HSE Schools District Election Results HSE School District – Voters Say “Yes” to Construction | Whitney Mucha The 2013 Special Election was held on May 7, 2013, for the purpose of voting on the HSE School District Referendum requesting to issue bonds or enter into a lease to finance the expansion and related improvements of Fishers High School and HSE High School. A total of 6,359 voters cast their ballots on Election Day. The resulting vote was 67.87% voting yes and 32.13% voting no. A detailed Referenda Summary Report can be found at www.hamiltoncounty.in.gov. Now that the HSE School District has been given the green light to move forward with the expansion and related improvements of Fishers High School and HSE High School, the next phase of the design-build process begins. Design-build is an alternative to the design-bidbuild method of construction. CSO Architects will design the project to 50% completion likely from now until September, at which point a design-build team will be selected to finish the design phase, and begin and complete construction. This team will consist of architects, engineers, and contractors who will work collaboratively to ensure the best construction outcomes by focusing on efficiency, cost savings, faster delivery with fewer problems, and developing innovative results in the final products. Mike Reuter, chief financial officer of HSE School District, said, “Our most recent build of the HSE Junior High on Cyntheanne Road was built using the design-build process. It was the largest public design-build project in Indiana. We were very pleased with the process and look forward to using it again for the expansions of both high schools.” The district estimates that construction will begin sometime

The HSE School District is planning the necessary space needs at both high schools by providing space that will support a shift in instruction to include more 21st century learning. The focus will continue to be on preparing our students for success as they move to post-secondary education. As the HSE School District looks to the future, let’s pause and reflect on the current success of our schools. The U.S. News & World Report released their 2013 rankings for best high schools, and Fishers High School and HSE High School ranked in the top 10 high schools in Indiana and received national rankings. Additional information on outstanding high schools in the country can be found at www.usnews.com/education/besthigh-schools.

The new additions at HSE High School will allow those students who would have attended the Freshman Center to move back to HSE High School. As a result, the Freshman Center will be converted back to a middle grade building.

Because the district’s elementary enrollment numbers have stabilized, Reuter anticipates this construction should take care of the space needed for our current K–12 students for the next 10 years – barring unusual circumstances that may arise. “As a result of tight operating funds, we can afford only to open new space just in time for the arrival of the students into their respective grades,” Reuter said. “Fishers High School will be operating with 4 portable classrooms in the 2013-2014 school year and with 8 portable classrooms in the 2014–2015 school year.” In August of 2015, the need for those portables at Fishers High School will be eliminated.

in October or November of this year and continue until a target completion date in June of 2015. The new additions are scheduled to open for the August, 2015, school year. Reuter also noted that the only construction that has already begun is on the bus parking lot at Fishers High School. He said, “This parking lot construction was necessary now to provide a staging area for future construction at that location.”

Fishers Weddings With the beginning of June comes wedding season. As a wedding planner, I love the excitement that the summer brings – especially the joy of a wedding. Weddings found me; becoming a wedding planner combined everything I loved. I was able to become an entrepreneur, plan amazing events, help brides, and work in an industry that advocated something very dear to my heart – marriage!
| Natalie Love
One of my favorite parts of the wedding planning process is the dynamic of bringing together a group of wedding professionals who work together to create a beautiful day. For many couples, however, this is the most stressful part. They don’t know where to go to find vendors or they are inundated with the multitude available. Living in an amazing town like Fishers, there are so many great resources available.

The Hawthornes will be celebrating their 20th anniversary next year. They have a classic ballroom that is available to rent to the general public for wedding ceremonies and receptions. Weddings at The Hawthornes are managed by Kelly Letzer. Kelly has been in the event-planning business for 9 years, and she loves working with clients to create customized menus and seeing them enjoy their event. The Hawthornes is a full-service catering venue with an elegant and personalized ballroom with windows overlooking the golf course. They also provide an outdoor ceremony location with gorgeous landscaping. Kelly says she enjoys personalizing each event and tailoring the menu, décor, and the planning process to suit the couple’s style. While Kelly experiences many weddings each year, the moment that brings tears to her eyes almost every time is the father of the bride’s welcome speech. “It’s always so incredibly endearing to hear the father speak about how proud of his little girl he is at that moment.” Kelly has one piece of advice for brides: “Relax, trust your professionals, and enjoy every moment of your special day – it goes by so quickly!”
McNamara Florist .

