Vines for Life Expands | Tom Britt This year’s fourth annual Vines for Life Tasting Event promises to be the largest fundraiser to date. Benefiting three local cancer charities, this year’s wine and craft beer tasting has added a craft liquor tasting and moved to The Hawthorns Golf & Country Club.

“We simply outgrew the Indianapolis Yacht Club,” said co-founder Jeanne Britt. “Over the last two years, we have reached capacity, and we needed a Geist-area venue to host a larger crowd.”

Organizers, including Ray Cox with Elite Beverages, have also added a craft liquor tasting this year to appeal to those that enjoy bourbons and whiskeys from small distilleries. Last year, craft beers were added and warmly received. Cox says that this will be the most diverse tasting to date. “Kentucky bourbons are big right now, and we plan on introducing some of the most popular, independently owned distilleries.”

What started as a southern Indiana wine tour aboard a chartered bus evolved into a sold-out 60+ wine tasting at the Indianapolis Yacht Club in 2010. So far, over $70,000 has been raised and split between Creating Hope, Indy SurviveOars and Team Luke.

For Creating Hope, moneys are used to purchase “Hope Kits” which consist of art supplies and instructions for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Similarly, Team Luke funds Rhythm Pax for cancer patients at Riley Hospital for Children. Indy SurviveOars uses their proceeds to fund their breast cancer survivor dragonboat racing team on Geist Reservoir.

More tickets are available this year, up from 250 to 350.

Pricing remains at $50 per person and includes all the tastings, heavy appetizers, live music by Bongo Boy Music, parking and live and silent auctions. Tickets are available online at VinesForLife.com on a first-come, firstserved basis.

Saving Geist

Reservoir lake lemon conservancy district may be the model for geist to follow

While Eurasian milfoil, blue green algae and zebra mussels have been the topic of conversation in recent years, let’s not forget that the 70-year-old reservoir is slowly filling up with sediment. Passing the hat for ad hoc weed treatments will mask the problems for a while. What we need is a long-term plan and course of action that shares the responsibility of preserving the lake across all those that benefit from the lake.

Introducing Lake Lemon

Just south of Martinsville between Monroe and Brown Counties is another reservoir called Lake Lemon. Back in 1955, Lake Lemon was built to provide a water supply for the growing city of Bloomington. Lake lovers built homes, fished and launched boats into the water for recreation.

Then in the mid-1980s, the shorelines were eroding, and weeds started dominating the coves and waterways. With property values dropping, a small group of homeowners decided to form a conservancy district to save the lake. In 1995, the Lake Lemon Conservancy District was formed, encompassing 500 homes on and around Lake Lemon. Their first order of business was to hire a Lake Manager, Bob Madden from Fishers.

“My first year budget was $155,000,” said Madden during an interview at the Lake Lemon Conservancy District offices next to their public boat ramp. “I made a whopping $24,000 a year salary, and the rest was spent on weeds and shoreline erosion control.”

In the early years, the volunteer board of directors prioritized and tackled the lake’s biggest problems.

Homeowners started seeing results immediately and in turn started implementing best practices and erosion management plans of their own. Property values climbed.

Today the District has a $500,000 annual budget with ongoing weed management, a shoreline preservation plan and a mechanical dredging operation. Monthly board meetings are open to residents to find out the timelines on treatment schedules and capital improvement projects. Collectively, the residents in the Lake Lemon Conservancy District are working together to solve any and all problems that arise on their shared natural resource.

Madden, who lived in Fishers until this summer, is very familiar with the issues we have been facing. “Geist reminds me a lot of Lake Lemon 19 years ago.”

Lake Lemon vs. Geist Reservoir

On the surface, Lake Lemon and Geist Reservoir are very similar in size, topography and purpose. Both are reservoirs built to provide water for nearby cities. They are roughly the same size (Geist is a little larger with 1,890 acres vs. 1,650 at Lake Lemon). Geist and Lake Lemon both have a yacht club, sailing club and a marina.

