"In the next few years, the festival will present more and more evidence of the rich history of the French culture in Indiana in an effort to help Hoosiers get in touch with their French roots."

"‘For the life of the world’ is a phrase used as a common conclusion to mission statements, prayers and conversations among members of the Indiana-Kentucky Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America," shares Lutheran Bishop Bill Gafkjen.

This quote, while encompassing so much, ideally describes the mission of Christ the Savior (CTS) Lutheran Church’s in providing fresh produce to food banks in Hamilton County.

"Lutherans take very seriously creation care of this earth that God has given us to tend to," says Pastor Libby Manning, who serves at CTS with newly-called Pastor Brian Derrer.

"Cultivating a garden that supplies secure produce to food banks is a perfect use of our abundant land."

The idea of the Lazarus Community Garden, as it is also known, was originally proposed by parishioner Wanda Henderson. "I was inspired by a trip to Honduras last fall," shares Henderson, who works for Elanco. "I experienced a tour of Honduras Heifer Projects, which included animals raised for food, community gardening and beekeeping. It was in Honduras that my desire to provide fresh food and vegetables to those in need was ignited."

Another influence inspiring Henderson was when she participated with Eli Lilly’s "Annual Day of Service" working at Indy Urban Garden. Impressed by the eight acres of Indianapolis Parks that are dedicated to providing fruits and vegetables to local food pantries, Henderson wished to organize a similar scenario in Hamilton County.

The church allotted one acre for the garden, and it was soon clear that many HOA covenants prohibited gardens, including where Henderson and her family live. "Our original idea was to start the project with about 1/4 of an acre and to bring the

church together to create plots that community members could utilize," says Henderson. "With the consultation from Indy Urban Acres Director Tyler, we decided to provide plots free of charge to members of the community with the understanding that they would commit to donating 50 percent or more of their garden to the local food bank."

Today, there are about 30 individuals and families that have plots at the Lazarus Community Garden. All have agreed to donate at least 50 percent of their harvest to the local food banks. The Fishers Rotary is a strong partner with CTS for the Lazarus Community Garden. Fishers Rotary members are currently cultivating an additional 1/4 acre, donating 100 percent of their harvest to the Delaware Township food pantry whose mission is food security.

Future plans for the Lazarus garden include an extensive list of programs such as how to garden and rotate crops, planning, layout, what grows best in Indiana soil, how to cook those ‘odd’ vegetables, canning, rainwater collection and composting.

"We hope to eventually build a pavilion on the north side of the garden that will enable us to catch the rain water, wash vegetables on weekly harvest dates, store our tools for work days and provide us and outside space to hold programs," shares Henderson. "A gardening camp for kids would also be nice to offer."

"We believe that the church exists not for its own sake, but as an instrument of God’s care for all people and all creation," shares Bishop Gafkjen. "In other words, the church exists for the life of the world."

More and more Indiana microbreweries are making plans to move north to tap into growing communities, such as Fishers, Carmel and Noblesville! Some are open now, and others are set to open soon.

Heady Hollow Brewing Company partners Keefe Pietri and George Garrison are opening a brewpub at 11069 Allisonville Rd. near the low lying "Heady Hollow" area.

The two have been brewing since 2008 and are known for their unique "coffee pecan porter" brew.

The new facility will have a five-barrel brewing system that visitors can view through a large window, a patio and familyfriendly restaurant space. They will also offer some other local brews such as Scarlet Lane.

Indianapolis-based Sun King Brewing wants to expand its presence by opening a tap room and small batch brewery in the Fishers area.

Sun King, just five years old, is Indy’s largest craft microbrewery and the second largest in the Hoosier state.

Named after preferred growing regions for hops, 48th Parallel Brewing Co. is planning to open in the heart of Fishers, but no schedule has been announced at this time.

Jason Wuerfel opened Books & Brews in the Fishers area at 9402 Uptown Dr. It’s a unique concept mixing brews with food and a quiet spot to read a book.

In Noblesville, Barley Island Brewing Company at 639 Conner Street is going strong, serving crowd favorites such as Dirty Helen and Blind Tiger.

Head up to the Union Brewing Company at 622 N. Rangeline Rd. in Carmel where you will find artisan ales handcrafted two barrels at a time.

Or you can visit Upland Brewery, 820 E. 116th St. in Carmel, where you will find 10 draft lines and rotating seasonal selections.