I went to talk with Amy Alexander, the wedding contact at McNamara – on Allisonville Road between 116th and 126th Streets. Amy has 30 years of floral experience, and the McNamara design department staff has upwards of 25 years of experience. Amy loves the creative challenge of pulling together beautiful floral designs considering the budget, colors, and style of each bride. McNamara’s provides everything from small orders, like bouquets and boutonnieres, to large $40,000 wedding orders. At McNamara, you will find personal service in a small shop combined with the access to a wide range of resources of a large corporation. Amy advises brides to know their wedding colors, book their venue, and choose their dress before going to the floral appointment. Amy notes that it is alright for a bride to not know much about flowers, but she encourages them to research and look around to find what they do and don’t like. “Don’t just pick the first thing you see and say, ‘That’ll do!’” June 2013

www.SimplyPerfectionCakes.com simplyperfectioncakes@gmail.com Rose, the owner of Simply Perfection Cakes, has a great cake studio in her home open by appointment only. When you walk in, you are welcomed by the sweet smell of cake. In 2008, Rose lost her job. With the encouragement of her children, she started her own business making and decorating cakes. Rose offers free tastings and consultations to all brides so they can taste a variety of the cakes and fillings she has before booking. She makes both buttercream- and fondanticed wedding cakes as well as cupcakes. Simply Perfection Cakes is a boutique bakery, and Rose tries to give each of her customers the personal touch. She takes the bride from the design stage through the delivery and set up of the cake. Rose uses only the best ingredients producing a very flavorful, moist, delicious cake with a long list of “to die for” homemade fillings.
AMS Indiana .
www.AMSIndiana.com jason@amsindiana.com AMS is an entertainment company that has been in business since 1984. Indiana owner Jason Ryan has been with the company for almost 10 years. Weddings have always been the main focus of their business. They encourage their clients to think outside the box and they help them create a uniquely-defined event based on their style. They meet with their clients to get to know them and understand their vision. AMS Indiana is a one-stop shop for your entertainment needs: DJ, MC, karaoke, photo booths, event lighting, game shows, video slideshows, audio/visual rentals, and casino parties. Being a father to two girls, Jason personally loves the fatherdaughter dance. “I can relate to what that father must be feeling looking into the eyes of his baby girl on the happiest day of her life.” Jason recommends meeting with your DJ prior to booking him/her to make sure that person can direct your event and keep the guests moving. “In our industry, you truly get what you pay for.” He says to make sure that they have backup systems in place for both the DJ and equipment. Make sure they are properly insured. You want your wedding to be about you and not your DJ. Natalie is the owner of Events By Love, a full service wedding planning boutique in Fishers. Five years old and ashamed: How LearningRx transformed a kindergartner’s self image | Neal Moore
eather Koenig did what responsible moms do when their children are struggling in school: she went looking for a solution. Her daughter, Alexandra, was falling behind; her young mind filling with self-doubt and shame. “I was on the Internet and saw an advertisement for LearningRx,” recalled Koenig. “Alex was in kindergarten at the time and I knew something was going on. LearningRx intrigued me. It sounded like the perfect thing.”
H
At school and home, Alex was experiencing a kind of data disconnect. She would listen as her teacher or gymnastics coach rattled off instructions, but then finish only part of a task. This processing malfunction led to confusion, followed by embarrassment and “acting out” in class. “I was mixed up,” remembered seven-year-old Alex. Heather made an appointment to have Alex evaluated, and during the follow-up meeting with LearningRx Executive Director Lynne McCauley, learned that her distracted daughter had an auditory processing disorder. “It’s different than autism. She wasn’t processing verbal instructions correctly,” explained Koenig. “You go in nervous, and when you find it can be fixed it’s a huge relief.” “Many kids struggle with auditory processing issues,” explained McCauley. “The ear has to hear sounds correctly, of course, but what is the brain doing with that sound as an electrical impulse? Does it discern the difference between sounds? If not, the words rad-red-rid can all seem the same.” Inefficiencies or inaccuracies in how the brain is handling such sounds can overwhelm a child’s ability to keep up with the pace that the sounds are coming, and they zone out or shut down and miss information. “Kind of like overloading your computer at home,” said McCauley. “So, it can look like the child’s not paying attention, when really it’s information overload.”
learning how to focus in a noisy, potentially distracting environment. One of her tasks included adding columns of numbers out loud, on beat, within a certain time frame. “They walk around chirping numbers, reproducing an over-stimulated environment to helps kids learn to tune out distractions and focus on the task or information,” explained Koenig. Since completing her LearningRx brain training, and incorporating the brain training principles into school work at home, Alex’s classroom performance at Hoosier Academy has improved dramatically. “The teacher now knows she gets the full set of instructions,” said her mother. “The skills were already there, she just needed to get to them. The one thing I wanted for her was to not feel embarrassed or ashamed by ‘failure’. I didn’t want her labeled.” “There’s a lot to be said for a mother’s instinct,” offered McCauley. “If you suspect there’s a learning issue, bring your child in for an evaluation. When kids struggle day after day, and no matter what they do or try, the situation doesn’t change or improve, they start to lose motivation to keep trying.” What typically develops are confidence and self esteem issues, and a sense of dread about going to school or sitting down to homework. “By identifying the underlying cause of the learning problem, you can identify the right solution and give your child the tools to be happier and more successful at school, at home and in everyday activities like sports and extracurricular activities,” said McCauley. “Who doesn’t want that for their child?” Neal Moore has over 30 years of media and communications experience, including TV news anchoring and reporting in Indianapolis. For more information, visit www.NealMoore.com.
McCauley noted that parents come to LearningRx not for a Band-Aid, but a permanent fix. “About 80 percent of learning problems are caused by inefficiencies in how the brain actually processes information – things like memory and attention,” said McCauley. “In as little as ninety minutes, we can pinpoint the underlying cause and create a customized brain training solution that puts people on the path to easier faster learning.” Alex’s action plan included several 90-minute sessions for 12 weeks with LearningRx cognitive skills trainers,