They even have a restaurant called the Porthole Bar & Grill. And yes, they are also battling Eurasian milfoil.

weeds in the lake, but [Eurasian] milfoil tends to grow really deep and choke out some of the other native plants.”

boat launching fees, dock fees and annual boating permit fees.

Surprisingly, Lake Lemon has not seen any of the Zebra mussels yet. Launch workers have been very diligent to keep them out, in addition to signs posted at the ramp.

In the case of Lake Lemon, revenues are a 50/50 split between fees collected from the homeowners in the district and fees collected from the boaters and slip owners. Madden said each home is accessed 12 cents per $100 of assessed value on their home annually, which is $120 per $100,000 of home value. Everyone is sharing the burden, and everyone is sharing the benefit.

Demographically, the reservoirs are very different. According to the US Census Bureau, the average household income at Lake Lemon is $64,503 compared to $148,779 at Geist. Home values are also much higher at Geist, a whopping $365,814 compared to only $138,800 at Lake Lemon. And with only a few hundred waterfront homes, erosion control has been a major focus since the early days of the district. Lake Lemon’s 24 miles of shoreline is mostly rip rap instead of the concrete seawalls that line Geist Reservoir.

Last August, the Town of Fishers hosted a roundtable discussion with representatives from Citizens Energy, Department of Natural Resources, Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Town of Fishers, Geist Lake Coalition and several Geist area homeowners’ association representatives.

At the time, the focus was on the treatment plan for Geist in 2014 and getting the Aquatic Management Plan updated.

Subsequent to that, discussions have evolved to include the possibility of a conservation district at Geist.

“Residents still need to contribute to the Geist Lake Coalition for milfoil and algae treatments.”

According to Troyer’s preliminary work, the Geist Conservancy District could represent approximately 4,000 homes, more than eight times the size and more than double the assessed value of Lake Lemon’s constituents.

GEIST HALF MARATHON ANNOUNCES MAJOR CHANGES FOR THE 2014 RACE Call it the seven year itch, but the St. Vincent Geist Half Marathon & 5K is making some major changes for this year’s “Race around the Reservoir” on May 17.

Fresh on the heels of last May’s race, organizers reconvened in August with survey responses from participants, volunteers and sponsors. After a board of directors restructuring, a new committee was formed called “Customer Experience” under the direction of board member and former Disney/Amazon executive Tim Rauschenbach.

“Our committee’s goal is to ensure that our event ‘wows’ our participants during each interaction leading up to, during and even after our event,” said Rauschenbach.

After a realignment of duties by the all-volunteer board of directors, a renaissance occurred. “Nothing was off the table,” said Geist Half Marathon President Matt Troyer. “We looked at the entire participant experience, the course, registration, entertainment and refreshments.”

The result: A new and improved St. Vincent Geist Half Marathon & 5K.

New Course

Perhaps the biggest change to this year’s race is the course changes for both the 13.1 mile and 5K race. Both the half marathon and 5K races will start at the same time on the Olio Road Bridge over Geist Reservoir. Runners will be divided by the median on Olio.

When they reach 104th Street, 5K runners will go east and cut back 16

through the Weatherstone/Canal Place neighborhoods while the half marathon runners will continue west through Cambridge as in previous years. “We feel that having both races start at the same time will add even more excitement to the festivities,” added Troyer.

While the first 3 1/2 miles of the half marathon is the same as past years, participants will now go north on Brooks School Road and run through the Hawthorns and Masthead II returning on Fall Creek Road back through Cambridge to the southeast parking lot at 116th and Olio Road near the start line.

Troyer explains that this adjustment streamlines the race for participants and volunteers alike. “With an outand-back course, we eliminate the need for shuttles to transport runners and spectators. Everyone can park at the schools and churches to the north and walk to and from the start/finish line. But probably the biggest perk of ending the race where we start is the ability to host a bigger post-race party.”

At the time of writing, the course is being USTAF sanctioned and measured, so the exact finish line and water stop locations are not yet known.

Rauschenbach assures participants that the course will be more entertaining and lively than years past. “We heard in our surveys that people enjoyed our bands, drumlines and cheerleading corps along the way. We’re going to take that to a whole new level this year.”

