolis Washington.

George Theofanis followed the legendary Tony Hinkle as Butler University’s basketball coach from 1970-78.

Talk about being a Butler Family. It is still the Butler Way for the Eatons.

Zach is the son of Joe and Florie Eaton. Joe Eaton, Partner at Barnes & Thornburg LLP law firm, played football at Butler. Florie also studied at Butler.

Zach’s sister Kailey plays tennis at Butler where her grandfather graduated in 1952.

Kailey also played No. 1 singles all four years at Fishers HS.

During the recent renovation of Hinkle Fieldhouse, the family contributed to a plaque that is part of the walking tour of Hinkle. The plaque honoring Chris and George is inside Gate 4.

So is Zach headed for Butler? Well, yeah!

Also, Zach was the Academic Student of the Year at Riverside Junior High. He’s in the National Honor Society, and he’s a member of the Student-Athletic Council. That group discusses sports and athletics in general and what they can do to make things better for athletics in general.

Though he’s had some offers to play football at some Div. III schools, Zach recently made a decision to hang up his cleats and attend Butler University.

Other than his accomplishments in basketball, there’s one last goal still out there for him and his teammates. Yep….Winning the SECTIONAL!

Zach said he “loves Butler," and his parents said they cannot argue with his logic!

“We beat [highly-ranked] North Central in a first-round sectional game last year, and we came close to reaching the sectional title game, losing to eventual champion Carmel in two overtimes in a semifinal.

There was no family pressure. Zach simply decided to follow his heart and add to the family tradition.

In addition to high school sports, Zach has been quite a success in the classroom. He carries a 3.75 GPA and is thinking about a possible career in marketing.