Toilet Troubles?
Nobody likes to talk about it but it can be one of the biggest aggravations in your home: a toilet that won’t flush. As the amount of water per flush has been reduced, some toilets simply can’t handle it. TOTO can. TOTO was designing low volume flushing systems years before they were required and they continue to maintain flushing tests more rigorous than industry standards for true one flush performance and water savings. With three different flushing technologies you can count on TOTO to flush it all down the first time, every time. Visit our showroom and learn more. Say good by to toilet troubles with TOTO. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve had a rather slow feeling lately – especially when it comes to the internet. Every time I hop online, I get an irresistible desire to move to Kansas City, or think about how nice Austin might be, or perhaps head even farther west and land in Provo. Why abandon the great life my family and I have here in Fishers and strike out for these seemingly random destinations? Well, other than easy access to barbeque or being in walking distance of SXSW or maybe skiing in the Wasatch, it’s because these three cities have something that we – or any other cities in the nation – do not. Specifically, they are the lucky initial recipients of what may just be internet nirvana: real high-speed internet access. Roughly a year ago, Google started rolling out Google Fiber, their project designed to offer 1GBs data speeds to residential homes. Now, for those of you wondering just what that means, GBs is a data transmission measurement meaning Gigabit per second which equates to 1,024 Megabits per second (Mbps) the way we are accustomed to measuring our internet speeds. To complete the number-crunching exercise, the most recent statistics show that the US average internet speed is a glacial 7.4 Mbps while the highest-speed package offered by Comcast clocks in at a plodding 50 Mbps, 20 times slower than what the good people of Kansas City have on hand. Now, this isn’t meant as an advertisement for Google Fiber (though I’d sign up in a heartbeat if I could). It’s more as a “get ready” message to all of us – real high speed is coming; and when it gets here, it’s going to open up a wealth of opportunities for use in the home. A few months ago, I wrote about alternatives to cable using various internet-streaming devices. The one drawback to all of the solutions that I mentioned is the speed of the internet connection. When “the pipe” slows down, video gets choppy and the picture degrades – something that isn’t a problem when you’re operating in the speed stratosphere that a Gigabit connection can offer. In fact, such speed can allow you to have multiple Hi-Def streams running at the same time – even while your kids have hijacked your iPads and are Skyping and watching YouTube. Services like Netflix offer the promise of 1080p movies, while the telecommuter can access video conferencing that remains a rarity outside the more technologically-advanced offices. While the above advances are great, they are only improvements to services we already have. Just as these services popped up when we made the move from dial-up to cable internet, new opportunities will follow in the wake of this next leap in speed.
These problems will get sorted out though. Gigabit-capable equipment is beginning to come to market, and market rollouts are moving forward. Fishers isn’t yet – that we know of – on the shortlist for deployment. However, sooner or later, it will be; and when we do get it, well, it’s going to be fun. For now though, I’m going to start shopping for a new laptop and planning A LOT of vacations in Kansas City. Sean Mulroy has worked in the technology industry even longer than the 8 years he and his family have lived in Fishers.

A Need for Speed
Now, all is not rainbows and unicorns when we look at Gigabit internet. For starters, it’s not available to almost anyone in the US; Google’s rollout has been slow – only Kansas City is up and running and, even then, only in certain areas. Provo isn’t slated to come online until late this year, and Austin won’t see the service until 2014. AT&T has committed to offering the same speeds and services – but only in Austin (again with Texas!) so far, and they haven’t given any specific dates or locations as yet. Second is the equipment – only the most recent laptops have the capability of processing Gigabit speed, and only the very latest WiFi equipment can get in range (but not reach) of the full throughput needed to offer a full Gigabit. Plus, as you might imagine, very few other internet appliances were designed to handle these kinds of speeds.

Does Your Beer Tell a Story? | Clark A. Edwards hen the publisher called and said, “Hey! I have a story about beer. Are you interested?” I replied, “When? Where? How? You name it, I’ll be there!” In full disclosure, I am a fan of beer.
W
I arranged for a meeting with James Printz, Sales Division Manager for World Class Beer. James has recently
moved to Fishers from Kansas. Rarely do I meet someone with so much passion for their line of work. From the moment we sat down, I could tell that James has a true passion for all things beer. Now I know what many of you might be thinking right now: “Big deal! I love beer too!” I am here to tell you it is different with James. Not only does he know the history of beer itself, he is dedicated to helping craft breweries tell their story, build their
brands, and ultimately gain market share. Let me give you an idea of what we (James and I) are talking about when we say market share for craft beer. Nationally, craft beer makes up 6.5% of all beer sales. In Indiana, we are talking about 4.5%. That 2% gap equates to about 4 million cases. James and World Class Beer are dedicated to helping fill that gap and telling the story of craft beer. JUNE 2013