Packet Pick-Up

In years past, Hamilton Southeastern High School has been the host of

packet pick-up on the Friday night before the race. This year, St. Vincent Fishers Hospital plans to play host to a day-long packet pickup in their recently opened facility just north of the start line. With expanded hours, seminars throughout the day and a fully staffed cafeteria, St. Vincent Fishers is anxious to showcase their facilities and sports performance professionals. On race day, packet pickup will be conveniently located at the start/finish line in the southeast parking lot near 116th and Olio Road (Casler’s Kitchen & Bar).

Fundraiser

Most schools in the area will be kicking off their spring training programs in February or April, funded from proceeds donated by the Geist Half Marathon. With this year’s contribution of $60,000 ($30,000 to Hamilton Southeastern School Foundation and $30,000 to Lawrence Township School Foundation), the Geist Half Marathon has now raised over $300,000 for Geist area schools in just six years.

Organizers are looking for runners or walkers who have competed in all six of the previous races and plan to make the May 17th race their seventh.

She spotted a group of women coming toward her, laughing and chatting as they ran. “I knew one of them, and I thought it would be awesome to have a group like that. They were having so much fun.�

A few months later, after giving birth, Kenley connected with the women and began running with them regularly.

A few years later, the nucleus of the 12-woman group that was to become Team Film had formed. What started out as friends getting together to train has grown into a group that organizes events and raises money to help community organizations.

The group is about running — and biking, swimming and just about any other active pursuit — but, most important, it’s about making that connection Kenley had longed for that day during her run.

Sometimes women don’t take the time to do that with other women,” Kenley says. “We need permission to do that, because nurturing relationships with other women is important.”

They didn’t win based on times, though they did take honors for presentation. “We’re not the fastest, but we have the most fun,” Kenley says.

The group tried other names but kept coming back to Team Film, in part because of the deeper question the runners keep in mind.

“If you were to take a movie clip of your life, right now, today, would you be proud of the life you’re living?” Busack asked.

The types of physical activity the team undertakes vary widely. Sometimes, it’s as simple as the Family Rake the Leaves Day the team held as a challenge in the fall, with participants posting images on social media. Or members might support others during 50-mile runs. Or they might caravan to Florida for spring break, with seven families sharing a house and a week of fun at the beach.

“You run through the night, and you really get slaphappy,” Faust says. “You don’t sleep much, and you don’t sleep well.”

Like most everything involving Team Film, the business end evolved. At first members kept in touch via email and texting. Next came the Facebook page, /Goteamfilm. The website — goteamfilm.com — will be complete in January.

The local members of Team Film — three live out of state — meet at least weekly for runs and socializing. The lengths of the runs vary, depending on members’ training schedules, needs and time, they said. Everyone doesn’t finish at the same time, though they meet up afterward, sometimes lingering for hours.

“What’s really at the core for me is the connections. It’s harder when you’re an adult to make those great connections that you could when you were younger,” Faust says.

Busack agrees. “It’s not about just feeling great about getting a good run in. It’s about being with women who are going through the same life stages I am.”

Driving toward the park, you are greeted by statues ingeniously created by Indiana native Dale Enochs. This example of creativity is indicative of the thoughtfulness that is displayed throughout the development. When this statue was dedicated, Saxony contributed to the HSE Schools Foundation.

Before the first home was built, events were being planned to introduce and welcome people to the area. Saxony’s coming out party was the Oktoberfest event in 2010, and things have really snowballed from there. The Saxony community shines through its events. Not only are the events open to its residents but are offered up with open arms to the City of Fishers and surrounding areas which is rare.

Candi McKinnies-Schreve, the marketing manager of Saxony Management, has the 2014 calendar already booked up with fun events for the community. The first of these events will be a ‘Frosty Paws’ walk March 1. This first ever pet-friendly event will be a nice way to bring people out of hibernation, and like all the events at Saxony, it’s open to the community; it’s not just a neighborhood exclusive event.

The hosting of community-friendly events began with 2010’s Oktoberfest. The popular Farmer’s Market, Concerts in the Park and Movies in the Park as well as the July 3rd Independence celebration concert have become annual events.