“Take the leap, and the net will appear,” said Sylvia McNair, one of 19 women featured in a book by Michael S. Maurer, “19 Stars of Indiana: Exceptional Hoosier Women,” IU Press.

This statement by McNair adequately sums up Mickey Maurer’s approach to life. Maurer has been many things, and the term “entrepreneur” doesn’t seem to do him justice.

As part of his civic duties, Maurer served as the President of the Indiana Economic Development Corp., and the following year, he was named Indiana Secretary of Commerce by Governor Mitch Daniels.

“I was paid $1 per year for that job,” shares Maurer emphasizing, “ONE dollar!”

Maurer replaced Vera Bradley co-founder Pat Miller as the Indiana Secretary of Commerce. During the transition, Maurer referred to Miller as a “classy dame,” which was spun as an offensive comment

by The Indianapolis Star.

To the contrary, Maurer was offering Miller, who was not offended in the least, a sincere, heartfelt compliment.

This incident inspired Maurer to pen the book, “19 Stars of Indiana: Exceptional Hoosier Women,” highlighting true role models for our society, both locally and globally.

“One snowy weekend, I thought I would arrange my underwater photographs into a book,” recalls Maurer. “One year later, the book went to print.”

In his most recent book, “10 Essential Principles of Entrepreneurship,” Maurer features life lessons you never learned in school. He dedicates the book to his father, Julius Maurer, and his Uncle Mickey.

“My dad and uncle owned Maurer Brothers Auto Parts at Ninth and Senate Avenue,” shares Maurer. “Out on the fence was a sign that read, ‘If you can’t stop in, smile as you go by.’” The lessons shared in the book are illustrated with examples of Maurer’s friends, including Martha Hoover, who exemplifies redefining “barriers to entry.” Hoover is not mentioned once but four times throughout the book.

Harold Smith has attended Mickey’s Camp for 14 years the 40+ activities on the list of options.

“A camper can learn how to play Texas Hold’em from World Series of Poker champion Linda Johnson.”

Since its inception 15 years ago, Mickey’s Camp has raised and donated over $2 million to local charities. Descending on Bradford Woods are 125 women and 125 men to immerse themselves in activities taught by the best in their fields.

Burnett joined event manager extraordinaire Kari Strolberg in coordinating all camp activities, meals and logistics. Not only does Burnett get to work with Mickey’s Camp, but this enables her to work closely with her dad, gleaning knowledge from him.

“You can’t get a better teacher than my dad,” says Burnett. “He is patient and encouraging, and while he may steer me a bit, he is always there for me. I love being

with my dad and watching him in action.”

“This is the ninth year for women and the 15th year for men,” shares Strolberg.

“We have many repeat campers, but new campers are always welcome.”

Next month, a new magazine will be hitting your mailboxes. Mascot Monthly, a full color sports magazine, will connect local school athletics to their communities, beginning with Hamilton Southeastern.

The Mascot Monthly will reach over 16,000 people every month through direct mailing to every HSE school district home as well as free distribution at the games.

"My initial reaction was that this could be unbelievable to promote HSE Athletics," said Greg Habegger, athletic director at HSE. "It’s been interesting to me in this office that people in this day and age get their news in different ways. Obviously they can go to their phones and look up Twitter or look up a website. Instantly I thought this is going to fill a void that people are looking for."

“We couldn’t be more excited about the potential of working with Mascot. We think that it is going to promote athletics in our community beyond what we can even imagine. We see people getting excited about athletics that maybe didn’t even realize what all went on here.”

With 3,000 students, it can be easy for athletes to be lost in the crowd, especially in smaller sports. There are so many students with stories that never get shared – the female wrestler, the freshman that runs half marathons, the sophomore from Japan that plays baseball because it reminds him of his life back home. Mascot Monthly is a place for these stories, regardless of whether they are the senior football star or the freshman lacrosse newbie.

"Something that we believe in as an athletic department is we never use the phrase ‘major and minor sports.’ To those athletes and to those parents and grandmas and grandpas, they’re all major, and they should be," said Jim Self, co-athletic director at HSE. "I sometimes think when you look at local newspapers, basketball and football are covered really well. But we’re really proud of all of our sports. We’ve got kids doing great things in all of our sports, and sometimes that’s hard to get that message out there, what kids are accomplishing in some of our other sports that aren’t basketball and football."