barley. It is labor intensive and ultimately produces a high-quality beer that, in most cases, amounts to smaller quantities; in some cases, very small quantities.
World Class Taster James Printz moves to Fishers So you might be asking yourself right now what is craft beer and how does it tell a story. Craft beer is not your buy-it-by-the-30-pack-and-guzzle-itat-the-track-or-the-lake kind of beer. Craft beer is made from high-quality raw materials including fine hops and
Let’s talk about how craft beer tells a story. One example James shared with me is when the British occupied India; the British soldiers wanted their English beer. With no breweries in India, they had to ship the beer to India from the British Isles. In order to keep it preserved, they threw hops on top
of the barrels. As the barrels traveled around the horn of Africa and up to India on a journey of 6-8 weeks, they took on a wonderful hoppy flavor that was a big hit with the soldiers. Upon arriving home, they wanted their local breweries to produce what they called an India Pale Ale; and that is what we still call it today. Another great story comes from hundreds of years ago in England. When two people were to become betrothed, they were required to drink Mead (which is made from honey) for a full cycle of the moon or 30 days. This is where the term honeymoon comes from. Now let’s talk about how we can experience our own stories from craft beer today. When I travel, I don’t go into a bar and sit down and ask for a mass-produced, dime-a-dozen beer. The first thing I ask the bartender is, “What local beers do you have on

tap?” From this, I have my own stories that include drinking a Golden Spike Wheat at 8000 feet in Park City, Utah, at the top of the lift. Another great memory is having a great rack of ribs on the Red Arrow Highway in Michigan and drinking a 22-ounce Oberon from Bell’s for $4. The coldest, most refreshing beer memory I ever remember having involves a Paulaner Hefe-Weizen while sitting on a patio with my family on Catalina Island. There are many large brewery beers I have had on the back patio with friends. However, taking the time to sit, sip, and enjoy a truly quality craft beer is from where the stories and memories come. The smell of a craft beer can take me back instantly to a place and a time that I had it. World Class Beer is all about great beer. They are helping to tell the story in many ways, including social media. You can follow them on Twitter or Facebook. They have a fantastic app called World Class Beer where you can learn more about beer or find who has your favorite craft brew on tap or on the shelf. The first thing I did upon downloading the app was to find out where I could get some Gumballhead wheat from Three Floyds Brewing Company. Much to my delight, I found out I could get some just down the street. We have many other great story tellers here in Indiana such as Flat12 Bierwerks, Triton Brewing Company, Fountain Square Brewing, and Daredevil Brewing Company. I encourage you to go out and support these local breweries and pick up something new so you can sit back, relax, and let them tell you a great story. Clark A. Edwards is National Portfolio Manager for TransFirst, LLC. He was born and raised in Irvington and is a Graduate of Indiana University. He is a 20 year resident of Fishers where he resides wih his wife and two young sons. He can be reached at clark.edwards@sbcglobal.net.

area
The Southeastern Swim Club (SSC) has already started its summer season as a big winner. The team hosted its first swim meet on May 3 at HSE High School as part of a service project. This particular meet, titled Vernon Manor Super Splash represented a huge success by giving back to the community. Vernon Manor Children’s Home, located in Wabash, Indiana, serves as a nursing home for children ranging from newborns to young adults with severe physical and mental disabilities (www.exceptionallivingcenters.com). “The Vernon Manor Super Splash not only served as a great meet for our team but also as a worthy service project for all of us,” says Steve Reising, board member of SSC and announcer of swim meets. “This was a wonderful opportunity to help out with a great cause.” This facility has recently dedicated and remodeled a room to function as a library. Both residents and their guests will be able to utilize this media room. The staff at Vernon Manor is hoping to fill the room with books. Reising adds, “They will take used books as long as they are in decent shape. They can be child or adult oriented, and any books will do. In addition, we are assisting them with bookcases and other library-type furniture.”
“The goal for Southeastern Swim Club (SSC) was to donate over 500 books to Vernon Manor, and it is just unbelievable how so many people have contributed so far,” says Dan Johnson, founder and board member of SSC. Johnson came up with the idea to start this charitable event after recently visiting this facility. Dan and his wife, Kaylee, have a special connection to Vernon Manor. After having been blessed with twin girls (Kalor and Kenli) in 1998, Kalor needed special care. Fortunately, they were introduced to Vernon Manor and the amazing staff who took care of Kalor during this difficult time. “Andy Peterson, who is one of the twins’ Godfathers, came up with this plan to collect books about a week before the first swim meet. We hurried to put the word out to swimmers, parents, and others within this club. It’s amazing how so many people embraced this idea without even knowing the special connection. I think it speaks volumes (accidental pun) about the support in this community that all this happened in just nine days,” Johnson says with a chuckle as he realized he blurted out a befitting pun. During the Vernon Manor Super Splash meet, SSC collected cash donations and library furnishings. In addition, over 2,411 books have been donated which significantly exceeds the original goal of 500.
Kalor passed away when she was four and one-half years old and she left behind a brother Luke (now a junior on the HSE High School swim team) and her twin sister, Kenli (now an eighth grader at Riverside Junior High). Kenli and Luke have been empowering others as they reach out to make a difference. Kenli explains, “Although I remember very little about the time I was able to spend with my sister, Kalor, I do remember always visiting a happy place. Each year, we try to give back to them and the many families still there.” Johnson explains that although the loss of their daughter/sister is still painful, he and his family feel indebted to help support Vernon Manor—a home where nurturing energy is still needed for all the young patients. He says, “We may not have Kalor anymore, but there are still a lot of children and families that need our love and support.” If you would like to make a monetary donation, call 260-563-8438 or visit www.exceptionallivingcenters.com. She has been writing for neighboring atGeist. com for over seven years and claims that the best part is meeting all the interesting people in her community. JUNE 2013

* Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge and Kids’ Firefighter Combat Challenge* New this year to the Freedom Festival is the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge hosted by the Fishers Freedom Festival, Town of Fishers Fire Department, and Indiana University Health Saxony Hospital. This traveling competition visits 25 locations throughout the country every year and culminates in the Scott World Challenge XXII in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 22–27, 2013. The event will showcase the talents, skills, and athleticism of America’s firefighter heroes through exciting competitions for all to enjoy. Watch firefighters climb a five-story tower in full gear, drag and hoist fire hoses, race around obstacles, and simulate forcible entry. This is a must-see event and is expected to attract upwards of 10,000 spectators throughout the competition. In addition to the professional challenge, there will also be a Kids’ Firefighter Combat Challenge. This event targets
children ages 4–11 and offers a miniature version of the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge. Registration for the challenge will begin on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Children will enjoy this opportunity to try on real fire gear and use a fire hose. Registration for the 5K and 2-Mile events is now open at https://secure.getmeregistered.com then search for “Fishers Freedom Festival.” Events take place at Roy G. Holland Memorial Park at the corner of Sunblest Boulevard and Ellipse Parkway. Last year, there were over 1,400 participants. The free Kiddie Run will be held on the baseball field near the Registration Tent. All proceeds benefit the Roy G. Holland Memorial Fund and the Roy G. Holland Backpacks for Kids program which supports the Hamilton Southeastern School District.
* PARADES * Children’s Parade: This year’s parade, “A Quarter Century of Celebrating Freedom,” will be on Sunday, June 30. Decorate your bikes, tricycles, wagons, and strollers and join the fun! The lineup and judging for the parade will begin at 9:00 a.m., and the parade will start promptly at 10:00 a.m. Motorized cycles and scooters are not permitted in the parade. Your kids will enjoy the cheering fans as they pedal their way through the parade. Find out more details about participation at http://www.fishersfreedomfestival.org/ events/childrens-parade/. Main Parade: The main parade will be held Sunday, June 30 at 4 PM. This year, the very first queen, Lindsay Kouwe-Shaw, will be participating in the 25th Anniversary celebration. Brad McKinney, the festival’s first king, had to decline the invitation due to his own wedding celebration occurring the same weekend. The parade route will begin at Lantern Road and 116th Street, continue west on 116th Street to Holland Drive, and north on Holland Drive to the park. Pick your spot on the parade route early, and enjoy the celebration with the entire
family. Admission is free, but local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will be collecting canned food, school supplies, and new toys along the parade route to donate to local Fishers families.
* Arts in the Park & Food Vendors * Arts and Crafts exhibitors will set up in the wooded area of the park. Over 120 vendors will be selling jewelry, clothing, housewares, handmade toys, and unique one-ofa-kind creations. The booths are open from 9 AM - 8 PM on Saturday and from 10 AM - 8 PM on Sunday. Visit the Arts in the Park, and be inspired by these local and national artists. Come enjoy the whole weekend without the worries of what to cook for lunch or dinner. Leave the picnic basket at home, because 30 food vendors are ready to delight your taste buds. There are no duplications on main menu items, so everyone will find a treat during the weekend. Family favorites from tenderloins, hot dogs, and brats to ice cream, elephant ears, and cotton candy will be available all day. Local community booths make up 12 of the vendors, so get ready for some fabulous festival food.
* Music and Dancing * 1. “Where the Music Is”: Teens and young adults area. The music will be rockin’ for those under 21 years old. Enjoy the stage on Saturday, June 29, and Sunday, June 30, from 6 PM - 10 PM. Radio Now 100.9 will be there pumping out the music and will have great giveaways to share. 2. Reynolds Farm Equipment Street Dance: Dancers and music lovers of all ages will enjoy this event on Saturday, June 29, from 6:30 PM - 10 PM. featuring the