The popular summer concert series will resume May 22 through dates in August; registration to receive emails from Saxony is available on their website, saxony-fishers.com.

The Oktoberfest bash is now partnered with the Fishers Freedom Festival. Last year’s event saw just under 10,000 people in attendance. Saxony also hosts the Fishers Renaissance Faire, a wildly popular event.

The 2014 calendar will introduce a Kids’ Triathlon and a few other annual 5K runs, including the Gobbler’s Jog. Saxony has quickly developed a wonderful reputation for their focus on outdoor events. One of the more obscure but popular events is ‘Corn Day.’ “We celebrate the sweet corn crop at the Farmer’s Market on the last Saturday of July,” says Candi. Apparently giving away truck loads of corn is a huge hit!

Expansion around the lake will include Saxony Hall. This building is a joint venture with the City of Fishers who signed a letter of intent last November 4. Saxony Hall would service up to 150 people for special events. The dedication of the building to the Town should take place in the third quarter of 2014. Along with Saxony Hall, the City of Fishers will be taking over the beach area as part of its parks department which is a bit unique for a Central Indiana community.

While only three years old, the beach at Saxony has quickly become a popular destination for many Fishers residents.

RD has the water tested each week to ensure it meets safe levels for its residents. Its underwater aerators assist in maintaining healthy oxygen levels in the lake. Recently stocked, ‘catch and release’ fishing is quickly becoming popular, as well as the kayak and paddle board rentals. The 20,000+ people who frequented the beach this past summer will be thrilled to discover new public restrooms being added for their convenience.

Creating Saxony has been quite a journey, especially considering this eastern edge of Hamilton County was barren land. Noblesville attorney Mike Howard likes to say it was just “beans and bunnies” until Saxony and other development came along.

With all of the events, amenities and housing options available in the Saxony development, it is challenging to know where to begin with its offerings. The next phase of the Saxony neighborhood is a two-story 6,000 square foot building with waterfront dining on the first level and apartments above.

F

or many of us, trains are a seasonal interest, visited at the Eiteljorg or weaved around the presents underneath piney Christmas trees. For John Dick III, model trains, tracks and towns fill his loft, his heart and much of his time all year long.

John is a self-professed “Model Train Guy” living in Fishers. He is husband to Niki and father to Jake (8) and Evie (4). He grew up around Anderson and majored in music/piano at Butler University. After graduation, he co-founded Premier Music Studios where he is currently co-owner and piano teacher. He enjoys taking his family camping, but his most impressive hobby is the study and creation of model trains.

It’s a family affair. John’s interest…okay, let’s call it what it really is…“obsession” with trains began when he was a small boy sitting on his father’s lap while he built model trains.

“My dad loved to build model trains. Still does,“ says John.

His dad, John Dick Jr., found himself interested in trains in the late 1940s when the Ringling Brothers Train would pass through Anderson. “There were stock cars for elephants and horses, wagons for the smaller animals such as monkeys and coaches for the employees,” explains John III. In addition, his grandpa, John Dick Sr., found trains so intriguing that he would ride the Anderson to South Bend line, just for fun. You might say the electrical track current runs through their blood because even John III’s son, Jake, has his own handmade continuous train track and village model table. Even little Evie finds them interesting.

While his dad taught John III how to solder wire to the track and build, paint and decal structures and cars from kits, John’s real passion lies in the scenery and weathering of the structures, tracks and roads. “Clean and new is boring to me. I like to weather everything, bury the lines, stack wood in a truck. That’s the character in it,” he says.

The cost of the hobby varies greatly from a few dollars for a basic kit to several hundred dollars for top-end locomotives. “Hobbytown knows me by now,” John giggles. Occasionally John sells old trains he no longer uses or writes for hobby publications, such as Milwaukee Road Historical Association and Model Railroad Hobbyist for what he calls “hobby money.”

John’s train track models the 1960s era railway from the Bedford quarries to Oolitic, displaying historically accurate under-maintained rails in dirt, stacked limestone ready for loading, big jib cranes, a mill, farmhouse and town.