Mascot Monthly will feature student athletes, their coaches, their fans and their teams. The magazine will also function as a program at sporting events. From the publishers of the TownePost Network as well as former Indianapolis Colts Marketing Director and sports columnist Ray Compton, Mascot Monthly will share stories through print, video and social media.

"We couldn’t be more excited about the potential of working with Mascot. We think that it is going to promote athletics in our community beyond what we can even imagine. I am amazed that there are still people who don’t know we have 19 sports or state-level competitors in all our sports," said Habegger.

"The Mascot is different because it will be the first monthly publication dedicated only to a high school’s sports activities. "We can provide really good content in a very well-defined market that is not being served at all right now."

"We had a saying when we returned, ‘I wouldn’t do that again for a million dollars, and I wouldn’t take a million dollars for the experience,’" shares McGriff, who spoke reverently and expressed his sincerest gratitude for all of the troops who served, insisting that the supportive elements of the front lines were as critical as the men at the line.

With growth of the air show comes an increased need for additional volunteers. Jill Fewell of VeteransEvents.org and member of the WWII Roundtable, assisted with gathering veterans to the Warbirds Air Show.

It’s the love of military aviation that brought this gathering together.

Attending the famous Oshkosh Air Show as a kid inspired Schell to join the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a weapons systems officer in an F-15E. "My position with the USAF was knows as a ‘back seater,’" says Schell.

"I was thrilled to be involved in gathering and coordinating veterans for honor flights and the Honoring Veterans Program," shares Fewell.

"We were able to sponsor their lunch and make it a special day for all of them. If I can help make veterans smile, feel respected and loved, then my job is complete."

The CAF runs some of the larger air shows around the country, so it seemed natural to their members to rejuvenate the tradition locally, enlisting the help from others to make the event a success. On hand

Weight loss and fitness challenges are exciting because they’re fun, mix things up and keep you focused on a specific goal. They increase awareness and open the doors to better health.

But not all challenges are created equal, and some challenges can be counterproductive to your health goals. If you’re going to join a short-term challenge this summer, here are five types of programs to AVOID when you’re trying to lose weight.

1. AVOID CHALLENGES JUST FOCUSED ON WORKING OUT. Any approach to wellness, better health and weight management needs to include nutrition, lifestyle changes and fitness.

2. AVOID CHALLENGES THAT DON’T INCLUDE SOUND NUTRITIONAL RESOURCES. Diets are like zombies: dead but they keep coming back to life. Ditch diets and join a program that showing you HOW to eat healthy every day.

3. AVOIDS CHALLENGES NOT FOCUSED ON REVVING YOUR METABOLISM. Weight training done right and smart cardio are the 1-2 punch that ensures you’re NOT wasting your time when you exercise and actually creates the FOUNDATION for a healthy metabolism. Studies show that when you add just five pounds of lean body muscle, your body burns 200 MORE calories each day. That’s revved!

4. AVOID CHALLENGES THAT DON’T SHOW YOU HOW TO MAKE LIFESTYLE CHANGES. For example, the Free Day Concept is critical. It’s a bad idea to workout every day, and it’s a bad idea to be on some eating plan or cleanse for extended periods of time without short breaks.

FIRST ARTS CRAWL PLANNED IN FISHERS Writer / Pat Carlini

The first ever "Arts Crawl" will be held in the Nickel Plate District this month, showcasing the work of local artists before one of the popular AMP After Dark concerts.

The free Arts Crawl is a collaboration between the City of Fishers, the Fishers Arts Council and the Nickel Plate District.

They have paired artists with businesses for one night, so visitors can stop in different stores and restaurants and see artwork from more than two dozen local and regional artists.

Lisa Vielee of the Fishers Arts Council says the first Arts Crawl is great for business and the artists alike.

"With all the new development in Fishers, people are visiting the restaurants and boutiques and coming in for the AMP After Dark concerts, so it’s a great way to entertain our visitors as well as showcase our local businesses and artists," says Vielee.

One of the artists featured at the Arts Crawl will be Warren Miller, a well-known Indianapolis artist who will have his artwork at the new Brixx Pizza in the heart of the downtown development.

To find your way around the Arts Crawl, an electronic map will be added to the Nickel Plate District app.