band “My Yellow Rickshaw.” Rain won’t stop the show, so mark your calendars and go! In the event of rain, the band will play in the Entertainment Tent. 3. Bid Daddy Caddy: sponsored by Saxony will perform on Sunday, June 30 from 6:30 PM – until the fireworks begin at dusk.
* Fireworks * Fireworks begin at dusk on Sunday, June 30. Ooh and aah at the awesome display as the fireworks wrap up a weekend of community fun. Light-up glow necklaces will be on sale for $3 to support the fireworks fund.
* Food & School Supply Drive * The Fishers Freedom Festival will continue its 25-year tradition of collecting canned foods and school supplies to benefit programs that serve Hamilton Southeastern School District families. The Freedom Festival continues to be a free community event through generous donations, sponsorships, and grants. However, in lieu of charging admission to festival activities, the community is encouraged to bring donations of canned food and/or school supplies. Over 2 tons of food were donated last year; and this year, the festival will also be accepting donations of
new toys, games, puzzles, and books. The Food Drive Tent will be set up in the parking lot of Roy G. Holland Memorial Park and will accept donations during festival hours. It’s never been easier to give back to the community!
* Parking * Limited parking is available near Roy G. Holland Memorial Park for $2. Free shuttle service is available to and from the park and the Fishers Municipal Complex at 1 Municipal Drive and the Alhuda Foundation at Lantern Road and Sunblest Boulevard. The shuttle service runs Saturday 10 AM - 11 PM and Sunday 10:30 AM - 11:15 PM. Service will be suspended on Sunday from 3 PM - 5:30 PM for the main parade and during the fireworks.
* Volunteer Opportunities * It takes more than 300 volunteers to help make the festival a success. Volunteer opportunities for the Fishers Freedom Festival are available from June 1, 2013, through July 1, 2013, with the bulk of the needs happening during the weekend of June 29 and 30. Youth and adult volunteer opportunities are available in the Arts and Crafts area, Business Tent, Free Game Tent, Information Tent, 5K Event, Children’s Tent, Food Drive, Children’s Parade, Main Parade, and much more. The Boy Next Door | Laurie Quinn Sitting in my back yard, I have have watched the neighborhood kids growmature even into responsible loving teenagers. So I cannot say I was totally surprised when I was approached by one of them to write an article on “kids stuff.” Yes those were the words he used! Let me introduce Turner Edwards! Turner is a 13-year-old student at Fall Creek Intermediate. He is the son of Clark and Deidra Edwards. The wheels started turning in Turner’s head about writing when he caught on that his dad, Clark, is one of my writers. Turner has accomplished many achievements in his thirteen years. He has played football for three years and played basketball for seven years. He has served on the student council for two

So what will Turner be writing about? For July’s issue, he will write his review of two area summer camps. Incrediplex is one that will be covered in this article and the second one is MyArt (Fishers Location). Both camps have graciously allowed Turner to attend camp free of charge so that he may give insight to our readers in this article. If you have a suggestion for Turner about a subject that you would like to know more about, please email him at turneratfishers@yahoo.com. We look forward to hearing your ideas for his next article!

Tech startups: In it to win it | Neal Moore The spirit of entrepreneurship is alive and well in Fishers. The recent opening of Launch Fishers, a high-tech work environment developed specifically for startup companies – has been a huge success. The incubator’s founder and Fishers resident, John Wechsler, said membership has grown steadily since January and now stands at 181 and is on pace to well exceed first-year projections. Launch Fishers is located in the lower level of the Fishers Public Library. On a related note, Wechsler is also a board member of the Venture Club of Indiana, which is co-sponsoring the Innovation Showcase, Thursday, July 11, at the Dallara
IndyCar Factory in the shadows of the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Showcase is an opportunity for fundable companies to exhibit and pitch to top local and regional investors. The top presenting companies are competing for more than $60,000 in cash and prizes. “We’re now in our fifth year, and the Innovation Showcase is clearly Indy’s premier event for connecting entrepreneurs with funding sources. We expect several Fishers-based start-ups to be among those presenting,” said Wechsler. Launch Fishers is a Showcase sponsor. “This fits into Launch Fishers’ broader mission of supporting and contributing to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Central Indiana,” explained Wechsler. “It’s the kind of thing that sends a signal to entrepreneurs and startup funders that Fishers is an important player in the development of technology companies.” The Showcase is open to the public. Tickets are available at www.theinnovationshowcase.com.