Of course, some artistic flexibility was taken when John personalized the Oolitic town to his family.

If you look very closely, you will notice a pancake house (the kid’s favorite restaurant - at actual model), Dick’s Saloon and Niki’s Cake Shop (named after his wife). John painstakingly detailed the woods with painted and textured Styrofoam hills, trees he made out of branches and scenery foam, teeny tiny deer and limestone rocks cast out of plaster molds and hand painted. There are tiny people in the town, depot and on the farmhouse’s porch, as well as itsy bitsy gravel in the tracks.

Just as his model train railway is finely detailed, so is John’s knowledge of train history. His infinite knowledge of the Milwaukee Railroad is humbling to train mortals. He lights up with enthusiasm when pulling out one of his many train books to show historical pictures of a train, track or depot from a time long ago. You can’t help but find yourself wrapped up in the excitement.

John was more than happy to run the trains for me by attaching his Staging Cassette: a wooden, walled bridge-like box that opened on one of the long ends with a train inside sitting on a track. He clamped the opening onto the end of the model track, typed the train number into his Digital Command Control remote and became a train engineer for a while.

At the young age of 38, John says, “I’m in the ‘gap generation’ of model train enthusiasts. Not many people my age are into this. It takes time and patience, and that’s what is treasurable about it. There is no instant gratification.” What does the future hold for John? “Well I’d like to do a branch to Seymour next.” I’m sure it will be detailed and spectacular.

MEYER NAJEM MOVING TO DOWNTOWN FISHERS Fishers Announces Redevelopment Partnership with Meyer Najem | Nathan Lamb The Meyer Najem Corporation is coming to downtown Fishers through a public-private partnership that will redevelop a vacant parcel near the railroad tracks.

The construction firm plans to establish a two-story, 40,000-square-foot facility on 1.72 acres of town-owned land off Maple Street. The company expects to invest $5.5 million in the facility and take up occupancy in late 2014.

Fishers Town Council President John Weingardt described the company as an important piece of the community, in a recent release announcing the agreement.

“Meyer Najem is one of the Midwest’s leading construction firms,” said Weingardt. “Their expansion in downtown Fishers and construction of a new building show not only a strong commitment to our community, but a desire to be part of Fishers’ downtown revitalization.”

Currently located at 13099 Parkside Dr. in Fishers, Meyer Najem has operated locally since 1987. In a release, company President Tim Russell said they’re happy to stay and grow in Fishers.

“Meyer Najem is very pleased to continue our growth as a member of the Fishers business community,” said Russell. “We have seen and

experienced the benefit of the business-friendly environment here, which has been important to the success of our firm over the last 15 years.”

Town Assistant Director of Redevelopment Shelby Bowen listed several community benefits to the agreement, which was approved by the town council, the Fishers Redevelopment Commission and the Fishers Economic Development Commission on December 2.

Bowen described the town-owned parcel as a triangle of land between Maple Street, Lantern Road and the railroad tracks. He said the facility would go at the southern end of the parcel and would require demolition of a small vacant building on the property.

Under the deal, Fishers would also contribute $1.4 million in bond proceeds, but Bowen said that additional tax revenue from the developed property would offset any debt service cost.

In return, the Fishers Redevelopment Commission will have a master’s lease on the entire second floor of the building.

Bowen said that will give the commission up to 17,500 square feet available for sublease to high-growth, highpotential companies.

From an economic development standpoint, Meyer Najem has 71 employees, with average salaries of $81,000, according to Bowen. He said the downtown will benefit from having those employees as part of the community, adding that the discussions got started when local officials heard the company’s lease was up and that Meyer Najem was considering relocation.

“When we found out they were looking elsewhere and essentially being recruited, we stepped in as well,” he said.

“It was a great deal for them and us to keep them in town.”

The development will also include a surface parking lot with more than 100 parking spaces, which will be available to patrons of the downtown on holidays and weekends.

Bowen said the project is slated to break ground April 1.