townepost welcomes Neal moore TO TEAM I’m Neal Moore, the new Local Editorial Manager for the TownePost network of community magazines and websites. I’ve spent 40 years in communications including TV news anchoring and reporting, public relations, video production, and in recent years, writing many stories for atGeist and atFishers. I’m very pleased to join Tom Britt in this new role. I’m going to ask for your involvement with TownePost as we develop new ways and opportunities to tell your stories. But first, some reflections on how we got to where we are today. I was born in 1953, and grew up in the era of three channels on the TV dial (four, if you could watch Popeye and Janie on fuzzy Ch. 4), and a handful of newspapers and radio stations providing local news and information. These media platforms enjoyed remarkable popularity and profits using a “one-to-many” business model. It was content of their making; offered on schedules of their choice; delivered on static, non-interactive devices. Such was the mid-century media landscape. Ironically, during the same years that I delivered newspapers and dreamt of being a radio disk jockey, the U.S. government and academic researchers were noodling with the first iteration of what would become today’s Internet. You might have noticed that the Internet (and the World Wide Web that it spawned) turned the media business on its collective head. Amidst the fallout were the evolution of citizen journalism and the ability to deliver hyper-local content. Such is the media landscape today. That’s what makes TownePost tick – news, information, storytelling – all of it laser-focused on the communities, neighborhoods, even streets where we live, and much of it generated by local residents. As publisher Tom Britt puts it, “There’s no news that’s too small”, and I agree. We want to know what’s happening in your world, and to understand what your interests are. We encourage you to share your stories, photos, videos, news tips, ideas and suggestions so that we, in turn, can share them with the thousands of readers, web surfers and advertisers in Geist and Fishers. Finally, I’m looking for skilled writers to join the TownePost team. If you’re interested in researching and writing local stories, and have a flair for great storytelling, contact me by email, neal@atGeist.com. All writing styles and experience levels are welcome. Together, let’s continue sharing stories about Geist and Fishers that reflect just how terrific our communities are, and what great places they are to live.
Who has The
besT donuT in GeisT?
During the month of June and July, Tom Britt is going to visit four locally-owned donut shops to find out once and for all who has the best donut in Geist. Check the schedule online to find out when he will be at YOUR favorite shop and come out to show your support! Watch live video exclusively through www.GeistTV.com JUNE 2013

That Healing Touch | J. Andy Murphy
cience tells us that nothing is as healing as the human touch, and Charlie Marsh knows this better than most. Marsh was living in Scottsdale, Arizona, when she signed up for a wellness Massage Envy membership. Curious about the franchise after several visits, she inquired about the business side of one of her most favorite places to be. She liked what she heard and tucked it into the back of her mind. Five years later, she decided the time was right to take the next step as a possible franchise owner; but that step took an unexpected turn when she learned the company needed a regional developer in Indiana (where she grew up). She applied for the position and got the job.
S
In 2007, Marsh opened what would be the first Indiana Massage Envy location at 146th and Meridian Streets. Business was swift as the wellness concept of professional massage therapy, delivered by highly-trained massage therapists, quickly spread. The process of engaging in regular massage therapy sessions that relieve strained muscles and pain, while reducing individual stress levels in a relaxing environment, truly does a world of good for the human body as medical reports clearly document the havoc that stress plays on the overall state of our general health. Add to that injuries that can accompany an active lifestyle at any age, and you clearly see what Marsh saw when she first decided to learn more about this very successful franchise operation. “I believe that the three pillars of the Massage Envy concept – Affordable, Convenient, and Professional – contain the wellness foundation that has expanded into over 1,000 locations nationwide,” she said. “We are open seven days a week in community locations that are convenient to our members on all sides of town. All our certified massage therapists have a minimum of 500 hours of professional training in the many areas of anatomy and physiology and meet all state and local licensing requirements,” she added. Massage Envy offers an alternative to your typical day spa with customized services and affordable pricing. They invite you to see what they are all about for $49. The one-hour session includes a consultation, dressing change, and then 50 minutes of hands-on massage with multiple types of therapy available. Massage Envy offers a variety of massage types from which to choose because therapeutic needs vary not only from person to person, but also from day to day. hen the house lights come up in the Zionsville Performing Arts Center (PAC) on Wednesday, June 19, the mettle of 32 young women will be tested as they vie for the 2013 crown of Miss Indiana in the preliminary round of competition. More than simply a beauty pageant, the Miss Indiana Pageant is, as co-director Frank Ricketts likes to say, “a scholarship organization in a beauty pageant format.” Zionsville and the Indianapolis area will host the week-long series of events leading up to the crowning of Miss Indiana on Saturday, June 23, and the crowning of Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen on Friday, June 22.
Umbrella of Miss America Pageants
The Miss Indiana Pageant falls under the umbrella of the Miss America Organization and includes the Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen, Miss Indiana, and Miss America pageants. At the state level, the Miss Indiana Pageant exists as a nonprofit, and none of the positions are paid. Volunteers staff every job. Thirty-three local pageants feed into and are licensed by the Miss Indiana Pageant. Local competitions are comprised of both closed and open pageants. According to www.missindianapageant.com/ contestant.html, “Closed pageants are defined by groups of counties or by a university. Open pageants are available to women who meet residency

a proposed state board and identified the PAC as their perfect Zionsville venue for their home base. With local support from then-Zionsville School Superintendent Howard Hull, the Zionsville Lions Club, and the community, they presented an application that the Miss America Organization couldn’t resist.
Miss Indiana State Franchise
The Miss America Organization awarded Ricketts and co-director Aren Straiger the Miss Indiana franchise nine years ago. At the time, this dynamic duo were successful local co-directors of the Miss North Central Indiana Pageant and were one of four groups to apply for the franchise to the Miss America Organization. The two did their homework and put together