Fishers Ice Festival Comes to the Nickel Plate District

During the first hour of this festival, families can watch the ice carvers put the finishing touches on their sculptures. Then from 6-9 pm, the sculptures will be displayed for everyone to walk through and enjoy their beauty.

GIRLS LACROSSE UNSTOPPABLE & RISING QUICKLY | Janet C. Striebel Many young female athletes typically turn to basketball, soccer, gymnastics and tennis. Those who excel at their given sport try to play at the college level, hoping to land a scholarship. Yet lacrosse (sometimes abbreviated to lax) is gaining national attention. In fact, the NCAA recently stated in its Annual Participation Report that lacrosse is the fastest growing college sport.

“There is a huge opportunity right now for girls trying to earn collegiate scholarships in lacrosse,” says Marty Miller, President of the HSE/ Fishers Girls Lacrosse Program.

“This opportunity is apparent not only because of Title IX [educational amendments of 1972 requiring that women’s sports offer an equal number 40

of scholarships as men’s sports] but also because its popularity continues to grow more and more.”

Although the modern women’s lacrosse game first began in 1890 at St. Leonard’s School in Scotland, this budding sport continues to gain national fame for women. Lacrosse resembles basketball in the grass, only each team consisting of 12 players tries to score a goal using a rubber ball and a lacrosse stick or racquet.

Calling Girls of all Skill Levels in Grades 5-12

Girls lacrosse in Fishers is a club sport (through S.P.O.R.T.S.) made up of players from both HSE and Fishers schools combined into one team. (fishersgirlslax.usl.la)

“Our goal is to double the program to 160 female lacrosse players from last year,” says Miller. “At the high school level, evaluations are held to place players into varsity or junior varsity teams with no cuts.”

skills in another sport (e.g., developing eye-hand coordination for softball) or trying to further prepare yourself for a prospective collegiate scholarship.

Pioneering the Way for Future Players

Some of the HSE/Fishers High School lacrosse players are also members of the Predators Lacrosse Club. These girls are proving their extreme talent as they travel around the country for big showcase events. Since September 2012, they have competed in 17 events.

They won the University of Louisville 5v5 Tournament, Marquette University 5v5 Event and finished 2nd in Notre Dame’s 5v5 Event. They also won the Midwest Showcase in Chicago at Loyola Academy, Six Flags Classic and the Chi Town Classic this past fall. They finished 2nd in their pool at the IWLCA President’s Cup against U.S. and Canadian teams this past November in Orlando.

This elite team includes players from these high schools: HSE/Fishers High School (9), Carmel (6), Mooresville (1), Westfield (1), Sacred Heart (2) and Culver Academy (1). The nine players from HSE/Fishers on the Elite team are

being recruited by Division 1, 2 and 3 schools. Five of these players are being recruited by D1 programs.

“The reason why we named the club team the Predators Lacrosse Club is that we did not want Indy or Indiana in our name because Indiana is an undeveloped lacrosse market that is not recognized for strong lacrosse players,” says Mark Gricius, assistant coach HSE/Fishers Girls Varsity Lacrosse and co-founder/head coach of the Predators. “Every event that we attend, no matter where it is, we always hear from other teams’ parents, college coaches and referees, ‘Who are you? Where are you from?’ When we tell them we are from the Indianapolis area, their response is, ‘Really?!’”

Lacrosse Clinics

“It’s just a matter of time before people realize that Indiana has a lot of talent with girls lacrosse,” says Mary Handrahan, head coach of HSE/Fishers Girls Lacrosse Team. Mary recalls how her mom pushed her to try a lacrosse clinic while growing up in Chicago.

Mary loved it so much, she played it in high school and college. She says, “You never know until you try it. Once

you do, you’ll realize it’s the best sport because it’s challenging and fun!”

HSE/Fishers Girls lacrosse will be hosting a FREE clinic for any youth who has an interest in trying lacrosse.

Fishers Fire Tanker | Fishers Community Newsletter A new tanker truck will provide additional support to the Fishers Fire Department and ultimately benefit Fishers residents. The new 3,000 gallon tanker truck will replace the current tanker being used at Station 96. The current tanker holds 1,500 gallons of water. The body is 50 years old, and the chassis is 20 years old.