Fishers Resident Audra Casterline Audra Casterline joined the pageant circuit at the age of 15—relatively late in life compared to many girls, but she is picking up speed. With several titles to her credit, she currently wears the crown of Miss Wabash Valley 2013. Audra, a Fishers resident, recently graduated from Anderson University with a major in Bible and Religion and a minor in Spanish. While most new graduates are hitting the job market, all of Audra’s current energy is flowing to her preparation for the Miss Indiana Pageant, which will be held the week of June 17 at the Performing Arts Center in Zionsville, IN. No stranger to this competition, Audra has competed in the pageant before and was first-runner up in 2012. In 2011 she had the unusual experience of competing in Miss Indiana with her sister Ashley. Being involved with the pageant has challenged her. “The Miss America Organization really encourages you to develop the whole person,” Audra said. Contestants much have a firm grasp of politics and current events and their personal opinions on hotbutton issues, as these are all fodder for the 10-minute interview that every contestant undergoes. “It’s been worth all the work, keeping myself healthy, progressing, and growing ….You have to learn to speak with grace, but real substance,” she said. Audra’s passion and her platform is “promoting cultural unity through translation.” She feels the scholarship opportunities of the pageant are so important, and if she wins, would love to continue her education by studying abroad in Chile and becoming fluent in Spanish. Ultimately, she wants to be able to either start or join with an organization that helps to minister to and champion the Hispanic community in America through language acquisition and cultural assimilation. Audra asserts that the Miss American Organization has much to offer young women and encourages others to participate in the competition, with one caveat: they must do the homework and prepare. She offers a few tips to help: • Get your eyes on the news every day. It’s crucial to have a keen awareness of what’s happening in the world. • Take care of your body. Audra previously struggled with anorexia, but “ironically it was the Miss Indiana Pageant that saved me from that.” One of the directors noticed and called her out on it. As Audra said, “The pageant wants vibrant, healthy women who take care of themselves and have energy and stamina and love themselves well.” • Develop a talent. Roughly 25-30 percent of the competition is about talent. Win or lose, Audra has a winning attitude. “The skills I’ve gained and I’ve refined, I know that regardless of what happens in June, I will take those skills with me for the rest of my life,” she said. 44 fishers c o m m u n i t y n e w s l e t t e r Fishers_June_2013.indd 44
for becoming involved in the pageant circuit. Straiger, however, is just following in her parents’ footsteps. As 40-year volunteers in the Miss America Organization, they currently function as executive producers for the Miss Indiana Pageant. “Their passion for the Miss America Organization was instilled in me at a very young age, and it is something that continues to this day,” she said. After receiving the franchise, Straiger and Ricketts set some lofty goals for the pageant:
1. Increase number of local pageants that were qualifiers for the Miss Indiana Pageant 2. Increase number of contestants 3. Increase number of people attending the pageant 4. Increase media exposure They’ve since met all those goals and then some. Under their watch, they’ve added the distinction of having Indiana’s first Miss America. In 2009, Miss Indiana, Katie Stam, won the title of Miss America in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both Straiger and Ricketts know all the hard work has been worth it. “We had ideas of how we wanted to see the state [pageant] run. We both believe that if you want something done, get busy and do it yourself,” Ricketts said.
Where’s the Money?
The Miss Indiana Pageant would not be possible were it not for the help of generous sponsors. The title sponsor for the 2013 pageant is Indy Laser. Many other sponsors donate goods and services and money for the scholarship fund. “Miss America is the largest source of scholarship money for women in the world,” Ricketts said. The top ten winners all receive scholarship money. Several colleges also offer in-kind scholarships throughout Indiana, and the girls can qualify for scholarships during pageant week by winning awards in several

other categories including academic, community service, and talent, just to name a few. “It’s gratifying to see these young women grow whether or not they win a title,” Ricketts said.
Platform: Children’s Miracle Network
Each young woman who enters the Miss Indiana contest must have a community service platform to promote if she is the winner. “The job of Miss Indiana is not just the Miss America Pageant,” Ricketts said. It’s a job that includes promoting her platform with appearances throughout the entire year. Straiger added, “Our contestants learn community involvement and become passionate about their personal platforms. They continue to develop their talents and strive to live healthy and active lifestyles,” said Straiger. Part of participating in the program includes promoting the Children’s Miracle Network, which is the platform of the Miss America Organization. In lieu of an entrance fee, the contestants to the Miss Indiana Pageant must raise money for this charity, which is then donated to a local hospital in the Children’s Miracle network. In Indiana, Riley Hospital for Children receives the donations. Consequently, the money raised from each state pageant stays in and benefits local children.
Pageant Details
With the pageant date rapidly approaching, each young woman is busy preparing for her areas of competition. All contestants must compete in five areas: talent, interview (a private, 10-minute interview with the panel of five judges), onstage questions, evening gown, and swimsuit. Preliminary competition is held on Wednesday and Thursday of pageant week, and the top ten move on to final competition and the crowning of the winner which, this year, will be held on Saturday, June 23. Ticketed
events and the entire schedule can be found at Overall, Ricketts stresses the importance of each contestant being herself. “We don’t want them to fit a mold; we want them to be individuals,” he said. “I don’t care if you’re a size 2 or a 20. You need to be in the best shape you can be; it’s not a size.”
of accomplished contestants, Ricketts emphasizes that as far as Miss Indiana is concerned, the true definition of beauty is “being talented, confident, articulate, and involved in community.”