Typically up to five tankers can be called to a scene from other communities like McCordsville, Fortville and Wayne Township. Mutual aid between communities is essential to serving residents in all areas.

The tanker is expected to be at the station located at 15263 E. 104th St. ready for training at the beginning of January and ready for service by midJanuary.

“We are committed to providing the best fire protection possible to our residents,” said Jeff Hern, Fall Creek Township Trustee. “A fire can be devastating to a family and community.

This new tanker will allow our fire department twice the amount of water once they arrive on the scene. This is instrumental in getting the situation under control and saving property, possibly lives.”

Using money from the Cumulative Fire Fund, the Trustee and Fall Creek Township voted to use those funds to replace the current tanker. The new tanker costs approximately $300,000.

The Township also purchased a new ambulance for the Township earlier in 2013.

“This tanker includes valves for quick dumping capability on both the rear and the sides of the truck,” said Fishers Fire Chief Steve Orusa. “It can release up to 3,000 gallons in approximately one minute. This improves our capability to deliver more water faster to extinguish a fire. Approximately 20 percent of our fire response area does not have hydrants. For those areas, having a tanker capable of carrying 3,000 gallons is critical until other tankers arrive to assist.”

Anthony's Awesome Playground Project | Laurie Quinn This past summer, the DiRienzo family of Fishers had the unthinkable happen to them. Jocelyn DiRienzo worked a part-time job while her two sons, Dominic and Anthony, played at a licensed in-home daycare. The details of what happened that unforgettable summer day are not being released and are not the focus of this article, but the DiRienzo family’s life changed forever when their son, Anthony, tragically died while at the in-home licensed daycare.

The void in their hearts and lives can never be filled, but Jocelyn and her family want to honor Anthony in the truest form of his character. Anthony and Dominic loved to play on the playground at New Hope Presbyterian Church and Preschool after being released from school or after a MOPS meeting held at the building. So in his honor, the DiRienzo family would like to upgrade the 10 year old playground area at New Hope to keep these memories alive and to provide years of safe play for the students that attend New Hope.

Anthony was 21 months old when he passed away. He would have attended New Hope this fall following in his older brother’s footsteps who is currently a student there. Donations are being accepted to help get the playground up and running.

Currently they have raised over $22,000 of the minimum $40,000 it will take to put in commercial grade playground equipment.

| Turner Edwards Even though the holidays are over, there is still a need in Hamilton County for food donations. After all the excitement of Christmas dinner and unwrapping gifts is behind us, there are many who are not as fortunate as I am, so it is still the time to give by giving back.

In November, I was privileged to visit the Come to Me Food Pantry located behind Fishers United Methodist Church.

Come to Me is a nonprofit organization that serves lessfortunate families in Hamilton County. While there, I was able to witness firsthand the real need of some in the community.

Come to Me opened in 2007 and donated their millionth pound of food last fall. Since opening, they have grown tremendously from a small work force to a wealth of volunteers. All they require of families is an address showing they live in Hamilton County.

The pantry averages 5,000 pounds of donations a week.

Families can come once a month and will receive food and toiletries for a week. The pantry is open from 3-7 pm the first four Wednesdays a month.

Some of the biggest contributors are Gleaners and Midwest Food Bank. Come to Me also receives donations from local businesses. One major way to donate is Reynolds Farms light display. On weekend nights at Reynolds Farms, volunteers from the pantry stand outside in the cold asking for donations for the pantry.

While I was there, I got to work and know what it feels like to serve others. I had a lot of fun bagging rice. We only worked for 30 minutes but bagged 120 cups of rice and noodles.

When we finished, we were happy to hear that there’s always a need, so they put us right back to work, and we bagged tons of chips. I had loads of fun, and I will never forget my visit.

If you are interested in helping, here are some ways. You can give money to help buy meat and bread. The biggest way to help would be food drives. Just find one and donate as much as you can.

While now is the time of giving, the need is always there.

Donations any time of the year are extremely appreciated, so get out there and make a difference in the community big or small.
